Between-group comparisons for continuous variables were performed using the two-sample t-test (for equal variances) or Welch’s t-test (for unequal variances), based on the result of the F-test for equality of variances. The comparison of age employed the equal-variance t-test, while comparisons of duration of hearing loss and follow-up duration employed Welch’s t-test. Comparison of sex was performed using Fisher’s exact test; the overall between-group difference in etiology distribution was assessed using Fisher’s exact test (P = 0.279), with the result presented here as it pertains to the multi-category comparison.
