Reader Comments:
In a recent review (“Role and mechanism of neural stem cells of the subventricular zone in glioblastoma”), Zhang GL, et al. (2021) describe the development of Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), a frequent, aggressive, invasive, and malignant brain tumor. The review is relevant since, in spite of the continuous research in this area, up to day, these type of tumors remain mostly untreatable, and hence, the prognosis and survival rate of patients are poor.
The review provides recent evidences showing the crosstalk occurring between gliomas and other cells present in the tumor niche. More precisely, the authors describe the origin of GBM in the subventricular zone (ZVZ) and emphasizes the finding of the crosstalk taking place between these cells and many other cells occurring in the microenvironment, such as the neural stem cells (NSC). The authors point out that glioma cells maintain very active interactions with other non-glioma cells occurring in their milieu. They highlight that these interactions and the ability of glioma cells in recruiting non-cancer cells are among the main causes of the aggressiveness of this type of cancer. Interestingly, the authors indicate that rather than NSCs, the undifferentiated NSCs, are the cells which may give rise to glioma formation.
The authors also report that that glioma cells can promote the transformation of astrocytes into reactive astrocytes (RA) and that the accumulation of gene mutations in NSCs could contribute to GBM formation.
All together, the information gathered in the review is relevant and may help to develop new strategies to achieve more suitable treatments, or eventually the cure, of these type of tumors.
Both, the table and figures included in this paper are useful and clearly described. In general, the review gathered novel and interesting information and it is very well written.
