The review article published on “Epigenetic regulation of autophagy: A key modification in cancer cells and cancer stem cells” in issue 13(6) of the World Journal of Stem Cells is providing an updated knowledge in the field of modern oncology research. The authors have provided a brief mechanism of autophagy where discussion is pinpointed on the canonical and non-canonical pathways of autophagy and its regulation by various transcriptional factors. Moreover, the authors have chalked the whole orchestrated events of epigenetic regulations which are assumed to influence the cancer stem cells, cancer cells, and micro-environment of the cancer cells. The detailed perspective of epigenetic regulation of autophagy which is known to be mediated by methylation (Hypomethyaltion and Hypermethylation) of oncogenic and tumor suppressor genes in tumor initiation and advancement is well discussed along with histone protein modification. The significance of non-coding RNA, especially micro-RNA in the regulation of autophagy and tumorigenesis provides updated information. The authors also provide current updates on how these epigenetic modifications can be good therapeutic targets and may transform the current scenario of treatments after minimizing the adverse events and ethical concerns.
