Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the moderating effect of working years on nurses' medical narrative ability and empathy ability. METHODS A multi-center cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1920 clinical nurses from 12 general hospitals of different levels in 7 cities of Hunan Province. Data were collected using a general information questionnaire, Narrative Competence Scale (NCS), and the Jefferson Empathy Health Professional Scale (JSE-HP). The general situation, medical narrative ability and empathy ability were investigated by questionnaires. The correlations among nurses' working years, medical narrative ability and empathy ability were analyzed. The group regression method was used to analyze the moderating effect of different working years on nurses' medical narrative ability and empathy ability, and the differences of regression coefficients were further analyzed to understand the specific effects of different working years. RESULTS A total of 1852 valid questionnaires were collected, and the effective recovery rate was 96.46%. Medical narrative ability was positively correlated with empathy ability (r = 0.198, P < 0.05), working years was positively correlated with medical narrative ability (r = 0.047, P < 0.05), and there was no correlation between medical narrative ability and empathy ability (P > 0.05). Working years had a moderating effect on the relationship between medical narrative ability and empathy ability (β=-0.174, P < 0.001). Group regression analysis showed that with the increase of nurses' working years, the regression coefficient of medical narrative ability and empathy ability decreased gradually (0.077 > 0.036 > 0.019). The difference of regression coefficient was statistically significant (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Nurses with different working years have different effects on empathy. With the increase of working years, the positive effect of medical narrative ability on empathy is gradually weakened. It suggests that nursing managers should carry out hierarchical intervention for nurses with different working years.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses' job satisfaction has long been a global concern because of the critical significance it holds on nurse turnover and the quality and safety of patient care. OBJECTIVES To perform an updated literature review of the newly emerging studies on job satisfaction among hospital nurses. DESIGN Literature review. DATA SOURCES Ten electronic database (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Applied Social Sciences Index, CNKI, SinoMed, CQVIP, WanFang) were searched for studies published between September 2018 and May 2024. REVIEW METHODS Studies were included if they published in English or Chinese and focused on job satisfaction of qualified general nurses working in acute care hospitals. Data extraction, synthesis and content analysis were performed. RESULTS Of the 28,584 studies originally identified, 52 studies were included in the final review. Thirty-eight influencing factors and twenty-nine predictors of nurses' job satisfaction across the domains of demographic characteristics, individual cognition and behaviors, and working environment and management were newly added in this updated review. Sixty-five factors, which were further grouped into eight subcategorizations: demographic characteristics, personality traits, emotion, behaviors, psychological and cognitive factors, organizational climate, leadership and management, were additionally identified as related factors of nurses' job satisfaction. Factors relating to nurses' individual cognition and behaviors mainly played mediating roles in the mediating pathways linking various factors with job satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS This review provides improved understanding of nurses' job satisfaction. Future studies could further explore the mechanisms by which factors relating to working environment and management predict or affect nurses' job satisfaction. The newly identified intrinsic factors from the mediating or moderating pathways offered valuable intervention insights for the improvement of nurses' job satisfaction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current nursing and midwifery rosters are based on guidelines which may no longer adequately meet the needs of health services or staff and often result in decreased job satisfaction, poor health and wellbeing, and high turnover. Little is known about the rostering needs and preferences of contemporary nurses and midwives in Australia. The aim of this study was to identify the rostering concerns, needs and preferences of nurses and midwives, and co-design acceptable, equitable and feasible rostering principles. METHODS A mixed-methods design using a co-design approach with three components: survey, discussion groups, and co-design workshops. Nurses and midwives employed at three public health services in Victoria, Australia were invited to participate. The quantitative (survey) data were analysed using descriptive statistics and the qualitative (discussion groups and co-design workshops) data using thematic analysis. RESULTS Surveys were completed by 715 nurses and midwives including unit (n = 14) and roster (n = 13) managers. Nurses and midwives (n = 688) were mostly satisfied with their roster (mean satisfaction score = 57.4). Many had responsibilities or commitments which impacted their roster availability (n = 406, 61.6%) and over half had taken personal leave due to roster-related fatigue (n = 335, 59.1%) or unmet roster requests (n = 310, 54.7%). Midwives reported significantly less satisfaction (p < 0.001) and more challenges with current roster practices than nurses. Roster and unit managers described spending considerable time preparing and reworking rosters. Thirty-nine nurses and midwives participated in a focus group and outlined concerns about the fairness and equity of current roster practices, and the adverse impact on their health, work, and personal lives. Ninety-one nurses and midwives participated in a co-design workshop and identified a need for roster practices and guidelines which ensure flexibility, fairness and equity, and fatigue management. CONCLUSIONS Although nurses and midwives were mostly satisfied with their rosters, they often experienced frustrations and challenges with current roster guidelines and practices as well as adverse effects on their health and work and personal lives. Nurses and midwives identified a preference for fair and equitable rosters which provide flexibility and enable them to manage their other commitments and responsibilities, reduce roster-related fatigue, and provide high quality patient care.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the resilience levels of nurses and qualit of their professional life. BACKGROUND Nurses' resilience level can affect their professional qualityof life. A higher resilience level enables them to manage stress and overcome challanges more effectively leading to enhanced patient care and satisfaction. Coversly, lower resiliance can lead to burnout, negatievly impacting both the nurses' wellbeing and the quality of service delivered to patients. INTRODUCTION It is crucial to understand the correlation between the professional life quality and resilience of nurses working in difficult conditions. METHODS This correlational study was conducted between September 2021 and February 2022. A total of 276 nurses were included in the study. Data were collected using the Demographic Data Form consisting of sociodemographic characteristics, the Professional Quality-of-Life Scale, and the Resilience Scale for Adults. RESULTS The resilience score was above average, and the professional quality of life was high. Compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue, which are components of professional quality of life, were moderate, and the burnout level was low. A robust positive correlation was observed between resilience and the professional quality of life. The linear regression model showed that choosing the profession unwillingly, dissatisfaction with the unit in which one works, and the level of psychological resilience are independent factors of professional quality of life. CONCLUSION According to the findings, high psychological resilience increases the quality of professional life. Resilience, choosing nursing willingly, and liking the unit in which one works are determinants of professional quality of life. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING POLICY Enhancing the professional quality of life of nurses has important individual, institutional, and social consequences. Enhancing resilience has the potential to elevate the quality of professional life. Hence, it is important to develop national and international policies and models. Additionally, managers bear significant responsibilities in ensuring a positive work environment. Undoubtedly, having nurses work in units they like, feel happy in, and prefer will increase their professional quality of life and make positive contributions to patient care, the institution, and society.

Abstract
AIM This study investigates the mediation of sleep quality between perceived health and occupational burnout in hospital nurses, considering the moderation of workplace violence and organizational culture. BACKGROUND Occupational factors lead to physical and mental distress, burnout, and sleep issues in nurses. Approximately two-thirds of nurses experience burnout, impacting patient care quality and safety. Cultivating a positive organizational culture is essential for nursing workforce stability. METHODS This cross-sectional study employed convenience sampling to recruit 346 nurses from a teaching hospital in southern Taiwan in July-August 2020 (response rate: 87.3%). Self-administered questionnaires containing validated instruments were employed, including an adapted occupational burnout scale, the Chinese version of an organizational culture scale, a Perceived Health Questionnaire, a Workplace Violence Experience Scale, and the CPSQI; all instruments were reliable and valid. The analysis involved descriptive statistics, linear regression, and the Johnson-Neyman technique. RESULTS Nurses with better perceived health exhibited significantly lower occupational burnout (p < 0.001). Perceived health indirectly impacted burnout through sleep quality (p < 0.01) with organizational culture as a partial moderator. Bureaucratic organizational culture exacerbated this relationship. Additionally, decreased workplace violence moderated the connections among perceived health, sleep quality, and occupational burnout among nurses. CONCLUSIONS Given the inverse correlation between nurses' perceived health and occupational burnout and considering factors such as workplace violence, organizational culture, and sleep quality, healthcare institutions can proactively take steps to enhance nurses' overall well-being and mitigate burnout. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY By implementing wellness programs, mental health support, security training, robust reporting, and a zero-tolerance approach to violence, healthcare stakeholders can foster a safe and supportive work environment for nurses, thus improving well-being, patient outcomes, and healthcare quality.

Abstract
Introduction The healthcare industry, particularly in the context of primary care, presents various challenges to nurses and midwives, influencing their psychological empowerment (PE) and quality of work life (QWL). Objective This study's objective is to assess the levels of PE and QWL among Jordanian primary care nurses and midwives and explore the relationship between PE and QWL. Methods Utilizing a descriptive correlational design, the study included 273 Jordanian primary care nurses and midwives through convenience sampling. The Psychological Empowerment Instrument and Brook's Quality of Nursing Work Life Survey were used to measure PE and QWL. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics to describe the study participant's characteristics and inferential analysis such as Pearson correlation, and multiple regression to examine relationships and identify predictors of study variables. Results The study found that the QWL scale had high reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.954), and similarly, the PE scale demonstrated strong reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.948). Moving on to the core findings, significant positive correlations were identified between PE and QWL, with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.568 (p < 0.01), indicating that higher levels of psychological empowerment were associated with better quality of work life. Furthermore, the regression analysis revealed that PE accounted for approximately 32.3% of the variability in QWL scores. Interestingly, participants holding diplomas reported the highest QWL scores (mean = 136.14), while those contemplating leaving the nursing profession displayed significantly lower QWL scores (mean = 114.14). No significant correlations were found between PE and sociodemographic variables such as age, income, and years of experience. Conclusion This study reveals a crucial need to enhance PE and QWL. Key findings show moderate PE and QWL levels, with variations based on educational background and workplace. The positive correlation between PE and QWL identifies the benefits of fostering empowerment through professional development, job autonomy, and decision-making. These insights are vital for improving nursing practice and policy and enhancing nurse satisfaction and patient care.

Abstract
The work environment in healthcare institutions, especially in psychiatric hospitals, plays a crucial role in shaping the experiences and efficacy of nurses' performance. This environment is influenced by various factors such as facility design, resource availability, workplace culture, support systems, and interpersonal dynamics. Understanding the intricate dynamics of the work environment in psychiatric hospitals is essential for ensuring the provision of high-quality mental healthcare services and enhancing the overall quality of life for both patients and healthcare providers, including nurses. However, the work environment of psychiatric nurses in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia is still inadequately understood. Objective: This study aimed to examine the work environment of nurses working in psychiatric hospitals in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia. Method: A cross-sectional research design was employed on a sample of 346 nurses using a non-probability convenience sampling technique. The survey method was adopted with the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (revised, Arabic version). Results: The study found a significant association between psychiatric nurses' work environment and their socio-demographic characteristics. Demographic factors, such as age and years of experience, were identified as influencing factors of nurses' perceptions of their work environment. Younger nurses and those with fewer years of experience reported greater job satisfaction when their work environment was positive. Conclusions: This study underscores the critical importance of maintaining a supportive work environment for psychiatric nurses due to its possible direct influence on their job satisfaction, work performance, quality of life, and overall well-being. Tailoring interventions to address demographic variations in perceptions of the work environment can enhance the well-being of nurses and improve the quality of care provided to psychiatric patients. These findings contribute to the body of knowledge on psychiatric nursing and have clinical implications for healthcare institutions that aim to optimize their work environments and retain a skilled and satisfied nursing workforce.

Mapping of the network connection between sleep quality symptoms, depression, generalized anxiety, and burnout in the general population of Peru and El Salvador. Abstract
BACKGROUND A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials has suggested a bidirectional relationship between sleep problems and mental health issues. Despite these findings, there is limited conclusive evidence on the relationship between sleep quality, depression, anxiety, and burnout. OBJECTIVE The current study aimed to evaluate the relationships between sleep quality symptoms, anxiety, depression, and burnout in samples of adult individuals from two Latin American countries, Peru and El Salvador, through network analysis and to identify key symptoms that reinforce the correlation and intensify the syndromes. METHODS A total of 1012 individuals from El Salvador and Peru participated, with an average age of 26.5 years (SD = 9.1). Symptom networks were constructed for both countries based on data from the Jenkins Sleep Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-2, General Anxiety Disorder-2, and a single burnout item. RESULTS The results indicated that Depressed Mood, Difficulty Falling Asleep, and Nervousness were the most central symptoms in a network in the participating countries. The strongest conditional associations were found between symptoms belonging to the same construct, which were similar in both countries. Thus, there is a relationship between Nervousness and Uncontrollable Worry, Anhedonia and Depressed Mood, and Nighttime Awakenings and Difficulty in Staying Asleep. It was observed that burnout is a bridge symptom between both countries and presents stronger conditional associations with Tiredness on Awakening, Depressed Mood, and Uncontrollable Worry. Other bridge symptoms include a Depressed Mood and Nervousness. The network structure did not differ between the participants from Peru and El Salvador. CONCLUSION The networks formed by sleep quality, anxiety, depression, and burnout symptoms play a prominent role in the comorbidity of mental health problems among the general populations of Peru and El Salvador. The symptom-based analytical approach highlights the different diagnostic weights of these symptoms. Treatments or interventions should focus on identifying central and bridge symptoms.

Abstract
Shift work is a recognized work pattern for nurses worldwide. The disruption of shift workers' biological clocks usually leads to sleep disorders and affects their awareness at work. Eveningness and occupational stress might be effective in causing burnout syndrome. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the chronotype, job burnout and perceived stress among Chinese tertiary hospital nurses, and understand the predictors of circadian rhythm in this group. Between July and September 2020, 23 hospitals were randomly selected from 113 tertiary hospitals in Hunan Province. Twenty-five percent of the nurses working in each hospital were targeted for selection. 28.1% and 17.6% of nurses reported eveningness type and morningness type, respectively. The scores for emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and perceived stress of eveningness nurses were higher than those of morningness counterparts. Eveningness nurses also reported a lower sense of personal accomplishment. Risk factors of eveningness included being under 30 years old, never exercising, having the stressors of late-night shifts and career development, higher levels of emotional exhaustion, sleep latency, sleep duration, and hypnotic use. Shifts may be unavoidable for nurses, nevertheless, understanding the predictors and related factors of chronotype for nurses is necessary for nursing educators and managers to develop a reasonable shift system and appropriate measures to assist nurses in adjusting their work.

Abstract
Background In today's modern world, longer working hours, shift work, and working at night have become major causes of the disruption of our natural circadian rhythms. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the type of shift work (rotating vs. fixed day), duty period (on-duty vs. off-duty), and working period within each shift (nighttime vs. daytime) on the circadian rhythm characteristics of nurses who provide direct patient care. Methods This cross-sectional study used a purposive sampling method. Cosinor analysis was applied to analyze the actigraphy data of nurses providing direct patient care for seven consecutive days. The linear mixed effects model was then used to determine any variances between shift type, duty period, and working period within each shift for the nurses. Results The mesor value did not differ according to nurses' shift type, duty period, and working period within each shift. The amplitude was statistically higher in on-duty nurses and in daytime working hours. The acrophase was significantly delayed in nighttime working hours. As well as nurses in rotating shift had experience. Conclusion Our findings revealed that the peak activity of nurses occurs significantly later at night while working and nurses working during nighttime hours may have a weaker or less distinct circadian rhythm. Thus, this study suggests that limits be placed on the number of rotating nighttime shifts for nurses.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Healthcare workers face an elevated risk of burnout, sleep disorders, and mental health issues, potentially stemming from the misalignment of their circadian rhythm due to nonstandard work schedules. This cross-sectional survey aims to examine the connections between sleep timing, workplace well-being (including burnout and absenteeism), and mental health outcomes (specifically depression and poor sleep) in healthcare workers. Additionally, the survey takes into account individual and professional factors, as well as the interaction with work schedules. METHODS The study encompasses 4,971 healthcare workers from both public and private healthcare facilities in France, including nurses, nursing assistants, and physicians recruited during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Maslach Burnout Inventory assesses burnout, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale measures depression, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index evaluates poor sleep. Sleep timing is categorized into morning, neutral, and evening timing, referred to as midsleep. Multivariate logistic regression analysis is conducted to explore the relationships between sleep timing and burnout, depression, and poor sleep, while adjusting for various factors. RESULTS The findings reveal that 56.5% of participants experience burnout, 29.8% report depression, and 64.5% report poor sleep. Nurses and nursing assistants exhibit a higher prevalence of poor sleep. Morning sleep timing is associated with burnout among those with fixed schedules and with depression among those with shift schedules. Among physicians, both morning and evening sleep timing are associated with depression, while morning sleep timing is linked to poor sleep across all subgroups. INTERPRETATION This study suggests that the misalignment between healthcare workers' internal circadian rhythm and their work schedules may contribute to an increased risk of burnout, depression, and poor sleep. Occupational health services and policymakers should recognize the potential for enhancing workplace well-being and mental health outcomes by enabling healthcare workers to maintain sleep schedules that accommodate their needs.

Abstract
AIM To explore the job demands of healthcare workers (HCWs) working in mobile cabin hospitals in Shanghai and identify the influencing factors. DESIGN The study had a cross-sectional design. METHODS Using the convenience sampling method, we selected 1223 HCWs (medical team members) working in these mobile cabin hospitals during April-May 2022. The findings of the general information questionnaire and the hierarchy scale of job demands of HCWs working in mobile cabin hospitals were used for the investigation. RESULTS The total score of job demands of the included HCWs was 132.26 ± 9.53; the average score of the items was 4.73 ± 0.34. Multivariate linear regression analyses showed that the following HCWs had significantly higher job demands: female HCWs and HCWs who received psychological training or intervention during the COVID-19 pandemic, were satisfied with the doctor/nurse-patient relationship, received support from family members/friends/colleagues, believed that the risk of working in mobile cabin hospitals was high, had adapted to the working environment of mobile cabin hospitals and had college/undergraduate level of education. They would benefit from increased social support and better training in terms of psychological coping mechanisms(both theoretical knowledge and applicable skills) and COVID-19 prevention,control and treatment abilities.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Improved sleep hygiene is postulated to be protective against burnout. Previous studies assessing a potential association between poor sleep quality and burnout showed incongruent results. OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between sleep quality and burnout. DESIGN Setting and Participants: A survey was conducted in a large health care cluster in Singapore and included health care staff from different professions (N = 4777). The Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey was used to measure burnout across 3 sub-scales: Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization and Personal Accomplishment, while the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to gauge the participants' sleep quality. Multi-variable general linear model ANOVA was used for correlation analysis. RESULTS There is a strong correlation between sleep quality and all 3 burnout sub-scales. PSQI is associated with Emotional Exhaustion (F value = 90.65, P-value <.0001), Depersonalization (F value = 49.46, P-value <.0001) and Personal Accomplishment (F value = 12.29, P-value <.0001). PSQI shows a significant linear upward trend with Emotional Exhaustion (linear contrast = 957.06, P-value <.0001) and with Depersonalization (linear contrast = 521.92, P-value <.0001). With Personal Accomplishment, PSQI shows a significant linear downward trend (linear contrast = 123.61, P-value <.0001). CONCLUSION Poor sleep quality is progressively and linearly associated with burnout and its 3 sub-scales. Future studies that evaluate interventions which improve sleep quality among health care workers may be useful in reducing burnout and improving patient care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disturbances can lead to work-family conflicts and affect the mental health of nurses. This study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of sleep disturbance on the association between work-family conflict (WFC) and burnout in nurses. METHODS Responses to a questionnaire from 156 nurses working in a hospital in South Korea were analyzed. Multiple linear regression analysis and PROCESS Macro Model 4 were used to analyze the mediating effect of sleep disturbance on the relationship between WFC and burnout. A bootstrapping approach was used to test the statistical significance of the indirect parameter effects. RESULTS The WFC of nurses had a positive correlation with sleep disturbance and burnout. Moreover, sleep disturbance completely mediated the association between WFC and burnout. CONCLUSIONS Nursing administrators should pay careful attention to WFCs that interfere with nurses' sleep and reduce their sleep quality, and design suitable working schedules that minimize the effects of WFC. In addition, hospital administrators should improve shift scheduling to ensure good sleep quality and reduce the health effects of WFC among nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low back pain is an important health problem causing serious physical, psychological, and economic losses in developed and developing countries. AIM The aim of this study is to investigate comprehensively the factors related to the intensity of pain in office workers with non-specific low back pain (NSLBP). METHODS The study included 71 university office workers with NSLBP, aged 21-55 years. In addition to evaluating the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of office workers with NSLBP, visual analog scale (VAS), Short-Form 36 (SF-36), Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Tampa Kinesiophobia Scale (TKS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Timed Up and Go (TUG) outcome measurements were applied. RESULTS There was a statistically significant association between the intensity of pain and TUG test (p = .000), job satisfaction (p = .015), percentages of disability (p = .000), quality of life (role difficulty due to physical limitation, p = .010; pain, p = .000; social the function, p = .044), and depression (p = .004). CONCLUSIONS While the functional performance, job satisfaction level, and quality of life in office workers with NSLBP with severe-intensity pain were lower, level of disability, depression were higher in office workers with NSLBP with mild-to-moderate-intensity pain.

Abstract
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, burnout symptoms have been prevalent among healthcare workers. Living with spouses can be complex and was associated with an increased burnout risk during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigated the relationship between living with spouses and burnout among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. We distributed questionnaires to participants working in a hospital affiliated with a medical university in Taiwan. The questionnaires were the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory, which comprises personal burnout (PB), work-related burnout (WB), and client burnout subscales; the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire; and information on basic demographic variables, family factors, living habits, work-related factors, and physical health factors. Multiple linear regression and mediation analysis were used. We obtained 1615 (63.81%) valid questionnaires. After analysis revealed that marriage was an independent risk factor for PB; however, the effect of marriage on WB was nonsignificant after controlling for risk factors. Parenthood, less alcohol use, reported sleep duration less than six hours, less overtime, less shift work, and participation in leisure activities with family and friends were found to be mediators between marriage and a lower WB level. In addition, chronic diseases, frequent neck pain, and shoulder pain were suppression factors. In summary, marriage was associated with an increased risk of PB. Married individuals sustain a high WB level because of changes in family roles, living conditions, and work conditions. Overall, helping healthcare workers to maintain well-being in marriage or family living may be effective in decreasing burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION An occupational stress was reported as an inhibitor of optimal performance among nurses. Emotional intelligence (EI) has emerged as a successful behavioral buffer against occupational stress and as a facilitator for better performance. This study aimed to investigate the potential relationship between nurses' EI and their work performance; and to examine the mediating role of occupational stress. DESIGN A predictive correlational design was adopted. METHOD Self-reported questionnaires were administered to 391 full-time bedside nurses recruited from one of the big hospitals in Saudi Arabia, between April and June 2021. Data were coded and analyzed using IBM SPSS version 25.0. Simple and multiple linear regression analyses were used to test the hypotheses. The significance level for all tests was set at p ≤ 0.05. Bonferroni correction method was used to control the family-wise error rate. RESULTS The findings revealed an affirmative association between nurses' EI and work performance (β = 0.69, p < 0.001; r2 = 0.483). Additionally, an inverse association was established between nurses' EI and their perception of occupational stress (β = -0.54, p < 0.001; r2 = 0.286), and between nurses' perception of occupational stress and work performance (β = -0.52; p < 0.001; r2 = 0.226). Additionally, our results showed that occupational stress played a mediating role in the relationship between nurses' EI and work performance. CONCLUSION This study presented a novel framework that includes two factors affecting work performance among nurses in Saudi Arabia. Our results suggest that EI is vital for effective work performance among nurses. Additionally, EI was found to be a useful coping strategy against occupational stress. CLINICAL RELEVANCE EI has been described as a valuable asset for better performance and effective group cohesiveness among nurses. Optimal nurses᾽ performance leads to meeting patients᾽ needs and organizational goals.

Abstract
Burnout occurs when people are exposed to emotionally demanding work situations over an extended period, resulting in physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion. This study adopted the personal burnout (PB) and work-related burnout (WB) scales of the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory to measure burnout levels. Musculoskeletal (MS) pain is one factor influencing burnout. Previous studies have demonstrated that male and female hormones may contribute to sex-related differences in MS pain. This was an observational and cross-sectional study conducted at a medical-university-affiliated hospital in Taichung, Taiwan, in 2021. Data were collected for demographic characteristics, family structure, living habits, occupation, physical health, Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire score, and Copenhagen Burnout Inventory score. Of the 2531 questionnaires that were distributed, 1615 (63.81%) valid questionnaires remained after those with missing data were excluded. The results demonstrated neck and shoulder pain (NBSP) is commonly associated with burnout among healthcare workers, with a higher prevalence among women than among men. With confounders being controlled for, women were found to experience substantially higher levels of personal and work-related burnout than men did. NBSP is a mediating factor; therefore, it is a key reason why women are more likely than men to experience burnout.

Abstract
AIM This study examined the mediating effect of circadian rhythm amplitude (LV) and stability (FR) between work stress and sleep quality among Chinese shift-working nurses (SWNs). DESIGN A cross-sectional study. METHODS Three-hundred and seventy-nine nurses working in shifts were investigated by convenient sampling from six hospitals in Shanghai, China. The mediating effect was analysed using the structural equation model with bootstrapping procedures. RESULTS Work stress could directly affect shift nurses' sleep quality and indirectly affect sleep quality through circadian rhythm amplitude and stability. The total indirect effects of work stress on sleep quality accounted for 36.7% of the total effect. The study revealed that poor sleep quality is very common among SWNs, which deserves attention. The mediating effect of the circadian rhythm provides new insights to improve sleep quality, not only by lightening the work stress but also by improving circadian rhythm in SWNs.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Burnout affects approximately half of all nurses, physicians, and other clinicians. Alcohol use may impair performance in work-related tasks, leading to decreased productivity and morale. The present study’s aim was to determine whether a causal relationship existed between alcohol use, work-related burnout (WB), and musculoskeletal pain. Materials and Methods: A total of 1633 members from a hospital affiliated with a medical university in Taichung, Taiwan, completed questionnaires in 2021, where 1615 questionnaires were declared valid. Questionnaires were used to obtain information on basic demographic variables, and the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and Copenhagen Burnout Inventory were used. Statistical analyses were performed using SAS Enterprise Guide 6.1 software, and significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Work experience, being married, parenthood, leisure activities with family and friends, and regular weekly exercise were negatively associated with WB. In addition, overtime work, irregular and regular shift work, the physician and nurse medical profession, chronic disease (heart disease, diabetes, etc.), neck and both shoulders pain (NBSP), both ankles pain (BAP), and alcohol use frequency (AUF) were positively associated with WB. NBSP could explain the residual effect of AUF on WB. AUF was determined to mediate the relationship between NBSP and WB. In addition, NBSP was found to mediate the relationship between AUF and WB. Conclusions: The individuals who used alcohol to cope with NBSP or those with NBSP who often consumed alcohol had worsened WB due to a vicious circle of musculoskeletal pain and alcohol use. Therefore, medical staff should not consider alcohol use as an option to reduce burnout.

Abstract
Burnout can affect nurses’ sleep quality. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between burnout syndrome and sleep problems in nurses. A systematic review with meta-analysis was performed. PubMed, CINAHL and Scopus databases were used. Some of the inclusion criteria were quantitative studies, in which the levels of burnout and sleep disorders were investigated in a sample of nurses using validated scales. A total of 12 studies were included. Sociodemographic variables did not influence the relation between burnout and sleep problems, except for being female. The environment and workplace violence, together with psychological traits and shifts, affect the probability of developing burnout and insomnia. The meta-analysis sample was n = 1127 nurses. The effect size of the correlation between burnout and sleep disorders was r = 0.39 (95% CI 0.29−0.48) with p < 0.001, indicating that the higher the level of burnout in nurses, the greater the presence of sleep disorders. The positive correlation between burnout and sleep disorders is a problem that must be addressed to improve the health of nurses. Developing turnicity strategies, using warmer lights in hospital units during night shifts and eliminating the fixed night shift could improve nurses’ working conditions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To classify the characteristics of circadian type among clinical nurses and examine their relationships with presenteeism and work-related flow. METHODS Using a cross-sectional design, 568 nurses were recruited through convenience sampling in January 2021 from three hospitals in Shandong Province, China. The data were collected using self-report measures, including the 11-item Circadian Type Inventory, Stanford Presenteeism Scale-6, and Work-Related Flow Inventory. Latent class analysis was performed to identify any clustering of circadian types. One-way analysis was performed to compare the differences between presenteeism and work-related flow in different circadian types. RESULTS Four latent classes were identified, including high response class (14.4%), high flexible class (20.1%), high languid class (51.1%), and low response class (14.4%). Regarding presenteeism, the high languid class had higher scores than others. Regarding work-related flow, the scores of high flexible class were higher than those of high languid class, while the differences in all three dimensions were statistically significant. CONCLUSION Although the shift work mode is not expected to change, nursing managers could use circadian type as a predictive index to select and employ individuals for shift work to enhance work performance and provide sufficient support to staff who are intolerant to shift work.

Abstract
Ultra- and circadian activity rhythms of animals can provide important insights into animal welfare. The consistency of behavioral patterns is characteristic of healthy organisms, while changes in the regularity of behavioral rhythms may indicate health and stress-related challenges. This pilot study aimed to examine whether dairy cows in free-stall barns with an automatic milking system (AMS) and free cow traffic can develop ultra- and circadian activity rhythms. On 4 dairy farms, pedometers recorded the activity of 10 cows each over 28 days. Based on time series calculation, the Degree of Functional Coupling (DFC) was used to determine the cows' activity rhythms. The DFC identified significant rhythmic patterns in sliding 7-day periods and indicated the percentage of activity (0–100%) that was synchronized with the 24-h day-night rhythm. As light is the main factor influencing the sleep-wake cycle of organisms, light intensity was recorded in the AMS, at the feed alley and in the barn of each farm. In addition, feeding and milking management were considered as part of the environmental context. Saliva samples of each cow were taken every 3 h for 1 day to determine the melatonin concentration. The DFC approach was successfully used to detect activity rhythms of dairy cows in commercial housing systems. However, large inter- and intra-individual variations were observed. Due to a high frequency of 0 and 100%, a median split was used to dichotomize into “low” (<72.34%) and “high” (≥72.34%) DFC. Forty percent of the sliding 7-day periods corresponded to a low DFC and 50% to a high DFC. No DFC could be calculated for 10% of the periods, as the cows' activity was not synchronized to 24 h. A generalized linear mixed-effects model revealed that the DFC levels were positively associated with a longer milking interval and a higher amount of daytime activity and negatively associated with higher number of lactations. The DFC is a novel approach to animal behavior monitoring. Due to its automation capability, it represents a promising tool in its further development for the purpose of longitudinal monitoring of animal welfare.

Abstract
Nurse managers are affected by burnout due to the high degree of interaction between managers with their registered nurses. Explanatory models based on psychological, and personality related variables purvey an estimation to level changes in the three dimensions of the burnout syndrome. A categorical-response logistic ordinal regression model, supported on a quantitative, crosscutting, multicentre, descriptive study with 86 nursing managers in the Andalusian Health Service in Granada, Spain is performed for each dimension. The three models included different variables related to personality, as well as depression as the only explanatory variable included in all the models. The risk factor neuroticism was significant at population level and related to emotional exhaustion, whilst responsibility was significant in the model estimated to personal accomplishment dimension. Finally, depression was significant for the three dimensions of Burnout. This analysis provides useful information to help the diagnosis and evolution of this syndrome in this collective.

Abstract
Background Chronic stress is a highly prevalent condition that may stem from different
sources and can substantially impact physiology and behavior, potentially
leading to impaired mental and physical health. Multiple physiological and
behavioral lifestyle features can now be recorded unobtrusively in
daily-life using wearable sensors. The aim of the current study was to
identify a distinct set of physiological and behavioral lifestyle features
that are associated with elevated levels of chronic stress across different
stress sources. Methods For that, 140 healthy female participants completed the Trier inventory for
chronic stress (TICS) before wearing the Fitbit Charge3 sensor for seven
consecutive days while maintaining their daily routine. Physiological and
lifestyle features that were extracted from sensor data, alongside
demographic features, were used to predict high versus low chronic stress
with support vector machine classifiers, applying out-of-sample model
testing. Results The model achieved 79% classification accuracy for chronic stress from a
social tension source. A mixture of physiological (resting heart-rate,
heart-rate circadian characteristics), lifestyle (steps count, sleep onset
and sleep regularity) and non-sensor demographic features (smoking status)
contributed to this classification. Conclusion As wearable technologies continue to rapidly evolve, integration of
daily-life indicators could improve our understanding of chronic stress and
its impact of physiology and behavior.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the levels of burnout, compassion satisfaction (CS), and patient safety management activities (PSMA) among nurses on shift work in general hospitals and to examine the mediating effect of CS on the relationship between burnout and PSMA. This was a descriptive-correlational study, conducted with a convenience sample of 301 nurses from four general hospitals. Data were collected from 1 August to 4 September 2021, using self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed using the t-test, analysis of variance, Tukey test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analyses. Mediation analysis was performed according to the Baron and Kenny, and Sobel Tests. Significant relationships were found between shift nurses' burnout and CS (r = -0.66, p < 0.001), burnout and PSMA (r = -0.32, p < 0.001), and PSMA and CS (r = 0.32, p < 0.001). Compassion satisfaction showed partial mediating effects on the relationship between burnout and PSMA (Z = -3.21, p = 0.001). The higher the burnout of shift-working nurses, the lower the patient safety management activity. Therefore, an effective support system at the organizational level as well as individual efforts are necessary to enhance CS and reduce burnout of shift-working nurses.

Abstract
The discrepancy between natural sleep-wake rhythm and actual sleep times in shift workers can cause sleep loss and negative daytime consequences. Irregular shift schedules do not follow a fixed structure and change frequently, which makes them particularly harmful and makes affected individuals more susceptible to insomnia. The present study compares insomnia symptoms of non-shift workers, regular shift workers, and irregular shift workers and takes into account the moderating role of the Big Five personality traits and levels of perfectionism. Employees of an Austrian railway company completed an online survey assessing shift schedules, sleep quality and duration, daytime sleepiness, and personality traits. A total of 305 participants, of whom 111 were non-shift workers, 60 regular shift workers, and 134 irregular shift workers, made up the final sample. Irregular shift workers achieved significantly worse scores than one or both of the other groups in time in bed, total sleep time, sleep efficiency, sleep duration, sleep quality, sleep latency, and the number of awakenings. However, the values of the irregular shifts workers are still in the average range and do not indicate clinical insomnia. Participants working regular shifts reported the best sleep quality and longest sleep duration and showed the least nocturnal awakenings, possibly due to higher conscientiousness- and lower neuroticism scores in this group. Agreeableness increased the effect of work schedule on total sleep time while decreasing its effect on the amount of sleep medication taken. Perfectionism increased the effect of work schedule on time in bed and total sleep time. Generalization of results is limited due to the high percentage of males in the sample and using self-report measures only.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Burnout, musculoskeletal pain, and sharps injuries (SIs) affect medical workers.
AIM To establish a model between SIs, burnout, and the risk factors to assess the extent to which burnout affects SIs.
METHODS This questionnaire was used for an observational and cross-sectional study, which was based on members at a hospital affiliated with a medical university in Taichung, Taiwan, in 2020. The valid responses constituted 68.5% (1734 of 2531). The items were drawn from the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and Copenhagen burnout inventory and concerned work experience, occupational category, presence of chronic diseases, sleep duration, overtime work, and work schedule. Factor analysis, chi-square test, Fisher exact test, Multiple linear, logistic regression and Sobel test were conducted. The present analyses were performed using SAS Enterprise Guide 6.1 software (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, United States), and significance was set at P < 0.05.
RESULTS Personal and work-related burnout ranks, sex, work experience ranks, occupational groups, drinking in the past month, sleep duration per day, presence of chronic diseases, overtime work ranks, and work schedule were associated with SIs. Frequent upper limb and lower limb pain (pain occurring every day or once a week) determined to be related to SIs. High personal burnout (> Q3) and high work-related burnout (> Q3) mediated the relationship between SIs and frequent lower limb pain. Similarly, frequent lower limb pain mediated the relationship of SIs with high personal and high work-related burnout. High personal and high work-related burnout mediated the relationships of SIs with overtime work and irregular shift work. The mediating model provides strong evidence of an association between mental health and SIs.
CONCLUSION Burnout was determined to contribute to SIs occurrence; specifically, it mediated the relationships of SIs with frequent musculoskeletal pain, overtime work, and irregular shift work.

Abstract
AIM To identify, evaluate and summarize the components, factors and outcomes of nurses' occupational stress published between 2009-2019. DESIGN Integrative literature review. METHODS A literature search was conducted on PubMed, CINAHL and PsycINFO databases for articles published in English, between 2009-2019. RESULTS The review included 132 studies. Most studies were conducted in the Confucian Asia and Anglo countries, but a growing number of studies were done in other countries. Almost all studies used a quantitative design, and changes in the use of scales indicated an increasing attention to career-related components. Factors were categorized into sociodemographic, work environment and personal resources. Sociodemographic factors were inconsistent across countries. Outcomes were categorized into health status, capability, affective and behavioural responses to work, and organizational performance with generally consistent results. Model validation studies showed the non-linear or non-direct associations between stress and outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Healthcare systems have widely adopted consecutive 12 h day and night shifts for nurses, but the effects of these shifts on cognition, sleepiness, and nursing performance remains understudied. OBJECTIVE To determine the extent of changes in cognition and sleepiness in nurses working three consecutive 12 h shifts, quantify the respective impacts of these changes on different aspects of nursing performance, and investigate individual differences in all measures. DESIGN A quasi-experimental, between-within design collected data from nurses between November 2018 and March 2020. The between-groups component was comprised of day shift nurses vs. night shift nurses, while the within-groups component was comprised of two separate test sessions for each nurse: one immediately following a third consecutive shift (fatigued) and one after three consecutive days off work (rested). SETTING Participants were tested in a northwestern US university's nursing simulation laboratory. PARTICIPANTS A volunteer sample of 94 registered nurses involved in direct patient care working 12 h shifts were recruited from two local hospitals. METHODS Simulated nursing performance was measured in seven separate domains and an aggregate score from the Creighton Competence and Evaluation Inventory, covering both lower- and higher-level constructs like procedural skills, assessment, decision-making, etc. Cognition and sleepiness were assessed through measures of sustained attention, predicted cognitive effectiveness, and subjective sleepiness. RESULTS In our 94 nurses, individual differences in all our measures varied from trivial to extensive. For six domains of performance and the aggregate score there were no significant differences in means across groups or conditions. For the seventh, Communication skills were lower for night nurses than day nurses, but this effect was small. After three consecutive shifts, sustained attention and predicted cognitive effectiveness decreased, and subjective sleepiness increased. Predicted cognitive effectiveness was particularly low for fatigued night nurses relative to other conditions and was positively correlated with Communication while controlling for other predictors. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Nurses maintained their levels of performance for all domains after three consecutive shifts. Individual differences in predicted cognitive effectiveness could account for variation in performance by shift type for Communication skills but for no other domain of performance. Communication skills and predicted cognitive effectiveness may interest researchers in the development of fatigue-mitigation strategies for night nurses, but our findings also suggest that more sensitive measures of performance may be necessary to capture other meaningful effects of long, consecutive shifts-if any-on patient care. Abstract
Shift work can lead to circadian desynchronization due to temporary misalignment between working hours and physiological and behavioral functioning, resulting in compromised health, insomnia, worsening of sleep quality, reduced ability to work during waking hours, and increased cardiovascular risk. We evaluated the effects of shift work on the rest-activity circadian rhythm (RAR) and health status of Italian orthopaedic nurses. The study population was 59 nurses: 44 worked the night shift and 15 worked the day shift. All carried out continuous 5-day actigraphic monitoring to assess RAR, including both the working and the rest period. The rhythmometric analysis showed that, during the working period, the night shift nurses had a significantly lower amplitude than the day shift nurses (p < 0.001), and the acrophase was significantly different between the two groups (p < 0.01). When we stratified the two groups by median body mass index (<25 kg/m2 normal weight and ≥25 kg/m2 overweight), during the working period, we noted a significantly lower amplitude for both the normal weight and the overweight nurses who worked the night shift (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, normal weight and overweight respectively). The current findings suggest the need for further study of the relationship between activity levels and shift work.

Abstract
The traits languidity (tendency to become tired/sleepy upon losing sleep) and flexibility (ability to sleep and work at odd times) have been implicated in shift work tolerance. However, there is a dearth of knowledge about their temporal stability. The aim of the present study was to explore these traits during a long follow-up (FU) period and identify factors related to potential changes in trait scores over time. In all, 1,652 nurses completed the Circadian Type Inventory-revised (CTI-r), which measures languidity and flexibility, at both 2008/2009 (baseline, BL) and again in 2016 (FU). The latent scores of these two constructs at BL, in addition to age, sex, childcare responsibility, marital status, night work status, and insomnia status, were regressed on the corresponding latent scores at follow-up using a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach. Stability was found for both languidity (rho = 0.59) and flexibility (rho = 0.58). Both composite scores declined significantly from baseline (20.62 and 12.48) to follow-up (19.96 and 11.77). Languidity at baseline was positively associated with languidity at follow-up (β = 0.89, p < 0.009). Undertaking childcare responsibility between baseline and follow-up was inversely related to languidity at follow-up (β = −0.09, p < 0.05). Starting night work was positively related to languidity at follow-up (β = 0.06, p < 0.05). Developing insomnia between baseline and follow-up (β = 0.15, p < 0.05) was positively, whereas remitting from insomnia during the same period was negatively (β = −0.11, p < 0.01) associated with languidity at follow-up. Flexibility at baseline was positively associated with flexibility at follow-up (β = 0.64, p < 0.05). Having childcare responsibility at baseline, but not at follow-up was inversely related to flexibility at follow-up (β = −0.05 p < 0.05). Becoming cohabitant with a partner between baseline and follow-up (β = −0.07, p < 0.05) was negatively associated with flexibility at follow-up. Starting night work between baseline and follow-up (β = 0.17, p < 0.01) and reporting night work at both baseline and follow-up (β = 0.18, p < 0.01) were both positively associated with flexibility at follow-up, whereas stopping working nights was negatively (β = −0.09, p < 0.05), associated with flexibility at follow-up. The personality traits languidity and flexibility show fairly high stability, albeit the mean scores were significantly reduced during the 7–8 years follow-up period. The results suggest that these personality traits are partly modifiable.

Abstract
Hypertension is a major risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease. Various factors such as occupational and environmental risk factors affect blood pressure. Shift work is considered to be an occupational stressor. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between rotating shift work and blood pressure among nurses working in hospitals associated with faculty of medical science. This cross-sectional and descriptive-analytic study was conducted on nurses who worked in three hospitals associated with faculty of medical science, located in Abadan, southwest of Iran from September until December 2019. The sample size was 120 participants and divided into 60 rotating shift workers and 60 day workers (non-shift workers). The nurses were selected through the stratified random sampling technique. Demographic data, smoking status, and medical and occupational history were collected through a check list and interviews. Blood pressure was measured using a digital sphygmomanometer. Data were analyzed by the Mann-Whitney U, chi-square, Pearson's correlation coefficient and logistic regression by using SPSS software version 22. There was statistically significant difference in blood pressure between day workers and rotating shift workers (p ≤ 0.001). By logistic regression analyses, and even after adjusting for confounding variables, rotating shift work was associated with a higher prevalence of hypertension (OR: 1.76 [95%CI: 1.11-2.80]). The findings of this study showed that rotating shift workers have a higher incidence of hypertension than day workers. Therefore, a particular follow-up of rotating shift workers should be recommended to screen workers for hypertension.

Abstract
Healthcare workers who are on the front line of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and are also undergoing shift schedules face long work hours with few pauses, experience desynchronization of their circadian rhythm, and an imbalance between work hours effort and reward in saving lives, resulting in an impact on work capacity, aggravated by the lack of personal protective equipment (PPE), few resources and precarious infrastructure, and fear of contracting the virus and contaminating family members. Some consequences are sleep deprivation, chronic insomnia, stress-related sleep disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. These sleep alterations critically affect mental health, precipitating or perpetuating anxiety, stress, and depression, resulting in the inability to regulate positive and negative emotions. Pre-existing sleep disorders are an important risk factor for the development and maintenance of PSTD when individuals are exposed to an important stressor such as a COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, how an individual regulates the emotion associated with worries during daytime functioning impacts nighttime sleep, precipitating and perpetuating difficulties in sleeping. All of these changes in sleep and emotional regulation also alter the immune system. Sleep deprivation is commonly associated with chronic inflammatory diseases, due to the desynchronizations in circadian rhythms, causing possible psychophysiological disorders and impaired neuroimmune-endocrine homeostasis. From this perspective, we clarify in this article how sleep disorders affect the immune system and emotional regulation, explaining their phenomenological and neurobiological mechanisms, and discussing elements of cognitive and behavioral coping for health professionals to adopt and manage a healthier sleep pattern in the COVID-19 outbreak.

Abstract
Aim This study aimed to investigate the effect of circadian rhythm stability and amplitude on musculoskeletal disorder prevalence and work–family conflict among nurses. Design This cross‐sectional study was conducted on 386 nurses working in three hospitals, in Shahroud, Iran. Method The data were collected using the Circadian Rhythm Inventory, Nordic Musculoskeletal Disorders, and Carlson Work‐Family Conflict questionnaires. Results The highest prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders was reported in the lower back (68.4%), upper back (65.5%) and shoulders (53.6%), respectively. No significant relation was found between circadian rhythm stability and amplitude, and musculoskeletal disorders prevalence. The nurses who could not overcome drowsiness reported more Work Interference with Family (WIF), Family Interference with Work (FIW) (time‐based) and FIW (strain‐based) compared to the nurses who overcame drowsiness. In addition, the appropriate nurses for shift work experienced less WIF, FIW (behavioural‐based) and WIF (strain‐based) compared to the nurses who could not work overtime or at night.

Abstract
RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a prevalência e a existência de fatores preditores da síndrome de Burnout em técnicos de enfermagem que atuam em unidade de terapia intensiva (UTI) durante a pandemia da COVID-19. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo descritivo, de caráter transversal e abordagem quantitativa com 94 técnicos de enfermagem de terapia intensiva. Os instrumentos utilizados foram: um formulário de coleta de dados sociodemográficos, ocupacionais e comportamentais e o Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) em sua versão Human Services Survey (HSS). A associação entre as variáveis estudadas e a prevalência da síndrome de Burnout foi verificada por análise bivariada seguida de regressão de Poisson hierarquizada, com variância robusta. Resultados: Observou-se uma prevalência da síndrome em 25,5% da amostra analisada. As variáveis que, após análise múltipla, se mostraram como preditores associados a maior prevalência de síndrome de Burnout foram: idade > 36 anos, realizar hora extra, considerar a carga horária de trabalho rígida e ser etilista. Conclusão: Conclui-se que a prevalência da síndrome de Burnout em técnicos de enfermagem que atuam em UTIs e que estão na linha de frente na pandemia da COVID-19 foi alta e fatores sociodemográficos, ocupacionais e comportamentais se mostraram como preditores da síndrome.

Abstract
Our previous study indicated that clinical teaching nurses in China suffered high levels of perceived stress and burnout, mainly because they were taking double responsibilities of nursing and teaching at the same time. The study aimed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of how and when perceived stress increased the risk of burnout and decreased life satisfaction among clinical teaching nurses. Questionnaires about perceived stress, burnout, emotion regulation, and life satisfaction were self-administered to 1,372 teaching nurses from eight tertiary military hospitals in China. Correlation and hierarchical multiple regressions were employed for data analysis. The results revealed that perceived stress had direct and indirect impacts on life satisfaction, with the principal element of burnout-emotional exhaustion-acting as a mediator. Moreover, the association between perceived stress and emotional exhaustion was moderated by emotion suppression-a key emotion regulation strategy. The negative impact of perceived stress on burnout was stronger among teaching nurses with high emotion suppression than among those with low emotion suppression. The present study contributed to a deeper understanding of the relationship between perceived stress and life satisfaction and also suggested further research into emotion regulation interventions to alleviate or eliminate the impact of perceived stress on burnout and eventually improve the life satisfaction for Chinese clinical nursing teachers.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To analyse the prevalence, levels and phases of burnout syndrome in midwives and obstetrics and gynaecology nurses, and to evaluate the relationship between burnout and sociodemographic, occupational and psychological factors. BACKGROUND Burnout syndrome is a major problem in occupational health, characterised by feelings of exhaustion, depersonalisation and a low sense of personal achievement that appears after long-term occupational stress. Recent research has found that burnout harms the physical and mental well-being of workers, and jeopardises the quality of care provided. The association between burnout and a risk profile in maternity wards has not previously been investigated but it deserves special attention since it is a highly stressful area to work in. DESIGN A cross-sectional survey design was selected. METHODS A total of 150 nurses and midwives at 18 hospitals participated in this study. The data were collected using the Maslach Burnout Inventory, NEO Personality Inventory and the Educational-Clinical Questionnaire: Anxiety and Depression. This study adhered to the STROBE guideline. RESULTS 17% of participants presented high levels of emotional exhaustion, 16.6% high depersonalisation and 55.1% a sense of low personal accomplishment. The sociodemographic and occupational variables related to burnout were gender, marital status and work shift. The three dimensions of the syndrome, emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and personal accomplishment were predicted by depression, neuroticism, agreeableness and openness. CONCLUSIONS One third of the sample presented high levels of burnout, which was most strongly experienced as feelings of low personal accomplishment. Furthermore, personality factors play an important role in the development of burnout syndrome. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Managers and policy makers should promote strategies to reduce burnout. To prevent the syndrome, personality factors should be taken into account, for the early identification of a profile of professionals most at risk of developing burnout.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To investigate how nurses who worked in Guangdong province in China perceived empathy, nursing organization climate and burnout. DESIGN A cross-sectional quantitative research design was used. We carried out the research in accordance with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology checklist. METHODS The study was carried out from August-October of 2018 using a structured electronic questionnaire. A total of 965 participants were selected with convenience sampling in Guangdong province. RESULTS A total of 786 valid questionnaires were collected in this study. The average burnout score of participants was 38.19 (SD 13.32) and 67.4% of them rated their burnout as more than 30 points, while 5.7% were higher than 60 points. The multi-variable linear regression model explained 9.4% of the variance in burnout related to sociodemographic variables (p < 0.001). Empathy was significantly and positively associated with nursing organizational climate and emotional exhaustion while negatively associated with reduced personal accomplishment. In addition, nursing organizational climate mediated the relationship between empathy and reduced personal accomplishment. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that both empathy and nursing organizational climate are protective factors that prevent burnout in this population. Managers can alleviate nurses' burnout through developing empathy and improving the organizational climate. IMPACT This study demonstrates that empathy is not the cause of burnout; rather, it can prevent nurses from experiencing burnout. Nursing organizational climate is another protective factor that has a mediating effect on empathy and burnout. Improving empathy and nursing organizational climate could help reduce nurse burnout.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Workforce studies often identify burnout as a nursing 'outcome'. Yet, burnout itself-what constitutes it, what factors contribute to its development, and what the wider consequences are for individuals, organisations, or their patients-is rarely made explicit. We aimed to provide a comprehensive summary of research that examines theorised relationships between burnout and other variables, in order to determine what is known (and not known) about the causes and consequences of burnout in nursing, and how this relates to theories of burnout. METHODS We searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, and PsycINFO. We included quantitative primary empirical studies (published in English) which examined associations between burnout and work-related factors in the nursing workforce. RESULTS Ninety-one papers were identified. The majority (n = 87) were cross-sectional studies; 39 studies used all three subscales of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) Scale to measure burnout. As hypothesised by Maslach, we identified high workload, value incongruence, low control over the job, low decision latitude, poor social climate/social support, and low rewards as predictors of burnout. Maslach suggested that turnover, sickness absence, and general health were effects of burnout; however, we identified relationships only with general health and sickness absence. Other factors that were classified as predictors of burnout in the nursing literature were low/inadequate nurse staffing levels, ≥ 12-h shifts, low schedule flexibility, time pressure, high job and psychological demands, low task variety, role conflict, low autonomy, negative nurse-physician relationship, poor supervisor/leader support, poor leadership, negative team relationship, and job insecurity. Among the outcomes of burnout, we found reduced job performance, poor quality of care, poor patient safety, adverse events, patient negative experience, medication errors, infections, patient falls, and intention to leave. CONCLUSIONS The patterns identified by these studies consistently show that adverse job characteristics-high workload, low staffing levels, long shifts, and low control-are associated with burnout in nursing. The potential consequences for staff and patients are severe. The literature on burnout in nursing partly supports Maslach's theory, but some areas are insufficiently tested, in particular, the association between burnout and turnover, and relationships were found for some MBI dimensions only.

Abstract
The balance of personal life with professional life is a topical issue that is increasingly worrisome due to globalization, the rapid introduction of new technologies into all areas of human life, the overlap between time between work and family, new organizational systems, and changes in the nature of work. This problem is accentuated by professions subjected to intense labor demands, as is the case of nurses. Adopting the Job Demand–Control–Support model, the main purpose of this research is to analyze how these factors lead to a greater or lesser degree of work–life balance. The research proposes a logistic regression model, which was constructed with a sample of 991 nursing professionals from the V European Working Conditions Survey. The results obtained confirm, on the one hand, that there is a significant effect of physical demands (but not psychological demands) on work–life balance. On the other hand, the moderating effects of job control are partially confirmed for psychological demands, and those of supervisor support (but not co-worker support) are partially confirmed for physical demands. In conclusion, the present research shows that effective management of nurses’ work context can decisively contribute to finding the difficult balance between personal and professional time.

Abstract
AIM To analyse the effect of mindfulness training on levels of burnout among nurses. BACKGROUND Burnout syndrome is a common occupational hazard for nursing staff. Mindfulness training has been proposed as a valid intervention for burnout. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES The CINAHL, LILACS, Medline, ProQuest, PsycINFO, Scielo and Scopus databases were consulted, using the search equation 'Nurs * AND burnout AND mindfulness'. There was no restriction on the year of publication. REVIEW METHODS Papers were selected for analysis in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. The meta-analysis was carried out using Review Manager 5.3 software. RESULTS The sample was of 17 articles including 632 nurses. Mindfulness training reduces levels of burnout, producing lower scores for emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and higher for personal accomplishment. The differences in the means were 1.32 (95% CI: -9.41-6.78), 1.91 (95% CI: -4.50-0.68) and 2.12 (95% CI: -9.91-14.14), respectively, between the intervention and control groups. CONCLUSION Mindfulness training reduces the emotional burden and hence levels of burnout, among nurses. However, further randomized clinical trials are required.

Abstract
None Physician burnout is a serious and growing threat to the medical profession and may undermine efforts to maintain a sufficient physician workforce to care for the growing and aging patient population in the United States. Burnout involves a host of complex underlying associations and potential for risk. While prevalence is unknown, recent estimates of physician burnout are quite high, approaching 50% or more, with midcareer physicians at highest risk. Sleep deprivation due to shift-work schedules, high workload, long hours, sleep interruptions, and insufficient recovery sleep have been implicated in the genesis and perpetuation of burnout. Maladaptive attitudes regarding sleep and endurance also may increase the risk for sleep deprivation among attending physicians. While duty-hour restrictions have been instituted to protect sleep opportunity among trainees, virtually no such effort has been made for attending physicians who have completed their training or practicing physicians in nonacademic settings. It is the position of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine that a critical need exists to evaluate the roles of sleep disruption, sleep deprivation, and circadian misalignment in physician well-being and burnout. Such evaluation may pave the way for the development of effective countermeasures that promote healthy sleep, with the goal of reducing burnout and its negative impacts such as a shrinking physician workforce, poor physician health and functional outcomes, lower quality of care, and compromised patient safety.

Abstract
Schedule changes associated with rotating shifts can interfere with the circadian rhythms of nurses and thereby affect their sleep duration, sleep quality, work efficiency, and work performance. The objectives of this study was to investigate differences in workday sleep fragmentation, rest-activity cycle, sleep quality, and activity level among nurses working different shifts. After filling out a basic information questionnaire and completing the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, participants were asked to wear an actigraph and keep sleep records for seven consecutive days. Data pertaining to wake after sleep onset (WASO), 24-hour autocorrelation coefficient (r24), and daytime activity mean was collected in order to investigate workday sleep fragmentation, rest-activity cycle, and daytime activity level. We obtained complete questionnaires and data from 191 nurses. Day- and evening-shift nurses had more regular workday rest-activity cycles than did night-shift nurses (F = 51.26, p < .001). After controlling for r24 coefficients, we determined that nurses who experienced greater workday sleep fragmentation had higher PSQI scores (β = .18, p = .008). After controlling for WASO times, we determined that nurses who had more regular rest-activity cycles on workdays had lower PSQI scores (β = - .16, p = .036). After controlling for shift type and WASO times, we determined that nurses with higher PSQI scores displayed lower activity levels (β = - .21, p = .015) and those with higher r24 coefficients displayed higher activity levels (β = .18, p = .040) on workdays. We then examined the causal path relationships. Among the shifts, only the day-shift nurses had a higher r24 (β = -.59, p < .001) than did the night-shift nurses; WASO exerted a significant impact on PSQI scores (β = .20, p = .002); r24 had a significant and negative influence on PSQI scores (β = -.38, p < .001), and PSQI scores significantly and negatively influenced workday activity levels (β = -.20, p = .006). This study determined that day- and evening-shift nurses enjoyed more regular and consistent rest-activity cycles than did night-shift nurses; nurses with greater workday sleep fragmentation and/or more irregular rest-activity cycles experienced poorer sleep quality; and nurses suffering from poorer sleep quality displayed lower daytime activity levels on workdays.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Burnout is a syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, increased depersonalization, and a diminished sense of personal accomplishment due to chronic emotional stress at work. Burnout impacts job satisfaction, job performance, vulnerability to illnesses, and interpersonal relationships. There is a gap in the systematic data on the burden of burnout among healthcare professionals from different sectors of healthcare in Middle Eastern countries. Our objective was to examine the burden of burnout among healthcare providers in the Middle East, how it was assessed, which sectors were included, and what interventions have been used. METHODS Articles were found through a systematic review of search results including PubMed, Web of Science (Thomson Reuters), and PsycINFO (EBSCO) using search terms reflecting burnout in Middle Eastern countries among populations of healthcare providers. Studies were included if they examined a quantitative measure of burnout among healthcare providers in the Middle East. RESULTS There were 138 articles that met our inclusion criteria for this systematic review. Studies focused on burnout in the Middle East among physicians (N = 54 articles), nurses (N = 55), combined populations of healthcare workers (N = 22), and medical students (N = 7). The Maslach Burnout Inventory was the most common tool to measure burnout. Burnout is common among physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, with prevalence estimates predominantly ranging between 40 and 60%. Burnout among healthcare providers in the Middle East is associated with characteristics of their work environments, exposure to violence and terror, and emotional distress and low social support. CONCLUSIONS Burnout is highly prevalent among healthcare providers across countries in the Middle East. Previous studies examining burnout in this region have limitations in their methodology. More thoroughly developed epidemiologic studies of burnout are necessary. Health system strengthening is needed in a region that has endured years of ongoing conflict, and there is an urgency to design and implement programs that tackle burnout among health professionals.

Abstract
Background: Nursing work environment consists of a number of work-related psychosocial risk factors such as excessive workloads, lack of social support, emotional demands, job insecurity and confronting with challenging situations all of which may induce burnout. The aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship between work-related psychosocial factors and burnout among Iranian nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 522 nurses. The data related to work-related psychosocial factors and burnout was gathered using Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), respectively. Pearson’s correlation coefficients were used to examine the relationship between work-related psychosocial factors and burnout. Results: Mean scores of the dimensions of burnout for emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment were 13.6 (SD=8.6), 18.42 (SD=7.1), and 28.45 (SD= 9.15), respectively. Psychological and physical job demands were positively correlated with different dimensions of burnout while social support and job control showed negative correlation with them. Conclusion: Appropriate interventions on reducing job demands both psychologically and physically and increasing social support and job control are suggested in prevention of burnout among the studied nurses.
