Abstract
BACKGROUND Neurologic manifestations of Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) have been associated with patients' disease severity and outcome. This study aimed to describe the frequency and characteristics of the neurological manifestations in a group of hospitalized individuals with COVID-19 and their associations with patient outcomes. METHODS Patients aged 18 years or older admitted to a local hospital between April and June 2020 with SARS-CoV-2 detected by RT-PCR were included in this retrospective observational study. The characteristics of participants were collected from electronic medical records using a structured questionnaire. A Poisson regression model was used to examine the influence of neurological manifestations on mortality. RESULTS A total of 305 participants with COVID-19 were included, with 57.7 % of them presenting neurological symptoms. There were 62 (20.3 %) individuals with acute encephalopathy, with a mean age of 65.5 ± 15.9 years. In this group, higher Prevalence Ratios (PR) of comorbidities (1.6) and severe disease (3.6) were present, predisposing factors for acute encephalopathy. They were also more likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit (3.1) and to die (2.4). The median Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) was 7 (Interquartile Range [IQR: 4‒12]). Fifty-two (17 %) participants presented chemosensory dysfunction, with a mean age 53.3 ± 14 years and a lower PR of comorbidity (0.8) than those without. The severe diseases' PR was slightly higher (1.1), but the PR of ICU admission (0.7), and deaths (0.4) was lower. The LNR was 3.8 (IQR: 2.2-7.8). Poisson regression analysis revealed that severe illness (PR = 3.13), cardiopathy (PR = 1.65), acute encephalopathy (PR = 1.49), diabetes (PR = 1.46), and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (PR = 1.04) were associated with death. Conversely, having chemosensory disorders (PR = 0.44) and a prolonged hospital stay (PR = 0.96) were associated with survival. CONCLUSION Patients with acute encephalopathy had more severe forms of COVID-19 and higher mortality. In contrast, chemosensory dysfunction was associated with milder disease manifestations and a better prognosis.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has led to a significant burden on global healthcare systems. COVID-19-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) is among one of the complications, that has emerged as a critical and frequent condition in COVID-19 patients. This AKI among COVID-19 patients is associated with poor outcomes, and high mortality rates, especially in those with severe AKI or requiring renal replacement therapy. COVID-19-induced AKI represents a significant complication with complex pathophysiology and multifactorial risk factors. Indeed, several pathophysiological mechanisms, including direct viral invasion of renal cells, systemic inflammation, endothelial and thrombotic abnormalities as well as nephrotoxic drugs and rhabdomyolysis are believed to underlie this condition. Moreover, histopathological and immunohistopathological findings commonly observed in postmortem studies include acute tubular necrosis, glomerular injury, and the presence of viral particles within renal tissue and urine. Identified risk factors for developing AKI vary among studies, depending on regions, underlying conditions, and the severity of the disease. Abstract
This study aimed to assess the association between the cycle threshold (Ct) values of SARS-CoV-2 and the risk of death from COVID-19 in adult patients from the Amazonas region of Peru during the circulation of the Lambda, Gamma, and Delta variants. The study population included both hospitalized and outpatient patients, symptomatic and asymptomatic, between August 2020 and August 2021. The standardized Ct values of the ORF1ab gene were categorized into low and high Ct groups based on the median Ct value (28.4). Mortality data within 60 days were obtained from the Peruvian epidemiological surveillance system (Notiweb). The risk of death was estimated using Cox regression, adjusting for relevant predictors and potential confounding variables. Among symptomatic COVID-19 patients, no significant difference in the risk of death was observed between those with low and high Ct values (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 1.61; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.97-2.67; p = 0.067). However, hospitalized patients with low Ct values had a significantly higher risk of death compared to those with high Ct values (aHR = 1.82; 95% CI, 1.06-3.12; p = 0.030). This association persisted after adjusting for age, sex, occupational group, symptom duration, comorbidities, and epidemic dynamics. In conclusion, while Ct values in symptomatic COVID-19 patients (both hospitalized and outpatient) are not associated with a 60-day mortality risk, a low Ct value is linked to an increased risk of death in hospitalized patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hypoalbuminemia is associated with poor nutritional status and inflammatory response in infectious diseases. It is commonly observed in COVID-19 patients. The aim of this study is to assess the association of serum albumin with hospitalization and mortality in dialysis patients with COVID-19. METHODS We retrospectively collected 250 dialysis patients, with and without COVID-19. Demographic characteristics, clinical symptoms, and laboratory tests on admission or the confirmation of COVID-19 were collected. Univariate logistic regression model was used to evaluate the association of various factors with hospitalization and death in these patients. RESULTS A total of 250 patients were included between December 1, 2022, and February 1, 2023, in our dialysis center. Among them, 218 were dialysis patients with COVID-19, and 32 were without COVID-19. Ten patients died due to COVID-19, and 8 patients had clinical data. In dialysis patients with COVID-19, a significant difference in serum albumin levels was observed between outpatients (37.28 ± 4.01 g/L) and hospitalized patients (33.42 ± 3.82 g/L), as well as between survivors (37.12 ± 4.07 g/L) and non-survivors (31.92 ± 2.52 g/L). Univariate logistic regression showed that the reduced albumin levels were associated with an increased risk of hospitalization and mortality in dialysis patients with COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed that reduced serum albumin is associated with an increased risk of hospitalization and mortality in dialysis patients with COVID-19. Low serum albumin levels suggest a poor prognosis and nutritional support may improve clinical outcomes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the incidence and mortality of patients with primary spinal tumors remain less explored. We sought to illuminate the influence of the pandemic on the diagnosis and treatment of primary spinal tumors, providing valuable information for improving diagnosis and treatment strategies when facing unprecedented healthcare strains. METHODS Initially, we assessed the demographic characteristics and pathological types of patients with primary spinal tumors who died attributed to COVID-19 during the pandemic (2020-2021). Next, we extracted data on the age-adjusted incidence and mortality rates of primary spinal tumors between 2018 and 2021. The rates for the entire population were retrieved first, followed by stratification based on demographic characteristics and type of pathology. The rates from 2018 to 2019, before the pandemic, served as a reference for comparison with the pandemic period (2020-2021). The SEER 22 Registries database was adopted for this study. RESULTS In 2020 and 2021, COVID-19 emerged as the leading cause of death among patients with primary spinal tumors. The majority of patients who died attributed to COVID-19 were male, white, and over 60 years of age. Notably, 46.8% (58 out of 124) of them were diagnosed with primary spinal meningiomas. Between the pre-pandemic (2018-2019) and pandemic (2020-2021) periods, the incidence of primary spinal tumors decreased from 1.31 to 1.22 per 100,000 individuals, with a particularly significant decline observed in meningiomas. Moreover, the mortality rates increased from 0.30 to 0.37 per 100,000 individuals during the same period. This increase in mortality was significant among white individuals, those aged ≥ 70 years, and patients with primary spinal meningiomas. CONCLUSIONS Our analysis revealed that COVID-19 emerged as the primary threat to the survival of patients with primary spinal tumors during the pandemic. Compared with pre-pandemic data, we observed a significant decline in the incidence rates and a rise in mortality rates for primary spinal tumors.

Abstract
Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) infection has a significant mortality rate. Despite the disease's extensive effects, little is known about the prognostic indicators that can be used. We aimed to assess the prognostic value of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio (LCR) and platelet-to- lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in predicting mortality of intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Demographic data, underlying diseases, laboratory parameters were evaluated. The study included 222 cases. The mortality rate was 57.65%. No significant differences in terms of sex, age, or underlying disease were observed between the two groups with and without mortality. Obesity, oxygen therapy, invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) rates and high SOFA (Sequential Organ Failure Assessment) scores were found to be significantly higher in the group with a mortal course. The mortality rate was significantly higher in patients with lung involvement over 50%, with a low lymphocyte count at ICU admission. In this patient group, NLR was found to be higher, and LCR was found to be lower (P = .001). Although there was no significant difference in PLR between the two groups in univariate analysis, multivariate analysis revealed that PLR was independently associated with mortality. High NLR and low LCR values at ICU admission might serve as early warning signs for healthcare providers, allowing them to identify patients at higher risk of mortality.

Abstract
Many COVID-19 outbreaks occurred in senior care facilities during the last three years. Senior care facilities are nursing places for the long-term treatment and care of senior citizens, who are prone to be exposed to an infectious disease that spreads into these buildings. Therefore, this study investigated airborne contaminant transmissions based on outbreak cases in senior care facilities in Korea and analyzed the potential impact of architectural features in a selected senior care facility using network simulations. The results showed that during COVID-19 outbreaks in 85 senior care facilities the staff accounted for the largest proportion of the index cases, indicating that the staff members would be the primary virus carriers in the initial process of the virus transmission in the senior care facilities. Network simulations indicated that the (reverse) stack effect could significantly influence airborne contaminant transmission in these facilities during the summer and winter months. The indoor airborne contaminant exposure may change according to seasonal indoor airflows, with the potential for long-distance airborne contaminant transfer through shafts (e.g., elevators and staircases) in the senior care facility. The findings of this study can serve as a reference for developing customized countermeasures against airborne contaminant transmissions in senior care facilities.

Abstract
Background and Aims On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a pandemic. The spread of the Delta variant of coronavirus started in June 2021 and accounted for the fifth peak of COVID-19 in Iran in July 2021. According to reports from other countries, vaccination protects against severe diseases caused by COVID-19, including the Delta variant. Studies have also shown that vaccination provides strong protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection, COVID-19-related hospitalization, and mortality. This retrospective cohort study was designed based on the medical care monitoring center database of Sayyad Shirazi Hospital. Methods COVID-19 confirmed patients' data were extracted for this study from June 22, 2021, to September 22, 2021 including demographic characteristics, signs and symptoms, ICU admission, need for aggressive oxygen therapy, including intubation, mortality, and vaccination status. Results A total of 2962 patients were enrolled. Being vaccinated was associated with a 4.14-fold increase in survival (adjusted OR = 4.14; 95% CI: 2.22-7.69; p < 0.01), and individuals in a younger age group demonstrated a 5.58-fold higher likelihood of surviving (adjusted OR = 5.58; 95% CI: 4.25-8.14; p < 0.01). The risk of severe COVID-19 was significantly lower in vaccinated individuals, showing a 3.12-fold decrease in risk (adjusted OR = 3.12; 95% CI: 2.06-4.72; p < 0.01), and in younger age groups, the risk exhibited a 3.28-fold decrease (adjusted OR = 3.28; 95% CI: 2.66-4.04; p < 0.01). Conclusion The present results suggest that receiving at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine had a significant relationship with decreased COVID-19 severity and mortality in vaccinated patients compared to unvaccinated patients.

To fill this gap, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis following established guidelines. Our search included relevant articles published between 2019 and 2023 from various sources. We assessed study heterogeneity and publication bias, and performed subgroup and sensitivity analyses. Our findings indicate that the COVID-19 vaccine acceptance rate among patients with chronic diseases in Ethiopia was 55.4%. We also found that good knowledge and a favorable attitude toward the vaccine were positively associated with the acceptance rate. Based on these results, we recommend that healthcare professionals, policymakers, and healthcare guide developers should work more to address the relatively low acceptance rate. Improving the knowledge and attitude further about the COVID-19 vaccines is crucial. Future research should include community-based and qualitative studies to enhance our understanding of vaccines acceptance.

Abstract
Mucormycosis is an emerging, life-threatening human infection caused by fungi of the order Mucorales. Metabolic disorders uniquely predispose an ever-expanding group of patients to mucormycosis via poorly understood mechanisms. Therefore, it is highly likely that uncharacterized host metabolic effectors confer protective immunity against mucormycosis. Here, we uncover a master regulatory role of albumin in host defense against Mucorales through the modulation of the fungal pathogenicity program. Our initial studies identified severe hypoalbuminemia as a prominent metabolic abnormality and a biomarker of poor outcome in independent cohorts of mucormycosis patients. Strikingly, we found that purified albumin selectively inhibits Mucorales growth among a range of human pathogens, and albumin-deficient mice display susceptibility specifically to mucormycosis. The antifungal activity of albumin is mediated by the release of bound free fatty acids (FFAs). Importantly, albumin prevents FFA oxidation, which results in loss of their antifungal properties. A high degree of FFA oxidation is found in the sera of patients with mucormycosis. Physiologically, albumin-bound FFAs blocks the expression of the mycotoxin mucoricin and renders Mucorales avirulent in vivo. Overall, we discovered a novel host defense mechanism that directs the pathogen to suppress its growth and the expression of virulence factors in response to unfavorable metabolic cues regulated by albumin. These findings have major implications for the pathogenesis and management of mucormycosis.

Abstract
Serum albumin on admission has been investigated among inpatients with COVID-19. However, studies on the lowest level of serum albumin during hospitalization and adverse outcomes are limited. This research aimed to explore association between them in older adults with COVID-19. A retrospective study was conducted with 300 patients aged 60 or older with first confirmed COVID-19 from January to February 2023. An adverse outcome was defined as development of acute respiratory failure, shock, or death. Data on demographics, comorbidities, laboratory parameters, the initial phase of COVID-19, coinfection, sepsis, receipt of antiviral treatment and outcomes were gathered from the electronic medical records. The association between the lowest level of serum albumin and adverse outcomes was analyzed using univariate and multivariate regression models, along with generalized additive models. After adjusting potential confounders, nonlinear relationship with an inflection point of 29.1 g/L was detected between the lowest level of serum albumin and adverse outcomes in the elderly. The effect sizes and the confidence intervals on the left and right sides of the inflection point were 0.667 (0.520, 0.856) and 1.171 (0.875, 1.568), respectively. This demonstrated that the lowest level of serum albumin was negatively correlated with adverse outcomes when albumin was <29.1 g/L. A rise of 1 unit in the lowest level of albumin equated to a 33.3% decrease in the risk of adverse outcomes. The correlation between the lowest level of serum albumin and adverse outcomes of COVID-19 is a nonlinear. this study indicates that serum albumin levels should be sustained above the critical inflection point identified to reduce the risk of adverse outcomes.

Abstract
The severity of COVID-19's outcomes has been positively correlated with an increased risk of respiratory failure and death, especially in patients with chronic illnesses. This case-control design study aims to examine the correlation in the Palestinian population in light of its impact on diabetic patients. The study was conducted from March 2020 to June 2021 on 417 patients admitted to the Palestinian National Center for Rehabilitation. Of them, 198 cases were tested positive for COVID-19 and had diabetes, whereas the remaining 219 were those who tested positive for COVID-19 but were not diagnosed with diabetes and acted as controls. Data from patient files were collected to address the study questions. Patients' ages ranged from 17 to 98 years, with a mean age of 58. Male participants represented 53.5% of the total. The results of the current study indicated that the case fatality rate (CFR) was 14.2% for all participants and 19.7% for patients with diabetes. In regard to patients' health conditions, 5.7% had cardiovascular diseases (CVD), 33.6% had hypertension, 6.5% had kidney diseases, and 47.4% had diabetes. According to the multivariate analysis, diabetic patients had a 1.63 times higher risk for COVID-19 infection compared to nondiabetic patients (adjustment of odds ratio of 1.63 and confidence interval [CI] = 0.354-1.856). This is the first study to investigate the relationship between the severity of COVID-19 outcomes in Palestine and the diabetes status, and the majority of its findings are consistent with other research studies that assessed the impact of COVID-19 on diabetic patients (with minor variations in the number and percentage). The study confirms that along with diabetes, age, hypertension, kidney diseases, shortness of breath, requirement of oxygen, D-dimer, C-reactive protein (CRP), kidney function test (KFT), and days of hospitalization were also associated with severe COVID-19 outcomes, whereas gender, CVDs, and liver function test (LFT) were not associated with severe COVID-19 outcomes.

Abstract
Despite the end of the global Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the risk factors for COVID-19 severity continue to be a pivotal area of research. Specifically, studying the impact of the genomic diversity of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on COVID-19 severity is crucial for predicting severe outcomes. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 genome sequence, genotype, patient age, gender, and vaccination status on the severity of COVID-19, and to develop accurate and robust prediction models. The training set (n = 12,038), primary testing set (n = 4,006), and secondary testing set (n = 2,845) consist of SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences with patient information, which were obtained from Global Initiative on Sharing all Individual Data (GISAID) spanning over four years. Four machine learning methods were employed to construct prediction models. By extracting SARS-CoV-2 genomic features, optimizing model parameters, and integrating models, this study improved the prediction accuracy. Furthermore, Shapley Additive exPlanes (SHAP) was applied to analyze the interpretability of the model and to identify risk factors, providing insights for the management of severe cases. The proposed ensemble model achieved an F-score of 88.842% and an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.956 on the global testing dataset. In addition to factors such as patient age, gender, and vaccination status, over 40 amino acid site mutation characteristics were identified to have a significant impact on the severity of COVID-19. This work has the potential to facilitate the early identification of COVID-19 patients with high risks of severe illness, thus effectively reducing the rates of severe cases and mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact globally, and understanding the relationship between inflammatory markers and disease progression is crucial for effective management. This retrospective study aimed to examine the association between various inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), D-dimer, ferritin, and procalcitonin (PCT), and the characteristics of disease progression and outcomes in individuals affected by COVID-19. METHODS This study collected raw data from 470 patients who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 using RT-PCR. RESULTS The logistic regression analysis revealed that elevated LDH levels were associated with male gender, ICU admission, low oxygen saturation (O2 < 93%), the need for mechanical ventilation, death, and the presence of lung infiltrates. Higher D-dimer levels were associated with older age, diabetes mellitus, cardiac disease, and low oxygen saturation. Ferritin levels were significantly associated with older age, ICU admission, low oxygen saturation, mechanical ventilation, and lung infiltrates. In contrast, CRP was only significant regarding lung infiltrates and procalcitonin levels were not significantly associated with any of the examined factors. CONCLUSION This study highlights the importance of monitoring key inflammatory markers, such as LDH, D-dimer, and ferritin, as they are significantly associated with the severity of COVID-19 illness. These findings can inform clinical decision-making and guide the development of targeted interventions to improve patient outcomes.

Abstract
Many older patients with COVID-19 likely have co-morbid osteoporosis. We investigated the clinical outcomes of COVID-19 patients with osteoporosis. This was a retrospective cohort study using national claims data from Korea encoded in the common data model. Patients aged ≥ 50 years diagnosed with COVID-19 infection between January 2020 and April 2022 were included and stratified into two groups according to a history of osteoporosis. Clinical outcomes of COVID-19 infection were analyzed using logistic regression analysis after large-scale propensity score stratification. Of the 597,011 patients with COVID-19 included in the study, 105,172 had a history of osteoporosis. In patients with a history of osteoporosis, the odds of mortality decreased (odds ratio [OR] 0.82, P < 0.002), whereas most clinical outcomes of COVID-19 did not exhibit differences compared to those without such a history. Osteoporosis patients with a history of fractures showed increased odds of pneumonia, hospitalization, major adverse cardiac events, venous thromboembolism, and mortality, compared to patients without osteoporosis (ORs 1.34-1.58, P < 0.001 to P = 0.001). Our study suggests that patients with severe osteoporosis who have experienced fractures have an elevated risk of severe complications with COVID-19, while osteoporosis patients without fractures who have sought medical attention have a lower risk of mortality.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to identify factors that influence the mortality rate of patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19)-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA). Methods In this cross-sectional study, data from 23 centers across 15 countries, spanning the period of March 2020 to December 2021, were retrospectively collected. The study population comprised patients who developed invasive pulmonary aspergillosis while being treated for COVID-19 in the intensive care unit. Cox regression and decision tree analyses were used to identify factors associated with mortality in patients with CAPA. Results A total of 162 patients (males, 65.4 %; median age: 64 [25th-75th: 54.0-73.8] years) were included in the study, of whom 113 died during the 90-day follow-up period. The median duration from CAPA diagnosis to death was 12 (25th-75th: 7-19) days. In the multivariable Cox regression model, an age of ≥65 years (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.05, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.37-3.07), requiring vasopressor therapy at the time of CAPA diagnosis (HR: 1.80, 95 % CI: 1.17-2.76), and receiving renal replacement therapy at the time of CAPA diagnosis (HR: 2.27, 95 % CI: 1.35-3.82) were identified as predictors of mortality. Decision tree analysis revealed that patients with CAPA aged ≥65 years who received corticosteroid treatment for COVID-19 displayed higher mortality rates (estimated rate: 1.6, observed in 46 % of patients). Conclusion This study concluded that elderly patients with CAPA who receive corticosteroids are at a significantly higher risk of mortality, particularly if they experience multiorgan failure.

Abstract
Objective To analyze the death of Brazilian pregnant and postpartum women due to COVID-19 or unspecific cause. Methods This is retrospective, descriptive-exploratory, population-based study carried out with the Sistema de Informação de Vigilância Epidemiológica da Gripe (SIVEP-Gripe) database, with pregnant and postpartum women of reproductive age who died from confirmed COVID-19 between 2020 and 2021. The chosen variables were: age, gestational period, type and number of comorbidities, skin color, using the statistical software R Foundation for Statistical Computing Platform, version 4.0.3 and Statistical Package for Social Science, version 29.0 for analysis. Results A total of 19,333 cases of pregnant and postpartum women aged between 10 and 55 years diagnosed with SARS were identified, whether due to confirmed COVID-19 or unspecific causes. Of these, 1,279 died, these cases were classified into two groups according to the cause of death: deaths from COVID-19 (n= 1,026) and deaths from SARS of unspecific cause (n= 253). Conclusion The risk of death increased among black and brown women, in the postpartum period and with the presence of comorbidities, mainly diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and obesity. The data presented here draw attention to the number of deaths from SARS, especially among sociodemographic profiles, precarious access to health, such as the black population. In addition, limitations in adequate access to health care are reinforced by even lower rates of ICU admissions among women who died from SARS of an unspecified cause.

Abstract
During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, clinical prevention, early diagnosis, and hematological monitoring were challenging areas. This study aims to compare risk factors and hematological and biochemical data in non-survivor group patients with COVID-19 versus survivor group patients. A total of 204 patients with COVID-19 were selected as research subjects from December 2022 to January 2023. We analyzed the age, sex, time from onset to admission, and laboratory test indicators upon admission. The differences between surviving and deceased patients and mortality-related risk factors were examined. Among the 204 patients, 168 survived, whereas 36 died during hospitalization. Significant differences were observed between the two groups with COVID-19 across various factors, including age (p < 0.0001), WBC count (p < 0.0001), RBC count (p < 0.05), neutrophils (p < 0.0001), lymphocytes (p < 0.05), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) (p < 0.0001), RBC distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD) (p < 0.0001), RBC distribution width coefficient of variation (RDW-CV) (p < 0.0001), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (p < 0.05), albumin (ALB) (p < 0.0001), creatinine (CR) (p < 0.0001), uric acid (UA) (p < 0.0001), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) (p < 0.0001), plasma thrombin time (TT) (p < 0.05), prothrombin time (PT) (p < 0.0001), and D-dimer (p < 0.0001). Multivariate logistic analysis revealed that older age, CR, UA, and ALB were independent factors associated with death (p < 0.05). Elderly patients with underlying diseases, abnormal routine blood test indices, and abnormal renal function and coagulation indices are at an increased worse prognosis and should be identified early. Age, UA, CR, and ALB can be used as predictors to assess the worse prognosis in the hospital.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to analyse the correlation between blood glucose control and the severity of COVID-19 infection in patients with diabetes. METHODS Clinical and imaging data of a total of 146 patients with diabetes combined with COVID-19 who visited our hospital between December 2022 and January 2023 were retrospectively collected. The patients were divided into the 'good blood glucose control' group and the 'poor blood glucose control' group based on an assessment of their blood glucose control. The clinical data, computed tomography (CT) appearance and score and the severity of COVID-19 infection of the two groups were compared, with the severity of COVID-19 infection being the dependent variable to analyse other influencing factors. RESULTS The group with poor blood glucose control showed a higher lobar involvement degree and total CT severity score (CTSS) than the group with good blood glucose control (13.30 ± 5.25 vs. 10.38 ± 4.84, p < 0.05). The two groups exhibited no statistically significant differences in blood lymphocyte, leukocyte, C-reaction protein, pleural effusion, consolidation, ground glass opacity or crazy-paving signs. Logistic regression analysis showed that the total CTSS significantly influences the clinical severity of patients (odds ratio 1.585, p < 0.05), whereas fasting plasma glucose and blood glucose control are not independent factors influencing clinical severity (both p > 0.05). The area under the curve (AUC) of CTSS prediction of critical COVID-19 was 0.895 with sensitivity of 79.3% and specificity of 88.1% when the threshold value is 12. CONCLUSION Blood glucose control is significantly correlated with the CTSS; the higher the blood glucose is, the more severe the lung manifestation. The CTSS can also be used to evaluate and predict the clinical severity of COVID-19.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The COVID-19 pandemic unveiled huge challenges in health workforce governance in the context of public health emergencies in Africa. Several countries applied several measures to ensure access to qualified and skilled health workers to respond to the pandemic and provide essential health services. However, there has been limited documentation of these measures. This study was undertaken to examine the health workforce governance strategies applied by 15 countries in the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa Region in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS We extracted data from country case studies developed from national policy documents, reports and grey literature obtained from the Ministries of Health and other service delivery agencies. This study was conducted from October 2020 to January 2021 in 15 countries - Angola, Burkina Faso, Chad, Eswatini, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo. RESULTS All 15 countries had national multi-sectoral bodies to manage the COVID-19 response and a costed national COVID-19 response plan. All the countries also reflected human resources for health (HRH) activities along the different response pillars. These activities included training for health workers, and budget for the recruitment or mobilization of additional health workers to support the response, and for provision of financial and non-financial incentives for health workers. Nine countries recruited additional 35,812 health workers either on a permanent or temporary basis to respond to the COVID-19 with an abridged process of recruitment implemented to ensure needed health workers are in place on time. Six countries redeployed 3671 health workers to respond to the COVID-19. The redeployment of existing health workers was reported to have impacted negatively on essential health service provision. CONCLUSION Strengthening multi-sector engagement in the development of public health emergency plans is critical as this promotes the development of holistic interventions needed to improve health workforce availability, retention, incentivization, and coordination. It also ensures optimized utilization based on competencies, especially for the existing health workers.

Abstract
Background The COVID-19 mortality rate continues to be high in low-income countries like Ethiopia as the new variant's transmission expands and the countries' limited capacity to combat the disease causes severe outcomes, including deaths. The aim of this study is to determine the magnitude of the COVID-19 mortality rate and its determinants in Ethiopia. Methods The main electronic databases searched were PubMed, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and African journals online. The included studies' qualities were assessed independently using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. The data was extracted in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet format. The pooled effect size and odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals across studies were determined using the random-effects model. I2 is used to estimate the percentage of overall variation across studies due to heterogeneity. Egger's test and funnel plot were used to find the published bias. A subgroup analysis was conducted. The effect of a single study on the overall estimation was determined by sensitivity analysis. Results A total of 21 studies with 42,307 study participants were included in the final analysis. The pooled prevalence of COVID-19 mortality was 14.44% (95% CI: 10.35-19.08%), with high significant heterogeneity (I2 = 98.92%, p < 0.001). The risk of mortality from COVID-19 disease was higher for patients with comorbidity (AHR = 1.84, 95% CI: 1.13-2.54) and cardiovascular disease (AHR = 2, 95% CI: 1.09-2.99) than their counterparts without these conditions. Conclusion A significant number of COVID-19 patients died in Ethiopia. COVID-19 patients with comorbidities, particularly those with cardiovascular disease, should receive special attention to reduce COVID-19 mortality. Abstract
BACKGROUND In the post-COVID-19 condition, infection control education is important for geriatric care workers who care for the elderly and are vulnerable to emerging infectious diseases. This study was conducted to enhance the insight into the experiences of geriatric care workers in managing novel infectious diseases (COVID-19) and to identify the newly required educational requirements necessary to effectively implement infectious disease control. METHODS This is a qualitative and pilot study using focus group interviews. Data from 10 participants were collected using a focus group interview. The data were analyzed using Qualitative content analysis. RESULTS The findings showed that geriatric healthcare workers experienced difficulties following infection control protocols and emotional distress related to visitor restrictions and had an increased workload. The participants requested further education regarding general knowledge of infectious diseases to decrease their fears of infection and reported that visual and practical teaching methods were preferable. CONCLUSIONS Further attention is needed regarding the education of infection control to strengthen infection prevention in long-term care facilities vulnerable to the spread of emerging infectious diseases.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study is to evaluate the interference of the continuous use of drug classes in the expression of biomarkers during the first week of hospitalization and in the prognosis of patients with COVID-19. Methods The patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and confirmed with SARS-CoV-2 by RT-qPCR assay underwent the collection of fasting whole blood samples for further analysis. Other data also extracted for this study included age, sex, clinical symptoms, related comorbidities, smoking status, and classes of continuous use. Routine serum biochemical parameters, including alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, C-reactive protein, N-terminal fragment of B-type natriuretic peptide, and cardiac troponin, were measured. Results In this cross-sectional study, a total of 176 patients with COVID-19 hospitalizations were included. Among them, 155 patients were discharged (88.5%), and 21 patients died (12%). Among the drug classes evaluated, we verified that the continuous use of diuretic 4.800 (1.853-11.67) (p = 0.0007) and antihypercholesterolemic 3.188 (1.215-7.997) (p = 0.0171) drug classes presented a significant relative risk of death as an outcome when compared to the group of patients who were discharged. We evaluated biomarkers in patients who used continuous antihypercholesterolemic and diuretic drug classes in the first week of hospitalization. We observed significant positive correlations between the levels of CRP with cardiac troponin (r = 0.714), IL-6 (r = 0.600), and IL-10 (r = 0.900) in patients who used continuous anticholesterolemic and diuretic drug classes and were deceased. In these patients, we also evaluated the possible correlations between the biomarkers AST, NT-ProBNP, cardiac troponin, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10. We observed a significantly negative correlations in AST levels with NT-ProBNP (r = -0.500), cardiac troponin (r = -1.00), IL-6 (r = -1.00), and IL-10 (r = -1.00) and a positive correlation with IL-8 (r = 0.500). We also observed significant negative correlation in the levels of NT-ProBNP with IL-10 (r = -0.800) and a positive correlation with cardiac troponin (r = 0.800). IL-6 levels exhibited positive correlations with cardiac troponin (r = 0.800) and IL-10 (r = 0.700). Conclusion In this study, we observed that hospitalized COVID-19 patients who continued using anticholesterolemic and diuretic medications showed a higher number of correlations between biomarkers, indicating a poorer clinical prognosis. These correlations suggest an imbalanced immune response to injuries caused by SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is driven by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, which has led to an enormous burden on patient morbidity and mortality. The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) plays a significant role in various pulmonary diseases. Since SARS-CoV-2 utilizes the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)2 receptor to exert its virulence and pathogenicity, the RAAS is of particular importance in COVID 19. METHODS Our preliminary study investigates retrospectively the influence of selected ACE-polymorphisms (I/D location at intron 16 in the B-coding sequence (rs4646994) and A-240T (rs 4291) at the A-promoter) as well as ACE1 and ACE2 serum levels on disease severity and the inflammatory response in inpatients and outpatients with COVID-19. RESULTS Our study included 96 outpatients and 88 inpatients (65.9% male, mean age 60 years) with COVID-19 from April to December 2020 in four locations in Germany. Of the hospitalized patients, 88.6% participants were moderately ill (n = 78, 64% male, median age 60 years), and 11.4% participants were severely ill or deceased (n = 10, 90% male, median age 71 years). We found no polymorphism-related difference in disease, in age distribution, time to hospitalization and time of hospitalization for the inpatient group. ACE1 serum levels were significantly increased in the DD compared to the II polymorphism and in the TT compared to the AA polymorphism. There was no significant difference in ACE 1 serum levels l between moderately ill and severely ill patients. However, participants requiring oxygen supplementation had significantly elevated ACE1 levels compared to participants not requiring oxygen, with no difference in ACE2 levels whereas females had significantly higher ACE2 levels. CONCLUSIONS Although there were no differences in the distribution of ACE polymorphisms in disease severity, we found increased proinflammatory regulation of the RAAS in patients with oxygen demand and increased serum ACE2 levels in women, indicating a possible enhanced anti-inflammatory immune response. Abstract
Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a rare neurovascular condition that has been observed in individuals with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This systematic review aimed to explore the sex differences and characteristics of concurrent COVID-19 and CVST cases. A total of 212 CVST patients were included in the study. Women with CVST had a slightly higher mean age compared to men (47.359 years vs 46.08 years). Women were more likely to report symptoms such as fever (56.1%) and decreased sense of smell or taste (71.4%), while men more frequently experienced nausea or vomiting (55.6%), headache (62.9%), and seizures (72%). Notably, current smokers, who were predominantly men, had a higher occurrence of CVST. On the other hand, women had a higher likelihood of CVST risk factors such as oral contraceptive pill (OCP) use and autoimmune diseases. Treatment approaches also showed sex-based differences. Unfractionated heparin was administered more often to women with CVST (63.2%). The in-hospital mortality rate for CVST patients was 21.3%, with men having a significantly higher mortality rate than women (65.2% vs 34.8%, P = .027). Survival analysis revealed that factors such as smoking history, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, OCP use, COVID-19 symptoms, CVST symptoms, and the need for intubation significantly influenced survival outcomes. Understanding these sex differences in COVID-19-related CVST is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective management, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes. Our findings highlight the importance of considering sex as a factor in the evaluation and treatment of individuals with COVID-19 and concurrent CVST.

Abstract
Introduction Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become the worst catastrophe of the twenty-first century and has led to the death of more than 6.9 million individuals across the globe. Despite the growing knowledge of the clinicopathological features of COVID-19, the correlation between baseline and early changes in the laboratory parameters and the clinical outcomes of patients is not entirely understood. Methods Here, we conducted a time series cross-sectional study aimed at assessing different measured parameters and socio-demographic factors that are associated with disease severity and the outcome of the disease in 268 PCR-confirmed COVID-19 Patients. Results We found COVID-19 patients who died had a median age of 61 years (IQR, 50 y - 70 y), which is significantly higher (p < 0.05) compared to those who survived and had a median age of 54 years (IQR, 42y - 65y). The median RBC count of COVID-19 survivors was 4.9 × 106/μL (IQR 4.3 × 106/μL - 5.2 × 106/μL) which is higher (p < 0.05) compared to those who died 4.4 × 106/μL (3.82 × 106/μL - 5.02 × 106/μL). Similarly, COVID-19 survivors had significantly (p < 0.05) higher lymphocyte and monocyte percentages compared to those who died. One important result we found was that COVID-19 patients who presented with severe/critical cases at the time of first admission but managed to survive had a lower percentage of neutrophil, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, higher lymphocyte and monocyte percentages, and RBC count compared to those who died. Conclusion To conclude here, we showed that simple laboratory parameters can be used to predict severity and outcome in COVID-19 patients. As these parameters are simple, inexpensive, and radially available in most resource-limited countries, they can be extrapolated to future viral epidemics or pandemics to allocate resources to particular patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute kidney injury (AKI) in COVID-19 patients is associated with poor prognosis. Characterization of AKI by timing and trajectory and early prediction of AKI progression is required for better preventive management and the prediction of patient outcomes. METHODS A total of 858 patients who were hospitalized due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were retrospectively enrolled from December 2020 to August 2021. The occurrence of AKI was evaluated throughout hospitalization. The hazard ratios (HRs) of mortality outcomes according to the trajectory of AKI were measured using Cox regression models after adjustment for multiple variables. RESULTS Among 858 patients, 226 (26.3%) presented AKI at admission, and 44 (5.1%) developed AKI during hospitalization. Patients with AKI at admission or hospital-acquired AKI had a higher risk of mortality than those without AKI, with HRs of 9.87 (2.81-34.67) and 13.74 (3.57-52.84), respectively. Of 226 patients with AKI at admission, 104 (46.0%) recovered within 48 hr, 83 (36.7%) had AKI beyond 48 hr and recovered in 7 days, and 39 (17.3%) showed no recovery from AKI on Day 7. Delayed recovery and persistent AKI were significantly associated with an increased risk of mortality, with HRs of 4.39 (1.06-18.24) and 24.33 (7.10-83.36), respectively. CONCLUSIONS The onset and progression of AKI was significantly associated with in-hospital mortality in patients with COVID-19. A thorough observation of the recovery trajectory of early AKI after infection is necessary.

Abstract
Introduction Pulmonary symptoms are the most prominent manifestations of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms have been reported widely as well. Literature describing the relation of these symptoms with outcomes of COVID-19 patients is limited in terms of sample size, geographic diversity, and the spectrum of GI symptoms included. We aim to evaluate the association of GI symptoms with outcomes of hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies assessing GI symptoms and outcomes in COVID-19 patients were undertaken using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria and the Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) checklist. Details on outcomes included ICU vs. non-ICU admission, severe vs. non-severe disease, invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) vs. no-IMV use, oxygen saturation <90% vs. >90%, in-hospital mortality vs. discharged alive and survivors. We obtained the odds ratio (OR), 95% confidence interval (95%CI), and forest plots. Sensitivity analysis was used to analyze publication bias and heterogeneity. Results In 35 studies with 7931 confirmed COVID-19 patients, we found that anorexia (pooled OR:2.05; 95%CI: 1.36-3.09, p=0.0006) and abdominal pain (OR 2.80; 95%CI: 1.41-5.54, p=0.003) were associated with a higher risk of poor outcomes and no such association was found for diarrhea (OR 1.04; 95%CI: 0.85-1.26, p=0.71), nausea (OR 0.73; 95%CI: 0.38-1.39, p=0.34) and vomiting (OR 1.24; 95%CI 0.86-1.79, p=0.25). Conclusion The meta-analysis concludes that anorexia and abdominal pain are associated with poor outcomes in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, while diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting have no association. Future research should focus on whether detecting GI invasion in conjunction with fecal polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing can aid in the early triage of high-risk individuals and improve outcomes.

Abstract
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection induces a spectrum of clinical manifestations that depend on the immune response of the patient, i.e., from an asymptomatic form to an inflammatory response with multiorgan deterioration. In some cases, severe cases of SARS-CoV-2 are characterized by an excessive, persistent release of inflammatory mediators known as a cytokine storm. This phenomenon arises from an ineffective T helper (Th)-1 response, which is unable to control the infection and leads to a reinforcement of innate immunity, causing tissue damage. The evolution of the disease produced by SARS-CoV2, known as COVID-19, has been of interest in several research fields. Asthma patients have been reported to present highly variable outcomes due to the heterogeneity of the disease. For example, the Th2 response in patients with allergic asthma is capable of decreasing Th1 activation in COVID-19, preventing the onset of a cytokine storm; additionally, IL-33 released by damaged epithelium in the context of COVID-19 potentiates either Th1 or T2-high responses, a process that contributes to poor outcomes. IL-13, a T2-high inflammatory cytokine, decreases the expression of angiotensin converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) receptor, hindering SARS-CoV-2 entry; finally, poor outcomes have been observed in COVID-19 patients with severe neutrophilic asthma. In other contexts, the COVID-19 lockdown has had interesting effects on asthma epidemiology. The incidence of asthma in the most populated states in Mexico, including Tamaulipas, which has the highest asthma incidence in the country, showed similar tendencies independent of how strict the lockdown measures were in each state. As described worldwide for various diseases, a decrease in asthma cases was observed during the COVID-19 lockdown. This decrease was associated with a drop in acute respiratory infection cases. The drop in cases of various diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension or depression, observed in 2020 was restored in 2022, but not for asthma and acute respiratory infections. There were slight increases in asthma cases when in-person classes resumed. In conclusion, although many factors were involved in asthma outcomes during the pandemic, it seems that acute respiratory infection is intimately linked to asthma cases. Social distancing during remote learning, particularly school lockdown, appears to be an important cause of the decrease in cases.

Abstract
Background The COVID-19 epidemic control has become a global challenge and many contributing variables are still unknown to policymakers. This case-cohort study was conducted to investigate the risk factors of mortality in COVID-19 patients. Methods This case-cohort study was conducted on 956 samples in Ardakan and Meybod counties, Yazd Province, between February 20 and May 20, 2020. The data collection tool was a researcher-made questionnaire. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics and paired t-test, chi-square, and logistic regression analysis. Results Of a total cohort population of 993 in Ardakan and Meybod counties, 435 were assigned to the control group and 521 were assigned to the case group. The results of outcome analysis showed that 14.4% of the patients in the case group and 11.5% of the patients in the control group died. According to the results of logistic regression analysis in COVID-19 patients, each one-year increase in age increased the risk of mortality by 6% (HR = 1.06, p < 0.001), each one-day increase in the hospital stay increased the risk of death by 8% (HR = 1.08, p < 0.001). Moreover, the presence of cardiovascular disease, chronic neurological disease, and chronic pulmonary disease increased the risk of death. The patients who underwent mechanical ventilation had 85% less chance of survival (HR = 0.15, p < 0.001). Conclusions The results showed a higher mortality rate in the elderly patients as well as those with underlying diseases. Attention should be paid to at-risk and elderly patients in terms of ensuring a healthy diet, improving their self-care practices, and providing long-term medical and healthcare facilities.

Abstract
Though many studies on COVID have been published to date, data on COVID-19 epidemiology, symptoms, risk factors and severity in low- and middle-income countries (LMICS), such as Afghanistan are sparse. To describe clinical characteristics, severity, and outcomes of patients hospitalized in the MSF COVID-19 treatment center (CTC) in Herat, Afghanistan and to assess risk factors associated with severe outcomes. 1113 patients were included in this observational study between June 2020 and April 2022. Descriptive analysis was performed on clinical characteristics, complications, and outcomes of patients. Univariate description by Cox regression to identify risk factors for an adverse outcome was performed. Adverse outcome was defined as death or transfer to a level 3 intensive care located at another health facility. Finally, factors identified were included in a multivariate Cox survival analysis. A total of 165 patients (14.8%) suffered from a severe disease course, with a median time of 6 days (interquartile range: 2-11 days) from admission to adverse outcome. In our multivariate model, we identified male gender, age over 50, high O2 flow administered during admission, lymphopenia, anemia and O2 saturation < = 93% during the first three days of admission as predictors for a severe disease course (p<0.05). Our analysis concluded in a relatively low rate of adverse outcomes of 14.8%. This is possibly related to the fact that the resources at an MSF-led facility are higher, in terms of human resources as well as supply of drugs and biomedical equipment, including oxygen therapy devices, compared to local hospitals. Predictors for severe disease outcomes were found to be comparable to other settings.

Abstract
Risk of severe disease and death due to COVID-19 is increased in certain patient demographic groups, including those of advanced age, male sex, and obese body mass index. Investigations of the biological variations that contribute to this risk have been hampered by heterogeneous severity, with immunologic features of critical disease potentially obscuring differences between risk groups. To examine immune heterogeneity related to demographic risk factors, we enrolled 38 patients hospitalized with clinically homogeneous COVID-19 pneumonia - defined as oxygen saturation less than 94% on room air without respiratory failure, septic shock, or multiple organ dysfunction - and performed single-cell RNA-Seq of leukocytes collected at admission. Examination of individual risk factors identified strong shifts within neutrophil and monocyte/dendritic cell (Mo/DC) compartments, revealing altered immune cell type-specific responses in higher risk COVID-19 patient subgroups. Specifically, we found transcriptional evidence of altered neutrophil maturation in aged versus young patients and enhanced cytokine responses in Mo/DCs of male versus female patients. Such innate immune cell alterations may contribute to outcome differences linked to these risk factors. They also highlight the importance of diverse patient cohorts in studies of therapies targeting the immune response in COVID-19.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has resulted in a significant number of cases and deaths worldwide. Vaccination is the most effective preventive measure against the disease. This study aimed to assess the mortality rates of COVID-19 patients in the United States and the effectiveness of Pfizer (Pfizer, NY, USA), Moderna (Moderna, MA, USA), and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson, NJ, USA) vaccines in preventing mortality. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA-2020) guidelines. Eligible studies reporting on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines on patient outcomes were included. The search was performed in PubMed, Cochrane, and Google Scholar databases. The data were extracted, and risk ratios (RR) were calculated for mortality outcomes. The analysis was performed using Review Manager software, and bias assessments were conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Meta-Analysis tools. A total of seven studies with 21,618,297 COVID-19 patients were included in the meta-analysis. The odds ratio (OR) for mortality among unvaccinated patients compared to vaccinated patients was 2.46 (95% CI: 1.71-3.53), indicating that unvaccinated patients were 2.46 times more likely to die from COVID-19. The findings of this study support the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccination in reducing mortality among infected individuals. Unvaccinated patients had a significantly higher risk of mortality compared to vaccinated patients. Vaccination remains a crucial strategy to mitigate the severity of the disease and reduce mortality rates. Efforts should be made to address vaccine hesitancy and ensure widespread vaccine coverage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the impact of vaccination on severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and moreover on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia, by assessing the extent of lung disease using the CT severity score (CTSS). METHODS Between September 2021 and February 2022, SARS-CoV-2 positive patients who underwent chest CT were retrospectively enrolled. Anamnestic and clinical data, including vaccination status, were obtained. All CT scans were evaluated by two readers using the CTSS, based on a 25-point scale. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the associations between CTSS and clinical or demographic variables. An outcome analysis was used to differentiate clinical outcome between vaccinated and unvaccinated patients. RESULTS Of the 1040 patients (537 males, 503 females; median age 58 years), 678 (65.2%) were vaccinated and 362 (34.8%) unvaccinated. Vaccinated patients showed significantly lower CTSS compared to unvaccinated patients (p < 0.001), also when patients without lung involvement (CTSS = 0) were excluded (p < 0.001). Older age, male gender and lower number of doses administered were associated with higher CTSS, however, in the multivariate analysis, vaccination status resulted to be the variable with the strongest association with CTSS. Clinical outcomes were significantly worse in unvaccinated patients, including higher number of ICU admissions and higher mortality rates. CONCLUSIONS Lung involvement during COVID-19 was significantly less severe in vaccinated patients compared with unvaccinated patients, who also showed worse clinical outcomes. Vaccination status was the strongest variable associated to the severity of COVID-related, more than age, gender, and number of doses administered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pomegranate juice intake on the inflammatory status and complete blood count in hospitalized Covid-19 patients. METHODS This randomized, double-blinded placebo-controlled trial included 48 patients with two parallel arms. In addition to the standard care provided at the hospital, the patients consumed 500mL of whole pomegranate juice (PJ) daily or a placebo for 14 days. Inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)) and complete blood count were determined at baseline and after the 14 days of intervention. RESULTS At the end of the intervention, a significant decreased was observed in primary outcomes [mean difference (95%CI)] including IL-6 [5.24(0.87 to 9.61)], CRP [23.19(11.93 to 34.44)] and ESR [10.52(1.54 to 19.50)] in the PJ group vs. before the intervention. In addition, significant changes were also observed in the some of the secondary outcomes, including neutrophils, lymphocytes, platelets, platelets-to-lymphocyte(PLR) and neutrophils-to-lymphocyte (NLR) ratios (p<0.05) in the PJ group compared to before the intervention. At the end of the intervention period, the mean change of IL-6 [-7.09(-12.21 to -1.96)], white blood cells [-3.09(-6.14 to -0.05)], neutrophils [-9.12(-18.08 to -0.15)], lymphocyte [7.05(0.17 to 13.92)], platelets [-94.54(-139.33 to -49.75)], PLR [-15.99(-29.31 to -2.67)], blood oxygen saturation [1.75(0.13 to 3.37)] and MCV [0.31(-0.25 to 0.88)] levels were significantly different between groups while no difference was observed between the two groups in other blood indices. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that pomegranate juice intake might slightly improve the inflammatory status and CBC outcomes of COVID-19 patients and it may be beneficial. Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 virus has attracted a lot of attention globally due to the autoimmune and inflammatory processes that were observed during the development of Covid-19 disease. Excessive activation of immune response and triggering of autoantibodies synthesis as well as an excessive synthesis of inflammatory cytokines and the onset of cytokine storm has a vital role in the disease outcome and the occurring autoimmune complications. This scenario is reminiscent of infiltration of lymphocytes and monocytes in specific organs and the increased production of autoantibodies and chemoattractants noted in other inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The main goal of this study is to investigate the complex inflammatory processes that occur in Covid-19 disease and to find similarities with other inflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and Kawasaki syndrome to advance existing diagnostic and therapeutic protocols. The therapy with Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and the use of S1P receptor modulators showed promising results. However, there are many unknowns about these mechanisms and possible novel therapies. Therefore, the inflammation and autoimmunity triggered by Covid-19 should be further investigated to improve existing diagnostic procedures and therapeutic protocols for Covid-19.

Abstract
Long-lasting symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 infection have been described many times in the literature and are referred to as Long COVID. In this prospective, longitudinal, monocentric, observational study, we collected the health complaints of 474 patients (252 ambulatory and 222 hospitalized) at Lausanne University Hospital 1 year after COVID-19 diagnosis. Using a self-reported health survey, we explored cardiopulmonary, vascular, neurological, and psychological complaints. Our results show that age, Charlson comorbidity index, and smoking habits were associated with hospital admission. Regarding the vascular system, we found that having had thromboembolism before SARS-CoV-2 infection was significantly associated with a higher risk of recurrence of thromboembolism at 1 year. In the neurologic evaluation, the most frequent symptom was fatigue, which was observed in 87.5% of patients, followed by “feeling slowed down”, headache, and smell disturbance in 71.5%, 68.5%, and 60.7% of cases, respectively. Finally, our cohort subjects scored higher overall in the STAI, CESD, Maastricht, and PSQI scores (which measure anxiety, depression, fatigue, and sleep, respectively) than the healthy population. Using cluster analysis, we identified two phenotypes of patients prone to developing Long COVID. At baseline, CCS score, prior chronic disease, stroke, and atrial fibrillation were associated with Long COVID. During COVID infection, mechanical ventilation and five neurological complaints were also associated with Long COVID. In conclusion, this study confirms the wide range of symptoms developed after COVID with the involvement of all the major systems. Early identification of risk factors associated with the development of Long COVID could improve patient follow-up; nevertheless, the low specificity of these factors remains a challenge to building a systematic approach.

Abstract
Background Indonesia had the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths in South-East Asia. We aimed to determine the factors associated with this mortality and the effect of the recommended COVID-19 treatment regimen during the first 10 months of the epidemic. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study using secondary data from medical records. In total, 689 adult COVID-19 inpatients hospitalized between March and December 2020 were enrolled. Clinical characteristics, laboratory parameters, and treatments were analyzed by survival outcome. Kaplan-Meier statistics were used to estimate survival. Findings Of the 689 patients enrolled, 103 (14.9%) died. Disease severity was highly associated with mortality (hazard ratio [HR]: 7.69, p < 0.001). Other clinical factors associated with mortality were older age and comorbidities. Based on laboratory parameters, higher procalcitonin and C-reactive protein contents and a neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio >3.53 were also linked to mortality. Favipiravir was associated with lower mortality, with adjusted HRs of 0.24 (0.11-0.54) and 0.40 (0.17-0.98) among the mild/moderate and severe cases, respectively. Among patients with severe disease, steroids showed some beneficial effects in the early days of hospitalization. Interpretation Older age and comorbidities were associated with disease severity and, consequently, higher mortality. Higher mortality after the second week of hospitalization may be related to secondary bacterial infection. Favipiravir showed significant benefit for COVID-19 survival, while steroids showed benefit only in the early days of admission among patients with severe disease. Abstract
Since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, Brazil has become one of the countries most affected by this disease. A year into the pandemic, a second wave of COVID-19 emerged, with a rapid spread of a new SARS-CoV-2 lineage of concern. Several vaccines have been granted emergency-use authorization, leading to a decrease in mortality and severe cases in many countries. However, the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants raises the alert for potential new waves of transmission and an increase in pathogenicity. We compared the demographic and clinical data of critically ill patients infected with COVID-19 hospitalized in Rio de Janeiro during the first and second waves between July 2020 and October 2021. In total, 106 participants were included in this study; among them, 88% had at least one comorbidity, and 37% developed severe disease. Disease severity was associated with older age, pre-existing neurological comorbidities, higher viral load, and dyspnea. Laboratory biomarkers related to white blood cells, coagulation, cellular injury, inflammation, renal, and liver injuries were significantly associated with severe COVID-19. During the second wave of the pandemic, the necessity of invasive respiratory support was higher, and more individuals with COVID-19 developed acute hepatitis, suggesting that the progression of the second wave resulted in an increase in severe cases. These results can contribute to understanding the behavior of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil and may be helpful in predicting disease severity, which is a pivotal for guiding clinical care, improving patient outcomes, and defining public policies.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has put a hold on the Silent Mentor Programme (SMP); this pause has not only caused unprecedented challenges for the delivery of medical education but has forced changes in the programme ceremony sessions. We aimed to describe the psychological impact and experiences of family members of silent mentors during the COVID-19 pandemic using qualitative interviews. Many expressed feelings of remorse and unrest about the unprecedented delay of the SMP. The delay increased negative emotions particularly among some elderly family members; however, there was no prominent negative effect on their functional health and well-being. Several participants relayed the belief that the soul cannot rest until the body receives a proper burial while some worried about the deterioration of the physical condition of the mentors. In conclusion, findings provide insights into the importance of not overlooking the mental health implications of delaying the SMP in future outbreaks or crises.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since Shiraz Transplant Center is one of the major transplant centers in Iran and the Middle East, this study was conducted to evaluate outcomes of the applied policies on COVID-19 detection and management. METHODS During 4 months from March to June 2020, patient's data diagnosed with the impression of COVID-19 were extracted and evaluated based on demographic and clinical features, along with the length of hospital stay and expenses. RESULTS Our data demonstrated that a total of 190 individuals, with a median age of 58, were diagnosed with COVID-19 during the mentioned period. Among these, 21 patients had a positive PCR test and 56 patients had clinical symptoms in favor of COVID-19. Also, 113 (59%) patients were classified as mild based on clinical evidence and were treated on an outpatient basis. Furthermore, 81 out of 450 cases (18%) of the healthcare workers at our center had either PCR of clinical features in favor of COVID-19. The mortality rate of our study was 11% and diabetes mellitus, hypertension were considered risk factors for obtaining COVID-19 infection. The direct cost of treatment and management of patients with COVID-19 amounted to 2,067,730,919 IRR, which considering the 77 patients admitted to Gary Zone per capita direct cost of treatment each patient was 26,853,648 IRR. CONCLUSION We demonstrated that the COVID-19 pandemic had a noticeable influence on our transplant center in aspects of delaying surgery and increased hospital costs and burden. However, by implanting proper protocols, we were able to was able to provide early detection for COVID-19 and apply necessary treatment and prevention protocols to safeguard the patients under its coverage, especially immunocompromised patients.

Abstract
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection could present in a clinical spectrum of varying severity. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) is a crucial component of the viral antigen presentation pathway and immune response to the virus. Therefore, we aimed to assess the impact of HLA allele polymorphisms on the susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection and related mortality in Turkish kidney transplant recipients and wait listed patients, along with clinical characteristics of the patients. We analysed data from 401 patients with clinical characteristics according to presence (n = 114, COVID+) or absence of SARS-CoV-2 infection (n = 287, COVID-) who had previously been HLA typed to support transplantation. The incidence of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) was 28 %, and the mortality rate was 19 % in our wait listed/ transplanted patients. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that a significant HLA association between HLA- B*49 (OR = 2.57, 95 % CI, 1.13-5.82; p = 0.02) and HLA- DRB1*14 (OR = 2.48, 95 % CI, 1.18-5.20; p = 0.01) with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Besides, in COVID + patients, HLA-C*03 was correlated to mortality (OR = 8.31, 95 % CI, 1.26-54.82; P = 0.03). The new finding from our analysis suggests that HLA polymorphisms could be associated with the occurrence of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 mortality in Turkish patients with renal replacement therapy. This study may provide new information for the clinician to identify and manage sub-populations at risk in the setting of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
The primary target of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is the respiratory system including the nose and lungs, however, it can also damage the kidneys, cardiovascular system and gastrointestinal system. Many recent reports suggested that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infections can also affect the central nervous system as well as peripheral nervous system that lead to the several neurological complications. The virus can break the blood brain barrier and enters the brain via haematological route or directly by the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptors present on endothelial cells of many cerebral tissues. The neurological complications are manifested by headache, dizziness, encephalopathy, encephalitis, cerebrovascular disease, anosmia, hypogeusia, muscle damage, etc. This review article described the possible routes and mechanism of nervous system infection and the range of neurological complications of COVID-19 that may help the medical practitioners and researchers to improve the clinical treatment and reduce the mortality rate among patients with viral diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both vaccination and physical activity have been shown to independently decrease the likelihood of severe COVID-19 infection. OBJECTIVE To assess the association between regular physical activity and vaccination against COVID-19 among healthcare workers. METHODS A test negative case-control study design was used to estimate the risk of having an associated COVID-19-related hospital admission, among individuals who were unvaccinated compared with those who were fully vaccinated with Ad26.COV2.S (>28 days after a single dose). 196 444 participant tests were stratified into three measured physical activity subgroups with low, moderate and high activity, to test the hypothesis that physical activity is an effect modifier on the relationship between vaccination and hospitalisation. RESULTS Vaccine effectiveness against a COVID-19-related admission among vaccinated individuals within the low activity group was 60.0% (95% CI 39.0 to 73.8), 72.1% (95% CI 55.2 to 82.6) for the moderate activity group, and 85.8% (95% CI 74.1 to 92.2) for the high activity group. Compared with individuals with low activity levels, vaccinated individuals with moderate and high activity levels had a 1.4 (95% CI 1.36 to 1.51) and 2.8 (95% CI 2.35 to 3.35) times lower risk of COVID-19 admission, respectively (p value <0.001 for both groups). CONCLUSIONS Regular physical activity was associated with improved vaccine effectiveness against COVID-19 hospitalisation, with higher levels of physical activity associated with greater vaccine effectiveness. Physical activity enhances vaccine effectiveness against severe COVID-19 outcomes and should be encouraged by greater public health messaging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Data on severe acute respiratory distress syndrome coronavirus 2 monoclonal antibody (SARS-CoV-2-specific mAb) use in hematologic malignancy and hematopoietic cell transplantation (HM/HCT) patients are limited. Here, we describe our experience with the use of casirivimab-imdevimab or bamlanivimab for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in HM/HCT patients. METHODS This was a retrospective chart review at the University of Miami Hospital and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center for HM/HCT patients with COVID-19 who received casirivimab-imdevimab or bamlanivimab from November 21, 2020, to September 30, 2021. Outcomes measured were mortality, hospital admission, and infusion reaction to SARS-CoV-2-specific mAbs. RESULTS We identified 59 HM/HCT patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 who received casirivimab-imdevimab or bamlanivimab. Median age was 57 years (interquartile range [IQR]: 45-65). Among the 59 patients, 25 (42%) received cellular therapy: 14 (24%) had undergone allogeneic HCT, nine (15%) autologous HCT, and two (3%) received chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy. The median time from COVID-19 symptom onset to SARS-CoV-2-specific mAb administration was 4 (IQR: 3-6) days. Forty-six (78%) patients received SARS-CoV-2-specific mAbs as outpatients and 13 (22%) patients received SARS-CoV-2-specific mAbs during hospitalization. Among patients who received SARS-CoV-2-specific mAbs as outpatients, only four (9%) visited the emergency department at days 10, 11, 15, and 35 after SARS-CoV-2-specific mAb administration. None of these four patients required hospital admission. Among the hospitalized patients, five (38%) were admitted to the hospital with neutropenic fever, four (31%) were already hospitalized for transplantation and cellular therapy, three (23%) were admitted for monitoring of COVID-19 symptoms, and one (8%) was admitted with acute kidney injury. Three hospitalized patients (23%) died at 14, 35, and 59 days after SARS-CoV-2-specific mAb administration; two of these three deaths were attributed to COVID-19 infection. One patient developed an immediate infusion reaction to bamlanivimab, and no infusion reactions were reported to casirivimab-imdevimab use. CONCLUSION During the alpha and delta variant surges, early administration of bamlanivimab or casirivimab-imdevimab prevented hospitalization and death when given in the outpatient setting. Among patients who received mAbs at or after hospital admission, the risk of COVID-19 disease progression and death remains significant. Larger studies of the use of mAb therapy to treat COVID-19 in this population are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The worldwide pandemic SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with clinical course including a very broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, including death. Several studies and meta-analyses have evaluated the role of hypertension on prognosis, but with important limitations and conflicting results. Therefore, we decided to perform a new meta-analysis of the observational studies that explored the relationship between pre-existing hypertension and mortality risk in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, using more stringent inclusion criteria to overcome the limitations inherent previous meta-analyses. METHODS A systematic search of the on-line databases available up to 31 March 2022 was conducted, including peer-reviewed original articles, involving the adult population, where the role of hypertension on mortality due to SARS-CoV-2 infection was determined by Cox-proportional hazard models. Pooled hazard ratio (HR) was calculated by a random effect model. Sensitivity, heterogeneity, publication bias, subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed. RESULTS Twenty-six studies (222,083 participants) met the pre-defined inclusion criteria. In the pooled analysis, pre-existing hypertension was significantly associated with mortality due to SARS-CoV-2 infection, both in unadjusted and adjusted models (HR: 1.55; 95% CI: 1.22 to 1.97). However, in separate analyses including results adjusted for crucial and strong predictors of mortality during SARS-CoV-2 infection (e.g. body weight), the association disappeared. CONCLUSIONS The results of this meta-analysis indicate that pre-existing hypertension is not an independent predictor of mortality during SARS-CoV-2 infection. Further studies should nevertheless be carried out worldwide to evaluate this role, independent of, or in interaction with, other confounders that may affect the mortality risk.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has detrimental multi-system consequences. Symptoms may appear during the acute phase of infection, but the literature on long-term recovery of young adults after mild to moderate infection is lacking. Heart rate variability (HRV) allows for the observation of autonomic nervous system (ANS) modulation post-SARS-CoV-2 infection. Since physical activity (PA) can help improve ANS modulation, investigating factors that can influence HRV outcomes after COVID-19 is essential to advancements in care and intervention strategies. Clinicians may use this research to aid in the development of non-medication interventions. At baseline, 18 control (CT) and 20 post-COVID-19 (PCOV) participants were observed where general anamnesis was performed, followed by HRV and PA assessment. Thus, 10 CT and 7 PCOV subjects returned for follow-up (FU) evaluation 6 weeks after complete immunization (two doses) and assessments were repeated. Over the follow-up period, a decrease in sympathetic (SNS) activity (mean heart rate: p = 0.0024, CI = -24.67--3.26; SNS index: p = 0.0068, CI = -2.50--0.32) and increase in parasympathetic (PNS) activity (mean RR: p = 0.0097, CI = 33.72-225.51; PNS index: p = 0.0091, CI = -0.20-1.47) were observed. At follow-up, HRV was not different between groups (p > 0.05). Additionally, no differences were observed in PA between moments and groups. This study provides evidence of ANS recovery after SARS-CoV-2 insult in young adults over a follow-up period, independent of changes in PA.

Congruence of radiological scoring systems used in COVID-19 pneumonia and effect of comorbid diseases on radiological features. JOURNAL OF SURGERY AND MEDICINE 2023. Abstract
Background/Aim: Several scoring systems have been developed to standardize radiological findings in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. The most commonly used scoring systems in the radiological examination of COVID-19 are those of the North American Radiology Association (RSNA), British Thoracic Society (BTS), and COVID-19 Reporting and Data System (CO-RADS). However, the compatibility between these radiological scoring systems has not been evaluated before. Therefore, this study evaluated the radiological features of COVID-19 pneumonia and congruence between radiological scoring systems and determined the effect of comorbidities and demographic characteristics on radiological features and thoracic computed tomography (TCT) findings in the context of COVID-19.
Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed on patients attending our unit with a suspicion of COVID-19 who also had a positive real-time transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test. All TCT images were subjected to the RSNA, BTS, and CO-RADS scoring systems. Demographic data such as age and gender, and comorbid conditions were recorded.
Results: TCT showed peripheral, posterior, and bilateral involvement in 97.7%, 97.7%, and 87.6% of the patients, respectively. The most common TCT finding was ground glass appearance, which was found in 95.5% of the patients. The Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) score was found to have an impact on RSNA and BTS criteria (P=0.011 and P=0.014), while age, gender, and the presence of comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes mellitus (DM), and chronic pulmonary disease (CPD) did not have such an effect (P>0.05 for all). On the other hand, CCI scores and the presence of CPD had an association with CO-RADS, but there was no effect of age, gender, DM, and CVD (P=0.915 and P=0.730).
Conclusion: TCT plays an important role in early management, isolation, and follow-up of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. The radiological scoring systems were found to exhibit good compatibility, but comorbid conditions could have an impact on the assessment. Therefore, we conclude that these radiological assessment criteria are useful in the management and monitoring of such patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence over time and risk factors among pregnant women at delivery in São Paulo, Brazil; and to evaluate the suitability of pregnant women as a sentinel population for SARS-CoV-2 serosurveillance. METHODS Unselected consecutive pregnant women presenting at the labor ward of a single large hospital between July 20th 2020 to February 21st 2021 were enrolled and tested for SARS-CoV-2 serology using two assays: the rapid chromatic Wondfo One Step (for total IgA and IgG detection) and Roche Elecsys assay (detecting anti-nucleoprotein [N] IgG). SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence was computed as smooth spline function over time with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Risk factors were evaluated for positivity by each assay. We compared timepoint seroprevalence by the two assays with four concomitant community household surveys (HHS), in which the Roche assay was used, to determine the sensitivity and relevance of the pregnant women population as sentinel population. RESULTS Overall SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence was 28.9% (221/763) by Roche and 17.9% (137/763) by Wondfo. Reported symptoms experienced during pregnancy were all significantly correlated with being SARS-CoV-2 seropositive at delivery with any assay (with odds-ratios ranging from 3.0 [95% CI: 2.1-4.3] for coryza to 22.8 [95% CI: 12.3-46.6] for ageusia). Seropositivity by either assay was high in women at delivery in the early period of the pandemic (June 2020), compared with seropositivity in women from the concomitant HHS: 44.1% (95% CI: 21.8-66.4) for Roche, 54.1% (30.9-78.5) for Wondfo, versus 11.4% (95% CI: 9.2-13.6) for HHS. For later periods (October 2020 and January 2021), the seropositivity in women at delivery measured by Roche corresponded well with the prevalence found among women in the HHS using the same assay, whilst prevalence measured by Wondfo dropped. CONCLUSIONS Women at delivery represent a highly exposed and readily accessible population for sentinel surveillance of emerging infections such as SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
Background The severity of coronavirus (COVID-19) in patients with chronic comorbidities is much higher than in other patients, which can lead to their death. Machine learning (ML) algorithms as a potential solution for rapid and early clinical evaluation of the severity of the disease can help in allocating and prioritizing resources to reduce mortality. Objective The objective of this study was to predict the mortality risk and length of stay (LoS) of patients with COVID-19 and history of chronic comorbidities using ML algorithms. Methods This retrospective study was conducted by reviewing the medical records of COVID-19 patients with a history of chronic comorbidities from March 2020 to January 2021 in Afzalipour Hospital in Kerman, Iran. The outcome of patients, hospitalization was recorded as discharge or death. The filtering technique used to score the features and well-known ML algorithms were applied to predict the risk of mortality and LoS of patients. Ensemble Learning methods is also used. To evaluate the performance of the models, different measures including F1, precision, recall, and accuracy were calculated. The TRIPOD guideline assessed transparent reporting. Results This study was performed on 1291 patients, including 900 alive and 391 dead patients. Shortness of breath (53.6%), fever (30.1%), and cough (25.3%) were the three most common symptoms in patients. Diabetes mellitus(DM) (31.3%), hypertension (HTN) (27.3%), and ischemic heart disease (IHD) (14.2%) were the three most common chronic comorbidities of patients. Twenty-six important factors were extracted from each patient's record. Gradient boosting model with 84.15% accuracy was the best model for predicting mortality risk and multilayer perceptron (MLP) with rectified linear unit function (MSE = 38.96) was the best model for predicting the LoS. The most common chronic comorbidities among these patients were DM (31.3%), HTN (27.3%), and IHD (14.2%). The most important factors in predicting the risk of mortality were hyperlipidemia, diabetes, asthma, and cancer, and in predicting LoS was shortness of breath. Conclusion The results of this study showed that the use of ML algorithms can be a good tool to predict the risk of mortality and LoS of patients with COVID-19 and chronic comorbidities based on physiological conditions, symptoms, and demographic information of patients. The Gradient boosting and MLP algorithms can quickly identify patients at risk of death or long-term hospitalization and notify physicians to do appropriate interventions.
