Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Predictors of outcomes are needed in order to improve the clinical management of patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN). The present study evaluated whether cardiac dysfunction might be associated with different longitudinal outcomes of AN. METHODS AND RESULTS A sample of 35 patients with AN (11 restricting, 24 binge-purging- age range 16-28 years old) and 42 healthy controls (18-29 years old) were evaluated in terms of psychometric variables, Body Mass Index (BMI), body composition (by bioimpedance analysis, namely: Fat-Free Mass - FFM, Fat Mass - FM, Body Cell Mass - BCM, Phase Angle - PhA) and cardiac functioning (left ventricular ejection fraction - LVEF; global longitudinal strain - LVGLS). FM was significantly and negatively associated with eating psychopathology (weight and shape concerns, b -0.523, p 0.029; and shape concerns b -0.578, p0.015), while cardiac dysfunction (LVGLS > -18%) was positively associated with dietary restraints (b 1.253, p 0.043). LVEF, in turn, was positively associated with BCM (b 0.721, p 0.008) and FFM (b 0.779, p 0.039). Cardiac dysfunction negatively impacted the effect of nutritional rehabilitation, as those patients reporting reduced LVGLS showed lower FFM (b -4.410, p 0.011), FM (b -1.495, p 0.003) and BCM (b -2.205, p 0.015) at follow-up after three months. CONCLUSION These preliminary results showed that cardiac functioning might represent an early predictor of cachexia and chronicity, while body composition seems to be a more accurate measure for evaluating the recovery process of patients with AN.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chewing betel quid (BQ) - a preparation commonly containing areca nut and slaked lime wrapped in betel leaf - is entrenched in South Asia. Although BQ consumption during pregnancy has been linked to adverse birth outcomes, its effect on postnatal growth remains largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE We examined the associations of BQ use during pregnancy with children's height-for-age and body mass index-for-age z-scores (HAZ and BAZ, respectively) and fat and fat-free mass along with sex-based differences in association in rural Bangladesh. METHODS With a prospective cohort design, we assessed BQ use among mothers enrolled in the Preterm and Stillbirth Study, Matlab (n = 3140) with a structured questionnaire around early third trimester. Children born to a subset of 614 women (including 134 daily users) were invited to follow-up between October 2021 and January 2022. HAZ and BAZ were calculated from anthropometric assessment, and fat and fat-free mass were estimated using bioelectric impedance. Overall and sex-specific multiple linear regression models were fitted. RESULTS Growth data were available for 501 children (mean age 4.9 years): 43.3% of them were born to non-users, 35.3% to those using prior to or less-than-daily during the survey, and 21.3% to daily users. No statistically significant associations were observed after adjusting for sex, parity, maternal height and education, and household wealth. CONCLUSIONS There was no effect of BQ use during pregnancy on postnatal growth in this study. Longitudinal studies following up those born to heavy users beyond childhood are warranted for capturing long-term implications of prenatal BQ exposure.

Abstract
Introduction Obesity is a growing public health issue, especially among young adults, with long-term management strategies still under debate. This prospective study compares the effects of caloric restriction and isocaloric diets with different macronutrient distributions on body composition and anthropometric parameters in obese women during a 12-week weight loss program, aiming to identify the most effective dietary strategies for managing obesity-related health outcomes. Methods A certified clinical nutritionist assigned specific diets over a 12-week period to 150 participants, distributed as follows: hypocaloric diets-low-energy diet (LED, 31 subjects) and very low-energy diet (VLED, 13 subjects); isocaloric diets with macronutrient distribution-low-carbohydrate diet (LCD, 48 subjects), ketogenic diet (KD, 23 subjects), and high-protein diet (HPD, 24 subjects); and isocaloric diet without macronutrient distribution-time-restricted eating (TRE, 11 subjects). Participants were dynamically monitored using anthropometric parameters: body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist to hip ratio (WHR) and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) using the TANITA Body Composition Analyzer BC-418 MA III (T5896, Tokyo, Japan) at three key intervals-baseline, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks. The following parameters were evaluated: body weight, basal metabolic rate (BMR), percentage of total body fat, trunk fat, muscle mass, fat-free mass, and hydration status. Results All diets led to weight loss, but differences emerged over time. The TRE model resulted in significantly less weight loss compared to LED at the final follow-up (6.30 kg, p < 0.001), similar to the VLED (4.69 kg, p < 0.001). Isocaloric diets with varied macronutrient distributions showed significant weight loss compared to LED (p < 0.001). The KD reduced waist circumference at both 6 and 12 weeks (-4.08 cm, p < 0.001), while significant differences in waist-to-hip ratio reduction were observed across diet groups at 12 weeks (p = 0.01). Post-hoc analysis revealed significant fat mass differences at 12 weeks, with HPD outperforming IF (p = 0.01) and VLED (p = 0.003). LCD reduced trunk fat at 6 weeks (-2.36%, p = 0.001) and 12 weeks (-3.79%, p < 0.001). HPD increased muscle mass at 12 weeks (2.95%, p = 0.001), while VLED decreased it (-2.02%, p = 0.031). TRE showed a smaller BMR reduction at 12 weeks compared to LED. Conclusion This study highlights the superior long-term benefits of isocaloric diets with macronutrients distribution over calorie-restrictive diets in optimizing weight, BMI, body composition, and central adiposity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a lack of investigation into the dynamics of blood lipids before, during, and after diurnal fasting, especially in inactive men. OBJECTIVE This study determined dynamic changes in blood lipids in inactive men before, during, and after they underwent diurnal fasting. METHODS A total of 44 young men aged a mean 27.6 (SD 5.8) years were recruited to evaluate their habitual physical activity and diet using a questionnaire developed for this study. Body composition was evaluated using a bioelectrical impedance analysis machine (Tanita BC-980). An 8-ml blood sample was collected to evaluate blood lipids and glucose. All measurements were taken 2-3 days before Ramadan, during Ramadan (at week 2 and week 3), and 1 month after Ramadan. A 1-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to compare the measured variables before, during, and after the month of Ramadan. When a significant difference was found, post hoc testing was used. Differences were considered significant at P<.05. RESULTS There was a significant reduction in low-density lipoprotein during Ramadan compared to before and after Ramadan (83.49 mg/dl at week 3 vs 93.11 mg/dl before Ramadan [P=.02] and 101.59 mg/dl after Ramadan [P=.007]). There were significant elevations in fasting blood glucose (74.60 mmol/L before Ramadan vs 81.52 mmol/L at week 3 [P=.03] and 86.51 mmol/L after Ramadan [P=.01]) and blood pressure (109 mm Hg before Ramadan vs 114 mm Hg after Ramadan; P=.02) reported during and even after the month of Ramadan, although both fasting blood glucose and blood pressure were within normal levels. CONCLUSIONS Ramadan fasting could be an independent factor in reducing low-density lipoprotein. Further investigations are encouraged to clarify the impact of diurnal fasting on blood lipids in people with special conditions.

Abstract
Background: Obesity remains a widely debated issue, often criticized for the limitations in its identification and classification. This study aims to compare two distinct systems for classifying obesity: body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage (BFP) as assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). By examining these measures, the study seeks to clarify how different metrics of body composition influence the identification of obesity-related risk factors. Methods: The study enrolled 1255 adults, comprising 471 males and 784 females, with a mean age of 36 ± 12 years. Participants exhibited varying degrees of weight status, including optimal weight, overweight, and obesity. Body composition analysis was conducted using the TANITA Body Composition Analyzer BC-418 MA III device (T5896, Tokyo, Japan), evaluating the following parameters: current weight, basal metabolic rate (BMR), adipose tissue (%), muscle mass (%), and hydration status (%). Results: Age and psychological factors like cravings, fatigue, stress, and compulsive eating were significant predictors of obesity in the BMI model but not in the BFP model. Additionally, having a family history of diabetes was protective in the BMI model (OR: 0.33, 0.11-0.87) but increased risk in the BFP model (OR: 1.66, 1.01-2.76). The BMI model demonstrates exceptional predictive ability (AUC = 0.998). In contrast, the BFP model, while still performing well, exhibits a lower AUC (0.975), indicating slightly reduced discriminative power compared to the BMI model. Conclusions: BMI classification demonstrates superior predictive accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity. This suggests that BMI remains a more reliable measure for identifying obesity-related risk factors compared to the BFP model.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review aims to discuss strengths and limitations of body mass index (BMI) in diagnosing obesity, the use of alternative anthropometric measurements, and potential new technology that may change the future of obesity diagnosis and management. RECENT FINDINGS The diagnosis of obesity requires the anthropometric assessment of adiposity. In clinical settings, this should include BMI with confirmation that elevated BMI represents excess adiposity and a measure of fat distribution (i.e., waist circumference (WC), waist to height ratio (WHtR), or WC divided by height0.5 (WHR.5R). Digital anthropometry and bioelectric impedance (BIA) can estimate fat distribution and be feasibly employed in the clinic. In addition, the diagnosis should include a clinical component assessing the presence and severity of weight-related complications. As anthropometric measures used in the diagnosis of obesity, BMI is generally sufficient if confirmed to represent excess adiposity, and there are advantages to the use of WHtR over WC to assess fat distribution. BIA and digital anthropometry have the potential to provide accurate measures of fat mass and distribution in clinical settings. There should also be a clinical evaluation for the presence and severity of obesity complications that can be used to stage the disease.

Abstract
The electrical conductivity of blood is a crucial physiological parameter with diverse applications in medical diagnostics. Here, a novel approach utilizing a portable millifluidic nanogenerator lab-on-a-chip device for measuring blood conductivity at low frequencies, is introduced. The proposed device employs blood as a conductive substance within its built-in triboelectric nanogenerator system. The voltage generated by this blood-based nanogenerator device is analyzed to determine the electrical conductivity of the blood sample. The self-powering functionality of the device eliminates the need for complex embedded electronics and external electrodes. Experimental results using simulated body fluid and human blood plasma demonstrate the device's efficacy in detecting variations in conductivity related to changes in electrolyte concentrations. Furthermore, artificial intelligence models are used to analyze the generated voltage patterns and to estimate the blood electrical conductivity. The models exhibit high accuracy in predicting conductivity based solely on the device-generated voltage. The 3D-printed, disposable design of the device enhances portability and usability, providing a point-of-care solution for rapid blood conductivity assessment. A comparative analysis with traditional conductivity measurement methods highlights the advantages of the proposed device in terms of simplicity, portability, and adaptability for various applications beyond blood analysis.

Abstract
Background and objective Neurocritical patients often experience uncontrolled high catabolic metabolism state during the acuta phase of the disease. The complex interactions of neuroendocrine, inflammation, and immune system lead to massive protein breakdown and changes in body composition. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) evaluates the content and proportions of body components based on the principles of bioelectricity. Its parameters reflect the overall health status of the body and the integrity of cellular structure and function, playing an important role in assessing the disease status and predicting prognosis of such patients. This study explored the association of BIA parameters trajectories with clinical outcomes in neurocritical patients. Methods This study prospectively collected BIA parameters of 127 neurocritical patients in the Department of Neurology admitted to the NICU for the first 1-7 days. All these patients were adults (≥18 years old) experiencing their first onset of illness and were in the acute phase of the disease. The group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM), which aims to identify individuals following similar developmental trajectories, was used to identify potential subgroups of individuals based on BIA parameters. The short-term prognosis of patients in each trajectory group with variations in phase angle (PA) and extracellular water/total body water (ECW/TBW) over time was differentially analyzed, and the logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between potential trajectory groups of PA and ECW/TBW and the short-term prognosis of neurocritical patients. The outcome was Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) score at discharge. Results Four PA trajectories and four ECW/TBW trajectories were detected respectively in neurocritical patients. Among them, compared with the other latent subgroups, the "Low PA rapidly decreasing subgroup" and the "High ECW/TBW slowly rising subgroup" had higher incidences of adverse outcomes at discharge (GOS:1-3), in-hospital mortality, and length of neurology intensive care unit stay (all P < 0.05). After correcting for potential confounders, compared with the "Low PA rapidly decreasing subgroup", the risk of adverse outcome (GOS:1-3) was lower in the other three PA trajectories, with OR values of 0.0003, 0.0004, and 0.003 respectively (all P < 0.05). Compared with the "High ECW/TBW slowly rising subgroup", the risk of adverse outcome (GOS:1-3) was lower in the other three ECW/TBW trajectories, with OR values of 0.013, 0.035 and 0.038 respectively (all P < 0.05). Conclusion Latent PA trajectories and latent ECW/TBW trajectories during 1-7 days after admission were associated with the clinical outcomes of neurocritical patients. The risk of adverse outcomes was highest in the "Low PA rapidly decreasing subgroup" and the "High ECW/TBW slowly rising subgroup". These results reflected the overall health status and nutritional condition of neurocritical patients at the onset of the disease, and demonstrated the dynamic change process in body composition caused by the inflammatory response during the acute phase of the disease. This provided a reference basis for the observation and prognostic evaluation of such patients.

Abstract
Sex chromosome aneuploidies (SCAs) are collectively common conditions caused by carriage of a sex chromosome dosage other than XX for females and XY for males. Increases in sex chromosome dosage (SCD) have been shown to have an inverted-U association with height, but we lack combined studies of SCA effects on height and weight, and it is not known if any such effects vary with age. Here, we study norm-derived height and weight z-scores in 177 youth spanning 8 SCA karyotypes (XXX, XXY, XYY, XXXX, XXXY, XXYY, XXXXX, and XXXXY). We replicate a previously described inverted-U association between mounting SCD and height, and further show that there is also a muted version of this effect for weight: both phenotypes are elevated until SCD reaches 4 for females and 5 for males but decrease thereafter. We next use 266 longitudinal measures available from a subset of karyotypes (XXX, XXY, XYY, and XXYY) to show that mean height in these SCAs diverges further from norms with increasing age. As weight does not diverge from norms with increasing age, BMI decreases with increasing age. These findings extend our understanding of growth as an important clinical outcome in SCA, and as a key context for known effects of SCA on diverse organ systems that scale with body size.

Abstract
Sarcopenia prevalence depends on the definition, and ethnicity must be considered when setting reference values. However, there is no specific cut-off for sarcopenia in Saudi women. Accordingly, we aimed to establish a cut-off value for sarcopenia in Saudi women. We determined the prevalence of sarcopenia in terms of low handgrip strength (HGS) in postmenopausal women using the EWGSOP2 value, redefined a specific cut-off for low HGS derived from Saudi premenopausal women, re-determined the prevalence of low HGS using the new cut-off, and analyzed the proportion of low HGS in women with obesity compared to those without obesity. Following EWGSOP2 guidelines, we defined probable sarcopenia and set new HGS values. We assessed HGS and body composition in 134 pre/postmenopausal women. Probable sarcopenia prevalence was calculated using EWGSOP2's HGS of 16 kg and new cut-offs from young premenopausal women without obesity. HGS 10 and 8 kg cut-offs were calculated from premenopausal Saudi women's mean -2 SDs and mean -2.5 SDs. Using the HGS 16 kg cut-off, sarcopenia prevalence was 44% in postmenopausal and 33.89% in premenopausal women. Applying the new HGS 10 kg and 8 kg cut-offs, the prevalence was 9.33% and 4%, respectively, in postmenopausal and 5% and 3.40%, respectively, in premenopausal women. Women with obesity had a higher proportion of low HGS across all cut-offs. We suggest that EWGSOP2 cut-offs may not be adaptable for Saudi women. Considering body composition differences between Saudis and Caucasians, our proposed HGS cut-offs appear more relevant.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and obesity represent a public health problem worldwide. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a practical and effective way of evaluating body composition, especially abdominal fat. Liraglutide, a GLP-1 analog, reduces body weight and improves cardiometabolic parameters. In this prospective non-randomized intervention study, we evaluated the effect of 6 months of treatment with liraglutide (n = 57) on the clinical, laboratory and BIA findings of adult sex-stratified patients diagnosed with obesity and MetS, compared to a control group receiving sibutramine (n = 46). The groups were statistically similar with regard to the age of females (p = 0.852) and males (p = 0.657). Almost all anthropometric and BIA variables were higher in the treatment group than in the comparative group (p < 0.05). Abdominal circumference (AC) decreased significantly more in the treatment group. In males, body weight and fat mass also decreased (p < 0.05). Liraglutide treatment was associated with a greater reduction in trunk fat mass (FMT) (p < 0.05). AC and FMT were strongly correlated (rho = 0.531, p < 0.001) in the treatment group. In the multiple regression analysis, liraglutide treatment remained independently associated with FMT. Treatment with liraglutide for 6 months promoted weight loss, improved cardiometabolic and inflammatory parameters and led to a significant reduction in FMT correlated with AC in obese MetS patients of both sexes.

Abstract
(1) Background: Within the last 30 years, growing rates of child overweight and obesity have been observed as a very concerning phenomenon in most countries worldwide. The research aim was to assess what effect increased physical activity has on reducing body mass and adipose tissue in children between 10 and 11 years of age as well as to answer the question of whether physical activity could be considered as a factor in preventing child overweight and obesity when maintaining their existing diet and lifestyle. (2) Material and methods: There were 419 sports class primary school pupils in the experimental group who, in addition to four obligatory weekly physical education hours, attended six training hours. The control group comprised 485 children from parallel non-sports classes. In all pupils, height and weight measurements as well as physical fitness measurements were taken twice, at the beginning and end of the school year. Cole's method was used to assess the children's normal body weight. With the help of this method, children with excessive body weight were selected from the entire study group (N = 904), who additionally had skinfolds and adipose tissue measured using the BIA electrical bioimpedance method. The obtained results were interpreted using the variance analysis for repeated measurements and LSD test. (3) Results: The number of children with excessive body mass after 10 months of increased physical activity decreased (in the case of overweight: p = 0.0014, obesity: p = 0.0022), as did their skinfolds (p ≤ 0.001) and body fat (p ≤ 0.001), while their physical fitness considerably improved compared to the control group. (4) Conclusions: The introduction of increased physical activity in the experimental group children when maintaining their existing diet and lifestyle contributed to reducing their obesity and overweight and, at the same time, proved to be an effective factor in the process of decreasing their excessive body mass.

Abstract
Lipoprotein(a) is an inherent CVD risk biomarker that varies by race, and the levels of Lp(a) in Saudi women are relatively unexplored. We aimed to examine the effect of age and menopause on Lp(a) and explore the correlation between adiposity and cardiometabolic risk factors with Lp(a) in Saudi women. The third aim was to determine the predictors of elevated Lp(a) in this population. In this cross-sectional study of 229 women, we compared Lp(a) serum levels, adiposity indices, and lipid and glycemic profiles between menopausal groups. We used immunoturbidimetry to measure serum Lp(a) and BIA to assess body composition. We evaluated the relationship between Lp(a) and our parameters using ANOVA and Spearman's correlations. Regression was used to determine the predictors of high-risk Lp(a) levels. The mean of Lp(a) was 28.37 mg/dL, and the concentration increased significantly in postmenopausal (premenopausal 20.98 ± 12.30; perimenopausal 29.92 ± 9.53; postmenopausal 32.49 ± 9.83 mg/dL; p < 0.001. High-risk levels were 57.1% in postmenopausal and 19.1% in premenopausal. The magnitude of Lp(a) increased significantly after age 50. Lp(a) was significantly associated with age and cholesterol and negatively associated with % FFM. Lp(a) increased by 0.41 units for every year of age, indicating the strongest correlation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fluid overload is a major factor in morbidity and mortality in dialysis patients. Whole-body bioimpedance spectroscopy (WB-BIS) is a noninvasive method for assessing fluid status. We hypothesized that fluid status measurement of changes in total body water (TBW), extracellular fluid (ECF), and intracellular fluid (ICF) by WB-BIS would correlate with the weight (Wt) changes before and after hemodialysis (HD) and the amount of ultrafiltration (UF) in pediatric HD patients. We also examined the relationship between the ECF percent of total body water (ECF%) and ECF/ICF ratio with the pre-HD systolic blood pressure percentile (SBP%ile). METHODS WB-BIS measurements were made both before and after HD on three separate occasions in each patient. Pre- and post-HD Wt, BP, and UF volumes were collected on the day of BIS measurement. RESULTS At total of 96 measurements were obtained from 16 HD patients. There were 6 females (mean age: 13.2 ± 4.5 yrs). UF correlated with changes in weight, TBW and ECF (p < 0.001) but not with ICF changes (p = 0.345). Pre-HD SBP%ile correlated with ECF%. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that WB-BIS can be used to monitor the fluid status in pediatric HD patients. The fluid that is removed from the patient during the HD treatment primarily comes from the ECF and not the ICF. Mobilization of fluid from the ICF appears to be delayed. Patients with significantly higher pre-HD ECF% and ECF/ICF ratio had higher pre-HD systolic BP. A higher resolution version of the Graphical abstract is available as Supplementary information.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES We aimed to evaluate the relationships between body fat percentage (BF%), fat mass (FM), fat mass index (FMI) and visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) with risk of all-cause mortality. METHODS We did a systematic search in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to June 2021. We selected prospective cohorts of the relationship between body fat with risk of all-cause mortality in the general population. We applied random-effects models to calculate the relative risks (RRs) and 95%CIs. RESULTS A total of 35 prospective cohort studies with 923,295 participants and 68,389 deaths were identified. The HRs of all-cause mortality for a 10% increment in BF were 1.11 (95%CI: 1.02, 1.20; I2 = 93%, n = 11) in the general adult populations, and 0.92 (95%CI: 0.79, 1.06; I2 = 76%, n = 7) in adults older than 60 years. The HRs were 1.06 (95%CI: 1.01, 1.12; I2 = 86%, n = 10) for a 5 kg increment in FM, 1.11 (95%CI: 1.06, 1.16; I2 = 79%, n = 7) for a 2 kg/m2 increment in FMI, and 1.17 (95%CI: 1.03, 1.33; I2 = 72%, n = 8) and 0.81 (0.66, 0.99; I2 = 59%, n = 6) for a 1-SD increment in VAT and SAT, respectively. There was a J shaped association between BF% and FM and all-cause mortality risk, with the lowest risk at BF% of 25% and FM of 20 kg. In subgroup analyses, although there was little evidence of between-subgroup heterogeneity, the observed positive associations were more pronounced in studies which had a longer duration, excluded participants with prevalent cardiovascular disease and cancer at baseline, with adjustment for smoking or restricted to never smokers, and less pronounced in studies which adjusted for potential intermediates, suggesting an impact of reverse causation, confounding and over-adjustment in some of the studies. CONCLUSIONS Higher body fat content was related to a higher risk of mortality in a J shaped manner. Any future studies should further assess the impact of reverse causation and residual confounding on these associations. REGISTRATION PROSPERO (CRD42021240743).

Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to i) investigate the physiological and perceptual responses to two different active video games (AVGs), ii) compare the physiological and perceptual responses to AVGs with those encountered during classic exercise and daily sedentary routines, and iii) compare the examined variables between the sexes. Methods: Forty-three (n = 22 male, n = 21 female) volunteers participated in the study and were tested in five different conditions (resting, watching television (TV), brisk walking, AVG dancing, and AVG fighting). Oxygen consumption (VO2) and heart rate (HR) were measured continuously, whereas energy expenditure (EE) and metabolic equivalent (MET) were calculated. Rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and enjoyment scores were recorded. Results: AVG dancing and AVG fighting significantly increased VO2, MET, EE, and HR compared with brisk walking, resting, and watching TV. Comparing with brisk walking the AVG dancing yielded similar RPE and higher enjoyment scores. However, the highest physiological responses, RPE, and enjoyment scores were obtained during AVG fighting. There were significant sex x condition interactions for VO2, MET, EE, and HR. VO2, MET, and EE were significantly higher in males for all conditions, whereas HR was significantly higher in females. The mean EE values during AVG fighting and AVG dancing were 13.12 ± 2.2 kcal.min-1 and 9.69 ± 2.0 kcal.min-1, respectively in males, and 9.31 ± 1.9 kcal.min-1 and 7.07 ± 1.3 kcal.min-1, respectively in females. Conclusions: AVG dancing (MET >7) and AVG fighting (MET >9) are enjoyable, vigorous physical activities that can be recommended as an alternative home-based physical activity.

Abstract
Body fat distribution seems to have different effects in cardiovascular diseases (CVD). We aimed to estimate the associations between lower limbs and trunk fat ratio and the 10-year CVD risk, and isolated risk factors in men and women. A total of 10,917 participants from ELSA-Brasil were eligible for this cross-sectional study. Associations between lower limb/trunk fat ratio with the percentage of 10-year CVD risk - according to the Framingham Risk Score - and its risk factors (systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol, diabetes, and use of antihypertensive medication) were performed using generalized linear models, linear and logistic regressions. All analyses were stratified by gender and adjustments were made by age, self-reported skin color, educational attainment, alcohol consumption, leisure physical activity, hypolipidemic drug use and, for women, menopausal status. In this study, 55.91% were women, with a mean age of 52.68 (SD = 6.57) years. A higher lower limb/trunk fat ratio was related to lower 10-year CVD risk, as well as a reduction in systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, and antihypertensive drug use, also an increasing HDL-cholesterol in both genders, but this relationship was stronger in women. Besides, a protective relationship to diabetes was observed in women. Higher fat accumulation in the lower body, when compared to the trunk, seems to have a lower risk of CVD and associated risk factors - even in the presence of fat in the abdominal region - with women presenting lower risks than men.

Abstract
The research goal was to estimate physical development of schoolchildren as per data of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) of body composition depending on their sex and age. Physical activity (PA) is an important factor in providing physical welfare of schoolchildren and this makes the present research relevant today. We examined 604 schoolchildren. At present a share of schoolchildren who have physical activity with its duration corresponding to the WHO recommendations doesn’t exceed 45%. We established an inverse correlation between a share of Skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and age. The determination coefficient which showed a variability a share of SMM and fat mass depending on a combination of PA regularity and duration didn’t exceed 0.06. It grew up to 0.19 after we assessed influence exerted by schoolchildren’s age on the absolute value of BMM share. A contribution made by age to this parameter was by 8.0 times higher among boys than among girls. We detected an age-specific decline in a probability of lower SMM share which was by up to 11.8 times lower among boys than among girls. These established sex-related differences in probable age-specific decrease in physical development make BIA a more valuable source of information for motivating schoolchildren to have more PA and improve their health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low skeletal muscle mass (SMM) is an emerging risk factor of cardiovascular disease (CVD). We investigated the association between SMM and coronary artery calcification (CAC). METHODS We enrolled 19,728 adults free of CVD who underwent computed tomographic estimation of Agatston CAC scores for cross-sectional analysis. Among them, 5,401 subjects who had at least 2 follow-up CAC scores were included in longitudinal analysis. Relative SMM is presented as the skeletal muscle mass index [SMI (%) = total appendicular muscle mass (kg)/body weight (kg) × 100]. CAC presence and incidence were defined as CAC score > 0, and CAC progression was defined as √CAC score (follow-up) - √CAC score (baseline) > 2.5. RESULTS Among all of the subjects (mean age 53.4 years, 80.8% male), the prevalence of CAC was 36.7%. The incidence of CAC was 17.4% during a mean of 3.6 years, and the progression of CAC was 49.9% during a mean of 2.3 years. The lowest SMI quartile was significantly associated with an increased risk of CAC presence (adjusted odds ratio 2.75, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.45-3.05; P < 0.001), incidence (adjusted hazard ratio [AHR] 1.99, 95% CI 1.36-2.91; P < 0.001), and progression (AHR 1.48, 95% CI 1.25-1.77; P < 0.001) compared with the highest quartile. SMI as a continuous value was also significantly inversely associated with CAC. SMI was the best parameter to be related to CAC among other quantitative indices such as height or body mass index adjusted. CONCLUSIONS Low SMM is significantly associated with an elevated risk of CAC, independently from other cardiometabolic parameters.

Abstract
Pregnancy is a time of significant changes occurring in the composition of a woman’s body in order to provide support for the growth and development of the foetus. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is used to assess the body composition and hydration status. This technique represents a non-invasive, reliable, and fast clinical approach, which is well tolerated by patients. A segmental impedance measurement might be advantageous in pregnant women, particularly in late pregnancy. The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of different applications of BIA in pregnant and postpartum women. It seems that BIA has a better prognostic potential for gestational and post-partum outcomes than body mass index. The BIA method can be successfully used to study the effect of excessive gestational weight gain in pregnancy on the development of obstetric complications. Studying the mother’s body composition and correlating it with her energy balance could facilitate the development of dietary recommendations for women. Evaluation of the body composition can provide important clues for diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus in pregnant women with a low risk of this disease. BIA is also used as one of the additional tests in assessing the risk of developing gestational hypertension and preeclampsia.

Abstract
Obesity-related inflammation is associated with cardiovascular, metabolic, and pulmonary diseases. The aim of this study was to demonstrate associations between adiposity measurements and levels of inflammation-related plasma proteins in a population of young adults. Subjects from a population-based birth cohort with a mean age of 22.5 years were included in the study population (n = 2074). Protein levels were analyzed using the Olink Proseek Multiplex Inflammation panel. Percentage body fat (%BF) and visceral fat rating (VFR) measurements were collected using Tanita MC 780 body composition monitor. Linear regression of standardized values was used to investigate associations. Potential effect modifications by sex and BMI category were assessed. Of 71 investigated proteins, 54 were significantly associated with all adiposity measurements [%BF, body mass index (BMI), VFR and waist circumference]. Among proteins associated with %BF, seven showed a larger or unique association in overweight/obese subjects and three showed a significant effect modification by sex. Fourteen proteins more strongly associated with VFR in females compared to males. Adipose-associated systemic inflammation was observed in this young adult population. Sex and adiposity localization influenced some of the associations. Our results highlight specific proteins as suitable biomarkers related to adiposity.

Abstract
Rationale Asthma, obesity and physical activity (PA) are interrelated. However, longitudinal data with objective PA measures and direct assessment of body composition are still lacking. Objective To study the impact of symptom control on PA and body composition. Methods In a longitudinal cohort study of the German Center for Lung Research, we assessed the body composition of 233 asthma patients and 84 healthy controls using bioelectrical impedance analysis. PA (ie average daily steps and time of at least moderate activity, steps/min) was measured by accelerometry for one week. Asthma control was assessed by ACT score, ACQ-5 score and history of severe exacerbations. After two years of follow-up, we studied changes in physical activity and body composition in relation to asthma control. Results Patients with uncontrolled asthma had increased fat mass and decreased muscle mass compared to patients with controlled asthma or healthy controls. Both fat mass and muscle mass correlated better with asthma control than the body mass index (BMI). In multivariate regressions adjusted for age and sex, asthma control and physical activity were independent predictors of body composition (R2 = 0.61, p < 0.001). Persistent uncontrolled asthma patients (n=64) had lower physical activity at both baseline (6614 steps/118 min) and follow-up (6195/115). Despite having stable BMI, they also had significant muscle loss (−1.2%, −0.88 kg, p<0.01) and fat accumulation (+1%, +1.1 kg, p<0.01). By contrast, temporarily uncontrolled or controlled asthma patients had higher physical activity at baseline (8670/156) and follow -up (9058/153) with almost unchanged body composition. Conclusion Persistent uncontrolled asthma is associated with sustained physical inactivity and adverse changes in body composition that might be overlooked by relying solely on BMI. Physical activity is an independent predictor of body composition and reliable long-term marker of symptom control.

Abstract
Background The BMI index cannot always be used in people with intellectual disabilities due to neuromuscular coordination disorders and psychological barriers that may hinder conventional body weight measurement. The study aimed to assess the usefulness of BMI and BAI in estimating obesity and body fat in people with intellectual disabilities.
Methods The first stage of the research involved 161 people with profound intellectual disabilities. Somatic parameters (BM, BH, WC, HC) were measured and BMI, BAI, WHR were calculated. Fifty seven persons with above-normal BMI and BAI were included in the second stage of the study and biochemical parameters were determined (TC, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, TG, GL). Results According to both BMI and BAI classifications, most people were overweight or obese. A high correlation of %BF with BMI and BAI indices was observed (r = 0.78). The sensitivity of both indices was 95.65%. In groups with above-normal BMI and BAI, an upward trend was found for mean values of TC, LDL, TG, and GL, with a simultaneous downward trend for HDL. Statistically significant intergroup differences were recorded for TG and GL (p < 0.05) for both indices (BMI and BAI). Conclusions Our research demonstrated that BAI is complementary to BMI and can be recommended for the estimation of body fat and cardiometabolic risks in people with intellectual disabilities. Due to the ease of measurement, BAI has high utility value.

Abstract
The randomized controlled High-Intensity Interval Training in De Novo Heart Transplant Recipients in Scandinavia (HITTS) study compared 9 months of high-intensity interval training (HIT) with moderate intensity continuous training in de novo heart transplant recipients. In our 3-year follow-up study, we aimed to determine whether the effect of early initiation of HIT on peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak ) persisted for 2 years postintervention. The study's primary end point was the change in VO2peak (mL/kg/min). The secondary end points were muscle strength, body composition, heart rate response, health-related quality of life, daily physical activity, biomarkers, and heart function. Of 78 patients who completed the 1-year HITTS trial, 65 entered our study and 62 completed the study tests. VO2peak increased from baseline to 1 year and leveled off thereafter. During the intervention period, the increase in VO2peak was larger in the HIT arm; however, 2 years later, there was no significant between-group difference in VO2peak . However, the mean change in the anaerobic threshold and extensor muscle endurance remained significantly higher in the HIT group. Early initiation of HIT after heart transplantation appears to have some sustainable long-term effects. Clinical trial registration number: NCT01796379.

Abstract
AIMS To determine the predictive performance of well-known obesity markers: body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-hip ratio (WHR), waist-height ratio (WHtR), and total body fat percentage (TBF%), to identify incident cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus T2DM. METHODS Secondary data analysis of the CRONICAS Cohort Study, conducted in 3 regions of Peru. Participants without T2DM at baseline were selected for analyses. The obesity markers were evaluated at the beginning of the study, and the development of T2DM was determined at 30 months of follow-up. The predictive performance of the markers was calculated using areas under the curve (AUC), and sensitivity and specificity of the best cutoff points were estimated. RESULTS A total of 2510 participants with no diabetes at baseline, median age 54.1 years (inter-quartile range: 44.6 to 63.5), were included in the analysis. The cumulative incidence of T2DM at 30 months of follow-up was 4.7%. All the AUC studied for obesity markers and TBF% were poor. CONCLUSIONS We found that obesity markers had a poor predictive performance (AUC) for the incidence of T2DM when used alone. The BMI, WC and WHtR had better performance for the incidence of T2DM relative to the WHR among women, and no differences in performance between obesity markers were found among men.

Phase angle is associated with length of hospital stay, readmissions, mortality, and falls in patients hospitalized in internal-medicine wards: A retrospective cohort study. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive value of bioimpedance phase angle (PA) on selected clinical outcomes in patients hospitalized in internal-medicine wards. METHODS This was a retrospective observational study of 168 patients admitted to the internalmedicine service (52.9% women, 47.1% men), with a mean (± SD) age of 73.9 ± 15.9 y. Anthropometric examination, laboratory tests, and bioelectrical impedance analysis were performed. Bioimpedance-derived PA was the study's parameter. Length of hospital stay, prospective all-cause hospital readmission, mortality, and falls were the clinical endpoints. RESULTS Across the four PA quartile groups, age was incrementally higher (P ≤ 0.001). Multivariate linear regression models showed that PA quartile 1 was significantly associated with length of hospital stay (β, SE) in both crude and adjusted models-respectively, β (SE) = 6.199 (1.625), P ≤ 0.001, and β = 2.193 (1.355), P = 0.033. Over a 9-mo follow-up period, the hazard ratios for readmission, in-hospital falls, and mortality were associated with the lowest phase angle (PA quartile 1 versus quartiles 2-4)-respectively, 2.07 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.28-3.35), 2.36 (95% CI, 1.05-5.33), and 2.85 (95% CI, 1.01-7.39). Associations between narrow PA and outcomes continued to be significant after adjustments for various confounders. CONCLUSIONS In internal-medicine wards, bioimpedance-derived PA emerged as a predictor of length of hospital stay, hospital readmission, falls, and mortality. The present findings suggest that in the hospital setting, PA assessment could be useful in identifying patients at higher risk who need specific nutritional support.

Abstract
BACKGROUND ESRD (End-stage renal disease) treatment is a comprehensive medical process and requires numerous serological biochemical tests (SBTs) in diagnosis. To reduce these invasive, expensive, cumbersome, and time-consuming SBTs, there is a need to develop an alternative serological biochemical composition evaluation method. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is affected by body's chemical and physical components, which might be correlated with serological biochemical composition and can be potentially used to evaluate biochemical composition in hemodialysis patient treatments. In this work, the relationship of classic and specific bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) with major serological biochemical indexes in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients was examined. METHODS Bioelectrical and biochemical datasets were measured from 280 women and 408 men and formed 3872 effective biochemical-bioelectrical records in total. Statistical analysis was performed. RESULTS The results show that BIVA vectors have strong relationship with phosphorus, hemoglobin, and PTH in both male and female groups. Strong correlation was also observed between Ca, albumin, CHOL, LDLC, and BIVA vectors in the male group. In the female group, a significant correlation was observed between classic BIVA values and NT-proBNP. SVM models are effective for classifying biochemical indexes. CONCLUSIONS The obtained correlations and SVM classification models imply that BIVA can be used as a preliminary tool to evaluate and classify the degree of anemia, malnutrition, fluid overload, and mineral and bone disorder (MBD) in MHD patients by reducing the number of SBTs.

Abstract
Muscle contracture development is a major complication for individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) and has lifelong implications. In order to recognize contracture development early and to follow up on preventive interventions aimed at muscle health development, non-invasive, and easy to use methods are needed. The aim of the present study was to assess whether multi-frequency Bioimpedance (mfBIA) can be used to detect differences between skeletal muscle of individuals with CP and healthy controls. The mfBIA technique was applied to the medial gastrocnemius muscle of n = 24 adults with CP and n = 20 healthy controls of both genders. The phase angle (PA) and the centre frequency (fc) were significantly lower in individuals with CP when compared to controls; PA: - 25% for women and - 31.8% for men (P < 0.0001); fc: - 5.6% for women and - 5.2% for men (P < 0.009). The reactance (Xc) and the extracellular resistance (Re) of skeletal muscle from individuals with CP were significantly higher when compared to controls; Xc: + 9.9% for women and + 28.9% for men (P < 0.0001); Re: + 39.7% for women and + 91.2% for men (P < 0.0001). The present study shows that several mfBIA parameters differ significantly between individuals with CP and healthy controls. Furthermore, these changes correlated significantly with the severity of CP, as assessed using the GMFCS scale. The present data indicate that mfBIA shows promise in terms of being a useful diagnostic tool, capable of characterizing muscle health and its development in individuals with cerebral palsy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Phthalate is a well-known endocrine-disrupting chemical that has anti-androgenic effects. Although there are several studies on the relationship between body composition and phthalate, studies that investigated the effects of phthalate on skeletal muscle during childhood are lacking. METHODS We analyzed data from 481 mother-and-child pairs enrolled in the Environment and Development of Children cohort in South Korea. We examined the association between phthalate metabolites (mono [2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl] phthalate [MEHHP], mono [2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl] phthalate [MEOHP], molar sum of MEHHP and MEOHP [Σ DEHP], and mono-n-butyl phthalate [MnBP]) in prenatal maternal urine and children's urine at the age of 6, and body composition indices (body mass index [BMI] z-score, percentage of fat mass, fat mass index, percentage of skeletal muscle, and the skeletal muscle index [SMI]) measured when the child was 6 years using a bioelectrical impedance analyzer. RESULTS A 2-fold increase in Σ DEHP and MnBP in the prenatal maternal urine was significantly associated with a -0.07 unit (95% CI: -0.11, -0.03) and -0.09 unit (95% CI: -0.14, -0.03) change in SMI, respectively, in 6-year old girls alone. BMI z-score was also negatively associated with a 2-fold increase in MEHHP and MnBP in prenatal maternal urine as -0.11 unit (95% CI: -0.22, -0.01) and -0.15 unit (95% CI: -0.28, -0.02) change, respectively, only among girls. Among boys, phthalate metabolites in the prenatal and children's urine were not significantly associated with any body composition indices. CONCLUSIONS Our longitudinal study shows that high levels of prenatal exposure to phthalates are significantly associated with decreased SMI among girls. We can postulate that anti-androgenic effects of phthalates during pregnancy may affect girl offspring's muscle growth.

Abstract
Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR gamma-2) and beta-3-adrenergic receptors (ADRB3) are involved in the risk of hypertension. But their exact role in blood pressure modulation in patients with connective tissue diseases (CTD) is still not well defined. In this study, 104 patients with CTD and 103 gender- and age-matched controls were genotyped for Pro12Ala and C1431T polymorphisms of the PPAR gamma-2 gene and Trp64Arg polymorphism of the ADRB gene. Anthropometric and biochemical measurements were evaluated, followed by genotyping using TaqMan® SNP genotyping assays and polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. The prevalence of analyzed genotypes and alleles was comparable between patients with CTD and the control group, as well as hypertensive and normotensive subjects. Patients with CTD have lower body fat and higher body water amount, serum glucose, and triglyceride (TG) levels. Hypertensive subjects are older and have higher body mass, BMI, waist circumference (WC), body water content, glucose, and TG concentration. The multivariate analysis revealed that hypertensive subjects with Ala12/X or Trp64Trp have higher body mass and WC when compared to normotensive subjects. Trp64Trp polymorphism was also characterized by a higher TG level, while T1431/X subjects had higher WC. The presence of CTD, visceral fat distribution, and increased age are the predictors of hypertension development. Hypertensive patients with CTD and Trp64Trp polymorphism have an increased risk of visceral obesity development and metabolic complications, which in turn affects the value of blood pressure. In addition, either Ala12/X or T1431/X predicts the visceral body fat distribution in hypertensive subjects.

Abstract
AIMS To analyze the association of classic and specific bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) and phase angle with reference techniques for the assessment of body composition in athletes. METHODS 202 athletes of both sexes (men: 21.5 ± 5.0; women: 20.7 ± 5.1) engaged in different sports were evaluated during the in-season period. Bioelectrical resistance (R, ohm) and reactance (Xc, ohm) were obtained with a phase-sensitive 50 kHz bioelectrical impedance analysis device. The classic and specific BIVA procedures, which respectively correct bioelectrical values for body height (R/H and Xc/H, ohm/m) and body geometry (Rsp and Xcsp, ohm cm), were applied. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry was used as the reference method to assess fat-mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM) and %FM. Deuterium dilution and bromide dilution where used as the criterion method for total body water (TBW) and extracellular water (ECW), respectively. Intracellular water (ICW) was calculated as TBW minus ECW. RESULTS Specific bioelectrical values (Rsp, Xcsp, Zsp) were positively correlated with FM and %FM (%FM; Zsp men: r = 0.569, p < 0.001; Zsp women: r = 0.773, p < 0.001). Classic values (R/H, Xc/H, Z/H) were negatively correlated with FM and FFM, but were correlated with %FM only in men (Z/H men: r = -0.214, p = 0.013; Z/H women: r = 0.218, p = 0.097). As to body fluid, classic BIVA showed strong associations (Z/H men: r = -0.880, p < 0.001; Z/H women: r = -0.829, p < 0.001) with TBW, whereas Zsp was not correlated. Phase angle was negatively correlated with ECW/ICW ratio in both sexes (men: r = -0.493, p < 0.001; women: r = -0.408, p < 0.001) and positively with ICW (men: r = 0.327, p < 0.001; women: r = 0.243, p = 0.080). CONCLUSIONS Specific BIVA turns out to be more accurate for the analysis of %FM in athletes, while it does not correctly evaluate TBW, for which classic BIVA appears to be a suitable approach. Phase angles, and hence both BIVA approaches, can detect ECW/ICW changes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Body mass index is a simple anthropometric measure (kg/m2) used as an indirect estimate of body fat in individuals, and in assessments of population health and comparisons between populations. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is often used to provide additional information on body fat and fat-free mass, and has been used to generate body composition reference data in national health surveys. However, BIA measurements are known to be device-specific and there are few published studies comparing results from different BIA instruments. Therefore, we compared the performance of two BIA instruments in the Russian Children's Study (RCS) of male growth, pubertal development and maturation. METHODS Paired BIA measurements were obtained using the Tanita BC-418MA (Tanita Corp., Tokyo, Japan) and ABC-01 'Medas' (Medas Ltd, Moscow, Russia) BIA instruments. Cross-sectional data on 236 RCS subjects aged 18-22 years were used for the BIA comparison and the development of a conversion formula between measured resistances; follow-up data (n = 96) were used for validation of the conversion formula. RESULTS Whole-body resistances were highly correlated (Spearman rho = 0.95), but fat mass (FM) estimates were significantly higher with the Medas than the Tanita device (median difference 3.3 kg, 95% CI: 2.9, 3.6 kg) with large limits of agreement (LoA) for the FM difference (-2.0, 8.6 kg). A conversion formula between the resistances (Res) was obtained: Medas Res = 0.882 × Tanita Res+26.2 (r2 = 0.91, SEE = 17.6 Ohm). After applying the conversion formula to Tanita data and application of the Medas assessment algorithm, the 'converted' Tanita FM estimates closely matched the Medas original estimates (median difference -0.1 kg, 95% CI: -0.3, 0.2 kg), with relatively small LoA for the FM difference (-2.3 to 2.1 kg), suggesting potential interchangeability of the ABC-01 'Medas' and Tanita BC-418MA data at the group level. CONCLUSIONS Our results support the importance of cross-calibration of BIA instruments for population comparisons and proper data interpretation in clinical and epidemiological studies.

Abstract
Background Recent studies have suggested an association between sleep apnea (SA) and atrial fibrillation (AF). We aimed to study the prevalence, characteristics, risk factors and type of sleep apnea (SA) in ablation candidates with paroxysmal AF. Methods/Results We prospectively studied 579 patients with paroxysmal AF, including 157 women (27.1%) and 422 men (72.9%). Mean age was 59.9 ± 9.6 years and mean body mass index (BMI) 28.5 ± 4.5 kg/m2. SA was diagnosed using polygraphy for two nights at home. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), STOP-Bang Questionnaire, and Berlin Questionnaire (BQ) assessed the degree of SA symptoms. A total of 479 (82.7%) patients had an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 5, whereas moderate-severe SA (AHI ≥ 15) was diagnosed in 244 patients (42.1%). The type of SA was predominantly obstructive, with a median AHI of 12.1 (6.7–20.6) (range 0.4–85.8). The median central apnea index was 0.3 (0.1–0.7). AHI increased with age, BMI, waist and neck circumference, body and visceral fat. Using the Atrial Fibrillation Severity Scale and the SF-36, patients with more severe SA had a higher AF burden, severity and symptom score and a lower Physical-Component Summary score. Age, male gender, BMI, duration of AF, and habitual snoring were independent risk factors in multivariate analysis (AHI ≥ 15). We found no association between ESS and AHI (R2 = 0.003, p = 0.367). Conclusions In our AF population, SA was highly prevalent and predominantly obstructive. The high prevalence of SA detected in this study may indicate that SA is under-recognized in patients with AF. None of the screening questionnaires predicted SA reliably.

Abstract
High body mass index (BMI) is the most common parameter to assess excess adiposity, and has been linked to glomerular hyperfiltration (GH). However, BMI may be misleading in the estimation of body fat content due to its inability to discriminate between body fat and lean mass. In recent years, the convenient biological impedance analysis has made prediction of certain diseases somewhat feasible and accessible using body composition (BC). Accordingly, we conducted a cross-sectional study to explore the association between BC and GH among Chinese adult population. A total of 6902 adults (aged 38.6 ± 8.3 years, 70.1% males) who consecutively visited the Health Checkup Clinic were enrolled. BC including fat mass and lean body mass (LBM) was evaluated by biological impedance analysis. The upper quartile of eGFR which exceeded 117.3 mL/min/1.73 m2 was defined as GH, in comparison with the lower three quartiles (control group). As a categorical outcome, GH subjects had higher fat/LBM than the control group, which was 34.7 ± 10.9 (%) vs. 34.0 ± 10.5 (%), P = 0.01; however, the BMI in GH group was lower than in the control group, which was 24.5 ± 3.7 (%) vs. 24.9 ± 3.6 (%), P < 0.001. Fat/height and Fat/BSA were not significantly different between the two groups. Moreover, after adjusting for potential confounders, fat/LBM significantly correlated with GH (OR = 2.09, 95% CI, 1.11 to 3.93). The study revealed that fat/LBM significantly correlated with GH among Chinese adult population, which highlights that adiposity might be an important and potentially modifiable determinant of GH.

Abstract
This study investigated the localized electrical-impedance changes in the biceps tissues throughout a fatiguing exercise protocol. During the protocol, 17 subjects performed 10 sets of bicep curl repetitions at either 60% or 75% of their one-repetition maximum weight until task failure. The localized tissue impedance (resistance, reactance, phase angle) was measured at 10 kHz, 50 kHz, and 100 kHz immediately after each of 10 sets for comparison against the baseline pre-fatigue measures. A trend of decreasing resistance and reactance magnitude were observed, with greater changes occurring as the protocol progressed. Statistical testing demonstrated statistically significant changes in resistance, reactance, and phase angle for both groups of participants. The significant changes in resistance were observed at earlier time-points than the reactance and phase angle changes for both groups.

Abstract
The primary aim was to appraise the relationship between body fat percentage and the inflammatory markers C-reactive protein (CRP) and orosomucoid in a population of young, non-smoking, healthy, Swedish adults, without any chronic diseases. A secondary aim was to compare whether these associations differed between the women using estrogen contraceptives and those who did not. We assessed the association in linear regression models between body fat percentage based on a bio-impedance measurement and plasma concentrations of CRP and orosomucoid in men and women aged 18-26 years, n = 834. Statistically significant associations were found between body fat percentage and both biomarkers of inflammation, with β coefficients of 0.30 (95% CI 0.24-0.37) and 0.28 (0.22-0.35) for CRP and orosomucoid, respectively (p < .001). Adjustment for established risk factors marginally lowered the effects sizes (partial betas, 0.28 and 0.20, respectively), while the strong statistically significant associations remained. In the female cohort, estrogen and non-estrogen using subpopulations did not significantly differ in the correlations between body fat percentage and the inflammatory biomarkers, even adjusted for established cardiometabolic risk factors. In conclusion, in healthy young adults, higher levels of body fat percentage are associated with elevations in plasma biomarkers of inflammation, suggesting that a systemic inflammatory process, promoting atherosclerosis, may commence already at this early stage in life. CRP and orosomucoid plasma concentrations differed between users and non-users of estrogen contraceptives, but both subgroups showed similar correlations between increasing body fat percentage and increasing plasma concentrations of the biomarkers of inflammation.

Abstract
There are few studies investigating the role of Ramadan fasting on body composition and the characteristics of metabolic syndrome, especially in hot environments. The main aim of the study was to investigate the effect of Ramadan fasting on body composition and the characteristics of metabolic syndrome in apparently healthy men. In a randomized design, 44 college students aged 27.6 ± 5.8 years were selected to participate in the present study. Lifestyle was assessed by a developed questionnaire, body composition was measured using a bioelectrical impedance analyzer, and blood parameters were evaluated by taking a vein blood sample (10 ml) after fasting 10 hr. All measurements were taken 2-3 days before the month of Ramadan, at the end of Week 2 and end of Week 3, and 6 weeks later. The results identified no significant changes in any of the body composition parameters before, during, or after the month of Ramadan. The only significant change in blood parameters was recorded as a positive reduction in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) during the month of Ramadan, compared to before and after Ramadan. No major changes in metabolic syndrome factors were seen except in fasting blood glucose and systolic blood pressure as both factors were slightly but significantly elevated during the month of Ramadan and even after Ramadan, though both of them were within normal levels. This study concludes that Ramadan fasting could be one of the factors that reduce LDL. More studies are needed to clarify the role of Ramadan fasting on different populations such as obese and diabetic patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the associations of estimated resting metabolic rate (RMR), body fat (BF), subcutaneous fat (SCF), visceral fat (VF), fat-free mass (FFM) percentage, BMI, and waist circumference (WC) with diabetic retinopathy (DR) in Indonesian adults with type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS This was a community-based cross-sectional study of 1,184 subjects with type 2 diabetes. DR was assessed from fundus photography and categorized as mild, moderate nonproliferative DR (NPDR), and vision-threatening DR (VTDR). RMR and body composition parameters were measured using automated body composition scan. Logistic regression with semipartial correlation analysis was used. RESULTS DR and VTDR were present in 43.1 and 26.3% of participants, respectively. After adjustment for age, sex, diabetes duration, fasting glucose, systolic blood pressure, smoking, diabetic ulcer, and use of combined diabetes treatment, per SD increase in RMR (odds ratio [OR] 2.60 [95% CI 2.19-3.07]; P < 0.001) was associated with DR, while per SD increases in BF (0.66 [95% CI 0.56-0.78]; P < 0.001), FFM (0.69 [0.57-0.84]; P < 0.001), VF (0.77 [0.67-0.88]; P < 0.001), BMI (0.83 [0.73-0.94]; P = 0.004), and WC (0.81 [0.73-0.91]; P < 0.001) were inversely associated with presence of DR. Similar associations were found for VTDR. Among all variables, RMR had the largest contribution to the variance in the DR model (39%). CONCLUSIONS In this study, RMR and body composition measures were strongly associated with and contributed considerably to the presence and severity of DR. These findings, if confirmed, suggest that RMR and body composition may be strong markers that represent actual metabolic state in the pathophysiology of DR.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Alterations in body compositions are strongly associated with poor outcomes in end-stage renal disease patients. Hence, assessment of lean body mass is crucial for clinically monitoring these patients. The use of multifrequency bioimpedance spectroscopy measurements has also been advocated, but their usefulness in children is questioned. We investigated whether their application is appropriate for lean body mass measurement in pediatric patients receiving chronic dialysis. METHODS Lean body mass estimates as assessed by multifrequency bioimpedance spectroscopy and by deuterium dilution were obtained for 15 patients (mean age 10.9 ± 3.6 years). RESULTS Lean body mass (mean ± standard deviation) determined by bioimpedance was 24.2 ± 10.7 and 24.4 ± 10.3 kg by deuterium technique. Bland-Altman analysis showed a mean (±standard deviation) difference between the 2 methods of -0.25 ± 2.30 kg with 95% limits of agreement of -4.80 to 4.25 kg. In a multiple linear regression model, the hydration status was associated with measurement bias after adjusting for age, sex, weight, and body surface area. CONCLUSIONS Our results show a high level of agreement between measurements by bioimpedance and deuterium technique, but the limits of agreement were wide. These findings do not support the use of bioimpedance to individually assess lean body mass in pediatric dialysis patients with and without overhydration.

METHODS To determine possible central (chronotropic responses, cardiopulmonary and hemodynamic function) and peripheral factors (muscular exercise capacity and body composition) predictive of VO2peak, a number of different measurements and tests were performed, as follows: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) was performed mean 11 wk after surgery in 81 HTx recipients > 18 years and was measured with breath by breath gas exchange on a treadmill or bicycle ergometer. Metabolic/respiratory measures include VO2peak and VE/VCO2 slope. Additional measures included muscle strength testing, bioelectrical impedance analysis, echocardiography, blood sampling and health-related quality of life. Based on the VO2peak (mL/kg per minute) median value, the study population was divided into two groups defined as a low-capacity group and a high-capacity group. Potential predictors were analyzed using multiple regression analysis with VO2peak (L/min) as the dependent variable.
RESULTS The mean ± standard deviation (SD) age of the total study population was 49 ± 13 years, and 73% were men. This de novo HTx cohort demonstrated a median VO2peak level of 19.4 mL/kg per min at 11 ± 1.8 wk post-HTx. As compared with the high-capacity group, the low-capacity group exercised for a shorter time, had lower maximal ventilation, O2 pulse, peak heart rate and heart rate reserve, while the VE/VCO2 slope was higher. The low-capacity group had less muscle strength and muscular exercise capacity in comparison with the high-capacity group. In order of importance, O2 pulse, heart rate reserve, muscular exercise capacity, body mass index, gender and age accounted for 84% of the variance in VO2peak (L/min). There were no minor or major serious adverse events during the CPET.
CONCLUSION Although there is great individual variance among de novo HTx recipients, early VO2peak measures appear to be influenced by both central and peripheral factors.

Abstract
Few studies have been conducted to measure body composition in Asian populations. In this study, we determined the percent body fat (PBF) by using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), air-displacement plethysmography (ADP or BOD POD), bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and skinfold (SKF) in 445 healthy Singaporean adults. We observed that the BOD POD, BIA and SKF estimates of PBF were highly correlated with that from DEXA (as a reference method) among Singaporean adults. However, they all underestimated PBF (differences of 3.9% for BOD POD, 5.6% for BIA and 12.5% for SKF). Our results filled a gap in the literature by testing the relationships between DEXA and BOD POD, BIA and SKF in a large sample with a wide range of body mass index (BMI) from 16.1 to 37.5 kg/m² and age from 21 to 69.2 years. The differences of PBF measured by different methods were dependent on age, gender and ethnicity. No significant difference was observed between DEXA and BOD POD in men aged > 40 or in BMI tertile 3. However, the mean difference between DEXA and BOD POD was significant in women. Different measuring methods of estimating PBF therefore must be cautiously interpreted.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine age- and gender-dependent whole-body adipose tissue and muscle volumes in healthy Swiss volunteers in Dixon MRI in comparison with anthropometric and bioelectrical impedance (BIA) measurements. METHODS Fat-water-separated whole-body 3 Tesla MRI of 80 healthy volunteers (ages 20 to 62 years) with a body mass index (BMI) of 17.5 to 26.2 kg/m2 (10 men, 10 women per decade). Age and gender-dependent volumes of total adipose tissue (TAT), visceral adipose tissue (VAT), total abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (ASAT) and total abdominal adipose tissue (TAAT), and the total lean muscle tissue (TLMT) normalized for body height were determined by semi-automatic segmentation, and correlated with anthropometric and BIA measurements as well as lifestyle parameters. RESULTS The TAT, ASAT, VAT, and TLMT indexes (TATi, ASATi, VATi, and TLMTi, respectively) (L/m2 ± standard deviation) for women/men were 6.4 ± 1.8/5.3 ± 1.7, 1.6 ± 0.7/1.2 ± 0.5, 0.4 ± 0.2/0.8 ± 0.5, and 5.6 ± 0.6/7.1 ± 0.7, respectively. The TATi correlated strongly with ASATi (r > 0.93), VATi, BMI and BIA (r > 0.70), and TAATi (r > 0.96), and weak with TLMTi for both genders (r > -0.34). The VAT was the only parameter showing an age dependency (r > 0.32). The BMI and BIA showed strong correlation with all MR-derived adipose tissue volumes. The TAT mass was estimated significantly lower from BIA than from MRI (both genders P < .001; mean bias -5 kg). CONCLUSIONS The reported gender-specific MRI-based adipose tissue and muscle volumes might serve as normative values. The estimation of adipose tissue volumes was significantly lower from anthropometric and BIA measurements than from MRI. Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is one of the major public health problems worldwide. The objective of the present study is to investigate the prevalence and the associated variables of MetS in Colombian collegiate students. This cross-sectional study included a total of 890 (52% women) healthy collegiate students (21.3 ± 3.2 years old). The prevalence of MetS was determined by the definition provided by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). We further examined associations between the prevalence of MetS and related factors, such as age, gender, anthropometric and body composition, weight status, and nutrition profile. The overall prevalence of MetS was 6.0% (95% CI = 4.5% to 7.6%), and it was higher in men than women. The most prevalent components were low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high triglyceride levels, waist circumference, and blood pressure levels. The predisposing factors for having a MetS included: being male, over 23 years old, overweight or obese, and having an unhealthy waist-to-height ratio. In conclusion, the occurrence of MetS in young adults is substantial. These findings may be relevant to health promotion efforts for collegiate students in order to develop prospective studies and screening for young adults, which will aid in targeted intervention development to decrease cardiometabolic risk factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accurately determining energy requirements is key for nutritional management of pediatric obesity. Recently, a portable handheld indirect calorimeter, MedGem (MG) has become available to measure resting energy expenditure (REE). Our work aims to determine the clinical validity and usefulness of MG to measure REE in overweight and obese adolescents. METHODS Thirty-nine overweight and obese adolescents (16 male (M): 23 female (F), 15.2 ± 1.9 y, BMI percentile: 98.6 ± 2.2%) and 15 normal weight adolescents (7M: 8F, age 15.2 ± 2.0 y, BMI percentile: 39.2 ± 20.9%) participated. REE was measured with both MG and standard indirect calorimeter (VMax) in random order. RESULTS MG REE (1,600 ± 372 kcal/d) was lower than VMax REE (1,727 ± 327 kcal/) in the overweight and obese adolescents. Bland Altman analysis (MG -VMax) showed a mean bias of -127 kcal/d (95% CI = -72 to -182 kcal/d, P < 0.001), and a proportional bias existed such that lower measured REE by VMax was underestimated by MG, and higher measured REE by VMax were overestimated by MG. CONCLUSION MG systematically underestimates REE in the overweight and adolescent population, thus the MG portable indirect calorimeter is not recommended for routine use. Considering that it is a systematic underestimation of REE, MG may be clinically acceptable, only if used with caution.

Abstract
PURPOSE There are no available data about diabetic retinopathy (DR) in the Indonesian population. This report summarizes the rationale and study design of the Jogjakarta Eye Diabetic Study in the Community (JOGED.COM), a community-based study to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of DR in persons with type 2 diabetes in Jogjakarta, Indonesia. METHODS The JOGED.COM aimed to examine a cross-sectional sample of 1200 persons with type 2 diabetes aged 30 years and older residing in the study area. We identified 121 community health centers (CHCs) in Jogjakarta and listed 35 CHCs with non-communicable diseases facilities. Multi-stage, clustered random sampling was used to select 22 CHCs randomly. We included CHCs with coverage population >30,000, and excluded those classified as 100% rural. Lists of persons with diabetes confirmed by their family physician were provided from each CHC. Examinations procedures included detailed interviews, general and eye examinations, anthropometry and body composition scan, and dilated fundus photography. RESULTS We collaborated with local health authorities, family physicians, and local health practitioners in the recruitment phase. A total of 1435 invitations were distributed, and 1184 people (82.5%) with type 2 diabetes participated in this study, of whom 1138 (79.3%) had completed data with gradable retinal images. CONCLUSIONS JOGED.COM is the first epidemiologic study of DR in an Indonesian population. This study will provide key information about the prevalence and risk factors of DR in the community. These data are very important for future health promotion programs to reduce the burden of DR in the population.
