Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive frailty and depression are prevalent among the elderly, significantly impairing physical and cognitive functions, psychological well-being, and quality of life. Effective interventions are essential to mitigate these adverse effects and enhance overall health outcomes in this population.
AIM To evaluate the effects of exercise-cognitive dual-task training on frailty, cognitive function, psychological status, and quality of life in elderly patients with cognitive frailty and depression.
METHODS A retrospective study was conducted on 130 patients with cognitive frailty and depression admitted between December 2021 and December 2023. Patients were divided into a control group receiving routine intervention and an observation group undergoing exercise-cognitive dual-task training in addition to routine care. Frailty, cognitive function, balance and gait, psychological status, and quality of life were assessed before and after the intervention.
RESULTS After the intervention, the frailty score of the observation group was (5.32 ± 0.69), lower than that of the control group (5.71 ± 0.55). The Montreal cognitive assessment basic scale score in the observation group was (24.06 ± 0.99), higher than the control group (23.43 ± 1.40). The performance oriented mobility assessment score in the observation group was (21.81 ± 1.24), higher than the control group (21.15 ± 1.26). The self-efficacy in the observation group was (28.27 ± 2.66), higher than the control group (30.05 ± 2.66). The anxiety score in the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) for the observation group was (5.86 ± 0.68), lower than the control group (6.21 ± 0.64). The depression score in the HADS for the observation group was (5.67 ± 0.75), lower than the control group (6.27 ± 0.92). Additionally, the scores for each dimension of the 36-item short form survey in the observation group were higher than those in the control group, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION Exercise-cognitive dual-task training is beneficial for improving frailty, enhancing cognitive function, and improving psychological status and quality of life in elderly patients with cognitive frailty and depression.

Abstract
Objective To summarize the characteristics, estimate the efficacy of multicomponent structured exercise (MSE) intervention on older adults' depression, and investigate its potential moderators. Methods MEDLINE, PubMed, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science and Embase databases were searched from January 1, 2000 to June 1, 2024. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that included MSE intervention with aerobic, resistance and balance components targeting older adults, and reported depression as an outcome were selected. Random-effects meta-analyses were used to calculate effect sizes from the standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). Meta-regression was conducted to identify the potential moderators. Results Data were extracted from 19 studies (22 comparisons) with 1763 older adults. MSE showed a significant intervention effect on buffering older adults' depression (SMD, -0.49; 95 % CI, -0.84 to -0.14) but with considerable heterogeneity (I2 = 92 %) and low certainty of evidence. In subgroup analyses, MSE with unhealthy status participants, intervention duration of 12-24 weeks, over 2 times/week intervention frequency, equipment used and ≥ 80 % retention rate showed significant effects on improvement of older adults' depression. Intervention frequency (β, -0.83; 95 % CI, -1.50 to -0.16) and retention rate (β, 0.80; 95 % CI, 0.05 to 1.56) were identified as moderators. Conclusion MSE significantly improved older adults' depression. The findings highlighted the importance of intervention frequency and retention rate in enhancing MSE effectiveness. More high quality RCTs are required to explore and optimize the intervention strategies and dosages of MSE to extend the application in the prevention and treatment of geriatric depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The practice of general gymnastics, aquatic activities, dance, yoga or pilates, bring benefits to the physical and mental health of people over 65 years of age. However, the benefits of the practice of these activities on the mental health of the older adults have not been studied in depth; without establishing differences by gender. AIM The aim of this work is to study whether the emotional state and social integration of older people differ according to the type of sport. The CUBRECAVI scale was used to assess mental health and social integration in 358 people over 61 years of age (M = 69.66, SD = 4.64). RESULTS The results showed that older adults people who do general gymnastics are more socially integrated (F = 4.842, p = .003) than those who do dance activities; while those who prefer aquatic activities report better mental health (F = 3.6, p = .002), than those who do general gymnastics (p = .001) or dance activities (p = .029). CONCLUSION The type of sporting activity performed by the older adults is associated with some aspects of their quality of life.

Abstract
Background: Osteoarticular deformities or contractures in institutionalized elderly individuals, described as acquired deforming hypertonia (ADH), have a multifactorial origin. The reported prevalence of ADH in French Caucasian patients in long-term care units (LTCUs) is 25.6%. To date, ADH in the Caribbean population has never been studied. We aimed to assess the prevalence and characteristics of ADH in such a population. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study of a French Caribbean population in Martinique in which patients aged 75 years or older were institutionalized in LTCUs during the study period. Data extraction from the medical files of eligible LTCU patients was conducted to assess the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and impact of ADH on patients' daily care. The assessments were performed collaboratively between the patients' geriatric team and a PM&R physician. Results: In total, 81 patients were included, with an ADH prevalence of 77.8%. Reported ADH was bilateral (86%) or multiple (66% of patients had ≥5 ADH) and was responsible for major alterations in terms of hygiene, dressing, pain, and skin damage. ADH patients had a high level of dependence (GMP = 924), and this level of dependence was significantly associated with the presence of at least one ADH (p < 0.001) regardless of prior disease. Conclusions: The incidence of ADH in our Caribbean population seems twice as high as that in Caucasian patients, underlining the necessity for this nosological framework to be better recognized, particularly in an insular context. Local campaigns for the prevention and recognition of ADH must be considered, and targeted multidisciplinary protocols need to be established for adapted care in all institutions receiving elderly people.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Falls among older adults are a pervasive and significant concern worldwide. A practice guideline has been developed to address the prevention of falls and their resulting consequences in hospital and long-term care settings. AIM The study aimed to assess the fall down rate and preventive tools among older adult patients in nursing homes. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted on randomly selected older adult patients by using a questionnaire with the Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries (STEADI) tool in nursing homes at the Ministry of Human Resource and Social Development. RESULTS Among 323 older adult patients, most of them (73.1%) were male, 23.8% were from Makkah, and the age ranged from 60 to 90 years and older. Results showed that 64.8% had a psychiatric disorder, 41.8% had hypertension, 38.4% had diabetes, 38.1% had movement disorders, 11.3% had heart diseases, and 1.5% had no chronic conditions. The mean STEADI tool score was 3.5 out of 12, and of the 323 older adult patients, 51.7% had a low risk to fall and 48.3% had a high risk to fall. Of the 13 interventions used to prevent falls, the most used intervention was rehabilitative physical therapy, followed by providing patient facilities and muscle strengthening exercises. CONCLUSIONS The level of falls was markedly low, and a significant correlation was observed between the risk of falling and the participants' region of residence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated the effects of dual-task resistance training (RT) and detraining on physical function, cognitive capacity, lipid profile, renal function, oxidative stress markers, and chronic inflammation of institutionalized older adults. METHODS The study involved 11 older adults (83.09 ± 8.1 years) residing in a long-term care institution, spanning 42 weeks with assessments at weeks 1, 14-15, 28, and 42. The initial 12 weeks following the first assessment (weeks 2-13) served as a baseline, during which participants maintained their routine activities. A dual-task resistance training protocol was implemented from weeks 16 to 27, followed by a detraining period from weeks 29 to 41. Assessments included clinical characteristics, physical function, cognitive ability, blood samples for biochemical parameters, oxidative stress, and chronic inflammation. RESULTS Dual-task RT significantly enhanced balance (p = 0.027) and 4 m walking speed (p = 0.027) post-training compared to the baseline. It also decreased the completion time for the sit-and-stand test both post-training (p = 0.008) and post-detraining (p = 0.015) relative to baseline. Cognitive ability showed significant improvements (p < 0.05). The CAT/TBARS ratio increased significantly post-training (p < 0.001) and remained elevated post-detraining. Nitric Oxide levels increased post-training (p < 0.05) and stayed higher post-detraining. The IL-10/TNF-α ratio significantly increased post-training (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Dual-task RT performed over 12 weeks improved physical function, cognitive capacity, muscular strength, oxidative stress markers, and chronic inflammation in institutionalized older adults. Furthermore, these benefits were sustained even after a period of detraining.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most existing studies focus on either the relationship between sarcopenia and depressive symptoms or sarcopenia and cognitive functions. Few studies have examined depressive symptoms and cognitive functions simultaneously. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between sarcopenia and both depressive symptoms and cognitive functions in the elderly by introducing activities of daily living to explore the mediating role of activities of daily living between sarcopenia and mental health. METHODS This study used data from the 2015 and 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, including a total of 3,552 older adults aged 60 and above. We conducted descriptive statistical analysis and correlation analysis on the data and used seemingly unrelated regression to examine the relationship between sarcopenia, depressive symptoms, and cognitive functions in older adults. Bootstrap mediation analysis was used to further explore the mediating role of activities of daily living in the relationship between sarcopenia and depressive symptoms and cognitive functions in the elderly. RESULTS After adjusting for confounding factors, sarcopenia was positively correlated with depressive symptoms (β = 0.663, p < 0.001) and negatively correlated with cognitive functions (β=-0.748, p < 0.001), indicating a negative impact of sarcopenia on mental health. Activities of daily living mediated the relationship between sarcopenia and mental health, with a stronger mediating effect between sarcopenia and depressive symptoms (18.77%, β = 0.125, 95%CI (0.035, 0.222)) than between sarcopenia and cognitive functions (12.82%, β=-0.099, 95%CI (-0.162, -0.035)). CONCLUSIONS Activities of daily living partially mediated the relationship between sarcopenia and mental health status in Chinese older adults. Interventions targeting sarcopenia and activities of daily living may be an effective way to prevent and improve the mental health status of older adults.

Abstract
Based on the relevance of an established and broad foundation of physical activity in healthcare, this position paper of the DNVF working group Physical Activity-Related Health Services research presents current conceptual approaches to physical activity-related health services in Germany and highlights the need for interprofessional and interdisciplinary approaches. Three central positions are outlined and elaborated in order to integrate the evidence on health benefits of physical activity and exercise more strongly into healthcare and to show that, against the background of the challenges in the German healthcare system, physical activity-related health services can make a cost-effective and high-quality contribution to improve healthcare. These three positions include 1) the integration of all professional groups involved in healthcare into physical activity-related health services, 2) the greater integration of physical activity professions and physical activity interventions into all healthcare contexts and 3) the systematic consideration of physical activity- and exercise-related expertise in clinical guidelines.

Abstract
Introduction Physical activity has been shown to alleviate negative emotions. We examined whether physical activity is associated with lower non-suicidal self-injurious behavior in adolescents and the mediating and chain-mediating roles of psychological capital and relative deprivation in this association. Methods 451 secondary school students (44.57% girls; ages 13-19) completed the Physical Activity Rating Scale, Adolescent Non-Suicidal Self-Injurious Behavior Scale, Psychological Capital Scale, and Adolescent Relative Deprivation Scale in their classrooms. In addition, this study used SPSS 26.0 for statistical data analysis and the SPSS macro program PROCESS 4.1 to explore the mediation role. Results Regression-based analyses showed that higher psychological capital and lower relative deprivation individually and sequentially mediated the association between physical activity and lower NSSI. Conclusion These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how and why physical activity affects adolescents' non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors. At the same time, the result may provide new insights into prevention and intervention efforts for non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors in adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the impact of multicomponent exercises on physical functions of frail elderly in communities, evaluating their effect on muscle strength, balance, and endurance, and their influence on quality of life. METHOD PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science were searched to collect relevant randomized controlled trials. The search cutoff date was January 24, 2024. Included studies met pre-specified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data analysis was performed using Revman 5.4 and Stata 15.0 software. RESULT This analysis included 19 studies. After 12 weeks, the multicomponent exercises significantly enhanced participants' performance in various physical function assessments. Specifically, in the Timed Up and Go Test, the exercise group showed a significant reduction in time [SMD = -0.86 (95 % CI: -1.40 to -0.33)]. In the Short Physical Performance Battery, interventions shorter than 6 weeks significantly increased scores [SMD = 1.01 (95 % CI: 0.64 to 1.37)], and those longer than 6 weeks showed improvements [SMD = 0.53 (95 % CI: 0.26 to 0.80)]. Muscle strength also improved, with handgrip strength and knee extensor strength enhancements [SMD = 0.93 (95 % CI: 0.27 to 1.59); SMD = 0.72 (95 % CI: 0.24 to 1.20)]. However, there was no statistically significant difference in walking speed between the groups [SMD = 0.04 (95 % CI: -0.33 to 0.40)]. CONCLUSION Although multicomponent exercises significantly improve muscle strength, balance, and endurance in frail elderly individuals, there is no conclusive evidence of their effect on enhancing quality of life or long-term health outcomes. Further research is needed to explore the specific impacts of different types and intensities of exercises on this population.

Abstract
Objective: This study examines the interactions of physical activity and personality traits in the subjective wellbeing (SWB) of older adults. Methods: 520 Scottish participants (262 male; 258 female) completed self-reported surveys measuring their level of physical activity, personality, and SWB in 2011-2013 (mean age = 76.23 ± .68) and in 2014-2016 (mean age = 79.31 ± .62). Results: While all of the Big Five personality traits predicted SWB across the 3-year period in the expected direction, neither physical activity nor its joint effect with any of the personality traits was a significant predictor of subsequent SWB. Discussion: Further research on older adults with higher variation in age, exercise level, and cultural background is needed to disentangle how physical activity and personality influence SWB.

Abstract
Institutionalized older adults are characterized by high levels of dependence and low levels of physical activity compared to those living in the community. This combination of factors leads to an increased risk of loss of muscle mass. Sarcopenia can be countered through strength training. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a strength training program on the physical fitness of institutionalized older adults. This study included a sample of 31 institutionalized older adults (20 females, 11 males) aged between 65 and 96 years (M = 81.64, SD = 8.67). Participants reported an average institutionalization duration of 2.43 years (SD = 2.20), ranging from half a year to ten years. A 12-week strength training program was implemented, with sessions held twice a week. Strength fitness was assessed through the following parameters: handgrip strength, upper limb muscular endurance, lower limb muscular endurance, agility and balance, body mass index, and waist circumference. The results demonstrated that a 12-week strength training program improved physical fitness in terms of lower limb muscular endurance, upper limb muscular endurance, agility, and dynamic balance (p < 0.05).

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the effects of comprehensive exercise training on frailty, negative emotions and physical functions of elderly patients with diabetes. Methods This is a retrospective study. A total of 140 elderly patients with T2DM in The No.2 Hospital of Baoding were selected from December, 2021 to June, 2023 and randomly divided into two groups, with 70 patients in each group. The control group was given routine nursing and routine exercise education, and the study group was additionally given comprehensive exercise training. Tilburg frailty indicator (TFI), emotional status, physical functions, grip strength, fasting blood glucose and patient satisfaction were compared and analyzed between the two groups. Results Before the intervention, TFI showed no significant differences between the two groups (p>0.05). After the intervention, physical, psychological and social frailty in the study group were significantly lower than those in the control group, with statistically significant differences (p= 0.00). SAS and SDS scores reduced significantly in the study group compared with those in the control group after the intervention, with statistically significant differences (p=0.00). After the intervention, the grip strength was significantly larger while the fasting blood glucose was significantly lower in the study group compared with those in the control group, with statistically significant differences (p=0.00). Patient satisfaction in the study group was higher than in the control group, with a statistically significant difference(p=0.03). Conclusion Comprehensive exercise training for elderly patients with diabetes is beneficial to improving their frail state, negative emotions, blood glucose levels and physical functions. It has significant clinical application value.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Regular exercise is emphasized for the improvement of functional capacity and independence of older adults. This study aimed to compare the effects of a dual-task resistance exercise program and resistance exercise on cognition, mood, depression, physical function, and activities of daily living (ADL) in older adults with cognitive impairment. METHODS A total of 44 older adults participated in the study. Participants were randomly allocated to an experimental group (n = 22) performing a dual-task resistance exercise program for cognitive function improvement and a control group (n = 22) performing a resistance exercise program. Both groups performed the exercise for 40 min per session, three times a week, for 6 weeks (18 sessions). Cognition, mood, depression, functional fitness, and ADL were quantified before and after the intervention using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), profile of mood states (POMS), geriatric depression scale (GDS), senior fitness test (SFT), and Korean version of ADL, respectively. RESULTS There was a significant time and group interaction on the MMSE (p = 0.044). There were no significant time and group interactions in the POMS, GDS, SFT, or ADL. Cognitive function (p < 0.001), mood (p < 0.001), depression (p < 0.001), functional fitness (p < 0.001), and ADL (p < 0.001) significantly improved after dual-task resistance exercise, and cognitive function (p < 0.001), mood (p < 0.001), depression (p < 0.001), functional fitness (p < 0.001), and ADL (p < 0.001) significantly improved after resistance exercise. CONCLUSIONS Dual-task resistance exercise is more effective than resistance exercise in improving cognitive function in older adults with cognitive impairment. Both dual-task resistance exercise and resistance exercise improves mood, depression, functional fitness, and ADL after the intervention. We propose using dual-task resistance exercises for cognitive and physical health management in the older adults with cognitive impairment. Abstract
To systematically evaluate the effects of quality nursing care on wound pain and anxiety in burn patients. Computerised searches of PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, Embase, Wanfang, China Biomedical Literature Database and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases randomised controlled trials (RCTs) on the application of quality nursing care to burn patients were carried out from database inception to October 2023. Literature was screened and evaluated by two researchers based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and data were extracted from the final included literature. Stata 17.0 software was employed for data analysis. Overall, 15 RCTs and 1115 burn patients were included, including 563 and 552 in the quality care and routine care groups. It was found that, compared with routine care, burn patients who implemented quality care had significantly less wound pain (SMD: -1.79, 95% CI: -2.22 to -1.36, p < 0.001), anxiety (SMD: -2.71. 95% CI: -3.49 to -1.92, p < 0.001) and depression (SMD: -1.74, 95% CI: -2.35 to -1.14, p < 0.001) levels were significantly reduced post-trauma.

Abstract
Objective To explore the mediating effects of perceived social support between frailty and self-perceived burden (SPB) in elderly patients with diabetes and to provide a theoretical basis for reducing that burden. Methods A total of 169 elderly patients with diabetes who were hospitalised in the endocrinology department of a third-class hospital in Wuxi between May 2020 and July 2022 were included in this study using the convenience sampling method. Patients were assessed by the general information questionnaire, the Chinese version of the Tilburg frailty inventory (TFI), the Self-Perceived Burden Scale (SPBS) and the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS). The SPSS 22.0 software was used for Pearson's correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. Model four of the SPSS PROCESS was used for mediating the effect analysis. Results The SPBS of elderly patients with diabetes was positively correlated with the TFI (P < 0.01) and negatively correlated with the PSSS (P < 0.01). The results of the Bootstrap test showed that the mediating effect of the PSSS on the relationship between the TFI and the SPBS in elderly patients with diabetes was 0.296 (95% CI: 0.007, 0.066), and the mesomeric effect accounted for 17.3% of the total effect. Conclusion The debilitation of elderly patients with diabetes can be reduced by decreasing their SPB through perceived social support. This can be achieved through comprehensive interventions by nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Falls represent a large percentage of hospitalized patients with trauma as they may result in head injuries. Brain injury from ground-level falls (GLFs) in patients is common and has substantial mortality. As fall prevention initiatives have been inconclusive, we changed our strategy to injury prevention. We identified a head protection device (HPD) with impact-resistant technology, which meets head impact criteria sustained in a GLF. HPDs such as helmets are ubiquitous in preventing head injuries in sports and industrial activities; yet, they have not been studied for daily activities. OBJECTIVE We investigated the usability of a novel HPD on patients with head injury in acute care and home contexts to predict future compliance. METHODS A total of 26 individuals who sustained head injuries, wore an HPD in the hospital, while ambulatory and were evaluated at baseline and 2 months post discharge. Clinical and demographic data were collected; a usability survey captured HPD domains. This user experience design revealed patient perceptions, satisfaction, and compliance. Nonparametric tests were used for intragroup comparisons (Wilcoxon signed rank test). Differences between categorical variables including sex, race, and age (age group 1: 55-77 years; age group 2: 78+ years) and compliance were tested using the chi-square test. RESULTS Of the 26 patients enrolled, 12 (46%) were female, 18 (69%) were on anticoagulants, and 25 (96%) were admitted with a head injury due to a GLF. The median age was 77 (IQR 55-92) years. After 2 months, 22 (85%) wore the device with 0 falls and no GLF hospital readmissions. Usability assessment with 26 patients revealed positive scores for the HPD post discharge regarding satisfaction (mean 4.8, SD 0.89), usability (mean 4.23, SD 0.86), effectiveness (mean 4.69, SD 0.54), and relevance (mean 4.12, SD 1.10). Nonparametric tests showed positive results with no significant differences between 2 observations. One issue emerged in the domain of aesthetics; post discharge, 8 (30%) patients had a concern about device weight. Analysis showed differences in patient compliance regarding age (χ12=4.27; P=.04) but not sex (χ12=1.58; P=.23) or race (χ12=0.75; P=.60). Age group 1 was more likely to wear the device for normal daily activities. Patients most often wore the device ambulating, and protection was identified as the primary benefit. CONCLUSIONS The HPD intervention is likely to have reasonably high compliance in a population at risk for GLFs as it was considered usable, protective, and relevant. The feasibility and wearability of the device in patients who are at risk for GLFs will inform future directions, which includes a multicenter study to evaluate device compliance and effectiveness. Our work will guide other institutions in pursuing technologies and interventions that are effective in mitigating injury in the event of a fall in this high-risk population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To propose a community-embedded follow-up management model to provide health services for elderly patients with osteoporosis who live alone. METHODS Researchers randomly selected 396 people with osteoporosis living alone from five communities in Nantong, China, for the study. These participants were randomly assigned to control and intervention groups. Twenty-four community physicians in five communities provided professional support based on a community-embedded follow-up management model. Participants completed quantitative questionnaires at baseline and after the 6-month follow-up intervention, and some participants underwent semi-structured face-to-face interviews. The primary outcome is the effectiveness of the community-embedded follow-up management model in improving the quality of life of elderly patients with osteoporosis living alone. Based on an objective quantitative assessment, the qualitative study explains and adds essential components of this community-based follow-up management model. RESULTS The quantitative study showed that scores in physical functioning, ability to perform daily activities, self-efficacy, and mental status were significantly improved in the intervention group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). The most significant improvements were found in "mental status" (p = 0.012) and "self-care skills" (p = 0.003). The qualitative study reported the essential elements of a community healthcare model for older people living alone with osteoporosis, including professional support, personalized services, social support, and empowerment. CONCLUSIONS Community-embedded follow-up management meets the need for elderly patients with osteoporosis living alone. It helps to improve health perception, promote physical and mental health, and optimize the quality of life in this population. Personalized services and professional support are two major contributing factors to effective embedded follow-up management in the community.

Abstract
Physical Activity (PA) is often associated with better overall health status, especially in older adults. Numerous pieces of evidence indicate that PA would be more beneficial when applied in conjunction with Cognitive Training (CT) either simultaneously (i.e., in Dual-Task [DT]) or sequentially. Nonetheless, the underlying mechanisms of such benefits remain elusive. To help delve deeper into their understanding, we developed a cognitive-motor DT paradigm in young adult mice and subsequently tested its effect in old age. Three groups of young adults C57BL/6J mice (3.5 months of age; n=10/group) were required. They were given cognitive tasks, either alone (Control) or in combination with PA which was administered either sequentially (SeqT group) or simultaneously (DT group). Mice were trained in a touchscreen chamber: first on a Visual Discrimination (VD) learning task, then on its Reversal (RVD) which assesses cognitive flexibility alongside procedural learning. PA was given through a homemade treadmill, designed to fit in the touchscreen chambers and set at 9 m/min. Fourteen months later, we further evaluated the effects of PA administered in both DT and SeqT groups, on the performance of the now 19-month-old mice. When compared to SeqT and control groups, DT mice significantly displayed better procedural learning in both VD and RVD tasks as young adults. In the RVD task, this enhanced performance was associated with both poorer inhibition and motor performance. Finally, in 19-month-old mice, both DT and SeqT mice displayed better motor and cognitive performances than control mice. This new cognitive-motor DT paradigm in mice yields an interesting framework that should be useful for adapting DT training in aging, including providing knowledge on the neurobiological correlates, to get the most out of its benefits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Older people's health policies suffer from many challenges in Iran. The issue is more highlighted considering the increasing rate of the older population in the country. This study aimed to explore the challenges of older people's health policies in Iran as well as make an avenue for policy responses. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was a qualitative study that was conducted using conventional content analysis in 2020-2021 in Iran. The purposive and snowball sampling methods were used for semi-structured interviews with 30 selected participants. Data were analyzed through the content analysis approach using Granheim and Landman's five-step thematic method. RESULTS The results of analyzing the data were categorized into four main themes, 16 sub-themes, and 70 final codes. The main themes were executive, policymaking, intra- and inter-sectoral, and environmental challenges. CONCLUSIONS Older people are facing challenges in receiving appropriate and timely care. In order to achieve a wide national policy dialogue for covering all older people's health needs in policy agendas and better formulation and implementation of the policies, it is necessary for Iranian health policymakers to address executive challenges and apply effective strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The global population is experiencing accelerated biopsychosocial aging. Cognitive impairment is frequently associated with functional impairment in basic and instrumental daily living activities. To maintain optimal cognitive and functional functioning, health professionals recommend that older adults participate in cognitive training. AIMS This study examines the cognitive and functional evolution of older adults with and without Intellectual Disability and the factors associated with favourable evolution following the intervention of a multicomponent programme based on the human occupational model and the person-centred care model. METHODS AND PROCEDURES 247 people participated. Descriptive and univariate analyses were performed to examine baseline data. The Wilcoxon paired samples test was used to compare cognitive and functional evolution one year after the intervention. Linear regression was used to detect factors predicting favourable evolution. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS Both populations improved cognitively. There was no change in basic activities of daily living. There was an improvement in instrumental activities of daily living in the group with Intellectual Disability. None of the variables collected was a predictor of greater improvement. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS This study demonstrated that older people with Intellectual Disability who have supports to cope with this life stage can improve their cognitive and functional abilities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is mounting evidence that regular physical activity is an important prerequisite for healthy cognitive aging. Consequently, the finding that almost one-third of the adult population does not reach the recommended level of regular physical activity calls for further public health actions. In this context, digital and home-based physical training interventions might be a promising alternative to center-based intervention programs. Thus, this systematic review aimed to summarize the current state of the literature on the effects of digital and home-based physical training interventions on adult cognitive performance. METHODS In this pre-registered systematic review (PROSPERO; ID: CRD42022320031), 5 electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, PsycInfo, SPORTDiscus, and Cochrane Library) were searched by 2 independent researchers (FH and PT) to identify eligible studies investigating the effects of digital and home-based physical training interventions on cognitive performance in adults. The systematic literature search yielded 8258 records (extra 17 records from other sources), of which 27 controlled trials were considered relevant. Two reviewers (FH and PT) independently extracted data and assessed the risk of bias using a modified version of the Tool for the assEssment of Study qualiTy and reporting in EXercise (TESTEX scale). RESULTS Of the 27 reviewed studies, 15 reported positive effects on cognitive and motor-cognitive outcomes (i.e., performance improvements in measures of executive functions, working memory, and choice stepping reaction test), and a considerable heterogeneity concerning study-related, population-related, and intervention-related characteristics was noticed. A more detailed analysis suggests that, in particular, interventions using online classes and technology-based exercise devices (i.e., step-based exergames) can improve cognitive performance in healthy older adults. Approximately one-half of the reviewed studies were rated as having a high risk of bias with respect to completion adherence (≤85%) and monitoring of the level of regular physical activity in the control group. CONCLUSION The current state of evidence concerning the effectiveness of digital and home-based physical training interventions is mixed overall, though there is limited evidence that specific types of digital and home-based physical training interventions (e.g., online classes and step-based exergames) can be an effective strategy for improving cognitive performance in older adults. However, due to the limited number of available studies, future high-quality studies are needed to buttress this assumption empirically and to allow for more solid and nuanced conclusions.

Abstract
Purpose The present study aims to examine the disparate effects of health behavior models, namely exercise self-efficacy (ESE), health belief model (HBM), and planned behavior theory (PBT), applied to clarify the degree of regular exercise among workers in Taiwan. Methods A cross-sectional research design was adopted. A questionnaire was distributed to obtain information pertaining to regular exercise level, demographic characteristics, and the scores of ESE, HBM, and PBT. In total, 400 full-time workers voluntarily participated in this study. Results The results showed that only 20.5% of the participants exercised regularly, 37.3% exercised irregularly, and 42.3% did not exercise currently. "Perceived benefits" and "perceived barriers" pertaining to HBM; "attitude" and "perceived behavioral control" pertaining to PBT; and ESE were associated with regular exercise level in the multiple linear regression analyses of each health behavior model. When all three models were considered simultaneously, ESE provided the greatest explanation of the variances for regular exercise levels. PBT total made a smaller contribution in the prediction of regular exercise level, while the effect of HBM did not show statistical significance. In order to explore the practicality of moving beyond theoretical models and focusing on the components across health behavior models to enhance workers' exercise behavior, the components showing statistical significance in separate analysis were put into the multiple linear regression simultaneously. The results showed that ESE, perceived barriers of health behavior, attitude, and perceived behavioral control were significantly associated with regular exercise level. Conclusion A low percentage of workers exercising regularly should be a notable issue for workplace health promotion. Neither utilizing cues to exercise nor advertising health threats of physical inactivity is sufficient to enable workers to exercise regularly. Enhancing workers' ESE and behavior control and removing the exercise barriers would constitute efficient strategies for maintaining the exercise habit of workers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the perceptions of institutionalised older people about the professionals and institutions regarding exercise programs in long-term care institutions DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A qualitative study was carried out using focus group discussions. Forty-seven institutionalised participants (≥ 65 years old) with a score of > 23 in the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) were recruited. RESULTS Most participants believed that the frequency of the exercise sessions could be increased by enhancing the number of staff assisting them and by adapting the facilities to their needs. They also suggested using outdoor spaces and avoiding childish activities and treatment. Participants' beliefs were grouped into three major themes (i) Perceptions about the health professionals delivering the exercise programs (ii) Perceptions about the institution or centre regarding exercise programs; (iii) Perceptions about the exercise programs. CONCLUSION Participants proposed certain changes that could take place in the institutions to promote engagement with exercise programs: tailored exercise programs, avoiding puerile treatment, increasing the number of staff members, and the creation of well-equipped spaces to perform the exercise. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS Professionals should spend time designing tailored exercise programs and avoid puerile treatment. Institutions must review the need for spaces and the personnel assigned.

Abstract
Objectives To explore and analyze the influencing factors of depression in older adults living at home, so as to propose suggestions for improving the quality of older adults living at home. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study on 498 older adults living at home based on questionnaire survey on the general information, daily living ability, health status, and care perception (including self-care, care for cohabitants, and care for non-cohabitants) of older adults living at home, as well as their willingness to help each other, and analyzed the influencing factors of depression among older adults living at home. Results The results showed a willingness to help older adults, self-care, and total activities of daily living (ADL), health status was an influential factor for depression in older adults (p < 0.05). Conclusion It aims to take targeted measures, such as encouraging older adults at home to actively participate in mutual assistance activities for older adults and care for themselves, so as to prevent and reduce the occurrence of depression in older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Long-term nursing home (NH) care helps NH residents with their daily activities and improves their quality of life, but negatively affects their independent physical activities and increases the risk of dangerous events. Dangerous events in the elderly usually occur in the conversion of walking periods when forward striding has already happened, but the body has not yet entered a completely steady walking. OBJECTIVES Compare the gait characteristics in Chinese long-term NH residents and community-living elderly during the walking Transitional Period (TP) and Stabilization Period (SP). METHODS 32 long-term NH residents and 33 age- and sex-matched community-living elderly were recruited. The 30-Second Chair Stand Test (30-s CST), Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT), and Modified Falls Efficacy Scale (MFES) were used to assess their body function. The Xsens MVN BIOMECH system was used to collect and analyze the gait parameters of participants. RESULTS Compared to community-living elderly, NH residents had fewer numbers of 30-s CST, took more time to complete TUGT, and lower MEFS scores. NH residents showed slower gait speed (P < 0.001), less peak hip flexion (P = 0.022) and extension (P = 0.003), knee internal rotation (P = 0.023), and ankle plantarflexion (P = 0.001) and internal rotation (P = 0.007) angles during walking. When walking progressed from TP to SP, NH residents showed increased ankle dorsiflexion (P < 0.001), decreased hip internal rotation (P < 0.001), and community-living elderly had increased hip extension (P = 0.005) angles. CONCLUSIONS Chinese long-term NH residents had reduced lower extremities strength and postural balance, and higher fear of falling compared to community-living elderly. Their walking performance also showed high fall risk. Besides, long-term NH residents adopted a distal strategy to propel the body forward, which may be a compensatory measure to compensate for inadequate proximal joint control from forward walking to stable walking, and long-term NH residents have reduced postural stability during this process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The demand for nursing care is rising in the long-term care setting. Nurse staffing is a crucial measure linked to health care quality measure outcomes. PURPOSE To assess for associations between nursing hours per patient day (NHPPD) and outcome measures in the Veterans Health Administration Community Living Centers. METHODS A retrospective data review of NHPPD and quality measures for 134 community living centers was conducted. Linear regression was used to assess for linear associations between average total NHPPD and 6 quality measures. RESULTS A significant linear association was found between average total NHPPD and falls with major injury ( P = .02) and help with activities of daily living ( P = .01). No associations were found between nurse staffing and 4 other quality measures. CONCLUSIONS This study adds to the body of literature regarding the impact of nurse staffing on quality measures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interdependencies of health, fitness, cognition, and emotion can promote or inhibit mobility. This study aimed to analyse pathways and interactions between individual subjective and objective physical performance, cognition, and emotions with activities of daily living (ADLs) as mobility indicators in multimorbid nursing home residents. METHODS The study included n = 448 (77.1% females, age = 84.1 ± 7.8 years) nursing home residents. To describe the participant's demographics, frailty, number of falls, and participating institutions' socioeconomic status (SES) were assessed. ADLs were measured with the Barthel Index (BI; dependent variable). Independent variables included objective physical performance, subjective physical performance, cognition, and emotions. A structural equation model (SEM) with maximum likelihood estimation was conducted with AMOS. Direct and indirect effects were estimated using standardized coefficients (significance level of 0.05). RESULTS Indices showed (Chi2(148) = 217, PCMIN/DF = 1.47; p < .001; Comparative Fit Index = .940; Tucker Lewes Index = .902, RMSEA = .033) that the model fitted the data adequately. While there was no direct association between emotions, subjective physical performance, and ADLs, objective physical performance and cognition predicted higher ADLs (p < .01). Emotions had a strong relationship with subjective physical performance, and cognition had a moderate relationship with objective physical performance. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Objective performance and cognition predicted higher functional status, as expressed by higher BI scores. ADLs, such as mobility, dressing, or handling tasks, require motor and cognitive performance. Subjective performance is an important predictor of ADLs and is only partly explained by objective performance, but to a large extent also by emotions. Therefore, future interventions for nursing home residents should take a holistic approach that focuses not only on promoting objective physical and cognitive performance but also on emotions and perceived physical performance. Abstract
AIM This study aimed to verify the impact of low body mass index (BMI) on mortality in nursing home residents undergoing hemodialysis and to clarify other associated mortality risk factors. METHODS This retrospective study included patients admitted to a nursing home affiliated with Nagasaki Renal Center between April 2014 and March 2022. Medical data were collected on admission, and participants were divided into low and high BMI groups according to their median BMI values. The patients were followed up until March 2023. The association between survival and patient history was also analyzed. RESULTS Of the 106 patients (average age, 81.3 ± 7.9 years; male, 36.8%; median dialysis vintage, 32.5 [interquartile range (IQR), 13.8-79.3] months), 52 and 54 were classified into the low (median < 18.4 kg/m2 ) and high (≥18.4 kg/m2 ) BMI groups, respectively. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards analysis indicated that BMI (hazard ratio, 0.87; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.82-0.94; P < 0.001) was closely associated with survival. Multivariable logistic regression revealed that dementia was associated with low BMI (odds ratio: 2.89, 95% CI: 1.07-7.83, P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS Low BMI was an important factor contributing to poor patient survival. Dementia was associated with low BMI. Therefore, the management of both nutrition and dementia is essential for nursing home residents undergoing hemodialysis. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2023; 23: 660-664.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging is a degenerative process that is associated with an increased risk of diseases. Intermittent hypoxia has been investigated in reference to performance and health-related functions enhancement. This systematic review aimed to summarize the effect of either passive or active intermittent normobaric hypoxic interventions compared with normoxia on health-related outcomes in healthy older adults. METHODS Relevant studies were searched from PubMed and Web of Science databases in accordance with PRISMA guidelines (since their inceptions up until August 9, 2022) using the following inclusion criteria: (1) randomized controlled trials, clinical trials and pilot studies; (2) Studies involving humans aged > 50 years old and without any chronic diseases diagnosed; (3) interventions based on in vivo intermittent systemic normobaric hypoxia exposure; (4) articles focusing on the analysis of health-related outcomes (body composition, metabolic, bone, cardiovascular, functional fitness or quality of life). Cochrane Collaboration recommendations were used to assess the risk of bias. RESULTS From 509 articles initially found, 17 studies were included. All interventions were performed in moderate normobaric hypoxia, with three studies using passive exposure, and the others combining intermittent hypoxia with training protocols (i.e., using resistance-, whole body vibration- or aerobic-based exercise). CONCLUSIONS Computed results indicate a limited effect of passive/active intermittent hypoxia (ranging 4-24 weeks, 2-4 days/week, 16-120 min/session, 13-16% of fraction of inspired oxygen or 75-85% of peripheral oxygen saturation) compared to similar intervention in normoxia on body composition, functional fitness, cardiovascular and bone health in healthy older (50-75 years old) adults. Only in specific settings (i.e., intermediate- or long-term interventions with high intensity/volume training sessions repeated at least 3 days per week), may intermittent hypoxia elicit beneficial effects. Abstract
Changes in the composition of the body mass of functionally limited older patients may contribute to a decrease in functional fitness and the development of chronic diseases. This research aimed to assess the differences in anthropometric parameters and physical fitness of older patients, over the age of 65, in a 12-week clinical intervention study. Method: The study participants were nursing home inhabitants aged 65-85 who were functionally limited. Persons meeting the inclusion criteria were assigned to one of the three groups: Group 1-basic exercises/BE group (n = 56); Group 2-physical exercises with elements of dancing/PED group (n = 57); Group 3-control group/CO group (n = 56) routine care. The data were collected at the beginning of the study and at the 12-week mark. The outcome was observed for hand grip strength (HGS), arm curl test (ACT), Barthel Index (BI), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), triceps skin fold (TSF), waist-to-hip-ratio (WHR), and arm muscle area (AMA). Results: The study included 98 women and 71 men. The average age of the participants was 74.40 years. The analysis of the effects of the 12-week exercise program showed the greatest changes in HGS, ACT, and BI in the exercise groups, especially in the PED group compared to the BE group. Statistically significant differences in the examined parameters of the PED vs. BE vs. CO groups were demonstrated in favour of the exercising groups. In conclusion, a 12-week program of group physical exercises, both PED and BE, improves physical fitness indicators and anthropometric indicators.

Abstract
Older people in nursing homes are at a high risk of being infected by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). They also experienced nursing home lockdowns that harm their psychological wellbeing. Better support for this vulnerable population requires understanding their perceptions of challenges and coping strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic. A qualitative descriptive study was conducted using semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis approach was used to analyze the data. Participants were recruited from six nursing homes in three cities in Hunan Province, China. Fourteen nursing home residents participated in the study. Four themes were identified from interviews and described as: mental stress and coping strategies, self-regulation to respond to lockdown, the lack of social connection and coping strategies, and the need for medical care services and coping strategies. This study revealed that nursing home residents perceived stress during the nursing home lockdown, but they reported initiating activities to maintain health and connections with their families and peers. Resilience improvement interventions are necessary to enable residents' autonomy and develop their resilience in coping with difficulties and hardship during crises. The findings also indicate that a supportive environment with interactions from families, peers, and staffs played a key role in enabling residents' positive health and wellbeing during the lockdown.

Abstract
Background Currently, most Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) programs work with conventional physical training, using resources that are not available in public health in Brazil. Multicomponent physical training is a strategy that uses few resources and can reach a larger portion of the population. Objective To investigate the effectiveness and safety of multicomponent physical training on physical-functional performance in patients with COPD. Design Protocol for a randomized clinical trial with 2 groups in parallel (1:1). Setting University-based, outpatient, physiotherapy clinic. Participants 64 patients aged ⩾50 years, clinical-functional diagnosis of COPD, GOLD II and III criteria will participate in the study. Intervention Participants will be randomly allocated into 2 groups: Multicomponent Physical Training-MPT (n = 32): aerobic, strength, balance and flexibility exercises performed in a circuit training format, or Conventional Physical Training-CPT (n = 32): aerobic and strength training. The interventions will be carried out twice a week, for 8 weeks and supervised by the same physiotherapist. Measurements The 3 primary outcomes are the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), the 6-Minute Step Test (6MST) and VO2 consumption as measured during the 6MWT. Secondary outcomes will be exercise capacity, level of physical activity in daily life, peripheral muscle strength, functional status, dyspnea, fatigue and quality of life. Safety will be assessed by recording adverse effects. These outcomes will be evaluated before and after the intervention and the evaluator will be blind. Limitations It will not be possible to perform the blinding of the physiotherapist who will supervise the interventions. Conclusions This study is expected to demonstrate that MPT using simple resources is an effective and safe intervention for the improvement of the aforementioned outcomes and, in addition, to broaden the horizon of research in relation to new methods of physical rehabilitation for patients with COPD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The World Health Organisation recently defined the construct of intrinsic capacity (IC), a function-based marker of older adult's health encompassing all mental and physical capacities of the individual. Multicomponent physical exercise (MCE) is a potential intervention capable to maintain/increase IC at older age; however, evidence is scarce on the effects of MCE on IC in cognitively impaired pre-frail/frail older adults. METHODS Secondary analyses of a randomised clinical trial. One hundred and eighty-eight older outpatients (age = 84.06 ± 4.77, 70.2% women) presenting with pre-frailty/frailty (according to Fried Criteria) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI)/mild dementia were recruited in the Geriatric clinics of three tertiary hospitals in Spain. Subjects were randomised to participate in the 12-week home-based individualised Vivifrail MCE or usual care. An IC index was created based on the z-score of the locomotion (Short Physical Performance Battery), cognitive (Montreal Cognitive Assessment), psychology (15-item Geriatric Depression Scale Yesavage) and vitality (handgrip strength) domains. RESULTS After the 3-month intervention, linear mixed models showed significant between-group differences in the evolution of the IC composite score (β=0.48; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.24, 0.74; P < 0.001), IC Locomotion (β = 0.42; 95% CI = 0.10, 0.74; P < 0.001), IC Cognition (β = 0.45; 95% CI = 0.03, 0.87; P < 0.05) and IC Vitality domains (β = 0.50; 95% CI = 0.25, 0.74 at 3-month) favouring the MCE group. CONCLUSIONS The 12-week Vivifrail multicomponent exercise program is an effective strategy to enhance IC, especially in terms of locomotion, cognition and vitality IC domains in community-dwelling older adults with pre-frailty/frailty and MCI/mild dementia, compared to usual care.

Abstract
Background and Objectives Current definitions of older adults' mobility do not cover the full range of influencing factors and do not consider nursing home residents. The present study reports expert ratings from a Delphi study regarding factors influencing the mobility of long-term nursing home residents. Research Design and Methods We invited 129 professionals with expertise in a field relevant to research on mobility in older adults such as health care, medicine, or human movement science to participate in a Delphi study comprising 3 rounds of online questionnaires. Up to 40 experts participated in each round. In the first round, we used open-ended questions to solicit possible definitions, contextual factors, and assessment tools. In the second round, the participants used Likert scales (1-10) to rate their suitability. In the final round, we presented a definition based on consensus as well as the top-rated contextual factors and assessment tools from the first 2 rounds for a final rating of agreement. Results The experts showed broad agreement on the final version of the mobility definition, with 8.9 ± 1.4 (mean ± standard deviation) out of 10 points. The experts also showed broad consensus on the selected contextual factors, with 8.4 ± 1.8 points to 8.9 ± 1.2 points (out of 10 points). This was also the case for the top 3 assessment tools selected from results of previous rounds, which showed an agreement of 7 or more points (out of 10 points) by 81.6% to 100% of all experts in the different categories. Discussion and Implications Given that an interdisciplinary group of experts considered various hitherto neglected contextual factors as relevant, the Delphi survey and its results imply the need for an updated interdisciplinary and holistic understanding of mobility in nursing home residents and can provide a basis for putting it into practice.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the major neurodegenerative diseases and the most common form of dementia. Characterized by the loss of learning, memory, problem-solving, language, and other thinking abilities, AD exerts a detrimental effect on both patients' and families' quality of life. Although there have been significant advances in understanding the mechanism underlying the pathogenesis and progression of AD, there is no cure for AD. The failure of numerous molecular targeted pharmacologic clinical trials leads to an emerging research shift toward non-invasive therapies, especially multiple targeted non-invasive treatments. In this paper, we reviewed the advances of the most widely studied non-invasive therapies, including photobiomodulation (PBM), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and exercise therapy. Firstly, we reviewed the pathological changes of AD and the challenges for AD studies. We then introduced these non-invasive therapies and discussed the factors that may affect the effects of these therapies. Additionally, we review the effects of these therapies and the possible mechanisms underlying these effects. Finally, we summarized the challenges of the non-invasive treatments in future AD studies and clinical applications. We concluded that it would be critical to understand the exact underlying mechanisms and find the optimal treatment parameters to improve the translational value of these non-invasive therapies. Moreover, the combined use of non-invasive treatments is also a promising research direction for future studies and sheds light on the future treatment or prevention of AD.

Abstract
The beneficial effects of exercise on human brain function have been demonstrated in previous studies. Myokines secreted by muscle have attracted increasing attention because of their bridging role between exercise and brain health. Regulated by PPARγ coactivator 1α, fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5 releases irisin after proteolytic cleavage. Irisin, a type of myokine, is secreted during exercise, which induces white adipose tissue browning and relates to energy metabolism. Recently, irisin has been shown to exert a protective effect on the central nervous system. Irisin secretion triggers an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels in the hippocampus, contributing to the amelioration of cognition impairments. Irisin also plays an important role in the survival, differentiation, growth, and development of neurons. This review summarizes the role of irisin in neurodegenerative diseases and other neurological disorders. As a novel positive mediator of exercise in the brain, irisin may effectively prevent or decelerate the progress of neurodegenerative diseases in models and also improve cognitive functions. We place emphasis herein on the potential of irisin for prevention rather than treatment in neurodegenerative diseases. In ischemic diseases, irisin can alleviate the pathophysiological processes associated with stroke. Meanwhile, irisin has anxiolytic and antidepressant effects. The potential therapeutic effects of irisin in epilepsy and pain have been initially revealed. Due to the pleiotropic and beneficial properties of irisin, the possibility of irisin treating other neurological diseases could be gradually explored in the future.

Abstract
Some nursing homes for the elderly provide holistic care that integrates several interventions, including physical exercise. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize the effects of physical exercise or multicomponent exercise programs on the mental health (wellbeing, anxiety and depression) and cognitive functions of older adults with/without dementia who live in a nursing home and do/do not require wheelchair assistance. To this end, PubMed, PsycInfo and Web of Science are using to identify clinical trials and randomized controlled studies conducted during the period January 2011 to December 2021 to examine the progression of research in this field over the past ten years. In total, 2597 articles are identifying and 21 are including in the systematic review. After selecting articles according to the PRISMA standards, the data extraction and methodological quality assessment of the eligible studies are performing individually by two reviewers and then pooled together. The synthesis of the studies shows that physical exercise or multicomponent exercise programs have a beneficial effect on mental health and cognitive functions. However, this effect is more common among older adults without dementia, compared to their counterparts who have dementia or use wheelchairs. The explanatory mechanisms, lack of benefits from physical exercise and the need to standardize methods are discussing in this regard. Finally, future studies must examine the effects of an innovative and adaptive physical activity program on the mental health and cognitive functions of older adults living in nursing homes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The frail elderly have an increased risk of frailty because of reduced physical activity, cognitive ability and quality of life. This study aims to evaluate the effects of integrated exercise intervention on the attenuation of frailty in elderly nursing home residents. DESIGN This study was a cluster randomized controlled trial. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS 146 elderly frailty people from 8 elderly nursing homes in Harbin, China, were randomly assigned into the intervention group and control group after obtaining their informed consent. INTERVENTION The intervention group performed integrated exercise interventions for 12 months, while the control group only continued with their daily activities. MEASUREMENTS Sociodemographic, health-related data, frailty levels, gait parameters, cognition, and quality of life were evaluated. RESULTS The mean age of participants was 80.74± 2.89 years, and 70.37% (n=95) were female. The Difference-in-difference regression showed that, compared with the control group, phenotypic frailty score (β3 =-1.40, p < 0.001) and stride time (β3 = -0.38, p <0.001) decreased significantly in the intervention group, stride velocity (β3 = 0.24, p < 0.001), step length (β3 = 0.08, p <0.001), cadence (β3 = 17.79, p < 0.001), MMSE total score (β3 = 1.90, p < 0.001) and QOL total score (β3 = 11.84, p < 0.001) increased significantly in the intervention group. CONCLUSION The integrated exercise intervention can effectively improve the attenuation of frailty, gait parameters, cognitive function, and quality of life in elderly nursing homes. We can use the findings of this study as a reference for the design of activities for the elderly nursing home residents, to provide them with appropriate exercises, improve their physical functions, and improve or delay their frailty level, which is principally important for developing countries in east Asia where rehabilitation resources are generally scarce.

Abstract
Neurocognitive impairment is a group of clinical syndromes characterized by impaired cognitive function and decreased motor ability. Non-pharmacological interventions such as physical exercise have advantages in the treatment of patients with neurocognitive impairment. Multicomponent exercise is a combination of various physical exercises, including strength training, endurance training, balance training and flexibility training, that can improve gait, balance and cardiopulmonary function by increasing muscle mass, strength and endurance in people with neurocognitive impairment, while also reducing the risk of falls in elders. This article reviews the benefits of multicomponent exercise for patients with neurocognitive impairment and its evaluation methods; also describes 4 intervention programs and their clinical application, to provide evidence for clinical practice and promote the application of multicomponent exercise in patients with neurocognitive impairment.

Abstract
(1) Background: The regular practice of dancing benefits the physical condition, improving quality of life and minimising the adverse effects of ageing. Therefore, this review aims to evaluate the impact of dance programmes by quantifying different physical parameters of the lower body in older adults. (2) Methods: A systematic qualitative review in the English language (PubMed, Scopus, OvidSP, Cochrane and PEDro database) until mid-2020 considering the PRISMA guidelines and the PEDro quality criteria considering the following parameters of gait: stride length and width, speed. Physical parameters: flexion and dorsiflexion joint, muscle strength and range of motion were carried out. (3) Results: 9 studies with a population of 544 subjects from 5 continents and 6 types of dances were taken into account. The improvement of some parameters over others depended on the type of dance and the movements generated, having moderate positive effects on strength, agility, mobility and balance. (4) Conclusions: there is a general improvement in the functional capacity of the elderly through the practice of ballroom dancing, with specific improvement of each parameter depending on the type of dance.

Abstract
This pilot trial explored the feasibility of group-based Otago exercise program (OEP) and its impact on fear of falling (FOF) and physical function among Chinese older adults living in nursing homes. The intervention group received group-based OEP for 12 weeks, while the control group received routine care. The modified Survey of Activities and Fear of Falling in the Elderly (mSAFFE), timed Up and Go test (TUG), four-stage Balance test (FSBT), and 30 seconds sit-to-stand test (30s-SST) were used. After twelve weeks, we found that the intervention group had better outcomes than the control group in mSAFFE, TUG, FSBT and 30s-SST (p<0.05). Also, we compared the pretest-posttest results within the two groups, respectively. We found that, within the intervention group, the outcomes of mSAFFE, TUG, FSBT, and 30s-SST become significantly better after twelve weeks, but within the control group, the outcomes of TUG, FSBT, and 30s-SST become significantly worse. Our findings demonstrated that a group-based OEP was feasible and acceptability among Chinese older adults living in nursing homes and the group-based OEP could improve FOF and physical function among those older adults.

Abstract
The level of exercise among older adults is low, particularly among those living in health-care institutions. To gain insight into the perceptions of institutionalized older adults towards the exercise programs developed in long-term care institutions and to identify their wishes and needs regarding these programs, we conducted a qualitative study using focus group discussions. Thirty-six institutionalized participants (≥ 65 years) were recruited. Six common themes emerged: participants' attitudes and motivations towards the exercise programs, self-perceived health, knowledge of the concept of physical exercise, perceived effects of the exercise programs, and wishes or expectations for the exercise programs. The main wishes were to increase frequency of exercise sessions, to exercise outdoor and to increase walking times. The results suggest the need for changes in the development of exercise programs, including changes in the frequency, performance environment and types of exercises performed.

Abstract
Background: The promotion of healthy aging is one of the major challenges for healthcare systems in current times. The present study investigates the effects of a standardized physical activity intervention for older adults on cognitive capacity, self-reported health, fear of falls, balance, leg strength and gait under consideration of movement biography, sleep duration, and current activity behavior. Methods: This single-blinded, randomized controlled trial included 49 community-dwelling older adults (36 women; 82.9 ± 4.5 years of age (Mean [M] ± SD); intervention group = 25; control group = 24). Movement biography, sleep duration, cognitive capacity, self-reported health status, and fear of falls were assessed by means of questionnaires. Leg strength, gait, and current activity levels were captured using a pressure plate, accelerometers, and conducting the functional-reach and chair-rising-test. The multicomponent intervention took place twice a week for 45 min and lasted 16 weeks. Sub-cohorts of different sleep duration were formed to distinguish between intervention effects and benefits of healthy sleep durations. Change scores were evaluated in univariate analyses of covariances (ANCOVAs) between groups and sub-cohorts of different sleep duration in both groups. Changes in cognitive capacity, self-reported health, fear of falls, balance, leg strength, and gait were investigated using the respective baseline values, movement biography, and current activity levels as covariates. Analysis was by intention-to-treat (ITT). Results: We found sub-cohort differences in cognitive capacity change scores [F (3,48) = 5.498, p = 0.003, ηp 2 = 0.287]. Effects on fear of falls [F (1,48) = 12.961, p = 0.001, ηp 2 = 0.240] and balance change scores F (1,48) = 4.521, p = 0.040, ηp 2 = (0.099) were modified by the level of current activity. Effects on gait cadence were modified by the movement biography [F (1,48) = 4.545; p = 0.039, ηp 2 = 0.100]. Conclusions: Unlike for functional outcomes, our multicomponent intervention in combination with adequate sleep duration appears to provide combinable beneficial effects for cognitive capacity in older adults. Trainability of gait, fear of falls, and flexibility seems to be affected by movement biography and current physical activity levels. Trial registration: This study was registered at the DRKS (German Clinical Trials Register) on November 11, 2020 with the corresponding trial number: DRKS00020472.

Abstract
AIM As the older adult population increases globally, it is important for local governments to measure their health and well-being consistently to effectively support this group. Because definitions of subjective well-being - such as happiness, life satisfaction and subjective health - overlap, it is worth considering which single-item indicator local governments can rely on to measure individual well-being. This study, therefore, explored the correlation between three single-item questionnaires on happiness, life satisfaction and subjective health used in government surveys, and established psychometric scales of happiness, life satisfaction and quality of life, and analyzed which of the three single-item indicators most effectively captured the target well-being. METHODS Randomly selected people aged ≥65 years in urban and rural areas (n = 1440) answered the questions on the Happiness Scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale and the Quality of Life scale, and the three single-item questionnaires (happiness, life satisfaction and subjective health). We analyzed the data using correlation and multiple regression analyses. RESULTS The results showed a high positive correlation between the scales and the single-item questionnaires. The single-item life satisfaction and subjective health questionnaires were significantly correlated with all the three scales. Although there was not much difference in the adjusted R2 values between putting three items jointly and separately, the value of single-item life satisfaction was the best and the subjective health was the second best. CONCLUSION The results showed that the single-item life satisfaction and subjective health effectively captured the target well-being; these could be the appropriate indicators for a potential optimal index. Background and objectives
To achieve independence in activities of daily living, a certain level of functional ability is necessary. The instrumented Timed Up and Go (iTUG) test provides guidance for appropriate interventions, for example, when considering the subphases within the TUG. Therefore, we evaluated the iTUG as a tool to measure the effects of a multicomponent exercise intervention on the iTUG subphases in nursing home residents.
Methods
Fifty long-term nursing home residents (34 women, 82.7 ± 6.46 [65–91] years; 16 men, 78.6 ± 7.0 [62–90] years) performed the iTUG test before and after a 16-week intervention period (2 × 45–60 min/week). According to the attendance rates, participants were divided into three groups.
Results
The total iTUG duration decreased from baseline to posttest, F(2,46) = 3.50, p = 0.038, η2p = 0.132. We observed significant correlations between the attendance rates and the total iTUG duration (r(50) = 0.328, p = 0.010). However, we did not observe significant group × time interaction effects in the subphases. The Barthel Index moderated the effect between attendance rate and the total duration of the iTUG test, ΔR2 = 8.34%, F(1,44) = 4.69, p = 0.036, 95% CI [0.001, 0.027].
Conclusions
We confirmed the effectiveness of the iTUG as a tool to measure exercise intervention effects in nursing home residents, especially when participants exhibit high attendance rates. That said, mobility needs to be considered in a more differentiated way, taking into account parameters in the subphases to detect changes more sensitively and to derive recommendations in a more individualized way.

Abstract
A sedentary lifestyle in nursing home residents is often accompanied with reduced life space mobility and in turn affects satisfaction with life. One of the reasons for this may be limited ability to find one’s way around the care facility and its environment. However, spatial orientation exercises might reduce these problems if they are integrated into an adequate cognitive-motor training. Therefore, we integrated six novel and target group-specific spatial orientation exercises into an established multicomponent cognitive-motor group training for nursing home residents and evaluated its feasibility. Forty nursing home residents (mean age: 87.3 ± 7 years) participated in the spatial orientation cognitive motor training (45–60 min, twice a week over a period of 12 weeks). The main outcomes included the feasibility criteria (adherence, completion time, acceptance, instructions, motor performance, materials/set up, complexity) and first measurements of mobility and satisfaction with life (SPPB [Short Physical Performance Battery], SWLS [Satisfaction with Life Scale]). Adherence increased over time. The increase was associated with the adaptions and modifications of the spatial orientation exercises that were made to meet the participants’ requirements. A positive trend was discerned for mobility and life satisfaction, comparing pre- and posttraining data. In summary, the feasibility analysis revealed that future interventions should consider that (a) instructions of demanding spatial tasks should be accompanied by an example task, (b) trainers should be encouraged to adjust task complexity and materials on an individual basis, (c) acceptance of the training should be promoted among nursing staff, and (d) surroundings with as little disturbance as possible should be selected for training.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Associations between age, concerns or history of falling, and various gait parameters are evident. Limited research, however, exists on how such variables moderate the age-related decline in gait characteristics. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the moderating effects of concerns of falling (formerly referred to as fear of falling), history of falls & diseases, and sociodemographic characteristics on changes in gait characteristics with increasing age in the elderly. METHODS In this individual participant level data re-analysis, data from 198 participants (n = 125 females) from 60 to 94 years of age were analysed (mean 73.9, standard deviation 7.7 years). Dependent variables were major spatiotemporal gait characteristics, assessed using a capacitive force measurement platform (zebris FDM-T). Age (independent variable) and the moderating variables concerns of falling (FES-I), gender/sex, history of falls and fall-related medical records, number of drugs daily taken, and body mass index were used in the statistical analysis. Hierarchical linear mixed moderation models (multilevel analysis) with stepwise (forward) modelling were performed. RESULTS Decreases of gait speed (estimate = -.03, equals a decrease of 0.03 m/s per year of ageing), absolute (- 1.4) and gait speed-normalized (-.52) stride length, step width (-.08), as well as increases in speed normalized cadence (.65) and gait speed variability (.15) are all age-related (each p < .05). Overall and specific situation-related concerns of falling (estimates: -.0012 to -.07) were significant moderators. History of potentially gait- and/or falls-affecting diseases accelerated the age-related decline in gait speed (-.002) and its variability (.03). History of falls was, although non-significant, a relevant moderator (in view of increasing the model fit) for cadence (.058) and gait speed (-.0027). Sociodemographics and anthropometrics showed further moderating effects (sex moderated the ageing effect on stride length, .08; height moderated the effect on the normalised stride length, .26; BMI moderated the effects on step width, .003). . CONCLUSION Age-related decline in spatiotemporal gait characteristics is moderated by concerns of falling, (non-significantly) by history of falls, significantly by history of diseases, and sociodemographic characteristics in 60-94 years old adults. Knowing the interactive contributions to gait impairments could be helpful for tailoring interventions for the prevention of falls. TRIAL REGISTRATION Re-analysis of [21-24].
