Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly heterogeneous and complex cancer influenced by both the tumor microenvironment and multi-level regulation of the nervous system. Increasing evidence highlights critical roles of the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS) in modulating HCC progression. Psychological stress and emotional disturbances, representing CNS dysregulation, directly accelerate tumor growth, metastasis, and impair anti-tumor immunity in HCC. PNS involvement, particularly autonomic innervation, extensively reshapes the hepatic tumor microenvironment. Specifically, sympathetic activation promotes immune suppression, tumor cell proliferation, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and cancer stemness via β-adrenergic signaling and hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α) stabilization, whereas parasympathetic signals generally exert anti-inflammatory and tumor-suppressive effects mediated by acetylcholine. Neurotransmitters including epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, and acetylcholine precisely regulate critical pathways such as AKT/mTOR, ERK, and NF-κB, thereby driving malignant cell behaviors, immune evasion, and chemoresistance. Neuro-targeted pharmacological interventions (e.g., SSRIs, β-blockers, dopamine antagonists) and behavioral therapies have shown efficacy in preclinical studies, underscoring their therapeutic potential. Additionally, neural-associated biomarkers like NEDD9, CNTN1, and nerve growth factor (NGF) exhibit prognostic significance, supporting their future clinical application. By systematically integrating neuroscience with oncology, this review identifies innovative neural-based therapeutic strategies, highlights key mechanistic insights, and outlines promising directions for future research and personalized clinical management of HCC.

Abstract
This manuscript comments on the article published in a recent issue of World Journal of Psychology. We emphasize the potential of combining Epirubicin (EPI) chemotherapy with mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) to optimize cancer care for urinary system tumors. The long-term use EPI is associated with depression and in short-term has shown side effects such as fatigue, nausea, and occasional abdominal pain, which can impact patient adherence. MBIs address the psychological burdens, such as depression and anxiety, that accompany cancer treatment, enhancing emotional well-being, immune function, and treatment adherence. Integration of MBIs alongside EPI offers improved clinical outcomes by lowering stress and reducing side effects, ultimately supporting both psychological and physical recovery. This comprehensive care model can potentially promote long-term health and quality of life for cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a significant psychiatric disorder with particularly high prevalence among adolescents. This mental health condition can have severe consequences, including academic failure, social withdrawal, and suicidal behavior. Given the increasing rate of depression in this age group, understanding the underlying biological mechanisms is essential for early detection and intervention. Recent studies have suggested that immune markers play a role in the pathophysiology of depression, prompting further investigation of their potential association with depressive symptoms in adolescents. AIM To investigate the relationship between immune markers (monocytes, lymphocytes, and direct bilirubin) and the incidence and severity of depression among adolescents. METHODS This cross-sectional study recruited 145 adolescent patients with depression [male (M)/female (F) = 38/107] from Jiangbin Hospital in Guangxi, Zhuang and 163 healthy controls (M/F = 77/86) from routine health check-ups. Blood samples were collected after an overnight fast. Depression severity was measured using the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale. The inclusion criteria were age 12-24 years, diagnosis of depressive disorder (ICD-10), and no recent antidepressant use. The exclusion criteria included psychiatric comorbidities and serious somatic diseases. Key statistical methods included group comparisons and correlation analyses. RESULTS There was a higher prevalence of females in the depression group (P < 0.001). Significant age differences were observed between the groups (Z = 9.43, P < 0.001). The depression group had higher monocyte (Z = 3.43, P < 0.001) and lymphocyte (t = 2.29, P < 0.05) counts, and higher serum direct bilirubin levels (Z = 4.72, P < 0.001). Monocyte count varied significantly according to depression severity, with lower counts in the mild group (Z = -2.90, P < 0.05). A negative correlation between age and lymphocyte counts was observed (ρ = -0.22, P < 0.01). Logistic regression analysis showed that serum direct bilirubin levels significantly predicted depression. CONCLUSION The potential role of elevated levels of immune markers in the early detection of depression in adolescents has been highlighted. Therefore, it is necessary to explore further the relationships between these immune markers and depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are widely performed surgeries for end-stage joint disease, yet the influence of depression and anxiety on postoperative outcomes remains unclear. This study aims to consolidate current evidence on the relationship between preoperative depression and/or anxiety disorders and postoperative outcomes in adult patients undergoing primary THA or TKA. Given the potential for these psychiatric conditions to affect recovery, pain management, and overall satisfaction, the results of this study are crucial to inform targeted perioperative interventions and improve patient-centered care. METHODS AND ANALYSIS We will search PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and PsycINFO from inception to the November 2024, adopting a comprehensive search strategy with no language restrictions. Eligible studies will include cohort studies evaluating adults with a diagnosis of depression and/or anxiety before THA or TKA compared to those without such disorders. Inclusion criteria will focus on preoperative psychiatric diagnoses, clearly defined postoperative outcomes (such as complications, functional recovery measures, pain, length of stay, and patient-reported outcomes). Risk of bias assessment will be performed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Meta-analysis will be conducted using a random-effects model to calculate pooled risk estimates and 95% confidence intervals for each outcome. Heterogeneity will be quantified with the I2 statistic, and a threshold of I2 > 50% will indicate substantial heterogeneity. Sources of heterogeneity will be explored via subgroup analyses or meta-regression if possible. Potential publication bias will be visually assessed using funnel plots and statistically tested using Egger's test. Sensitivity analyses will be carried out to evaluate the robustness of the results for each outcome through leave-one-out procedure. DISCUSSION This study will introduce a systematic and rigorous approach to synthesizing evidence from multiple cohorts, providing a comprehensive understanding of the impact of depression and anxiety on THA and TKA outcomes. The findings will guide clinicians in recognizing and managing mental health issues to optimize postoperative recovery and ultimately improve patient satisfaction and quality of life. Abstract
Neutrophils are key mediators of the immune response and play essential roles in the development of tumors and immune evasion. Emerging studies indicate that neutrophils also play a critical role in the immunotherapy resistance in cancer. In this review, firstly, we summarize the novel classification and phenotypes of neutrophils and describe the regulatory relationships between neutrophils and tumor metabolism, flora microecology, neuroendocrine and tumor therapy from a new perspective. Secondly, we review the mechanisms by which neutrophils affect drug resistance in tumor immunotherapy from the aspects of the immune microenvironment, tumor antigens, and epigenetics. Finally, we propose several promising strategies for overcoming tumor immunotherapy resistance by targeting neutrophils and provide new research ideas in this area.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic's social isolation has significantly impacted mental health, increasing depression and anxiety. This study explores the effects of social isolation on both humans and mice, focusing on behavioral changes and hippocampal protein expression. It also investigates genetic alterations through single-cell RNA and whole-genome sequencing (WGS). METHODS Here we conducted behavioral studies, protein expression studies, single-nucleus sequencing (snRNAseq), and WGS of the hippocampus of mice that underwent early maternal separation and social isolation, and a demographic study of community populations who had been self-quarantined owing to COVID-19 exposure to investigate the link between somatic mutations and stress due to social isolation. RESULTS The demographic study demonstrated more negative mental health findings among individuals who live alone or are single. Mice subjected to early maternal separation and social isolation demonstrated increased anxiety-like behaviors and stress-related corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor 1, and neurogenesis-related sex-determining region Y-box 2 and doublecortin expression. In snRNA-seq, differences, such as transthyretin increase, were observed in the maternal separation group, and somatic mutations, including insertion in the intron site of Tmem267, were observed in the social isolation group on WGS. CONCLUSION The results of this study suggest that stress, such as social isolation, can cause changes at the genetic level, as well as behavioral and brain protein changes.

Abstract
Adversity during infancy can affect neurobehavioral development and perturb the maturation of physiological systems. Dysregulated immune and inflammatory responses contribute to many of the later effects on health. Whether normalization can occur following a transition to more nurturing, benevolent conditions is unclear. To assess the potential for recovery, blood samples were obtained from 45 adolescents adopted by supportive families after impoverished infancies in institutional settings (post-institutionalized, PI). Their immune profiles were compared to 39 age-matched controls raised by their biological parents (non-adopted, NA). Leukocytes were immunophenotyped, and this analysis focuses on natural killer (NK) cell populations in circulation. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) seropositivity was evaluated to determine if early infection contributed to the impact of an atypical rearing. Associations with tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), two cytokines released by activated NK cells, were examined. Compared to the NA controls, PI adolescents had a lower percent of CD56bright NK cells in circulation, higher TNF-α levels, and were more likely to be infected with CMV. PI adolescents who were latent carriers of CMV expressed NKG2C and CD57 surface markers on more NK cells, including CD56dim lineages. The NK cell repertoire revealed lingering immune effects of early rearing while still maintaining an overall integrity and resilience.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is associated with a higher ovarian cancer risk. Prior work suggests that depression can lead to systemic immune suppression, which could potentially alter the anti-tumor immune response. METHODS We evaluated the association of pre-diagnosis depression with features of the anti-tumor immune response, including T and B cells and immunoglobulins, among women with ovarian tumor tissue collected in three studies, the Nurses' Health Study (NHS; n = 237), NHSII (n = 137) and New England Case-Control Study (NECC; n = 215). Women reporting depressive symptoms above a clinically relevant cut-point, antidepressant use, or physician diagnosis of depression at any time prior to diagnosis of ovarian cancer were considered to have pre-diagnosis depression. Multiplex immunofluorescence was performed on tumor tissue microarrays to measure immune cell infiltration. In pooled analyses, we estimated odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the positivity of tumor immune cells using a beta-binomial model comparing those with and without depression. We used Bonferroni corrections to adjust for multiple comparisons. RESULTS We observed no statistically significant association between depression status and any immune markers at the Bonferroni corrected p-value of 0.0045; however, several immune markers were significant at a nominal p-value of 0.05. Specifically, there were increased odds of having recently activated cytotoxic (CD3+CD8+CD69+) and exhausted-like T cells (CD3+Lag3+) in tumors of women with vs. without depression (OR = 1.36, 95 %CI = 1.09-1.69 and OR = 1.24, 95 %CI = 1.01-1.53, respectively). Associations were comparable when considering high grade serous tumors only (comparable ORs = 1.33, 95 %CI = 1.05-1.69 and OR = 1.25, 95 %CI = 0.99-1.58, respectively). There were decreased odds of having tumor infiltrating plasma cells (CD138+) in women with vs. without depression (OR = 0.54, 95 %CI = 0.33-0.90), which was similar among high grade serous carcinomas, although not statistically significant. Depression was also related to decreased odds of having naïve and memory B cells (CD20+: OR = 0.54, 95 %CI = 0.30-0.98) and increased odds of IgG (OR = 1.22, 95 %CI = 0.97-1.53) in high grade serous carcinomas. CONCLUSION Our results provide suggestive evidence that depression may influence ovarian cancer outcomes through changes in the tumor immune microenvironment, including increasing T cell activation and exhaustion and reducing antibody-producing B cells. Further studies with clinical measures of depression and larger samples are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract
PURPOSE Hematopoietic stem cell transplantations (HSCT) are extremely stressful procedures for pediatric patients. The activation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenocortical axis (HPA) can influence the immune system negatively and therefore the overall outcome. The distress thermometer (DT) is an easy to use tool for the self-assessment of perceived distress. METHODS In this prospective study, a DT with an attached problem list was used in 40 pediatric patients undergoing HSCT and in one parent of each patient. The patients were aged 10-18 years. The patients' cortisol, thyroid stimulating hormone, free triiodothyronine and thyroxine levels were measured regularly during the in-patient stay. RESULTS After admission to the hospital, the stress levels of the pediatric patients and their parents increased and reached their maximum on the day of HSCT. The overall stress values of the parents were higher than those of their children. There was a significant difference in the parents' stress levels on the day of HSCT, as compared to their stress levels on other days. The mean cortisol values of the pediatric patients also increased after admission, reaching significant elevated levels above the upper normal limit 1 week after HSCT and on discharge day. Although the pediatric patients experienced mainly exhaustion, especially on the day of transplantation, their parents mainly felt worry and anxiety. Interestingly, the rate of worry among children increased in the post-transplant period and reached its maximum on the day of discharge. CONCLUSIONS In summary, a significantly increased stress level is shown for both the patients and their parents. This is reflected for the patients both in the DT scores and in the increased cortisol values. For the parents, the focus is primarily on worry and anxiety, for the patients primarily on exhaustion and worry.

Abstract
Previous research work has already demonstrated that both the form of teaching as well as different teaching methods directly influence students' learning experience along with their psychobiological responses at the endocrine and autonomic level. Aiming to gain deeper insights into the constitution of the learning experience, this study examined the influence of external factors such as generally perceived life stress and self-efficacy on the immediate learning experience in different learning environments. Therefore, a randomized experimental field study was conducted in which both psychological constructs and physiological data (heart rate variability) were collected from healthy first-year medical students (n = 101) during the COVID-19 pandemic. In an effort to determine the consistency of the effects across various teaching formats, the same content of a practical histology course was carried out in a face-to-face setting as well as in passive and active online teaching. While self-efficacy was a strong predictor for positive course perceptions in all learning conditions (Pearson's r = 0.41-0.58), generally perceived worries correlated with higher anxiety during passive online learning and face-to-face learning (Pearson's r = 0.21-0.44), a finding supported by the negative correlation between the level of perceived life demands and enjoyment during the learning unit (Pearson's r = -0.40--0.43). Here, we additionally report initial evidence pointing towards the role of reduced general life stress as a resilience factor for the expression of physiological stress parameters in an academic context (small-sized effect; Pearson's r = 0.18). The data gathered in this study illustrate the relevance of emerging emotional manifestations-either aversive; negative effect or positive; protective effect-for the immediate learning process and thus establish a connection between medical education and the importance of mental health and wellbeing-especially discussed against the background of current social and political challenges in increasingly complex societal structures.

Abstract
PURPOSE It remains unclear why individuals living in disadvantaged neighborhoods have shorter non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) survival. It is possible that living in these deprived areas is linked with increased risk of developing aggressive NSCLC biology. Here, we explored the association of somatic KRAS mutations, which are associated with shorter survival in NSCLC patients, and 11 definitions of neighborhood disadvantage spanning socioeconomic and structural environmental elements. METHODS We analyzed data from 429 NSCLC patients treated at a Comprehensive Cancer Center from 2015 to 2018. Data were abstracted from medical records and each patient's home address was used to assign publicly available indices of neighborhood disadvantage. Prevalence Ratios (PRs) for the presence of somatic KRAS mutations were estimated using modified Poisson regression models adjusted for age, sex, smoking status, race/ethnicity, educational attainment, cancer stage, and histology. RESULTS In the NSCLC cohort, 29% had KRAS mutation-positive tumors. We found that five deprivation indices of socioeconomic disadvantage were associated with KRAS mutation. A one decile increase in several of these socioeconomic disadvantage indices was associated with a 1.06 to 1.14 increased risk of KRAS mutation. Measures of built structural environment were not associated with KRAS mutation status. CONCLUSION Socioeconomic disadvantage at the neighborhood level is associated with higher risk of KRAS mutation while disadvantage related to built environmental structural measures was inversely associated. Our results indicate not only that neighborhood disadvantage may contribute to aggressive NSCLC biology, but the pathways linking biology to disadvantage are likely operating through socioeconomic-related stress.

The effect of chronic stress on behaviors, inflammation and lymphocyte subtypes in male and female rats. Behav Brain Res 2023; 439:114220. Abstract
Excessively released proinflammatory mediators from activated macrophages and lymphocytes may contribute to the etiology of depression. However, the relationship between lymphocytes and depression is not fully understood. Although women have higher depression risk than men, sex/gender differences in psychoneuroimmunological mechanisms are still unclear. To explore these two questions, chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) was used to evaluate the changes in behaviors, inflammation and lymphocyte subtypes in adult male and female Wistar rats. Results show that CUMS increased anhedonia and anxiety-like behaviors, along with increased serum corticosterone, hippocampal pro-inflammatory factors, CD11b, IFN-γ, IL-6 and IL-17, but decreased CD4, CD25, CD4/CD8 ratio, GFAP, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and NE concentrations, regardless of sex. There was no positive correlation between sucrose preference and blood CD4/CD8 ratio, but a positive correlation between sucrose preference and spleen CD25, sucrose preference and neurotransmitters (NE and 5-HT), spleen CD25 and serum TGF-β1/IL-6 ratio were found, regardless of sex. Females presented higher basal locomotion, blood CD4, CD4/CD8 ratio, serum corticosteroid and IL-6 concentrations, but lower hippocampal norepinephrine (NE) than males. Although CUMS didn't induce significant sex differences, females presented more changes in CD4 and CD8 lymphocytes than male rats. CUMS caused abnormalities in corticosteroid, lymphocytes, cytokines and neurotransmitters, which might be the precursors for inducing depression-like behaviors in both sexes.

Abstract
PURPOSE Patients with breast cancer are more likely to experience psychological distress than the general population. This study aimed to explore the relationship between depression and anxiety status measured before chemotherapy and adverse events during adjuvant chemotherapy in Chinese breast cancer patients. METHODS This prospective study was conducted on 290 postoperative early-stage breast cancer patients (response rate 96.7%) in China. Depression and anxiety status before adjuvant chemotherapy were assessed by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Adverse events that occurred throughout the course of chemotherapy were graded and recorded according to Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) 4.02. RESULTS The rates of depression and anxiety were 20.0% and 31.4%, respectively, at baseline. The incidence of grade two or higher myelosuppression induced by chemotherapy was correlated with depression before chemotherapy (p = 0.037). Multivariate analysis showed that the incidence of myelosuppression was significantly related to depression before chemotherapy (p = 0.032). There was no association between depression and anxiety status and other adverse events (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS We observed an association between depression status in breast cancer patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy and chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression. Monitoring the depression status of breast cancer patients before chemotherapy may help to optimize the management of adverse events.

Abstract
The current study aimed at examining the potential role of self-compassion and self-judgment components on depressive symptomatology and psychological health in people with a diagnosis of chronic physical disease. The sample included 223 participants with a diagnosis of chronic physical disease, aged between 18 and 45 years, who completed an online survey. The tested model showed an excellent fit to the empirical data and path analysis results indicated that mindfulness, self-judgment, and isolation have a significant impact on depressive symptomatology (explaining 40% of its variance) and also on psychological health (explaining 45% of its variance). This study shed some light on the role of both self-compassion and self-judgment components, suggesting the importance of the promotion of mindfulness skills and the reduction of self-judgment and feelings of isolation in people with chronic physical disease. These findings seem to support the development of more effective interventions for the promotion of psychological health and reduction of depressive symptoms in people diagnosed with a chronic physical disease.

Abstract
ObjectiveNeoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) plays an important role in patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer (EC). We aim to determine the prognostic risk factors and establish a reliable nomogram to predict overall survival (OS) based on SEER population.MethodsPatients with EC coded by 04–15 in the SEER database were included. The data were divided into training group and verification group (7:3). The Cox proportional-risk model was evaluated by using the working characteristic curve (receiver operating characteristic curve, ROC) and the area under the curve (AUC), and a nomogram was constructed. The calibration curve was used to measure the consistency between the predicted and the actual results. Decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to evaluate its clinical value. The best cut-off value of nomogram score in OS was determined by using X-tile software, and the patients were divided into low-risk, medium-risk, and high-risk groups.ResultsA total of 2,209 EC patients who underwent nCRT were included in further analysis, including 1,549 in the training cohort and 660 in the validation group. By Cox analysis, sex, marital status, T stage, N stage, M stage, and pathological grade were identified as risk factors. A nomogram survival prediction model was established to predict the 36-, 60-, and 84-month survival. The ROC curve and AUC showed that the model had good discrimination ability. The correction curve was in good agreement with the prediction results. DCA further proved the effective clinical value of the nomogram model. The results of X-tile analysis showed that the long-term prognosis of patients in the low-risk subgroup was better in the training cohort and the validation cohort (p < 0.001).ConclusionThis study established an easy-to-use nomogram risk prediction model consisting of independent prognostic factors in EC patients receiving nCRT, helping to stratify risk, identify high-risk patients, and provide personalized treatment options.

Abstract
Humans are exposed to both psychological stress (PS) and radiation in some scenarios such as manned deep-space missions. It is of great concern to verify possible enhanced deleterious effects from such concurrent exposure. Pioneer studies showed that chronic restraint-induced PS (CRIPS) could attenuate Trp53 functions and increase gamma-ray-induced carcinogenesis in Trp53-heterozygous mice while CRIPS did not significantly modify the effects on X-ray-induced hematopoietic toxicity in Trp53 wild-type mice. As high-linear energy transfer (LET) radiation is the most important component of space radiation in causing biological effects, we further investigated the effects of CRIPS on high-LET iron-particle radiation (Fe)-induced hematopoietic toxicity in Trp53-heterozygous mice. The results showed that CRIPS alone could hardly induce significant alteration in hematological parameters (peripheral hemogram and micronucleated erythrocytes in bone marrow) while concurrent exposure caused elevated genotoxicity measured as micronucleus incidence in erythrocytes. Particularly, exposure to either CRISP or Fe-particle radiation at a low dose (0.1 Gy) did not induce a marked increase in the micronucleus incidence; however, concurrent exposure caused a significantly higher increase in the micronucleus incidence. These findings indicated that CRIPS could enhance the deleterious effects of high-LET radiation, particularly at a low dose, on the hematopoietic toxicity in Trp53-heterozygous mice.

Abstract
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy can spread infections if the equipment is not cleaned properly. We report a case of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia likely spread by unclean CPAP equipment and accessories. A 48-year-old man with severe obstructive sleep apnea was using CPAP equipment that had never been cleaned for 5 years. He experienced intermittent mild fever for 6 weeks. His chest images showed a solitary pulmonary granuloma. Pneumocystis jirovecii was identified from the bronchoalveolar fluid, the CPAP mask, and the air tubing. The fever subsided immediately after changing to a clean CPAP device. We prescribed sulfamethoxazole 400 mg and trimethoprim 80 mg twice daily for one month. Three months later, the pulmonary granuloma disappeared, and Pneumocystis jirovecii was absent in the bronchoalveolar fluid. Poorly cleaned CPAP devices could harbor Pneumocystis jirovecii and spread pulmonary infection in immunocompetent persons. Appropriate cleaning of CPAP equipment is essential to minimize infection risk.

Abstract
Some selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), primarily sertraline, demonstrate anti-proliferative activity in malignant cell-lines and in xenografted mouse models of colorectal tumor. There is, however, a paucity of comparative studies on the anti-tumor effects of SSRIs. We compared the in vitro and in vivo effects of sertraline and citalopram on murine 4T1 breast cancer. Grafted mice were used to determine the rate of tumor growth and survival as well as the impact of stress and antidepressant treatment on tumor progression and mortality and on pro-inflammatory cytokines. Sertraline, in the micromolar range, but not citalopram, induced a significant in vitro concentration-dependent inhibition of murine 4T1 cell proliferation and splenocyte viability. In contrast, sertraline (10 mg/kg/d), enhanced in vivo tumor growth. Contrary to the study's hypothesis, chronic mild stress did not modify tumor growth in grafted mice. The in vitro effects of sertraline on tumor growth seem to be the opposite of its in vivo effects. The impact of sertraline treatment on humans with breast cancer should be further investigated.

Abstract
Chronic stress refers to nonspecific systemic reactions under the over-stimulation of different external and internal factors for a long time. Previous studies confirmed that chronic psychological stress had a negative effect on almost all tissues and organs. We intended to further identify potential gene targets related to the pathogenesis of chronic stress-induced consequences involved in different diseases. In our study, mice in the model group lived under the condition of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) until they expressed behaviors like depression which were supposed to undergo chronic stress. We applied high-throughput RNA sequencing to assess mRNA expression and obtained transcription profiles in lung tissue from CUMS mice and control mice for analysis. In view of the prediction of high-throughput RNA sequences and bioinformatics software, and mRNA regulatory network was constructed. First, we conducted differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and obtained 282 DEGs between CUMS (group A) and the control model (group B). Then, we conducted functional and pathway enrichment analyses. In general, the function of upregulated regulated DEGs is related to immune and inflammatory responses. PPI network identified several essential genes, of which ten hub genes were related to the T cell receptor signaling pathway. qRT-PCR results verified the regulatory network of mRNA. The expressions of CD28, CD3e, and CD247 increased in mice with CUMS compared with that in control. This illustrated immune pathways are related to the pathological molecular mechanism of chronic stress and may provide information for identifying potential biomarkers and early detection of chronic stress.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of NO modulators and antioxidant treatments on endocrine (plasma corticosterone), cellular (heat shock protein 70 [HSP-70] and nuclear factor κB [NF-κB]), and oxidative stress markers in repetitively stressed rats. Repetitive (restraint) stress (RS 1hr/day × 21 days) enhanced the levels of cellular and endocrine stress markers in the rat blood and altered pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance differentially in the control and test groups. Exposure to repetitive RS enhanced malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, lowered reduced glutathione (GSH), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels as well as nitric oxide (NOx) levels. NO precursor L-arginine and NO synthase inhibitors were found to differentially modulate stress-induced mechanism in altering NF-κB, HSP-70, and corticosterone levels. The antioxidant L-ascorbic acid (L-AA) significantly suppressed RS(×21)-induced elevation of NF-κB and HSP-70 levels, depicting protective effects, as also evidenced by reversal of elevated corticosterone levels. The results suggest that NO modulators and antioxidants differentially influence repetitive stress-induced changes in endocrine and cellular markers, and the complex interaction between NO and cellular markers like HSP70 and NF-κB plays a crucial modulatory role in this phenomenon.

Abstract
The effects of nitric oxide modulators (NO-modulators) and antioxidants on acute (RSx1) restraint stress induced endocrine, cellular and oxidative/nitrosative stress markers was studied in Wistar rats. The results of our study revealed that exposure to RS(x1) enhanced malondialdehyde (MDA), heat shock protein (HSP-70), corticosterone, nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) levels and suppressed glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and total nitrites and nitrates (NOx) levels. NO precursor and NO synthase inhibitors were found to differentially modulate stress mechanisms, by altering NF-κB, HSP-70 and corticosterone levels. l-Ascorbic acid significantly suppressed acute stress induced elevation of NF-κB and HSP-70 levels depicting protective effects, as also evidenced by reversal of elevated plasma corticosterone levels. Therefore, modulation of oxidative and nitrosative pathways, offers an approach in modulating stress induced changes associated with various disorders.

Abstract
Numerous studies showed that cancer significantly increases the risk of developing depressive and anxious symptoms. It has been shown that self-esteem is an important psychological resource and is associated with many health behaviors. Furthermore, the vulnerability model of low self-esteem, which has received strong empirical support, highlights that low self-esteem is a real risk factor in the development of depressive disorders. This article aims at providing an overview of the involvement of self-esteem in the psychological adjustment to cancer. After briefly reviewing the literature, we suggest that its implication in the development of depressive disorders and its association with coping strategies and social support in cancer patients justify the consideration of self-esteem in oncology psychological care, especially in young adult patients and those with significant physical impairment following treatment.

Abstract
Background Insomnia, depressive disorders, and to a more general view, mood disorders are raising people’s concerns and causing disability of life. Herein, we try to seek the association of such illnesses with subsequent breast cancer. Methods This population-based, retrospective cohort study used data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. This study included 232,108 women diagnosed with insomnia, depressive disorders, and mood disorders from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2013. Physician diagnosed insomnia, depressive disorders, or mood disorders using outpatient and inpatient records before diagnosis of breast cancer. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis is adjusted for women with insomnia, depressive disorders, mood disorders, and other factors like insured amount, urbanization, and comorbidities such as having subsequent breast cancer. Results Sleep medication was associated with a significantly increased incidence rate of breast cancer (aHR = 1.23 (95% CI = 1.13, 1.35), p < 0.001). Insomnia was associated with significant increased hazard of breast cancer (aHR = 1.16 (95% CI = 1.07, 1.27), p < 0.001). Annual insured amount >20,000 (TWD), high urbanization area, and hyperlipidemia were associated with increased hazard of breast cancer (aHR = 1.13 (95% CI = 1.01, 1.27), p = 0.04; aHR = 1.41 (95% CI = 1.17, 1.71), p < 0.001; aHR = 1.14 995% CI = 1.02, 1.29), p = 0.02, respectively). There was a positive correlation between depressive disorders and increased incidence rate of breast cancer but not statistically significant (aHR = 1.11 (95% CI = 0.99, 1.25), p = 0.08). Mood disorders were not associated with increased hazard (aHR = 1.11 (95% CI = 0.91, 1.34), p = 0.31). Conclusion In this study, women with insomnia had increased risk of breast cancer, particularly those in high urbanization or with high insured amounts. Sleep medication (benzodiazepine (BZD) or non-BZD) and hyperlipidemia were independently associated with a higher hazard ratio of breast cancer. Insomnia along with sleep medication did not yield more hazards than each alone. Mood disorders appeared to be not associated with subsequent breast cancer. However, depressive disorders, the subgroups of mood disorders, could possibly increase the incidence rate of breast cancer though not statistically significant.

Abstract
Psychosocial factors have become central concepts in oncology research. However, their role in the prognosis of the disease is not yet well established. Studies on this subject report contradictory findings. We examine if illness perception and quality of life reports measured at baseline could predict the stress hormones and inflammatory markers in breast cancer survivors, one year later. We use statistics and machine learning methods to analyze our data and find the best prediction model. Patients with stage I to III breast cancer (N = 70) were assessed twice, at baseline and one year later, and completed scales assessing quality of life and illness perception. Blood and urine samples were obtained to measure stress hormones (cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and inflammatory markers (c-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and fibrinogen). Family quality of life is a strong predictor for ACTH. Women who perceive their illness as being more chronic at baseline have higher ESR and fibrinogen values one year later. The artificial intelligence (AI) data analysis yields the highest prediction score of 81.2% for the ACTH stress hormone, and 70% for the inflammatory marker ESR. Abstract
PURPOSE Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has evolved into a worldwide pandemic and continues to escalate exponentially in many countries across the globe. Recently, higher rates of psychological distress have been reported in several countries during the pandemic. Accordingly, the study aim was to investigate the relationship between public mental health and immune status during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS Participants of this cross-sectional study were 2252 national and foreign residents of Saudi Arabia. We used a web-based self-rated questionnaire to measure the association between psychological distress (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales [DASS-21]) and immune status (Immune Status Questionnaire [ISQ]) during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also investigated predictors of reduced immune status using binary logistic regression analyses. RESULTS Data from 1721 respondents showed that 17.5% of participants scored below the immune status cutoff (ISQ ˂ 6). Mean (± standard deviation) depression, anxiety, and stress scores in the reduced immune status group (ISQ ˂ 6) indicated moderate depression, anxiety, and stress (19.1 ± 11.4; 15.0 ± 9.6; 21.8 ± 11.2, respectively) and were significantly higher than scores in the normal immune status group (ISQ ≥ 6) (8.6 ± 9.1, P ˂ 0.0001; 5.0 ± 6.7, P ˂ 0.0001; 9.3 ± 9.3, P ˂ 0.0001, respectively). The regression analysis showed that age, anxiety, and stress were the only factors that significantly predicted the presence of reduced immune status. CONCLUSION There is an association between mental health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic and immune response in the public, especially in elderly people.

Abstract
While prior research has found mindfulness to be linked with emotional responses to events, less is known about this effect in a non-clinical sample. Even less is known regarding the mechanisms of the underlying processes: It is unclear whether participants who exhibit increased acceptance show decreased emotional reactivity (i.e., lower affective responses towards events overall) or a speedier emotional recovery (i.e., subsequent decrease in negative affect) due to adopting an accepting stance. To address these questions, we re-analysed two Ambulatory Assessment data sets. The first (NStudy1 = 125) was a 6-week randomized controlled trial (including a 40-day ambulatory assessment); the second (NStudy2 = 175) was a 1-week ambulatory assessment study. We found state mindfulness to be more strongly associated with emotional reactivity than with recovery, and that only emotional reactivity was significantly dampened by mindfulness training. Regarding the different facets of mindfulness, we found that the strongest predictor of both emotional reactivity and recovery was non-judgemental acceptance. Finally, we found that being aware of one's own thoughts and behaviour could be beneficial or detrimental for emotional recovery, depending on whether participants accepted their thoughts and emotions. Together, these findings provide evidence for predictions derived from the monitoring and acceptance theory.

Abstract
Psychological stress is a common etiology among patients with lung cancer and serves as a potential indication of poor prognosis and advanced cancer clinical stage. Evidence indicates that depression is positively correlated with the evolvement of lung carcinoma. Nevertheless, the mechanisms underlying the effects of mental disorder on lung cancer have not been considerably and systemically explored. We hypothesized that mental disorder may affect the adjustment of the tumor microenvironment and immune cells. We used the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) procedure to induce depressed mice models and established tumor-bearing models of C57BL/6 J mice. Results revealed that the worsening of lung cancer was notably hastened in the CUMS + tumor group. Notably, the expression of PD-L1 in tumor issues increased in the tumor microenvironment, accompanied with a decline in the levels of CD8. On the basis of the date of tumor migration, our results indicated that MMPs and VEGF significantly increased after CUMS + tumor treatment. Thus, we demonstrated that modulation of the tumor microenvironment is pivotal for depression-promoted lung cancer migration.

Abstract
Simple Summary In multicellular organisms, inflammation is the body’s most primitive and essential protective response against any external agent. Inflammation, however, not only causes various modern diseases such as cardiovascular disorders, neurological disorders, autoimmune diseases, metabolic syndrome, infectious diseases, and cancer but also shortens the healthy life expectancy. This review focuses on the onset of carcinogenesis due to chronic inflammation caused by pathogen infections and inhalation/ingestion of foreign substances. This study summarizes animal models associated with inflammation-related carcinogenesis by organ. By determining factors common to inflammatory carcinogenesis models, we examined strategies for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory carcinogenesis in humans. Abstract Inflammation-related carcinogenesis has long been known as one of the carcinogenesis patterns in humans. Common carcinogenic factors are inflammation caused by infection with pathogens or the uptake of foreign substances from the environment into the body. Inflammation-related carcinogenesis as a cause for cancer-related death worldwide accounts for approximately 20%, and the incidence varies widely by continent, country, and even region of the country and can be affected by economic status or development. Many novel approaches are currently available concerning the development of animal models to elucidate inflammation-related carcinogenesis. By learning from the oldest to the latest animal models for each organ, we sought to uncover the essential common causes of inflammation-related carcinogenesis. This review confirmed that a common etiology of organ-specific animal models that mimic human inflammation-related carcinogenesis is prolonged exudation of inflammatory cells. Genotoxicity or epigenetic modifications by inflammatory cells resulted in gene mutations or altered gene expression, respectively. Inflammatory cytokines/growth factors released from inflammatory cells promote cell proliferation and repair tissue injury, and inflammation serves as a “carcinogenic niche”, because these fundamental biological events are common to all types of carcinogenesis, not just inflammation-related carcinogenesis. Since clinical strategies are needed to prevent carcinogenesis, we propose the therapeutic apheresis of inflammatory cells as a means of eliminating fundamental cause of inflammation-related carcinogenesis.

Abstract
Epigenetic modifications refer to reversible changes in gene expression. Epigenetic changes include DNA methylation, histone modification, and non-coding RNAs that are collectively called epigenome. Various epigenetic effects account for the main impacts of environment and lifestyle on multifactorial diseases such as cancers. The environment's impacts on cancers act as double-edged swords. While some of them are involved in cancer development, some others contribute to preventing it. In this review article, the keywords 'cancer', 'epigenetic', 'lifestyle', 'carcinogen', ' cancer inhibitors" and related words were searched to finding a link between environmental factors and epigenetic mechanisms influencing cancer in ISI, PUBMED, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar databases. Based on the literature environmental factors that are effective in cancer development or cancer prevention in this review will be divided into physical, chemical, biological, and lifestyle types. Different types of epigenetic mechanisms known for each of these agents will be addressed in this review. Unregulated changes in epigenome play roles in tumorigenicity and cancer development. The action mechanism and genes targeted which are related to the signaling pathway for epigenetic alterations determine whether environmental agents are carcinogenic or prevent cancer. Having knowledge about the effective factors and related mechanisms such as epigenetic on cancer can help to prevent and better cancers treatment.

Abstract
Anthropogenic activities can lead to several devastating effects on the environment. The pollutants, which include the discharge of effluents, runoffs in the form of different lethal and sub-lethal concentrations of pesticides, heavy metals, and other contaminants, can harm exposed fauna and flora. The aquatic environment is the ultimate destination for many pollutants which negatively affect aquatic biodiversity and even can cause a species to become extinct. A pollutant can directly affect the behavior of an animal, disrupt cellular systems, and impair the immune system. This harm can be reduced and even mitigated by adopting proper approaches for the conservation of the target biota. Among aquatic organisms, cetaceans, such as the Yangtze finless porpoise, Irrawaddy dolphin, Ganges River dolphin, Amazon River dolphin, and Indus River dolphin, are at a higher risk of extinction because of lack of knowledge and research, and thus insufficient information with respect to their conservation status, management, and policies. Pneumonia is one of the leading causes of mass mortalities of cetaceans. This article reviews the limited research reported on stress and pneumonia induced by pollution, stress-induced pneumonia and immunosuppression, pneumonia-caused mass mortalities of aquatic mammals, and vaccination in wildlife with a specific focus on aquatic mammals, the role of genomics in vaccine development and vaccination, and the major challenges in vaccine development for biodiversity conservation.

Abstract
Animals receive environmental stimuli from neural signals in order to produce hormones that control immune responses. Glucocorticoids (GCs) are a group of steroid hormones produced in the adrenal cortex and well-known mediators for the nervous and immune systems. GC secretion is induced by circadian rhythm and stress, and plasma GC levels are high at the active phase of animals and under stress condition. Clinically, GCs are used for allergies, autoimmunity, and chronic inflammation, because they have strong anti-inflammatory effects and induce the apoptosis of lymphocytes. Glucocorticoid receptor (GR) acts as a transcription factor and represses the expression of inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and prostaglandins by binding to its motif, glucocorticoid-response element, or to other transcription factors. In mice, GR suppresses the antigen-stimulated inflammation mediated by macrophages, dendritic cells, and epithelial cells, and impairs cytotoxic immune responses by downregulating interferon-γ production and inhibiting the development of type-1 helper T cells, CD8+ T cells, and natural killer cells. These immune inhibitory effects prevent lethality by excessive inflammation, but at the same time increase the susceptibility to infection and cancer. GCs can also activate the immune system. The circadian cycle of GC secretion controls the diurnal oscillations of the distribution and response of T cells, thus supporting T cell maintenance and effective immune protection against infection. Moreover, several reports have shown that GR has the potential to enhance the activities of Th2, Th17, and immunoglobulin-producing B cells. Stress has two different effects on immune responses: immune suppression to cause mortality by infection and cancer, and excessive immune activation to induce chronic inflammation and autoimmune disease. Consistently, stress-induced GCs strongly suppress cell-mediated immunity and cause viral infection and tumor development. They may also enhance the development of pathogenic helper T cells and cause tissue damage through neural and intestinal inflammation. Past studies have reported the positive and negative effects of GCs on the immune system. These opposing properties of GCs may regulate the immune balance between the responsiveness to antigens and excessive inflammation in steady-state and stress conditions.

Abstract
Introduction To investigate the level of psychological resilience and the impact of attachment styles on the degree of resilience to distress in patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy. Methods Patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy were included in the study. Participants were requested to complete the Relationship Scales Questionnaire (RSQ), Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA), and a personal information form during the data collection phase. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare that parameter among the attachment styles. Logistic regression analysis was carried out to identify independent factors affecting resilience. Results A total of 384 individuals were included in this study (mean age 53.5 ± 12.1, 27.1 % male). The RSQ results showed that the attachment styles of 190 (49.5%) participants were secure, whereas 194 (50.5%) subjects had an insecure attachment. The median RSA score of participants with a secure attachment was significantly higher than that of patients with insecure attachment (133.15 ± 16.6 vs. 127.0 ± 20.0, p=0.001). Patients with the RSA score of >130 were more educated, were in better economic condition, had better perceived social support, and had a higher frequency of secure attachment than those defined as low resilient. Logistic regression analysis revealed that poor and medium perceived social support and insecure attachment style independently predicted low resilience (RSA≤130). Conclusion This study demonstrates that the secure attachment style in patients with cancer improves stress resilience as compared to the insecure attachment style. Our findings also show that insufficient perceived social support is likely a negative factor in resilience.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The incidence of novel coronavirus infection across the globe has been uneven, hitting some population subgroups harder than others. Media coverage has proffered explanations for this differential vulnerability, but psychosocial risk factors have been largely ignored. In contrast, multiple theories, medical and psychological, point to one psychosocial factor - stress - as important to the etiology of disease. They also agree that pathogenic stress arises from the particular circumstance in which adaptational demands overwhelm a person's resources, creating "stress overload" that deregulates normal functioning and increases susceptibility to illness. Assessment of stress overload is proposed as essential to understanding viral spread in the current pandemic.Methods: Studies are reviewed explicating (1) stress overload theories and relevant empirical evidence, (2) construction of a stress overload measure and related validity evidence.Results: Findings support the role of stress overload in illness and the accuracy of the measure in predicting illness.Conclusion: It is concluded that assessment of stress overload may help to explain the observed coronavirus disparities, and to identify populations at risk for imminent infection. The 10-item Stress Overload Scale-Short is offered as a potentially useful tool for researchers and clinicians working to map, and stem, the proliferation of coronavirus.

However, these effects on metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma (mPCA) are not well-studied. The aim of this study was to explore whether nSES influences survival in patients with mPCA. Methods nSES measures were derived from U.S. census data at the census tract (CT) level. We correlated medical records of mPCA patients (diagnosed 2010-2016; n=370) to nSES measures retrospectively via a geocode derived from patient address. Multivariable cox proportional hazards models were used to identify patient-level (age, sex, race, marital status, treatment (radiation/chemo/surgery), PCA family history, stage, Jewish ancestry, tobacco use, BMI, diabetes, and statin use) and nSES measures (deprivation, racial concentration, stability, transportation access, immigration) associated with mPCA survival; P values <0.05 were significant. Results Eighty-two percent of patients were White; less than one-third of patients resided in highly deprived neighborhoods. Three hundred thirty-three mPCA patient deaths occurred, with a survival ranging from 7-9 months (median 8 months). Patient-level factors including younger age, receipt of chemotherapy or initial surgery and statin use, were associated with improved survival, whereas neighborhood stability (i.e., a higher % of residents still living in the same house as 1 year ago) was significantly associated with poor pancreatic survival. Conclusions Our findings suggest nSES has limited effect on survival of mPCA patients as compared to clinical variables. This may be due to the aggressive nature of this cancer, however, additional studies with larger, more diverse cohorts are needed to better understand the effect of nSES on survival of patients with mPCA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Psychological distress is common in cancer patients during the diagnostic phase. Research demonstrated that anxiety, depression and defense mechanisms may influence physical and psychological well-being in patients with malignant tumors. The present retrospective study investigated the associations between clinical and psychological characteristics of cancer patients waiting for the diagnosis, focusing on metastatic cancer (MC) and breast cancer (BC). METHOD Patients with a new diagnosis of cancer referring to a Clinical Oncology Unit in Central Italy were interviewed during the 2017 for psychological assessment. Double-blind information about anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, defense style, and cancer diagnosis were available for the 567 patients included in this study. T-test, chi-squared and regression analyses were performed to detect associations between psychological variables and the presence of metastasis (MC) in the whole sample and in the subgroup of breast cancer (BC) patients. RESULTS Female gender and younger age were associated with anxiety, depression, and maladaptive defense style. A significant positive relationship was found between presence of metastasis and symptoms of anxiety. Depression resulted significantly more frequent in BC, while there was a trend close to statistical significance in MC. Immature defense style was widely used by BC women, with a score close to statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS This retrospective study provided empirical evidence of the relationship between psychological functioning and clinical characteristics of cancer. In line with previous research, our findings confirmed the peculiar psychological functioning of BC patients. Further investigations are needed to understand how the diagnosis of cancer may influence the individual psychological functioning and vice versa.

Abstract
BACKGROUND According to the views of psychoneuroendocrinoimmunology, many interactions exist between nervous, endocrine and immune system the purpose of which is to achieve adaptive measures restoring an internal equilibrium (homeostasis) following stress conditions. The center where these interactions converge is the hypothalamus. This is a center of the autonomic nervous system that controls the visceral systems, including the immune system, through both the nervous and neuroendocrine mechanisms. The nervous mechanisms are based on nervous circuits that bidirectionally connect hypothalamic neurons and neurons of the sympathetic and parasympathetic system; the neuroendocrine mechanisms are based on the release by neurosecretory hypothalamic neurons of hormones that target the endocrine cells and on the feedback effects of the hormones secreted by these endocrine cells on the same hypothalamic neurons. Moreover, the hypothalamus is an important subcortical center of the limbic system that controls through nervous and neuroendocrine mechanisms the areas of the cerebral cortex where the psychic functions controlling mood, emotions, anxiety and instinctive behaviors take place. Accordingly, various studies conducted in the last decades have indicated that hypothalamic diseases may be associated with immune and/or psychic disorders. OBJECTIVE Various researches have reported that the hypothalamus is controlled by the cerebellum through a feedback nervous circuit, namely the hypothalamocerebellar circuit, which bi-directionally connects regions of the hypothalamus, including the immunoregulatory ones, and related regions of the cerebellum. An objective of the present review was to analyze the anatomical bases of the nervous and neuroendocrine mechanisms for the control of the immune system and, in particular, of the interaction between hypothalamus and cerebellum to achieve the immunoregulatory function. CONCLUSION Since the hypothalamus represents the link through which the immune functions may influence the psychic functions and vice versa, the cerebellum, controlling several regions of the hypothalamus, could be considered as a primary player in the regulation of the multiple functional interactions postulated by psychoneuroendocrinoimmunology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review aims to inform research and clinical care on the current state of knowledge on the relationship between positive affect and medication adherence. METHOD Searches were carried out in PsycINFO, PubMed MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), CINAHL, and Embase. There were no limits on study type, publication date, language, or participant demographics. Studies reporting a relationship between positive affect and medication adherence were eligible for inclusion if positive affect was measured prior to or concurrently with medication adherence. RESULTS Nine studies met inclusion criteria. All studies were prospective cohort or cross-sectional and examined positive affect and medication adherence in people living with HIV or cardiovascular conditions. The majority of results indicated positive associations between positive affect and medication adherence, with Cohen's d effect sizes ranging from -0.40 to 1.27. CONCLUSIONS Consistent with previous theoretical work, this systematic review provides evidence of a link between positive affect and improved medication adherence. Better measurement of both affect and medication adherence across chronic conditions is an important focus for future research and will inform targeted interventions to improve adherence and, ultimately, decrease the morbidity, mortality, and cost associated with suboptimal adherence in chronic physical conditions. Abstract
Mounting preclinical and clinical evidence continues to support a role for the neuroendocrine system in the modulation of tumor biology and progression. Several studies have shown data supporting a link between chronic stress and cancer progression. Dysregulation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis has been implicated in promoting angiogenesis, tumor cell proliferation and survival, alteration of the immune response and exacerbating inflammatory networks in the tumor microenvironment. Here, we review how SNS and HPA dysregulation contributes to disturbances in immune cell populations, modifies cancer biology, and impacts immunotherapy response. We also highlight several interventions aimed at circumventing the adverse effects stress has on cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prenatal exposure to depression has been considered as a risk factor for adverse childhood, while it is accompanied by unknown molecular mechanisms. The aim of this study was to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and associated biological processes between cord blood samples from neonates born to mothers who exposed to major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy mothers. METHODS The microarray data GSE114852 were downloaded to analyze the mRNA expression profiles of umbilical cord blood with 31 samples exposed to prenatal MDD and 62 samples with healthy mothers. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway and Gene ontology enrichment analyses were conducted to identify associated biochemical pathways and functional categories of the DEGs. The protein-protein interaction network was constructed and the top 10 hub genes in the network were predicted. RESULTS The results showed several immunity related processes, such as "phagosome", "Epstein-Barr virus infection", "proteasome", "positive regulation of I-kappaB kinase/NF-kappaB signaling", "interferon-gamma-mediated signaling pathway", and "tumor necrosis factor" presented significant differences between two groups. Most of the hub genes (for example PSMD2, PSMD6, PSMB8, PSMB9) were also associated with immune pathways. CONCLUSION This bioinformatic analysis demonstrated immune-mediated mechanisms might play a fatal role in abnormalities in fetal gene expression profiles caused by prenatal MDD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Among patients with cancer, prior research suggests that patients with mental illness may have reduced survival. The objective was to assess the impact of psychiatric utilisation (PU) prior to cancer diagnosis on survival outcomes. METHODS All residents of Ontario diagnosed with one of the top 10 malignancies (1997-2014) were included. The primary exposure was psychiatric utilisation gradient (PUG) score in 5 years prior to cancer: 0: none, 1: outpatient, 2: emergency department, 3: hospital admission. A multivariable, cause-specific hazard model was used to assess the effect of PUG score on cancer-specific mortality (CSM), and a Cox proportional hazard model for effect on all-cause mortality (ACM). RESULTS A toal of 676,125 patients were included: 359,465 (53.2%) with PUG 0, 304,559 (45.0%) PUG 1, 7901 (1.2%) PUG 2, and 4200 (0.6%) PUG 3. Increasing PUG score was independently associated with worse CSM, with an effect gradient across the intensity of pre-diagnosis PU (vs PUG 0): PUG 1 h 1.05 (95% CI 1.04-1.06), PUG 2 h 1.36 (95% CI 1.30-1.42), and PUG 3 h 1.73 (95% CI 1.63-1.84). Increasing PUG score was also associated with worse ACM. CONCLUSIONS Pre-cancer diagnosis PU is independently associated with worse CSM and ACM following diagnosis among patients with solid organ malignancies.

Abstract
Data regarding cancer risk for individuals who were exposed to traumatic and stressful life events are conflicting. We sought to evaluate the association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the risk of the four most common solid tumors: lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers. We conducted four nested case-control studies using a large UK population-based database. Cases were defined as individuals with any medical code for the specific malignancy. For every case, we used incidence-density sampling to match four controls by age, sex, practice site, and both duration and calendar time of follow-up. Exposure of interest was any diagnosis of PTSD prior to cancer diagnosis. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for cancer risk associated with PTSD were estimated using multivariable conditional logistic regression and were adjusted for smoking status, obesity, and antidepressant use. The study population included four case groups according to cancer type. There were 19,143 cases with lung cancer (74,473 matched controls), 22,163 cases with colorectal cancer (86,538 matched controls), 31,352 cases with breast cancer (123,285 matched controls), and 27,212 cases with prostate cancer (105,940 matched controls). There was no statistically significant association between PTSD and cancer risk among any of the cancer types: lung, OR = 0.73, 95% CI [0.43, 1.23]; breast, OR = 0.73, 95% CI [0.52, 1.01]; prostate, OR = 1.24, 95% CI [0.87, 1.77]; and colorectal, OR = 1.05, 95% CI [0.68, 1.62]. Our findings indicated that participants in our study with PTSD were not at increased risk of lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers.

Abstract
This study was to test hypotheses that indoleamine 2, 3-dioxygenase and B7-H1 expressions can be used as prognostic markers in human pancreatic carcinoma (PC). Ninety-five patients were recruited who had undergone radical surgical resection for PC. IDO and B7-H1 expressions in PC tissue specimens were evaluated by immunohistochemistry (IHC) techniques. The clinical and pathological features of these specimens were analyzed. IDO positive, B7-H1 positive, and combined IDO/B7-H1 positive tumors exhibited significant correlations with lymphocytic infiltration, perineural invasion, TNM status, and pathologic grade (p < .05), which tended to show strong correlations with malignant progression of PC. Also, IDO correlated with diabetes mellitus (DM) and HAD scale and B7-H1 correlated with smoke (p < .05). In addition, the correlation analysis indicated that IDO had a positive correlation with B7-H1 (p < .05). Moreover, the results showed that a combination of IDO and B7-H1 expressions could serve as independent prognostic marker after adjusting by Cox proportional hazards regression models (p < .05). IDO and B7-H1 expressions were observed in patient with PC tissues and are important markers for PC malignant progression. A combination of IDO and B7-H1 expression can be served as an independent prognostic marker for PC.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is currently a lack of a well-formed consensus regarding the effects of depression on the survival of glioma patients. A more thorough understanding of such effects may better highlight the importance of recognizing depressive symptoms in this patient population and guide treatment plans in the future. OBJECTIVE The aim of this meta-analysis was to study the effect of depression on glioma patients' survival. METHODS A meta-analysis was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched for studies that reported depression and survival among glioma patients through 11/06/2016. Both random-effects (RE) and fixed-effect (FE) models were used to compare survival outcomes in glioma patients with and without depression. RESULTS Out of 619 identified articles, six were selected for the meta-analysis. Using RE model, the various measures for survival outcomes displayed worsened outcomes for both high and low-grade glioma patients with depression compared to those without depression. For binary survival outcomes, the overall pooled risk ratio for survival was 0.70 (95% CI: 0.47, 1.04; 6 studies; I2 = 54.9%, P-heterogeneity = 0.05) for high grade gliomas (HGG) and 0.28 (95% CI: 0.04, 1.78; I2 = 0%, P-heterogeneity = 1.00; one study) for low grade gliomas (LGG) was. A sub-group analysis in the HGG group by depression timing (pre- versus post-operative) revealed no differences between depression and survival outcomes (P-interaction = 0.47). For continuous survival outcomes, no statistically significant difference was found among the high and low-grade glioma groups (P-interaction = 0.31). The standardized mean difference (SMD) in survival outcomes was -0.56 months (95%CI: -1.13, 0.02; 4 studies, I2 = 89.4%, P-heterogeneity < 0.01) for HGG and -1.69 months (95%CI: -3.26, -0.13; one study; I2 = 0%, P-heterogeneity = 1.00) for LGG. In patients with HGG, the pooled HR of death also showed a borderline significant increased risk of death among depressive patients (HR 1.42, 95% CI: 1.00, 2.01). Results using the FE model were not materially different. CONCLUSIONS Depression was associated with significantly worsened survival regardless of time of diagnosis, especially among patients with high-grade glioma.

Abstract
Background Depression may influence susceptibility to cancer, and the genes and signaling pathways that may mediate this association are unclear. Methods Here, we used isobaric tagging for relative and absolute quantitation, 2-dimensional liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry to compare proteins expressed in hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with or without depression. Results A total of 89 proteins were up-regulated and 44 were down-regulated in patients with depression. HSP90AA1 and HSPA8 were up-regulated, which correlated with elevated levels of VEGF, VEGFR2, PI3K, and AKT1 and reduced levels of caspase 9 and BAD. Disease-free survival rate was significantly lower and risk of tumor recurrence was significantly higher in patients with depression, which may reflect high HSP90AA1/HSPA8 expression. Conclusion These results suggest that the VEGF/VEGFR2 pathway may be associated with HCC recurrence in patients expressing high levels of HSP90AA1/HSPA8.
