Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To describe nightmare phenomenology among community dwelling elderly and to test the hypothesis that reduction in cognitive control is associated with nightmare-related phenomenology including nightmare frequency and severity, greater emotional reactivity, imagery immersion, and dream enactment behaviors (DEBs). METHODS Study 1: Survey with multiple regression and ANOVAs on N = 56 people with frequent nightmares plus N = 62 age- and gender-matched controls to quantify the strength of the association between cognitive control variables and nightmare phenomenology. Study 2: Computational simulation of nightmare phenomenology in relation to cognitive control to simulate the empirical findings and to assess the underlying causal theory through computationally supported causal inference. RESULTS Study 1: Regressions demonstrated a strong association between reduction in cognitive control and more extreme nightmare phenomenology, including severity, frequency, daytime effects, and DEBs. Study 2: The computational simulation of nightmare phenomenology in relation to cognitive control is validated relative to regressions from study 1 and offers computational support for the causal theory explaining the associations in study 1. CONCLUSIONS In aging people, decline in executive cognitive functions, cognitive control, and inhibitory processes reduce cognitive control over emotions, thus contributing to unusual nightmare activity, including more extreme nightmare phenomenology such as more severe nightmares, greater emotional reactivity, deeper imagery immersion, and DEBs.

Abstract
The understanding of the prevalence of sleep problems in older adults can provide a broad and reliable perspective into the occurrence of such issues among older adults. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the worldwide prevalence of sleep problems in community-dwelling older adults. Studies that provide information on the prevalence of sleep problems in community-dwelling older adults (≥60 years) were screened between December 2022 and March 2023. A total of 20,379 studies were identified in database searches, from which 252 were included in this review. These studies covered the last 35 years (from 1988 to 2023) and pooled a sample of 995,544 participants from 36 countries. The most frequent sleep problem worldwide was obstructive sleep apnea (46.0%), followed by poor sleep quality (40.0%), other sleep problems (37.0%), insomnia (29.0%), and excessive daytime sleepiness (19.0%). No significant difference in the prevalence estimates of all sleep problems was observed between the sexes. This systematic review and meta-analysis showed a high prevalence of some sleep problems, mainly obstructive sleep apnea, poor sleep quality, and other sleep problems. Our estimates can be useful for managers and policymakers in planning healthcare strategies for sleep problems aimed at the older population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most of the recent research on nightmare distress and depressive symptoms has focused on adolescents and students, with less research on the nurse population. Emergency department nurses are at high risk for nightmare distress and depressive symptoms, but no studies have been conducted to explore the relationship between the two; thus, further investigation is needed. AIM To understand the relationship between nightmare distress and depressive symptoms among emergency department nurses in China. METHODS A convenience sampling method was used to select 280 emergency department nurses from nine provinces, including Jiangxi, Sichuan, Jiangsu, and Shanxi Provinces. The Chinese version of the Nightmare Distress Questionnaire and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) were administered. RESULTS Emergency department nurses' nightmare distress scores were positively associated with depressive symptom scores (r = 0.732), depressed affect (r = 0.727), somatic symptoms (r = 0.737), and interpersonal difficulty (r = 0.647). Further multiple linear regression analyses showed that education level, work pressure, self-reported health, and CES-D scores were factors that influenced nightmare distress among Chinese emergency department nurses (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Nightmare distress is closely associated with depressive symptoms in Chinese emergency department nurses, and early intervention is recommended for professionals with this type of sleep disorder to reduce the occurrence of depressive symptoms.

Abstract
The Nightmare Disorder Index Questionnaire (NDI) was developed to measure the impact of nightmares. The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of NDI among Chinese adolescents. This study investigated the validity and internal consistency of the Nightmare Disorder Index Chinese (NDI-CV) among 6014 Chinese adolescents who completed the NDI-CV, Nightmare Distress Questionnaire-Chinese Version (NDQ-CV), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Chinese Adolescent Daytime Sleepiness Scale (CADSS), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 Questionnaire (GAD-7), and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). In addition, we investigated the test-retest reliability of the NDI-CV among 423 adolescents who completed a retest of the NDI-CV after a 2-week interval. Finally, NDI-CV demonstrated good psychometric properties in a sample of Chinese adolescents (Cronbach's α coefficient of 0.876), and the 95% confidence interval for the 2-week retest correlation coefficient was 0.675-0.977 (p < 0.001).

Abstract
Background Distressing dreams are associated with faster cognitive decline and increased dementia risk in people with Parkinson's disease (PD). Whether distressing dreams might be associated with cognitive decline and dementia in people without PD is unknown. This study investigated the association between self-reported distressing dream frequency and the risk of cognitive decline and incident dementia in community-dwelling men and women without cognitive impairment or PD. Methods Risk of cognitive decline was evaluated in 605 middle-aged adults (mean age = 50 years [IQR 44-57]; 55·7% female) from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study, who were cognitively normal at baseline, and were followed-up for a maximum of 13 years (IQR 9-10). Cognitive decline was defined as having an annual rate of decline in global cognitive function (measured using five cognitive tests) ≥ 1 standard deviation faster than the mean decline rate from baseline to follow-up. Risk of incident all-cause dementia was evaluated in 2600 older adults (mean age = 83 years [IQR 81-84]; 56·7% female) pooled from the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study (MrOS) and the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures (SOF), who were dementia-free at baseline, and were followed-up for up a maximum of 7 years (IQR 4-5). Incident dementia was based on doctor-diagnosis. Frequency of distressing dreams was assessed in all cohorts at baseline (January 2002 - March 2012) using item 5h of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The association between self-reported distressing dream frequency ("never", "less than weekly", "weekly") and later cognitive outcomes, was evaluated using multivariable logistic regression in both the middle-aged and pooled older adult cohorts. Findings After adjustment for all covariates, a higher frequency of distressing dreams was linearly and statistically significantly associated with higher risk of cognitive decline amongst middle-aged adults (P for trend = 0·016), and higher risk of incident all-cause dementia amongst older adults (P for trend <0·001). Compared with middle-aged adults who reported having no distressing dreams at baseline, those who reported having weekly distressing dreams had a 4-fold risk of experiencing cognitive decline (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 3·99; 95% CI: 1·07, 14·85). Amongst older adults, the difference in dementia risk was 2·2-fold (aOR = 2·21; 95% CI: 1·35, 3·62). In sex-stratified analyses, the associations between distressing dreams and both cognitive outcomes were only statistically significant amongst men. Interpretation Distressing dreams predict cognitive decline and all-cause dementia in middle-aged and older adults without cognitive impairment or PD - especially amongst men. These findings may help to identify individuals at risk of dementia and could facilitate early prevention strategies. Funding The study received no external funding.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nursing is a demanding occupation characterized by dramatic sleep disruptions. Yet most studies on nurses' sleep treat sleep disturbances as a homogenous construct and do not use daily measures to address recall biases. Using person-centered analyses, we examined heterogeneity in nurses' daily sleep patterns in relation to psychological and physical health. METHODS Nurses (N = 392; 92% female, mean age = 39.54 years) completed 14 daily sleep diaries to assess sleep duration, efficiency, quality, and nightmare severity, as well as measures of psychological functioning and a blood draw to assess inflammatory markers interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP). Using recommended fit indices and a 3-step approach, latent profile analysis was used to identify the best-fitting class solution. RESULTS The best-fitting solution suggested three classes: (1) "Poor Overall Sleep" (11.2%), (2) "Nightmares Only" (8.4%), (3) "Good Overall Sleep" (80.4%). Compared to nurses in the Good Overall Sleep class, nurses in the Poor Overall Sleep or Nightmares Only classes were more likely to be shift workers and had greater stress, PTSD symptoms, depression, anxiety, and insomnia severity. In multivariate models, every one-unit increase in insomnia severity and IL-6 was associated with a 33% and a 21% increase in the odds of being in the Poor Overall Sleep compared to the Good Overall Sleep class, respectively. CONCLUSION Nurses with more severe and diverse sleep disturbances experience worse health and may be in greatest need of sleep-related and other clinical interventions.

Abstract
PURPOSE The COVID-19 pandemic affects mental health and sleep, resulting in frequent nightmares. Therefore, identifying factors associated with nightmare frequency is important, as it can indicate mental health issues. The study aimed to investigate increases in nightmare frequency comparing the pre-pandemic and pandemic period, and identify its risk factors. Further, the mediating role of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms between the pandemic and nightmares is explored. PATIENTS AND METHODS For this cross-sectional survey data were obtained via self-rating online survey (ICOSS: details in Partinen et al, 2021), which was open to anyone older than 18 years. The final volunteer sample consisted of 15,292 participants, divided according to their nightmare frequency (high: ≥1-2 nights/week; low: <1-2 nights/week). A total of 9100 participants were excluded if answers on variables of interest were missing or receiving rewards for participation. Chi-square tests identified changes of nightmare frequency. Predictors of high nightmare frequency were assessed using logistic regression and presented as Odds Ratios. Post-hoc mediation models were used to investigate the role of post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). RESULTS The mean age was 41.63 (SD=16.55) with 64.05% females. High nightmare frequency increased significantly from 13.24% to 22.35% during the pandemic. Factors associated with it included self-reported PTSS (OR=2.11), other mental disorders and various sleep disorders or problems. Financial burden due to the pandemic, confinement, having had COVID-19, and work situation during the pandemic were associated with nightmare frequency, those relations were partly mediated through PTSS. CONCLUSION Our results display the pandemic influence on nightmare frequency, which in turn connects to multiple mental health and sleep factors. These relations were partly mediated through PTSS. The COVID-19 pandemic appears to have caused traumatization of a substantial proportion of society. Health care workers should consider nightmares in their screening routines, as it might indicate PTSS and/or other mental and sleep disorders.

Abstract
Background Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with alterations to the phenomenology of dreaming - including an increased frequency of distressing dreams. Whether distressing dreams may precede the development of PD is unknown. This study investigated the association between frequent distressing dreams and the risk of incident PD. Methods 3818 men aged 67 years or older from the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study (MrOS), a population-based cohort from the USA, who were free from PD at baseline (December 2003 - April 2011) and completed item 5h of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index - which probes the frequency of distressing dreams in the past month, were included in this analysis. Incident PD was based on doctor diagnosis. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) for incident PD according to distressing dream frequency, with adjustment for potential confounders. Findings During a mean follow-up of 7·3 years, 91 (2·4%) cases of incident PD were identified. Participants with frequent distressing dreams at baseline had a 2-fold risk for incident PD (OR, 2·01; 95% CI, 1·1-3·6, P = 0.02). When stratified by follow-up time, frequent distressing dreams were associated with a greater than 3-fold risk for incident PD during the first 5 years after baseline (OR, 3·38; 95% CI, 1·3-8·7; P = 0·01), however no effect was found during the subsequent 7 years (OR, 1·55; 95% CI, 0·7-3·3; P = 0·26). Interpretation In this prospective cohort, frequent distressing dreams were associated with an increased risk for incident PD. The association was only significant within the 5 years prior to diagnosis, which suggests that frequent distressing dreams may be a prodromal symptom of PD. Abstract
PURPOSE Nightmares are common, especially in pediatric populations and psychiatric patients. Nightmares are associated with daytime distress and negative health outcomes. The data on the prevalence and psychopathological profiles of nightmares in Chinese adolescents are limited. This study examined age and gender differences in nightmare frequency and associated psychopathological problems in a large sample of Chinese adolescents. METHODS A total of 11,831 adolescent students (mean age = 14.9, 12-18 years) participated in the baseline survey of Shandong Adolescent Behavior and Health Cohort. Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire to report their nightmare frequency, trait anger, hopelessness, and multiple domains of behavioral/emotional problems. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to examine psychopathological problems in relation to nightmare frequency. RESULTS Of the sample, 45.2% reported having nightmares at least once in the past month and 7.9% at least once/week. Girls reported more frequent nightmares than boys. Nightmare frequency significantly declined with age for both boys and girls. Mean scores on trait anger, hopelessness, attention, internalizing problems, and externalizing problems significantly increased with nightmare frequency. Frequent nightmares (at least once/week) were significantly associated with 2-4-fold increased likelihood of behavioral/emotional problems after adjusting for adolescent and family covariates. CONCLUSION Nightmares are prevalent in Chinese adolescents. Frequent nightmares are associated with multiple domains of psychopathological problems. Assessment and intervention of frequent nightmares should be incorporated into routine clinical practice and mental health services in adolescents.

Abstract
Background Dream content alterations in Parkinson's disease (PD) are associated with motor and cognitive dysfunction cross-sectionally. Although recent studies suggest abnormal dream content in PD might also predict cognitive decline, the relationship between dream content and motor decline in PD remains unknown. Objective To investigate whether abnormal dream content in PD predicts both motor and cognitive decline. Methods Data were obtained from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative cohort study. Patients were evaluated at baseline and at the 60-month follow-up, with validated clinical scales, including the REM Sleep Behavior Disorder Screening Questionnaire (RBDSQ), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and the Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale Part III (MDS-UPDRS III). Patients were dichotomized using RBDSQ item 2, which inquires whether they frequently experience aggression in their dreams. Regression analyses were used to assess whether frequent aggressive dreams at baseline predicted longitudinal changes in MDS-UPDRS III and MoCA scores as well as progression to Hoehn and Yahr stage 3 (H&Y ≥ 3) and cognitive impairment. Results Of the patients, 58/224 (25.9%) reported frequent aggressive dreams at baseline. Aggressive dreams predicted a faster increase in MDS-UPDRS III scores (β = 4.64; P = 0.007) and a faster decrease in MoCA scores (β = -1.49; P = 0.001). Furthermore, they conferred a 6-fold and 2-fold risk for progressing to H&Y ≥ 3 (odds ratio [OR] = 5.82; P = 0.005) and cognitive impairment (OR, 2.35; P = 0.023) within 60 months. These associations remained robust when adjusting for potential confounders. Conclusions This study demonstrates for the first time that frequent aggressive dreams in newly diagnosed PD may independently predict early motor and cognitive decline.
