Abstract
Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a growing public health concern linked to the increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome, including obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D). MASLD remains a significant clinical challenge due to the absence of effective therapeutic interventions. Intermittent fasting (IF) has emerged as a promising non-pharmacological strategy for managing MASLD. Although the exact mechanisms underpinning the possible beneficial effects of IF on MASLD are not yet fully elucidated, the gut microbiota and its metabolic byproducts are increasingly recognized as potential mediators of these effects. The gut-liver axis may act as an important conduit through which IF exerts its beneficial influence on hepatic function. This review comprehensively examines the impact of various IF protocols on gut microbiota composition, investigating the resultant alterations in microbial diversity and metabolomic profiles, and their potential implications for liver health and the improvement of MASLD.

Abstract
Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effects of different nutritional strategies, specifically intermittent fasting (IF) combined with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) versus a low-calorie diet (LCD), on body composition, physical performance, and the orexinergic system in postmenopausal women. Methods: A randomized controlled trial involving thirty postmenopausal women (mean age 57.50 ± 6.50 years) was conducted over eight weeks, comparing the two dietary approaches alongside an 8-week HIIT program. Body composition was assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Performance metrics included handgrip strength and the 6-min walking test (6MWT). Salivary samples were analyzed for Orexin-A (OX-A) levels pre- and post-intervention. Results: Significant improvements in health metrics, such as heart rate (HR) and endurance, were found, with mean HR changes showing a significant difference (F = 5.943, p = 0.033) between the groups at T1. Orexin-A levels reflected significant metabolic regulation shifts in relation to other variables, showing a change from baseline to post-intervention values at T1 (F = 10,931, p = 0.033). Flexibility (sit and reach) significantly improved by 6% (p < 0.05), as well as VO2 max (10%, p < 0.05), both highlighted as key predictors of overall health outcomes. Additionally, Cohen's d analyses indicated that the dietary groups exhibited notable differences in endurance, with the LCD group showing a Cohen's d of -0.90, suggesting a large effect size compared with the control group. Conclusions: The combination of IF and HIIT is an effective nutritional strategy for enhancing body composition and physical performance in postmenopausal women, potentially mediated by changes in the orexinergic system. Further research is warranted to explore long-term effects and underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Background: Intermittent fasting (IF) has been increasingly recognized for its potential to mitigate obesity and diabetes. However, it remains unclear whether IF can alleviate metabolic disorder-induced male infertility. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of IF to improve fertility outcomes in obese mice. Methods: Eight-week-old C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 24 weeks to induce obesity, followed by alternate-day fasting for 6 weeks. We assessed obesity-related metabolic changes and fertility issues postintervention. Comprehensive metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses of serum and testicular samples were used to identify significant metabolic pathway modifications attributable to IF. Results: IF effectively alleviated obesity-induced male infertility, demonstrating significant attenuation of body weight gain and restoration of testicular morphology. IF normalized hypogonadism-associated testosterone depletion and improved sperm parameters. Testis multi-omics integration revealed IF-mediated reprogramming of testicular purine metabolism, coupled with coordinated regulation of glycolipid metabolism and inflammatory-immune homeostasis. Reproductive competence was enhanced as evidenced by statistically elevated successful mating rates and embryonic developmental progression. Serum metabolomics further identified metabolites involved in amino acid metabolism, glycolipid metabolism, and inflammation (e.g., methionine, BCAA, glutathione, and spermidine) may serve as potential targets for treating obesity-related metabolic disorders. Additionally, multidimensional analysis highlighted the crucial role of allantoin in alleviating obesity and related reproductive dysfunction. Conclusions: IF not only resolves obesity-induced metabolic issues but also alleviates male infertility by regulating bioactive metabolites and gene expression linked to glycolipid metabolism, energy homeostasis, and immune responses in the testis. Our study provides a theoretical basis for IF as a clinical treatment for obesity-induced male infertility.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative disorders are straining public health worldwide. During neurodegenerative disease progression, aberrant neuronal network activity, bioenergetic impairment, adaptive neural plasticity impairment, dysregulation of neuronal Ca2+ homeostasis, oxidative stress, and immune inflammation manifest as characteristic pathological changes in the cellular milieu of the brain. There is no drug for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, and therefore, strategies/treatments for the prevention or treatment of neurodegenerative disorders are urgently needed. Intermittent fasting (IF) is characterized as an eating pattern that alternates between periods of fasting and eating, requiring fasting durations that vary depending on the specific protocol implemented. During IF, depletion of liver glycogen stores leads to the production of ketone bodies from fatty acids derived from adipocytes, thereby inducing an altered metabolic state accompanied by cellular and molecular adaptive responses within neural networks in the brain. At the cellular level, adaptive responses can promote the generation of synapses and neurons. At the molecular level, IF triggers the activation of associated transcription factors, thereby eliciting the expression of protective proteins. Consequently, this regulatory process governs central and peripheral metabolism, oxidative stress, inflammation, mitochondrial function, autophagy, and the gut microbiota, all of which contribute to the amelioration of neurodegenerative disorders. Emerging evidence suggests that weight regulation significantly contributes to the neuroprotective effects of IF. By alleviating obesity-related factors such as blood-brain barrier dysfunction, neuroinflammation, and β-amyloid accumulation, IF enhances metabolic flexibility and insulin sensitivity, further supporting its potential in mitigating neurodegenerative disorders. The present review summarizes animal and human studies investigating the role and underlying mechanisms of IF in physiology and pathology, with an emphasis on its therapeutic potential. Furthermore, we provide an overview of the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in regulating brain energy metabolism through IF, highlighting its potential applications in neurodegenerative disorders. Ultimately, our findings offer novel insights into the preventive and therapeutic applications of IF for neurodegenerative disorders.

Abstract
Worldwide, almost 10 million cancer deaths occurred in 2022, a number that is expected to rise to 16.3 million by 2040. Primary prevention has long been acknowledged as a crucial approach to reducing cancer incidence. In fact, between 30 and 50 percent of all tumors are known to be preventable by eating a healthy diet, staying active, avoiding alcohol, smoking, and being overweight. Accordingly, many international organizations have created tumor prevention guidelines, which underlie the importance of following a diet that emphasizes eating plant-based foods while minimizing the consumption of red/processed meat, sugars, processed foods, and alcohol. However, further research is needed to define the relationship between the effect of specific diets or nutritional components on cancer prevention. Interestingly, reductions in food intake and dietetic restrictions can extend the lifespan of yeast, nematodes, flies, and rodents. Despite controversial results in humans, those approaches have the potential to ameliorate health via direct and indirect effects on specific signaling pathways involved in cancer onset. Here, we describe the latest knowledge on the cancer-preventive potential of dietary restrictions and the biochemical processes involved. Molecular, preclinical, and clinical studies evaluating the effects of different fasting strategies will also be reviewed.

Abstract
Research into the effects of calorie restriction continues to intrigue those interested in whether it may allow humans to live longer and healthier lives. Animal studies of continuous calorie restriction (CCR) and fasting have demonstrated substantial advantages to health and longevity. However, concerns remain about the impact of restricting calorie intake on human health and cognition. Given the emerging evidence of cognitive impairments in eating disorders, studies investigating restricted calorie intake in healthy humans (in an ethical way) may also have implications for understanding restrictive eating disorders. In this review, the published literature on the impact of CCR and fasting on cognitive function in healthy human participants is synthesized. Of the 33 studies of CCR and fasting in humans identified, 23 demonstrated significant changes in cognition. Despite variation across the cognitive domains, results suggest CCR benefits inhibition, processing speed, and working memory, but may lead to impairments in cognitive flexibility. The results of fasting studies suggest fasting is associated with impairments in cognitive flexibility and psychomotor abilities. Overall, the results of these studies suggest the degree (ie, the severity) of calorie restriction is what most likely predicts cognitive improvements as opposed to impairments. For individuals engaging in sustained restriction, this may have serious, irreversible consequences. However, there are mixed findings regarding the impact of CCR and fasting on this aspect of human functioning, suggesting further research is required to understand the costs and benefits of different types of calorie restriction.

Abstract
Intermittent fasting focuses on the timing of eating rather than diet quality or energy intake, with evidence supporting its effects on weight loss and improvements in cardiometabolic outcomes in adults with obesity. However, there is limited evidence for its feasibility and efficacy in young people. To address this, a scoping review was conducted to examine intermittent fasting regimens in individuals aged 10 to 25 for the treatment of obesity focusing on methodology, intervention parameters, outcomes, adherence, feasibility, and efficacy. Due to the paucity of evidence in this age group, to adequately assess feasibility and adherence, all published studies of intermittent fasting in this age category, regardless of weight status and treatment intention, were included in the review. The review included 34 studies (28 interventional studies and 6 observational studies) with 893 participants aged 12 to 25. Interventions varied with 9 studies in cohorts with obesity utilizing intermittent fasting as an obesity treatment. Thirteen studies utilized 8-h time-restricted eating. Primary outcomes included cardiometabolic risk factors (7/28), anthropometric measurements (7/28), body composition (5/28), muscular performance (4/28), feasibility (1/28), and others (4/28). All 9 studies conducted in young people with obesity reported some degree of weight loss, although the comparator groups varied significantly. This review underscores the various utilizations of intermittent fasting in this age group and highlights its potential in treating obesity. However, the findings emphasize the need for rigorous studies with standardized frameworks for feasibility to ensure comparability and determine intermittent fasting's practicality in this age group depending on the treatment outcome of interest.

Abstract
In recent years, the influence of dietary-related factors on neurodegenerative diseases has received considerable attention in the academic community, notably involving the food additive sodium nitrite (NaNO2) and intermittent fasting behavior. However, the effects of NaNO2 and intermittent fasting on spatial learning and memory have not been thoroughly investigated. This study conducted a controlled experiment to explore the impact of NaNO2 and intermittent fasting on the hyperphosphorylation of hippocampal neurofilament (NF) and tau proteins, as well as spatial learning and memory in rats. Through Morris water maze experiments, the spatial learning and memory abilities of rats were assessed, while immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry techniques were employed to evaluate the phosphorylation levels and distribution of NF and tau proteins in the rat hippocampus. NaNO2 was found to induce hyperphosphorylation of hippocampal NF and tau proteins at the Ser396/404 sites, which was accompanied by a decline in spatial learning and memory abilities. Conversely, intermittent fasting ameliorated the NaNO2-induced hyperphosphorylation of hippocampal neurofilaments and the decline in learning and memory abilities, with no discernible effect on hippocampal tau protein hyperphosphorylation.

Abstract
Background The escalating global obesity epidemic requires comprehensive investigations for effective weight management strategies. Understanding the patterns, barriers, and facilitators of dietary interventions is crucial for developing effective weight management protocols. This research aims to assess dietary modification interventions among weight loss subjects in Tamilnadu, South India. Specific objectives included evaluating various weight loss interventions, analyzing dietary patterns adopted by subjects, and examining characteristics, barriers, and facilitators associated with specific dietary modification approaches. Methodology A cross-sectional study was conducted among 432 participants from Tamilnadu, South India. The research employed a comprehensive data collection approach, gathering information on demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, dietary modification patterns, and intervention outcomes. Participants were categorized based on their chosen dietary interventions, particularly distinguishing between intermittent fasting and alternative dietary approaches. The study systematically evaluated various parameters, including regular adherence, physiological effects, psychological impacts, and barriers to maintenance. Statistical analysis utilized chi-square and Fischer's exact tests for categorical variables, while independent t-tests were employed for continuous variables. Results This study encompassed 432 participants, with demographically diverse participants characterized by a predominance of urban residents (295, 68.3%), highly educated individuals (383, 88.6%), and students (190, 44%). The mean age was 27.93 years, with a mean body mass index of 25.21 kg/m2. Regarding dietary intervention objectives, the study revealed that 289 (66.9%) were not engaged in any healthcare intervention, while 102 (23.6%) pursued intermittent fasting and 41 (9.5%) adopted alternative dietary strategies such as Paleo and ketogenic diets. Among participants implementing dietary modifications, the mean intervention duration was 5.21 months, ranging from half a month to 60 months. Intermittent fasting participants exhibited statistically significant characteristics, including a younger mean age (27.09 years) compared with alternative diet groups (37.37 years). Notably, 73 (71.6%) reported significant weight loss, with 69 (67.6%) experiencing weight regain during non-adherence. Psychological and physiological benefits were prominently observed, with 73 (71.6%) reporting mood improvements, 71 (69.6%) experiencing enhanced concentration, and 72 (70.6%) noting improved bowel habits. Barriers to dietary modifications included timing challenges (50, 49%), family mealtime conflicts (43, 42.2%), and work schedule interruptions (39, 38.2%). Conclusion The research provides comprehensive insights into dietary modification patterns among young Indian adults, highlighting intermittent fasting's potential as an effective weight management strategy. The findings underscore the complex interplay between dietary choices, individual characteristics, and holistic health outcomes. While demonstrating promising weight loss and cognitive benefits, the study emphasizes the necessity of personalized, context-sensitive nutritional interventions. These insights contribute significantly to understanding dietary modification dynamics and inform the development of more effective, tailored weight management strategies.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The impact of dietary habits on cognitive function is increasingly gaining attention. The review is to discuss how caloric restriction (CR) and intermittent fasting (IF) can enhance cognitive function in healthy states through multiple pathways that interact with one another. Secondly, to explore the effects of CR and IF on cognitive function in conditions of neurodegenerative diseases, obesity diabetes and aging, as well as potential synergistic effects in combination with exercise to prevent cognitively related neurodegenerative diseases. RECENT FINDINGS With age, the human brain ages and develops corresponding neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and epilepsy, which in turn trigger cognitive impairment. Recent research indicates that the impact of diet and exercise on cognitive function is increasingly gaining attention. The benefits of exercise for cognitive function and brain plasticity are numerous, and future research can examine the efficacy of particular dietary regimens during physical activity when combined with diet which can prevent cognitive decline.

Abstract
Intermittent fasting (IF) refers to periodic fasting routines, that caloric intake is minimized not by meal portion size reduction but by intermittently eliminating ingestion of one or several consecutive meals. IF can instigate comprehensive and multifaceted alterations in energy metabolism, these metabolic channels may aboundingly function as primordial mechanisms that interface with the immune system, instigating intricate immune transformations. This review delivers a comprehensive understanding of IF, paying particular attention to its influence on the immune system, thus seeking to bridge these two research domains. We explore how IF effects lipid metabolism, hormonal levels, circadian rhythm, autophagy, oxidative stress, gut microbiota, and intestinal barrier integrity, and conjecture about the mechanisms orchestrating the intersect between these factors and the immune system. Moreover, the review includes research findings on the implications of IF on the immune system and patients burdened with autoimmune diseases.

Abstract
Intermittent fasting (IF) modifies cell- and tissue-specific immunometabolic responses that dictate metabolic flexibility and inflammation during obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Fasting forces periods of metabolic flexibility and necessitates increased use of different substrates. IF can lower metabolic inflammation and improve glucose metabolism without lowering obesity and can influence time-dependent, compartmentalized changes in immunity. Liver, adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, and immune cells communicate to relay metabolic and immune signals during fasting. Here we review the connections between metabolic and immune cells to explain the divergent effects of IF compared with classic caloric restriction (CR) strategies. We also explore how the immunometabolism of metabolic diseases dictates certain IF outcomes, where the gut microbiota triggers changes in immunity and metabolism during fasting.

Abstract
Obesity is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally. While the prevalence of obesity has been increasing, the incidence of its related complications including dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease (CVD) has also been rising. Recent research has focused on modalities aimed at reducing obesity. Several modalities have been suggested including behavioral and dietary changes, medications, and bariatric surgery. These modalities differ in their effectiveness and invasiveness, with dietary changes gaining more interest due to their minimal risks compared to other modalities. Specifically, intermittent fasting (IF) has been gaining interest in the past decade. IF is characterized by cycles of alternating fasting and eating windows, with several different forms practiced. IF has been shown to reduce weight and alleviate obesity-related complications. Our review of clinical and experimental studies explores the effects of IF on the lipid profile, white adipose tissue (WAT) dynamics, and the gut microbiome. Notably, IF corrects dyslipidemia, reduces WAT accumulation, and decreases inflammation, which reduces CVD and obesity. This comprehensive analysis details the protective metabolic role of IF, advocating for its integration into public health practices.

Abstract
Energy restriction (ER) is a nutrition method to reduce the amount of energy intake while maintaining adequate nutrition. In clinical medicine, applications of ER have been implicated in longevity, mortality, metabolic, immune, and psychological health. However, there are limited studies showing the clinical benefit of ER within the immediate surgical setting. A specific, clinically oriented summary of the potential applications of ER is needed to optimize surgery outcomes for patients. The purpose of this article is to examine how ER can be used for perioperative optimization to improve outcomes for the patient and surgeon. It will also explore how these outcomes can feasibly fit in with enhanced recovery after surgery protocols and can be used as a method for nutrition optimization in surgery. Despite evidence of caloric restriction improving outcomes in critically ill surgical patients, there is not enough evidence to conclude that ER, perioperatively across noncritically ill cohorts, improves postoperative morbidity and mortality in elective surgeries. Nevertheless, a contemporary account of how ER techniques may have a significant role in reducing risk factors of adverse surgical outcomes in this cohort, for example, by encouraging preoperative weight loss contributing to decreased operating times, is reviewed.

Abstract
We propose that intermittent fasting (time-restricted eating), in agreement with the conclusions of other biologists, as revealed in recent publications, promotes the achievement of numerous health benefits including the extension of human and animal lifespans. Background: There is evidence, obtained both with animal model systems and with humans, that intermittent fasting has health benefits. These benefits include extended longevity, weight loss, and counteracting various disease conditions. Such procedures positively influence the benefits of human tissue-specific microbiomes and minimize the consequences of organellar apoptosis. Key Messages: In this review, we attempt to summarize the predominant evidence, published in the scientific literature, relevant to the conclusions that in general, and in many specific instances, intermittent fasting has long-term benefits to animals, including humans, with respect to overall and specific organismal health and longevity.

Abstract
Intermittent fasting (IF) focuses on the timing of eating rather than diet quality or energy intake, with evidence supporting its effects on weight loss and cardiometabolic outcomes in adults. However, there is limited evidence for its efficacy in adolescents and emerging adults. To address this, a scoping review examined IF regimens in individuals aged 10 to 25, focusing on methodology, intervention parameters, outcomes, adherence, feasibility, and efficacy. The review included 39 studies with 731 participants aged 15 to 25. Methodologies varied, with 18 studies on time-restricted eating and others requiring caloric restriction. Primary outcomes included cardiometabolic risk factors (11/29), body composition (9/29), anthropometric measurements (8/29), and feasibility (2/29). Most studies reported significant weight loss. This review underscores IF's potential in treating obesity in this age group but highlights the need for rigorous studies with standardized frameworks for feasibility to ensure comparability and determine IF's practicality in this age group.

Abstract
Intermittent fasting (IF) is a dietary approach that has gained popularity in recent years. More and more Spanish people are following this eating pattern, which consists of alternating periods of fasting with periods of food intake. Its benefits include improved metabolic and vascular health and weight loss. OBJECTIVES 1. To study the prevalence of IF among the Spanish population. 2. To explore how demographic factors influence the choice to adopt this dietary approach. METHODS A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on the Spanish population using the NutSo-HH questionnaire, which was constructed, validated, and disseminated by the research team through a non-probabilistic snowball sampling approach, collecting socio-demographic data and nutritional, social and lifestyle habits of the population. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS A valid sample of 22,181 people participated, of whom 4.59% (n = 1018) said they practiced IF. The data show that more middle-aged men than women practice IF. In addition, individuals who follow IF methods are less likely to have no control over their food intake, are less scared to gain weight and have a higher body image, but no differences were found related to unhealthy food and nights out. There were also no significant differences in terms of the level of education, income, size of municipality, or region of residence. In conclusion, a person who practices IF seems to have adopted a healthier lifestyle and social habits.

Abstract
Intermittent fasting (IF), one of the most popular diets, can regulate inflammation and promote health; however, the detailed molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. The present review aims to provide an overview of recent preclinical and clinical studies that have examined the effect of IF on inflammasome signaling, and to discuss the translational gap between preclinical and clinical studies. Three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase) were searched to identify all relevant preclinical and clinical studies up to October 30, 2022. A total of 1544 studies were identified through the database searches, and 29 preclinical and 10 clinical studies were included. Twenty-three of the 29 preclinical studies reported that IF treatment could reduce inflammasome activation in neurological diseases, metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, immune and inflammatory diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, and pulmonary diseases, and 7 of the 10 clinical studies demonstrated reduced inflammasome activation after IF intervention in both healthy and obese participants. Among various IF regimens, time-restricted eating seemed to be the most effective one in terms of inflammasome regulation, and the efficacy of IF might increase over time. This review highlights the regulatory effect of IF on inflammasome activation in health and disease. Future studies using different IF regimens, in various populations, are needed in order to evaluate its potential to be used alone or as an adjunct therapy in humans to improve health and counteract diseases.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to assess the impact of two lengths of Nordic walking (NW) training interventions combined with time-restricted eating (TRE) on improving body-composition parameters, lipid profiles, and levels of selected adipokines in women with elevated body mass. Overweight and obese women (n = 55, age: 21-85) were recruited. Four groups were selected: 6 weeks (SG6, n = 13) and 12 weeks intervention (SG12, n = 13); and two control groups: CON6 (n = 13) and CON12 (n = 13). The training sessions took place three times a week (60 min each) and were conducted outdoors under the supervision of a professional coach. The training intensity was determined individually. The extended NW program combined with TRE induced a significant weight reduction in SG12 by 1.96 kg (p = 0.010) and fat tissue by 1.64 kg (p = 0.05). The proposed interventions did not affect LBM, TBW [kg], VFA, and lipid profile. The LDL/HDL ratio changed with a small size effect. The leptin concentration differed between groups (p = 0.006), but not over time. For resistin, the differentiating factor was time (p = 0.019), with lower results observed after the intervention. The change in leptin concentration was negatively correlated with its baseline concentration (p = 0.025). Extended to 12 weeks, this intervention allows for an improvement in body composition. Neither 6 nor 12 weeks of training and fasting affected the lipoprotein profile. It is, therefore, indicated to recommend prolonged training protocols and to inform patients that beneficial effects will be seen only after prolonged use of training and time-restricted eating.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study is to examine the effects of Ramadan fasting on melatonin, cortisol, and serotonin levels. METHODS In this study, the blood of 19 healthy male individuals between the ages of 26 and 51, registered in Agri (Turkey) Family Health Center and fasting during Ramadan, was studied. The study was carried out in 2021-2022. The SPSS-22 package program was used in the analysis of the data. Wilcoxon analysis was used in the study. RESULTS It was determined that the pre-test-post-test melatonin and cortisol levels of the individuals were not statistically significant (p>0.05). It was determined that the pre-test-post-test serotonin difference of the individuals was statistically significant (p<0.05). CONCLUSION It has been determined that Ramadan fasting increases the serotonin level of individuals but does not change the levels of melatonin and cortisol. It was determined that the level of happiness of individuals increased after Ramadan fasting. Longitudinal studies on the effects of Ramadan fasting are recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is known as a chronic systemic autoimmune disorder that primarily targets synovial joints, and may cause pain and functional limitations. Studies show diet can have beneficial effects on symptoms and oxidative stress of this disease. Intermittent fasting (IF) is a dietary approach with cycles of fasting and intake. The current study aims to investigate the effect of IF on quality of life, clinical symptoms, inflammation, and oxidative stress in overweight and obese postmenopausal women with RA. METHODS The current study is a randomized clinical trial, in which 44 patients with mild to moderate severity of RA will be randomly allocated to receive either IF (n = 22) or the usual diet (n = 22) for 8 weeks. Anthropometric measures and biochemical indicators including serum concentrations of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), c-reactive protein (CRP), and total oxidant and antioxidant capacity (TOC and TAC) will be assessed at the baseline and end of the study. Also, disease severity will be assessed by Disease Activity Score-28 (DAS-28) and clinical disease activity index (CDAI), and disability index will be assessed by Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (HAQ-DI) questionnaire. DISCUSSION Studies show fasting has beneficial effects on inflammatory markers and results in an improvement in the health of different populations. Literature review shows it seems there is no study in this field to evaluate the effects of IF on RA patients, and they are limited to other types of fasting. However, studies show IF can have many positive effects on chronic and autoimmune diseases. Therefore, IF may have positive effects on these patients. TRIAL REGISTRATION IRCT20230217057441N1. Abstract
Background The present study investigates the impact of oxidative stress after bariatric surgery in patients with obesity. This field of study has gained great interest in recent years due to the role that oxidative stress plays in metabolic diseases. Obesity, by itself, can generate an increase in reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, intensifying cellular damage and promoting the progression of adverse metabolic conditions. In this context, bariatric surgery emerges as a candidate capable of modifying oxidative stress biomarkers, facilitating the patient's metabolic recovery. Methods A systematic review was carried out, identifying 30 studies found in databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. It looked at the link between oxidative stress and recovery after bariatric surgery in patients. The selection of studies was based on the measurement of oxidative stress biomarkers before and after surgical intervention. Results The results reveal a significant decrease in oxidative stress biomarkers after bariatric surgery. However, a notable variability in antioxidant activity is observed between different patients, as well as a significant influence of comorbidities. Conclusions Bariatric surgery is postulated as an effective intervention in reducing oxidative stress in patients with obesity, enhancing antioxidant activity and improving patient recovery. This finding highlights the importance of considering oxidative stress management as an integral part of postoperative care, suggesting the need to implement complementary treatment strategies to optimize health outcomes.

Abstract
Renewed interest in tumor metabolism sparked an enthusiasm for dietary interventions to prevent and treat cancer. Changes in diet impact circulating nutrient levels in the plasma and the tumor microenvironment, and preclinical studies suggest that dietary approaches, including caloric and nutrient restrictions, can modulate tumor initiation, progression, and metastasis. Cancers are heterogeneous in their metabolic dependencies and preferred energy sources and can be addicted to glucose, fructose, amino acids, or lipids for survival and growth. This dependence is influenced by tumor type, anatomical location, tissue of origin, aberrant signaling, and the microenvironment. This review summarizes nutrient dependencies and the related signaling pathway activations that provide targets for nutritional interventions. We examine popular dietary approaches used as adjuvants to anticancer therapies, encompassing caloric restrictions, including time-restricted feeding, intermittent fasting, fasting-mimicking diets (FMDs), and nutrient restrictions, notably the ketogenic diet. Despite promising results, much of the knowledge on dietary restrictions comes from in vitro and animal studies, which may not accurately reflect real-life situations. Further research is needed to determine the optimal duration, timing, safety, and efficacy of dietary restrictions for different cancers and treatments. In addition, well-designed human trials are necessary to establish the link between specific metabolic vulnerabilities and targeted dietary interventions. However, low patient compliance in clinical trials remains a significant challenge.

Abstract
Introduction 'Meal patterns' refers to eating frequency, snacking, regularity, and timing. Here also including intermittent fasting. The effect of meal patterns on health is inconsistent and when updating the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023 (NNR2023), summarizing the evidence is important. Aims To describe the evidence for the role of meal patterns on bodyweight, body composition, and cardiovascular risk factors (i.e. blood pressure and lipid- and glukose metabolism) in healthy people living with normal weight, overweight, or obesity in all age groups. Methods An initial search in PubMed found 481 reviews, of which 104 were identified based on titles. Of these, 47 were excluded based on title and abstracts. Of the remaining 57 reviews, 16 were included reporting search terms and inclusion/exclusion criteria. In addition, 8 reviews from reference list or known by authors were included. In total, 24 reviews were relevant. Cochrane Library was searched with no results. Results All reviews were rated low or critically low (AMSTAR 2). No consistent findings on eating frequency and body weight or composition were found in children/adolescents or adults. In snacking, mixed results were found, although among adults, some consistent results showed positive associations between snacking and body weight. In regularity, breakfast skipping showed mixed results in children/adolescents on body weight and composition. Among adults, randomized controlled trials on breakfast skipping showed a minor impact on improved weight loss. In prospective studies on timing, lower energy intake during late afternoon/evening was related to less body weight. Intermittent fasting reduced body weight but was not superior to continuous energy restrictions. Cardiovascular risk factors were assessed in a minority of the reviews, and despite some beneficial effects, the evidence was limited. Conclusion Given the overall low to critically low quality of the reviews, the evidence is limited and inconclusive. No consistent results providing evidence for setting recommendations for meal patterns were shown. In this regard, meal patterns may vary within the context of an energy balanced and nutritionally adequate diet.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to investigate the impact of time-restricted meal intake (TRM) on anthropometric and biochemical parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS A total of 400 patients diagnosed with T2DM were selected from the Endocrinology Department at King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, based on the American Diabetes Association (ADA) guidelines and specific criteria. A total of 127 patients were lost to follow-up, resulting in 273 patients who completed the study. The patients were randomly assigned to two groups: the TRM group (consenting to have an early dinner at 7 pm) and the control group (non-TRM/late-night eater group). Baseline data were recorded, and follow-up assessments were conducted at six months, 12 months, and 18 months. Informed consent was obtained, and a diet chart was regularly maintained and updated. RESULTS The TRM group experienced a significant weight loss of 3.88 kg (5.45%) and a substantial reduction in BMI by 1.5 units (5.26%). In contrast, the non-TRM/control group had smaller reductions in weight (1.36 kg, 1.77%) and BMI (0.5 units, 1.65%). TRM group showed significant reductions in fasting blood sugar levels by 33.9 mg/dl (21.17%), postprandial blood sugar levels by 94.6 mg/dl (38.88%), and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels by 1.37 (15.87%). These improvements were significantly greater than the reductions observed in the control group, which had decreases of 29.3 mg/dl (17.85%) in fasting blood sugar levels, 41.6 mg/dl (16.84%) in postprandial blood sugar levels, and 0.59 (6.89%) in HbA1c levels. CONCLUSION Our findings underscore the potential of TRM as an effective strategy for weight management and glycemic control in patients with T2DM, even in a long-term context. These results support time-restricted eating as a sustainable lifestyle modification for managing chronic metabolic diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intermittent fasting (IF) is a commonly used dietary practice that alternates between periods of unrestricted dietary consumption and abstinence from caloric intake. IF reduces caloric intake along with metabolic switch from utilization of glucose to fatty acids and ketones and resulting in reduction in adiposity and subsequently insulin resistance. Thus, it has been hypothesized that IF regimens can improve body composition in obese and overweight individuals. AIM To assess the effect of IF on lipid biokinetics in obese and overweight patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). PATIENTS AND METHODS Thirty overweight or obese T2D patients were recruited from the diabetes outpatient clinics at the Specialized Medical Hospital, Mansoura University. Patients were subjected to time restricted fasting for 16 h (from dawn to sunset) during Ramadan. Anthropometric data were measured for participants before and 3 weeks after Ramadan fasting. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG), HbA1c, lipid profile, leptin, beta hydroxybutyrate (βHB) and high sensitive CRP levels were measured 1 week before and 3 weeks after Ramadan fasting. RESULTS 30 diabetic patients were recruited with a mean age of 54.3 ± 7.2 years. 24 (80%) were females. Obesity was diagnosed in 27 cases (90%). The median diabetes duration was 10 years. The study showed a statistically significant decrease in post-fasting body weight (BW), Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) & hip circumference (HC). There was a statistically significant decrease of post-fasting low density lipoprotein (LDL-C), Total cholesterol (TC), and leptin. The study also showed a statistically significant increase of post-fasting high density lipoprotein (HDL-C) and βHB. No significant change was found in post-fasting levels of HbA1c, FPG, triglycerides (TG) or high sensitive CRP. Post-fasting leptin was positively correlated with post-fasting BW, BMI, WC, and HC. Post-fasting βHB was positively correlated with post-fasting TG, HbA1c, and LDL-C. Leptin levels change (pre vs post fasting) was positively correlated with the change in LDL-C levels. CONCLUSION IF reduced leptin and increased β-hydroxybutyrate levels. IF is an effective tool for losing weight and visceral fat and improving lipid profile in obese and overweight patients with T2D.

Abstract
The biological clocks of the circadian timing system coordinate cellular and physiological processes and synchronize them with daily cycles. While the central clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is mainly synchronized by the light/dark cycles, the peripheral clocks react to other stimuli, including the feeding/fasting state, nutrients, sleep-wake cycles, and physical activity. During the disruption of circadian rhythms due to genetic mutations or social and occupational obligations, incorrect arrangement between the internal clock system and environmental rhythms leads to the development of obesity. Desynchronization between the central and peripheral clocks by altered timing of food intake and diet composition leads to uncoupling of the peripheral clocks from the central pacemaker and to the development of metabolic disorders. The strong coupling of the SCN to the light-dark cycle creates a situation of misalignment when food is ingested during the "wrong" time of day. Food-anticipatory activity is mediated by a self-sustained circadian timing, and its principal component is a food-entrainable oscillator. Modifying the time of feeding alone greatly affects body weight, whereas ketogenic diet (KD) influences circadian biology, through the modulation of clock gene expression. Night-eating behavior is one of the causes of circadian disruption, and night eaters have compulsive and uncontrolled eating with severe obesity. By contrast, time-restricted eating (TRE) restores circadian rhythms through maintaining an appropriate daily rhythm of the eating-fasting cycle. The hypothalamus has a crucial role in the regulation of energy balance rather than food intake. While circadian locomotor output cycles kaput (CLOCK) expression levels increase with high-fat diet-induced obesity, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPARα) increases the transcriptional level of brain and muscle aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator (ARNT)-like 1 (BMAL1) in obese subjects. In this context, effective timing of chronotherapies aiming to correct SCN-driven rhythms depends on an accurate assessment of the SCN phase. In fact, in a multi-oscillator system, local rhythmicity and its disruption reflects the disruption of either local clocks or central clocks, thus imposing rhythmicity on those local tissues, whereas misalignment of peripheral oscillators is due to exosome-based intercellular communication.Consequently, disruption of clock genes results in dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and obesity, while light exposure during the daytime, food intake during the daytime, and sleeping during the biological night promote circadian alignment between the central and peripheral clocks. Thus, shift work is associated with an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases because of unusual eating times as well as unusual light exposure and disruption of the circadian rhythm.

Abstract
Different dietary interventions, especially intermittent fasting, are widely used and promoted by physicians; these regimens have been studied lately for their impact on the gut microbiota composition/function and, consequently, on the general physiopathological processes of the host. Studies are showing that dietary components modulate the microbiota, and, at the same time, the host metabolism is deeply influenced by the different products resulting from nutrient transformation in the microbiota compartment. This reciprocal relationship can potentially influence even drug metabolism for chronic drug regimens, significantly impacting human health/disease. Recently, the influence of various dietary restrictions on the gut microbiota and the differences between the effects were investigated. In this review, we explored the current knowledge of different dietary restrictions on animal and human gut microbiota and the impact of these changes on human health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Obesity is a multifactorial condition associated with metabolic alterations that can be aggravated during female aging. Calorie restriction via intermittent fasting (IF) diets may reduce body weight and therefore have the potential to decrease obesity and associated comorbidities, such as insulin resistance. This study investigated the effects of two IF protocols, alternate-day fasting (ADF) and time-restricted feeding (TRF) in middle-aged obese female rats. METHODS Wistar rats (age 15 mo) were fed with standard chow or high-fat diet for 8 wk and then separated into the following groups (n = 5-8 each) for another 8 wk: control (received standard chow), obese (received high-fat diet), obese + ADF (24-h fasting protocol), and obese + TRF (14 h daily). RESULTS At the end of the study, both IF protocols were able to reduce body weight and body mass index compared with the obese group. However, no changes were observed in adiposity and glucose homeostasis. We also found an increase in total leukocytes, lymphocytes, and monocytes in the TRF group and a higher number of platelets in the ADF group. Blood lipid profiles, including triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein, as well as liver stress responses, such as heat shock protein 70 and malondialdehyde, were not changed by IF. CONCLUSIONS Although ADF and TRF protocols resulted in a reduction of body weight and body mass index, these dietary interventions did not promote health benefits, such as reducing blood lipid profile, adiposity, and insulin resistance. In addition, ADF and TRF increased inflammatory biomarkers, which may increase the risk of obesity-associated comorbidities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutrition is an important risk factor for both Multiple sclerosis (MS) development and post-diagnosis disease prognosis. However, it is important to evaluate the diet as a whole instead of considering the effects of nutrients individually. AIMS In this systematic review, it was aimed to evaluate the effect of different dietary interventions in MS patients and to determine the most appropriate dietary model for this group. METHODS The search was carried out between February 2022 and March 2022 in three different databases, 'PubMed', 'Web of Science' and 'The Cochrane Library' over the university access network. After the search for the determined keywords, a total of 269 studies conducted between 2018 and 2022 were identified, but only 17 of them were found to be suitable for inclusion criteria. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Although there are studies reporting positive health outcomes for energy-restricted/intermittent fasting diets, ketogenic diet, and modified paleolithic diet, these diets may not be applicable diets in the long-term as they may cause deficiencies of various nutrients. No current study was found for low-fat diets, gluten-free diet and Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet applied to individuals with MS. The Mediterranean diet, on the other hand, is more recommendable than other diet models due to the positive health results reported in long-term studies and the absence of any side effects. However, more studies are needed to reach a definite conclusion.

Abstract
Skipping breakfast is one of the most prevalent irregular eating habits. Several pieces of evidence have reported the association between breakfast omission and a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases. Numerous publications have focused on the impact of skipping breakfast on various cardiovascular risk factors. Therefore, the current systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess this impact, especially with regard to anthropometric measurements, serum lipid profiles, blood pressure, and glycemic control indicators. A comprehensive search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials up to 1 April 2023. A total of 11 eligible trials were identified to evaluate the combined effects of skipping breakfast. Final integrated results demonstrated that breakfast omission significantly decreased the body weight (mean difference = -0.66, 95% CI: -1.09 to -0.24, p = 0.002, I2 = 0.0) and increased the level of serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (mean difference = 9.89, 95% CI: 5.14 to 14.63, p = 0.000, I2 = 17.3). Subgroup analysis also revealed potential factors that may affect the outcomes, for example, the physiological condition of participants, duration, gender, and type of breakfast. In conclusion, skipping breakfast may reduce body weight while increasing the level of serum LDL-C at the same time. In view of the limited trials, further studies are needed to expound the role of breakfast omission in cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
As the global population ages, the prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases is surging. These disorders have a multifaceted pathogenesis, entwined with genetic and environmental factors. Emerging research underscores the profound influence of diet on the development and progression of health conditions. Intermittent fasting (IF), a dietary pattern that is increasingly embraced and recommended, has demonstrated potential in improving neurophysiological functions and mitigating pathological injuries with few adverse effects. Although the precise mechanisms of IF's beneficial impact are not yet completely understood, gut microbiota and their metabolites are believed to be pivotal in mediating these effects. This review endeavors to thoroughly examine current studies on the shifts in gut microbiota and metabolite profiles prompted by IF, and their possible consequences for neural health. It also highlights the significance of dietary strategies as a clinical consideration for those with neurological conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Eating frequency may affect body weight and cardiometabolic health. Intervention trials and observational studies have both indicated that high- and low-frequency eating can be associated with better health outcomes. There are currently no guidelines to inform how to advise healthy adults about how frequently to consume food or beverages. AIM To establish whether restricted- (≤ three meals per day) frequency had a superior effect on markers of cardiometabolic health (primary outcome: weight change) compared to unrestricted-eating (≥ four meals per day) frequency in adults. METHODS We searched Medline (Ovid), Embase, CINAHL (EBSCO), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), CAB Direct and Web of Science Core Collection electronic databases from inception to 7 June 2022 for clinical trials (randomised parallel or cross-over trials) reporting on the effect of high or low-frequency eating on cardiometabolic health (primary outcome: weight change). Trial interventions had to last for at least two weeks, and had to have been conducted in human adults. Bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool 2.0. Standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated for all outcomes. Certainty of the evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. RESULTS Seventeen reports covering 16 trials were included in the systematic review. Data from five trials were excluded from meta-analysis due to insufficient reporting. 15 of 16 trials were at high risk of bias. There was very low certainty evidence of no difference between high- and low-frequency eating for weight-change (MD: -0.62 kg, CI95: -2.76 to 1.52 kg, p = 0.57). CONCLUSIONS There was no discernible advantage to eating in a high- or low-frequency dietary pattern for cardiometabolic health. We cannot advocate for either restricted- or unrestricted eating frequency to change markers of cardiometabolic health in healthy young to middle-aged adults. PROTOCOL REGISTRATION CRD42019137938.

Abstract
The quality of American diets, measured by the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), has remained stable and low since 2005. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025 call for research analyzing dietary patterns to determine how guidelines might be altered to increase healthy eating. The present paper seeks to determine the dietary quality of popular fad dietary patterns among Americans. A definition of "fad diet" was created, and Google Trends© was searched for popular diets to determine popular dietary patterns based on the fad diet definition. Finally, eight dietary patterns were identified for inclusion. One-week sample menus were created for each dietary pattern, maximizing alignment with the DGAs but staying within the dietary pattern parameters, and then scored according to the HEI 2015 to determine the dietary quality. Total HEI scores ranged from 26.7 (Carnivore) to 89.1 (Low-FODMAP); the six highest total HEI scores were in the range of 77.1-89.1 out of 100 points. This analytical approach showed that some of the included popular fad dietary patterns have the potential to attain a high dietary quality. Rather than suggesting one "best" diet or dietary pattern, there is opportunity to maximize dietary quality in the context of dietary patterns that are considered fad diets.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ramadan is a model of intermittent fasting linked with possible beneficial effects. Scarce information, however, is available about the combined effects of Ramadan intermittent fasting (RIF) on anthropometric and metabolic indices, gastrointestinal symptoms, and motility. METHODS In 21 healthy Muslims, we assessed the impact of RIF on caloric intake, physical activity, gastrointestinal symptoms and motility (gastric/gallbladder emptying by ultrasonography, orocaecal transit time by lactulose breath test), anthropometric indices, subcutaneous and visceral fat thickness (ultrasonography), glucose and lipid homeostasis. RESULTS Mean caloric intake decreased from a median of 2069 kcal (range 1677-2641) before Ramadan to 1798 kcal (1289-3126) during Ramadan and increased again to 2000 kcal (1309-3485) after Ramadan. Although physical activity remained stable before, during, and after RIF, body weight, body mass index and waist circumference decreased in all subjects and in both genders, together with a significant decrease in subcutaneous and visceral fat thickness and insulin resistance. The postprandial gastric emptying speed was significantly faster after than before RIF. Fasting gallbladder volume was about 6% smaller after, than before Ramadan, with a stronger and faster postprandial gallbladder contraction. After RIF, lactulose breath test documented increased microbiota carbohydrate fermentation (postprandial H2 peak), and faster orocaecal transit time. RIF also significantly improved gastric fullness, epigastric pain and heartburn. CONCLUSIONS RIF generates, in healthy subjects, multiple systemic beneficial effects in terms of fat burden, metabolic profile, gastrointestinal motility and symptoms. Further comprehensive studies should assess the potential beneficial effects of RIF in diseased people.

Abstract
Background: nutritional factors might affect the number and function of immune cells for instance the production of cytokines and immunoglobulins. Ramadan fasting is intermittent abstinence from eating and drinking for almost four weeks. Aim: The present study aimed to investigate the influence of intermittent fasting on serum IgA, salivary IgA (sIgA), interleukin (IL)-17, and IL-22 levels. Methods: 40 healthy men aged 19-29 years were evaluated before and during the fourth week of Ramadan fasting for IgA levels by the nephelometric method as well as salivary IgA (sIgA), IL-17, and IL-22 amounts using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: serum IgA levels reduced significantly at the end of Ramadan fasting (225.8 ± 87 vs. 196 ± 70 mg/dl) (p-value<0.001); however, sIgA amounts did not differ between before and the last week of Ramadan. Serum IL-17 reduced significantly (2.93 ± 1.51 vs. 2.17 ± 1.33 pg/ml) (p-value = 0.006) whereas IL-22 levels remained approximately unchanged. Summary: four weeks of intermittent fasting during Ramadan reduced the serum levels of IgA and IL-17 but did not affect the production of sIgA and IL-22. These findings indicate a limited impact of intermittent fasting on mucosal immunity.

Abstract
Intermittent Fasting (IF) is the consumption of food and drinks within a defined time, while the ketogenic diet (KD) switches the metabolism from glucose to fats. Continuation of intermittent fasting leads to the generation of ketones, the exact mechanism for a ketogenic diet. This article discusses the types of IF and KD, the monitoring required, and the mechanisms underlying IF and KD, followed by disorders in which the combination strategy could be applied. The strategies for successfully applying combination therapy are included, along with recommendations for the primary care physicians (PCP) which could serve as a handy guide for patient management. This opinion article could serve as the baseline for future clinical studies since there is an utmost need for developing new wholesome strategies for managing chronic disorders.

Abstract
The metabolic benefits of intermittent fasting (IF) have been well recognized. However, limited studies have examined the relationship between long-term maternal IF before pregnancy and offspring health. In this study, a C57BL/6J mouse model of long-term IF before pregnancy was established: 4-week-old female mice were subjected to alternate-day fasting for 12 weeks and resumed normal diet after mating. Female mice in the control group were fed ad libitum. Offspring mice were weaned at 6 weeks of age and fed a normal chow diet or a 60% high-fat diet. The effects of long-term pre-pregnancy IF on offspring metabolism and its underlying mechanism were examined. We found that neonatal IF offspring weighted significantly less relevant to control mice. This difference gradually disappeared as a result of catch-up growth. In the IF offspring, adipose tissue mass was significantly increased. This alteration was associated with a considerable deterioration in glucose tolerance. No significant difference in food intake was observed. Further, lipid deposition as well as triglyceride contents in the liver were greatly increased. Maternal IF significantly decreased levels of DNA methyltransferase in the liver of offspring. DNA methylation modifications of molecules associated with the mTORC1 signaling pathway were significantly altered, leading to the significant inhibition of mTORC1 signaling. Overexpression of S6K1 activated hepatic mTORC1 signaling and reversed the metabolic dysfunction in IF offspring. In conclusion, long-term pre-pregnancy IF increases hepatic steatosis and adiposity, as well as impairs glucose metabolism in adult offspring. This occurs through DNA methylation-dependent suppression of hepatic mTORC1 signaling activity.

Abstract
Obesity and its association with metabolic syndrome are implicated in many disease states. Research has focused on the role of diet and lifestyle modifications in the evolution of prediabetes to diabetes seeking ways to intervene and improve outcomes. Proven nutritional include leaner proteins, an abundance of vegetables, extra-virgin olive oil, and controlled portioning of carbs and starches. The transition from a sedentary state to an exercise routine of moderate intensity has shown efficacy in lowering metabolic risks. The synergy of dietary and physical activity modifications are the building blocks for lifestyle modifications examined in this review as a means of preventing obesity-related diabetes.

Abstract
Overnutrition is a risk factor for various human diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic disorders, and cancers. Therefore, targeting overnutrition represents a simple but attractive strategy for the treatment of these increasing public health threats. Fasting as a dietary intervention for combating overnutrition has been extensively studied. Fasting has been practiced for millennia, but only recently have its roles in the molecular clock, gut microbiome, and tissue homeostasis and function emerged. Fasting can slow aging in most species and protect against various human diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic disorders, and cancers. These centuried and unfading adventures and explorations suggest that fasting has the potential to delay aging and help prevent and treat diseases while minimizing side effects caused by chronic dietary interventions. In this review, recent animal and human studies concerning the role and underlying mechanism of fasting in physiology and pathology are summarized, the therapeutic potential of fasting is highlighted, and the combination of pharmacological intervention and fasting is discussed as a new treatment regimen for human diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of 8 wk of time-restricted eating (TRE) along with a caloric restriction on metabolic profile, metabolic rate, symptoms of mood, and eating disorders and weight loss in women with overweight or obesity. METHODS Women age 18 to 59 y with a body mass index of ≥25 kg/m2 were enrolled in this parallel-arm, randomized, clinical trial. Participants were randomly allocated into two groups (8-h TRE or non-TRE group) using a 2:1 allocation strategy. Both groups received a diet plan with caloric restriction. Body weight, resting metabolic rate, metabolic profile, and symptoms of mood and eating disorders were evaluated at baseline and on follow up. RESULTS Thirty-six subjects were included in this study, with 24 in the TRE group and 12 in the non-TRE group. Subject in the TRE group showed more pronounced loss of weight, body fat mass, and fat-free mass than those in the non-TRE group. These losses were not associated with changes in resting metabolic rate, metabolic profile, and eating or mood disorder symptoms. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that 8 wk of TRE does not influence behavioral parameters in individuals with overweight or obesity, but could lead to weight loss.

Abstract
Timing of nutrient intake for athletes may affect exercise performance and cardiometabolic factors. Our objective was to examine the effect of time-restricted eating (TRE) on cardiometabolic health. Using a cross-over study design, 15 endurance-trained male runners were randomized to either a normal dietary pattern (ND) first (12 h eating/fasting times) followed by time-restricted eating (TRE) pattern (16 h fast; 8 h eating) or the reverse, with a 4-week washout period between interventions. Body composition, resting energy expenditure, blood pressure and serum insulin, glucose and lipids were measured using standard laboratory methods. Exercise training and dietary intake (calories and macronutrients) were similar across interventions. No significant differences were observed in resting energy expenditure, markers of insulin resistance, serum lipids or blood pressure. Body composition did change significantly (p < 0.05) with whole body fat mass (-0.8 ± 1.3 kg with TRE vs. +0.1 ± 4.3 kg with ND), leg fat mass (-0.3 ± 0.5 kg with TRE vs. +0.1 ± 0.4 kg with ND), and percent body fat (-1.0 ± 1.5% with TRE vs. +0.1 ± 1.3% with ND) declining more in the TRE intervention, with no change in fat-free mass. This study is one of a few to investigate the effects of an isocaloric 16/8 TRE eating pattern in trained endurance athletes and confirms no change in cardiometabolic risk factors. In conclusion, TRE is not detrimental to cardiometabolic health in endurance-trained male runners but could be beneficial on exercise performance by reducing fat mass.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity remains a public health concern, and intermittent fasting (IF) is a popular strategy for weight loss that has gained considerable scientific and popular attention. However, weight control can affect body image. Poor body image and its impact on psychological well-being are linked to obesity in many individuals. Body appreciation is a crucial characteristic of positive body image. However, there is a lack of studies assessing these relationships in Saudi adults. AIM To evaluate the associations between IF diet, body image satisfaction, and body appreciation in Saudi adults. METHOD A web-based cross-sectional study was done with healthy Saudi adults aged 18 to 50 years old who followed the IF diet. The questionnaire had five sections: a brief study introduction, sociodemographic variables, adherence to the diet, modified body image scale, and body appreciation scale. Ethical approval was obtained. RESULTS A total of 190 participants were included in this study, including 59 (31.1%) males and 131 (68.9%) females. Comparing before and after IF, the body mass index (BMI) significantly decreased after IF (p < 0.001). After IF, a significant decrease in the body image dissatisfaction score was observed (p < 0.001). A significant increase was noted in the body appreciation score (p < 0.001). Conclusion: IF is significantly associated with better body image satisfaction and body appreciation. These results may help weight loss studies and may have public health implications.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide and the consumption of a high-calorie diet is one of its risk factors. Calorie restriction (CR) slows tumor growth in a variety of cancers, including colorectal cancer; however, the mechanism behind this remains unknown. In the present study, CR effectively reduced the tumor volume and weight in a xenograft BALB/c male nude mouse model. In addition, tumor immunohistochemistry revealed that the CR group had significantly higher expression of Bax (P<0.001) and significantly lower levels of Bcl2 (P<0.0001) and Ki67 (P<0.001) compared with control group. Furthermore, data from 16S ribosomal (r)RNA sequencing implied that CR was able to reprogram the microbiota structure, characterized by increased Lactobacillus constituent ratio (P<0.05), with amelioration of microbial dysbiosis caused by CRC. Further receiver operating characteristic curves demonstrated that the bacteria Bacteroides [area under the curve (AUC)=0.800], Lactobacillus (AUC=0.760) and Roseburia (AUC=0.720) served key roles in suppression of CRC in the mouse model. The functional prediction of intestinal flora indicated 'cyanoamino acid metabolism' (P<0.01), 'replication initiation protein REP (rolling circle plasmid replication)' (P<0.01), 'tRNA G10 N-methylase Trm11' (P<0.01) and 'uncharacterized protein with cyclophilin fold, contains DUF369 domain' (P<0.05) were downregulated in CR group. These findings implied that CR suppressed CRC in mice and altered the gut microbiota.

Abstract
Intermittent fasting has grown in popularity over the past several years. However, intermittent fasting has also been shown to relate to eating disorder behaviors and psychopathology, yet little research has explored this relationship in epidemiological samples. Therefore, the aims of this study were to determine prevalence and characteristics of engagement in intermittent fasting, and associations with eating disorder behaviors and psychopathology. Data from the Canadian Study of Adolescent Health Behaviors, a national study of Canadian adolescents and young adults (N = 2762) were analyzed. Multiple modified Poisson regression analyses were conducted to determine the association between intermittent fasting (past 12 months and 30 days) and eating disorder behaviors and psychopathology (measured using the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire). Overall, 47.7 % of women, 38.4 % of men, and 52.0 % of transgender/gender non-conforming (TGNC) participants reported engaging in intermittent fasting in the past 12 months. Intermittent fasting in the past 12 months and 30 days was significantly associated with eating disorder psychopathology among women, men, and TGNC participants. Varying patterns of association between intermittent fasting and eating disorder behaviors were found across genders, with the most consistent relationships between intermittent fasting and ED behaviors in women. Findings underscore the common nature of intermittent fasting among a large, community sample of adolescents and young adults across Canada, as well as associated eating disorder behaviors and psychopathology. Continued research is needed to further understand the effects of intermittent fasting, as clinical and public health efforts are needed to protect the health of adolescent and young adults.

Abstract
The increasing number of overweight and obese people makes the search for new effective ways to reduce body weight extremely urgent. Recently, intermittent fasting has received a lot of attention, as a dietary protocol, presumably effective in reducing body weight. Despite the large number of studies, the effects of intermittent fasting on the human body are controversial, since studies differ in dietary options, design, and often have a small sample size. In this review of the literature, the authors cite the results of studies of the effectiveness of intermittent fasting in patients with obesity, diabetes mellitus, and high risks of developing cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Background: Intermittent fasting (IF) is defined as an eating pattern without calorie restrictions, alternating between periods of fasting and eating. In the past decades IF has not only become a popular weight-reducing diet but is thought to improve Quality of Life (QoL) and fatigue. However, very little evidence exists for the general population. Thus, we aimed to assess the impact of a 16-h fasting period per day over a three-month study period on QoL and especially fatigue in healthy people. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study including healthy subjects. All participants fasted 16 h for at least five days a week while maintaining their normal lifestyle. In the study, we analysed blood samples as well as QoL through standardized questionnaires (WHO-5 questionnaire, Short Form Health 36). Furthermore, we measured the degree of fatigue with the Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS) and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) as well as compliance, activity records, and weight alterations. All endpoints were evaluated at baseline, after two weeks, four weeks, and three months of IF. Results: A total of 30 participants fasted for the entire study period. The results of the WHO-5 questionnaire (15.6 ± 4.6 vs. 18 ± 3.6, p < 0.0019) demonstrated a significant increase in QoL. For long-term QoL six out of eight domains measured by the Short Form Health 36 (SF-36) significantly improved (e.g., physical health: 92.3 ± 11.6 vs. 96.5 ± 6.3, p = 0.015; mental health: 75.5 ± 12.0 vs. 81.7 ± 9.0; p < 0.001 and body pain: 74.1 ± 31.8 vs. 89.5 ± 14.9; p = 0.008) after three months. Fatigue significantly decreased from 10.3 ± 3.2 to 8.4 ± 2.5; p = 0.002 for mental fatigue and from 12.6 ± 3.8 to 10.7 ± 3.3; p = 0.002 measured by the FAS. The mean FSS-Score at baseline was 3.5 ± 1.2 compared to 2.9 ± 1.1 (scale 1−7) after three months (p < 0.001). Notably, the proliferation marker IGF-1 was significantly reduced. No clinically significant changes in laboratory parameters were observed that would have endangered a participant’s safety. Conclusions: IF according to the 16:8 regime over a fasting period of three months significantly improved several aspects of the QoL and decreased fatigue in healthy people, while maintaining a good safety profile. The practicability of this diet was also demonstrated for shift workers and people with a high percentage of active labour. Apart from the improvement in QoL and fatigue, the significant reduction in IGF-1, which can act as an accelerator of tumour development and progression, might be an indicator of the potential benefits of IF for patients with cancer.

Abstract
Dietary risk factors play a fundamental role in the prevention and progression of atherosclerosis and PAD (Peripheral Arterial Disease). The impact of nutrition, however, defined as the process of taking in food and using it for growth, metabolism and repair, remains undefined with regard to PAD. This article describes the interplay between nutrition and the development/progression of PAD. We reviewed 688 articles, including key articles, narrative and systematic reviews, meta-analyses and clinical studies. We analyzed the interaction between nutrition and PAD predictors, and subsequently created four descriptive tables to summarize the relationship between PAD, dietary risk factors and outcomes. We comprehensively reviewed the role of well-studied diets (Mediterranean, vegetarian/vegan, low-carbohydrate ketogenic and intermittent fasting diet) and prevalent eating behaviors (emotional and binge eating, night eating and sleeping disorders, anorexia, bulimia, skipping meals, home cooking and fast/ultra-processed food consumption) on the traditional risk factors of PAD. Moreover, we analyzed the interplay between PAD and nutritional status, nutrients, dietary patterns and eating habits. Dietary patterns and eating disorders affect the development and progression of PAD, as well as its disabling complications including major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and major adverse limb events (MALE). Nutrition and dietary risk factor modification are important targets to reduce the risk of PAD as well as the subsequent development of MACE and MALE.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a highly prevalent disease in the modern society. It can be defined as a group of metabolic diseases marked by chronic hyperglycemia arising from defects in insulin secretion or resistance to insulin action, or both. Its predecessor, prediabetes, is also an important entity, and its management is essential to prevent its progression to DM. Together, these entities burden global health and the world economy, and therefore, prevention and management are key to improving global health and reducing the financial burden on the world economy. Comprehensive lifestyle modification has been proven to be a safe and effective method for preventing the progression of prediabetes and treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Lifestyle modifications such as weight loss, exercise, and diets such as low-carbohydrate one, Mediterranean, and very low calorie diets are traditionally recommended. These particular diets aim to attain calorie deficits and thus induce weight loss. Intermittent fasting (IF) is one such diet that focuses more on the timing of calorie consumption. However, there are several methods of achieving this, which are highlighted in this review. IF has been shown to promote weight loss, reduce insulin resistance, improve glycemic control and lower the risk of cardiometabolic diseases. However, little literature is available regarding the use of IF in managing DM. This review intends to elucidate the role of intermittent fasting in preventing and treating DM, including its benefits and limitations. From the various studies reviewed in this article, it can be deduced that intermittent fasting can achieve suitable glycemic targets and weight control.
