Abstract
OBJECTIVES This scoping review explores advancements in integrating laser technologies into regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) and evaluates their potential benefits compared to conventional approaches. DATA AND SOURCES The review encompassed searches in electronic databases - Embase, Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (September 27th, 2024) - and grey literature from Google Scholar and ProQuest. STUDY SELECTION Out of 480 identified references, 14 studies met the inclusion criteria. Laser applications were categorized into photobiomodulation (PBM), photodynamic therapy (PDT), and other laser-assisted techniques, such as Er:YAG laser-assisted irrigation and diode laser dentin etching. PBM showed enhanced tissue regeneration through improved angiogenesis, cell proliferation, and the release of growth factors such as TGF-β1. PDT provided antimicrobial effects without compromising cell viability. Er:YAG laser-assisted irrigation demonstrated increased growth factor release but posed risks of irrigant extrusion. Additionally, diode laser dentin etching enhanced stem cell attachment, offering improvements to REPs. CONCLUSIONS With an expanding evidence base, laser technologies hold promise for becoming integral to REPs, enabling minimally invasive and effective treatments for necrotic and traumatized immature teeth. Nonetheless, the limited number of studies highlights the need for further research. Standardized clinical trials are crucial to establish long-term outcomes and address safety concerns. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE REPs offer a promising approach for treating immature necrotic teeth, and the use of lasers in endodontics has demonstrated advantages over traditional methods. This scoping review aimed to explore significant findings regarding the use of laser-assisted therapies in REPs.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of photobiomodulation therapy on the regenerative potential of non-vital mature permanent teeth of healthy Canine dogs. METHODS 54 mature roots, obtained from 27 premolars, in dogs, were selected and divided into three equal groups where Group I received regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) using blood clot as a scaffold (positive control), Group II received similar treatment as Group I, followed by photobiomodulation therapy (study group) and Group III did not receive any intervention (negative control). Each group was further divided into three equal subgroups for the evaluation of the vascular area percentage and fibroblast count at 3 different intervals; 3, 10, and 15 weeks. Statistical analysis was performed with R statistical analysis software version 4.1.3 RESULTS: Data analysis for vascular area percentages, revealed an insignificant increase in mean values at 3 and 10 weeks for both the positive control and study group, and all values were significantly lower than the negative control (p < 0.001). At 15 weeks, there was an insignificant difference between the study group and the negative control group, with mean values was 9.76 ± 2.25, and 11.97 ± 2.37, respectively. However, both values were significantly higher than the positive control group (2.47 ± 1.0), (p < 0.001). Regarding fibroblast count, there was a gradual increase in mean values recorded at different intervals, reaching its maximum at the 15th week period; they were 41.40 ± 1.14, 56.60 ± 6.11 and 44.67 ± 17.04 for positive control, study group, and negative control respectively, with insignificant differences between the study group and negative control. CONCLUSION The results of this study support the revascularization of non-vital mature permanent teeth as an alternative treatment modality. Photobiomodulation could improve the construction of regenerated blood vessels and fibroblasts. However, further studies with longer flow-up periods and different animal models are recommended.

Abstract
Background: The evaluation of the effect of laser in disinfection of root canal in pulp regenerative therapy, if found effective laser can be used for root canal disinfection in cases of regenerative endodontic therapy. Objective: This study includes a systematic review addressing the question of whether laser is effective in root canal treatment in regenerative endodontic therapy. Methods: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), case series, and animal studies evaluating the effect of laser-assisted endodontic irrigation in pulp regenerative therapy were included. Review articles, case reports, and in vitro studies were excluded. The data search covers all publications without limitation by year. The last search was conducted on December 31, 2023. An electronic search was performed using the following databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. The result of this review was in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines. Assessment of risk of bias was done using the modified Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool. Results: The initial search resulted in 749 articles. Eleven duplicate articles were removed. Following the titles and abstracts screening, 11 articles were identified to form the basis of this systematic review. Three articles were excluded as full text was unavailable. Overall, eight studies evaluated the laser effect in root canal disinfection in pulp regenerative therapy, which were included in this systematic review. Of the included studies, a low risk of bias was shown by 7/8 studies, and a moderate risk of bias was shown by 1/8 studies. Conclusion: Laser can be used for root canal disinfection in cases of regenerative endodontic therapy. There is a need for further RCTs about individual laser groups and their disinfection effect on regenerative endodontic therapy for obtaining a higher level of evidence.

Abstract
Performing endodontic treatment on a tooth with an immature apex can be challenging due to the risk of irrigant extrusion beyond the apex. This narrative review investigates the over-apex extrusion of activated irrigants in teeth with open and immature apices and aims to provide crucial insights for practice and research. Two hundred fifty-two results were found from the electronic search. Sixteen duplicates were removed before selection, and 24 were excluded. Of the 212 remaining results, the full text was evaluated for eligibility. One hundred ninety-four results were excluded: in one hundred sixty-five, irrigant activation was not performed; twenty-nine were animal studies; in seven, irrigant activation was not performed to disinfect the canal. Finally, 13 studies were included. They cover a range of topics, from the types of irrigants used to the techniques of activation, and their findings contribute to our understanding of the risks and consequences of irrigant extrusion. All the activation techniques investigated can, to varying degrees, cause the irrigant to extrude beyond the apex. Extrusion may not always be clinically relevant; however, the consequences of excessive irrigant leakage from the apex are dangerous, so try to assess all the variables that may cause it and adopt techniques to reduce it.

Abstract
Statement of the Problem Treatment of immature necrotic teeth is a problematic situation. Conventional root canal therapy is challenging and leaves a weak, fragile, and undeveloped tooth for lifetime. Purpose This review was aimed to assess the outcome of available randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on the efficacy of platelet concentrates (PC) in dentine-pulp complex regeneration. Materials and Method In this systematic review, an electronic search was conducted on MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane, and Google scholar databases. A further manual search was performed on the list of related articles in order to ensure inclusion of potentially missed articles in earlier electronic search. Those proved RCTs matched with the standard criteria were included following an initial assessment of abstracts and the text independently by the reviewers. Results From the total 602 harvested articles, only 13 met the criteria and were evaluated with 11 having parallel design and 2 split mouth. Only one study featured low risk of bias, while three had moderate risk and the rest were at high risk of bias. Six studies had used platelet rich plasma (PRP), 4 employed platelet rich fibrin (PRF), one utilized injectable platelet rich fibrin (I-PRF), and three used both PRF and PRP for their experimental groups while blood clot (BC) was used as the control group for all. The success rate was reported at 87.3% judged by the absence of pathologic signs and symptoms. Conclusion Dentin wall thickening, root lengthening and apex closure were higher in PC groups, however, these differences were not statistically significant in reported studies. It can be concluded that PCs promote the pulp tissue revitalization and continuation of root development. However, a consensus on its potency for true pulp regeneration is yet to be reached.

Abstract
Background and Objectives The present systematic review aims to assess the success rate of the pulp regeneration treatment, according to the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) criteria, using different bioactive materials in permanent teeth of pediatric subjects (6-17 years of age). Materials and Methods The study protocol was registered on PROSPERO and adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses statement. The question formulation was accomplished using the PICO model, and an electronic search was carried out on Scopus, MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases till April 1, 2023. A total of 30 studies were established to fulfill the inclusion criteria of this systematic review. Results A total of 273 teeth have been treated with pulp regeneration treatment. By comparing different biomaterials and the success criteria defined by the AAE, the material associated with a higher success rate was found to be the white mineral trioxide aggregate. However, the overall success rate of pulp regeneration treatment was reported for 248 out of 273 teeth (91.20%). Conclusions Data obtained support the potential that regenerative endodontics aids in continuing root development in permanent immature teeth. Further studies are needed for a more extensive evaluation of the use of different biomaterials and the success rate in regenerative endodontics.

Abstract
Introduction: Developing regenerative endodontic treatment (RET) is an exciting approach to managing immature permanent teeth with pulp necrosis. RET is usually performed in two clinical steps: disinfection (first step) and tissue engineering (second step). Recently, laser therapy has entered the field of RET. This study aimed to provide an overview of the literature that employed laser therapy for root regeneration. Methods: A comprehensive search was performed on four databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The searched keywords were laser, regenerative endodontics, immature permanent teeth, and dental pulp necrosis, and related English-published articles were included up to October 2023. Results: Thirteen studies utilized a laser for RET. In the first step of RET, both high-power and low-level lasers (through photodynamic therapy [PDT]) may be applied for canal disinfection. In contrast, regenerative procedures in the second step of RET are just accelerated by low-power lasers (biostimulation). The literature does not support the benefit of laser-assisted irrigation in improving the clinical success of RET. There is some evidence that laser-assisted disinfection with a diode laser may provide comparable results to triple antibiotic paste in reducing bacterial counts in root canals while providing slightly better clinical and radiographic outcomes. PDT may be an effective and suitable adjunct to conventional disinfection methods in immature, necrotic teeth. Conclusion: Low-power lasers may be beneficial tools for improving the results of regenerative endodontics through chemical disinfection in the first step (PDT) or by biostimulation in the second step of RET.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an adjunctive treatment that aims to inactivate microorganisms through an oxidative reaction produced by irradiating a photosensitizing agent. The quest for improved root canal disinfection has sought supplementary methods when performing chemomechanical procedures. From this perspective, PDT protocols were proposed as an auxiliary approach in endodontics. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate publication metrics and research trends related to this scope. METHODS This review is reported in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 recommendations. Two blinded and independent reviewers systematically searched five electronic databases until December 2021. The acquired bibliometric parameters were analyzed through descriptive statistics and graphical mappings with VOSViewer software. RESULTS The search retrieved 342 studies from 84 journals originating from 33 countries. About 85% of the included studies were published over the last decade. Most of the available evidence is laboratory-based (74.5%), and the main clinical outcomes evaluated were microbiological load reduction and postoperative pain. Mayram Pourhajibagher is the researcher with the most publications as the first author (n = 16). Tehran University of Medical Sciences carried out the highest number of studies (n = 29), and Photodiagnosis and Photodynamic Therapy is the journal that most published on the theme (n = 111). CONCLUSIONS This bibliometric analysis mapped and discussed the scientific progress and publication metrics in PDT in endodontic research. Additionally, future perspectives were highlighted and should focus on discovering new photosensitizer agents, standardizing optimal photoactivation protocols, and conducting more clinical-oriented research.

Abstract
Regenerative endodontics has introduced numerous procedures such as pulp implantation, revascularization, and postnatal stem cell therapy. Revascularization has been successfully implemented clinically nowadays, thus providing dentists with outrageous results. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) used either alone or along with bone graft promotes bone growth and vascularization. This matrix promotes migration, cell attachment, and proliferation of osteoblast that leads to bone formation. PRF consists of a packed fibrin complex consisting of leukocytes, cytokines, and glycoproteins such as thrombospondin. The usage of PRF has reported high success rates in surgical cases such as sinus lift procedures, healing of extraction sockets, and management of periapical abscesses. Compared to platelet-rich plasma, PRF is more economical, easy to prepare, and feasible to use in daily clinical practices. Revascularization compromised the induction of a blood clot into the root canal space, which emerged as a clinical triumph. This further led to platelet concentrates as an autologous scaffold on which revascularization could occur. The applications of PRF in regenerative endodontics are numerous, such as an agent for repairing iatrogenic perforation of the pulpal floor and for the revascularization of immature permanent teeth with necrotic pulps. It acts as a matrix for tissue ingrowth. Evidence of progressive thickening of dentinal walls, root lengthening, regression in the periapical lesion, and apical closure was reported. Further studies are needed to clarify the precise mechanism of action of PRF for dental pulp regeneration both in vitro and in vivo. The current review aims at the present uses of PRF in regenerative endodontics dentistry and its application with future recommendations and limitations.

Abstract
Background: Successful regeneration depends on four key elements of tissue engineering such as stem cells, growth factors, scaffold and sterile environment. Therefore, regenerative endodontic therapy requires higher degree of disinfection for successful outcomes. Aims and Objective: To evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcome using conventional and laser assisted disinfection in regenerative endodontics at 1, 3 and 6 months. Materials and Methods: 18 children with necrotic young permanent teeth were selected for the study. In Group A, in the first appointment AAE (American Association of Endodontics, Clinical Consideration for Regenerative Endodontic Procedure - 2016) disinfection protocol was employed. In Group B laser assisted disinfection (810 nm diode laser, 1 W, 20 ms Pulse length and 20 ms interval duration) was performed. Microbial samples were obtained before and after disinfection to check the level of disinfection. The cases were followed up at 1 month, 3 months and 6 months interval and evaluated for clinical outcome, periapical healing and apical response. Data were statistically analyzed with level of significance set 1% or 5% accordingly (P<0.01 or P<0.05) Results: On intragroup comparison there was significant reduction in bacterial count before and after disinfection with respect to laser assisted disinfection group. (P value = 0.007) There was no significant change in the clinical outcome score in laser group at 1,3- and 6-months interval. Periapical healing score showed statistically significant results in laser group when followed from 3 months to 6 months (P value = 0.04). Conclusion: Along with AAE 2016 protocol, use of laser assisted disinfection resulted in improved quality of disinfection and an expeditious clinical outcome and periapical healing in necrotic young permanent teeth. Abstract
(1) Background: The regenerative procedure has established a new approach to root canal therapy, to preserve the vital pulp of the tooth. This present review aimed to describe and sum up the different approaches to regenerative endodontic treatment conducted in the last 10 years; (2) Methods: A literature search was performed in the PubMed and Cochrane Library electronic databases, supplemented by a manual search. The search strategy included the following terms: “regenerative endodontic protocol”, “regenerative endodontic treatment”, and “regenerative endodontics” combined with “pulp revascularization”. Only studies on humans, published in the last 10 years and written in English were included; (3) Results: Three hundred and eighty-six potentially significant articles were identified. After exclusion of duplicates, and meticulous analysis, 36 case reports were selected; (4) Conclusions: The pulp revascularization procedure may bring a favorable outcome, however, the prognosis of regenerative endodontics (RET) is unpredictable. Permanent immature teeth showed greater potential for positive outcomes after the regenerative procedure. Further controlled clinical studies are required to fully understand the process of the dentin–pulp complex regeneration, and the predictability of the procedure.

Abstract
Background: Root canal disinfection is considered critical for achieving successful regenerative endodontic procedures. Photo-activated disinfection is a novel disinfection method that can help to achieve the goal of regenerative endodontics. This article reports the clinical and radiographic results after single visit regenerative endodontics using photo-activated disinfection. Methods: An 8.5-year-old girl complained of fractured upper right central incisor. Pulp necrosis was diagnosed on the basis of clinical findings. The root canal was irrigated with sodium hypochlorite solution (1.5%) followed by saline. Then, the canal was dried with paper points. A combination of a photosensitizer solution and low power laser light were applied. EDTA solution was used as a final irrigant. Bleeding was induced, followed by placement of collagen resorbable matrix and white mineral trioxide aggregate. Two days later, the tooth was sealed and restored with permanent filling. Results: Clinical findings revealed no pain on percussion or palpation tests. Radiographic examination revealed an increase in root length, an increase of apical root thickness and apical closure at the 12-month follow-up period. Conclusion: Regenerative endodontics using photo-activated disinfection achieved successful outcomes in the necrotic immature permanent tooth.

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present two methods of revascularization done in traumatized immature, nonvital anterior teeth using platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and natural blood clot as a scaffold material. This was performed after disinfection of the root canal space using tri-antibacterial paste. In one tooth, PRF prepared from autologous blood was placed in the canal and in the other tooth, natural bleeding was induced to obtain a fresh blood clot. The patient was recalled regularly at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months’ interval for evaluation. After 12 months, on clinical examination, both teeth showed negative response to percussion and palpation tests but positive response to cold and electric pulp tests. On radiographic examination, the tooth treated with PRF exhibited comparatively faster root lengthening, complete closure of the root apex, more thickening of the root dentinal walls, and narrowing of root canal space compared to conventionally revascularized tooth. Abstract
This study was to test the hypothesis that root canal pretreated with photodynamic therapy (PDT) would promote stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAP) adhesion, proliferation and differentiation without affecting smear layer removal and microhardness of root canal. Standardized root canals were randomized into four groups (n = 30/group): (1) sodium hypochlorite(NaOCl) group, (2) NaOCl + ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) group, (3) NaOCl + PDT group, (4) NaOCl + EDTA + PDT group. After treatments, smear layer removal and microhardness of root canal were evaluated. SCAP with hydroxyapatite-based scaffolds were seeded into root canals for 7 days. SCAP adhesion was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and viable cells were calculated by CellTiter-Glo Luminescent kit. Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression of SCAP were evaluated by Quantitative Reverse Transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction. There was no significant difference in the smear layer removal and microhardness of root dentin between the groups with and without PDT treatment (P > 0.05). SCAP with elongated cytoplasmic processes and cell-cell contact were observed on the dentin surfaces treated with PDT. Elevated cell viability, PDGF and VEGF expression were found in root canal treated with PDT (P < 0.05). Under the experimental conditions, PDT could provide positive microenvironment for SCAP growth.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The latest research concerns the use of platelet concentrates, which are introduced into the root canal. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of platelet-rich fibrin and platelet-rich plasma in regenerative endodontics. METHODS This literature review was developed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. The literature search included all publications without a year limit. The last search was performed on January 31, 2018. An electronic search was performed using MEDLINE (PubMed), Cochrane, and Scopus. Articles were selected that addressed the following research question: Is the use of platelet concentrates effective in regenerative endodontics? The necessary information was extracted by 2 authors independently using a standardized form. RESULTS The search resulted in 426 titles from all databases, and 26 studies met the inclusion criteria. Five were randomized trials, and the others were case reports. All described cases were asymptomatic. Only 3 cases from randomized trials were unsuccessful. Ten of the case reports found positive results for pulp vitality. In randomized trials, the teeth treated with platelet concentrates showed better results for pulp vitality. In almost all cases, they also described thickening and lengthening of the root wall and closure of the apical foramen, which are important for successful treatment of permanent teeth. CONCLUSIONS This review showed that procedures using autologous platelet concentrates were successful in treating permanent teeth with root development. However, more long-term clinical studies are needed.

Abstract
Background Blood Clot (BC) or platelet concentrates have been used as scaffold in regenerative endodontic treatment (RET). The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the performance of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) with BC in inducing root development and periapical lesion healing after tooth revascularization. Methods Five patients receiving RET using PRF as a scaffold were matched 1:1 to a previous cohort of 5 patients who underwent tooth revascularization by provoking periapical bleeding. Clinical signs and symptoms were examined at follow-ups. Periapical lesion healing and root development were monitored radiographically. The resolution of clinical signs and symptoms as well as periapical radiolucency was observed in all patients (100%). Results Root elongation, dentinal wall thickening and apex closure were found in most cases (80% in both groups). There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of clinical sign resolution, root development and periapical healing. Conclusions Within the limits of this study, PRF achieved comparable outcomes to BC in terms of clinical sign and symptom resolution, periapical lesion healing and continued root development in RET.

Abstract
Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is a dental material used extensively for vital pulp therapies (VPT), protecting scaffolds during regenerative endodontic procedures, apical barriers in teeth with necrotic pulps and open apices, perforation repairs as well as root canal filling and root-end filling during surgical endodontics. A number of bioactive endodontic cements (BECs) have recently been introduced to the market. Most of these materials have calcium and silicate in their compositions; however, bioactivity is a common property of these cements. These materials include the following: BioAggregate, Biodentine, BioRoot RCS, calcium-enriched mixture cement, Endo-CPM, Endocem, EndoSequence, EndoBinder, EndoSeal MTA, iRoot, MicroMega MTA, MTA Bio, MTA Fillapex, MTA Plus, Neo MTA Plus, Ortho MTA, Quick-Set, Retro MTA, Tech Biosealer, and TheraCal LC. It has been claimed that these materials have properties similar to those of MTA but without the drawbacks. In Part I of this review, the available information on the chemical composition of the materials listed above was reviewed and their applications for VPT was discussed. In this article, the clinical applications of MTA and other BECs will be reviewed for apexification, regenerative endodontics, perforation repair, root canal filling, root-end filling, restorative procedures, periodontal defects and treatment of vertical and horizontal root fractures. In addition, the literature regarding the possible drawbacks of these materials following their clinical applications is reviewed. These drawbacks include their discolouration potential, systemic effects and retreatability following use as a root filling material. Based on selected keywords, all publications were searched regarding the use of MTA as well as BECs for the relevant clinical applications. Numerous publications were found regarding the use of BECs for various endodontic applications. The majority of these investigations compared BECs with MTA. Despite promising results for some materials, the number of publications using BECs for various clinical applications was limited. Furthermore, most studies had several methodological shortcomings and low levels of evidence.

Abstract
Regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) associated with apical surgery could represent an alternative treatment strategy for patients whose teeth present incomplete root formation and extensive apical lesions. Leukocyte platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) has potential benefits in REPs; it could promote apical root formation and optimal bone healing. The aim of this case report was to describe innovative regenerative endodontic therapy using L-PRF in the root canal and an extensive apical lesion in an immature tooth with dens invaginatus and asymptomatic apical periodontitis. A healthy 20-year-old woman was referred to the dental clinic of the Universidad de Los Andes, Santiago, Chile, for endodontic treatment in tooth # 22 with incomplete root development and an extensive apical lesion. The diagnosis was asymptomatic apical periodontitis associated with dens invaginatus type II. The patient was treated with an innovative approach using L-PRF in REPs associated with apical surgery. Follow-ups were performed at 6 months and 1 year later. They included periapical radiographs, cone-beam computed tomographic imaging, sensitivity, and vitality tests. The clinical evaluations performed at 6 months and 1 year revealed an absence of symptoms. The radiographic evaluations showed that the apical lesion was resolved. The cone-beam images indicated that the root length increased and the walls had thickened. The sensitivity tests were positive, and the laser Doppler flowmetry showed positive blood flow after 1 year. The success of the results in this case report indicate that L-PRF can be used as a complement in apical surgery and REPs and could provide an innovative alternative treatment strategy for complex clinical cases like these.

Abstract
Regenerative endodontics has been defined as “biologically based procedure designed to replace damaged structures, including dentin and root structures, as well as cells of the pulp–dentin complex.” This is an exciting and rapidly evolving field of human endodontics for the treatment of immature permanent teeth with infected root canal systems. These procedures have shown to be able not only to resolve pain and apical periodontitis but continued root development, thus increasing the thickness and strength of the previously thin and fracture-prone roots. In the last decade, over 80 case reports, numerous animal studies, and series of regenerative endodontic cases have been published. However, even with multiple successful case reports, there are still some remaining questions regarding terminology, patient selection, and procedural details. Regenerative endodontics provides the hope of converting a nonvital tooth into vital one once again.

Abstract
Commonly used irrigants do not always eradicate the entire microbial flora in infected root canals. Therefore, several other strategies, such as photodynamic therapy (PDT) have been developed. Photoactivated disinfection is based on the interaction of a photosensitive antibacterial agent and a light source. It uses a nontoxic dye named photosensitizer (PS) and low-intensity visible light. In oxygen presentation, these combine to produce some cytotoxic species. The PS molecules attach to bacteria membrane. Irradiation with a specific wavelength of the light may lead to the production of singlet oxygen, resulting in rupture of the microbial cell wall. There are several applications for PDT in dentistry. A successful periodontal treatment is based on elimination of bacteria from the infected area. Phenothiazinium PSs have been shown to be highly effective and safe for this purpose. However, scaling/root planing should be performed before the PDT. While performing the PDT, PS should be first injected in the periodontal pocket and allowed to pigment. Then, the special fiber should be inserted 1 mm short of the pocket base and lased. Photodynamic therapy has also been used to disinfect caries dentin before restoration, disinfecting oral tissues before or during surgical procedures, treating denture stomatitis, and treating oral candidiasis in immunocompromised patients. Photodynamic therapy can be used in combination with mechanical instrumentation and chemical antimicrobial agents, such as sodium hypochlo-rite, too. The purpose of this study was to review historical perspective, mechanism of action, and applications of PDT in dentistry and especially in endodontics was reviewed. Furthermore, the effects of PDT on dentin bonding and endo-toxin are discussed. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Photodynamic therapy has been advocated to increase the disinfection level of the root canal system.

Abstract
This report compares and evaluates the treatment outcomes of regenerative endodontic treatment and apical plug as two accepted treatment protocols in a pair of necrotic immature maxillary central incisors of a 12-year old female. The patient was referred complaining of a dull pain and swelling in her upper lip area. She had a history of trauma to the anterior maxilla two years earlier. Both teeth were clinically diagnosed with pulp necrosis and periapical radiographs revealed that separate periapical radiolucent lesions surrounded the immature apices of both teeth. The left and right incisors were treated with apical plug and regenerative endodontic treatment, respectively, using calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cement. The patient was followed-up for three years. During this period, both teeth were clinically asymptomatic and showed complete radiographic healing of the periapical lesions. The right central incisor showed root development. No tooth discoloration was evident. Apexification by apical plug placement and pulp regeneration are both reliable treatments for immature non-vital teeth. In order to choose the right treatment the advantages of either technique should be weighed against its drawbacks. CEM cement can be successfully applied for both purposes. This biomaterial causes less discoloration of the tooth.

Abstract
The current literature was reviewed to determine the impact of autologous platelet concentrates (APCs) on endodontic healing. All types of clinical study designs concerning any kind of endodontic treatment involving the application of APCs were included. Two independent reviewers searched three databases (PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library) for studies, complemented by hand search, until 16/1/2016. From the 423 identified records, 48 articles met the inclusion criteria. Selected randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) underwent Cochrane Collaboration's risk-of-bias assessment and data extraction. Only two RCTs showed low risk of bias. There was considerable heterogeneity between the RCTs with regard to the type of therapy, type of APCs, assessment method, and study quality, and therefore the data could not be analyzed quantitatively. The included case reports/series and non-randomized comparative studies underwent qualitative analysis with the revised Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (MINORS) and data extraction. The two comparative non-randomized studies scored qualitatively high, though the MINORS-scores of the case series and reports were dispersed. APCs were involved in five endodontic treatment modalities, namely apexification, regenerative endodontic procedures, pulpotomy, apical surgery, and treatment of endo-perio/perio-endo lesions. APCs seem to accelerate postoperative bone healing, augment the patients' postoperative quality of life, aid further root development, and support maintenance/regaining of pulp vitality. No adverse events were reported. APCs in endodontic treatments seem to contribute to the healing of soft and hard tissues, though there is a lack of long-term high quality clinical trials and standardized treatment protocols.

Abstract
Regenerative endodontics aims to replace inflamed/necrotic pulp tissues with regenerated pulp-like tissues to revitalize teeth and improve life quality. Pulp revascularization case reports, which showed successful clinical and radiographic outcomes, indicated the possible clinical application of pulp regeneration via cell homing strategy. From a clinical point of view, functional pulp-like tissues should be regenerated with the characterization of vascularization, re-innervation, and dentin deposition with a regulated rate similar to that of normal pulp. Efficient root canal disinfection and proper size of the apical foramen are the two requisite preconditions for pulp regeneration. Progress has been made on pulp regeneration via cell homing strategies. This review focused on the requisite preconditions and cell homing strategies for pulp regeneration. In addition to the traditionally used mechanical preparation and irrigation, antibiotics, irrigation assisted with EndoVac apical negative-pressure system, and ultrasonic and laser irradiation are now being used in root canal disinfection. In addition, pulp-like tissues could be formed with the apical foramen less than 1 mm, although more studies are needed to determine the appropriate size. Moreover, signaling molecules including stromal cell derived factor (SDF-1α), basic Fibroblast Growth Factor (bFGF), Platelet Derived Growth Factor (PDGF), stem cell factor (SCF), and Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor (G-CSF) were used to achieve pulp-like tissue formation via a cell homing strategy. Studies on the cell sources of pulp regeneration might give some indications on the signaling molecular selection. The active recruitment of endogenous cells into root canals to regenerate pulp-like tissues is a novel concept that may offer an unprecedented opportunity for the near-term clinical translation of current biology-based therapies for dental pulp regeneration.

Abstract
Root canal treatment of teeth presenting immature development is a great challenge for both the patient and the professional. The thinness of the root canal walls of immature teeth may lead to root fracture and thus the outcomes of such treatments are uncertain. Revascularization is based on root canal decontamination followed by the induction of blood migration from the periapical tissues and the development of new vascular tissue in the canal space. The principle of disinfection in regenerative endodontics is that it should be achieved with minimum root canal instrumentation; an intracanal medication is used to inhibit bacterial growth and appropriate sealing of the coronal portion is performed. The American Association of Endodontists (AAE) considerations for regenerative endodontics include calcium hydroxide as an alternative intracanal dressing. This material has also been claimed to diminish the possibility of dental staining during revascularization procedures. The relatively new treatment protocol has been widely reported in the last few years; however it should be performed only when other alternatives are not reasonable. This case report presents a 3-year follow-up of a case of revascularization of a maxillary central incisor using calcium hydroxide as a root canal disinfection dressing.

Abstract
The aim of this article is to review the outcomes of platelet preparations in dentistry. A structured electronic search discovered 348 articles, which described the use of autologous platelet concentrates with a relevance to clinical dentistry. Among these articles, 220 articles investigated platelet rich plasma, 99 investigated platelet rich fibrin, 22 investigated plasma rich in growth factors and 7 investigated the use of concentrated growth factors. Several studies reported beneficial treament outcomes in terms of enhanced bone and soft tissue regeneration.
