As climate change causes marine heat waves to become more intense and frequent, marine species increasingly suffer from heat stress. This stress can result in reduced growth, disrupted breeding cycles, vulnerability to diseases and pathogens, and increased mortality rates. Abalone (genus Haliotis) are an ecologically significant group of marine gastropods and are among the most highly valued seafood products. However, heat stress events have had devastating impacts on both farmed and wild populations. Members of this genus are among the most susceptible marine species to climate change impacts, with over 40% of all abalone species listed as threatened with extinction. This has motivated researchers to explore the genetics linked to heat stress in abalone. A substantial portion of publicly available studies has employed transcriptomic approaches to investigate abalone genetic response to heat stress. However, to date, no meta-analysis has been conducted to determine the common response to heat stress (i.e. the core response) across the genus. This study uses a standardized bioinformatic pipeline to reanalyze and compare publicly available RNA-seq datasets from different heat stress studies on abalone.

Nine publicly available RNA-seq datasets from nine different heat-stress studies on abalone from seven different abalone species and three hybrids were included in the meta-analysis. We identified a core set of 74 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in response to heat stress in at least seven out of nine studies. This core set of DEGs mainly included genes associated with alternative splicing, heat shock proteins (HSPs), Ubiquitin-Proteasome System (UPS), and other protein folding and protein processing pathways.

The detection of a consistent set of genes that respond to heat stress across various studies, despite differences in experimental design (e.g. stress intensity, species studied-geographical distribution, preferred temperature range, etc.), strengthens our proposal that these genes are key elements of the heat stress response in abalone. The identification of the core response to heat stress in abalone lays an important foundation for future research. Ultimately, this study will aid conservation efforts and aquaculture through the identification of resilient populations, genetic-based breeding programs, possible manipulations such as early exposure to stress, gene editing and the use of immunostimulants to enhance thermal tolerance.

Fipronil (FPN) as an insecticide can excessively enter aquatic ecosystems and may act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals by binding to estrogen receptor (ER) or aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). Currently, there is limited information on the xenoestrogen role of FPN in the transcriptional modulation of hepatic genes involved in cell apoptosis. Three experiments were used in this study to determine how the FPN interference between the ER, AhR, and intermediate chaperons can induce apoptosis and change the expression of erα, erβ, erβ2, hsp70, hsp90, p53, bad1, bcl2, ahr, cyp1a, and caspase9 genes in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) hepatocytes. The IC50 values of FPN and 17β estradiol (E2) (positive control) in fish hepatocytes were determined (5 µg/mL). In the first experiment, exposure (6, 24, and 48 h) of hepatocytes to the low (0.1 µg/mL) and high (1 µg/mL) doses of FPN up-regulated apoptosis, pro-apoptotic genes (caspase9 and bad1), and chaperone protein genes (hsp70 and hsp90), while down-regulated anti-apoptotic genes (p53and bcl2). Additionally, there was a significant increase in the expression of the genes erα, ahr, and cyp1a that was dependent on both time and dose. ERα antagonist and a high dose of FPN were administered to the hepatocytes in the second experiment, which reduced cell apoptosis. In the third experiment, anti-apoptotic gene expression increased, and cell apoptosis and ahr and cyp1a gene expression significantly decreased when HSP90 and ERα antagonists were applied in comparison to the control group (P < 0.05). Based on this study, we demonstrate that FPN-induced apoptosis in fish hepatocytes is mediated by erα and hsp90 through transcriptional regulation of pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic genes.

Liver transplantation is the only curative option for end-stage liver disease. Donor shortages necessitate the use of higher risk donor livers, including fatty livers, which are more susceptible to ischemia-reperfusion injury. Machine perfusion has improved graft utilization and is typically performed at hypothermic (8-12°C) or normothermic (35-37°C) temperatures. Here we studied the impact of mild hyperthermia (40°C) as a therapeutic intervention for fatty livers using in-depth proteomic and lipoprotein profiling of whole organ perfusion and precision-cut liver slices. We observed proteomic changes with metabolic alterations over time, evidenced by a significant increase in lipid export in whole organ perfusions. Furthermore, PCLS showed significant upregulation of metabolic processes and heat shock protein response after 24 h of hyperthermia. Machine perfusion under hyperthermic conditions may be a potential strategy to improve the utilization of fatty liver grafts, ultimately expanding the donor pool and improving transplant outcomes.

The skin is the most extensive organ in the human body. Photo exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays causes several damages to skin cells, including premature skin aging, the onset of possible DNA mutations, and the risk of developing cancers, including melanoma. Protecting skin from the damaging effects of sun exposure through the application of creams and filters is important to prevent irreversible damages. Several natural extracts and biomolecules with antioxidant activity are widely used in the production of dietary supplements or topical products, for the prevention and treatment of skin affections. Within this context, we pre-treated human skin fibroblasts (HFF1), skin-isolated stem cells (SSCs) and keratinocytes (HaCaT) with two creams containing a specific solar protection factor (SPF) for 72 h and then exposed the cells to UV light. Gene expression analysis was performed for the key cell cycle regulators (p16, p19, p21, p53 and TERT). Cell senescence was assessed by colorimetric assays of beta-galactosidase and antioxidant potential, revealing the ability of treated cells to counteract free radical production as a result of oxidative stress. Finally, possible mutations in DNA induced by photo exposure were studied. The results obtained demonstrated that the tested products elicit positive effects on all skin cell populations, preserving them from photo exposure damages and premature senescence, being also able to increase the DNA repairing mechanisms and inducing a youngest phenotype.

Cells rely on the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to fold and assemble newly synthesized transmembrane and secretory proteins - essential for cellular structure-function and for both intracellular and intercellular communication. To ensure the operative fidelity of the ER, eukaryotic cells leverage the unfolded protein response (UPR) - a stress-sensing and signalling network that maintains homeostasis by rebalancing the biosynthetic capacity of the ER according to need. The metazoan UPR can also redirect signalling from cytoprotective adaptation to programmed cell death if homeostasis restoration fails. As such, the UPR benefits multicellular organisms by preserving optimally functioning cells while removing damaged ones. Nevertheless, dysregulation of the UPR can be harmful. In this Review, we discuss the UPR and its regulatory processes as a paradigm in health and disease. We highlight important recent advances in molecular and mechanistic understanding of the UPR that enable greater precision in designing and developing innovative strategies to harness its potential for therapeutic gain. We underscore the rheostatic character of the UPR, its contextual nature and critical open questions for its further elucidation.

Neurodegenerative disorders are associated with the accumulation of disease-related proteins intracellularly and extracellularly. Extracellular chaperones play a crucial role in clearing the extracellularly accumulated proteins. In this study, we observed the extracellular chaperone-like potential of BSA at physiological concentrations on model protein cytochrome c (cyt c). Kinetics of heat-induced aggregation of cyt c suggest the nucleation independent first order aggregation kinetics. Aggregation of cyt c was studied in the presence of varying concentrations of BSA to assess its chaperone nature. At lower concentrations of BSA when the sub molar ratio of cyt c:BSA are 1:0.6 and 1:1.2, heat-induced unfolded cyt c promotes the aggregation of BSA. However, as the ratio of cyt c:BSA increases to 1:1.8, the aggregation of cyt c is reduced. When the concentration of BSA reaches physiological levels, yielding a cyt c:BSA ratio of 1:2.4, the rate of aggregation drastically decreases reflecting its chaperone potential. These observations indicate that under physiological conditions, macromolecular crowding stabilizes the native structure of both proteins and enhances their interaction that results in the reduced aggregation of cyt c. Additionally, the presence of the phytochemical chlorogenic acid at a sub-molar ratio of 1:1 stabilizes cyt c and prevents its unfolding and facilitates the binding of cyt c to BSA at physiological concentrations. This interaction further decreases the overall aggregation of cyt c and stabilizes its native fold.

The bacterial protein quality control (PQC) network comprises a set of genes that promote proteostasis (proteome homeostasis) through proper protein folding and function via chaperones, proteases, and protein translational machinery. It participates in vital cellular processes and influences organismal development and evolution. In this review, we examine the mechanistic bases for how the bacterial PQC network influences molecular evolution. We discuss the relevance of PQC components to contemporary issues in evolutionary biology including epistasis, evolvability, and the navigability of protein space. We examine other areas where proteostasis affects aspects of evolution and physiology, including host-parasite interactions. More generally, we demonstrate that the study of bacterial systems can aid in broader efforts to understand the relationship between genotype and phenotype across the biosphere.

White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are commonly detected on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, occurring in both typical aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Despite their frequent appearance and their association with cognitive decline in AD, the molecular factors contributing to WMHs remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the transcriptomic profiles of two commonly affected brain regions with coincident AD pathology-frontal subcortical white matter (frontal-WM) and occipital subcortical white matter (occipital-WM)-and compared with age-matched cognitively intact controls. Through RNA-sequencing in frontal- and occipital-WM bulk tissues, we identified an upregulation of genes associated with brain vasculature function in AD white matter. To further elucidate vasculature-specific transcriptomic features, we performed RNA-seq analysis on blood vessels isolated from these white matter regions, which revealed an upregulation of genes related to protein folding pathways. Finally, comparing gene expression profiles between AD individuals with high- versus low-WMH burden showed an increased expression of pathways associated with immune function. Taken together, our study characterizes the diverse molecular profiles of white matter changes in AD and provides mechanistic insights into the processes underlying AD-related WMHs.

Neurodegenerative diseases, notably Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, hallmark their progression through the formation of amyloid aggregates resulting from misfolding. While current therapeutics alleviate symptoms, they do not impede disease onset. In this context, repurposing existing drugs stands as a viable therapeutic strategy. Our study determines the antihistamine drug Cimetidine's potential as an inhibitor using diverse spectroscopic and microscopic methods on alpha-synuclein and human insulin amyloid formation, unveiling its efficacy. The thioflavin T (ThT) assay illustrated a dose-dependent reduction in amyloid formation with escalating concentrations of Cimetidine. Notably, the antihistamine drug maintained a helical structure and showed no significant conformational changes in the secondary structure. Confocal microscopy validated fewer fibrils in the Cimetidine-treated samples. Remarkably, Cimetidine interacted with pre-existing fibrils, leading to their disintegration. Further analyses (ThT, circular dichroism, and dynamic light scattering) showcased the conversion of fibrils into smaller aggregates upon Cimetidine addition. These findings signify the potential of this antihistamine drug as a plausible therapeutic option for Parkinson's disease. This study may open avenues for deeper investigations and possible therapeutic developments, emphasizing Cimetidine's promising role in mitigating neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's.

Protein aggregation plays key roles in age-related degenerative diseases, but how different proteins coalesce to form inclusions that vary in composition, morphology, molecular dynamics and confer physiological consequences is poorly understood. Here we employ a general reporter based on mutant Hsp104 to identify proteins forming aggregates in human cells under common proteotoxic stress. We identify over 300 proteins that form different inclusions containing subsets of aggregating proteins. In particular, TDP43, implicated in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), partitions dynamically between two distinct types of aggregates: stress granule and a previously unknown non-dynamic (solid-like) inclusion at the ER exit sites (ERES). TDP43-ERES co-aggregation is induced by diverse proteotoxic stresses and observed in the motor neurons of ALS patients. Such aggregation causes retention of secretory cargos at ERES and therefore delays ER-to-Golgi transport, providing a link between TDP43 aggregation and compromised cellular function in ALS patients.

Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) are specialized immune cells produced from hematopoietic stem cells (HSC). They actively surveil for any signs of infection, foreign invaders, and abnormal or aberrant cells associated with diseases. Numerous inherent interactions between PBMCs and proliferating cancer cells facilitate cellular communication, inducing alterations in the composition of the PBMCs. These subtle alterations can be detected by using dielectrophoresis (DEP). The ultimate objective is to apply this knowledge in a clinical setting to achieve noninvasive early detection of breast cancer while minimizing the occurrence of false positives and negatives commonly associated with standard screening methods like mammography. To realize our long-term goal, we are probing the dielectric properties of the PBMCs from FVB/N MMTV-PyMT+ (late carcinoma, PyMT+ PBMC) and FVB/N (wild-type, WT-PBMC) age-matched mice at 14+ weeks using dielectrophoresis on a microfluidic platform. The central hypothesis of this research is that the changes triggered in the subcellular components, such as the cytoskeleton, lipid bilayer membrane, cytoplasm, focal adhesion proteins, and extracellular matrix (ECM) at the onset of carcinoma, regulate dielectric properties (conductivity, σ; and permittivity, ε), thus affecting the bioelectric signals that aid in the detection of breast cancer. The ANOVA results suggest a significant difference in PyMT+ PBMCs crossover frequencies at 0.01 and 0.05 S/m medium conductivity levels. Post hoc pairwise analysis of WT-PBMCs showed that the crossover frequencies are distinct across the medium conductivity ranges from 0.01 to 0.05 S/m. This study revealed that on average, PyMT+ PBMCs have increased crossover frequency, polarizability, higher membrane capacitance, and a folding factor compared with the age-matched wild-type PBMCs.

Many species are threatened by climate change and must rapidly respond to survive in changing environments. Epigenetic modifications, such as DNA methylation, can facilitate plastic responses by regulating gene expression in response to environmental cues. Understanding epigenetic responses is therefore essential for predicting species' ability to rapidly adapt in the context of global environmental change. Here, we investigated the functional significance of different methylation-associated cellular processes on temperature-dependent life history in seed beetles, Callosobruchus maculatus Fabricius 1775 (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). We assessed changes under thermal stress in (1) DNA methyltransferase (Dnmt1 and Dnmt2) expression levels, (2) genome-wide methylation and (3) reproductive performance, with (2) and (3) following treatment with 3-aminobenzamide (3AB) and zebularine (Zeb) over two generations. These drugs are well-documented to alter DNA methylation across the tree of life. We found that Dnmt1 and Dnmt2 were expressed throughout the body in males and females, but were highly expressed in females compared with males and exhibited temperature dependence. However, whole-genome methylation did not significantly vary with temperature, and only marginally or inconclusively with drug treatment. Both 3AB and Zeb led to profound temperature-dependent shifts in female reproductive life history trade-off allocation, often increasing fitness compared with control beetles. Mismatch between magnitude of treatment effects on DNA methylation versus life history effects suggest potential of 3AB and Zeb to alter reproductive trade-offs via changes in DNA repair and recycling processes, rather than or in addition to (subtle) changes in DNA methylation. Together, our results suggest that epigenetic mechanisms relating to Dnmt expression, DNA repair and recycling pathways, and possibly DNA methylation, are strongly implicated in modulating insect life history trade-offs in response to temperature change.

There is an increasing amount of evidence that biomolecular condensates are linked to neurodegenerative diseases associated with protein aggregation, such as Alzheimer's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, although the mechanisms underlying this link remain elusive. In this Review, we summarize the possible connections between condensates and protein aggregation. We consider both liquid-to-solid transitions of phase-separated proteins and the partitioning of proteins into host condensates. We distinguish five key factors by which the physical and chemical environment of a condensate can influence protein aggregation, and we discuss their relevance in studies of protein aggregation in the presence of biomolecular condensates: increasing the local concentration of proteins, providing a distinct chemical microenvironment, introducing an interface wherein proteins can localize, changing the energy landscape of aggregation pathways, and the presence of chaperones in condensates. Analysing the role of biomolecular condensates in protein aggregation may be essential for a full understanding of amyloid formation and offers a new perspective that can help in developing new therapeutic strategies for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex neurological ailment that causes cognitive decline and memory loss. Cholesterol metabolism dysregulation has emerged as a crucial element in AD pathogenesis, contributing to the formation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and tau tangles, the disease's hallmark neuropathological characteristics. Thus, targeting cholesterol metabolism has gained attention as a potential therapeutic method for Alzheimer's disease. Phytoremedies, which are generated from plants and herbs, have shown promise as an attainable therapeutic option for Alzheimer's disease. These remedies contain bioactive compounds like phytochemicals, flavonoids, and polyphenols, which have demonstrated potential in modulating cholesterol metabolism and related pathways. This comprehensive review explores the modulation of cholesterol metabolism by phytoremedies in AD. It delves into the role of cholesterol in brain function, highlighting disruptions observed in AD. Additionally, it examines the underlying molecular mechanisms of cholesterol-related pathology in AD. The review emphasizes the significance of phytoremedies as a potential therapeutic intervention for AD. It discusses the drawbacks of current treatments and the need for alternative strategies addressing cholesterol dysregulation and its consequences. Through an in-depth analysis of specific phytoremedies, the review presents compelling evidence of their potential benefits. Molecular mechanisms underlying phytoremedy effects on cholesterol metabolism are examined, including regulation of cholesterol-related pathways, interactions with Aβ pathology, influence on tau pathology, and anti-inflammatory effects. The review also highlights challenges and future perspectives, emphasizing standardization, clinical evidence, and personalized medicine approaches to maximize therapeutic potential in AD treatment. Overall, phytoremedies offer promise as a potential avenue for AD management, but further research and collaboration are necessary to fully explore their efficacy, safety, and mechanisms of action.

Prion diseases are deadly neurodegenerative disorders in both animals and humans, causing the destruction of neural tissue and inducing behavioral manifestations. Heat shock proteins (Hsps), act as molecular chaperones by supporting the appropriate folding of proteins and eliminating the misfolded proteins as well as playing a vital role in cell signaling transduction, cell cycle, and apoptosis control. SW02 is a potent activator of Hsp 70 kDa (Hsp70).

In the current study, the protective effects of SW02 against prion protein 106-126 (PrP106-126)-induced neurotoxicity in human neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y) were investigated. In addition, the therapeutic effects of SW02 in ME7 scrapie-infected mice were evaluated.

The results showed that SW02 treatment significantly increased Hsp70 mRNA expression levels and Hsp70 ATPase activity (p < 0.01). SW02 also significantly inhibited cytotoxicity and apoptosis induced by PrP106-126 (p < 0.01) and promoted neurite extension. In vivo, intraperitoneal administration of SW02 did not show a statistically significant difference in survival time (p = 0.16); however, the SW02-treated group exhibited a longer survival time of 223.6 ± 6.0 days compared with the untreated control group survival time of 217.6 ± 5.4 days. In addition, SW02 reduced the PrPSc accumulation in ME7 scrapie-infected mice at 5 months post-injection (p < 0.05). A significant difference was not observed in GFAP expression, an astrocyte marker, between the treated and untreated groups.

In conclusion, the potential therapeutic role of the Hsp70 activator SW02 was determined in the present study and may be a novel and effective drug to mitigate the pathologies of prion diseases and other neurodegenerative diseases. Further studies using a combination of two pharmacological activators of Hsp70 are required to maximize the effectiveness of each intervention.

The gastrointestinal tract has a pivotal role in nutrient absorption, immune function, and overall homeostasis. The ileum segment of the small intestine plays respective roles in nutrient breakdown and absorption. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of heat-induced oxidative stress and the potential mitigating effects of an astaxanthin antioxidant treatment on the ileum of broilers. By comparing the growth performance and gene expression profiles among three groups-thermal neutral, heat stress, and heat stress with astaxanthin-thermal neutral temperature conditions of 21-22 °C and heat stress temperature of 32-35 °C, this research aims to elucidate the role of astaxanthin in supporting homeostasis and cellular protection in the ileum. Results showed both treatments under heat stress experienced reduced growth performance, while the group treated with astaxanthin showed a slightly lesser decline. Results further showed the astaxanthin treatment group significantly upregulated in the cytoprotective gene expression for HSF2, SOD2, GPX3, and TXN, as well as the upregulation of epithelial integrity genes LOX, CLDN1, and MUC2. In conclusion, our experimental findings demonstrate upregulation of cytoprotective and epithelial integrity genes, suggesting astaxanthin may effectively enhance the cellular response to heat stress to mitigate oxidative damage and contribute to cytoprotective capacity.

Aging is a complex and time-dependent decline in physiological function that affects most organisms, leading to increased risk of age-related diseases. Investigating the molecular underpinnings of aging is crucial to identify geroprotectors, precisely quantify biological age, and propose healthy longevity approaches. This review explores pathways that are currently being investigated as intervention targets and aging biomarkers spanning molecular, cellular, and systemic dimensions. Interventions that target these hallmarks may ameliorate the aging process, with some progressing to clinical trials. Biomarkers of these hallmarks are used to estimate biological aging and risk of aging-associated disease. Utilizing aging biomarkers, biological aging clocks can be constructed that predict a state of abnormal aging, age-related diseases, and increased mortality. Biological age estimation can therefore provide the basis for a fine-grained risk stratification by predicting all-cause mortality well ahead of the onset of specific diseases, thus offering a window for intervention. Yet, despite technological advancements, challenges persist due to individual variability and the dynamic nature of these biomarkers. Addressing this requires longitudinal studies for robust biomarker identification. Overall, utilizing the hallmarks of aging to discover new drug targets and develop new biomarkers opens new frontiers in medicine. Prospects involve multi-omics integration, machine learning, and personalized approaches for targeted interventions, promising a healthier aging population.

Temperature and mineralization are among the most important environmental factors affecting all processes of aquatic ecosystems, including geographical distribution of water animals. Previously we showed that a brackish water population of Gammarus lacustris, a widespread amphipod, demonstrates substantially higher thermotolerance than a freshwater population. A possible reason for this difference is the fact that brackish water conditions are closer to internal media mineralization. Here we aimed to test this hypothesis and relate the observed effects in animal survival under the heat shock to the status of cellular defence systems. We acclimated four groups of amphipods from the same freshwater population to 0.5 ‰ and 15 ‰ at the temperatures of 6°С or 15°С. Acclimation at 6°С, but not at 15°С, to 15 ‰ significantly increased resistance of the amphipods to heat shock at 30°C. At 6°С activities of antioxidant enzymes and levels of the lipid peroxidation products in G. lacustris did not react to the increase in mineralization and the heat shock, while the level of HSP70 elevated two-fold in amphipods acclimated to mineralization of 15 ‰ compared to animals acclimated to 0.5 ‰. Thus, the observed increase in thermotolerance could be explained by the higher initial level of HSP70 and potentially other heat shock proteins caused by a less energy-demanding, more isotonic level.

Employing microbial systems for the bioremediation of contaminated waters represent a potential option, however, limited understanding of the underlying mechanisms hampers the implication of microbial-mediated bioremediation. The omics tools offer a promising approach to explore the molecular basis of the bioremediation process. Here, a mass spectrometry-based quantitative proteome profiling approach was conducted to explore the differential protein levels in cadmium-treated Paramecium multimicronucleatum. The Proteome Discoverer software was used to identify and quantify differentially abundant proteins. The proteome profiling generated 7,416 peptide spectral matches, yielding 2824 total peptides, corresponding to 989 proteins. The analysis revealed that 29 proteins exhibited significant (p ≤ 0.05) differential levels, including a higher abundance of 6 proteins and reduced levels of 23 proteins in Cd2+ treated samples. These differentially abundant proteins were associated with stress response, energy metabolism, protein degradation, cell growth, and hormone processing. Briefly, a comprehensive proteome profile in response to cadmium stress of a newly isolated Paramecium has been established that will be useful in future studies identifying critical proteins involved in the bioremediation of metals in ciliates. SIGNIFICANCE: Ciliates are considered a good biological indicator of chemical pollution and relatively sensitive to heavy metal contamination. A prominent ciliate, Paramecium is a promising candidate for the bioremediation of polluted water. The proteins related to metal resistance in Paramecium species are still largely unknown and need further exploration. In order to identify and reveal the proteins related to metal resistance in Paramecia, we have reported differential protein abundance in Paramecium multimicronucleatum in response to cadmium stress. The proteins found in our study play essential roles during stress response, hormone processing, protein degradation, energy metabolism, and cell growth. It seems likely that Paramecia are not a simple sponge for metals but they could also transform them into less toxic derivatives or by detoxification by protein binding. This data will be helpful in future studies to identify critical proteins along with their detailed mechanisms involved in the bioremediation and detoxification of metal ions in Paramecium species.

Cells must sense and respond to sudden maladaptive environmental changes-stresses-to survive and thrive. Across eukaryotes, stresses such as heat shock trigger conserved responses: growth arrest, a specific transcriptional response, and biomolecular condensation of protein and mRNA into structures known as stress granules under severe stress. The composition, formation mechanism, adaptive significance, and even evolutionary conservation of these condensed structures remain enigmatic. Here we provide a remarkable view into stress-triggered condensation, its evolutionary conservation and tuning, and its integration into other well-studied aspects of the stress response. Using three morphologically near-identical budding yeast species adapted to different thermal environments and diverged by up to 100 million years, we show that proteome-scale biomolecular condensation is tuned to species-specific thermal niches, closely tracking corresponding growth and transcriptional responses. In each species, poly(A)-binding protein-a core marker of stress granules-condenses in isolation at species-specific temperatures, with conserved molecular features and conformational changes modulating condensation. From the ecological to the molecular scale, our results reveal previously unappreciated levels of evolutionary selection in the eukaryotic stress response, while establishing a rich, tractable system for further inquiry.

In all domains of life, Hsp70 chaperones preserve protein homeostasis by promoting protein folding and degradation and preventing protein aggregation. We now report that the Hsp70 from the bacterial pathogen Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium-termed DnaK-independently reduces protein synthesis in vitro and in S. Typhimurium facing cytoplasmic Mg2+ starvation, a condition encountered during infection. This reduction reflects a 3-fold increase in ribosome association with DnaK and a 30-fold decrease in ribosome association with trigger factor, the chaperone normally associated with translating ribosomes. Surprisingly, this reduction does not involve J-domain cochaperones, unlike previously known functions of DnaK. Removing the 74 C-terminal amino acids of the 638-residue long DnaK impeded DnaK association with ribosomes and reduction of protein synthesis, rendering S. Typhimurium defective in protein homeostasis during cytoplasmic Mg2+ starvation. DnaK-dependent reduction in protein synthesis is critical for survival against Mg2+ starvation because inhibiting protein synthesis in a dnaK-independent manner overcame the 10,000-fold loss in viability resulting from DnaK truncation. Our results indicate that DnaK protects bacteria from infection-relevant stresses by coordinating protein synthesis with protein folding capacity.

Proteolytic activity constitutes a fundamental process essential for the survival of the malaria parasite and is thus highly regulated. Falstatin, a protease inhibitor of Plasmodium falciparum, tightly regulates the activity of cysteine hemoglobinases, falcipain-2 and 3 (FP2, FP3), by inhibiting FP2 through a single surface exposed loop. However, the multimeric nature of falstatin and its interaction with FP2 remained unexplored. Here we report that the N-terminal falstatin region is highly disordered, and needs chaperone activity (heat-shock protein 70, HSP70) for its folding. Protein-protein interaction assays showed a significant interaction between falstatin and HSP70. Further, characterization of the falstatin multimer through a series of biophysical techniques identified the formation of a falstatin decamer, which was extremely thermostable. Computational analysis of the falstatin decamer showed the presence of five falstatin dimers, with each dimer aligned in a head-to-tail orientation. Further, the falstatin C-terminal region was revealed to be primarily involved in the oligomerization process. Stoichiometric analysis of the FP2-falstatin multimer showed the formation of a heterooligomeric complex in a 1:1 ratio, with the participation of ten subunits of each protein. Taken together, our results report a novel protease-inhibitor complex and strengthens our understanding of the regulatory mechanisms of major plasmodium hemoglobinases.

The formation of protein aggregates in the brain is a central aspect of the pathology of many neurodegenerative diseases. This self-assembly of specific proteins into filamentous aggregates, or fibrils, is a fundamental biophysical process that can easily be reproduced in the test tube. However, it has been difficult to obtain a clear picture of how the biophysical insights thus obtained can be applied to the complex, multi-factorial diseases and what this means for therapeutic strategies. While new, disease-modifying therapies are now emerging, for the most devastating disorders, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, they still fall well short of offering a cure, and few drug design approaches fully exploit the wealth of mechanistic insights that has been obtained in biophysical studies. Here, I attempt to provide a new perspective on the role of protein aggregation in disease, by phrasing the problem in terms of a system that, under constant energy consumption, attempts to maintain a healthy, aggregate-free state against the thermodynamic driving forces that inexorably push it toward pathological aggregation.

Benzophenone-3 (BP-3) is a commonly used ultraviolet absorber that has the potential to accumulate in organisms, leading to toxicity. Benzophenone-8 (BP-8) is one of the major metabolites of BP-3. In this study, zebrafish were exposed to different concentrations of BP-3 and BP-8 (1 μg/L, 30 μg/L, and 300 μg/L) to investigate their accumulation and toxic effects in various tissues, including zebrafish brain, gut, and liver. The analysis focused on neurotoxicity, oxidative damage, inflammation, and gene expressions. The results showed that both BP-3 and BP-8 accumulated in the tissues, with the highest concentration observed in the gut, followed by the liver and brain. BP-8 exhibited a stronger ability to accumulate. In the brain, exposure to 1 μg/L of BP-3 and BP-8 promoted cortisol production, while higher exposures (30 μg/L and 300 μg/L) inhibited acetylcholinesterase activity and suppressed cortisol production. In the gut, both BP-3 and BP-8 exposures disrupted oxidative stress, inflammatory immunity, and apoptosis functions. In the liver, BP-3 and BP-8 affected hepatic metabolism, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and inflammatory immunity. Comparing gene expression in the brain, gut, and liver, it was found that BP-3 and BP-8 had a lower effect on gene expression in the brain, while the effect on the gut and liver was significantly higher. BP-8 generally had a higher effect than BP-3, which aligns with the observed accumulation pattern. These findings provide valuable insights for the risk assessment of BP-3 and BP-8 in the aquatic environment.

Exposure to both antibiotics and temperature changes can induce similar physiological responses in bacteria. Thus, changes in growth temperature may affect antibiotic resistance. Previous studies have found that evolution under antibiotic stress causes shifts in the optimal growth temperature of bacteria. However, little is known about how evolution under thermal stress affects antibiotic resistance. We examined 100+ heat-evolved strains of Escherichia coli that evolved under thermal stress. We asked whether evolution under thermal stress affects optimal growth temperature, if there are any correlations between evolving in high temperatures and antibiotic resistance, and if these strains' antibiotic efficacy changes depending on the local environment's temperature. We found that: (1) surprisingly, most of the heat-evolved strains displayed a decrease in optimal growth temperature and overall growth relative to the ancestor strain, (2) there were complex patterns of changes in antibiotic resistance when comparing the heat-evolved strains to the ancestor strain, and (3) there were few significant correlations among changes in antibiotic resistance, optimal growth temperature, and overall growth.

Molecular chaperones are critical for protein homeostasis and are implicated in several human pathologies such as neurodegeneration and cancer. While the binding of chaperones to nascent and misfolded proteins has been studied in great detail, the direct interaction between chaperones and RNA has not been systematically investigated. Here, we provide the evidence for widespread interaction between chaperones and RNA in human cells. We show that the major chaperone heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) binds to non-coding RNA transcribed by RNA polymerase III (RNA Pol III) such as tRNA and 5S rRNA. Global chromatin profiling revealed that HSP70 binds genomic sites of transcription by RNA Pol III. Detailed biochemical analyses showed that HSP70 alleviates the inhibitory effect of cognate tRNA transcript on tRNA gene transcription. Thus, our study uncovers an unexpected role of HSP70-RNA interaction in the biogenesis of a specific class of non-coding RNA with wider implications in cancer therapeutics.

Misfolded proteins are usually refolded to their functional conformations or degraded by quality control mechanisms. When misfolded proteins evade quality control, they can be sequestered to specific sites within cells to prevent the potential dysfunction and toxicity that arises from protein aggregation. Btn2 and Hsp42 are compartment-specific sequestrases that play key roles in the assembly of these deposition sites. Their exact intracellular functions and substrates are not well defined, particularly since heat stress sensitivity is not observed in deletion mutants. We show here that Btn2 and Hsp42 are required for tolerance to oxidative stress conditions induced by exposure to hydrogen peroxide. Btn2 and Hsp42 act to sequester oxidized proteins into defined PQC sites following ROS exposure and their absence leads to an accumulation of protein aggregates. The toxicity of protein aggregate accumulation causes oxidant sensitivity in btn2 hsp42 sequestrase mutants since overexpression of the Hsp104 disaggregase rescues oxidant tolerance. We have identified the Sup35 translation termination factor as an in vivo sequestrase substrate and show that Btn2 and Hsp42 act to suppress oxidant-induced formation of the yeast [PSI+] prion, which is the amyloid form of Sup35. [PSI+] prion formation in sequestrase mutants does not require IPOD (insoluble protein deposit) localization which is the site where amyloids are thought to undergo fragmentation and seeding to propagate their heritable prion form. Instead, both amorphous and amyloid Sup35 aggregates are increased in btn2 hsp42 mutants consistent with the idea that prion formation occurs at multiple intracellular sites during oxidative stress conditions in the absence of sequestrase activity. Taken together, our data identify protein sequestration as a key antioxidant defence mechanism that functions to mitigate the damaging consequences of protein oxidation-induced aggregation.

Insects are susceptible to elevated temperatures, resulting in impaired fertility, and shortened lifespan. This study investigated the genetic mechanisms underlying heat stress effects. We conducted RNA sequencing on Pteromalus puparum exposed to 25°C and 35°C, revealing transcriptional signatures. Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis uncovered heat stress-associated modules, forming a regulatory network of 113 genes. The network is naturally divided into two subgroups, one linked to acute heat stress, including heat shock proteins (HSPs), and the other to chronic heat stress, involving lipogenesis genes. We identified an Xap5 Heat Shock Regulator (XHSR) gene as a crucial network component, validated through RNA interference and quantitative PCR assays. XHSR knockdown reduced wasps' lifespan while directly inducing HSPs and mediating lipogenesis gene induction. CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout of the Drosophila XHSR homolog reduced mutants' survival, highlighting its conserved role. This research sheds light on thermal tolerance mechanisms, offering potential applications in pest control amid global warming.

Hsp70 (70 kDa heat shock protein) performs molecular chaperone functions by assisting the folding of newly synthesized and misfolded proteins, thereby counteracting various cell stresses and preventing multiple diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders and cancers. It is well established that, immediately after heat shock, Hsp70 gene expression is mediated by a canonical mechanism of cap-dependent translation. However, the molecular mechanism of Hsp70 expression during heat shock remains elusive. Intriguingly, the 5' end of Hsp70 messenger RNA (mRNA) appears to form a compact structure with the potential to regulate protein expression in a cap-independent manner. Here, we determined the minimal length of the mHsp70 5'-terminal mRNA sequence that is required for RNA folding into a highly compact structure. This span of this RNA element was mapped and the secondary structure characterized by chemical probing, resulting in a secondary structural model that includes multiple stable stems, including one containing the canonical start codon. All of these components, including a short stretch of the 5' open reading frame (ORF), were shown to be vital for RNA folding. This work provides a structural basis for future investigations on the role of translational regulatory structures in the 5' untranslated region and ORF sequences of Hsp70 during heat shock.

Heat stress impacts plant growth at all phases of development, although the particular threshold for heat tolerance varies significantly across different developmental stages. During seed germination, elevated temperatures can either impede or completely halt the process, contingent upon the plant type and the severity of the stress. During advanced stages, high temperatures can have a negative impact on photosynthesis, respiration, water balance, and membrane integrity. Additionally, they can also influence the levels of hormones and primary and secondary metabolites. In addition, during the growth and development of plants, there is an increased expression of various heat shock proteins, as well as other proteins related to stress, and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). These are significant plant responses to heat stress. Plants employ several strategies to deal with heat stress, such as maintaining the stability of their cell membranes, removing harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS), producing antioxidants, accumulating and adjusting compatible solutes, activating mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and calcium-dependent protein kinase (CDPK) cascades, and, crucially, signaling through chaperones and activating transcription. These molecular-level systems boost the ability of plants to flourish in heat stress. Potential genetic methods to enhance plant heat stress resistance encompass old and modern molecular breeding techniques and transgenic approaches, all of which rely on a comprehensive comprehension of these systems. Although several plants exhibit enhanced heat tolerance through traditional breeding methods, the effectiveness of genetic transformation techniques has been somewhat restricted. The latter results from the current constraints in our understanding and access to genes that have known impacts on plant heat stress tolerance. However, these challenges may be overcome in the future. Besides genetic methods, crops' heat tolerance can be improved through the pre-treatment of plants with various environmental challenges or the external application of osmoprotectants such as glycine betaine and proline. Thermotolerance is achieved through an active process in which plants allocate significant energy to maintain their structure and function to avoid damage induced by heat stress. The practice of nanoparticles has been shown to upgrade both the standard and the quantity of produce when crops are under heat stress. This review provides information on the effects of heat stress on plants and explores the importance of nanoparticles, transgenics, and genomic techniques in reducing the negative consequences of heat stress. Furthermore, it explores how plants might adapt to heat stress by modifying their biochemical, physiological, and molecular reactions.

Using the halotolerant green microalgae Dunaliella salina as a model organism has special merits, such as a wide range of salt tolerance, unicellular organism, and simple life cycle and growth conditions. These unique characteristics make it suitable for salt stress study. In order to provide an overview of the response of Dunaliella salina to salt stress and hopefully to reveal evolutionarily conserved mechanisms of photosynthetic organisms in response to salt stress, the transcriptomes and the genome of the algae were sequenced by the second and the third-generation sequencing technologies, then the transcriptomes under salt stress were compared to the transcriptomes under non-salt stress with the newly sequenced genome as the reference genome. The major cellular biological processes that being regulated in response to salt stress, include transcription, protein synthesis, protein degradation, protein folding, protein modification, protein transport, cellular component organization, cell redox homeostasis, DNA repair, glycerol synthesis, energy metabolism, lipid metabolism, and ion homeostasis. This study gives a comprehensive overview of how Dunaliella salina responses to salt stress at transcriptomic level, especially characterized by the nearly ubiquitous up-regulation of the genes involving in protein folding, DNA repair, and cell redox homeostasis, which may confer the algae important mechanisms to survive under salt stress. The three fundamental biological processes, which face huge challenges under salt stress, are ignored by most scientists and are worth further deep study to provide useful information for breeding economic important plants competent in tolerating salt stress, other than only depending on the commonly acknowledged osmotic balance and ion homeostasis.

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is one of the world's most widely used polyester plastics. Due to its chemical stability, PET is extremely difficult to hydrolyze in a natural environment. Recent discoveries in new polyester hydrolases and breakthroughs in enzyme engineering strategies have inspired enormous research on biorecycling of PET. This study summarizes our research efforts toward large-scale, efficient, and economical biodegradation of post-consumer waste PET, including PET hydrolase selection and optimization, high-yield enzyme production, and high-capacity enzymatic degradation of post-consumer waste PET. First, genes encoding PETase and MHETase from Ideonella sakaiensis and the ICCG variant of leaf-branch compost cutinase (LCCICCG ) were codon-optimized and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) for high-yield production. To further lower the enzyme production cost, a pelB leader sequence was fused to LCCICCG so that the enzyme can be secreted into the medium to facilitate recovery. To help bind the enzyme on the hydrophobic surface of PET, a substrate-binding module in a polyhydroxyalkanoate depolymerase from Alcaligenes faecalis (PBM) was fused to the C-terminus of LCCICCG . The resulting four different LCCICCG variants (LCC, PelB-LCC, LCC-PBM, and PelB-LCC-PBM), together with PETase and MHETase, were compared for PET degradation efficiency. A fed-batch fermentation process was developed to produce the target enzymes up to 1.2 g L-1 . Finally, the best enzyme, PelB-LCC, was selected and used for the efficient degradation of 200 g L-1 recycled PET in a well-controlled, stirred-tank reactor. The results will help develop an economical and scalable biorecycling process toward a circular PET economy.

Increasing evidence suggests that elevated intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a significant role in the pathogenesis of many diseases. Increased intracellular levels of ROS can lead to the oxidation of lipids, DNA, and proteins, contributing to cellular damage. Hence, the maintenance of redox hemostasis is essential. Naringenin (NAR) is a flavonoid included in the flavanones subcategory. Various pharmacological actions have been ascribable to this phytochemical composition, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antitumor, antiadipogenic, neuro-, and cardio-protective activities. This review focused on the underlying mechanism responsible for the antioxidative stress properties of NAR and its' nanoformulations. Several lines of in vitro and in vivo investigations suggest the effects of NAR and its nanoformulation on their target cells via modulating signaling pathways. These nanoformulations include nanoemulsion, nanocarriers, solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN), and nanomicelle. This review also highlights several beneficial health effects of NAR nanoformulations on human diseases including brain disorders, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and small intestine injuries. Employing nanoformulation can improve the pharmacokinetic properties of NAR and consequently efficiency by reducing its limitations, such as low bioavailability. The protective effects of NAR and its' nanoformulations against oxidative stress may be linked to the modulation of Nrf2-heme oxygenase-1, NO/cGMP/potassium channel, COX-2, NF-κB, AMPK/SIRT3, PI3K/Akt/mTOR, BDNF, NOX, and LOX-1 pathways. Understanding the mechanism behind the protective effects of NAR can facilitate drug development for the treatment of oxidative stress-related disorders.

SUMOylation as one of the protein post-translational modifications plays crucial roles in multiple biological processes of eukaryotic organisms. Botrytis cinerea is a devastating fungal pathogen and capable of infecting plant hosts at low temperature. However, the molecular mechanisms of low-temperature adaptation are largely unknown in fungi. Combining with biochemical methods and biological analyses, we report that SUMOylation regulates pathogen survival at low temperature and oxidative DNA damage response during infection in B. cinerea. The heat shock protein (Hsp70) BcSsb and E3 ubiquitin ligase BcRad18 were identified as substrates of SUMOylation; moreover, their SUMOylation both requires a single unique SUMO-interacting motif (SIM). SUMOylated BcSsb regulates β-tubulin accumulation, thereby affecting the stability of microtubules and consequently mycelial growth at low temperature. On the contrary, SUMOylated BcRad18 modulates mono-ubiquitination of the sliding clamp protein proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), which is involved in response to oxidative DNA damage during infection. Our study uncovers the molecular mechanisms of SUMOylation-mediated low-temperature survival and oxidative DNA damage tolerance during infection in a devastating fungal pathogen, which provides novel insights into low-temperature adaptation and pathogenesis for postharvest pathogens as well as new targets for inhibitor invention in disease control.

Heat shock proteins are highly conserved proteins that work as molecular chaperones expressed in response to thermal stress. This study aimed to determine the expression profile of genes related to the heat stress response in whole blood obtained from the Romosinuano creole breed.

Real-time polymerase chain reaction was performed to analyze the transcript of hsp90, hsp70, hsp60, and hsf1 in the whole blood of Romosinuano under different temperature-humidity indices (THIs).

The expression levels of the hsp70 and hsf1 genes at the high-THI level were higher (p = 0.0011 and p = 0.0003, respectively) than those at the low-THI level. In addition, no differences in the expression levels of the hsp60 and hsP90 genes were detected between the two THIs.

The overexpression of hsf1 and hsp70 genes play an important role in protecting cells from damage induced by heat stress.

Yarrowia lipolytica has been widely used in the food biotech-related industry, where it plays the host's role in producing erythritol. Nevertheless, a temperature of about 28°C-30°C has been estimated as the yeast's optimal growth temperature, leading to the consumption of a considerable quantity of cooling water, especially in summer, which is obligatory for fermentation. Herein is described a method for improving the thermotolerance and erythritol production efficiency at high temperatures of Y. lipolytica. Through screening and testing different heat resistant devices, eight refactored engineered strains showed better growth at higher temperature and the antioxidant properties of the eight engineered strains were also improved. In addition, the erythritol titer, yield and productivity of the strain FOS11-Ctt1 represented the best among the eight strains, reaching at 39.25 g/L, 0.348 g/g glucose, and 0.55 g/L/h respectively, which were increased by 156%, 86% and 161% compared with the control strain, respectively. This study provides insight into an effective heat-resistant device that could enhance the thermotolerance and erythritol production of Y. lipolytica, which might be considered a valued scientific reference for other resistant strains' construction.

Prions are self-propagating, misfolded forms of proteins associated with various neurodegenerative diseases in mammals and heritable traits in yeast. How prions form spontaneously into infectious amyloid-like structures without underlying genetic changes is poorly understood. Previous studies have suggested that methionine oxidation may underlie the switch from a soluble protein to the prion form. In this current study, we have examined the role of methionine sulfoxide reductases (MXRs) in protecting against de novo formation of the yeast [PSI⁺] prion, which is the amyloid form of the Sup35 translation termination factor. We show that [PSI⁺] formation is increased during normal and oxidative stress conditions in mutants lacking either one of the yeast MXRs (Mxr1, Mxr2), which protect against methionine oxidation by reducing the two epimers of methionine-S-sulfoxide. We have identified a methionine residue (Met124) in Sup35 that is important for prion formation, confirming that direct Sup35 oxidation causes [PSI⁺] prion formation. [PSI⁺] formation was less pronounced in mutants simultaneously lacking both MXR isoenzymes, and we show that the morphology and biophysical properties of protein aggregates are altered in this mutant. Taken together, our data indicate that methionine oxidation triggers spontaneous [PSI⁺] prion formation, which can be alleviated by methionine sulfoxide reductases.

Circulating Hsp70 levels were determined in feline and porcine cohorts using two different ELISA systems. These comparative animal models of larger organisms often reflect diseases, and especially malignant tumors, better than conventional rodent models. It is therefore essential to investigate the biology and utility of tumor biomarkers in animals such as cats and pigs. In this study, levels of free Hsp70 in the blood of cats with spontaneously occurring tumors were detected using a commercial Hsp70 ELISA (R&D Systems). Sub-analysis of different tumor groups revealed that animals with tumors of epithelial origin presented with significantly elevated circulating Hsp70 concentrations. In addition to free Hsp70 levels measured with the R&D Systems Hsp70 ELISA, levels of exosomal Hsp70 were determined using the compHsp70 ELISA in pigs. Both ELISA systems detected significantly elevated Hsp70 levels (R&D Systems: median 24.9 ng/mL; compHsp70: median 44.2 ng/mL) in the blood of a cohort of APC1311/+ pigs diagnosed with high-grade adenoma polyps, and the R&D Systems Hsp70 ELISA detected also elevated Hsp70 levels in animals with low-grade polyps. In contrast, in flTP53R167H pigs, suffering from malignant osteosarcoma, the compHsp70 ELISA (median 674.32 ng/mL), but not the R&D Systems Hsp70 ELISA (median 4.78 ng/mL), determined significantly elevated Hsp70 concentrations, indicating that in tumor-bearing animals, the dominant form of Hsp70 is of exosomal origin. Our data suggest that both ELISA systems are suitable for detecting free circulating Hsp70 levels in pigs with high-grade adenoma, but only the compHsp70 ELISA can measure elevated, tumor-derived exosomal Hsp70 levels in tumor-bearing animals.

There are many artificial sources of radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) in the environment, with a value between 100 MHz and 6 GHz. The most frequently used signal is with a frequency of around 900 MHz. The direction of these changes positively impacts the quality of life, enabling easy communication from almost anywhere in the world. All living organisms in the world feel the effects of the electromagnetic field on them. The observations regarding the influence of a RF-EMF on honey bees, describing the general impact of RF-EMF on the colony and/or behavior of individual bees, such as reduction in the number of individuals in colonies, extended homing flight duration, decrease in breeding efficiency, changes in flight direction (movement of bees toward the areas affected by RF-EMF), increase in the intensity and frequency of sounds characteristic for those announcing the impending danger. In this work, we describe the changes in the levels of some of the stress-related markers in honey bees exposed to varying intensities and duration of RF-EMF. One-day-old honeybee worker bees were used for the study. The bees were randomly assigned to 9 experimental groups which were exposed to the following 900 MHz EMF intensities: 12 V/m, 28 V/m, and 61 V/m for 15 min, 1 h and 3 h. The control group was not exposed to the RF-EMF. Each experimental group consisted of 10 cages in which were 100 bees. Then, hemolymph was collected from the bees, in which the activity was assessed AST, ALT, ALP, GGTP, and level of nonenzymatic antioxidants albumin, creatinine, uric acid, and urea. Bees were also collected for the analysis of rps5, ppo, hsp10, hsp70, hsp90, and vitellogenin gene expression. Our study shows that exposure to a 900 MHz electromagnetic field induces a response in the honey bees that can be detected in the level of enzyme activity and the expression of stress-related genes. The response is similar to the one previously described as a result of exposition to UVB irradiation and most likely cannot be attributed to increased temperature.
