Abstract
The pineal gland secretes melatonin, which regulates various physiological processes; damage to this gland disrupts these functions. This study aimed to investigate the effect of nonylphenol on the pineal gland and the pituitary-adrenal axis, which is associated with this system. The study was initiated using Wistar albino male rats on their postnatal 21st day, a critical developmental stage for endocrine regulation. Nonylphenol was administered via oral gavage at doses of 5, 25 and 125 mg/kg/day, while bisphenol-A was given at 50 mg/kg/day as a positive control. At the end of the treatment period, liver, kidney, pituitary, pineal and adrenal tissues were examined histopathologically. Hormone levels were analysed in serum samples. Significant changes in adrenocorticotropic hormone, melatonin and aldosterone levels were detected in hormone analyses. In contrast, no differences in corticosterone and glucose levels were detected. Histopathological findings showed structural changes in tissues. The effects of nonylphenol on the pituitary-adrenal axis and melatonin vary depending on the experimental protocols employed. However, it is clear that nonylphenol and bisphenol A have negative effects on the pituitary-adrenal axis, pineal gland, liver and kidney. In conclusion, future research should focus on elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying these effects and developing environmentally friendly strategies to eliminate nonylphenol and bisphenol-A contamination.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that thyroid malignancies can alter the transcriptional oscillations of circadian clock genes. In this study, we screened the expression of core circadian clock genes in thyroid neoplasms and found that CSNK1E, NPAS2, and TIMELESS were upregulated, while ARNTL, CRY1, CRY2, PER2, and RORA were downregulated during the progression and dedifferentiation of thyroid cancer. Immunohistochemical analysis further confirmed an increase in CSNK1E expression parallel to the loss of tumor differentiation. To investigate the potential therapeutic implications, we treated thyroid cancer cell lines with two different CSNK1E inhibitors: PF670462 and IC261. Both inhibitors resulted in growth inhibition in monolayer and three-dimensional spheroid cultures. This growth inhibition was accompanied by G2/M cell cycle arrest and a decrease in CDK4 and cyclin D1 expression. Moreover, CSNK1E inhibitors suppressed cell migration and invasion and reduced the expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition markers. In vivo experiments using xenograft models showed that the administration of IC261 significantly restrained tumor growth and decreased the Ki-67 index of the xenograft tumors. In conclusion, our study provides evidence of aberrant CSNK1E expression in thyroid cancer dedifferentiation and highlights the potential therapeutic value of targeting CSNK1E.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Shift work is associated with an increased risk of liver injury. However, whether and how shift work alters liver function remains unclear. AIMS This study aimed to investigate the associations between shift work and the liver function parameters, and further explore the mediating roles of thyroid function indicators. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study involving a convenience sample of 724 subway workers. Multivariate linear regression models were adopted to approximate the effect values for the associations of shift work with liver function parameters and thyroid function indicators. Mediation analyses were used to explore the roles of thyroid function indicators in the association between shift work and liver function parameters. RESULTS Shift work was associated with increased levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total triiodothyronine (TT3) and free thyroxine (FT4) (β = 6.309, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.739-9.879, β = 0.328, 95% CI 0.242-0.415 and β = 2.913, 95% CI 1.502-2.884, respectively). In stratification analysis, the positive association between shift work and TT3, FT3 and FT4 was more pronounced among people >30 years old. The increase in shift worker FT3 and aspartate transaminase levels was stronger among alcohol users. Mediation analysis showed that TT3 and FT4 mediated 39% and 29% of the associations between shift work and the increased level of ALP, respectively (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that shift work is associated with increased ALP levels of subway workers, which is partly mediated by the increase of TT3 and FT4 levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence on the influence of outdoor artificial light at night (ALAN) on hypothyroidism in pregnant women is scarce. We aimed to investigate the association between outdoor ALAN exposure and hypothyroidism in pregnancy. METHODS 81,820 pregnant women from the China Birth Cohort Study (CBCS) were analyzed, which recruited from 18 provinces and autonomous regions in China between February 2018 and December 2020. Hypothyroidism was defined based on clinical diagnosis by physicians. Outdoor ALAN exposure (nW/cm2/sr) within 1500 m was estimated using VIIRS/DNB satellite data based on the participants' residential address. The Outdoor ALAN was divided in quartiles, with the lowest quartile (Q1) serving as the reference group. Generalized linear mixed models were employed to estimate the association between ALAN exposure and hypothyroidism. RESULTS Among the 81,120 pregnant women, 3902 (4.77 %) were diagnosed hypothyroidism. Pregnant women with hypothyroidism had significantly higher median (IQR, interquartile range) outdoor ALAN levels during pregnancy compared to those without hypothyroidism (30.97 (18.15) vs. 29.14 (20.21) nW/cm2/sr, p < 0.01). After adjusting for covariates, we found that each quartile increment of outdoor ALAN exposure was associated with an adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR of 1.15 (95 % Confidence Interval [95 % CI]: 1.03-1.27), 1.15 (1.05-1.28), and 1.12 (1.00-1.25) for hypothyroidism, respectively from Q2 to Q4. Additionally, stratified analyses revealed that pre-pregnancy BMI was a significant modifier in the association between outdoor ALAN and hypothyroidism in pregnancy, with stronger effects observed among those who were overweight before pregnancy (1.21 [95 % CI, 1.05-1.39] vs. 1.03 [95 % CI, 0.97-1.10], p for interaction = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Outdoor ALAN exposure is positively associated with hypothyroidism in pregnancy. To benefit maternal and infant health and well-being, recommendations for mitigating ALAN pollution and effective measures to avoid excessive light exposure should be developed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Air pollution and outdoor light at night (LAN) have been reported to be related to type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, their interaction with risk of T2D remains uncertain. Therefore, our study aimed to explore the relationship between outdoor LAN, air pollution and incident T2D. METHODS Our study included a cohort of 24,147 subjects recruited from 2015 to 2018 in Ningbo, China. Land use regression models were used to evaluate particulate matter with a diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5), ≤10 μm (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Satellite images data with a spatial resolution of 500m was used to estimate outdoor LAN levels. T2D new cases were identified by medical records based on health information system. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Moreover, we investigated the multiplicative and additive interactions between air pollution and outdoor LAN. RESULTS During 108,908 person-years of follow-up period, 1016 T2D incident cases were identified. The HRs (95% CIs) were 1.22 (1.15, 1.30) for outdoor LAN, 1.20 (1.00, 1.45) for PM2.5, 1.23 (1.11, 1.35) for PM10 and 1.19 (1.04, 1.37) for NO2 in every interquartile range increase, respectively. Furthermore, significant interactions were observed between outdoor LAN and NO2. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicated that air pollution and outdoor LAN were positively associated with T2D. Moreover, we observed an interaction between outdoor LAN and NO2 suggesting that stronger associations for outdoor LAN and T2D in areas with higher levels of NO2, and for NO2 and T2D in areas with higher levels of outdoor LAN.

Abstract
Exposure to artificial light-at-night (ALAN) has been linked to cancer risk. Few meta-analyses on this topic have reviewed only breast cancer. This study aimed to systematically review and meta-analyze existing studies on ALAN exposure and cancer incidence, thoroughly evaluating exposure assessment quality. We considered observational studies (cohort, case-control, cross-sectional) on ALAN exposure (indoor and outdoor) and cancer incidence, measured by relative risk, hazard ratio, and odds ratio. We searched six databases, two registries, and Google Scholar from inception until April 17, 2024. Quality of studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tools. Random-effects meta-analysis was used to estimate relative risks (RR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) for ALAN exposures. We identified 9835 studies and included 28 for qualitative synthesis with 2,508,807 individuals (15 cohort, 13 case-control). Out of the included studies, 20 studies on breast cancer (731,493 individuals) and 2 studies on prostate cancer (53,254 individuals) were used for quantitative synthesis. Higher levels of outdoor ALAN were associated with breast cancer risk (meta-estimate = 1.12, 95 % CI 1.03-1.23 (I2 = 69 %)). We observed a non-significant positive association between indoor ALAN levels and breast cancer risk (meta-estimate = 1.07, 0.95-1.21, I2 = 60 %), and no differences by menopausal status. The meta-analysis for prostate cancer suggested a non-statistically significant increased risk for higher levels of outdoor ALAN (meta-estimate = 1.43, 0.75-2.72, I2 = 90 %). In the qualitative synthesis, we observed positive associations with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and colorectal, pancreatic and thyroid cancer. We found an association between outdoor ALAN and breast cancer risk. However, most studies relied on satellite-images with a very low resolution (1 to 5 km, from the Defense Meteorological Program [DMSP]) and without information on color of light. Future studies with better exposure assessment should focus on investigating other cancer sites.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The TNFRSF9 molecule is pivotal in thyroid carcinoma (THCA) development. This study utilizes Pathomics techniques to predict TNFRSF9 expression in THCA tissue and explore its molecular mechanisms. METHODS Transcriptome data, pathology images, and clinical information from the cancer genome atlas (TCGA) were analyzed. Image segmentation and feature extraction were performed using the OTSU's algorithm and pyradiomics package. The dataset was split for training and validation. Features were selected using maximum relevance minimum redundancy recursive feature elimination (mRMR_RFE) and modeling conducted with the gradient boosting machine (GBM) algorithm. Model evaluation included receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis. The Pathomics model output a probabilistic pathomics score (PS) for gene expression prediction, with its prognostic value assessed in TNFRSF9 expression groups. Subsequent analysis involved gene set variation analysis (GSVA), immune gene expression, cell abundance, immunotherapy susceptibility, and gene mutation analysis. RESULTS High TNFRSF9 expression correlated with worsened progression-free interval (PFI) and acted as an independent risk factor [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.178, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.045-4.538, P = 0.038]. Nine pathohistological features were identified. The GBM Pathomics model demonstrated good prediction efficacy [area under the curve (AUC) 0.819 and 0.769] and clinical benefits. High PS was a PFI risk factor (HR = 2.156, 95% CI 1.047-4.440, P = 0.037). Patients with high PS potentially exhibited enriched pathways, increased TIGIT gene expression, Tregs infiltration (P < 0.0001), and higher rates of gene mutations (BRAF, TTN, TG). CONCLUSIONS The GBM Pathomics model constructed based on the pathohistological features of H&E-stained sections well predicted the expression level of TNFRSF9 molecules in THCA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emerging interest surrounds the role of environmental factors, notably exposure to light at night (LAN), as a potential cause of cancer. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review and, if possible, meta-analysis of observational studies on LAN and cancer risk of multiple types. METHODS A systematic literature search in PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase, spanning from inception to May 2023, was conducted. Studies focusing on the association between LAN exposure and cancer risk in adult populations were included. We used random effects models to calculate pooled risk estimates (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). We assessed study quality using the Risk of Bias in Non-randomized Studies of Interventions. RESULTS Among 8492 initially identified studies, 26 met the inclusion criteria (13 were case-control and 13 were cohort studies). These studies were published from 2001 to 2023 and assessed diverse cancer types in North America, Asia, Europe, and Australia. Except for breast cancer, there was a paucity of site-specific cancer studies. In the meta-analysis of 19 breast cancer studies, higher exposure to indoor (summary RR, 1.08; 95% CI 1.01-1.15) and outdoor (summary RR, 1.10; 95% CI, 1.04-1.15) LAN were associated with increased risk. After excluding one low-quality study, the results were unchanged. CONCLUSIONS We found a positive association between LAN exposure and breast cancer risk in women. However, data are lacking for other cancer types, and further studies are required to better understand the role of LAN on cancer.

Abstract
This review delved into the intricate relationship between circadian clocks and physiological processes, emphasizing their critical role in maintaining homeostasis. Orchestrated by interlocked clock genes, the circadian timekeeping system regulates fundamental processes like the sleep-wake cycle, energy metabolism, immune function, and cell proliferation. The central oscillator in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus synchronizes with light-dark cycles, while peripheral tissue clocks are influenced by cues such as feeding times. Circadian disruption, linked to modern lifestyle factors like night shift work, correlates with adverse health outcomes, including metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases, infections, and cancer. We explored the molecular mechanisms of circadian clock genes and their impact on metabolic disorders and cancer pathogenesis. Specific associations between circadian disruption and endocrine tumors, spanning breast, ovarian, testicular, prostate, thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal gland cancers, are highlighted. Shift work is associated with increased breast cancer risk, with PER genes influencing tumor progression and drug resistance. CLOCK gene expression correlates with cisplatin resistance in ovarian cancer, while factors like aging and intermittent fasting affect prostate cancer. Our review underscored the intricate interplay between circadian rhythms and cancer, involving the regulation of the cell cycle, DNA repair, metabolism, immune function, and the tumor microenvironment. We advocated for integrating biological timing into clinical considerations for personalized healthcare, proposing that understanding these connections could lead to novel therapeutic approaches. Evidence supports circadian rhythm-focused therapies, particularly chronotherapy, for treating endocrine tumors. Our review called for further research to uncover detailed connections between circadian clocks and cancer, providing essential insights for targeted treatments. We emphasized the importance of public health interventions to mitigate lifestyle-related circadian disruptions and underscored the critical role of circadian rhythms in disease mechanisms and therapeutic interventions.

Abstract
Melatonin, primarily synthesized in the pineal gland, plays a crucial role in regulating circadian rhythms and possesses significant antioxidative properties. By neutralizing free radicals and reducing oxidative stress, melatonin emerges as a promising agent for the prevention and therapy of many different disorders, including cancer. This paper reviews the relationship between the thyroid gland and melatonin, presenting experimental evidence on the protective effects of this indoleamine against oxidative damage to macromolecules in thyroid tissue caused by documented carcinogens (as classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, IARC) or caused by potential carcinogens. Furthermore, the possible influence on cancer therapy in humans and the overall well-being of cancer patients are discussed. The article highlights melatonin's essential role in maintaining thyroid health and its contribution to management strategies in patients with thyroid cancer and other thyroid diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The occurrence of thyroid cancer (TC) has increased in recent decades. Exposure to outdoor artificial light at night (ALN) is associated with an increased risk of cancer. AIM To investigated the impact of ALN, as a significant environmental pollutant, on TC incidence worldwide. METHODS The assessment involved analyzing satellite ALN data in conjunction with TC incidence data [adjusted standardized rate (ASR)], while considering the quality of cancer registries (QCR), gross domestic product (GDP) per person, and health expenditure per person (HEP) for each country. RESULTS Results indicated a correlation between higher ASR and ALN exposure percentages, particularly in countries with higher GDP or HEP quartiles (all P< 0.05). Significant differences in ASR were observed across QCR levels, both high and low quality (all P < 0.05), but not in countries without registry activity. However, when evaluating ASR against ALN exposure percentages while considering GDP/HEP quartiles or QCR levels, no significant associations were found (all P > 0.10). CONCLUSION The findings suggest a potential link between higher GDP and adverse health conditions, serving as possible risk factors for TC, rather than a direct association with ALN. Limitations include the use of cross-sectional data, temporal misalignment, and reliance on ALN as a socioeconomic proxy. It is proposed that light pollution might be connected to a lifestyle conducive to carcinogenesis. Additionally, the presence of higher GDP/HEP could enhance access to diagnostic resources, potentially facilitating TC diagnosis and inclusion in cancer registries.

Abstract
Previous studies have indicated depression was associated with environmental exposures, but evidence is limited for the association between outdoor light at night (LAN) and depression. This study aims to examine the association between long-term outdoor LAN exposure and depressive symptoms using data from the Chinese Veteran Clinical Research platform. A total of 6445 male veterans were selected from 277 veteran communities in 18 cities of China during 2009‒2011. Depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Chinese version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale. Outdoor LAN was estimated using the Global Radiance Calibrated Nighttime Lights data. The odds ratio and 95% confidence intervals of depressive symptoms at the high level of outdoor LAN exposure against the low level during the 1 years before the investigation was 1.49 (1.15, 1.92) with p-value for trend < 0.01, and those associated with per interquartile range increase in LAN exposure was 1.22 (1.06, 1.40).

Abstract
Circadian rhythms are evolutionarily programmed biological rhythms that are primarily entrained by the light cycle. Disruption of circadian rhythms is an important risk factor for several metabolic disorders. Photoperiod is defined as total duration of light exposure in a day. With the extended use of indoor/outdoor light, smartphones, television, computers, and social jetlag people are exposed to excessive artificial light at night increasing their photoperiod. Importantly long photoperiod is not limited to any geographical region, season, age, or socioeconomic group, it is pervasive. Long photoperiod is an established disrupter of the circadian rhythm and can induce a range of chronic health conditions including adiposity, altered hormonal signaling and metabolism, premature ageing, and poor psychological health. This review discusses the impact of exposure to long photoperiod on circadian rhythms, metabolic and mental health, hormonal signaling, and ageing and provides a perspective on possible preventive and therapeutic approaches for this pervasive challenge.

Abstract
Light at night (LAN) is a significant but underappreciated risk factor contributing to cardiometabolic disease (CMD). We therefore conducted the review examining the relationship of LAN exposure with CMD in order to investigate the effects of LAN exposure on CMD. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Scopus for eligible studies published from database inception to August 17, 2023. The pooled effect size was calculated using random-effects models. Heterogeneity among the studies was quantified by Cochran's Q test and I2 statistic. A total of 1,019,739 participants from 14 studies (5 cohort studies and 9 cross-sectional) were included. Among the 14 eligible studies, 9 on obesity, 4 on diabetes, 2 on hypertension, 1 on dyslipidemia, and 1 on coronary heart disease. Exposure to higher levels of LAN were associated with 21% higher risk of CMD (Summary risk ratio, SRR: 1.21, 95% CI = 1.16-1.27), accompanied by substantial heterogeneity (I2 = 61%; tau2 = 0.004; Cochran's Q = 41.02). Specifically, individuals in the highest category of LAN exposure exhibited 23% higher risk of obesity (SRR: 1.23, 95% CI = 1.14-1.32), 46% higher risk of diabetes (SRR: 1.46, 95% CI = 1.05-2.03) and 21% higher risk of other CMDs (SRR: 1.21, 95% CI = 1.10-1.34). Subgroup analyses revealed that the pooled-effect size of LAN and CMD was higher for indoor LAN than outdoor LAN (indoor LAN: SRR = 1.36; outdoor LAN: SRR = 1.17, P = 0.03). The overall quality was rated as moderate using GRADE guideline. Our study strengthens the evidence on the increase in CMD risk due to LAN exposure. Findings from this study have important implications for identifying modifiable risk factor of CMD, future prevention strategy development, and resource allocation for high-risk group.

Abstract
Abnormally short and long sleep are associated with premature mortality, and achieving optimal sleep duration has been the focus of sleep health guidelines. Emerging research demonstrates that sleep regularity, the day-to-day consistency of sleep-wake timing, can be a stronger predictor for some health outcomes than sleep duration. The role of sleep regularity in mortality, however, has not been investigated in a large cohort with objective data. We therefore aimed to compare how sleep regularity and duration predicted risk for all-cause and cause-specific mortality. We calculated Sleep Regularity Index (SRI) scores from > 10 million hours of accelerometer data in 60 977 UK Biobank participants (62.8 ± 7.8 years, 55.0% female, median[IQR] SRI: 81.0[73.8-86.3]). Mortality was reported up to 7.8 years after accelerometer recording in 1859 participants (4.84 deaths per 1000 person-years, mean (±SD) follow-up of 6.30 ± 0.83 years). Higher sleep regularity was associated with a 20%-48% lower risk of all-cause mortality (p < .001 to p = 0.004), a 16%-39% lower risk of cancer mortality (p < 0.001 to p = 0.017), and a 22%-57% lower risk of cardiometabolic mortality (p < 0.001 to p = 0.048), across the top four SRI quintiles compared to the least regular quintile. Results were adjusted for age, sex, ethnicity, and sociodemographic, lifestyle, and health factors. Sleep regularity was a stronger predictor of all-cause mortality than sleep duration, by comparing equivalent mortality models, and by comparing nested SRI-mortality models with and without sleep duration (p = 0.14-0.20). These findings indicate that sleep regularity is an important predictor of mortality risk and is a stronger predictor than sleep duration. Sleep regularity may be a simple, effective target for improving general health and survival.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiologic evidence on whether iron accumulation in brain modified the association between artificial light at night (ALAN) and incident mental disorders is lacking. The authors aims to investigate modification of brain iron deposition on the associations of ALAN with multiple mental disorders in the middle-aged and older adults. METHODS This prospective study used data from the UK Biobank. ALAN was drawn from satellite datasets. Susceptibility-weighted magnetic resonance imaging was used to ascertain iron content of each brain region. T2* signal loss was used as indices of iron deposition. The main outcomes are impacts of ALAN exposure on onset of wide spectrum of physician-diagnosed mental disorders, which was estimated by time-varying Cox proportional hazard model. The authors further conducted stratified analyses by levels of iron brain deposition to examine the potential modifying effects. RESULTS Among 298,283 participants followed for a median of 10.91 years, higher ALAN exposure was associated with increased risk of mental disorders. An IQR (11.37 nW/cm2/sr) increase in annual levels of ALAN was associated with an HR of 1.050 (95 % CI: 1.034,1.066) for any mental disorder, 1.076 (95 % CI: 1.053,1.099) for substance use disorder, and 1.036 (95 % CI: 1.004,1.069) for depression disorder in fully adjusted models. The exposure-response curves showed steeper trends at lower ALAN levels and a plateau at higher exposures. The associations were stronger in participants with high iron deposition in left hippocampus, left accumbens and left pallidum. CONCLUSIONS ALAN was associated with multiple mental disorders in the middle-aged and older adults, and the findings indicated stricter standards of ALAN is needed and targeted preventive measures are warranted, especially with high brain iron deposition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND More than 83% of the world's population lives under light-polluted skies while information about health effects of outdoor light at night (LAN) is limited. We examined the association of LAN with natural cause (NC) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality using the UK Biobank. METHODS We included 273 335 participants recruited between 2006 and 2010. Level of LAN was estimated at each participant's address using time-varying satellite data for a composite of persistent night-time illumination at ~1 km2 scale. Information on causes of death until 12 November 2021 was obtained through record linkage. Cox proportional hazards regression was used. RESULTS In the follow-up with an average of 12.4 years, 14 864 NC and 3100 CVD deaths were identified. Compared with the participants exposed to the first quartile of LAN, participants exposed to the highest quartile showed an 8% higher risk of NC mortality (HR: 1.08, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.13) after adjusting for age, sex, social-economic status, shift work, lifestyle factors and body mass index. However, the association disappeared after further adjustment for PM2.5 and evening noise, with HRs (95% CIs) of 1.02 (0.97 to 1.07), 1.01 (0.97 to 1.06) and 1.03 (0.97 to 1.08), respectively, for the participants exposed to the second, third and fourth quartiles of LAN. No significant associations were observed between LAN and CVD mortality, either. CONCLUSIONS We did not observe significant associations of LAN with NC and CVD mortality in this large nationwide cohort. The health effects of LAN remain unclear. Further studies are warranted to address this public health concern.

Abstract
Artificial light at night (ALAN) is a growing environmental hazard with economic, ecological, and public health implications. Previous studies suggested a higher burden of light pollution and related adverse effects in disadvantaged communities. It is critical to characterize the geographic distribution and temporal trend of ALAN and identify associated demographic and socioeconomic factors at the population level to lay the foundation for environmental and public health monitoring and policy-making. We used satellite data from the Black Marble suite to characterize ALAN in all counties in contiguous US and reported considerable variations in ALAN spatiotemporal patterns between 2012 and 2019. As expected, ALAN levels were generally higher in metropolitan and coastal areas; however, several rural counties in Texas experienced remarkable increase in ALAN since 2012, while population-level ALAN burden also increased substantially in many metropolitan areas. Importantly, we found that during this period, although the overall ALAN levels in the USA declined modestly, the temporal trend of ALAN varied across areas with different racial/ethnic compositions: counties with a higher percentage of racial/ethnic minority groups, particularly Hispanic populations, exhibited significantly less decline. As a result, the differences in ALAN levels, as measured by the Black Marble product, across racial/ethnic groups became larger between 2012 and 2019. In conclusion, our study documented variations in ALAN spatiotemporal patterns across America and identified multiple population correlates of ALAN patterns that warrant further investigations. Future studies should identify underlying factors (e.g., economic development and decline, urban planning, and transition to newer lighting technologies such as light emitting diodes) that may have contributed to ALAN disparities in the USA.

Abstract
Artificial light at night (ALAN) is related to various diseases, such as cancer, obesity, and coronary heart disease. However, its impact on blood pressure in adolescents is not well understood. To investigate this, we conducted a cross-sectional study with a nationwide sample of college students in China, who were freshmen from four disperse universities during Sep. and Oct. 2018. Mean levels of ALAN at participants' residential addresses during 2013-2018 were estimated using time-varying satellite data. The association of the 6-y average of ALAN with blood pressure was estimated by using generalized linear mixed models. A total of 17 046 participants (18.2 ± 0.7 y of age, 46.79% female) from 2,412 counties and cities were included in the final analysis. After a full adjustment for potential confounders, ALAN was positively associated with systolic blood pressure (β = 0.20, p = 0.032) and pulse pressure (β = 0.28, p = 0.001), but there was no association between ALAN and diastolic blood pressure (β = -0.08, p = 0.213). In the sensitivity analysis, the results consistent with the main analysis were observed. The blood pressure of males and those with a BMI ≤24 kg/m2 were more susceptible to ALAN exposure. Our findings highlight the importance of ALAN management for blood pressure control, particularly among male and normal-weight individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) is an emerging health risk factor that has been linked to a wide range of adverse health effects. Recent study suggested that disadvantaged neighborhoods may be exposed to higher levels of ALAN. Understanding how social disadvantage correlates with ALAN levels is essential for identifying the vulnerable populations and for informing lighting policy. METHODS We used satellite data from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Black Marble data product to quantify annual ALAN levels (2012-2019), and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) to quantify social disadvantage, both at the US census tract level. We examined the relationship between the ALAN and SVI (overall and domain-specific) in over 70,000 tracts in the Contiguous U.S., and investigated the heterogeneities in this relationship by the rural-urban status and US regions (i.e., Northeast, Midwest, South, West). RESULTS We found a significant positive relationship between SVI and ALAN levels. On average, the ALAN level in the top 20% most vulnerable communities was 2.46-fold higher than that in the 20% least vulnerable communities (beta coefficient (95% confidence interval) for log-transformed ALAN, 0.90 (0.88, 0.92)). Of the four SVI domains, minority and language status emerged as strong predictors of ALAN levels. Our stratified analysis showed considerable and complex heterogeneities across different rural-urban categories, with the association between greater vulnerability and higher ALAN primarily observed in urban cores and rural areas. We also found regional differences in the association between ALAN and both overall SVI and SVI domains. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggested ALAN as an environmental justice issue that may carry important public health implications. Funding National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Abstract
(1) Background: In 2013, the results of a pioneer study on abnormalities in the levels and circadian rhythmicity of expression of circadian clock genes in cancerous thyroid nodules was published. In the following years, new findings suggesting the involvement of circadian clockwork dysfunction into malignant transformation of thyroid tissue were gradually accumulating. This systematic review provides an update on existing evidence regarding the association of these genes with thyroid tumorigenesis. (2) Methods: Two bibliographic databases (Scopus and PubMed) were searched for articles from inception to 20 March 2023. The reference lists of previously published (nonsystematic) reviews were also hand-searched for additional relevant studies. (3) Results: Nine studies published between 2013 and 2022 were selected. In total, 9 of 12 tested genes were found to be either up- or downregulated. The list of such genes includes all families of core circadian clock genes that are the key components of three transcriptional-translational feedback loops of the circadian clock mechanism (BMAL1, CLOCK, NPAS2, RORα, REV-ERBα, PERs, CRYs, and DECs). (4) Conclusions: Examination of abnormalities in the levels and circadian rhythmicity of expression of circadian clock genes in thyroid tissue can help to reduce the rate of inadequate differential preoperative diagnosis for thyroid carcinoma.

Abstract
The prevalence of artificial lights not only improves the lighting conditions for modern society, but also poses kinds of health threats to human health. Although there are regulations and standards concerning light pollution, few of them are based on the potential contribution of improper lighting to diseases. Therefore, a better understanding of the health threats induced by light pollution may promote risk assessment and better regulation of artificial lights, thereby a healthy lighting environment. This review is based on a careful collection of the latest papers from 2018 to 2022 about the health threats of light pollution, both epidemiologically and experimentally. In addition to summing up the novel associations of light pollution with obesity, mental disorders, cancer, etc., we highlight the toxicological mechanism of light pollution via circadian disruption, since light pollution directly interferes with the natural light-dark cycles, and damages the circadian photoentrainment of organisms. And by reviewing the alternations of clock genes and disturbance of melatonin homeostasis induced by artificial lights, we aim to excavate the profound impacts of light pollution based on accumulating studies, thus providing perspectives for future research and guiding relevant regulations and standards.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Light at night (LAN) is a physiological environmental factor related to thyroid cancer (TC). The spatial relationship between the number of TC incident cases, LAN, air pollution and other macro social factors and stationarity needs to be further examined to provide evidence for regional control of TC. METHODS Spatial econometrics methods for spatial nonstationarity were used to explore the impacts of LAN, air pollutants, economic factors, and population size on the number of TC incident cases in 182 Chinese prefecture-level cities and the local coefficients were further tested for nonstationarity. Temporally weighted regression (TWR), geographically weighted regression (GWR), and geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) were compared in this study for model selection. RESULTS Based on the ordinary least squares (OLS), LAN, air pollutants, and urbanization all significantly affected the number of TC incident cases. GWR had the best goodness of fit, and the coefficients of all the variables passed the nonstationarity test. The strong positive impact of LAN was mainly concentrated in North China, air pollutants in Central China and neighboring regions, and urbanization in the eastern coast of China. CONCLUSIONS The locational factors of the prefecture-level city influence the spatial pattern of the number of TC incident cases. Governments should pay attention to this influence, adhere to the Health in All Policies principle, and formulate region-specific policies based on regional characteristics, which this study provides updated evidence for.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep plays a critical role in maintaining human health. This study aimed to explore the association between sleep status and thyroid nodules. METHODS A total of 2414 individuals aged 18 or older with euthyroidism were enrolled in this community-based survey. Sleep status was self-reported. Thyroid ultrasonography was performed to measure nodules. Multiple logistic analyses were applied to adjust for confounding factors. RESULTS The percentages of thyroid nodules among individuals who slept <5 hours, 5-8 hours, and >8 hours per night were 57.79% (115/199), 44.19% (833/1885) and 42.73% (141/330), respectively (p = 0.001). Individuals who slept <5 hours per night had a significantly higher percentage of thyroid nodules than those who slept 5-8 hours per night (57.79% vs. 44.19%, p = 0.001) or >8 hours per night (57.79% vs. 42.73%, P < 0.001). However, no similar result was shown between individuals who slept >8 hours and 5-8 hours per night (42.73% vs. 44.19%, p = 0.621). Multiple logistic analysis showed that a sleep duration of <5 hours per night was significantly associated with thyroid nodules (odds ratio (OR) 1.643, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.084-2.490, p = 0.019) when compared to a sleep duration of >8 hours per night. However, a sleep duration of <5 hours per night was not associated with thyroid nodules compared to a sleep duration of 5-8 hours (OR 1.294, 95% CI 0.918-1.824, p = 0.141). Similarly, no significant differences were seen among sleep duration per day, time of falling asleep, habit of daytime napping or thyroid nodules in multiple logistic analyses (all p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Short nighttime sleep duration was associated with thyroid nodules in our community-based population. Screening for thyroid nodules among these individuals is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While epidemiological studies have found correlations between light at night (LAN) and health effects, none has so far investigated the impacts of LAN on population mortality yet. We aimed to estimate the relative risk for mortality from exposure to LAN in Mainland China. METHODS This time-stratified case-crossover nationwide study used NPP-VIIRS to obtain daily LAN data of Mainland China between 2015 and 2019. The daily mortality data were obtained from the Disease Surveillance Point System in China. Conditional Poisson regression models were applied to examine the relative risk (RR) for mortality along daily LAN in each county, then meta-analysis was performed to combine the county-specific estimates at the national or regional level. RESULTS A total of 579 counties with an average daily LAN of 4.39 (range: 1.02-35.46) were included in the main analysis. The overall RRs per 100 nW/cm2/sr increases in daily LAN were 1.08 (95%CI: 1.05-1.11) for all-cause mortality and 1.08 (95%CI: 1.05-1.11) for natural-cause mortality. A positive association between LAN and all natural cause-specific mortality was observed, of which the strongest effect was observed on mortality caused by neuron system disease (RR = 1.32, 95%CI: 1.14-1.52). The results were robust in both younger and old, as well as in males and females. The more pronounced effect of LAN was observed in median LAN-level regions. Combined with an exposure-response curve, our study suggests a non-linear association between LAN and mortality in China. CONCLUSIONS Our study shows LAN is associated with mortality in China, particularly for neuron system disease-related mortality. These findings have important implications for public health policy establishment to minimize the health consequences of light pollution.

Abstract
The circadian rhythm is regulated by an intrinsic time-tracking system, composed both of a central and a peripheral clock, which influences the cycles of activities and sleep of an individual over 24 h. At the molecular level, the circadian rhythm begins when two basic helix-loop-helix/Per-ARNT-SIM (bHLH-PAS) proteins, BMAL-1 and CLOCK, interact with each other to produce BMAL-1/CLOCK heterodimers in the cytoplasm. The BMAL-1/CLOCK target genes encode for the repressor components of the clock, cryptochrome (Cry1 and Cry2) and the Period proteins (Per1, Per2 and Per3). It has been recently demonstrated that the disruption of circadian rhythm is associated with an increased risk of developing obesity and obesity-related diseases. In addition, it has been demonstrated that the disruption of the circadian rhythm plays a key role in tumorigenesis. Further, an association between the circadian rhythm disruptions and an increased incidence and progression of several types of cancer (e.g., breast, prostate, colorectal and thyroid cancer) has been found. As the perturbation of circadian rhythm has adverse metabolic consequences (e.g., obesity) and at the same time tumor promoter functions, this manuscript has the aim to report how the aberrant circadian rhythms affect the development and prognosis of different types of obesity-related cancers (breast, prostate, colon rectal and thyroid cancer) focusing on both human studies and on molecular aspects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND According to animal and human epidemiologic studies, exposure to outdoor light at night (LAN) may cause circadian disruption, which may disturb sleep quality and lead to incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS We followed 283,374 persons from 2006 through 2020. Outdoor LAN exposure was estimated using satellite data for individual address with 500 m2 scale buffer during follow-up. Incidence of T2DM was confirmed by hospital inpatient records. We identified potential confounders by a directed acyclic graph, including demographic, genetic, individual and regional level socioeconomic status, and environmental risk factors, and calculated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) through time-varying Cox proportional hazard model. Furthermore, we examined the association of outdoor LAN with a defined health sleep scores and moderation of genetic predisposition and shift work on the relationship of outdoor LAN and incident T2DM. RESULTS We identified 7,775 incident T2DM cases over 3,027,505 person-years. Higher outdoor LAN exposures were significantly associated with higher risk of T2DM. The estimated HR for incident T2DM with an interquartile range (IQR: 11.22 nW/cm2/sr) increase in outdoor LAN was 1.05 (95%CI: 1.01, 1.09) in the fully adjusted model. Participants who lived in the highest quarter of outdoor LAN area were more likely to develop T2DM (HR: 1.14,95%CI: 1.02, 1.27). Besides, those who were exposed to higher levels of outdoor LAN had poorer sleep quality. No moderation role of PRS on outdoor LAN-induced T2DM observed both on the multiplicated and additive scale. The hazards of outdoor LAN were observed in those who never owned a night shift work. CONCLUSION Although further work is required to clarify potential mechanisms, our findings indicate that exposure to residential outdoor LAN may contribute to T2DM risk and low sleep quality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Thyroid cancer has been an increasingly high-profile public health issue. Comprehensive assessment for its disease burden seems particularly important for understanding health priorities and hinting high-risk populations. METHODS We estimated the age-sex-specific thyroid cancer burden and its temporal trend in China from 1990 to 2019 by following the general methods from the global burden of disease (GBDs) 2019 Study. And Joinpoint regression model, the Cox-Stuart trend test, and Cochran-Armitage test were applied for the analysis of temporal and age trend. The Mantel-Haenszel statistical method was used to compare the gender difference. RESULTS From 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized incidence rate of thyroid cancer in China has almost doubled to 2.05 per 100,000. Although the mortality rate and DALY rate kept leveling off, they presented a downtrend among females, while an upward trend in males. While the average annual percentage changes of those metrics all became deline since 2010 than the previous years. With age advancing, the rates of incidence, mortality, and DALYs for both sexes all presented linear fashion increases, which was particularly typical among males. CONCLUSION Given the serious trend and gender-age heterogeneity of Chinese thyroid cancer burden, male gender and advanced age may be related to poor prognosis of thyroid cancer, and strengthening primary prevention and exploring the underlying risk factors should be among the top priorities.

Abstract
We conducted a non-systematic review of epidemiological studies on a potential link between exposure to outdoor artificial light at night (O-ALAN) and disease occurrence in humans published since 2009. In recent years, a number of presses have been published on this issue, but the conclusions have been mixed. We therefore decided to critically analyze the available epidemiological evidence of such a correlation. After a careful search, 51 studies were identified and included in the review. They addressed the potential link between O-ALAN exposure and the incidence of breast cancer, other cancers, sleep and circadian rhythm disorders, obesity and cardiovascular diseases, mental disorders, infectious diseases, and complications during pregnancy and childbirth. The vast majority of papers revealed the existence of such a link. However, the amount of epidemiological evidence supporting the correlation across groups of disorders varied widely. In addition, we found that all papers contained at least one of the following omissions: lack of the temporal and spatial resolution in light at night measurements, measuring only light intensity without considering its wavelength, and not accounting for many important confounding factors in their statistical analyses. Therefore, we believe that the link between O-ALAN exposure and the occurrence of the disorders in question suggested by the authors of the reviewed papers may be in some cases at least to some extent, a coincidence. Further epidemiological studies, free of significant omissions highlighted in this paper, are needed.

Abstract
The circadian system is an intricate molecular network of coordinating circadian clocks that organize the internal synchrony of the organism in response to the environment. These rhythms are maintained by genetically programmed positive and negative auto-regulated transcriptional and translational feedback loops that sustain 24-hour oscillations in mRNA and protein components of the endogenous circadian clock. Since inter and intracellular activity of the central pacemaker appears to reduce with aging, the interaction between the circadian clock and aging continues to elude our understanding. In this review article, we discuss circadian clock components at the molecular level and how aging adversely affects circadian clock functioning in rodents and humans. The natural decline in melatonin levels with aging strongly contributes to circadian dysregulation resulting in the development of neurological anomalies. Additionally, inappropriate environmental conditions such as Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) can cause circadian disruption or chronodisruption (CD) which can result in a variety of pathological diseases, including premature aging. Furthermore, we summarize recent evidence suggesting that CD may also be a predisposing factor for the development of age-related neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and Huntington's disease (HD), although more investigation is required to prove this link. Finally, certain chrono-enhancement approaches have been offered as intervention strategies to prevent, alleviate, or mitigate the impacts of CD. This review thus aims to bring together recent advancements in the chronobiology of the aging process, as well as its role in NDDs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accumulating evidence have investigated the effects of nighttime light exposure on sleep problems. Nevertheless, the evidence of the relationship between light at night (LAN) and sleep problems remains scarce and inconsistent. OBJECTIVE Conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis based on observational studies to examine the association between LAN exposure and sleep problems among human subjects. METHODS We systematically searched three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase) to identify potentially eligible studies through May 25, 2022. The risk of bias and the quality of the generated evidence were assessed by two authors using the National Toxicology Program's Office of Health Assessment and Translation (OHAT) risk of bias rating tool and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) guideline. Random-effects model was applied to synthesize the risk estimates across eligible studies. The heterogeneity of included studies was quantified by the statistics of I2. RESULTS A total of 7 cross-sectional studies comprising 577,932 participants were included. Individuals with higher levels of LAN exposure were associated with a 22 % (Summary Odds Ratio, SOR: 1.22, 95 %CI: 1.13-1.33) increased prevalence of sleep problems. The pooled effect size of indoor LAN exposure (SOR: 1.74, 95%CI: 1.27-2.37) associated with sleep problems was significantly higher than outdoor LAN exposure (SOR: 1.19, 95%CI: 1.11-1.29; P = 0.022). Additionally, dose-response analysis demonstrated that LAN intensity threshold exceeding 5.8 nW/cm2/sr (SOR: 1.04, 95%CI: 1.01-1.07) had a significant effect on sleep problems and the prevalence of sleep problems was increasing with increase in LAN intensity. CONCLUSIONS Overall, our findings support the detrimental effects of LAN exposure on sleep. Maintaining bedroom darkness at night may be a feasible measure to reduce the prevalence of sleep problems. Future longitudinal studies with more advanced LAN assessment methods are required to move the field forward.

Abstract
Excessive exposure to light at night (LAN) has become a serious public health concern. However, little is known about the impact of indoor LAN exposure on blood pressure, particularly among young adults. We aimed to investigate the effects of bedroom individual-level LAN exposure in real-world environment on blood pressure and hypertension among vulnerable young adults, and to evaluate the possible buffering effect of physical activity. In this cross-sectional study, a total of 400 healthy young adults aged 16-22 years were included. Bedroom LAN exposure was recorded at 1-min intervals for two consecutive nights using a TES-1339 R illuminance meter. Blood pressure was measured three times (8-11 a.m. in the physical examination day) in the seated position using an Omron HEM-7121 digital sphygmomanometer. A wrist-worn triaxial accelerometer (ActiGraph GT3X-BT) was used to assess physical activity for seven consecutive days. Each 1 lx increase of bedroom LAN intensity was associated with 0.55 mmHg-increase in SBP (95% CI: 0.15, 0.95), 0.30 mmHg-increase in DBP (95% CI: 0.06, 0.54), and 0.38 mmHg-increase in MAP (95% CI: 0.12, 0.65). Higher levels of LAN exposure were associated with increased risk of hypertension (LAN ≥ 3lx vs. LAN < 3lx: OR = 3.30, 95%CI = 1.19-9.19; LAN ≥ 5lx vs. LAN < 5lx: OR = 3.87, 95%CI = 1.37-10.98). However, these detrimental effects of bedroom LAN exposure on blood pressure and hypertension were not observed among young adults with high MVPA (≥2 h/day) level. MVPA can alleviate negative effects of bedroom LAN exposure on blood pressure and hypertension. Maintaining bedroom settings darkness at night may be an important strategy for reducing the risk of hypertension. Furthermore, for individuals living with high levels of indoor LAN exposure, regular physical activity may be a good option for preventing cardiovascular disease and hypertension.

Abstract
Exposure to artificial light at night (ALAN) has been associated with disruption of the circadian system, which has been pointed out to have detrimental effects on health. Exposure to outdoor ALAN is very frequent in industrialised countries due to nocturnal light pollution and the relevant involvement of the total workforce in shift work and night work. Ecological and epidemiologic studies highlight the association between exposure to ALAN and several diseases, mainly obesity and cancer. More recently, also indoor ALAN exposure has been investigated. Among several multifactorial mechanisms linking ALAN exposure and health risks, suppression of melatonin secretion plays a pivotal role leading to alterations in circadian rhythm patterns, that are detrimental in terms of appetite regulation, and dysfunctions in metabolic signalling and cell growth in cancer. In addition, gut dysbiosis, inflammation, hypovitaminosis D, imbalance in cytokine secretion and levels are responsible for the multiple relationship linking circadian dysregulation due to ALAN exposure and obesity, and cancer. Therefore, the current manuscript summarises human and basic studies pointing out the impact of ALAN exposure on health, mostly focusing on obesity and cancer. Based on extant evidence, prevention strategies for obesity and cancer should be prompted, targeting exposure to ALAN.

Abstract
Quantifying the exposome is key to understanding how the environment impacts human health and disease. However, accurately, and cost-effectively quantifying exposure in large population health studies remains a major challenge. Geospatial technologies offer one mechanism to integrate high-dimensional environmental data into epidemiology studies, but can present several challenges. In June 2021, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) held a workshop bringing together experts in exposure science, geospatial technologies, data science and population health to address the need for integrating multiscale geospatial environmental data into large population health studies. The primary objectives of the workshop were to highlight recent applications of geospatial technologies to examine the relationships between environmental exposures and health outcomes; identify research gaps and discuss future directions for exposure modeling, data integration and data analysis strategies; and facilitate communications and collaborations across geospatial and population health experts. This commentary provides a high-level overview of the scientific topics covered by the workshop and themes that emerged as areas for future work, including reducing measurement errors and uncertainty in exposure estimates, and improving data accessibility, data interoperability, and computational approaches for more effective multiscale and multi-source data integration, along with potential solutions.

Abstract
PURPOSE Accumulating evidence suggests that light at night (LAN) disrupts circadian rhythms and may increase risk of liver cancer. However, there is no population-based study that examined LAN and liver cancer risk. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between outdoor LAN and liver cancer risk in a prospective cohort. METHODS Residential outdoor LAN level was measured from satellite imagery in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study, a prospective cohort of 451,945 men and women, 50-71 years old. Relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using Cox proportional hazard models that adjusted for known risk factors for liver cancer and neighborhood characteristics. RESULTS During an average 12.2 years of follow-up, 897 liver cancers, 603 of which were hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC), were diagnosed. Residential outdoor LAN was not associated with risk of liver cancer (RRQ5 vs Q1 = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.77-1.20, p trend = 0.771) or HCC (RRQ5 vs Q1 = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.62-1.07, p trend = 0.425). CONCLUSION No association between outdoor LAN and risk of liver cancer or HCC may in part be due to limitations in LAN assessment. More studies on the relationship between light intensity, duration, timing, and wavelength and liver cancer are warranted.

Abstract
ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters are a large superfamily of membrane proteins that facilitate the translocation of heterogeneous substrates. Studies indicate that ABC transporters may play important roles in various carcinomas. However, the correlation between ABC transporters and immunomodulation in thyroid carcinoma (TC), as well as the prognoses for this disease, is poorly understood.TC data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database were used to identify prognostic hallmark ABC transporters associated with immune cell infiltration patterns via multiple bioinformatic analyses. Thereafter, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was performed to validate the expression of these selected hallmark ABC transporters in both TC and para-cancerous thyroid tissues. Of a total of 49 ABC transporters, five (ABCA8, ABCA12, ABCB6, ABCB8, and ABCC10) were identified as hallmark ABC transporters. All five were differentially expressed in TC and associated with the relapse-free survival rates of patients with TC. Immunoregulation by these five hallmark ABC transporters involved the modulation of various aspects of immune cell infiltration, such as hot or cold tumor subsets and the abundances of infiltrating immune cells, as well as specific immunomodulators and chemokines. Besides the diverse significantly correlated factors, the five hallmark ABC transporters and correlated genes were most highly enriched in plasma membrane, transporter activity, and transmembrane transport of small molecules. In addition, many chemicals, namely bisphenol A and vincristine, affected the expression of these five transporters. The qRT-PCR results of collected TC and para-cancerous thyroid tissues were consistent with those of TCGA. The findings in this study may reveal the role played by these five hallmark ABC transporters in regulating immune cell infiltration patterns in TC as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying their functions, leading to a better understanding of their potential prognostic and immunotherapeutic values.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several environmental factors have been identified to be associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) over the past decades. However, evidence is limited for the effect of exposure to outdoor light at night (LAN) on ASD in China and even elsewhere in the world. METHODS Participants in this study were from a multi-stage sampling survey on ASD conducted between June 2014 and October 2014 among children aged 3-12 years in Shanghai, China. All participants underwent a two-stage screening of ASD via questionnaire, and then, suspected cases were finally diagnosed by clinical examination. For data analyses, each ASD case was randomly matched with 10 healthy controls by age and sex. The LAN data were extracted from the stable lights product of the US Defense Meteorological Satellite Program's Operational Linescan System (DMSP-OLS) according to geolocation information of residential addresses. Mean levels of exposure to LAN during the 3 years after birth and 1 year before birth were calculated. We used conditional logistic regression models to examine the association between LAN and ASD. RESULTS We investigated 84,934 children from 96 kindergartens, 55 primary schools, and 28 special education schools, and 203 children were diagnosed as ASD cases. A total of 1727 children (157 ASD cases and 1570 healthy controls) were included in the final analyses. Brighter LAN exposures after and before birth were significantly associated with higher risk of ASD. After adjusting for potential covariates, adjusted odd ratios and 95% confidence intervals associated with per unit increase in LAN were 1.066 (1.027, 1.107) during the 3 years after birth and 1.046 (1.018, 1.075) during the 1 year before birth. CONCLUSIONS Results of our study concluded brighter LAN exposure was significantly associated with higher risk of ASD among Chinese children, which suggested that outdoor LAN could be a potential risk factor of ASD.

Abstract
Indoor light environment has altered dramatically and exposure to light at night (LAN) potential leads to the progression of cardiometabolic conditions. However, few studies have investigated the effect of bedroom LAN exposure on cardiometabolic risk. To estimate the associations between multi-period bedroom LAN exposure with cardiometabolic risk among Chinese young adults. We objectively measured multi-period bedroom LAN intensity using portable illuminance meter in an ongoing prospective cohort (n = 484). At one-year follow-up, 230 young adults provided fasting blood samples for quantification of cardiometabolic parameters. Cardiometabolic (CM)-risk score was derived as the sum of standardized sex-specific z-scores for waist circumference (WC), mean arterial pressure (MAP), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglyceride (TG) and homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), with HDL-C multiplied by - 1. Multivariate and univariable linear regression models were used to examine associations of multi-period bedroom LAN exposure with cardiometabolic risk. Exposure to higher bedroom LAN intensity is associated with 1.47-unit increase in CM-risk score (95% CI: 0.69-2.25; P < 0.001). Besides, post-bedtime light exposure was associated with elevated fasting insulin (PBL-1h: β = 0.06, 95% CI: 0.01-0.10; PBL-4h: β = 0.33, 95% CI: 0.19-0.47) and HOMA-IR (PBL-1h: β = 0.013, 95% CI: 0-0.03; PBL-4h: β = 0.07, 95% CI: 0.04-0.11) while pre-awake light exposure was associated with elevated total cholesterol (PAL-1h: β = 0.03, 95% CI: 0.02-0.04; PAL-2h: β = 0.02, 95% CI: 0.01-0.03), triglyceride (PAL-1h: β = 0.015, 95% CI: 0.01-0.02; PAL-2h: β = 0.01, 95% CI: 0-0.02) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (PAL-1h: β = 0.02, 95% CI: 0.01-0.03; PAL-2h: β = 0.02, 95% CI: 0.01-0.03). Among young adults, bedroom LAN exposure was significantly associated with higher cardiometabolic risk. Furthermore, different periods of bedroom light exposure have time-dependent effect on cardiometabolic risk. Further research is needed to confirm our findings and to elucidate potential mechanisms.

Abstract
Background Alternative splicing (AS) plays a key role in the diversity of proteins and is closely associated with tumorigenicity. The aim of this study was to systemically analyze RNA alternative splicing (AS) and identify its prognostic value for papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). Methods AS percent-splice-in (PSI) data of 430 patients with PTC were downloaded from the TCGA SpliceSeq database. We successfully identified recurrence-free survival (RFS)-associated AS events through univariate Cox regression, LASSO regression and multivariate regression and then constructed different types of prognostic prediction models. Gene function enrichment analysis revealed the relevant signaling pathways involved in RFS-related AS events. Simultaneously, a regulatory network diagram of AS and splicing factors (SFs) was established. Results We identified 1397 RFS-related AS events which could be used as the potential prognostic biomarkers for PTC. Based on these RFS-related AS events, we constructed a ten-AS event prognostic prediction signature that could distinguish high-and low-risk patients and was highly capable of predicting PTC patient prognosis. ROC curve analysis revealed the excellent predictive ability of the ten-AS events model, with an area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.889; the highest prediction intensity for one-year RFS was 0.923, indicating that the model could be used as a prognostic biomarker for PTC. In addition, the nomogram constructed by the risk score of the ten-AS model also showed high predictive efficiency for the prognosis of PTC patients. Finally, the constructed SF-AS network diagram revealed the regulatory role of SFs in PTC. Conclusion Through the limited analysis, AS events could be regarded as reliable prognostic biomarkers for PTC. The splicing correlation network also provided new insight into the potential molecular mechanisms of PTC.

Abstract
To study the alterations of sleep quality and circadian rhythm genes expressions upon elderly thyroid nodule patients, the risk factors associated with thyroid malignancies, and the potential relationship involved. The elderly people enrolled in our study were divided into three groups according to the thyroid histopathology: malignant nodule group, benign nodule group, and normal group, and the clinical data and sleep quality were collected. Among the patients of surgery, 56 fresh thyroid tissues were collected for real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry and western blotting analysis of CLOCK, BMAL1, CRYs and PERs. Poor sleep quality, sleep latency and daytime dysfunction were the independent risk factors of malignant nodule after adjusted by other impacts. The expression levels of CLOCK, BMAL1 and PER2 in thyroid malignant group were significantly higher than benign and normal groups, while CRY2 was decreased, p < 0.05. In addition, CLOCK and BMAL1 protein levels were positively correlated with PSQI of corresponding patients and CRY2 was negatively correlated. Circadian rhythm genes mainly altered in malignant nodules, and sleep disorders may be involved in the occurrence of elderly thyroid malignancy through the high expressions of CLOCK and BMAL1, and low expression of CRY2.
