Figure 1 Molecular and cellular mechanism of insulin resistance. Profound malnutrition or overnutrition leads to chronic pancreatic islet dysfunction, for example increased chronic second phase insulin secretion. This results in reduced insulin sensitivity and fat accumulation in multiple organs, particularly the skeletal muscles, the liver and adipose tissues. A unique serous proteomic profile in individuals with insulin resistance was demonstrated in comparison with healthy individuals. Dixon sequence of the erector may become another surrogate biomarker.
