Prof. Md. Shahidul Islam, PhD; Professor of Biochemistry and Academic Leader: Biotechnology Cluster, School of Life Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban 4000, South Africa Diabetes and obesity are two major global public health problems, when more 95% diabetic patients are suffering from type 2 diabetes, which is closely related with obesity. On the other hand, animal models are very common in biomedical research including diabetes due to numerous reasons. Our research focuses the development of novel, non-genetic animal models of type 2 diabetes and obesity, particularly in rats and mice. We also conduct a number anti-diabetic and anti-obesity intervention trials by using various antidiabetic natural compounds, extracts and fractions from medicinal plants as well as by using a number of medicinal and functional foods, natural (sugar alcohols) and artificial sweeteners. So far I published 14 peer reviewed book chapters, more than 220+ research articles in the international peer reviewed journals including 11 reviews and one editorial since 2004.I have been rated as a committed young researcher by the National Research Foundation (NRF), South Africa and I am currently holding C1 rating from NRF, South Africa. During 2019 and 2022, I have been nominated as Top2% Global Researcher respectively by Mandeley.com and Elsevier.digitalcommonsdata.com published by Stanford University, USA. During 2021, I have been nominated as Top0.016% Global Researchers in the area of Experimental Diabetes Research by ExpertEscape.com. I have been also serving as a regular reviewer of more than 20 international peer reviewed journals in the field of my expertise and working as a Member of the Editorial Board of 5 international journals such as Frontiers in Pharmacology and Drug Discovery (Switzerland), Food and Nutrition Report (England), Journal of Biochemical and Pharmacological Research (USA), Recent Patents in Food, Nutrition and Agriculture (UAE), World Journal of Diabetes (China); and Guest Editor of Frontiers in Chemistry, Switzerland and served as a Lead Guest Editor of two international peer reviewed journals (Molecules and Journal of Diabetes Research). Recently, I have been appointed as an “Editor-in-Chief” of the “World Journal of Diabetes”. My personal goal to establish myself as a world renowned researchers in the area of type 2 diabetes and obesity including Endocrinology and Metabolism. I have a strong inter-personal communication skills and progressively successful leadership skills which have been proven by the progressive success of the academics and researchers under my line management for the previous years. Travelling to new places is one my top hoppy along with sports, physical exercise and discovering new things.
