Abstract
Raspberry pomace (RBP) is rich in phenolic compounds. This study aims to optimize the extraction of phenolics from RBP and assess their bioaccessibility and bioactivity. The extraction process revealed that ethanol 50 % was the most effective solvent. Microwave-assisted hydroethanolic extraction (MAE) significantly outperformed conventional methods, with optimal conditions of 200 °C for 10 min yielding the highest concentrations of total phenolics (68 mg GAE/g RBP) and flavonoids (63 mg RE/g RBP). Eleven phenolic compounds were identified by HPLC-ESI-MS, with gallic acid and protocatechuic acid being the most prevalent. The gastrointestinal digestion revealed that although some phenolics suffered degradation (like ferulic acid and quercetin), phenolics are more bioaccessible and have relevant antioxidant activity. RBP extract exhibited anti-inflammatory activity by downregulating pro-inflammatory IL-1β and upregulating anti-inflammatory IL-10 cytokines in LPS-activated macrophages. These findings underscore the effectiveness of MAE in extracting bioactives from RBP, highlighting its potential in developing functional foods and nutraceuticals.

Abstract
Some cereal proteins and their digestive peptides exhibit the potential to regulate blood glucose levels, which is important for the management of diabetes and its complications. Proteins in common grains, such as wheat and buckwheat, and in legumes, such as kidney beans and soybeans, contain proteinaceous α-amylase inhibitors (α-AIs) that inhibit the breakdown of starch into reducing sugars, thereby mitigating postprandial glucose spikes. Indigestible cereal proteins function similarly to dietary fibers by adsorbing glucose and facilitating its excretion and stabilizing blood glucose levels. Moreover, peptides derived from these proteins can suppress glucose transporter expression in the intestine, thereby reducing glucose absorption. They also promote insulin secretion by inhibiting dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV), an enzyme that breaks down incretin hormones. Collectively, these properties highlight the potential of cereal proteins and peptides in functional foods for blood glucose management.

Abstract
Obesity is a significant health concern, significantly contributing to increased morbidity and mortality by disrupting multiple physiological systems. It is strongly associated with metabolic dysfunctions, including impaired glycemic homeostasis, compromised intestinal barrier integrity, and gut microbiota imbalances, all exacerbating the risk of chronic diseases. The hydroalcoholic extract of açaí seeds (ASE), rich in phenolic compounds, has demonstrated beneficial effects on obesity and hyperglycemia; however, its impacts on gut health and gut-hypothalamus communication remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of ASE in intestinal and hypothalamic alterations associated with obesity and compare it with Metformin. Male C57BL/6 mice were fed a high-fat or standard diet for 14 weeks. The ASE (300 mg/kg/day) and Metformin (300 mg/kg/day) treatments started in the tenth week until the fourteenth week, totaling four weeks of treatment. Our data show that the treatment with ASE and Metformin reduced body weight, ameliorated lipid profile, hyperglycemia, and plasma hyperleptinemia, and decreased the oxidative damage in the gut by reducing immunostaining of 8-isoprostane and NOX-4 expression, and improved the intestinal parameters and hypothalamic gene expression. Obesity-induced dysbiosis in the HF group was marked by reduced Proteobacteria and elevated LPS plasma levels, which were improved by treatments with ASE and Metformin. These findings suggest that ASE and Metformin are promising strategies to counteract the adverse effects of obesity on intestinal health and gut-hypothalamus communication, though they act through distinct mechanisms. Therefore, we can suggest that ASE is a promising natural product for treating the intestinal alterations associated with obesity.

Abstract
The consumption of açaí has been shown to be beneficial to health. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of juçara açai (JU, Euterpe edulis Martius) administration before gestation on the biometric, metabolic, and oxidative status in pregnant rats of advanced maternal age. Healthy female Wistar rats were treated with JU pulp via gavage from postnatal day 168 to 210. After treatment, the rats were mated, and during the 20 days of pregnancy, they were evaluated for body weight (BW), glucose tolerance, adipose tissue and liver weight, the lipid profile, and hepatic oxidative status. At birth, the offspring were weighed and counted. It was observed that JU reduced just maternal glycaemia. The maternal preconceptional treatment did not affect offspring BW. These results suggest that JU could be a safe nutritional intervention during the preconception period in advanced maternal age.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of enriched polyphenols-loaded alginate nanoparticles (EP-loaded AlgNP) on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced Rin-5F cells. The alginate nanoparticles of enriched polyphenols from Desmodium gangeticum leaves were synthesised by ionic-gelation process using sodium alginate as biopolymer. The nanoparticles were characterized in terms of their size, morphology using HR-TEM, FESEM, Zeta potential, and FTIR. Our findings showed that the formulated EP-loaded AlgNP exhibited spherical particles (<100 nm) with a zeta potential of -48.8 mV. The total polyphenol content (TPC) and the biological activities of EP-loaded AlgNP showed significant stability throughout 12-months compared to EP (p < 0.05). The EP-loaded AlgNP at pH 7.4 showed optimal TPC release and followed Korsmeyer-Peppas model. The bio-accessibility of EP-loaded AlgNP was also enhanced under simulated gastrointestinal condition. In vitro experiments revealed that EP-loaded AlgNP enhanced insulin secretion impaired by STZ and improved the cell viability. Further, it mitigated oxidative stress by suppressing activation of NF-κB and upregulated mRNA expression of insulin signaling molecules like IR, IRS-1, and GLUT 2 in STZ-induced RIN-5F cells (p < 0.0001). Overall, the synthesis of EP-loaded AlgNP could be a promising approach and might be an effective therapeutic option for treating diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES p-Coumaric acid (CA), a 4-hydroxycinnamic acid derivative, is widely distributed in nature and exerts various beneficial biological effects. However, the effects of CA on metabolic abnormalities triggered by excessive fructose intake, such as dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and insulin resistance, have not been sufficiently investigated. Our objective was to investigate whether CA ameliorates high-fructose diet (HFrD)-induced metabolic dysregulation. MATERIALS/METHODS Golden Syrian hamsters were randomly assigned to 3 groups and were fed diets containing 60% cornstarch (CON group), 60% fructose (HFrD group), or 60% fructose with CA (0.02%) (HFrD+CA group) for 5 weeks. RESULTS HFrD feeding significantly increased the levels of plasma triglyceride, apolipoprotein (apo)-CIII, fasting blood glucose, and homeostatic model assessment insulin resistance, and tended to increase plasma total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein/very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL/VLDL-C) compared with the CON group. In HFrD-fed hamsters, CA supplementation significantly decreased plasma TC, LDL/VLDL-C, apo-CIII, and fasting blood glucose levels. Moreover, CA significantly decreased the hepatic lipid levels and fibrosis induced by HFrD. The plasma and hepatic lipid-lowering effects of CA were associated with decreased enzyme activity and mRNA expression of genes involved in fatty acid, triglyceride, and cholesterol synthesis as well as increased activity of carnitine palmitoyltransferase, a rate-limiting enzyme in fatty acid oxidation, in the liver. CA-treated hamsters also exhibited decreased hepatic gluconeogenic enzyme activity and increased hepatic glycolytic enzyme activity, with mRNA expression changes similar to these activity patterns. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that CA potentially improves metabolic abnormalities associated with excessive fructose intake, such as hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and NAFLD.

Abstract
In the past decade, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has become pivotal in clinical diagnosis, drug discovery, and bioanalytical science due to its high sensitivity and rapid analysis. We have developed an ultrasensitive and robust LC-MS/MS method for the simultaneous detection and quantification of cyclosporine A (CsA) and urolithin A (UA) employing ascomycin (ASC) and naringenin (NAR) as internal standards (ISTDs). The method was validated for clinical use, revealing interspecies differences between human plasma and other mammals (e.g., mouse, rat, feline, canine, and bovine serum). Validation parameters, including accuracy, precision, limits of quantification, specificity, selectivity, carryover, linearity, stability, and recovery, met acceptable ICH standards. Linear regression across the full calibration range (1-250 ng/mL for CsA and 0.5-125 ng/mL for UA) yielded an average R2 ≥ 0.999 in all mammal models. The method achieved a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 1-2.5 ng/mL across all model plasma samples with negligible carryover and demonstrated sample stability up to 96 h intra- and interday and 48 h for bovine serum. The method was successfully applied to quantify CsA and UA in canine samples following oral administration from a previous study. With a rapid run time of 6 min, this method offers high selectivity and precision, making it ideal for analyzing limited sample sizes and addressing regulatory challenges. The ability to simultaneously quantify CsA and UA has significant clinical potential for managing complex immuno-inflammatory diseases, enabling precise dose adjustments, and optimizing treatment outcomes.

Abstract
The increasing interest in sustainability has driven research into the utilization of food by-products. Onion by-products, rich in bioactive compounds, represent a valuable resource for developing functional ingredients; however, they are prone to degradation due to environmental factors such as light, heat, and oxygen, leading to reduced efficacy and increased spoilage. Microencapsulation represents an effective approach to meet important goals in the formulation of food products such as the protection against degradation or the control of interactions with other ingredients that may modify and impair their functionality. This study explores the microencapsulation of flavonoid-rich onion by-product extract through spray drying, employing various wall materials (maltodextrin and a mixture of maltodextrin/trehalose and maltodextrin/trehalose/inulin) and their effect on the chemical and physical properties of the powders such as encapsulation efficiency, total flavonoids content, moisture content, water activity, bulk density, and bulk tapped density. The storage stability was further evaluated. This research supports waste reduction and suggests strategies for developing functional ingredients with extended shelf life and controlled release properties.

Abstract
Hyperlipidemia is a key risk factor mainly for hypertension and cardiac abnormalities. Previously eucalyptus plant (river red gum) had been used for its medicinal value for the treatment of many ailments. This study focused on phytochemical examination, investigation of an in vitro potential and in vivo effects in mice fed with high cholesterol diet, GC-MS analysis of extracts of Eucalyptus camaldulensis leaves and further confirmation of anti-hyperlipidemic potential of different constituents of plant extracts by using in silico technique. For in vitro study screening of different extracts of Eucalyptus camaldulensis leaves was performed by using pancreatic lipase enzyme inhibition assay. Ethanolic extract presented the highest potential among all the extracts by inhibiting pancreatic lipase having IC50-11.88 µg/mL. For in vivo study mice were fed with high cholesterol diet for induction of Hyperlipidemia. Water extract showed great anti-hyperlipidemic potential by reducing the level of cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoproteins and increasing high density lipoproteins level significantly (p < 0.05). Moreover, molecular docking and prime MM-GBSA study were applied for screening of compounds having anti-hyperlipidemic potential which showed that Alpha-cadinol was the lead compound for inhibition of pancreatic lipase enzyme having docking score (-6.604). The ADMET properties and toxicity profile of the top docked compounds were also detailed for ensuring their safety aspects. In this way in silico analysis substantiate the experimental findings by showing anti-hyperlipidemic potential in constituents of eucalyptus plant. Thus, there is a need of advanced research for isolation of active constituents having said anti-hyperlipidemic potential in the Eucalyptus camaldulensis plant.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
Triphala is a traditional Ayurvedic herbal formulation composed of three fruits: amla (Phyllanthus emblica), bibhitaki (Terminalia bellerica), and haritaki (Terminalia chebula). Triphala is a potent Ayurvedic remedy that promotes digestion, detoxification, and overall wellness, while also providing antioxidant benefits through its trio of nutrient-rich fruits. In order to elucidate the individual contributions of the three ingredients of Triphala from molecular perspective, the individual ingredients were used for the untargeted LCMS/MS analysis. Fresh fruits (PE, TC, and TB) were collected, processed into coarse powders, and sequentially extracted {hexane, chloroform, and ethyl acetate}. LCMS/MS data analysis was performed on the resultant metabolites, with bioinformatics tools employed for pathway enrichment, target prediction, and classification of identified compounds. Additionally, polyphenols were identified as key compounds with potential health benefits. LCMS analysis of the individual extracts identified a total of 10227 features, resulting in 2515 annotated metabolites, with PE contributing the highest number at 1286. Comparative analysis revealed 408 non-redundant metabolites, with 74.2% being unique to individual fruits, underscoring the complementary phytochemical profiles. Pathway enrichment analysis highlighted dominant phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathways across all extracts, while a comprehensive polyphenol classification identified 71 polyphenols, with significant interactions predicted between polyphenols and gut microbiota. Additionally, five common polyphenols showed potential human targets related to antioxidant activity. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the phytochemical diversity and potential health benefits of Triphala, supporting its traditional use in promoting health.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is currently regarded as a global public health crisis for which lifelong treatment with conventional drugs presents limitations in terms of side effects, accessibility, and cost. Type 2 diabetes (T2DM), usually associated with obesity, is characterized by elevated blood glucose levels, hyperlipidemia, chronic inflammation, impaired β-cell function, and insulin resistance. If left untreated or when poorly controlled, DM increases the risk of vascular complications such as hypertension, nephropathy, neuropathy, and retinopathy, which can be severely debilitating or life-threatening. Plant-based foods represent a promising natural approach for the management of T2DM due to the vast array of phytochemicals they contain. Numerous epidemiological studies have highlighted the importance of a diet rich in plant-based foods (vegetables, fruits, spices, and condiments) in the prevention and management of DM. Unlike conventional medications, such natural products are widely accessible, affordable, and generally free from adverse effects. Integrating plant-derived foods into the daily diet not only helps control the hyperglycemia observed in DM but also supports weight management in obese individuals and has broad health benefits. In this review, we provide an overview of the pathogenesis and current therapeutic management of DM, with a particular focus on the promising potential of plant-based foods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The convergence of cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic disorders at the pathophysiological level has led to the recognition of cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome, which represents a significant global health challenge. Polyphenols, a group of phytochemicals, have demonstrated potential health-promoting effects. METHODS This review highlights the impact of maternal polyphenol supplementation on the CKM health of offspring. RESULTS Initially, we summarize the interconnections between polyphenols and each aspect of CKM syndrome. We then discuss in vivo studies that have investigated the use of polyphenols during pregnancy and breastfeeding, focusing on their role in preventing CKM syndrome in offspring. Additionally, we explore the common mechanisms underlying the protective effects of maternal polyphenol supplementation. CONCLUSIONS Overall, this review underscores the potential of early-life polyphenol interventions in safeguarding against CKM syndrome in offspring. It emphasizes the importance of continued research to advance our understanding and facilitate the clinical translation of these interventions.

Abstract
Phytochemicals are compounds found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and legumes that are non-nutritive but have bioactive properties. A high intake of these compounds is essential for optimal health and disease prevention. No study has investigated the association between Dietary Phytochemical Index (DPI) and polyneuropathy in patients with diabetes. This study aimed to examine the association between DPI and Diabetic Sensory-motor Polyneuropathy (DSPN) in a case-control study. In this case-control study, a total of 185 diabetic patients with DSPN (case group) and 185 sex- and age-matched diabetic patients without neuropathy (control group) were enrolled in this study. Participants were 30-60 years old. A validated food frequency questionnaire was used to measure the dietary intake of all participants. Daily energy derived from phytochemical-rich foods was used to calculate the DPI score. Toronto clinical neuropathy score was applied to define DSPN. Anthropometric data and fasting blood glucose levels were measured using standard methods. The Binary logistic regression was used to estimate Crude and multivariable-adjusted OR (95% CI) for DSPN across tertiles of DPI for the whole population. In the crude model, there was a significant trend across the tertile of DPI (OR highest vs. lowest tertile of DPI = 0.33; 95%CI 0.18, 0.52; P-trend < 0.001). After controlling for age, sex, and energy, a significant reverse association was observed between DPI and DSPN (OR highest vs. lowest tertile of DPI = 0.27; 95%CI 0.15, 0·48; P-trend < 0.001). Moreover, after adjusting for a wide range of confounding variables such as energy intake, physical activity, education, smoking status, and HbA1c, participants in the third tertile of DPI had 75% reduced odds for DSPN (95%CI 0.14, 0.45; P-trend < 0.001). Finally in the full adjusted model, after further adjustment for BMI, observed significant association was remained (OR highest vs. lowest tertile of DPI: 0.24; 95% CI 0.13, 0.14; P-trend < 0.001). Higher intakes of phytochemical-rich foods are associated with lower odds of DSPN.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Extra virgin olive oil is a fundamental component of the Mediterranean diet. It contains several molecules that sustain human well-being by modulating cellular metabolism and exerting antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-ageing effects to protect normal tissues, and it can exert anti-angiogenic and pro-apoptotic effects on cancer cells. Metabolites found in different parts of the olive tree, including leaves, also possess properties that might help in cancer prevention and promote wellness in aging. Olive mill wastewater (OMWW), a liquid residue produced during olive oil extraction, represents an environmental issue. However, it is rich in phytochemicals with potential beneficial properties. Dietary supplements based on OMWW can be produced for nutritional supplementation with advantages to the ecology. PURPOSE This work aims to measure hematochemical, anthropometric, and metabolomic parameters in volunteers taking an OMWW dietary supplement, Oliphenolia® (OMWW-OL). METHODS The supplementation of OMWW-OL 25 mL twice daily for 30 days was tested on a pilot cohort of volunteers with characteristics close to metabolic syndrome. Hematochemical, anthropometric, serum biomarkers and serum metabolomic parameters were analyzed before the intervention, at 30 days, and 30 days after stopping consumption. RESULTS A total of 29 volunteers were enrolled, and 23 completed the study. The participants' parameters at baseline were measured, and then twice daily at 30 days of treatment and 30 days after assumption discontinuation. Although treatment was with an olive derivative, their weight did not increase. Their body mass index, instead of augmenting, slightly decreased, particularly in the women. Also, hydration increased, especially in the women, while blood pressure, glycemia, and insulin decreased. Cholesterol, high-density lipoproteins, and triglycerides were stable, and LDL levels decreased, while vitamin D levels, alongside calcium, perceptibly increased. Albumin also increased. All the values were in support of an equilibrium, with no damaging effects. By mass spectrometry analysis, we also found favorable changes in the vitamin D/histamine and homocysteine/methionine ratios, an increase in a new metabolite of unknown formula, and the vitamin D/unknown metabolite ratio. CONCLUSIONS Supplementation of OMWW-OL has no detrimental effects and might imply the beneficial modulation of several biological parameters. Although this is a small pilot study, with limited potency, it preliminarily suggests that the OMWW extract use could be potentially valuable for people at risk of metabolic syndrome. Some of these parameters could also be relevant in supporting healthy ageing and in cancer prevention.

Abstract
Kynurenic acid (KYNA) is an antioxidant degradation product of tryptophan that has been shown to have a variety of cytoprotective, neuroprotective and neuronal signalling properties. However, mammalian transporters and receptors display micromolar binding constants; these are consistent with its typically micromolar tissue concentrations but far above its serum/plasma concentration (normally tens of nanomolar), suggesting large gaps in our knowledge of its transport and mechanisms of action, in that the main influx transporters characterized to date are equilibrative, not concentrative. In addition, it is a substrate of a known anion efflux pump (ABCC4), whose in vivo activity is largely unknown. Exogeneous addition of L-tryptophan or L-kynurenine leads to the production of KYNA but also to that of many other co-metabolites (including some such as 3-hydroxy-L-kynurenine and quinolinic acid that may be toxic). With the exception of chestnut honey, KYNA exists at relatively low levels in natural foodstuffs. However, its bioavailability is reasonable, and as the terminal element of an irreversible reaction of most tryptophan degradation pathways, it might be added exogenously without disturbing upstream metabolism significantly. Many examples, which we review, show that it has valuable bioactivity. Abstract
Free Fatty Acids (FFAs) are vital for energy homeostasis and the pathogenesis of a variety of diseases, including diabetes. For the first time, we presumed and investigated the types and levels of FFAs and their links to Insulin Resistance (IR) and Oxidative Stress (OS) in T2DM. A case-control study was conducted on 60 individuals with diabetes, 60 prediabetics with IFG, and 60 control groups. A Gas Chromatography Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) was used to estimate FFAs, which were then classified based on length and saturation. Indeed, antioxidant parameters such as TAC, MDA levels, PON-1, SOD-3, and CAT activity were assessed. Higher levels of LCFFA, SFFA, USFFA, and total FFA were found in people with diabetes and prediabetes. These levels were also linked to higher levels of HOMA-IR, BMI, FBS, HbA1C, and MDA, but lower levels of antioxidants. Furthermore, adjusting the above FFAs with age, sex, and antihypertensive medication increased T2DM development. SCFFA and ω3/6 fatty acids had a negative relationship with HOMA-IR, FBS, and insulin and a positive relationship with TAC. Adjusted SCFFA reduces T2DM risk. According to our models, total FFA is utilized to diagnose diabetes (AUC = 83.98, cut-off > 919 μM) and SCFFA for prediabetes (AUC = 82.32, cut-off < 39.56 μM). Total FFA (≥ 776 μM), LCFFA (≥ 613 μM), SFFA (≥ 471 μM), and USFFA (≥ 398 μM) all increase the risk of T2DM by increasing OS, BMI, and HOMA-IR. On the other hand, SCFFAs (≥ 38.7 μM) reduce the risk of T2DM by reducing BMI, HOMA-IR, and OS. SCFFAs and total FFAs can be used for the diagnosis of prediabetes and diabetes, respectively.

Abstract
Background The marine environment, with its rich biodiversity and nutrient-dense ecosystems, offers immense potential for discovering novel pharmaceutical products. Sargassum wightii is a type of brown seaweed that is particularly abundant in sulfated polysaccharides and polyphenolic compounds. These compounds are renowned for their wide range of biological activities. The exploration of such marine resources is crucial for identifying new compounds that can be harnessed for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications. Aims and objectives The primary aim of this study is to explore the bioactive compounds present in S. wightii, with a specific focus on its polyphenolic content. Additionally, the study seeks to evaluate the antioxidant properties of the compound. By doing so, the research aims to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on marine bioresources and their potential health benefits. Methods S. wightii samples were collected from the Mandapam coastal region in Rameshwaram, India. The cleaned seaweed was transported to the laboratory, where it was further washed, shade-dried, and ground into a fine powder. The powdered seaweed was then subjected to extraction using four different solvents: n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. Phytochemical analyses were conducted on these extracts to identify the presence of various bioactive compounds. The total phenolic content of the extracts was determined, and antioxidant activity was assessed using the phosphomolybdenum method. Functional groups present in the extracts were identified using Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Results Among the solvents used, the methanol extract yielded the highest amount of crude extract. Phytochemical analysis revealed a variety of bioactive compounds, with the methanol extract showing a notable presence of polyphenols. The total phenolic content was measured at 1.25 ± 0.6 mg gallic acid equivalence (GAE)/g of extract. The antioxidant activity, assessed through the phosphomolybdenum method, demonstrated significant free radical scavenging capabilities with an IC50 (half maximal inhibitory concentration) value of 68.23 ± 3.5 μg/mL. FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed the presence of functional groups characteristic of polyphenols and other bioactive compounds. Conclusion The study highlights the significant potential of S. wightii as a source of bioactive compounds with substantial antioxidant properties. These findings emphasize the importance of marine algae in the development of pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products, showcasing S. wightii's promising role in health-related applications.

Abstract
Background Diabetes mellitus is a common chronic metabolic disorder that is characterized by increased levels of glucose for prolonged periods of time. Incessant hyperglycemia leads to diabetic complications such as retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy, and cardiovascular complications such as ischemic heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, diabetic cardiomyopathy, stroke, etc. There are many studies that suggest that various polyphenols affect glucose homeostasis and can help to attenuate the complications associated with diabetes. Objective This review focuses on the possible role of various dietary polyphenols in palliating diabetes-induced cardiovascular complications. This review also aims to give an overview of the interrelationship among ROS production (due to diabetes), inflammation, glycoxidative stress, and cardiovascular complications as well as the anti-hyperglycemic effects of dietary polyphenols. Methods Various scientific databases including Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, Springer Link, and Wiley Online Library were used for searching articles that complied with the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results This review lists several polyphenols based on various pre-clinical and clinical studies that have anti-hyperglycemic potential as well as a protective function against cardiovascular complications. Conclusion Several pre-clinical and clinical studies suggest that various dietary polyphenols can be a promising intervention for the attenuation of diabetes-associated cardiovascular complications.

Abstract
Dietary interventions are receiving increasing attention for maintaining host health and diminishing disease risk. This study endeavored to elucidate the intervention effect of chlorogenic acid coupled with extruded rice starch (CGA-ES) in mitigating lipid metabolism disorders induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) in rats. First, a significant increase in resistant starch (RS) and a decrease in the predicted glycemic index (pGI) were observed in CGA-ES owing to the formation of an ordered structure (Dm, single helix, and V-type crystalline structure) and partly released CGA. Compared to a physical mixture of starch and chlorogenic acid (CGA + S), CGA-ES showed a more potent effect in alleviating lipid metabolism disorders, manifesting as reduced levels of blood glucose, serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (AKP), as well as body weight. It is correlated with an improvement in the gut microecology, featuring bacteria known for cholesterol reduction and butyrate production (Butyricicoccus, Bifidobacterium, Fusicatenibacter, Turicibacter, and Enterorhabdus), along with bile acid, butyrate and PG (PG (17:0/16:0) and PG (18:1/16:0)). The RS fraction of CGA-ES was found to be the main contributor. These findings would provide evidence for future studies to regulate lipid metabolism disorders, and even obesity using CGA-ES.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are characterized by abnormalities in the heart, blood vessels, and blood flow. CVDs comprise a diverse set of health issues. There are several types of CVDs like stroke, endothelial dysfunction, thrombosis, atherosclerosis, plaque instability and heart failure. Identification of a new drug for heart disease takes longer duration and its safety efficacy test takes even longer duration of research and approval. This chapter explores drug repurposing, nano-therapy, and plant-based treatments for managing CVDs from existing drugs which saves time and safety issues with testing new drugs. Existing drugs like statins, ACE inhibitor, warfarin, beta blockers, aspirin and metformin have been found to be useful in treating cardiac disease. For better drug delivery, nano therapy is opening new avenues for cardiac research by targeting interleukin (IL), TNF and other proteins by proteome interactome analysis. Nanoparticles enable precise delivery to atherosclerotic plaques, inflammation areas, and damaged cardiac tissues. Advancements in nano therapeutic agents, such as drug-eluting stents and drug-loaded nanoparticles are transforming CVDs management. Plant-based treatments, containing phytochemicals from Botanical sources, have potential cardiovascular benefits. These phytochemicals can mitigate risk factors associated with CVDs. The integration of these strategies opens new avenues for personalized, effective, and minimally invasive cardiovascular care. Altogether, traditional drugs, phytochemicals along with nanoparticles can revolutionize the future cardiac health care by identifying their signaling pathway, mechanism and interactome analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES The present study investigated the effect of curcumin and eicosapentaenoic acid, as one the main components of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, on anthropometric, glucose homeostasis, and gene expression markers of cardio-metabolic risk in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. SUBJECTS/METHODS This clinical trial was conducted at the Endocrinology Clinic of Imam Reza Hospital in Tabriz. It aimed to determine the impact of Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA), and curcumin supplements on various health indicators in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2) from 2021.02.01 to 2022.02.01. The study was a randomized double-blinded clinical trial and conducted over 12 weeks with 100 participants randomly divided into four groups. Stratified randomization was used to assign participants to two months of supplementation based on sex and Body Mass Index (BMI). The study comprised four groups: Group 1 received 2 capsules of 500 mg EPA and 200 mg DHA, along with 1 nano-curcumin placebo; Group 2 received 1 capsule of 80 mg nano-curcumin and 2 omega 3 Fatty Acids placebos; Group 3 received 2 capsules of 500 mg EPA and 200 mg DHA, and 1 capsule of 80 mg nano-curcumin; Group 4, the control, received 2 omega 3 Fatty Acids placebos and 1 nano-curcumin placebo. RESULTS After twelve weeks of taking EPA + Nano-curcumin supplements, the patients experienced a statistically significant reduction in insulin levels in their blood [MD: -1.44 (-2.70, -0.17)]. This decrease was significantly greater than the changes observed in the placebo group [MD: -0.63 (-1.97, 0.69)]. The EPA + Nano-curcumin group also showed a significant decrease in High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-CRP) levels compared to the placebo group (p < 0.05). Additionally, the EPA + Nano-curcumin group had a significant increase in Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC) levels compared to the placebo group (p < 0.01). However, there were no significant differences in Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS), Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) index, Quantitative Insulin Sensitivity Check Index (QUICKI), or Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1C) levels between the four groups (all p > 0.05). There were significant differences between the Nano-curcumin and EPA groups [MD: -17.02 (-32.99, -1.05)], and between the Nano-curcumin and control groups [MD: -20.76 (-36.73, -4.79)] in terms of lowering the serum cholesterol level. The difference in Triglycerides (TG) serum levels between the EPA + Nano-curcumin and placebo groups were not statistically significant (p = 0.093). The Nano-curcumin group showed significant decreases in Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) levels compared to the EPA group [MD: -20.12 (-36.90, -3.34)] and the control group [MD: -20.79 (-37.57, -4.01)]. There was a near-to-significant difference in High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) serum levels between the EPA + Nano-curcumin and EPA groups (p = 0.056). Finally, there were significant differences in the decrease of serum Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) levels between the EPA and Nano-curcumin groups [MD: -127.50 (-247.91, -7.09)], the EPA and placebo groups [MD: 126.25 (5.83, 246.66)], the EPA + Nano-curcumin and Nano-curcumin groups [MD: -122.76 (-243.17, -2.35)], and the EPA + Nano- curcumin and placebo groups [MD: 121.50 (1.09, 241.92)]. CONCLUSIONS The findings of the present study suggest that 12-week supplementation with EPA and Nano-curcumin may positively impact inflammation, oxidative stress, and metabolic parameters in patients with diabetes. The supplementation of EPA and Nano-curcumin may be a potential intervention to manage diabetes and reduce the risk of complications associated with diabetes. However, further research is needed to validate the study's findings and establish the long-term effects of EPA and Nano-curcumin supplementation in patients with diabetes.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the most common liver disease worldwide, is a spectrum of liver abnormalities ranging from steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) characterized by excessive lipid accumulation. The prevalence of NAFLD is predicted to increase rapidly, demanding novel approaches to reduce the global NAFLD burden. Flavonoids, the most abundant dietary polyphenols, can reduce the risk of NAFLD. The majority of dietary flavonoids are proanthocyanidins (PACs), which are oligomers and polymers of the flavonoid sub-group flavan-3-ols. The efficacy of PAC in reducing the NAFLD risk can be significantly hindered by low bioavailability. The development of synbiotics by combining PAC with probiotics may increase effectiveness against NAFLD by biotransforming PAC into bioavailable metabolites. PAC and probiotic bacteria are capable of mitigating steatosis primarily through suppressing de novo lipogenesis and promoting fatty acid β-oxidation. PAC and probiotic bacteria can reduce the progression of steatosis to NASH mainly through ameliorating hepatic damage and inflammation induced by hepatic oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and gut microbiota dysbiosis. Synbiotics of PAC are superior in reducing the risk of NAFLD compared to independent administration of PAC and probiotics. The development of PAC-based synbiotics can be a novel strategy to mitigate the increasing incidence of NAFLD.

Abstract
Background Broccoli is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants with broad health benefits, but its intake frequency and dose-response relationship with mortality risk remain unclear. Methods Using data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003-2006, 12,486 adults were included. Broccoli intake frequency was evaluated by a food frequency questionnaire, and all-cause and cause-specific mortality risks were followed up. The relationship between broccoli intake and mortality risk was analyzed using Cox models. Results Compared with never consumption of broccoli, different frequencies of broccoli consumption were associated with significantly decreased risks of all-cause mortality (p for trend <0.001). Consuming broccoli 1-2 times per week was associated with a 32-43% lower mortality risk. More frequent broccoli consumption was negatively correlated with cardiovascular and cancer mortality risks (p < 0.05). Consuming broccoli 1-2 times per week for males and ≥ 3 times per week for females could significantly reduce all-cause mortality risk. Conclusion Moderate and frequent consumption of broccoli may reduce the risks of all-cause and cause-specific mortality. Optimal intake frequencies may differ by gender.

Abstract
Changes in immunocompetent cells influence the course of diabetes mellitus and contribute to its complications. Thus, correction of diabetes-induced immune system disorders is vital for normalizing the state of the organism. Red wine polyphenols due to their biological activities could be considered a potential remedy for correcting diabetes. The study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial potential and the influence of red wine polyphenols on immune system in streptozotocin-induced diabetes. We studied immunological parameters, i.e. quantity of white blood cells in peripheral blood and peritoneal macrophages, the bactericidal activity of phagocytes of blood, the activity of myeloperoxidase, and the level of cationic proteins in these cells after the administration of the polyphenol-rich red wine concentrate (PC concentrate) of known composition, obtained from Ukrainian wine, for 14th day to rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. The Minimal Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of the PC concentrate was determined with the Broth Microdilution method. The PC concentrate normalized the quantity and functional activity of peripheral blood neutrophils and peritoneal macrophages, and decreased the quantity of lymphocytes under diabetes, as well as possessed the antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Our results indicate the significant biological potential of the PC concentrate and its therapeutic relevance to correct diabetes-induced disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes Mellitus is an endocrine disorder that will affect, about 693 million adults by 2045 worldwide, (>50% increase from 2017). The conventional treatment of the disease, include the oral hypoglycemic drugs which are given in combination with other drugs and are known to possess various adverse effects like gastrointestinal disturbance, nausea, water retention etc. PURPOSE: Due to the urgent need of combating this disorder without side effects, the alternative and complementary therapies should be explored due to their natural origins and comparable safety. Herbal sources serve as new leads, due to the presence of phytoconstituents with potential therapeutic properties, efficacy and safety. In this review, we tried to summarise the polyphenolic phytoconstituents effective in the treatment of diabetic complications. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted using 4 databases (Google scholar, Pubmed, Scopus, Embase) for the identification of relevant data. Search was performed using various key words such as "diabetes", "polyphenols", "marine sources","anti-diabetic polyphenols". The in vitro studies involving the cell lines used in diabetes and animal models were also considered for inclusion. Additional research papers were identified by reviewing abstracts, scrutinizing reference lists, and reviewing previously published review articles. RESULTS Polyphenols, a group of phytoconstituents are known worldwide for their tremendous antioxidant potential. So, various research groups have explored their mechanism and therapeutic value in diabetic complications, to improve the insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, in controlling the glycemic conditions. CONCLUSION Polyphenols exhibit effective therapeutic potential in managing diabetic complications through their multifaceted mechanism of action. They exhibit antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-glycemic properties, which collectively contribute to their beneficial effects in mitigating diabetic complications. Thus, the inclusion of polyphenols into the diet, may be cosidered as an approach of managing diabetes on long term basis. In this review, we have tried to identify polyphenols effective in diabetes and summarize their mechanism of action along with their potential, for the treatment of diabetic complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) is a whole millet grain that has been considered for improving the disorder of glucose and lipid metabolism. The purpose of the work is to explore the extraction and enrichment of polyphenols from foxtail millets which can regulate the disorder of glucose and lipid metabolism by increasing endogenous GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). RESULTS The optimum ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of foxtail millet polyphenols (FMPs) was as follows: 70 °C and 400 W and 70% ethanol concentration, further purification using macroporous resin. In vitro, the FMP eluent of 60% ethanol (FMP-60) has the best effect in promoting GLP-1 secretion from L cells among the different active components of FMP. Millet polyphenols (MPs) were obtained from finishing foxtail millet with the bran removed by the same extraction and purification method. Compared with MP-60, FMP-60 mainly included eight active phenolic constituents and contained more ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid, 2-hydroxycinnamic acid, and coniferaldehyde. After gavage treatment of diet-induced obese (DIO) mice with FMP-60, FMP-60 promoted endogenous GLP-1 secretion in mice and ameliorated disorders of glucolipid metabolism in DIO mice. CONCLUSION FMP-60 could improve glucose homeostasis and ameliorates metabolic disease by promoting the endogenous GLP-1 level and preventing weight gain in DIO mice. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Objective(s): Cardio-metabolic risk factors are becoming a global health concern. To address this problem, one of the proposed ways is to focus on phytochemical-rich foods consumption. Therefore, we aimed to summarize the results of observational studies (cohorts, case-control, and cross-sectional) that investigated the association between dietary phytochemical index (PI) as a new index for evaluating phytochemical-rich food intake and various risk factors of cardio-metabolic disorders. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive systematic review through PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. The literature search was performed up to August 2021 with no publication year restriction on observational studies investigating the association between PI and cardiometabolic risk factors on adults and children. A random-effect meta-analysis was used. Results: Overall, 16 articles (cross-sectional, case-control, cohort) were eligible for this systematic review and 8 studies with 99771 participants were included in the meta-analysis. Random effect meta-analysis showed that adherence to higher dietary PI decrease the odds of abdominal obesity (OR: 0.73, 95% CI: 0.58, 0.88, I2: 84.90), generalized obesity (OR: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.69, 0.98, I2: 68.10), hypertriglyceridemia (OR: 0.81, 95% CI: 0.73, 0.89, I2: 0.00), hypertension (OR: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.73, 0.99, I2: 7.02), and MetS (OR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.69, 0.88, I2: 84.90). However, results considering the associations between dietary PI with glycemic indices, and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were not significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: Evidence showed adverse associations between dietary PI and some cardio-metabolic risk factors such as obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, hypertension and metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
There is no research on the comparative effects of nutraceuticals on weight loss in adults with overweight or obesity. This study aimed at quantifying and ranking the effects of different nutraceuticals on weight loss. We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to November 2022. We included randomized trials evaluating the comparative effects of two or more nutraceuticals, or compared a nutraceutical against a placebo for weight loss in adults with overweight or obesity. We conducted random-effects network meta-analysis with a Frequentist framework to estimate mean difference [MD] and 95% confidence interval [CI] of the effect of nutraceuticals on weight loss. One hundred and eleven RCTs with 6171 participants that investigated the effects of 18 nutraceuticals on body weight were eligible. In the main analysis incorporating all trials, there was high certainty of evidence for supplementation of spirulina (MD: -1.77 kg, 95% CI: -2.77, -0.78) and moderate certainty of evidence that supplementation of curcumin (MD: -0.82 kg, 95% CI: -1.33, -0.30), psyllium (MD: -3.70 kg, 95% CI: -5.18, -2.22), chitosan (MD: -1.70 kg, 95% CI: -2.62, -0.78), and Nigella sativa (MD: -2.09 kg, 95%CI: -2.92, -1.26) could result in a small improvement in body weight. Supplementations with green tea (MD: -1.25 kg, 95%CI: -1.68, -0.82) and glucomannan (MD: -1.36 kg, 95%CI: -2.17, -0.54) demonstrated small weight loss, also the certainty of evidence was rated low. Based on our findings, supplementations with nutraceuticals can result in a small weight loss in adults with overweight or obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polyphenols are a class of naturally sourced compounds with widespread distribution and an extensive array of bioactivities. However, due to their complex constituents and weak absorption, a convincing explanation for their remarkable bioactivity remains elusive for a long time. In recent years, interaction with gut microbiota is hypothesized to be a reasonable explanation of the potential mechanisms for natural compounds especially polyphenols. OBJECTIVES This review aims to present a persuasive explanation for the contradiction between the limited bioavailability and the remarkable bioactivities of polyphenols by examining their interactions with gut microbiota. METHODS We assessed literatures published before April 10, 2023, from several databases, including Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. The keywords used include "polyphenols", "gut microbiota", "short-chain fatty acids", "bile acids", "trimethylamine N-oxide", "lipopolysaccharides" "tryptophan", "dopamine", "intestinal barrier", "central nervous system", "lung", "anthocyanin", "proanthocyanidin", "baicalein", "caffeic acid", "curcumin", "epigallocatechin-3-gallate", "ferulic acid", "genistein", "kaempferol", "luteolin", "myricetin", "naringenin", "procyanidins", "protocatechuic acid", "pterostilbene", "quercetin", "resveratrol", etc. RESULTS: The review first demonstrates that polyphenols significantly alter gut microbiota diversity (α- and β-diversity) and the abundance of specific microorganisms. Polyphenols either promote or inhibit microorganisms, with various factors influencing their effects, such as dosage, treatment duration, and chemical structure of polyphenols. Furthermore, the review reveals that polyphenols regulate several gut microbiota metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids, dopamine, trimethylamine N-oxide, bile acids, and lipopolysaccharides. Polyphenols affect these metabolites by altering gut microbiota composition, modifying microbial enzyme activity, and other potential mechanisms. The changed microbial metabolites induced by polyphenols subsequently trigger host responses in various ways, such as acting as intestinal acid-base homeostasis regulators and activating on specific target receptors. Additionally, polyphenols are transformed into microbial derivatives by gut microbiota and these polyphenols' microbial derivatives have many potential advantages (e.g., increased bioactivity, improved absorption). Lastly, the review shows polyphenols maintain intestinal barrier, central nervous system, and lung function homeostasis by regulating gut microbiota. CONCLUSION The interaction between polyphenols and gut microbiota provides a credible explanation for the exceptional bioactivities of polyphenols. This review aids our understanding of the underlying mechanisms behind the bioactivity of polyphenols.

Abstract
Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline. Mental disorders can also contribute to the development of diabetes through various mechanisms including increased stress, poor self-care behaviors, and adverse effects on glucose metabolism. Consequently, individuals suffering from either of these conditions frequently experience comorbidity with the other. Nutrition plays an important role in both diabetes and mental health disorders including depression and anxiety. Deficiencies in specific nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, B vitamins, zinc, chromium, magnesium, and selenium have been implicated in the pathogenesis of both diabetes and mental disorders. While the impact of nutrition on the progression and control of diabetes and mental disorders is broadly acknowledged, there is a notable knowledge gap concerning the implications of distinct nutrients in preventing and mitigating symptoms of both conditions when they coexist. The aim of this study was to examine the role of nutrition in improving glucose homeostasis and promoting mental well-being among individuals with diabetes. Further, we evaluated the preventive or delaying effects of key nutrients on the simultaneous manifestation of these conditions when one of them is present. Our findings indicated that the use of personalized dietary interventions and targeted nutrient supplementation can improve metabolic and mental health outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
The genus Eremophila, despite comprising more than 250 species, has scarce literature studies that could be traced concerning the chemical profile and bioactivity of Eremophila purpurascens. The current study targets the investigation of the in vitro and in vivo anti-oxidant, anti-hyperglycemic, and hepatoprotective potential of the polyphenol-rich leaf extract of E. purpurascens (EP). EP showed promising total anti-oxidant capacity with IC50 values of 106 and 114 μg/mL in 2,2'-azinobis [3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid]-diammonium salt (ABTS) and diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays, respectively, with total anti-oxidant capacities of 331, 245, and 1767 μmol/g in ABTS, DPPH, and ferric reducing anti-oxidant power assays, respectively. In HepG2 cells, pre-treated with CCl4, a dose of 100 μg/mL EP ameliorated the reduced superoxide dismutase and glutathione levels and total anti-oxidant capacity with values of 312.5 U/mL, 15.47 mg/dL, and 1.03 nmol/mL, respectively. In vitro anti-diabetic evaluation using 3T3-L1 adipocyte culture showed that at a dose of 30 μg/mL, the EP extract elicited a 6.3% decrease in the concentration of glucose (22.4 mmol/L), showing significant amelioration with regard to pioglitazone and insulin. EP also demonstrated elevated serum insulin by 77.78% with a marked reduction in fasting blood glucose level by 64.55% relative to the streptozotocin diabetic rats in vivo. EP also relieved the liver stress markers both in vitro in CCl4 and in vivo in tamoxifen (TAM) models. EP markedly decreased TAM toxicity, as demonstrated by the decline in the liver stress markers, ALT and AST, by 36.1 and 51.1%, respectively. It also relieved the oxidative stress triggered by TAM, as revealed by the reduction in the levels of TBARs and TNF-α by 21.4 and 40%, respectively. Liquid chromatography electrospray ionization mass spectrometry of EP revealed a total of twelve peaks belonging to phenylpropanoids, lignans, and phenolics, where verbascoside and pinoresinol-4-O-β-d-glucoside represented the most abundant secondary metabolites. The docking experiment showed that tri-O-galloyl-hexoside had the best fitting within the NADPH oxidase active sites with binding energy (ΔG = -81.12 kcal/mol). Thus, the plant can be of beneficial value in the control of hyperglycemia in diabetic patients, besides its prophylactic potential against hepatic complications.

Abstract
Supplementation with prebiotic polyphenol rutin is a potential dietary therapy for type 2 diabetes prevention in adults with obesity, based on previous glycaemic improvement in transgenic mouse models. Gut microbiota are hypothesised to underpin these effects. We investigated the effect of rutin supplementation on pancreatic β-cell function measured as C-peptide/glucose ratio, and 16S rRNA gene-based gut microbiota profiles, in a cohort of individuals with overweight plus normoglycaemia or prediabetes. Eighty-seven participants were enrolled, aged 18-65 years with BMI of 23-35 kg/m2. This was a 12-week double-blind randomised controlled trial (RCT), with 3 treatments comprising (i) placebo control, (ii) 500 mg/day encapsulated rutin, and (iii) 500 mg/day rutin-supplemented yoghurt. A 2-h oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed at baseline and at the end of the trial, with faecal samples also collected. Compliance with treatment was high (~90%), but rutin in both capsule and dietary format did not alter pancreatic β-cell response to OGTT over 12 weeks. Gut bacterial community composition also did not significantly change, with Firmicutes dominating irrespective of treatment. Fasting plasma glucose negatively correlated with the abundance of the butyrate producer Roseburia inulinivorans, known for its anti-inflammatory capacity. This is the first RCT to investigate postprandial pancreatic β-cell function in response to rutin supplementation.

Abstract
Background Obesity and overweight status increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Diet quality can also predict the risk of cardiovascular diseases in obese and overweight patients. Therefore, in this study, we sought to examine the relationship between diet quality index (DQI) and cardiometabolic risk factors in obese and overweight women. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted on 197 Iranian women with a Body Mass Index (BMI) > 25, 18-48 years, and recruited from 20 Tehran Health Centers. Nutrition intake and DQI were assessed using a 147-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Additionally, anthropometric measurements, body composition, biochemical evaluations, and cardiometabolic risk factors were evaluated. Results There was an association between DQI and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), and CHOLINDEX in obese women, after adjusting for potential confounders. Whereas, there were no significant associations of the tertiles of DQI compared with the first tertile in other cardiometabolic risk factors, before and after adjustment. Conclusion This study provides evidence that dietary intake and DQI are associated with cardiometabolic risk factors and that dietary modification may be a predictor for reducing WHR, AIP, and CHOLINDEX. However, more research is needed to develop a DQI that reflects changes in cardiometabolic risk factors by considering women's eating habits and patterns.

Abstract
The Mediterranean diet is recognized as one of the healthiest available dietary patterns. This perception results from its beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system and, also, on hypertension, diabetes, and cancer compared with other diets. Its impact on the course of diabetes is assessed in the available scientific literature; however, little information is available about its impact on diabetic retinopathy. The MD is characterized mainly by the consumption of fish, seafood, foods of plant origin, and fresh fruit and vegetables. It is also recommended to consume legumes, which are a source of folic acid, magnesium, iron, and dietary fiber. High consumption of nuts and unrefined grains is also recommended in the MD. Marine fish provide polyunsaturated acids from the omega-3 group. Olive oil plays a very important role, especially olive oil obtained from mechanical pressing. Additionally, olive oil contains vitamins E, K, and polyphenols. Polyphenols, which are present in a diverse range of vegetables, fruits, and seeds, have the ability to decrease oxidative stress, inflammation, and insulin resistance. Resveratrol is naturally found in grape skins and seeds, as well as in peanuts and berries, and is a constituent of red wine. Resveratrol can inhibit increased vascular leakage and loss of pericytes and regulate the level of VEGF protein in the retina, thus inhibiting the development of DR. Consumption of fruits, vegetables, fish, and olive oil may be correlated with a lower risk of diabetic retinopathy. This paper presents the definition of the Mediterranean diet and its influence on the course of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy.

Abstract
Nanotechnology is an emerging field with tremendous potential and usage of medicinal plants and green preparation of nanoparticles (NPs) is one of the widely explored areas. These have been shown to be effective against different biological activities such as diabetes mellitus, cancer, antioxidant, antimicrobial, etc. The current studies focus on the green synthesis of zinc NPs (ZnO NPs) from aqueous leaf extract of Murraya koenigii (MK). The synthesized Murraya koeingii zinc oxide NPs (MK ZnO NPs) were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive spectrum (EDS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The synthesized MK ZnO NPs were evaluated for their in vitro antidiabetic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic activity. They demonstrated significant antidiabetic and cytotoxic activity, as well as moderate free-radical scavenging and antibacterial activity.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) accounts for a global health problem. It is a complex disease as a result of the combination of environmental as well as genetic factors. Morbidity is still increasing across the world. One of the possibilities for the prevention and mitigation of the negative consequences of type 2 diabetes is a nutritional diet rich in bioactive compounds such as polyphenols. This review is focused on cyanidin-3-O-glucosidase (C3G), which belongs to the anthocyanins subclass, and its anti-diabetic properties. There are numerous pieces of evidence that C3G exerts positive effects on diabetic parameters, including in vitro and in vivo studies. It is involved in alleviating inflammation, reducing blood glucose, controlling postprandial hyperglycemia, and gene expression related to the development of T2D. C3G is one of the beneficial polyphenolic compounds that may help to overcome the public health problems associated with T2D.

Abstract
We are surrounded by factors called free radicals (FR), which attach to the molecules our body is made of, first among them the endothelium. Even though FR are to a certain extent a normal factor, nowadays we face an escalating increase in these biologically aggressive molecules. The escalating formation of FR is linked to the increased usage of man-made chemicals for personal care (toothpaste, shampoo, bubble bath, etc.), domestic laundry and dish-washer detergents, and also an ever wider usage of drugs (both prescription and over the counter), especially if they are to be used long-term (years). In addition, tobacco smoking, processed foods, pesticides, various chronic infectious microbes, nutritional deficiencies, lack of sun exposure, and, finally, with a markedly increasing impact, electromagnetic pollution (a terribly destructive factor), can increase the risk of cancer, as well as endothelial dysfunction, owing to the increased production of FR that they cause. All these factors create endothelial damage, but the organism may be able to repair such damage thanks to the intervention of the immune system supported by antioxidants. However, one other factor can perpetuate the state of inflammation, namely obesity and metabolic syndrome with associated hyperinsulinemia. In this review, the role of FR, with a special emphasis on their origin, and of antioxidants, is explored from the perspective of their role in causing atherosclerosis, in particular at the coronary level.

Abstract
Adansonia digitata L. fruit, also known as baobab, has been used traditionally throughout the world for its medicinal properties. Ethnopharmacological uses of various plant parts have been reported for hydration, antipyretic, antiparasitic, antitussive, and sudorific properties and also in the treatment of diarrhea and dysentery in many African countries. Several studies have revealed that in addition to these applications, baobab has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial activities. The health benefits of baobab have been attributed to its bioactive compounds, namely phenols, flavonoids, proanthocyanins, tannins, catechins, and carotenoids. Baobab fruit is also an important source of vitamin C and micronutrients, including zinc, potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium, and protein, which may reduce nutritional deficiencies. Despite scientific studies revealing that this fruit has a wide diversity of bioactive compounds with beneficial effects on health, there is a gap in the review of information about their mechanisms of action and critical analysis of clinical trials exploring, in particular, their effect on glycemia regulation. This work aims to present a current overview of the bioactive compounds, biological activities, and effects of A. digitata fruit on blood glucose, highlighting their potential mechanisms of action and effects on glycemia regulation, evaluated in recent animal and human trials.

Abstract
AIMS To explore the dose-response relationship of fruit and vegetable (F&V) intake and type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk in rural China. METHODS A total of 38798 adults were recruited from the Henan Rural Cohort Study. F&V intake was assessed by a validated food-frequency questionnaire. Logistic regression and restricted cubic splines analysis were conducted to calculate the odds ratio (OR) for T2D relative to F&V intake and investigate the dose-response relationship. RESULTS Higher intake of fruit or combined F&V was in connection with a lower risk of T2D, after adjusting for multiple confounders. After analyzing the dose-response relationship, we found that the odds of T2D decreased significantly with fruit consumption ≥ 260 g/day or F&V intake between 600 and 1000 g/day. And in subgroup analysis, we found that the negative correlation between fruit consumption and T2D was more pronounced in non-current smokers and non-current drinkers. CONCLUSIONS High intake of fruit alone or combined F&V is related to a reduced risk of T2D in rural China. Fruit intake ≥ 260 g/day and total F&V consumption of 600-1000 g/day should be encouraged to promote good health.

Abstract
Here, a comprehensive review of sugarcane industrialization and its relationship with bioactive compounds (BCs) detected in various products and by-products generated during its processing is presented. Furthermore, it is discussed how these compounds have revealed important antioxidant, antineoplastic, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial activities. From this bibliographic research highlights the significance of two types of BCs of natural origin (phenolic compounds (PCs) and terpenoids) and a group of compounds synthesized during industrial transformation processes (Maillard reaction products (MRPs)). It was found that most of the studies about the BCs from sugarcane have been conducted by identifying, isolating, and analyzing ones or a few compounds at a specific period, this being a conventional approach. However, given the complexity of the synthesis processes of all these BCs and the biological activities they can manifest in a specific biological context, novel approaches are needed to address these analyses holistically. To overcome this challenge, integrating massive and multiscale methods, such as omics sciences, seems necessary to enrich these studies. This work is intended to contribute to the state of the art that could support future research about the exploration, characterization, or evaluation of different bioactive molecules from sugarcane and its derivatives.

Abstract
Abstract
Among various diseases in humans, diabetes is one of the most complicated disorders resulting either from the malfunctioning of β cells, causing a poor discharge of insulin from them, or poor functioning of the liberated insulin. A wide array of chemical compounds so-called secondary metabolites are present in plants. These phytochemicals are produced as by-products of metabolism and play a key role in plant protection. However, in humans, they offer several beneficial functions. Polyphenols are an important class of phytochemicals and apart from fruits, they are also found in their major wastes mainly including the peel, pomace, and seed. The current review is aimed to focus on the potential sources, distribution, and extraction/isolation of polyphenols from major fruit wastes along with highlighting their medicinal and therapeutic benefits, especially in the management of diabetes.

Abstract
A rapid, easy and simple method for the isolation and purification of α-glucosidase inhibitors of the ethyl acetate extract of Thymelaea hirsuta (EaTh) by a combination of thin layer chromatography (TLC) and enzymatic test has been developed. EaTh was demonstrated previously a potent α-glucosidase inhibitory effect. In this study, we developed a simple TLC-enzymatic test (TLC/EZ) combination to isolate α-glucosidase inhibitors present in EaTh.EaTh was extracted by Soxhlet from Thymelaea hirsuta (T. hirsuta). The EaTh was separated on a silica gel column and then on a TLC plate. After TLC separation, the TLC/EZ combination method was applied. α-glucosidase inhibitors were detected directly in the TLC plate using the glucose oxidase peroxidase method (GOD-POD). A good detection of active compounds was obtained in the TLC favoring the TLC/EZ method. Active compounds were then characterized using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) analysis. The main α-glucosidase inhibitors present in EaTh have a molecular ion [M + H]+ at m/z = 543. This proposed method is suitable for a reliable isolation and purification of α-glucosidase inhibitors present in EaTh. It could be proposed as an interesting alternative of the classical method for the isolation and purification of α-glucosidase inhibitors in plant extracts.

Abstract
Bilberry leaves are used in many countries in traditional medicine for treating a wide variety of diseases. Due to the high therapeutic potential of Vaccinium myrtillus (VM) leaves, this review aims to present the latest knowledge on the phytochemical profile, as well as the therapeutic effects of this herbal drug. The review was conducted according to the Prisma guidelines, and the scientific databases were searched using combinations of the following keywords: "Vaccinium myrtillus", "leaves", "bilberry". Recent research was focused on the influence of abiotic factors on the phytochemical composition, and it seems that there are significant differences between the herbal drugs collected from different countries. The phytochemical composition is correlated with the broad spectrum of pharmacological effects. The paper outlines the potent antimicrobial activity of VM extracts against multidrug-resistant bacterial strains, and also the pathways that are modulated by the unique "cocktail" of phytoconstituents in different metabolic alterations. Reviewing the research articles published in the last 10 years, it seems that bilberry leaves have been slightly forgotten, although their phytochemical and pharmacological characteristics are unique.

Abstract
Polyphenols are secondary metabolites produced by plants, which contribute to the plant's defense against abiotic stress conditions (e.g., UV radiation and precipitation), the aggression of herbivores, and plant pathogens. Epidemiological studies suggest that long-term consumption of plant polyphenols protects against cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases. Their structural diversity has fascinated and confronted analytical chemists on how to carry out unambiguous identification, exhaustive recovery from plants and organic waste, and define their nutritional and biological potential. The food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries employ polyphenols from fruits and vegetables to produce additives, additional foods, and supplements. In some cases, nanocarriers have been used to protect polyphenols during food processing, to solve the issues related to low water solubility, to transport them to the site of action, and improve their bioavailability. This review summarizes the structure-bioactivity relationships, processing parameters that impact polyphenol stability and bioavailability, the research progress in nanocarrier delivery, and the most innovative methodologies for the exhaustive recovery of polyphenols from plant and agri-waste materials.
