Abstract
Objectives Dietary supplementation with branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), including leucine, isoleucine, and valine, has shown potential benefits for the metabolic profile. However, emerging population-based studies suggest that BCAAs may mediate pathways related to cardiometabolic risk factors, possibly due to their involvement in the dysregulation of insulin metabolic pathways. This study aimed to investigate the association between BCAAs intake and the odds of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in children and adolescents with overweight and obesity. Methods This cross-sectional study encompassed individuals aged 6 to 18 years with WHO body mass index (BMI)-for-age z-score ≥ 1. NAFLD diagnosis was done using an ultrasonography scan of the liver and gastroenterologist confirmation. Dietary BCAAs intake was assessed using a validated 147-item food frequency questionnaire. Logistic regression models, adjusted for potential confounders, were used to estimate the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of NAFLD across quartiles of BCAAs intake. Results A total of 505 (52.9% boys) with mean ± SD age and BMI-for-age-Z-score of 10.0 ± 2.3 and 2.70 ± 1.01, respectively, were enrolled. After adjusting for potential confounders, participants in the highest quartile of total dietary BCAAs (OR: 1.87;95%CI:1.06-3.28) and leucine (OR: 1.84;95%CI:1.03-3.29) intake had greater odds of developing NAFLD compared with those in the lowest quartile. There was no significant association between dietary valine and isoleucine intake and the odds of NAFLD. Conclusions The study findings suggest that increased dietary intake of BCAAs, particularly leucine, may have detrimental effects on the development of NAFLD.

Abstract
AIM We investigated the potential association between dietary mineral patterns and longitudinal change of glycemic status among individuals with prediabetes (Pre-DM). METHODS This study included 1456 individuals with Pre-DM (mean age of 47.2 ± 12.8, and 52.5% men) who participated in the third (2006-2008) and fourth (2009-2011) examinations of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS) that followed up until 2015-2017. The participants' habitual dietary intakes of minerals were assessed using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) at baseline. Principle factor analysis (PCA) identified three major mineral patterns (with a total variance of 92.3%), including multi-mineral (MM) (characterized by higher loads of phosphorous, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and copper), chromium-selenium (Cr-Se), and iron-manganese (Fe-Mn) patterns. Cox proportional hazard models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) and regression to normal glucose regulation (NGR) across tertile categories of mineral patterns score. RESULTS After a median follow-up of 5.8 years, the incidence rates of T2D and NGR was 23.8% and 46.8%, respectively. After adjustment of T2D risk score (i.e., composed of age, sex, family history of diabetes, history of gestational diabetes, body mass index, and physical activity level) and dietary confounders, Cr-Se and Fe-Mn patterns were associated with an increased chance of returning to NGR by 26% (HR = 1.26, 95% CI = 1.02-1.55) and 42% (HR = 1.42, 95% CI = 1.14-1.76), respectively. Fe-Mn pattern was also associated with a reduced risk of developing T2D (HR = 0.67, 95% CI = 0.49-0.92). CONCLUSION Our findings emphasize the potential benefits of dietary Fe-Mn and Cr-Se intakes in pre-diabetic individuals.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the association between the MIND index (Mediterranean- Dietary approaches to Stop Hypertension diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the Iranian children. It builds upon existing research that highlights the role of dietary antioxidants in alleviating psychological disorders, cognitive impairments, and memory deficits. Additionally, previous studies have separately explored the beneficial effects of the Mediterranean and DASH diets on these issues. A case-control study was undertaken in Iran, involving a sample of 360 children and adolescents aged 7-13 years. Participants were divided into two groups, namely the case group (n = 120) and the control group (n = 240), with age and sex being matched between the groups. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV-TR) was employed for the diagnosis of ADHD. The MIND diet score was computed using the food intake data acquired from the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) completed by the subjects. The mean ± SD for the age and BMI of the study population was 8.76 ± 1.64 years and 16.90 ± 3.58 kg/m2, respectively. The mean score of MIND in this study was 27.93. After adjustment for potential confounder in the final model, subjects in highest compared to the lowest quartile of MIND diet score had significantly lower odds of ADHD (OR = 0.59, 95% CI 0.37-0.83; P-trend = 0.019). This study provides valuable evidence suggesting that adherence to the MIND diet is associated with decreased odds of ADHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The consumption of soft carbonated drinks and other sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) has been identified as a risk factor for several chronic diseases. We aimed to ascertain the proportion of carbonated beverage and SSB consumption, as well as the associated factors, in Hamadan, a city in the west of Iran. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted on adults over 18 years old. To estimate the information related to the consumption of SSB, the standardized Iranian version of the FFQ questionnaire was used. The weekly consumption of four or more cups was considered to be high consumption. Multiple logistic regression was used for the identification of related factors of SSB. The results were reported at the 95% confidence level. RESULTS A total of 628 individuals were included in the study. The mean age of the participants was 38.05 (SD = 12.54), and 42.36% of the sample was male. The frequency (%) of high total SSB consumption was 321 (51.11%), with 95% CI: 47.20, 55.02. The high consumption was higher among males than females, 162 (60.90%) versus 159 (43.92%); p < 0.001, and among unmarried and married individuals was 54.88% and 50.55% respectively but the difference was not significant (p = 0.465). The odds of high SSB consumption were significantly lower for individuals of advanced age and female gender. In terms of socioeconomic status, the second, third, and fourth quartiles exhibited higher odds of high SSB consumption compared to the first quartile, with ORs of 1.64 (95% CI: 1.04, 2.60), 1.61 (95% CI: 1.01, 2.57), and 1.77 (95% CI: 1.09, 2.88), respectively. CONCLUSION Based on the results of this study the high sugar-sweetened beverage consumption was significant. The consumption among females and younger was lower than males and older people. It seems, that there is a significant negative association between female gender and age with SSB consumption, suggesting that males and older individuals tend to consume more sugar-sweetened beverages. On the other hand, socio-economic status was positively associated with SSB consumption, indicating that individuals with higher socio-economic status may have a higher intake of these beverages.

Abstract
Background: Socioeconomic status and lifestyle factors could potentially modify the association between diet and chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome (MetS). Objective: This study aimed to investigate the combined effect of socioeconomic status, lifestyle factors, and dietary patterns on the MetS risk. Methods: During 8.9 years of follow-up, dietary information of 1915 individuals was collected by a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Dietary patterns were derived using principal component analysis. Results: Two major dietary patterns including healthy dietary and Western dietary patterns were identified. In the crude and fully adjusted models, an association was not found between Western and healthy dietary patterns and the risk of MetS. There was a significant decrease in the risk of MetS among participants with higher levels of education who adhered to a healthy dietary pattern (hazard ratio: 0.71, 95% confidence interval: 0.34-0.89). Furthermore, the risk of MetS decreased in the fourth quartile of healthy dietary pattern among nonemployed (0.78, 0.51-0.94). According to the stratification of physical activity levels, it was shown that the healthy dietary pattern had a negative association with the risk of MetS only among participants who engaged in a high level of physical activity (0.70, 0.40-0.91). About the smoking status, it was shown that among non-smoker participants, higher adherence to a healthy dietary pattern was associated with a reduction in the risk of MetS. The risk of MetS reduced by 36% (0.64, 0.51-0.97) in the third quartile and by 39% (0.61, 0.54-0.95) in the fourth quartile of the healthy dietary pattern. No association was found between Western dietary pattern with MetS in different status of socioeconomic and lifestyle factors. Conclusions: Adhering to a healthy dietary pattern, engaging in regular physical activity, and abstaining from smoking could reduce incidents of MetS. Moreover, socioeconomic status modified the association between healthy dietary pattern and MetS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Portfolio Diet (PD) is a plant-based dietary approach that has been associated with a reduced risk of cancer-related mortality. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between PD score (PDS) and breast cancer (BC) risk in Iranian women, providing insights into the impact of diet on BC risk across different menopausal stages. METHODS The current case-control study included 133 women with newly diagnosed BC and 265 controls without any neoplastic disorders, all of whom were referred to the oncology department of two referral hospitals in Tehran, Iran. A validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, consisting of 168 food items, was used to gather dietary information. Additionally, odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated to assess the associations of BC with the PDS and its components, using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS After adjusting for variables in multivariate analysis, a significantly lower association was observed between each unit increase in plant protein intake and the odds of BC in the total population (OR = 0.399, 95% CI: 0.170-0.936). Based on menopausal status, a significant association was found between PDS and the odds of BC in premenopausal women (OR = 0.914, 95% CI: 0.845-0.989). Additionally, in the postmenopausal women, significantly lower odds of BC were observed with each unit increase in plant protein intake in the adjusted model (OR = 0.078, 95% CI: 0.015-0.399). CONCLUSIONS This study provides novel insights into the protective role of PD against BC, demonstrating that a higher PDS is associated with a significant reduction in BC odds among premenopausal women. Plant protein intake also demonstrated a protective effect against BC in both the overall population and postmenopausal women. These findings highlight the potential benefit of the PD as a preventative dietary strategy against BC, particularly emphasizing the role of plant protein.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since foods are consumed in combinations that also interact with other lifestyle variables such as body mass index(BMI) and physical activity, it is difficult to separate the role of single foods or a lifestyle variable alone in predicting the risk of chronic diseases such as metabolic disorders. Therefore, a suitable way to examine the combined effect of food consumption and its interaction with other lifestyle variables is to derive dietary patterns and lifestyle patterns using appropriate statistical methods. This study aimed to derive two dietary and lifestyle patterns related to hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance(IR) using reduced rank regression(RRR) analysis. METHODS The current study was conducted on 1063 individuals aged ≥ 25 years old of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study who have complete data on fasting blood sugar, plasma insulin, anthropometric variables, and nutritional intakes. Dietary intakes were collected using a food frequency questionnaire. Dietary and lifestyle patterns were identified via RRR analysis, using 34 food groups, BMI, smoking, and physical activity as predictor variables, and fasting serum insulin and HOMA-IR as response biomarkers. RESULTS RRR derived a dietary pattern with a higher intake of processed meat, doogh, pickles, lemon juices, fish, and a lower intake of starchy vegetables, garlic and onion, dried fruits, nuts, red meat, dairy products, and coffee as predictive variables for IR and hyperinsulinemia. Also, RRR derived a lifestyle pattern based on the above-mentioned dietary pattern and high BMI as response variables. In the final adjusted model of cross-sectional analysis, the odds of hyperinsulinemia(OR:1.23,95%CI:1.08-1.41,Ptrend=0.002) and IR(OR:1.52,95%CI:1.25-1.86,Ptrend<0.001) were elevated with increasing each quartile of RRR-derived dietary pattern score. Also, a higher adherence to RRR-derived lifestyle pattern was associated with higher odds of hyperinsulinemia(OR:2.49,95%CI:2.14-2.88,Ptrend<0.001) and IR(OR:3.20,95%CI:2.50-4.10,Ptrend<0.001). Moreover, after three years of follow-up, the risk of hyperinsulinemia(OR:1.30,95%CI:1.08-1.56,Ptrend=0.006) and IR(OR:1.26,95%CI:1.01-1.58,Ptrend=0.037) incidence were increased per each quartile increase of the RRR-derived lifestyle pattern. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggested that a dietary pattern and lifestyle with elevated BMI level, higher consumption of processed meat, doogh, pickles, lemon juices, and fish, and lower consumption of starchy vegetables, garlic and onion, dried fruits, nuts, red meat, dairy products, coffee may be associated with a higher risk of hyperinsulinemia and IR. It is suggested that further studies with a larger sample size and more extended follow-up duration, especially in other populations with different lifestyles and food habits be performed to confirm the findings of the current study.

Abstract
Lifestyle and dietary intake play a pivotal role in development of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD). We performed this cross-sectional study to evaluate the association between lifestyle and dietary insulinemic potential and odds of MAFLD in overweight and obese children and adolescents. The insulinemic potential of the diet and lifestyle was assessed by computing the scores of the empirical dietary index for hyperinsulinemia(EDIH), the empirical lifestyle index for hyperinsulinemia(ELIH), the empirical dietary index for insulin resistance(EDIR), and the empirical lifestyle index for insulin resistance(ELIR). MAFLD was diagnosed according to the consensus definitions. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by logistic regression. A total of 334 (49.1% boys) with mean ± SD age and BMI-for-age-Z-score of 9.3 ± 1.8 and 2.55 ± 0.69, respectively, were enrolled. After adjusting for all potential confounders, participants in the highest quartile of ELIH score had greater odds of developing MAFLD (OR:3.50;95%CI:1.49-8.22) compared with those in the lowest quartile. This association remained significant among boys and pubertal ones. However, no significant association between EDIH, EDIR, or ELIR and odds of MAFLD was found. Our study suggests that the collective insulinemic potential of dietary intake, BMI, and physical activity is associated with increased odds of MAFLD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study evaluated the association between plant-based diet index (PDI) and psychological symptoms, including depressive symptoms, stress, and anxiety among Iranian women diagnosed with migraine headaches. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted on 262 patients with migraine (aged 20-50 years; body mass index, 18.5-30 kg/m²). Three versions of the PDI were calculated: overall PDI, healthy PDI (hPDI), and unhealthy PDI (uPDI) based on dietary data collected via a 168-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Psychological symptoms, including depressive symptoms, anxiety, and stress, were assessed using the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) questionnaire. RESULTS After adjustment for potential confounders, patients in the highest tertile of the PDI showed a lower risk of depressive symptoms [odds ratio (OR) = 0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.22, 0.77]. Furthermore, inverse associations were evident between the PDI score and the risk of stress (OR = 0.46, 95% CI: 0.24, 0.85). DISCUSSION Higher adherence to a plant-based eating pattern is associated with a reduced risk of psychological symptoms. However, future longitudinal studies and clinical trials should replicate our observations and delineate the underlying mechanisms driving these associations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, obesity trends are a serious public health concern. Adolescent obesity is associated with cardiometabolic risk and metabolic disorders in adolescence and may persist into adulthood. The current study was designed to explore the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) in adolescents and its relationship with obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome (MetS), and some inflammatory biomarkers. METHODS A total of 90 adolescents with obesity and 90 adolescents with normal weight, participated in the study. Data from a validated 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire were used to calculate the DASH score. The association of DASH score with cardiometabolic risk factors was estimated using multivariable logistic regression models. To assess the correlation between the DASH score and dietary factor, the Pearson correlation coefficient (r) was used. RESULTS Adolescents with a high DASH score had significantly higher intakes of potassium, magnesium, vitamin C, and vitamin K and lower intakes of sodium compared with those with a low DASH score (P < 0.05 ). There were no significant differences in the DASH score and its components between adolescents with and without metabolic syndrome. Adolescents with metabolic syndrome had significantly higher concentrations of triglycerides, low HDL-C, and high blood pressure compared with those without metabolic syndrome (P < 0.05). There were no significant associations between DASH score and MetS and other cardiometabolic risk factors in crude and multivariate-adjusted models. In addition, the DASH score was positively associated with potassium, magnesium, sodium, vitamins D and C, docosahexaenoic acid, and soluble fiber (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION In the current study, there was no significant association between adherence to the DASH diet and odds of metabolic syndrome, and other cardiometabolic risk factors in adolescent. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings. TRIAL REGISTRATION Ethics approval was obtained from the research ethics committee of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences (IR.TBZMED.REC.1397.179.).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Households experiencing food insecurity may use dynamic strategies to meet food needs. Yet, the relationship between household food sourcing behaviors and food security, particularly in rural settings, is understudied. OBJECTIVE To identify food sourcing patterns and their associations with food insecurity among households in rural Appalachian Ohio during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN Survey data were collected from a cohort of households in Athens County, OH, in July 2020, October 2020, January 2021, and April 2021. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING The sample included 663 households with household food sourcing and food security information for ≥1 survey wave. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Household food sourcing patterns. Households reported the frequency with which they obtained food from various retailers and charitable sources, classified as supercenters, supermarkets, convenience stores, farmers markets, or charitable sources. STATISTICAL ANALYSES Principal component analysis was used to identify food sourcing patterns. Linear mixed models were used to assess changes in food sourcing behaviors over the study period and to determine whether food sourcing behaviors differed according to food security status. RESULTS Two patterns were identified: Convenience Stores and Charitable Food and Supermarkets and Farmers Markets, not Supercenters. Relative to July 2020, alignment of households' food sourcing behaviors with the Supermarkets and Farmers Markets, not Supercenters pattern was higher in October 2020 (β .07, 95% CI .02 to .12) and alignment with the Convenience Stores and Charitable Food pattern was lower in April 2021 (β -.06, 95% CI -.11 to -.02). Compared with food-secure households, food sourcing behaviors of food-insecure households were more closely aligned with the Convenience Stores and Charitable Food pattern (β .07, 95% CI .00 to .13); no statistically significant difference in scores was observed for the Supermarkets and Farmers Markets, not Supercenters pattern (β -.07, 95% CI -.15 to .02). CONCLUSIONS These findings support efforts to increase access to healthy, affordable options at venues where food-insecure households may be likely to obtain food, such as convenience stores and charitable sources.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS Bing eating disorder (BED) has been associated with a number of health problems. Remarkably little research has been done to measure dietary intake in people who suffer from binge eating disorder. This study aimed to compare the dietary intake and nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) between BED individuals and those without BED and also to investigate the association between BED and NAR. METHODS In this cross- sectional study, 180 overweight and obese females who aged between 19 and 50 years old and with BMI between 25 and 40 kg/m2 were interviewed. The women were categorized into BED and non- BED groups based on their earned score in Binge Eating Scale (BES) questionnaire. Nutritional adequacy ratio was assessed as Micronutrient adequacy ratio, Macronutrient adequacy ratio and total adequacy ratio (the sum of the previous two) based on last year's dietary intakes collected using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The odds of binge eating disorder across the nutritional adequacy scores were assessed using multiple logistic regression models. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. RESULTS About 41.6% (n = 75) of the subjects were diagnosed with BED. Carbohydrate, saturated fats, sugar levels were significantly higher in women with BED compared to non-BED women (P < 0.05). All vitamins, with the exception of Retinol, and all minerals' levels were significantly lower in BED participants (P < 0.05). Micronutrient adequacy score and total adequacy score differed significantly between individuals with and without BED (P < 0.001) and non- BED group were significantly more nutritional adequate. The odds of having BED were lower in micronutrient, macronutrient adequate individuals (OR = 0.87, 95% CI = 0.78-0.98, P = 0.02), (OR = 0.81, 95% CI = 0.66-0.99, P = 0.049) respectively. CONCLUSION Overall, the results demonstrate low intake of key micronutrients and high intake of saturated fatty acids and carbohydrates among binge sufferers. Also, the findings indicate that individuals with BED experience a notably lower nutrient adequacy ratio compared to their peers without the disorder, suggesting that the eating behaviors associated with BED such as high consumption of processed foods and diet with low quality may lead to inadequate intake of vital nutrients.

Abstract
Background Migraine is a disabling neurovascular disorder often associated with comorbidities such as mental health disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic syndromes. While certain dietary triggers have been identified, the impact of overall diet quality on migraine severity and frequency is not well understood. This study aimed to evaluate the association between diet quality, lifestyle factors, and the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) with migraine severity and frequency. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on 280 patients aged 18-50 years newly diagnosed with migraines. Dietary intake was assessed using a 147-item Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), and diet quality was evaluated using the Lifelines Diet Score (LLDS) and HEI. Migraine-related disability and severity were assessed using the Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) questionnaire and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), respectively. Logistic regression models were applied to examine the association between diet quality and migraine outcomes. Results Higher LLDS and HEI scores were significantly associated with reduced odds of migraine-related disability. Participants in the highest LLDS tertile had an odds ratio (OR) of 0.68 (95% CI: 0.42-0.96; p = 0.02) for migraine disability. Similarly, the highest HEI tertile was associated with an OR of 0.58 (95% CI: 0.41-0.88; p = 0.025). For pain intensity, the highest tertile of LLDS showed an OR of 0.55 (95% CI: 0.38-0.75; p = 0.026), while the HEI showed an OR of 0.62 (95% CI: 0.45-0.85; p = 0.03). Conclusion Higher diet quality, as measured by LLDS and HEI scores, is inversely associated with migraine severity and frequency. These findings suggest that dietary improvements may be a viable strategy for managing migraine symptoms.

This case-control study examined the association between the inflammatory potential of diet, as determined by the dietary inflammatory index (DII®), and RA risk in an Iranian population. The present Case-control study was conducted on 100 RA patients and 200 age- and sex-matched controls in Isfahan, Iran. The presence of RA was determined by expert Rheumatologist assessment based on the American College of Rheumatology definitions. A 168-item food frequency questionnaire was used to collect dietary intake from which DII scores were computed. Odds ratios (OR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) for the association between the DII, expressed in tertiles, and RA risk were estimated by two multivariable logistic regression models, one crude model and one in which we controlled for important potential confounders. In the crude model, individuals in the top DII tertile (most pro-inflammatory diet) had more than triple the risk of RA compared to those in the lowest tertile (ORtertile3vs1= 3.57; 95 % CI, 1.95-6.53; p< 0.001). The association was essentially unchanged after controlling for potential confounders (OR tertile3vs1 = 3.83; 95 % CI, 1.66-8.81; p<0.001). We found that a pro-inflammatory diet is associated with increased risk of RA. Higher volume studies are needed to confirm the results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a severe and rare inflammatory disease affecting the central nervous system through optic neuritis and transverse myelitis. Present study aimed to investigate the association between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and risk of NMOSD. METHODS In this case-control study, 30 NMOSD cases and 90 aged matched healthy individuals were recruited. Habitual dietary intakes were assessed by a validated 168-item food frequency questionnaire to calculate the DII score. A multiple adjusted regression was used to determine the odd ratio (OR) of NMOSD across DII tertiles. The Residual method was applied to adjust the energy intake. RESULTS Participants in the top of DII tertile were more likely to have NMOSD in the crude model compared to those with the lowest one (OR: 4.18; 95%CI: 1.43-12.21). It was the case when multivariable confounders were considered in adjustment model I (OR: 3.98; 95%CI: 1.34-11.82) and II (OR: 4.43; 95%CI: 1.36-14.38), such that, individuals with a greater DII score had 3.98 and 4.43-time higher risk of NMOSD in model I and II, respectively. CONCLUSION The Present study suggests that greater adherence to a pro-inflammatory diet may be associated with an increased risk of NMOSD.

Abstract
AIMS In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and mental health outcomes among patients with migraine headaches. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 262 subjects were included. The dietary intakes were collected using a validated 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Items were scored according to their inflammatory potential, so a higher DII indicated a more pro-inflammatory diet. The association between DII and the mental health of participants was investigated using multinomial logistic regression and odds ratio (OR) with a corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) was reported. RESULTS Overall, 224 women and 38 men, with a mean (standard error) DII of -2.96 (0.06), age of 36.1 (0.53) years, and BMI of 25.55 (0.21) kg/m2, comprised our study population. DII was positively associated with a higher risk of depression in patients with the highest adherence to a pro-inflammatory diet compared to those with the lowest adherence (OR = 1.76; 95%CI: 1.04, 3.00; Ptrend = 0.035). Adjustments for age, sex, marital status, smoking status, migraine headache index score, number of family members, mean arterial pressure, medication, physical activity, and BMI intensified the association in a way that the risk of depression was 2.03 times higher in patients with the highest adherence to a pro-inflammatory diet compared to those with the lowest adherence to a pro-inflammatory diet (OR = 2.03; 95%CI: 1.18, 3.49; Ptrend = 0.011). CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that depression was positively associated with adherence to a pro-inflammatory diet. However, no significant association was observed between anxiety and stress with DII.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been shown that chronic inflammation is a significant factor in cancer development and progression. The current study aimed to investigate whether a higher score on the empirical dietary inflammatory pattern (EDIP), which indicates a more pro-inflammatory diet, is related to higher odds of breast cancer in Iranian women. METHODS In the present case-control study, subjects in the case (n = 133) and control (n = 265) groups were chosen from the hospitals in Tehran, Iran. The cases consisted of women with newly diagnosed breast cancer, while the controls were selected from other parts of the same hospital and had no history of cancer or hormone therapy. Individuals whose reported energy intake deviated by three standard deviations above or below the mean energy intake of the population were excluded from the study. A reliable and valid semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to determine the participants' dietary intake. Additionally, the association between breast cancer and EDIP was evaluated by logistic regression analysis in both crude and adjusted models. RESULTS The median scores of EDIP in the case and control groups were 0.65 and 0.61, respectively. The findings also indicated that, in the adjusted model, the odds of developing breast cancer significantly increased in the last tertile of EDIP compared to the first tertile (odds ratio (OR) = 1.859; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.059-3.265; P = 0.031). Additionally, after adjusting for potential confounders, higher odds of breast cancer were observed in the last tertile of EDIP compared to the first tertile in postmenopausal women (OR = 2.516; 95% CI: 1.081-5.856; P = 0.033). CONCLUSIONS The current study indicated that individuals with a higher pro-inflammatory diet score were more likely to develop breast cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adequate dietary consumption of calcium is crucial in the preservation of bone health and the prevention of osteoporosis. This study investigated the prevalence of insufficient dietary calcium intake among individuals aged ≥50 years in Iran. METHODS We analyzed data from the Iranian Multicenter Osteoporosis Study (IMOS-2021). Participants aged 50 years and older completed a 168-item food frequency questionnaire. Insufficient dietary calcium intake was characterized as a daily calcium intake of <1000 mg for men aged 50-70 years, and <1200 mg for men over 70 years and women over 50 years and older. Stata v17 statistical software facilitated a survey set analysis to estimate the population's mean and median dietary calcium intake and the prevalence of insufficient dietary calcium intake. RESULTS The study included 1450 participants with a mean age of 60.7±7.9 years. The estimated mean dietary calcium intake in Iran was 1062.7 mg/day (95% CI: 1029.6-1095.8), with a median intake of 943.5 mg/d (95% CI: 910.5-976.4). The prevalence of insufficient dietary calcium intake in Iran was estimated to be 62.9% (95% CI: 60.0%-65.7%). Notably, the prevalence was higher among women at 75.5% (95% CI: 71.9%-78.8%), compared to men at 47.8% (95% CI: 43.4%-52.3%) with a significant difference (P<0.001). In age-related findings, individuals aged 65 years and older had a higher prevalence of insufficient intake, at 69.0% (95% CI: 63.9%-74.0%), versus those under 65 years, at 60.3% (95% CI: 56.9%-63.8%), with this difference being statistically significant (P = 0.007). Furthermore, a significant inverse relationship was identified between both educational years and socioeconomic status and the prevalence of insufficient dietary calcium intake (Ps for trends<0.001). CONCLUSION Our findings revealed a significant prevalence of insufficient dietary calcium intake in women and those aged 65 and older. We advocate for targeted public health strategies to ensure sufficient dietary calcium intake across these populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A few studies have examined the association between different types of dietary fiber as well as their sources and the risk of breast cancer (BC) and the present study aimed to investigate these associations in a case-control study among Iranian women. METHODS A total of 464 women with pathologically confirmed breast cancer within the past year and 498 age-matched healthy controls were included. Dietary intakes were assessed using a 168-item food frequency questionnaire. The association between dietary soluble, insoluble, total dietary fiber, as well as, fiber from fruits, vegetables, legumes, cereals, and nuts intake with odds of breast cancer was assessed using multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Mean total dietary fiber intake of patients with and without cancer were 33.1 ± 15.3 g per day (g/d) and 34.2 ± 16.5 (g/d), respectively. Dietary total fiber (OR = 0.65; 95%CI: 0.47-0.90, Ptrend = 0.01), insoluble fiber (OR = 0.68; 95%CI: 0.49-0.93, Ptrend = 0.01), fruits' fiber (OR = 0.68; 95%CI: 0.49-0.94, Ptrend = 0.02), and vegetables' fiber (OR = 0.66; 95%CI: 0.48-0.91, Ptrend = 0.01) were significantly associated with reduced likelihood of developing breast cancer in all participants. Furthermore, dietary total and insoluble fiber, as well as, fiber from fruits were significantly associated with lower odds of breast cancer in premenopausal women (P < 0.05). In contrast, cereals' fiber significantly increased the risk of breast cancer by 84% in premenopausal women (OR = 1.84; 95%CI: 1.18-2.86, Ptrend = 0.009). In postmenopausal women, cereals' fiber had a significant inverse association with odds of breast cancer (OR = 0.56; 95%CI: 0.31-1.03, Ptrend = 0.04). Also, fiber from vegetables was significantly associated with a lower risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women (OR = 0.53; 95%CI: 0.30-0.94, Ptrend = 0.03). CONCLUSION Dietary fiber intake and more specifically insoluble, fruits', and vegetables' fiber intake might be associated with a reduced breast cancer risk, particularly in premenopausal women. Future prospective investigations are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The relationship between dietary patterns and cirrhosis is undeniable. The present study aimed to investigate the association between the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and the risk of mortality in patients with cirrhosis prospectively. METHODS In this cohort study, 121 cirrhotic patients were enrolled and followed up annually for four years. Nutritional status and dietary intakes were assessed initially, and the DASH score was calculated accordingly. Crude and multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using Cox proportional hazard analyses. RESULTS DASH components including fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds, and low-fat dairy products were significantly associated with lower mortality risk in cirrhotic patients. Also, a higher DASH score was significantly associated with a reduction in the risk of mortality in patients with cirrhosis, so that after adjusting for all confounders, the risk of mortality in the upper tertile was 89% lower than the first tertile (HR = 0.11, 95% CI: 0.03-0.42, P trend < 0.001). The 4-year survival rate among patients across tertiles of DASH was 32%, 37%, and 46%, respectively (P = 0.005). CONCLUSION It can be concluded that a higher DASH diet score may be associated with a reduced risk of mortality in cirrhotic patients. However, larger studies are needed to confirm the findings and determine their potential mechanisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited information exists linking food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores with anthropometric indices and happiness levels. Our aim was to examine the association between food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores with anthropometric indices and happiness levels in the Iranian population. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 200 students randomly selected from a university in Iran. Dietary intakes, physical activity (PA), and happiness levels of study participants were assessed using validated questionnaires. The anthropometric indices examined in this study included the body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), and abdominal volume index (AVI). Multiple logistic regression models were used to examine the association between food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores with anthropometric indices and happiness levels. RESULTS The mean age and body mass index (BMI) of study participants were 23.5 years ± 4.52 and 23.8 kg/m2 ± 3.17, respectively. In the study population, no significant association was seen between ABSI, BRI, AVI and happiness with food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores respectively. After adjusting for potential confounders (age, energy intake, marital status, education, smoking, physical activity, gender, and BMI), the association remained not significant for ABSI and food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores respectively (OR: 0.56, 95% CI (0.25-1.34), P = 0.193; OR: 0.59, 95% CI (0.22-1.57), P = 0.413; OR:1.19, 95%CI (0.54-2.63), P = 0.652), BRI and food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores respectively (OR:1.98, 95% CI (0.41-9.49), P = 0.381; OR: 0.57, 95%CI (0.12-2.74), P = 0.512; OR: 1.19, 95% CI (0.3-4.71), P = 0.811), AVI and food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores (OR:1.15, 95% CI (0.53-2.48), P = 0.743, OR:1.01, 95% CI (0.47-2.18), P = 0.965; OR: 1.3, 95% CI (0.64-2.65), P = 0.465) and happiness and food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores respectively (OR:0.3, 95%CI (0.07-1.25), P = 0.972; OR: 0.77, 95%CI (0.18-3.19), P = 0.724, OR: 0.3, 95% CI (0.07-1.25), P = 0.083). CONCLUSIONS No significant association was detected between food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores with anthropometric indices and happiness levels. However, longitudinal studies are required to confirm these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS Dietary potassium can play an important role in decreasing inflammatory factors as a protective factor for cancers. In this case-control study, we aimed to assess the possible association between dietary potassium intake and the risk of breast cancer (BC) among Iranian adult women. METHODS The present case-control study was conducted at Shohada and Imam Hossain hospitals, in Tehran. The study included 134 newly diagnosed cases of BC and 267 controls. A validated semi-quantitative 168-item food frequency questionnaire was used to compute the potassium intake. Logistic regression, adjusted for potential confounders, was used to estimate odds ratios(ORs) and 95% confidence intervals(CI) of BC according to tertiles of potassium intake. RESULTS The mean(M) ± standard deviation(SD) of age and body mass index (BMI) were 47.9 ± 10.3 years and 29.4 ± 5.5 kg/m2, respectively. Also, the M ± SD of potassium intake for the control and case groups was 1616 ± 293 and 1542 ± 338 (mg/1000 Kcal), respectively. In the multivariable-adjusted model for potential confounders, the higher total potassium intake was associated with decreased odds of BC (OR: 0.35, 95%CI: 0.19-0.62, P for trend < 0.001). Moreover, an inverse relationship was observed between potassium from plant sources (OR: 0.39, 95%CI: 0.22-0.69, P for trend = 0.001) and fruit and vegetable sources (OR: 0.49, 95%CI: 0.28-0.87, P for trend = 0.016) and odds of BC. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggested that diet rich in potassium may have a predictive role to reduce the odds of BC.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated condition of the central nervous system (CNS). Intake of fruits and vegetables high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and active molecules contributes to the body's overall health, immunity, and physiological function. This study sought to review the literature and investigate the relationship between fruits and vegetables consumption and MS odds. METHODS In the current systematic review and meta-analysis, a systematic search of original databases from inception to 21 Dec 2022 was conducted based on the PRISMA 2020 statement. Human observational studies examining the association between fruits or vegetables consumption and MS prevalence were included if they reported and provided effect size with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS The systematic review and meta-analysis included eight studies. Random effect model showed the protective effect of fruits (I2 = 81.0%, P for heterogeneity < 0.001; pooled OR = 0.52, 95%CI = 0.27, 0.97, P-value = 0.042) and vegetables consumption (I2 = 73.5%, P for heterogeneity = 0.002; pooled OR = 0.61, 95%CI = 0.38, 1.00, P-value = 0.050) on MS odds. According to a linear dose-response meta-analysis of four case-control studies, an increase of 100 grams of fruits per day reduced the odds of MS by 9% (I2 = 0.0%, P for heterogeneity = 0.77; pooled OR = 0.91, 95%CI = 0.83, 0.99, P-value = 0.021). CONCLUSION Consumption of fruits and vegetables may be associated with a potential protective effect against MS. However, further confirmation is required through prospective longitudinal studies and randomized clinical trials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the association between ultra-processed food (UPF) and the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS), as well as to assess whether fruit and vegetable intake and weight change modify this association. METHODS We included 1915 healthy participants who participated in the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS), all of whom had complete demographic, anthropometric, and dietary measurements. A validated food frequency questionnaire was used to assess UPF consumption based on the NOVA classification system. MetS was defined according to the Joint Interim Statement. Multivariable adjusted Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for MetS events across tertiles of UPF. The effect of fruit and vegetable consumption and weight change on this association was assessed using joint classification by Cox regression. RESULTS UFP consumption showed no association with MetS risk after adjusting for confounders. However, after adjustment for dietary fiber, fruits, and vegetables, the highest tertile of UPF consumption was positively linked to MetS risk, compared to the lowest tertile. There was a significant interaction between fruit, vegetable, and dietary fiber intake and UPF consumption concerning the risk of MetS (All P values < 0.05). Among individuals consuming less than 248 g/day of fruit, the risk of MetS increased by 54% (confidence interval: 1.13-2.10) in the highest UPF tertile. Consuming vegetables and dietary fiber below the median (258 g/day and 42.2 g/day, respectively) increased the risk of MetS in the third tertile of UPF. However, consuming vegetables and fiber ≥ median intake, reduced the risk of MetS among those with the lowest UPF consumption. Furthermore, the risk of MetS was observed in the third tertile of UPF consumption among individuals with fruit and vegetable consumption < 537 g/day. UPF consumption was not associated with the risk of MetS in different weight change statuses. CONCLUSIONS Consuming more fruits and vegetables mitigated the adverse effect of UPF on the risk of developing MetS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this prospective study, we aimed to examine the association between ultra-processed foods and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and to evaluate the effect of lifestyle and socioeconomic factors on this association. METHODS This study included 1766 adults (aged 18 to 78, 54.3% women), who took part in the Tehran Lipid and Glucose study. The Short-Form 12-Item Health Survey version 2 was used to determine HRQoL, which includes the physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) scores. Ultra-processed food consumption was assessed using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Lifestyle (physical activity and smoking status) and socioeconomic factors (education level and employment status) were also determined. General linear models (GLM) were applied to estimate the mean (95% confidence interval) for MCS and PCS scores across the ultra-processed foods tertiles. Additionally, the effect of lifestyle and socioeconomic factors on the relationship between ultra-processed foods and HRQoL was examined using GLM. RESULTS The median consumption of ultra-processed foods was 11.9% (IQR: 8.2 to 16.8) of total energy intake. There was a significant inverse association between ultra-processed foods consumption and PCS, but not MCS, after adjustment for confounding factors. Significant interactions were observed between ultra-processed food consumption, sex, and occupation on PCS score (all P values < 0.001). The interaction test tended to be significant for smoking status, education levels, and physical activity levels. As ultra-processed food consumption increased, the PCS score significantly decreased in women (P = 0.043), low physical active subjects (P = 0.014), smokers (P = 0.015), and lower-educated individuals (P = 0.022). Non-employed individuals with higher ultra-processed food intake showed a decline in their PCS and MCS scores. While there was no significant difference in MCS score among different strata of lifestyle and socioeconomic status across tertiles of ultra-processed foods. CONCLUSIONS Higher intake of ultra-processed foods was associated with poorer physical health, particularly among women, those with unhealthy lifestyles, and low socioeconomic conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Regarding the role of insulin and insulin-inducing dietary factors in some cancers' etiology, we hypothesized that the risk of colorectal cancer may be lessened by following a lower carbohydrate and insulinogenic diet. Therefore, we performed this study to explore the association between a low-carbohydrate diet and insulin indices and the odds of colorectal cancer. METHOD This hospital-based case-control study was conducted on 150 newly diagnosed colorectal cancer patients and 300 healthy age- and sex-matched hospitalized controls. A valid and reliable food frequency questionnaire was used to calculate the insulin indices and low-carbohydrate diet score. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate the association between insulin indices and low-carbohydrate diet and the odds of colorectal cancer. RESULT After adjusting for potential confounders, individuals in the highest tertile of insulin indices had a higher risk of colorectal cancer (OR insulin index = 3.46; 95% CI, 2.00-5.96; OR insulin load = 2; 95% CI, 1.17-3.41). No association was found between a low-carbohydrate diet and colorectal cancer (OR = 1.55; 95% CI, 0.85-2.84). CONCLUSION Current results demonstrated that a high insulinemic diet was associated with a higher risk of colorectal cancer.

Abstract
Aim The present study was conducted to analyze the publications of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS) and assess its scientific productions during the last 23 years. Methods The required data were retrieved from the Scopus database. The advanced search was chosen, and the search query included terms related to the TLGS. Search and retrieval of data were conducted on August 30, 2022. Bibliometric indicators have been used at three levels in this research including the level of documents, journals, and authors. Also, the knowledge structure of this set was analyzed at the level of social structure and the level of conceptual structure. Data analysis and visualizations was performed using Bibliometrix and VOSviewer software. Results A total of 870 documents related to the TLGS have been indexed in the Scopus from 2000 to 2022, and 1148 authors have participated in the relevant studies. 66.4% of the TLGS documents were published in journals with Q1 subject area quartiles. There was an annual growth rate of 20% and average citations per document of 16.5. There was a co-authorship per document of 5.6 and an international co-authorship of 8.7%. According to the co-occurrence network for keywords, the most common areas in the TLGS published documents were nutrition, epidemiologic issues, cardiometabolic-related biomarkers, diabetes, hypertension, lifestyle variables and genetic studies. Conclusion Over the past 23 years, the TLGS has successfully addressed a wide range of inquiries pertaining to cardiometabolic and nutritional issues in Iran. The remarkable achievements of the TLGS act as a catalyst, advocating for the planning and implementation of additional cohort studies that specifically focus on non-communicable diseases within the Iranian population.

Abstract
Although previous research has explored the link between plant-based diets and mental health outcomes, there has been limited study on the quality levels of plant foods in this context. This study was conducted on 733 adolescent girls from cities in northeastern Iran. The validated Iranian version of the Insomnia Severity Index, SF-12v2 questionnaire and Persian version of the Beck Depression Inventory used to assess insomnia and poor quality of life (QoL) and depression, respectively. Dietary intakes assessed using a valid and reliable food frequency questionnaire. The association of scores of plant based dietary index (PDI) and poor QoL, depression and insomnia explored by binary logistic regression. The unadjusted model showed subjects in the highest quartile of healthy PDI had lower chances of insomnia than those in the lowest quartile (OR: 0.50; 95% CI 0.27-0.91, P = 0.024). The association persisted across various adjusted models. Subjects in the highest quartile of unhealthy PDI (uPDI) had higher chances of depression than those in the lowest quartile (OR: 1.83; 95% CI 1.09-3.08, P = 0.022). The significance of the association was maintained after adjusting for other confounders. A healthy plant-based dietary index is associated with a lower odds of insomnia. An unhealthy plant-based dietary index was associated to an increased chance of depression. Findings need to be confirmed by future studies.

Abstract
Background Diseases and disorders related to mental health are spreading like other chronic diseases all around the world. Considering the role of food in the prevention and treatment of these disorders, including major depression, investigating the relationship between different food patterns and this disorder is of particular importance. The aim of this study was to compare Dutch healthy eating and healthy eating indexes and anthropometry in patients with major depression with healthy individuals. Methods In this case-control study, the final analysis was performed on 67 men and 111 women with an age range of 20-30 years. Height (cm), weight (kg), food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), physical activity (MET-min/week), demographic and PHQ-9 questionnaires were taken from all participants. In the following, all the food ingredients and their components were extracted and used to calculate HEI-2015 and DHD. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software with independent t-test, logistic regression and chi-square. Results It was found that people with major depression in this study were mostly women and occupied. The average HEI-2015 in healthy people and those with major depression was 58 and 54.3, respectively. Also, the average DHD in these people was 60.5 and 55, respectively. HEI-2015 and DHD had a significant negative correlation with depression score (r = -0.16, p-value = 0.03) (r = -0.19, p-value = 0.01). Also, in the logistic regression model, before and even after adjusting confounders, HEI-2015 and DHD had a reduced odds ratio in people suffering from major depression. The two groups did not differ significantly in terms of the average factors of height, weight and body mass index (BMI). Conclusion It seems that HEI2015 and DHD have a significant relationship in reducing major depression. However, due to the small number of studies in this regard, especially in the field of DHD, the need for more studies seems necessary.

Abstract
Background This study examines the association between micronutrient intake, anthropometric indices, lipid accumulation, and blood lipid risk index among Tehranian women. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on 556 Tehranian women. Dietary intake was measured using a Food Frequency Questionnaire. Biochemical assessment and anthropometric indices were measured, and demographic information and physical activity were collected. Results Participants with the highest intake of carbohydrates were more prone to obesity. Conversely, those in the top tertile for protein intake had a lower likelihood of obesity and higher levels of lipid accumulation product (LAP). The highest fat consumers had a 63% decreased chance of having a high Castelli's Risk Index 1 (CRI-1). A higher glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) were linked to an increased probability of a high atherogenic coefficient (AC). Women in the top tertile of GL were significantly more likely to be obese and had lower odds for high LAP. Participants in the top tertile of aromatic amino acids/branched chain amino acids (AAA/BCAA) had significantly lower chances of high CRI-1 and a high atherogenic index of plasma (AIP). Those in the highest tertile of monounsaturated fatty acids/polyunsaturated fatty acids (MUFA/PUFA) had lower odds of obesity and high AIP. Conclusions The amount of carbohydrate (g) and protein intake (%), dietary GL, and the ratio of MUFA to PUFA were associated with obesity. The amount of fat intake (g) and AAA/BCAA indices were associated with CRI-1. LAP decreased with an increase in GL. AC increased with an increase in GI and GL. AAA/BCAA and MUFA/PUFA were associated with AIP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There has been emerging attention to investigate the possible role of some dietary factors in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD); however, evidence about the relationship between dietary components and the risk of PD is limited. The aim of this study was to determine the association between major dietary patterns and the risk of PD. METHODS This case-control study was performed on 105 patients with newly diagnosed PD and 215 healthy controls. Diagnosis of Parkinson's disease was made based on the UK Brain Bank criteria. Usual dietary intakes were collected by a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Dietary patterns were detected by principal component analysis. RESULTS Four dietary patterns, including traditional, healthy, western, and light dietary patterns, were identified. After considering all potential confounders, individuals with the highest tertile of traditional dietary pattern scores had a lower risk of PD than those with the lowest tertile (OR: 0.002; 95% CI: 0.000-0.016). A similar inverse association between the healthy pattern (OR: 0.314; 95% CI: 0.131-0.750) and light pattern (OR: 0.282; 95% CI: 0.121-0.654) and risk of PD was revealed. In contrast, adherence to the western dietary pattern was associated with PD incidence (OR: 7.26; 95% CI: 2.76-19.09). CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study suggest that adherence to western dietary pattern could increase the risk of PD by approximately seven times. However, the traditional, healthy, and light dietary patterns had an inverse relationship with PD risk.

Abstract
The present prospective cohort study aimed to determine whether dietary antioxidants were associated with incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Another objective was to find out whether such associations could be modified by the BMI status. A total of 2188 Tehranian adults aged 21-84 years, free of T2DM with the validated FFQ, was entered in the study. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models adjusting for confounders were used to assess the association between dietary antioxidants and incident T2DM in total population, as well as in subjects with various BMI statuses. During 8·9 (8·1-9·6) years of follow-up, dietary vitamin E significantly decreased the incident T2DM, after adjustment for confounders. However, other dietary antioxidants were not shown to be significantly associated with incident T2DM. The interaction between dietary vitamin E, Mg and BMI status was found to influence the risk of T2DM (Pfor interaction < 0·05). After stratification of subjects based on BMI status, it was found that vitamin E and Mg decreased the risk of T2DM only among normal-weight individual. Also, an inverse association was found among dietary vitamin C, dietary Zn and the risk of T2DM in individuals with normal weight but not in overweight and obese individuals; however, the interaction test tended to be significant for these dietary variables. Dietary antioxidants including vitamin E, vitamin C, Zn and Mg when accompanied by healthy weight, may bring benefits to the prevention of T2DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCMP) is characterized by the enlargement and weakening of the heart and is a major cause of heart failure in children. Infection and nutritional deficiencies are culprits for DCMP. Zinc is an important nutrient for human health due to its anti-oxidant effect that protects cell against oxidative damage. This case-control study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary intake of zinc and selenium and the risk of DCMP in pediatric patients. METHODS A total of 36 DCMP patients and 72 matched controls were recruited, and their dietary intakes were assessed via a validated food frequency questionnaire. We used chi-square and sample T-test for qualitative and quantitative variables, respectively. Logistic regression analysis was applied to assess the relationship between selenium and zinc intake with the risk of DCMP. RESULTS After fully adjusting for confounding factors, analyses showed that selenium (OR = 0.19, CI = 0.057-0.069, P trend < 0.011) and zinc (OR = 0.12, CI = 0.035-0.046, P trend < 0.002) intake were strongly associated with 81% and 88% lower risk of pediatric DCMP, respectively. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights the protective role of adequate dietary intake of selenium and zinc in decreasing the risk of DCMP in children. Malnutrition may exacerbate the condition and addressing these micronutrient deficiencies may improve the cardiac function. Further studies are recommended to detect the underlying mechanisms and dietary recommendations for DCMP prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of death worldwide, although limited data are currently available regarding the impact of consuming ultra-processed food (UPF) on its incidence. Given the increased consumption of UPF in Iran, we aimed to investigate the association between UPF intake and CVD risk. METHODS Individuals without CVD (n = 2050) aged ≥ 30 years old were recruited from the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS). Dietary data were collected using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and UPF intakes were assessed based on the Nova food classification. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for potential confounders were used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for the risk of CVD across tertiles of UPF intake. RESULTS A 10.1% incidence of CVD occurred over a median follow-up of 10.6 years, with a 22% increase in CVD risk per each 50 g/day UPF intake. Participants with the highest intake of UPF had a 68% greater incidence of CVD compared to those with the lowest intake (HR = 1.68, 95% CI=1.14-2.48) after controlling for potential confounders. Regarding sub-groups of UPF, participants in the 3rd tertile compared to the reference had a significantly increased risk of CVD (HR = 1.56, 95% CI=1.04-2.34). Nevertheless, intake of bread, fast food, sweetened beverages, sweets and desserts, high-fat dairy products, and other UPFs were not associated with greater CVD risk. CONCLUSION Our findings support the hypothesis that the incidence of CVD is enhanced with the higher consumption of UPF in a representative sample of the Iranian population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary patterns, encompassing an overall view of individuals' dietary intake, are suggested as a suitable means of assessing nutrition's role in chronic disease development. The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity and reproducibility of a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) designed for use in the Prospective Epidemiological Research Studies in IrAN (PERSIAN), by comparing major dietary patterns assessed by the FFQ with a reference method. METHODS Study participants included men and women who enrolled in the PERSIAN Cohort Study at seven of the eighteen centers. These centers were chosen to include dietary variations observed among the different Iranian ethnic populations. Two FFQ were completed for each participant over a one-year study period (FFQ1 upon enrollment and FFQ2 at the end of the study), with 24 interviewer-administered 24-hour dietary recalls (24 h) being completed monthly in between. Spearman correlation coefficients (SCC) were used comparing FFQs 1 and 2 to the 24 h to assess validity, while FFQ1 was compared to FFQ2 to assess reproducibility of the questionnaire. RESULTS Three major dietary patterns-Healthy, Low Protein/High Carb and Unhealthy-were identified, accounting for 70% of variance in the study population. Corrected SCC ranged from 0.31 to 0.61 in the validity and from 0.34 to 0.57 in reproducibility analyses, with the first two patterns, which accounted for over 50% of population variance, correlated at above 0.5 in both parameters, showing acceptable findings. CONCLUSIONS The PERSIAN Cohort FFQ is suitable for identification of major dietary patterns in the populations it is used for, in order to assess diet-disease relationships.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Celiac disease (CD) is a systemic and autoimmune enteropathy of the gastrointestinal tract with malabsorption characteristics. The only effective treatment for CD is adhere strictly to a gluten-free diet (GFD) throughout life. We evaluated the dietary patterns in celiac disease patients and their association with dietary intakes and anthropometric measurements in Iran. SUBJECTS/METHODS This is a case-control study on 182 participants who were referred to the Khuzestan Celiac Association, Iran. Nutritional information was collected using a validated 147-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The software Stata (StataCorp, Version 14.0) was used to analyze the data. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to obtain participants' dietary patterns. RESULTS A significant relationship was observed between age and body mass index (BMI) across quartiles of the healthy dietary pattern score (P < 0.001, P = 0.001, and P = 0.001, respectively), indicating that as age and BMI increased, participants demonstrated greater adherence to the healthy dietary pattern. Individuals with the highest adherence to the healthy dietary pattern had the lowest odds ratio for celiac disease (CD) (Q1: reference; Q2: 1.96, 95% CI: 0.84-4.55; Q3: 0.61, 95% CI: 0.27-1.42; Q4: 0.10, 95% CI: 0.03-0.33, P trend < 0.001), and this association remained significant after adjusting for BMI (adjusted P trend = 0.003) and energy intake (adjusted P trend < 0.001). Moreover, there was a significant association between the lowest odds ratio for CD and the highest adherence to the unhealthy dietary pattern after adjustment for energy intake (Q1: reference; Q2: 0.38, 95% CI: 0.13-1.12; Q3: 0.21, 95% CI: 0.06-0.71; Q4: 0.07, 95% CI: 0.02-0.29, adjusted P trend < 0.001). Additionally, a significant association was observed between the odds ratio for CD and the mixed dietary pattern score (Q1: reference; Q2: 6.01, 95% CI: 2.29-15.72; Q3: 2.47, 95% CI: 0.93-6.55; Q4: 4.84, 95% CI: 1.84-12.66, P trend = 0.02), and this association remained significant after adjustment for energy intake (adjusted P trend < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The findings of the present study indicate that individuals who adhere to healthy dietary patterns have a lower incidence of celiac disease.

Abstract
Considering that interventions related to lifestyle, especially nutrition have been proposed as the first line of prevention and treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and regarding the proven relationship between PCOS and inflammation, the present study was designed to find out the possible association of Diet Inflammatory Index (DII) with the inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein (CRP) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6), and compare the obtained results in PCOS and non-PCOS women. This case-control study was conducted on 45 PCOS and 40 non-PCOS women. Food intake and DII were measured using a 147-item Food Frequency Questionnaire. All participants were tested for the serum levels of IL-6 and CRP. Finally, the obtained results were compared between the two groups of PCOS and non-PCOS women. Significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of age, menstrual status and number of pregnancies (P < 0.05). Comparison of DII values showed no significant difference between the two groups of women (P = 0.68), but IL-6 was significantly higher in the PCOS group than in the control group (4.94 ± 1.97 vs. 3.48 ± 1.77, P < 0.001). Also in terms of CRP, no significant difference was observed between the two groups (P > 0.05). The difference of DII between the case and control groups were not significant and Pearson's correlation test did not show a significant correlation between DII and IL-6 (P˃0.05). This result can be due to the influence of several factors affecting the determination of DII such as education level, health status, physical activity level, age, and calorie intake. It seems that diet, especially consumption of more carbohydrates plays a role in causing chronic inflammation, as well as the occurrence and exacerbation of PCOS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence from recent studies suggested that variation in the quantity and quality of macronutrients in the diet may potentially play a role in predicting the risk of breast cancer (BC). In the current study, we aimed to assess the association of different high-protein diet scores and replacing fats and carbohydrate (CHO) with protein in the diet with the BC risk among Iranian women. METHODS The current hospital-based case-control study was conducted on 401 participants, aged ≥ 30 years old, including 134 women in the case group who had been diagnosed with histologically confirmed BC and 267 women in the control group. Dietary intake data was collected using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and high protein diet scores were determined. Logistic regression models were used to determine the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of BC across tertiles of high protein diet scores. Also, we assessed how substituting protein with other macronutrients affected BC odds while adjusting for the various confounding variables. RESULTS Participants' mean ± SD of age and body mass index were 47.9 ± 10.3 years and 29.4 ± 5.5 kg/m2, respectively. The scores of high-protein-low-CHO and fat diet, high-protein and CHO-low-fat diet, and high-protein and fat-low-CHO diet in participants were 16.5 ± 3.8, 16.5 ± 6.7, and 16.4 ± 5.9, respectively. In the multivariable model, individuals in the highest tertile of high-protein-low-CHO and fat diet score (OR:0.71;95%CI:0.56-0.90) and high-protein and CHO-low-fat diet (OR:0.76;95%CI:0.60-0.97) had lower odds of BC compared to those in the lowest tertile (P < 0.05). However, no significant association was found between high-protein and fat-low-CHO diet and BC risk. Our results showed that replacing fat by protein (ORdifferences:-0.40;95%CI:-0.73,-0.07) and also replacing refined-CHO by plant protein (ORdifferences:-0.66;95%CI:-1.26,-0.07) in the diet are associated inversely with risk of BC(P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The results of our study suggested that higher adherence to a high-protein-low-CHO and fat diet, characterized by a higher intake of plant proteins and a lower intake of refined grains and saturated fat can play a protective role against the odds of BC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is one of the leading public health issues in the world with a reported prevalence of nearly 25% in the past decades in Iran. The present research aimed to identify the association between the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) and MetS components among female teachers. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 97 female teachers aged 31-57 years were enrolled from 2018 to 2019 in Qom, Iran. Usual dietary intakes were assessed using a validated 168-item Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). HEI-2015 was calculated according to the consumption of whole fruits, vegetables, protein foods, beans, seafood, plant proteins, total and refined grain, dairy, fatty acid ratio, saturated fats, added sugars, and sodium. We also measured anthropometric and biochemical parameters. To evaluate the association between HEI-2015 and MetS, multivariate logistic regression was performed. RESULTS MetS was found in 59.8% of participants. Total HEI-2015 scores were significantly lower in participants with MetS compared to those without MetS (59.69 ± 8.98 vs. 64.21 ± 8.71, respectively; p = 0.02). Daily energy intake, weight, body mass index, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, serum triglyceride, and fasting blood sugar levels were higher in women with MetS (all p < 0.05). Higher HEI-2015 total scores (OR: 0.94; 95% CI: 0.89-0.99; p = 0.02) and scores of total vegetables (OR: 0.62; 95% CI: 0.42-0.91; p = 0.02), dark green vegetables and beans (OR: 0.62; 95% CI: 0.39-0.98; p = 0.04), fatty acid ratio (OR: 0.83; 95% CI: 0.68-0.99; p = 0.04), refined grain (OR: 0.86; 95% CI: 0.75-0.99; p = 0.04), and added sugars (OR: 0.44; 95% CI: 0.26-0.75; p = 0.002) were all associated with lower odds of having MetS. CONCLUSIONS Higher HEI-2015 scores, particularly in total vegetables, dark green vegetables, beans, and fatty acid ratio, as well as refined grain and added sugars were found to be associated with reduced odds of having MetS among Iranian female teachers. However, further prospective studies are required to confirm this finding.

INTRODUCTION Given the role of type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance in tumor initiation, we hypothesized that following a diet that reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes could also reduce the risk of breast cancer. Herein, we conducted a case-control study to investigate the association between dietary diabetes risk reduction score and breast cancer risk in Iranian women. METHOD We recruited 136 newly diagnosed cases and 272 age-matched hospitalized controls from referral hospitals. A valid and reliable 168-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to collect the data on dietary intake. We used Multivariate Logistic regression to assess the odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) of breast cancer by the dietary diabetes risk reduction score tertiles. RESULTS After adjusting for confounding variables, no association was seen between dietary diabetes risk reduction score and breast cancer risk (OR = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.37-1.14). However, after stratification by menopausal status, a decreased risk was observed between adherence to dietary diabetes risk reduction score and breast cancer risk in postmenopausal individuals (OR = 0.43, 95% CI: 0.19-0.99). CONCLUSION The present study states that there is no significant relationship between the dietary diabetes risk reduction score and the risk of breast cancer. However, adherence to dietary diabetes risk reduction score could have a preventive role for breast cancer among postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Diet is one of the main factors influencing pregnancy outcomes. Maternal and child health both seem to be related to dietary patterns. So far, no study on dietary pattern has been performed on pregnant women and its association with pregnancy outcomes in Rasht. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the association between dietary patterns and pregnancy outcomes in Rasht. In this cross-sectional study, 300 healthy pregnant women were included from three public hospitals in Rasht. Data on demographic, dietary intake, physical activity (PA), and anthropometric measurements of mothers were recorded. Outcomes of newborns were also gathered. Dietary patterns were identified using principal component analysis. General linear model was used for data analysis. Prior to pregnancy, only 40% of women had a normal body mass index (BMI). More than half of them (52.3%) had a gestational weight gain in excess of the guidelines. The dominant dietary patterns among pregnant women were traditional, Western, and healthy, respectively. High adherence to the Western pattern had a direct association with gestational weight gain (B = 1.48, p = .046) and inverse association with birth length (B = -0.71, p = .043). However, the results did not remain significant after adjusting for covariates. The present study indicated that several factors can affect the association of the Western diet with pregnancy outcomes. Therefore, making policies for interventional programs to improve maternal lifestyle factors along with their diet quality is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescence is a key time for the development of depression symptoms and the diet quality may be associated with mental health conditions. The present study examined the association between depression and quality of life (QoL) and the global diet quality score (GDQS) as a simple and standardized metric diet quality in Iranian adolescents. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted on 733 adolescent girls recruited using a random cluster sampling method. A 147-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used for dietary intake assessment. The GDQS is gained by summing points of all the 25 food groups, ranged from 0 to 49. Depression symptoms were assessed using a Persian version of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). For assessment of health-related QoL, the Short Form 12 Survey-version 2 (SF-12v2) questionnaire was employed. Multivariable logistic regression examined the association of depression and QoL with GDQS in crude and adjusted models. RESULTS Adolescent girls in the highest tertile of GDQS score compared with the lowest tertile had a 41% lower odds of depressive symptoms (OR: 0.59; 95% CI: 0.39-0.90, P = 0.01). The participants in the third tertile of GDQS score had lower odds of poor QoL compared with the first tertile (OR: 0.56; 95% CI: 0.37-0.85, P < 0.01). These associations remained significant (both P = 0.01) after adjustment for age, energy intake, body mass index (BMI), physical activity, and menstruation (depressive symptoms: OR: 0.59; 95% CI: 0.38-0.92; QoL: OR: 0.59; 95% CI: 0.38-0.91, P = 0.01). CONCLUSION We found that adolescent girls with a higher score of the GDQS had lower odds of depression and poor QoL Prospective and interventional investigations are needed to reach a clear vision.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum insulin levels and insulin sensitivity can impact mental disorders. This study investigates the association of the insulinemic potential of diet calculated using the empirical dietary indices for insulin resistance (EDIR) and hyperinsulinemia (EDIH) with psychological disorders, including depression, anxiety, and stress. METHODS This cross-sectional study was undertaken on 5405 individuals, aged 20-70, from the Yazd Health Study (YaHS). The food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to collect dietary intakes. EDIR and EDIH were calculated from the FFQ data. Psychological disorders were assessed by an Iranian-validated version of the depression, anxiety, and stress scale questionnaire 21 (DASS 21). Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed and odds ratio (OR) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) were reported. RESULTS The mean ± SD of EDIR and EDIH were 0.32 ± 0.17 and 0.11 ± 0.08 in the total population, respectively. In the final adjusted model, participants in the highest versus the lowest quartile of EDIR had statistically higher odds of depression (OR: 1.28; 95 % CI: 1.01-1.62, P-trend = 0.032). However, no statistically significant association was observed between the EDIH score and depression. Also, EDIR and EDIH scores were not significantly associated with the odds of anxiety and stress. LIMITATIONS The cross-sectional design of the study prevented the inference of causality. CONCLUSIONS Higher adherence to EDIR was positively associated with depression, but there was no significant association between EDIH and depression. EDIR and EDIH were also not significantly related to anxiety or stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary advanced glycation end products (AGEs) can play an important role in increasing inflammatory factors and oxidative stress as risk factors for cancers. In the present study, we aimed to assess the relationship between dietary AGEs and the risk of breast cancer (BC) in Iranian adult women. METHODS This hospital-based case-control study includes 401 participants aged ≥ 30 years old. The cases group consisted of 134 women diagnosed with histologically confirmed BC. The control group included 267 women enrolled randomly from patients admitted to the same hospitals. Dietary intake information was determined using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and dietary AGEs intake was computed for all participants. Logistic regression models, adjusted for potential confounders, were used to determine the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of BC across tertiles of dietary AGEs. RESULTS The mean ± SD age and body mass index of the study population were 47.92 ± 10.33 years and 29.43 ± 5.51 kg/m2, respectively. The median (interquartile) of dietary AGEs in all individuals was 9251(7450, 11,818) kU/day. After adjusting for age, first pregnancy age, and energy intake, participants in the highest tertile of dietary AGEs intakes had higher odds of BC compared to those in the lowest tertile of dietary AGEs (OR:2.29;95%CI:1.19-4.39, Ptrend:0.012). Additionally, in the multivariable model, after adjusting for age, age at first pregnancy, energy, menopausal status, family history of cancer, anti-inflammatory drug use, Vitamin D supplementation, physical activity, body mass index, number of childbirths, and history of abortion, breastfeeding, and oral contraceptive pills use, the odds of BC were increased across tertiles of dietary AGEs intake (OR: 2.33; 95%CI: 1.18-4.60, Ptrend: 0.017). CONCLUSION The present findings suggest that a diet with high AGEs is associated with a higher likelihood of BC in adult women.

Abstract
Background: There is increasing evidence supporting the association between dietary acid load and metabolic syndrome (MetS) components. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are rare and inconsistent studies to examine the association of dietary acid load and MetS score. The aim of this research was to assess dietary acid loads as measured by potential renal acid load (PRAL) in relation to MetS. Methods: The current study involved 246 overweight or obese women. Dietary assessment was performed using a validated 147-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Remer's equation was used to calculate PRAL score. MetS was defined as the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP)/Adult Treatment Panel ΙΙΙ (ATP). Multivariable logistic regression models were used to find the association between PRAL score and MetS. Results: The mean age and BMI of participants were 36.49±8.38 years old and 31.04±4.31 kg/m2, respectively. Overall, 32 percent of participants had MetS. According to the final model, although not statistically significant, there was a trend which suggested that being in the highest quartile of adherence to dietary acid load, evaluated by PRAL score, compared to the lowest quartile was associated with higher odds of MetS [(OR: 2.80; 95% CI: 0.95-8.26), (P=0.06)]. Conclusions: Our study shows a borderline non-significant association between PRAL and odds of MetS in overweight or obese women. However, definitive clarification of this relationship requires future intervention studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this prospective cohort study, we aimed to evaluate the association between dietary carbohydrates, whole grains, refined grains, and simple sugar with the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and assess the effect of weight change on these associations. METHODS This study was conducted within the framework of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS). We included 1915 healthy participants with complete demographic, anthropometric and dietary measurements, among whom 591 developed MetS during 8.9 years of follow-up. Intake of dietary carbohydrates, whole grains, refined grains, and simple sugar was assessed with a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Multivariable adjusted Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for MetS events across tertiles of dietary variables. Using joint classification, the effect of weight change on the association between dietary variables and risk of MetS was assessed by Cox regression. RESULTS Carbohydrate intake was not associated with the risk of MetS in multivariable-adjusted models. Whole grains intake was inversely associated with the risk of MetS (HR: 0.78, CI: 0.63-0.98), while this association disappeared after adjustment for weight change. The risk of MetS increased by 11% (1.11, 1.09-1.14) for each 3% energy increment from simple sugar, and by 5% (1.05, 1.03-1.08) for each 1 serving/day increment in refined grains. Consumption of refined grains increased the risk of MetS; an effect modification of this association was found by weight change. Among subjects with weight loss, intake of refined grains < median intake decreased the risk of MetS (0.59, 0.41-0.87). However, consumption of refined grains ≥ median intake increased the risk of MetS in individuals with weight gain (1.47, 1.08-2.01). Simple sugar was positively associated with an increased risk of MetS, after adjustment for weight change (3.00, 2.37-3.82). In joint classification, intake of simple sugar greater than median intake increased the risk of MetS, independent of weight change. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest an effect modification by weight change on the association between carbohydrates, and refined grains intake and the risk of MetS. Weight loss along with lower consumption of carbohydrates, and refined grains reduced the risk of MetS. However, simple sugar intake, regardless of weight change, was associated with an increased risk of MetS.

Dietary quality index and the risk of breast cancer: a case-control study. BMC Womens Health 2023; 23:469. Abstract
BACKGROUND Diet quality is a significant determinant in the etiology of breast cancer (BrCa), but further studies are required to explore this relationship. Therefore, we tried to assess if diet quality, assessed using the Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I), was related to BrCa among the Iranian population. METHODS In the present case-control research, 134 women with a recent diagnosis of BrCa and 267 without BrCa were selected as case and control groups. Individual food intake data from a food frequency questionnaire was used to compute DQI-I. Also, the multivariable logistic regression models were utilized to evaluate the association between DQI-I and BrCa odds . RESULTS We found a significant association between the last tertile of DQI-I and BrCa odds in the fully adjusted model (odds ratio (OR) = 0.30; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.15-0.56). The subgroup analysis based on menopausal status also showed a significant decrease in BrCa odds in pre-and post-menopausal women (pre-menopausal: OR = 0.27; 95% CI: 0.10-0.70 - post-menopausal status: OR = 0.35; 95% CI: 0.13-0.92). CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicated that a higher DQI-I score was related to a lower chance of BrCa. According to our research, a healthy diet pattern is crucial for BrCa prevention.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the association between dietary acid load (DAL) and multiple sclerosis (MS), through the potential renal acid load (PRAL) and net endogenous acid production (NEAP) scores. In a hospital-based case-control study of 109 patients with MS and 130 healthy individuals, a validated 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and a logistic regression model were used to evaluate the association between the DAL and MS. After adjusting for age (years), gender (male/female), body mass index (Kg/m2), and total calories (Kcal), the MS odds were 92% lower for those in the highest tertile of total plant-based protein (OR: 0.08, 95%CI: 0.03, 0.23; p-value < 0.001) and about four times higher for those in the highest tertile of the PRAL (OR: 4.16, 95%CI: 1.94, 8.91; p-value < 0.001) and NEAP scores (OR: 3.57, 95%CI: 1.69, 7.53; p-value < 0.001), compared to those in the lowest tertile. After further adjusting for sodium, saturated fatty acid, and fiber intake, the results remained significant for total plant-based protein intake (OR: 0.07, 95%CI: 0.01, 0.38; p-value = 0.002). In conclusion, a higher NEAP or PRAL score may be associated with increased odds of MS, while a higher intake of plant-based protein instead of animal-based protein may be protective.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the association between the dietary antioxidant quality score (DAQS) and the severity of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The present case-control study was carried out on 295 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 (≥18 years old), including 104 critical patients (Intensive care unit [ICU] admission) and 191 COVID-19 patients without severe complications (Non-intensive care unit [Non-ICU] patients) as cases. Dietary intake was assessed by a 147-item, semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Logistic regression was performed to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the considered risk factors. Our outcomes (after multivariate adjustment) suggested that higher adherence to DAQS was significantly associated with a decreased risk of COVID-19 infection severity (OR = 0.12; 95% CI: 0.04-0.29, p < 0.001). Similar results were seen when analyzed by sex [men (OR = 0.02; 95% CI: 0.002-0.15, p < 0.001) and women (OR = 0.21; 95% CI: 0.06-0.68, p = 0.012)]. A significant association between vitamin D3 intake and decreased risk of COVID-19 severity (OR = 0.91; 95% CI: 0.89-0.94, p < 0.001) was also observed. Moreover, multivariate results revealed that there were no significant associations between vitamin C (OR = 1.00; 95% CI: 0.99-1.00, p = 0.067), vitamin E (OR = 0.98; 95% CI: 0.86-1.11, p = 0.798), zinc (OR = 1.02; 95% CI: 0.86-1.20, p = 0.805), and selenium (OR = 0.99; 95% CI: 0.99-1.00, p = 0.077) intakes with the risk of COVID-19 severity. However, subgroup analyses by sex suggested a significant association between vitamin C intake and the risk of COVID-19 infection severity in women (OR = 1.00; 95% CI: 1.00-1.00, p = 0.028). Our findings showed a negative association between DAQS adherence and the risk of COVID-19 infection severity. Our results may be used to develop potential dietary therapies to decrease COVID-19 severity.

Abstract
Consumption of phytochemical-rich foods relates to the prevention of chronic diseases. In this study we assessed the dietary phytochemical index (PI) in metabolic parameters, liver enzymes, and severity of fibrosis among nonalcoholic fatty liver disease patients. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 210 patients with NAFLD. Fibrosis-4 index (FLB4), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease fibrosis score (NFS), FBS, lipids profile, AST, ALT, ALP, and GGT were measured. PI was calculated through the information obtained from a validated semi-quantitative food frequency. Multiple regression models were used to estimate mean difference changes in the evaluated variables associated with various dietary PI. Participants' mean ± SD of age and BMI were 39.23 ± 10.52 and 24.40 ± 2.64, respectively. We found that DPI is inversely associated with serum TG, TC, and LDL-C and directly associated with serum HDL-C and a higher score in DPI is associated with lower scores in NFS and FIB-4. Multivariate linear regression showed that there is an inverse association between DPI and AST, ALT, ALP, GGT, NFS, and FIB-4. Higher dietary PI could impact on reduction of NAFLD progression and improvement of metabolic parameters.
