Abstract
(1) Objectives: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to summarize current evidence regarding the prognostic role of perineural invasion (PNI) in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). (2) Methods: We searched Cochrane Central, ProQuest, PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Web of Science, using relevant keywords to identify eligible articles. Two independent reviewers conducted two-stage screening, data extraction, and quality assessment. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) criteria. All analyses were performed using comprehensive meta-analysis (CMA; version 3.3.070) software. (3) Results: The study included 101 published articles encompassing 26,062 patients. The pooled analyses showed that PNI was associated with significantly worse overall survival (OS; HR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.32-1.58; p < 0.001), worse disease-specific survival (DSS; HR = 1.87, 95% CI: 1.65-2.12; p < 0.001), and worse disease-free survival (DFS; HR = 1.87, 95% CI: 1.65-2.12; p < 0.001). Similarly, both local recurrence-free survival (LRFS) and regional recurrence-free survival (RRFS) were worse in patients with PNI (HR = 2.31, 95% CI: 1.72-3.10, p < 0.001; and HR = 2.04, 95% CI: 1.51-2.74, p < 0.001), respectively. The random-effect estimate of three studies demonstrated that the presence of PNI was associated with worse failure-free survival (FFS; HR = 2.59, 95% CI: 1.12-5.98, p < 0.001). (4) Conclusions: The current evidence suggests that PNI can be used as an independent predictor of the prognosis for patients with OSCC. The presence of PNI was associated with worse OS, DFS, DSS, FFS, and with recurrence. Asian patients and patients with extra-tumoral or peripheral PNI invasion were associated with worse prognosis.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has infected approximately fifty percent of humans for a long period of time. However, improvements in the public health environment have led to a decreased chance of H. pylori infection. However, a high infection rate is noted in populations with a high incidence rate of gastric cancer (GC). The worldwide fraction of GC attributable to H. pylori is greater than 85%, and a high H. pylori prevalence is noted in gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma patients. These results indicate that the majority of GC cases can be prevented if H. pylori infection is eliminated. Because H. pylori exhibits oral-oral or fecal-oral transmission, the relationship between this microorganism and other digestive tract malignant diseases has also attracted attention. This review article provides an overview of H. pylori and the condition of the whole gastrointestinal tract environment to further understand the correlation between the pathogen and the host, thus allowing improved realization of disease presentation.

Abstract
Prognosis prediction of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with mandibular invasion is controversial, and a more sophisticated staging system to aid prognosis could be developed with imaging characteristics of bone invasion. Imaging-feature analysis provides practical, stratified results for survival prognosis in oral SCC (OSCC) of the mandible, and imaging advances enable more detailed tumor visualization. We retrospectively evaluated significant bone-invasion features associated with poor outcomes in mandibular OSCC to assess the predictive value of staging criteria that combined imaging features and histologic grade (combined imaging–histology (IH) grade) in 65 patients (39 men, 26 women) with mandibular SCC diagnosed from 2006 to 2016. Clinicopathologic features, including T-stage and histologic grade, and prognosis were retrieved. Tumors were classified into three types by extent of mandibular invasion on pretreatment imaging studies. Moreover, we assessed the involvement of the mandibular canal. We examined the correlation of factors associated with locoregional recurrence and overall mortality. The Harrell Concordance Index (C-index) determined prognostic performance of predictors. Nineteen (29%) patients showed locoregional recurrence and 13 (20%) died. For locoregional recurrence and mortality rates, imaging-detected mandibular canal (MC) involvement is a stronger prognostic factor for recurrence (C-index = 0.61 > 0.58) and survival (C-index = 0.58 > 0.63) than histopathologically confirmed perineural invasion, as was the IH grade, especially IH Grade 3, which was significantly associated with worse locoregional recurrence (p < 0.02). Imaging-based staging showed higher prognostic performance than T-staging (C-index = 0.57 (recurrence), 0.60 (death)), when combined with histologic grading (C-index = 0.69 for both) or used alone (C-index = 0.63 (locoregional recurrence), 0.69 (death)). Overall survival was significantly stratified by Imaging type and IH grade. Therefore, analysis of imaging features provided more specific, practical results for survival prognosis in mandibular OSCC. Imaging advances can potentially provide detailed gross views of tumor masses to facilitate development of prognostic criteria for OSCC.

Abstract
Enlargement of the mandibular canal is a rare radiological finding. Clinically, it may or may not be associated with sensory deficits. We report four cases of widening of the mandibular canal observed with various methods of imaging with different clinical characteristics. We describe this unique radiological finding and elaborate the importance of quality assessment of the imaging that is vital for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. Clinicians should be mindful when assessing the imaging whenever the size of the mandibular canal is implicated. The case ranged from a benign tumor to malignancy, radiological errors, and artifacts. A more superior imaging or treatment modality was necessary to ascertain the diagnosis.

Abstract
This study critically assessed the possibility of tumour spread along the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) and its sensitivity as an intraoperative marker for clear bony margin control in frozen section during segmental mandibulectomy. Fifteen patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) involving the mandible and requiring a segmental mandibulectomy were included in this prospective trial. The ends of the IAN were analyzed using quick section analysis and the results compared with those of the definite pathological report. Nerve tissue could be identified in 25 of the 27 specimens collected. No specimen revealed tumour invasion. All histological diagnoses were finally confirmed. Three positive bony margins with microscopic carcinoma infiltrates were found, whereas corresponding nerve tissue did not confirm tumour invasion. This study supports the assumption that the pattern of tumour invasion is rarely primarily along the IAN in OSCC involving the mandible. Quick section analysis of the nerve tissue alone is therefore not a valid marker for intraoperative bony margin control. However, it can be used as an additional intraoperative diagnostic tool combined with other methods in rare cases of primary tumour spread along the IAN. A review of current knowledge regarding bony margin control published in the literature is provided.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have focused on the relationship between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and oral diseases. In this study, we explored the correlation between H. pylori infection and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). METHODS A total of 68 patients with OSCC and 104 age- and sex- matched healthy control subjects were retrospectively enrolled in this study. The H. pylori immunoglobin (Ig) G antibodies in serum were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method to assess the status of H. pylori infection of our study sample. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was also employed using H. pylori genus-specific 16S rRNA primers in fasting blood, and OSCC specimens were analyzed by histochemical stain of each enrolled subject. The strength of correlation between H. pylori and the development of OSCC was estimated by Spearman's correlation coefficient. RESULTS According to the three methods for detecting prevalence of H. pylori infection in the patients with OSCC, it was statistically lower than that in the healthy controls (35.3% vs. 54.8%, P = 0.012). An inverse correlation was observed between H. pylori infection and OSCC development (Spearman's correlation coefficient = -0.191, P = 0.012). In stratification analysis, we also found a statistical association between H. pylori infection and OSCC in the subpopulation with age ≥ 60 years (P = 0.037). CONCLUSION Our findings suggested that H. pylori infection may be negatively related to OSCC. A reverse association of H. pylori infection with OSCC risk in the subpopulation with age ≥ 60 years was also found.

Abstract
Importance: Adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACCs) are relatively rare tumours, notorious for wide local infiltration and perineural spread. Perineural extension commonly occurs along branches of the trigeminal and facial nerves, and its presence represents a poor prognostic factor with implications for treatment approach. Observations: We report the case of a 61-year-old female presenting with worsening left facial numbness and weakness. On magnetic resonance imaging, the patient was found to have perineural spread of a left parotid tumour along the auriculotemporal nerve. There was involvement of the V2 and V3 branches of the trigeminal nerve. An ultrasound-guided biopsy of the mass demonstrated ACC. Conclusions and relevance: The auriculotemporal nerve may serve as a route for tumour spread, particularly in the setting of head and neck malignancy. Moreover, this particular suspicion should be raised when patients with known malignancy experience concomitant trigeminal (V) and facial (VII) nerve dysfunctions.

Abstract
Several histological subtypes and grades of oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are described in human literature and these subtypes have distinct morphological features and biological behaviour. This retrospective study (1990-2010) included 84 dogs diagnosed with SCC of the oral cavity and oropharynx, excluding the tonsils. Sixty-nine of the SCCs (82.1%) were further diagnosed as conventional SCC (CSCC) (33 [47.8%] well-differentiated, 31 [44.9%] moderately-differentiated and five [7.3%] poorly-differentiated), five (5.95%) each as papillary SCC and basaloid SCC, three (3.6%) as adenosquamous carcinoma and two (2.4%) as spindle cell carcinoma. Compared with the general hospital population, neutered female dogs, dogs aged 10 to <15 years, English springer spaniels and Shetland sheepdogs were overrepresented. The majority (78.1%) of SCCs were proliferative with or without associated ulceration, although no significant association was observed between the gross appearance and different SCC subtypes. 71.4% of SCCs were located in dentate jaws; however, well-differentiated CSCC more often affected the tongue and other non-dentate mucosal surfaces (P=0.0022). No significant association was found between any of the SCC subtypes and tumour-associated inflammation (TAI), perineural and lymphovascular invasion (PNI, LVI), or between gross appearance of the tumour and tumour location, PNI, LVI or TAI or PNI, LVI, TAI and tumour location.
