A: NAs show antiviral effect by inhibition of hepatitis B virus (HBV) polymerase; B: NAs also inhibits human mitochondrial polymerase-γ enzyme. Thus, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) can not be synthesized. Oxidative phosphorylation is impaired. There are two consequences of this: Impaired energy production and increased reactive oxygen species that cause cellular damage. NAs: Nucleos(t)ide analogues.
