Abstract
OBJECTIVES (i) To develop sex-specific reference equations to predict distance walked (6MWD) in the 6-minute walk test (6MWT), in healthy subjects aged 45-85 years, from different geographic areas of Spain; and (ii) to compare developed equations with previously published in a large sample of COPD patients. METHODS First, a cross-sectional multicentre sample of randomly selected healthy subjects from 17 Spanish hospitals and universities performed two 6MWT. Linear regression and fractional polynomial modelling were used to develop the equations. Second, the developed equations were applied to 715 COPD patients from Spanish primary care centres and hospitals, and the % predicted 6MWD obtained was compared with previously published equations using Dunnett's multiple comparisons test. RESULTS 568 healthy subjects were included (51% females, mean (SD) age 62 (11) years), walked a 6MWD of 615 (113) and 557 (93)m in males and females, respectively. The developed equations included age, weight and height, and explained 43% and 51% of the 6MWD variance for males and females, respectively. In the COPD sample (n=715, 14% females, 68 (9) years, FEV1 61 (18) % predicted, 6MWD 464 (97)m), only 1 out of 9 previously published equations for males, and 6 out of 9 for females predicted 6MWD values similar to those of the newly developed Spanish reference equations. CONCLUSIONS The newly developed reference equations provide a more valid prediction of 6MWD in Spanish adults with COPD compared to previously published equations. We suggest their use in future research and clinical practice for the Spanish adult population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The new incremental step test (IST) is a field test that was developed for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), based on the characteristics of the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT); however, its measurement properties still need to be determined. We aimed, first, to assess the construct validity (through the comparison with the ISWT), within-day reliability and measurement error of the IST in people with COPD; and, second, to identify whether the participants have a learning effect in the IST. DESIGN Cross-sectional study, conducted according to COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments guidelines. SETTING A family health unit in Portugal, April 2022 to June 2023. PARTICIPANTS AND ANALYSIS 63 participants (67.5±10.5 years) attended two sessions to perform two IST and two ISWT, separately. Spearman's correlations were used to compare the best performances between the IST and the ISWT. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC2,1) was used for reliability, and the SE of measurement (SEM), minimal detectable change at 95% CI (MDC95) and Bland and Altman 95% limits of agreement (LoA) were used for measurement error. The learning effect was explored with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS The IST was significant and strongly correlated with the ISWT (0.72<ρ<0.74, p<0.001), presented an ICC2,1 of 0.95 (95% CI 0.92 to 0.97), SEM=11.7 (18.9%), MDC95=32.4 (52.2%) and the LoA were -33.61 to 31.48 for the number of steps. No difference was observed between the number of steps of the two attempts of the IST (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS The IST can be suggested as a valid and reliable test to assess exercise capacity in people with COPD, with no learning effect when two IST are performed on the same day. The measurement error of the IST is considered indeterminate. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT04715659.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Long-COVID-19 patients (LC19Ps) often experience cardiovascular and respiratory complications. Cardiorespiratory rehabilitation programs (CRRPs) have emerged as promising interventions to enhance exercise capacity in this population. This systematic review aimed to assess the impact of CRRPs on submaximal exercise performance, specifically the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) outcomes, in LC19Ps through an analysis of available randomized controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS A systematic search was conducted in PubMed/Medline and Scopus to identify relevant RCTs. Six RCTs meeting inclusion criteria were included in this review, investigating the effects of CRRPs on 6MWT outcomes in LC19Ps. RESULTS The findings from the included RCTs provide compelling evidence supporting the effectiveness of CRRPs in improving submaximal exercise performance in LC19Ps. These results underscore the potential of CRRPs to enhance submaximal exercise capacity and overall functional well-being in this population. However, future research is imperative to determine optimal CRRPs, including duration, intensity, and specific intervention components. Additionally, the long-term sustainability and durability of CRRP-induced improvements warrant further exploration. Future studies should prioritize patient-centric outcomes and address potential implementation barriers. CONCLUSION CRRPs show promise in ameliorating submaximal exercise performance among LC19Ps. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze respiratory muscle strength of patients with heart failure (HF) and correlate with functional capacity. METHODS This cross-sectional study involved patients with compensated HF of both sexes, aged above 18 years. Respiratory muscle strength was assessed by measuring maximum inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory pressures (MEP) using a manovacuometer. Patients were randomized into two groups to assess functional capacity: six-minute walk test (6MWT) and incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT). RESULTS Forty-eight patients were evaluated (23 from 6MWT and 25 from ISWT group). Most were male (67.8%), with mean age of 62.3 years and left ventricular ejection fraction of 40.8%. Mean predicted values of MIP [81.2% (74.7-87.8%)] and MEP [95.6% (88.2-103.0%)] did not indicate respiratory muscle weakness. The higher the New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class, the lower the MIP (p = .011) and MEP (p = .016) values. Physically active patients presented higher respiratory muscle strength than those sedentary (MIP: 104.5 vs. 71.9 cmH2O, p < .001; MEP: 120.0 vs. 91.1 cmH2O, p = .004). Functional capacity was impaired [6MWT: 416.0 m (372.8-459.3 m); ISWT: 304 m (263.4-344.9 m)], and distance covered in the ISWT was shorter than 6MWT group (p < .001). Distance covered in the ISWT group presented a moderate positive correlation with MIP (r = 0.45; p = .022) and MEP (r = 0.41; p = .041). CONCLUSION Most patients with HF presented respiratory muscle strength close to predicted values; however, sedentary patients and those with high NYHA functional class, showed reduced MIP and MEP. Functional capacity was reduced, and MIP and MEP correlated with distance covered in the ISWT.

Abstract
Introduction: The 6-min walk test (6MWT) is commonly used to assess the level of functional capacity of individuals with respiratory diseases. Although previous evidence has provided reference standards for the 6MWT in unhealthy older adults, no data have been provided for the Croatian healthy older populations. Therefore, the main purposes of the study were to define sex- and age-specific references for the 6MWT in older adults. Methods: Six-hundred and forty-three older adults (260 men and 383 women) aged 60-80 years were recruited in this observational cross-sectional study. The participants were instructed to walk the maximal distance possible for 6 min. The main outcome was the final score in the 6MWT conducted at a 30-m straight corridor. Results: Men exhibited longer walking distance, compared to women (678.3 ± 59.1 vs. 653.8 ± 49.9 m, p < 0.001) and younger men and women performed better, than their older counterparts (p < 0.001). However, the sex*age interaction effect showed no significant differences between men and women in the same age range (p = 0.865). Discussion: This is the first study with the purpose of providing reference standards for the 6MWT in a large sample of Croatian older adults. Older men and women in lower percentiles may be treated as a "risky group" of individuals with a special attention of implementing interventions to enhance the performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neuroplasticity and cardiovascular health behavior are critically important factors for optimal brain health. OBJECTIVE To assess the association between the efficacy of the mechanisms of neuroplasticity and metrics of cardiovascular heath in sedentary aging adults. METHODS We included thirty sedentary individuals (age = 60.6 ± 3.8 y; 63 % female). All underwent assessments of neuroplasticity, measured by the change in amplitude of motor evoked potentials elicited by single-pulse Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) at baseline and following intermittent Theta-Burst (iTBS) at regular intervals. Cardiovascular health measures were derived from the Incremental Shuttle Walking Test and included Heart Rate Recovery (HRR) at 1-min/2-min after test cessation. We also collected plasma levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and c-reactive protein. RESULTS We revealed moderate but significant relationships between TMS-iTBS neuroplasticity, and the predictors of cardiovascular health (|r| = 0.38 to 0.53, p < .05). HRR1 was the best predictor of neuroplasticity (β = 0.019, p = .002). The best fit model (Likelihood ratio = 5.83, p = .016) of the association between neuroplasticity and HRR1 (β = 0.043, p = .002) was selected when controlling for demographics and health status. VEGF and BDNF plasma levels augmented the association between neuroplasticity and HRR1. CONCLUSIONS Our findings build on existing data demonstrating that TMS may provide insight into neuroplasticity and the role cardiovascular health have on its mechanisms. These implications serve as theoretical framework for future longitudinal and interventional studies aiming to improve cardiovascular and brain health. HRR1 is a potential prognostic measure of cardiovascular health and a surrogate marker of brain health in aging adults.

Abstract
Background With our aging population, many individuals are at risk of developing age-related cognitive decline. Physical exercise has been demonstrated to enhance cognitive performance in aging adults. This study examined the effects of 8 weeks of aerobic exercise on cognitive performance and cardiorespiratory fitness in sedentary aging adults at risk for cognitive decline. Methods Fifty-two participants (age 62.9 ± 6.8, 76.9% female) engaged in eight weeks of moderate-to high-intensity exercise (19 in-person, 33 remotely). Global cognition was measured by the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status, the Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System, and the Digit Span subtest of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) Fourth Edition. Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured via heart rate recovery at minute 1 (HRR1) and 2 (HRR2), and exercise engagement (defined as percent of total exercise time spent in the prescribed heart rate zone). We measured pre and post changes using paired t-tests and mixed effects models, and investigated the association between cardiorespiratory and cognitive performance using multiple regression models. Cohen's d were calculated to estimate effect sizes. Results Overall, 63.4 % of participants demonstrated high engagement (≥ 70% total exercise time spent in the prescribed heart rate zone). There were significant pre-post improvements in verbal fluency and verbal memory, and a significant decrement in working memory, but these were associated with small effect sizes (Cohen's d <0.5). Concerning cardiorespiratory fitness, there was a pre-to-post significant improvement in HRR1 (p = 0.01, d = 0.30) and HRR2 (p < 0.001, d = 0.50). Multiple regressions revealed significant associations between cardiorespiratory and cognitive performance, but all were associated with small effect sizes (Cohen's d < 0.5). Interestingly, there were significant between-group differences in exercise engagement (all p < 0.001), with remote participants demonstrating greater exercise engagement than in-person participants. Conclusion Improvements in cognition and cardiorespiratory fitness were observed after 8 weeks of moderate to high-intensity exercise in aging adults. These results suggest that committing to a regular exercise regimen, even for a brief two-month period, can promote improvements in both cardiorespiratory fitness and cognitive performance, and that improvements are driven by exercise engagement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Incremental step tests (IST) can be used to assess exercise capacity in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The development of a new step test based on the characteristics of the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) is an important study to explore. We aimed to develop a new IST based on the ISWT in people with COPD, and assess its validity (construct validity) and reliability, according to Consensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) recommendations. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in participants recruited from hospitals/clinics. During the recruitment, the participants who presented a 6-minute walk test (6MWT) report in the previous month were also identified and the respective data was collected. Subsequently, participants attended two sessions at their homes. IST was conducted on the first visit, along with the 1 min sit-to-stand (1MSTS) test. IST was repeated on a second visit, performed 5-7 days after the first one. Spearman's correlations were used for construct validity, by comparing the IST with the 6MWT and the 1MSTS. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC2,1), SE of measurement (SEM) and minimal detectable change at 95% CI (MDC95) were used for reliability. The learning effect was explored with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS 50 participants (70.8±7.5 years) were enrolled. IST was significant and moderate correlated with the 6MWT (ρ=0.50, p=0.020), and with the 1MSTS (ρ=0.46, p=0.001). IST presented an ICC2,1=0.96, SEM=10.1 (16.6%) and MDC95=27.9 (45.8%) for the number of steps. There was a statistically significant difference between the two attempts of the IST (p=0.030). CONCLUSION Despite the significant and moderate correlations with the 6MWT and 1MSTS, the inability to full compliance with the COSMIN recommendations does not yet allow the IST to be considered valid in people with COPD. On the other hand, the IST is a reliable test based on its high ICC, but a learning effect and an 'indeterminate' measurement error were shown. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT04715659.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the relationship between handgrip strength (HGS), anthropometric parameters, perception of fatigue, and the distance covered in the 6-minute walk test (6MWD) in elderly people living in a long-stay institution (ILPI). Methods: Elderly people (n = 17; 77 ± 7 years) of both sexes, living in an LTCF in Espírito Santo, Brazil, participated in the study. Volunteers were evaluated using the 6-min walk test (6MWT), HGS, and Chalder's Fatigue Scale (EFC). Results: The means of the 6MWD (276 ± 81.6 m) and HGS (19.4 ± 10.5 Kg/f) of the elderly were below the predicted values. The 6MWD showed a moderate positive correlation with HGS (right r = 0.6; p = 0.008; left r = 0.5; p = 0.03) and with apex expansion (r = 0.5; p = 0.03), as well as a negative correlation with the body mass index (BMI) (r = -0.6; p = 0.01). Conclusion: In the environment of an ILPI, where there is a high prevalence of functional limitations and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in the elderly, comprehensive health care is a complex challenge. Thus, knowledge of these associations can highlight the importance of ensuring strategies to mitigate muscle weakness and immobility.

Abstract
Background Extensive evidence supports a link between aerobic exercise and cognitive improvements in aging adults. A major limitation with existing research is the high variability in cognitive response to exercise. Our incomplete understanding of the mechanisms that influence this variability and the low adherence to exercise are critical knowledge gaps and major barriers for the systematic implementation of exercise for promoting cognitive health in aging. Objective We aimed to provide an in-person and remotely delivered intervention study protocol with the main goal of informing the knowledge gap on the mechanistic action of exercise on the brain by characterizing important mechanisms of neuroplasticity, cardiorespiratory fitness response, and genetics proposed to underlie cognitive response to exercise. Methods This is an open-label, 2-month, interventional study protocol in neurologically healthy sedentary adults. This study was delivered fully in-person and in remote options. Participants underwent a total of 30 sessions, including the screening session, 3 pretest (baseline) assessments, 24 moderate-to-vigorous aerobic exercise sessions, and 3 posttest assessments. We recruited participants aged 55 years and above, sedentary, and cognitively healthy. Primary outcomes were neuroplasticity, cognitive function, and cardiorespiratory fitness. Secondary outcomes included genetic factors, endothelium function, functional mobility and postural control, exercise questionnaires, depression, and sleep. We also explored study feasibility, exercise adherence, technology adaptability, and compliance of both in-person and remote protocols. Results The recruitment phase and data collection of this study have concluded. Results are expected to be published by the end of 2021 or in early 2022. Conclusions The data generated in these studies will introduce tangible parameters to guide the development of personalized exercise prescription models for maximal cognitive benefit in aging adults. Successful completion of the specific aims will enable researchers to acquire the appropriate expertise to design and conduct studies by testing personalized exercise interventions in person and remotely delivered, likely to be more effective at promoting cognitive health in aging adults. Abstract
Official tests are used to assess the fitness status of soccer referees, and their results correlate with match performance. However, FIFA-approved tests expose the referees to high physical demands and are difficult to implement during the sportive year. The aim of our study was to evaluate the correlation between the 6 × 40-m sprint and Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Level 1 (IR1) official tests and other field-based tests that require no or little equipment, are not time-consuming, and impose low physical demands. All tests were performed by male referees from the Regional Section of the Italian Referee Association (n = 30). We observed a strong correlation between 6 × 40-m sprint and Illinois agility tests (r = 0.63, p = 0.001) and a moderate correlation between Yo-Yo IR1 and hand-grip strength in the dominant (r = 0.45, p = 0.014) and non-dominant hand (r = 0.41, p = 0.031). Interestingly, only a moderate correlation (r = -0.42, p = 0.025) was observed between the FIFA official tests, 6 × 40-m sprint and Yo-Yo IR1. These results suggest that Illinois agility and hand-grip tests could represent simple and low-physical-impact tools for repeated assessment and monitoring of referee fitness throughout the sportive season.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Reduction in functional capacity is a negative clinical outcome of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Studies have shown association between inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers and functional capacity. However, it is unclear whether these biomarkers are associated with outcomes of functional capacity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether plasma biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress are predictors of the 6-min walking test (6MWT)-derived outcomes. METHODS Twenty COPD patients were assessed on three consecutive days with different clinical measures, including functional capacity, and blood sampling. Plasma concentrations of IL-6, IL-8, TNF-ɑ, IL-10 and soluble TNF-ɑ receptors (sTNFR1 and sTNFR2) were determined by immunoassays. Oxidative stress was evaluated by determining lipid peroxidation products based on the enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, and total antioxidant capacity of plasma. Functional capacity was assessed considering the six-minute walking distance (6MWD) and the estimate of six-minute walking work (6MWW). The association between biomarkers (i.e. inflammation and oxidative stress) and functional exercise capacity was investigated through the Pearson's correlation coefficient. To identify the determinants of the 6MWT, multiple linear stepwise regression analyses were performed with adjustment for age, sex and GOLD classification. RESULTS Patients were predominantly male (65%), with mean age of 64 years and moderate airflow obstruction and impaired functional capacity. There were positive correlations between SOD activity and 6MWD (r = 0.520; p = 0.02) and 6MWW (r = 0.554; p = 0.01), as well as a negative correlation between sTNF-R1 and 6MWD (r = -0.437; p = 0.05). SOD was an independent determinant of the functional capacity, explaining 23% of the variability of 6MWD (p = 0.019) and 27% of the variability of 6MWW (p = 0.011). sTNF-R1 levels were associated with 6MWD and, together with SOD explained 40% of variability in 6MWD (p = 0.005). CONCLUSION SOD activity was an independent determinant of performance in the 6MWT, and together with sTNFR1 explained 40% of the variations in walking distance in COPD patients. SOD activity and sTNFR1 levels might be seen as potential biomarkers of the functional capacity in patients with COPD.

Abstract
This systematic review evaluated which outcome variables and cut-off values of pretreatment exercise tests are associated with treatment complications in patients with stage I-III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). PRISMA and Cochrane guidelines were followed. A total of 38 studies with adult patients undergoing treatment for stage I-III NSCLC who completed pretreatment exercise tests, and of whom treatment-related complications were recorded were included. A lower oxygen uptake at peak exercise amongst several other variables on the cardiopulmonary exercise test and a lower performance on field tests, such as the incremental shuttle walk test, stair-climb test, and 6-minute walk test, were associated with a higher risk for postoperative complications and/or postoperative mortality. Cut-off values were reported in a limited number of studies and were inconsistent. Due to the variety in outcomes, further research is needed to evaluate which outcomes and cut-off values of physical exercise tests are most clinically relevant.

Abstract
RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar o impacto da utilização de diferentes equações de referência brasileiras para a distância percorrida no teste da caminhada de 6 minutos (TC6min) na avaliação da capacidade funcional de exercício em pacientes com câncer de pulmão (CP). Este estudo transversal incluiu 48 pacientes com CP (idade média de 60±12 anos). Os participantes foram submetidos à avaliação de características sociodemográficas, clínicas e da sua capacidade funcional de exercício com o TC6min, seguindo recomendações internacionais. Foram analisadas cinco equações. A distância percorrida pelos pacientes (503±102 metros) foi relativamente próxima às distâncias previstas pelas equações de referência (82-94% do previsto), embora estatisticamente inferior (p<0,05 para todas).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Six-min walking test (6MWT) has been widely in patients with symptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD) to quantify the walking impairment and the efficacy of different therapeutic interventions. Despite the aforementioned usefulness of 6MWT for PAD, the information provided by this test goes beyond the meters walked. The aim of this study was to describe the relative values of 6MWT and body weight-walking distance product (DW) in patients with symptomatic PAD. METHODS Two hundred twenty-seven patients with symptomatic PAD participated in the study. The 6MWT was performed and absolute and claudication distances were obtained. The results of 6MWT were then relativized and expressed as a percentage of a healthy subject. DW was obtained by the product of 6MWT distance by weight. In both sexes, the relative 6MWT ranged from 57% to 64%. RESULTS Absolute 6MWT total distance (P < 0.001) was lower in women than in men, whereas the relative 6MWT total distance was similar between sexes (P = 0.398). The absolute and relative 6MWT total distance were similar among age categories (P > 0.072). The DW was higher in men than in women (P < 0.05). In addition, in women, DW was higher in younger group than in other age groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Patients with symptomatic PAD achieve less than 70% of the distance achieved by an age-matched healthy subject. In patients with symptomatic PAD, the relative values of 6MWT total distance are similar between sexes and among different age groups, whereas DW are influenced by age and sex.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent decades, space limitations in the clinical environment have forced health professionals to administer the six-minute walk test (6MWT) using a 20-m or even a 10-m course. However, course length and physical activity level (PAL) affect the test outcomes. AIM To develop a reference equation for the 6MWT that takes into account the effects of course length and PAL on the walking distance. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro. POPULATION Two hundred fifteen healthy adults. METHODS All subjects performed the 6MWT on 10-, 20- and 30-m courses. Eight regression models were constructed considering the association between the six-minute walking distance (6MWD) and heart rate, perceived effort (scores from the Borg's Perceived Exertion Scale-BPES), PAL (classification according to the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, IPAQ), as well as anthropometric and demographic variables. The models were analyzed for the coefficients of determination (R2) and statistical significance at P<0.05. RESULTS A nonlinear increase in the means of the 6MWDs obtained using the three course lengths was observed (591±70, 652±79 and 678±85 m for course lengths of 10, 20 and 30 m, respectively, with P<0.001). The 6MWD correlated positively with the following variables: sex (r=0.20), body height (r=0.30), IPAQ classification (r=0.14), ΔBPES rating (r=0.25) and Δheart rate (HR, r=0.23), with P<0.001 for all. In contrast, the 6MWD correlated negatively with age (r=-0.23) and Body Mass Index (BMI, r=-0.18), with P<0.001 for both. The regression model with the highest coefficient of determination (adjusted R2=0.36) included the following variables: sex, age, BMI, course length (CL), BPES, HR, and IPAQ. CONCLUSIONS The length of the course strongly impacts individual performance on the 6MWT in a predominantly young adult population. Furthermore, IPAQ-assessed PAL is an important independent predictor of 6MWD. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT The incorporation of course length in the prediction of 6MWD allows the use of a prediction equation that includes the effects of different course sizes. PAL should be used in the prediction of 6MWD.

Abstract
Background Effective disease management for people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH) includes the encouragement of physical activity. Physical function capacity in PLWH may be influenced by a variety of factors. Objectives This study describes the physical function capacity as assessed with the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) of an urban cohort of PLWH and determined whether a history of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), anthropometric measures, age and gender predicted distance walked. Method Secondary data collected from 84 PLWH on antiretroviral therapy were analysed. Information included 6MWT distance, anthropometric measurements and demographic profiles. Descriptive and inferential statistics were undertaken on the data. A regression analysis determined predictive factors for 6MWT distance achieved. Significance was set at a p-value of ≤ 0.05. Results The study consisted of 66 (78.6%) women and 18 (21.4%) men with a mean age of 39.1 (± 9.2) years. The 6MWT distance of the cohort was 544.3 (± 64.4) m with men walking further (602.8 [± 58.6] m) than women (528.3 [± 56.4] m); however, women experienced greater effort. The majority of the sample did not report a history of PTB (n = 67; 79.8%). Age, gender and anthropometric measures were associated with 6MWT distance, but of low to moderate strength. The regression equation generated included age and gender. This model was statistically significant (p < 0.00) and accounted for 34% of the total variance observed. Conclusion Age and gender were predictive factors of physical function capacity and women experienced greater effort. Clinical implications This study provides information on the physical function capacity of PLWH and a suggested 6MWT reference equation for PLWH in South Africa.

Abstract
Reduced functional ability and exercise tolerance in patients with heart failure (HF) are associated with poor quality of life and a worse prognosis. The 6-minute walking test (6MWT) is a widely available and well-tolerated test for the assessment of the functional capacity of patients with HF. Although the cardiopulmonary exercise test (a maximal exercise test) remains the gold standard for the evaluation of exercise capacity in patients with HF, the 6MWT (submaximal exercise test) may provide reliable information about the patient’s daily activity. The current review summarizes the value of 6MWT in patients with HF and identifies its usefulness and limitations in everyday clinical practice in populations of HF. We aimed to investigate potential associations of 6MWD with other measures of functional status and determinants of 6MWD in patients with HF as well as to review its prognostic role and changes to various interventions in these patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In addition to being simple and requiring minimal technology, the 6-min walk test (6MWT) has been found to be reproducible and well tolerated since its first use. However, the impact of non-anthropometric factors on functional capacity is less clear in healthy young adults because the majority experience no age-related changes in the locomotor system or associated comorbidities. AIM To identify the effect of physical activity level, degree of dyspnoea and pulmonary function on functional capacity, evaluated through the 6-min walking distance (6MWD) of healthy young adults, in order to prevent clinical abnormalities. METHOD This is a cross-sectional study including 190 healthy young adults who were subjected to the 6MWT to assess walking distance and degree of dyspnoea using the Borg scale. Furthermore, pulmonary function using spirometry and physical activity level using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) were assessed. According to the IPAQ, the subjects were categorised as sedentary, irregularly active or active. RESULTS The 6MWD was positively correlated with pulmonary function parameters (P ≤ 0.002 for all parameters). There was a marginally significant correlation between the 6MWD and the difference between the scores assessed before and after the test using the Borg scale. There was a trend towards significant differences in 6MWD according to the IPAQ categories. Furthermore, forced vital capacity was the only pulmonary function parameter with significant differences between IPAQ categories (P = 0.02). CONCLUSION In healthy young adults, greater pulmonary function indicates a greater 6MWD. In these subjects, physical activity level based on the IPAQ categories clearly affects pulmonary function. However, the IPAQ category and degree of dyspnoea are poorly related to the 6MWD of these subjects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) is one of the most widely used field tests to assess cardiorespiratory fitness in clinical and research settings. Reference equations to predict ISWT distance in different populations and age cohorts have been established. However, an equation for the Portuguese pediatric population is not available. This study aimed to develop a reference equation for predicting ISWT in Portuguese children and adolescents. METHOD Healthy children and adolescents aged between 5 and 17 years old were recruited. Sociodemographic (sex, age), anthropometric (height, weight) and physical activity (Physical Activity Index) data were collected. Lung function was assessed through spirometry and quadriceps muscular strength through hand-held dynamometry. The ISWT was performed twice. A reference equation was established with a multiple linear regression. RESULTS 130 (60 male; 13.66±2.61y) participants with normal lung function (forced expiratory volume in one second 102.73±15.09% predicted), body mass index (BMI) (20.27±3.59kg/m2) and quadriceps muscular strength (19.75±6.84kgf), completed the assessment. 50.8% (n=66) of the participants were moderately active. Participants walked on average 1165.08±327.19m in the ISWT. Sex, age and BMI were independent contributors to the ISWT, explaining 54% of its variability (p<0.001). The derived reference equation was: ISWT=342.06+(283.07×sex)+(83.61×age)-(22.22×BMI), with female=0 and male=1. CONCLUSION Sex, age and BMI were found to be contributors to the ISWT predictive equation for pediatric population, providing a simple reference to assess their cardiorespiratory fitness.

Background/Aims Whole body vibration is an exercise alternative that can be used in the rehabilitation of renal transplant recipients with the aim of reducing cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of whole body vibration training on heart rate variability, cardiorespiratory parameters and functional capacity on five renal transplant recipients. Methods Renal transplant recipients underwent whole body vibration exercise twice a week for a total of 12 weeks. All participants were monitored using the 24-hour Holter to evaluate the heart rate variability domains. An exercise test to evaluate maximal oxygen consumption and the distance walked in the Six-Minute Walk Test to evaluate functional capacity were also recorded. Results Overall, two of the five transplant recipients improved sympathovagal balance at the end of the study. Maximal oxygen consumption improved in three transplanted patients, and the distance walked improved for two patients. The results showed that whole body vibration training improved heart rate variability and maximal and submaximal test performance in some transplanted recipients. Conclusion The 12-week training protocol with twice weekly whole body vibration sessions was sufficient to improve heart rate variability and the performance of maximal and submaximal tests in some renal transplant recipients, although the responses were heterogeneous for the considered variables. Whole body vibration may be an alternative to conventional means of physical exercise because it causes minimal cardiovascular stress, which could be especially indicated for this population given the risk presence of arrhythmias and sudden death; therefore studies with better designs need to be developed in order to verify the effectiveness of this intervention.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Preliminary studies have showed that the Incremental Shuttle Walking Test (ISWT) is a maximal test, however comparison between ISWT with the cardiopulmonary exercise test (CEPT) has not yet performed in the healthy woman population. Furthermore, there is no regression equation available in the current literature to predict oxygen peak consumption (VO2 peak). Thus, this study aimed to compare the ISWT with CEPT and to develop an equation to predict peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak) in healthy women participants. METHODS First, the VO2 peak, respiratory exchange ratio (R peak), heart rate max (HR max) and percentage of predicted HR max (% predicted HR max) were evaluated in the CEPT and ISWT (n = 40). Then, an equation was developed to predict the VO2 peak (n = 54) and its validation was performed (n = 20). RESULTS There were no significant differences between the ISWT and CEPT of VO2 peak, HR max and % predicted HR max values (P>0.05), except for R peak measure in the ISWT (1.22 ± 0.13) and CEPT (1.18 ± 0.1) (P = 0.022). Therefore, both tests showed a moderate positive correlation of VO2 peak (r = 0.51; P = 0.0007), HR max (r = 0.65; P<0.0001) and R peak (r = 0.55; P = 0.0002) and the Bland-Altman analysis showed agreement of VO2 peak (bias = -0.14). The distance walked on ISWT and age explained 36.3% (R2 Adjusted = 0.363) of the variance in VO2 peak. The equation developed was VO2 peak (predicted) = 19.793 + (0.02 x distance walked)-(0.236 x age). There was no statistically significant difference between the VO2 peak measured directly and the predicted, and the Bland-Altman analysis showed agreement (bias = 1.5 ml/kg/min). CONCLUSION ISWT is a maximal test showing similar results compared to the CEPT, and the predicted equation was valid and applicable for VO2 peak assessing in young adult healthy women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypertension is associated with deterioration of musculoskeletal function and functional capacity. Existing prediction models for assessment of the 6-min walk test (6MWT) do not capture the disease-related functional capacity. This study developed a multivariate prediction model of the measured 6-min walked distance (6MWDM) in hypertension and proposed target-values based on optimal therapeutic aims. METHODS Seventy-six patients (38 men, 56.1 ± 14.3 years, systolic pressure 156.7 ± 17.5 mmHg, diastolic pressure 92.9 ± 6.9 mmHg) underwent anamnesis, physical examination, and laboratory analysis. Functional capacity was assessed using the 6MWT, being the 6MWDM considered as the dependent variable. Independent variables included sex (S, coded 'male' = 1, 'female' = 0), age (A), body height (H), body mass, mean blood pressure (MBP), and physical activity (IPAQ, coded 1-5). Target-values were derived from theoretical scenarios of optimal blood pressure and physical activity, separately and combined. RESULTS Patients walked 324.5 ± 10.1 m in the average of two trials 30-min apart. Pearson's correlation coefficient showed moderate-to-weak significant associations between 6MWDM and all independent variables. The final multivariate model was 6MWDP = 611.347-4.446 × MBP + 267.630 × H - 1.511 × A + IPAQcode + Scode (adjusted R2 = 0.680, SE of bias = 6.3 m), suggesting that clinical, anthropometric, and hemodynamic information determines functional capacity. Predicted values yielded a group-average of 325 ± 87 m. Target-values under the optimal scenario resulted in 420 ± 60 m. CONCLUSIONS Sex (men), higher body height, higher physical activity, lower mean blood pressure, and lower age are independently correlated with higher 6MWDM in patients with hypertension. Target-values can be estimated for therapeutic aims related to hemodynamics and lifestyle.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) is widely used in clinical and research settings. However, there are no reference equations to predict the walk distance achieved in the ISWT (ISWD) for healthy Japanese adults. We aimed to establish a reference equation for the ISWD prediction in Japanese adults. METHODS The sample comprised 590 healthy Japanese subjects (237 male). All subjects performed the ISWT twice, and their anthropometric and demographic data were collected, including gender, age, height, weight, and body mass index (BMI). RESULTS Subjects walked 640 [490-793] m in the ISWT. The ISWD correlated (p < 0.001 for all) with age (r = - 0.51), gender (r = 0.56), weight (r = 0.39), and height (r = 0.62), but not with BMI (r = - 0.01, p = 0.74). The stepwise multiple regression model showed that age, gender, and height were independent contributors to the ISWT in healthy subjects, explaining 50% of the variability. The reference equation for the ISWD was: ISWD(m) = - 4.894 - 4.107 × Age (years) + 131.115 × Gender + 4.895 × Height (cm), where male gender = 1. CONCLUSION We have established a reference equation for the ISWD prediction in Japanese adults. The prediction accuracy was high (R2 = 50%), and a reference equation was established using anthropometric and demographic variables that can be easily assessed in clinical settings. The reference equation developed in this study will be useful for evaluating the magnitude of exercise intolerance in Japanese adults.

Abstract
Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) manifests itself in complex ways, with local and systemic effects; because of this, a multifactorial approach is needed for disease evaluation, in order to understand its severity and impact on each individual. Thus, our objective was to study the correlation between easily accessible variables, usually available in clinical practice, and maximum aerobic capacity, and to determine models for peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) estimation in COPD patients. Subjects and methods Individuals with COPD were selected for the study. At the first visit, clinical evaluation was performed. During the second visit, the volunteers were subjected to the cardiopulmonary exercise test. To determine the correlation coefficient of VO2peak with forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) (% pred.) and the COPD Assessment Test score (CATs), Pearson or Spearman tests were performed. VO2 at the peak of the exercise was estimated from the clinical variables by simple and multiple linear regression analyses. Results A total of 249 subjects were selected, 27 of whom were included after screening (gender: 21M/5F; age: 65.0±7.3 years; body mass index: 26.6±5.0 kg/m2; FEV1 (% pred.): 56.4±15.7, CAT: 12.4±7.4). Mean VO2 peak was 12.8±3.0 mL⋅kg−1⋅min−1 and VO2peak (% pred.) was 62.1%±14.9%. VO2peak presented a strong positive correlation with FEV1 (% pred.), r: 0.70, and a moderate negative correlation with the CATs, r: -0.54. In the VO2peak estimation model based on the CAT (estimated VO2peak =15.148− [0.185× CATs]), the index explained 20% of the variance, with estimated error of 2.826 mL⋅kg−1⋅min−1. In the VO2peak estimation model based on FEV1 (estimated VO2peak =6.490+ [0.113× FEV1]), the variable explained 50% of the variance, with an estimated error of 2.231 mL⋅kg−1⋅min−1. In the VO2peak estimation model based on CATs and FEV1 (estimated VO2peak =8.441− [0.0999× CAT] + [0.1000× FEV1]), the variables explained 55% of the variance, with an estimated error of 2.156 mL⋅kg−1⋅min−1. Conclusion COPD patients’ maximum aerobic capacity has a significant correlation with easily accessible and widely used clinical variables, such as the CATs and FEV1, which can be used to estimate peak VO2.

Abstract
Whole body vibration training (WBVT) has been identified as an alternative intervention to improve exercise capacity and quality of life of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the effect of WBVT on inflammatory-oxidative biomarkers remains unknown. The aim of this trial was to investigate the effects of WBVT on quality of life and physical and inflammatory-oxidative parameters in patients with COPD. Twenty patients were equally divided into 1) an intervention group (IG) that performed the WBVT, and 2) a control group (CG) that did not receive any intervention. Intervention consisted in performing static squatting on a vibrating platform, in six series of 30 s, 3 days/wk, for 12 wk. Patients were evaluated for plasma levels of IL-6, IL-8, IFN-γ, soluble receptors of TNF-α; white cell count; plasma levels of oxidant and antioxidant markers; 6-min walking distance (6MWD); peak oxygen uptake (V̇o2peak); handgrip strength; quality of life; timed 5-chair sit-to-stand (5STS); and timed get-up and go test (TUG). After WBVT, patients from IG showed a significant increase in the 6MWD, V̇o2peak, and handgrip strength ( P < 0.05). Furthermore, patients from the IG reached minimal clinically important difference regarding quality of life. No significant differences were found in 5STS, TUG, inflammatory-oxidative biomarkers, and white cell count in the IG. The CG did not show significant improvement in all assessments ( P > 0.05). Taken together, our results demonstrated that the WBVT induced clinically significant benefits regarding exercise capacity, muscle strength, and quality of life in patients with COPD that were not related to inflammatory-oxidative biomarker changes. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Whole body vibration training is a new option for nonpharmacological treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study showed the potential of this training to improve exercise capacity, quality of life, and muscle strength in patients with COPD. Furthermore, to our knowledge this was the first study showing that vibration exercise does not modify the plasma levels of inflammatory-oxidative biomarkers, suggesting that the beneficial effects on physical measures and quality of life are independent of changes in biomarkers.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Six-minute walk test (6MWT) is used for evaluating functional exercise capacity. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reference equations to predict six-minute walk distance (6MWD) for the Portuguese population. The aims of the present study were to measure anthropometric data and 6MWD in a sample of healthy Portuguese population, to establish reference equations to predict 6MWD and to compare our equations with those obtained by previously published studies. METHODS We conducted an observational prospective study. We consecutively recruited 158 healthy 18-70 years old subjects from Porto district, who performed two 6MWTs using a standardized protocol. The best 6MWD was used for further analysis. RESULTS The mean 6MWD was 627.8m (SD=73.3m). The variables that were significantly associated with the 6MWD were age, sex, BMI and ΔHR (Heart Rateat the end of the test-HRat rest). We found three explanatory models for 6MWD, the best with an explanatory power of 38%: 6MWD=721.7-1.6×Age-4.0×BMI+0.9×ΔHR+58.4×Sex. We verified that 6MWD decreased 1.6m per year of age, and 4.0m per unit of BMI and increased 0.892m per beat per minute. Moreover, on average, males walk 58.4m more than females (p<0.001). Applying equations from other studies to our population resulted in an overestimation or underestimation of the 6MWD. CONCLUSION The present study was the first to describe the 6MWD in healthy Portuguese people aged 18-70 years old and to propose predictive equations. These can contribute to improving the evaluation of Caucasian Mediterranean patients with diseases that affect their functional capacity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interpretation of the six-minute walk distance (6MWD) is enhanced by using recommended reference equations. Whenever possible, the choice of equation should be region-specific. A potential problem is that different equations for the 6MWD may have been developed for the same population, and it may be complicated to choose the most suitable. OBJECTIVE To verify the agreement of different reference equations in classifying patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) as having reduced or preserved 6MWD. METHODS 159 patients with COPD performed the six-minute walk test according to international standardization. They were classified as having reduced 6MWD if it was below the lower limit of normal. Five Brazilian equations (Iwama; Britto1; Britto2; Dourado; Soares) and the two non-Brazilian equations most cited worldwide (Troosters; Enright) were used. The agreement for patients classified as reduced or preserved 6MWD was verified by Cohen's Kappa (pair-to-pair) analysis. The proportion of patients classified as having reduced walked distance was compared by the Chi-squared test. RESULTS Agreement between equations varied largely in classifying subjects as having reduced or preserved 6MWD (Kappa: 0.10-0.82). Brazilian equations with the highest agreement were Iwama, Britto1 and Britto2 (Kappa>0.75). The proportion of patients classified as having reduced 6MWD was statistically similar only between equations in which the agreement was higher than 0.70. CONCLUSION Even reference equations from the same country vary considerably in the classification of reduced or preserved 6MWD, and it is recommended that the region-specific ones be used as they give with higher agreement for similar and comparable interpretation of the patients' functional exercise capacity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The six-minute walk test (6MWT) is an important tool for evaluating functional capacity and exercise tolerance. The reference equations for the 6MWT in healthy subjects were established on the basis of American and European populations, but reference equations have been proposed with different variables for the Brazilian population. OBJECTIVE To analyze the predictive validity of six reference equations for the six-minute walking distance (6MWD) in healthy adult men. METHODS We evaluated 103 individuals in relation to level of physical activity (IPAQ), respiratory symptoms (MRC), handgrip strength, and 6MWD test. The data were submitted to a normality test, then the Bland-Altman agreement test was used to compare individual 6MWD values with that expected for each equation. RESULTS The subjects were active, with a mean age of 34.12 (SD=8.88) years and no respiratory symptoms. The mean of the 6MWD was 663.43 (SD=93.01)m. The 6MWD's predicted values came closest to the walked distance covered by Britto et al.'s equation (using BMI) of 647.62 (SD=38.62)m. CONCLUSIONS The equation proposed by Britto et al. using body mass index (BMI) was the closest to the 6MWD for the individuals studied and could be widely used as a reference tool during the 6MWT in healthy Brazilian men.

Abstract
AIM This study aims to investigate the ability of patients' baseline characteristics to predict the distance walked during the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) in the cardiac rehabilitation (CR) population and to produce reference values to guide practice. METHODS Secondary analysis was conducted on National Audit Cardiac Rehabilitation data collected between 2010 and 2015. Patients (n=8863) were included if they were aged ≥18 years and had a recorded ISWT score assessed before starting CR. Stepwise regression was used to identify factors predicting the ISWT distance. Age, gender, body mass index, height, weight; presence of hypertension, dyslipidemia or diabetes; smoking and physical activity were independent variables. ISWT distance was the dependent variable. The 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles of the ISWT distance were used as reference values. RESULTS Age and gender explained 27% of the variance of the distance covered in the ISWT (R2=0.27, adjusted R2=0.27,Standard Error of the Estimate (SEE) = 148.7, p<0.001). Reference values using age and gender categories were developed. CONCLUSION Age and gender were the significant factors for predicting the walking fitness in the CR population, with age being the best predictor. The age and gender reference values produced represent a potentially valuable tool to be used in the clinical setting.

Abstract
Objective : To determine whether a restrictive pattern on spirometry is associated with the level of physical activity in daily life (PADL), as well as with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, in asymptomatic adults. Methods : A total of 374 participants (mean age, 41 ± 14 years) underwent spirometry, which included the determination of FVC and FEV1. A restrictive pattern on spirometry was defined as an FEV1/FVC ratio > 0.7 and an FVC < 80% of the predicted value. After conducting demographic, anthropometric, and CVD risk assessments, we evaluated body composition, muscle function, and postural balance, as well as performing cardiopulmonary exercise testing and administering the six-minute walk test. The PADL was quantified with a triaxial accelerometer. Results : A restrictive pattern on spirometry was found in 10% of the subjects. After multivariate logistic regression, adjusted for confounders (PADL and cardiorespiratory fitness), the following variables retained significance (OR; 95% CI) as predictors of a restrictive pattern: systemic arterial hypertension (17.5; 1.65-184.8), smoking (11.6; 1.56-87.5), physical inactivity (8.1; 1.43-46.4), larger center-of-pressure area while standing on a force platform (1.34; 1.05-1.71); and dyslipidemia (1.89; 1.12-1.98). Conclusions : A restrictive pattern on spirometry appears to be common in asymptomatic adults. We found that CVD risk factors, especially systemic arterial hypertension, smoking, and physical inactivity, were directly associated with a restrictive pattern, even when the analysis was adjusted for PADL and cardiorespiratory fitness. Longitudinal studies are needed in order to improve understanding of the etiology of a restrictive pattern as well as to aid in the design of preventive strategies.

Abstract
The incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) is used to assess functional capacity of patients entering cardiac rehabilitation. Factors such as age and sex account for a proportion of the variance in test performance in healthy individuals but there are no reference values for patients with cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to produce reference values for the ISWT. Participants were n = 548 patients referred to outpatient cardiac rehabilitation who underwent a clinical examination and performed the ISWT. We used regression to identify predictors of performance and produced centile values using the generalised additive model for location, scale and shape model. Men walked significantly further than women (395 ± 165 vs. 269 ± 118 m; t = 9.5, P < 0.001) so data were analysed separately by sex. Age (years) was the strongest predictor of performance in men (β = -5.9; 95% CI: -7.1 to -4.6 m) and women (β = -4.8; 95% CI: -6.3 to 3.3). Centile curves demonstrated a broadly linear decrease in expected ISWT values in males (25-85 years) and a more curvilinear trend in females. Patients entering cardiac rehabilitation present with highly heterogeneous ISWT values. Much of the variance in performance can be explained by patients' age and sex. Comparing absolute values with age-and sex-specific reference values may aid interpretation of ISWT performance during initial patient assessment at entry to cardiac rehabilitation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES: To assess functional capacity in the preoperative phase of pulmonary surgery by
comparing predicted and obtained values for the six-minute walk test (6MWT) in
patients with and without postoperative pulmonary complication (PPC) METHOD: Twenty-one patients in the preoperative phase of open thoracotomy were evaluated
using the 6MWT, followed by monitoring of the postoperative evolution of each
participant who underwent the routine treatment. Participants were then divided
into two groups: the group with PPC and the group without PPC. The results were
also compared with the predicted values using reference equations for the 6MWT RESULTS: Over half (57.14%) of patients developed PPC. The 6MWT was associated with the
odds for PPC (odds ratio=22, p=0.01); the group without PPC in the postoperative
period walked 422.38 (SD=72.18) meters during the 6MWT, while the group with PPC
walked an average of 340.89 (SD=100.93) meters (p=0.02). The distance traveled by
the group without PPC was 80% of the predicted value, whereas the group with PPC
averaged less than 70% (p=0.03), with more appropriate predicted values for the
reference equations CONCLUSIONS: The 6MWT is an easy, safe, and feasible test for routine preoperative evaluation
in pulmonary surgery and may indicate patients with a higher chance of developing
PPC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the 6-minute step test's (6MST) reliability and validity and to establish reference performance values of this test. DESIGN Prospective observational cross-sectional study. SETTING Spirometry and Respiratory Physiotherapy Laboratory, Federal University of São Carlos (institutional). PARTICIPANTS Ninety-one individuals [42 men and 49 women, mean age = 39 years (SD, 17 years)] without any diagnosed diseases and with normal exercise capacity [6-minute walk test (6MWT) >75% of the predicted normal]. INDEPENDENT VARIABLES Participants underwent two 6MST on 1 day and two 6MWT on another day in randomized order. Furthermore, age, gender, height, weight, lower limbs length, abdominal circumference, percentage of body fat, and fat-free mass were obtained. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Test-retest reliability was assessed by comparing the findings of the two 6MST using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman plot. Validity was assessed by comparing outcomes of the 6MST to outcomes of 6MWT using the Pearson correlation coefficient. A multiple regression analysis was conducted using the stepwise method to develop an equation to predict reference values. RESULTS The performance (mean steps ± SD) in the first and second test was 149 ± 34 and 149 ± 36 steps, respectively, which was correlated to distance (in meters) in 6MWT (r = 0.72; P < 0.05). Six-minute step test performance was reliable (ICC = 0.9; 95% confidence interval: 0.85-0.93). The equation to predict reference values for the first 6MST was significant (P < 0.001 and R = 0.48): Performance(steps) = 174 to 1.05 × Age(years) to women and Performance(steps) = 209 to 1.05 × Age(years) to men. CONCLUSIONS Six-minute step test is a reliable and valid test. Moreover, the number of steps may be predicted by demographic and anthropometric variables with moderate strength of prediction. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Six-minute step test is an exercise test that is easy to be conducted, more tolerable than a graded exercise test, requires fewer equipments and space, and permits better monitoring of the participants. The assessment of the reliability, validity, and reference values will provide a better interpretability for clinicians to use it, especially in primary care.

Abstract
The use of different 6-min walk distance (6MWD) reference equations probably results in different predicted 6MWD reference values. We wished to investigate the impact of several 6MWD reference equations for adults in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and factors accountable for different 6MWD% predicted values. Twenty-two 6MWD reference equations were applied to a data set of 2757 patients with COPD. The predicted 6MWD reference value of Troosters and colleagues was used as the point of reference. Four out of 21 remaining equations resulted in comparable 6MWD% predicted, 16 equations resulted in significantly higher 6MWD% predicted and 1 equation resulted in a significantly lower 6MWD% predicted. Similar differences in 6MWD% predicted were observed after stratification by sex. Body mass index and global initiative for chronic obstructive lung disease (GOLD) stage classification demonstrated varying results within and between the groups; 9 out of 21 equations resulted in comparable 6MWD% predicted in underweight patients but only 1 equation demonstrated comparable result in obese. Eight equations in GOLD I, whilst 5 out of 21 equations in GOLD IV resulted in comparable 6MWD% predicted. Existing 6MWD reference equations will give varying results. The choice of 6MWD reference equation should consider the consistency of 6-min walk test operating procedures and at least be specific for the country/region of origin.

Abstract
The 6-minute walk test (6MWT) is a simple field test that is widely used in clinical
settings to assess functional exercise capacity. However, studies with healthy
subjects are scarce. We hypothesized that the 6MWT might be useful to assess exercise
capacity in healthy subjects. The purpose of this study was to evaluate 6MWT
intensity in middle-aged and older adults, as well as to develop a simple equation to
predict oxygen uptake (V˙O2) from the 6-min walk distance (6MWD). Eighty-six participants, 40
men and 46 women, 40-74 years of age and with a mean body mass index of 28±6
kg/m2, performed the 6MWT according to American Thoracic Society
guidelines. Physiological responses were evaluated during the 6MWT using a K4b2
Cosmed telemetry gas analyzer. On a different occasion, the subjects performed ramp
protocol cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) on a treadmill. Peak V˙O2 in the 6MWT corresponded to 78±13% of the peak V˙O2 during CPET, and the maximum heart rate corresponded to 80±23% of
that obtained in CPET. Peak V˙O2 in CPET was adequately predicted by the 6MWD by a linear regression
equation: V˙O2 mL·min-1·kg-1 = -2.863 +
(0.0563×6MWDm) (R2=0.76). The 6MWT represents a
moderate-to-high intensity activity in middle-aged and older adults and proved to be
useful for predicting cardiorespiratory fitness in the present study. Our results
suggest that the 6MWT may also be useful in asymptomatic individuals, and its use in
walk-based conditioning programs should be encouraged.

Abstract
Background The application of the Shuttle Walking Test (SWT) to assess cardiorespiratory fitness and the intensity of this test in healthy participants has rarely been studied. This study aimed to assess and correlate the cardiorespiratory responses of the SWT with the cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CEPT) and to develop a regression equation for the prediction of peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak) in healthy sedentary adult men. Methods In the first stage of this study, 12 participants underwent the SWT and the CEPT on a treadmill. In the second stage, 53 participants underwent the SWT twice. In both phases, the VO2 peak, respiratory exchange ratio (R), and heart rate (HR) were evaluated. Results Similar results in VO2 peak (P>0.05), R peak (P>0.05) and predicted maximum HR (P>0.05) were obtained between the SWT and CEPT. Both tests showed strong and significant correlations of VO2 peak (r = 0.704, P = 0.01) and R peak (r = 0.737, P<0.01), as well as the agreement of these measurements by Bland-Altman analysis. Body mass index and gait speed were the variables that explained 40.6% (R2 = 0.406, P = 0.001) of the variance in VO2 peak. The results obtained by the equation were compared with the values obtained by the gas analyzer and no significant difference between them (P>0.05) was found. Conclusions The SWT produced maximal cardiorespiratory responses comparable to the CEPT, and the developed equation showed viability for the prediction of VO2 peak in healthy sedentary men.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To provide an overview of the reference values and methodology used to obtain them for time- and distance-limited walk tests. METHODS We performed a systematic review and searched PubMed, MEDLINE (Ovid), EMBASE, CINAHL, Scopus, PEDro, and The Cochrane Library from 1946 to May 2013. Full-text peer-reviewed articles written in English, French or Spanish were considered eligible. Two authors independently screened titles and abstracts. One author determined eligibility of full-text articles, appraised methodological quality, and extracted data. A second author independently verified the accuracy of extracted data. RESULTS Of the 41 eligible studies reviewed, 25 failed to describe the method used to select participants and 10 had an inadequate sample size. Twenty-five studies provided reference values for one time-limited walk test (6-min walk test (6 MWT)) and 18 studies provided reference values for 15 distance-limited walk tests. Across studies, walk test distances ranged from 3m to 40m. Descriptive values and reference equations for the 6 MWT were reported in 15 and 20 studies, respectively. Across 43 regression equations (median R(2)=0.46), age (98%) and sex (91%) were most frequently included. The equation yielding the maximum R(2) value (0.78) included age, height, weight and percentage of predicted maximum heart rate. Among six unique regression equations for distance-limited walk tests (median R(2)=0.17), sex (83%), age (67%) and weight (67%) were most frequently included. The equation yielding the maximum R(2) value (0.25) included age and sex. CONCLUSIONS Reference values reported for these tests provide a basis for classifying walking capacity as within normal limits, determining the magnitude of deficit, educating clients, setting rehabilitation goals, and planning studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate if the Incremental Shuttle Walking Test (ISWT) requires maximal effort in healthy subjects of different ages. DESIGN Cross-sectional. SETTING University-based research laboratory. PARTICIPANTS 331 healthy subjects separated into six groups according to age: G1, 18 to 28 years; G2, 29 to 39 years; G3, 40 to 50 years; G4, 51 to 61 years; G5, 62 to 72 years and; G6, 73 to 83 years. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Two ISWTs were performed and participants were permitted to run and to exceed 12 levels during the test, if necessary. Heart rate (HR) and symptoms of dyspnoea and fatigue were recorded before and after the test, and the percentage of age-predicted maximal HR (HRmax) was calculated. Maximal effort was defined as HRmax >90% of age-predicted HRmax. RESULTS Almost 31% of the subjects exceeded 12 levels in the ISWT. At the end of the test, all groups presented a median [interquartile range] HR greater than 90% of HRmax (G1: 100 [95 to 104]; G2: 100 [96 to 105]; G3: 103 [97 to 108]; G4: 99 [91 to 106]; G5: 96 [87 to 106] and G6: 96 [91 to 109]% HRmax). Regarding symptoms, all groups showed higher values after the test (P<0.05). A multiple logistic regression analysis identified female gender, older age and a lower HR before the test as determinants of not achieving 90% of HRmax at the end of the test. CONCLUSIONS The ISWT requires maximal effort in healthy individuals, but for that it is necessary to extend the test beyond twelve levels. Female gender, older age and lower heart rate before the test are the determinants of not reaching maximal effort.

Abstract
Background: The incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) was developed > 20 years ago and has been used to assess peak exercise capacity in a variety of chronic diseases. The aim of this systematic review is to describe the measurement properties of the ISWT in a clinical population.Methods: Of 800 articles identified by electronic and hand searches, 35 were included. Twenty-one articles included data on the validity of the ISWT, 18 on the reliability, four on the responsiveness,and four on the interpretability.Results: Most of the studies were conducted in patients with COPD (n = 13) or cardiac disease(n = 8). For criterion validity, comparisons between distance covered during the ISWT and peak oxygen consumption reported correlations ranging from 0.67 to 0.95 ( P <.01). Intraclass correlation coefficients for test-retest reliability ranged from 0.76 to 0.99. The ISWT was shown to be responsive to pulmonary rehabilitation and bronchodilator administration. The minimal clinically important difference (MCID) in patients with COPD was 48 m. Predictive equations for the distance in the ISWT are available for healthy individuals.Conclusions: The ISWT can be considered a valid and reliable test to assess maximal exercise capacity in individuals with chronic respiratory diseases. The ISWT has been shown to be responsive to pulmonary rehabilitation and bronchodilator use in individuals with COPD, cystic fibrosis,and asthma. Further studies examining responsiveness and the MCID of the ISWT in patients with conditions other than lung diseases are required for the interpretation of interventions in other populations.

Abstract
This systematic review examined the measurement properties of the 6-min walk test (6MWT), incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) and endurance shuttle walk test (ESWT) in adults with chronic respiratory disease.Studies that report the evaluation or use of the 6MWT, ISWT or ESWT were included. We searched electronic databases for studies published between January 2000 and September 2013.The 6-min walking distance (6MWD) is a reliable measure (intra-class correlation coefficients ranged from 0.82 to 0.99 in seven studies). There is a learning effect, with greater distance walked on the second test (pooled mean improvement of 26 m in 13 studies). Reliability was similar for ISWT and ESWT, with a learning effect also evident for ISWT (pooled mean improvement of 20 m in six studies). The 6MWD correlates more strongly with peak work capacity (r=0.59–0.93) and physical activity (r=0.40–0.85) than with respiratory function (r=0.10–0.59). Methodological factors affecting 6MWD include track length, encouragement, supplemental oxygen and walking aids. Supplemental oxygen also affects ISWT and ESWT performance. Responsiveness was moderate to high for all tests, with greater responsiveness to interventions that included exercise training.The findings of this review demonstrate that the 6MWT, ISWT and ESWT are robust tests of functional exercise capacity in adults with chronic respiratory disease.

Abstract
[Purpose] A significant increase in the number of oldest old has occurred worldwide. The aim of this study was to characterize the functional capacity of the oldest old residents in a long-stay institution in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. [Subjects and Methods] All participants were evaluated according to the following metrics: anthropometry, body composition (bioelectrical impedance), handgrip strength, balance (Berg scale and stabilometry), ankle mobility (electrogoniometry), physical capacity (six-minute walk test), quality of life (WHOQOL-OLD), and dietary habits (questionnaire). [Results] Twenty elderly subjects with a mean age of 85.75 ± 5.22 years and a mean fat percentage of 39.02 ± 5.49% participated in the study. The group at risk of falls (n = 8) had a lower handgrip strength and walked a shorter distance over the course of six minutes compared with the group not at risk of falls. The obese group (n = 15) had higher values for stabilometric variables than the nonobese group. There was a positive and significant correlation between ankle joint mobility and physical capacity (r = 0.47). [Conclusion] High values for obesity and low values for handgrip strength and physical capacity were associated with worse body balance. Low values for ankle mobility were also associated with worse physical capacity in this population.

Abstract
INTRODUÇÃO: Devido à importância do teste de caminhada de seis minutos (TC6), algumas equações têm sido propostas para predizer o resultado esperado.OBJETIVO: Comparar os valores encontrados em diferentes equações de referência para predição da distância percorrida no TC6 em idosos praticantes de exercícios físicos.MÉTODOS: Participaram 696 idosos de ambos os sexos, sendo 600 mulheres e 96 homens, praticantes de exercícios físicos do Grupo de Estudos da Terceira Idade (GETI), Programa Viver Ativo e do Programa Saúde e Lazer. Para avaliar a resistência aeróbia, foi utilizado o TC6, conforme proposto por Rikli e Jones.Para o cálculo da distância percorrida prevista, foram utilizadas as equações de Enright & Sherrill, Troosters e Enright. Utilizou-se estatística descritiva e inferencial, com nível de significância de 5%.RESULTADOS: A média da distância percorrida prevista pelas equações foram 305,29±46,98 m, 529,05 ±50,31 m e 415,37±38,77 m, respectivamente. No TC6, a média foi de 513,05 ± 87,26 m. Observou-se correlação significativa (p< 0,001) entre o TC6 e as equações de Enright & Sherrill e Troosters. Na comparação entre os valores, nota-se que as equações de Enright & Sherrill e Enright subestimam e as de Troosters superestima a resistência aeróbia de idosos praticantes de exercícios físicos.CONCLUSÃO: As equações de referência para predição da distância percorrida no TC6 analisadas no presente estudo não refletem a resistência aeróbia de idosos praticantes de exercícios físicos. Novas equações e/ou variáveis devem ser incluídas para calcular com certa precisão a distância percorrida por idosos fisicamente ativos. Dessa forma, as equações analisadas no presente estudo devem ser utilizadas com cautela por pesquisadores e profissionais que lidam com este público no Brasil.

Abstract
This study investigated the association between hemodynamic variables and the 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) in adults with and without hypertension and explored the role of hemodynamic variables as predictors of 6MWD. Patients undergoing antihypertensive medication therapy (n=41) and sex-matched healthy subjects (n=41) were evaluated for their clinical status and cardiovascular risk factors. Two 6-minute walk tests were performed along an 18-m corridor with a 30-minute rest interval. The intraclass correlation (ICC) was high among patients (ICC=0.984 (0.965; 0.992), P<0.001) and controls (ICC=0.987 (0.832; 0.996), P<0.001). The patients presented 6MWD values that were significantly lower than those of healthy controls (338.8±112.8 vs. 388.0±66.7 m, P=0.010). In patients, the 6MWD was significantly and positively correlated with sex (0.737; P<0.001), height (0.502; P<0.001) and weight (0.303; P=0.027). In addition, negative and significant correlations were observed between 6MWD and the mean (-0.577; P<0.001), systolic (-0.521; P<0.001), diastolic (-0.505; P=0.001) and pulse (-0.353; P=0.015) pressures after simultaneous adjustment for age, body height and weight. The same behavior was observed in healthy controls (except for pulse pressure), albeit with lower correlation values. A regression model with sex, age, height and weight explained 52.2% (P<0.001) of the variance. The highest explained variance in patients (64.8%; P<0.001) and controls (56.5%; P<0.001) was observed after replacing the body weight with mean pressure in the model. The 6MWD is inversely associated with hemodynamic variables in both groups and is lower in patients with hypertension compared with healthy controls. Hemodynamic variables, particularly the mean pressure, should be included in prediction equations for 6MWD.
