Figure 1 Possible mechanisms underlying T-cell immune exhaustion in acute-on-chronic liver failure include persistent antigenic stimulation, metabolic abnormalities (such as mitochondrial damage), increased numbers of immunosuppressive cells, increased expression of inhibitory receptors, and elevated levels of immunosuppressive cytokines.
