Regulatory non-coding RNA (ncRNAs) are divided into two major groups based on transcript size, small ncRNAs such as microRNA, small interfering RNA and piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA), as well as long ncRNAs with size greater than 200 nt. Both small ncRNA and long ncRNA have important regulatory function in gene expression. miRNA: microRNA; siRNA: small interfering RNA; piRNA: piwi-interacting RNA.
