This review summarized the latest findings that COVID-19 exacerbate liver damage of liver diseases and the latest treatment recommendations for these kinds of patient. This review first pointed out that the SARS-CoV-2 infection caused a large proportion of patients with liver function abnormalities, and the patients with pre-existing liver disease (ALD, NAFLD, HBV or HCV infection) were more susceptible to the COVID-19 induced liver damage or drug-induced liver damage during the treatment. On the other hand, the author further proposed the mechanism of liver damage in this process, such as direct virus damage, cytokine storm, coagulative and fibrinolytic pathways. Finally, the author also listed the current recommendations for diagnosing and treating COVID-19 infection, in particular, for patients with pre-existing liver disease. However, there are also some ambiguities. For example, some of the data in Figure 1 showed the liver function abnormalities after COVID-19 infection, and others were the data about the liver damage in patients with pre-existing liver disease after COVID-19 infection.
