Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Scientific publications documented the use of plants from Genus Malva to treat inflammatory diseases and skin disorders by our ancestors. Malva parviflora L. has reported benefits for wound healing in traditional medicine; however, there is a lack of experimental study to validate these claims. AIM We initiated this study to explore the metabolites and verify the wound healing properties of M. parviflora using in vivo and in vitro models. MATERIALS AND METHODS Liquid chromatography electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC/ESI-MS/MS) was used to identify the ethanolic extract different metabolites. Additionally, total phenolic content was determined using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. To verify the extract wound healing potential, an in vivo rat wound excision model was employed. Round wounds (5 mm in diameter) were created by a sterile biopsy punch needle. The wounds were treated with plant extracts (2.5% and 5%) as well as a commercially available wound healing product (Mebo®) for 10 days. The results were assessed as follows: 1) Measuring the reduction% in wound area compared to the original wound size. 2) Evaluation of the levels of wound healing biomarkers, namely collagen type I (Col-1), alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), extracellular signal-regulated kinases-1 (ERK1), and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9) levels. 3) Performing histopathological examination of the wound tissue. The antioxidant properties of the M. parviflora leaves ethanolic extract were investigated using various assays: total antioxidant capacity (TAC), iron reducing power (IRP), 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), and 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radicals scavenging assays. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory activity was confirmed by calculating the inhibition percentages of protein denaturation and the activity of the proteinase enzyme. RESULTS Liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis revealed the presence of various secondary metabolites in M. parviflora ethanolic extract, including phenolic acids (cinnamic and ferulic acids), flavonoids (quercetin and "iso"rhamnetin monoglucuronides), fatty acids (hydroxy-octadecatrienoic and oxo-octadecatrienoic acids), in addition to chlorophyll derivatives and carotenoids (pheophorbide-a and lutein, respectively). Malva extracts significantly reduced wound size compared to untreated control group. The extracts also promoted wound healing by upregulating collagen I, α-SMA, and ERK1 levels, while downregulating MMP9 expression. Notably, the effect of 2.5% and 5% extracts was similar or exceeds those of Mebo®, supported by histopathological results. Finally, M. parviflora ethanolic extract exhibited antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potentials comparable to the used standards. CONCLUSION Our study provides evidence-based support for the wound healing properties of M. parviflora L. leaves ethanolic extract. This is further strengthened by the fact that many of the identified metabolites possess wound healing, antioxidant, and/or anti-inflammatory activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Enhancing crops' drought resilience is necessary to maintain productivity levels. Plants interact synergistically with microorganisms like Beauveria bassiana to improve drought tolerance. Therefore, the current study investigates the effects of biopriming with B. bassiana on drought tolerance in Malva parviflora plants grown under regular irrigation (90% water holding capacity (WHC)), mild (60% WHC), and severe drought stress (30% WHC). RESULTS The results showed that drought stress reduced the growth and physiological attributes of M. parviflora. However, those bioprimed with B. bassiana showed higher drought tolerance and enhanced growth, physiological, and biochemical parameters: drought stress enriched malondialdehyde and H2O2 contents. Conversely, exposure to B. bassiana reduced stress markers and significantly increased proline and ascorbic acid content under severe drought stress; it enhanced gibberellic acid and reduced ethylene. Bioprimed M. parviflora, under drought conditions, improved antioxidant enzymatic activity and the plant's nutritional status. Besides, ten Inter-Simple Sequence Repeat primers detected a 25% genetic variation between treatments. Genomic DNA template stability (GTS) decreased slightly and was more noticeable in response to drought stress; however, for drought-stressed plants, biopriming with B. bassiana retained the GTS. CONCLUSION Under drought conditions, biopriming with B. bassiana enhanced Malva's growth and nutritional value. This could attenuate photosynthetic alterations, up-regulate secondary metabolites, activate the antioxidant system, and maintain genome integrity.

Abstract
Acute colitis is characterised by an unpredictable onset and causes intestinal flora imbalance together with microbial migration, which leads to complex parenteral diseases. Dexamethasone, a classic drug, has side effects, so it is necessary to use natural products without side effects to prevent enteritis. Glycyrrhiza polysaccharide (GPS) is an α-d-pyranoid polysaccharide with anti-inflammatory effects; however, its anti-inflammatory mechanism in the colon remains unknown. This study investigated whether GPS reduces the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory response in acute colitis. The results revealed that GPS attenuated the upregulation of tumour necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6 in the serum and colon tissues and significantly reduced the malondialdehyde content in colon tissues. In addition, the 400 mg/kg GPS group showed higher relative expressions of occludin, claudin-1, and zona occludens-1 in colon tissues and lower concentrations of diamine oxidase, D-lactate, and endotoxin in the serum than the LPS group did, indicating that GPS improved the physical and chemical barrier functions of colon tissues. GPS increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria, such as Lactobacillus, Bacteroides, and Akkermansia, whereas pathogenic bacteria, such as Oscillospira and Ruminococcus were inhibited. Our findings indicate that GPS can effectively prevent LPS-induced acute colitis and exert beneficial effects on the intestinal health.

Malva parviflora Leaves and Fruits Mucilage as Natural Sources of Anti-Inflammatory, Antitussive and Gastro-Protective Agents: A Comparative Study Using Rat Models and Gas Chromatography. Abstract
Malva parviflora L., Little mallow, has been traditionally used as an alternative food source. It acts as a medicinal herb containing a potential source of mucilage thus herein; we aimed to assess the toxicity, anti-inflammatory, antitussive and gastro-protective actions of M. parviflora mucilage extracted from its leaves (MLM) and fruit (MFM). Toxicity studies were investigated by in vitro hemolytic assay whereas acute anti-inflammatory and antitussive activities were assessed by carrageenan-induced paw edema and sulphur dioxide induced cough model in rats, respectively. Gastro-protective effects were studied using ethanol induced acute and chronic gastric ulcer rat models. Their metabolic profiles were determined using gas chromatography. The results revealed that MLM and MFM were non-toxic towards human erythrocytes and their lethal doses were found to be greater than 5 g/kg. Pretreatment with MLM (500 mg/kg) and MFM (500 mg/kg) significantly reduced the carrageenan-induced paw thickness (p < 0.001). Maximum edema inhibition (%) was observed at 4 h in diclofenac sodium (39.31%) followed by MLM (27.35%) and MFM (15.68%). Animals pretreated with MLM (500 mg/kg) significantly lower the cough frequency in SO2 gas induced cough models in contrast to control. Moreover, MLM at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg reduced the ethanol induced gastric mucosal injuries in acute gastric ulcer models presenting ulcer inhibition of 23.04 and 38.74%, respectively. The chronic gastric ulcer model MFM (500 mg/kg) demonstrated a remarkable gastro-protective effect showing 63.52% ulcer inhibition and results were closely related to standard drug sucralfate. In both models, MLM and MFM decreased gastric juice volume and total acidity in addition to an increased gastric juice pH and gastric mucous content justifying an anti-secretary role of this mucilage that was further confirmed by histopathological examination. Meanwhile, GC analyses of the mucilage revealed their richness with natural as well as acidic monosaccharides. It is concluded that MLM and MFM can be used therapeutically for the management of inflammation, cough and gastric ulcer.

Abstract
Malva parviflora L. is an edible and medicinal herb containing mucilaginous cells in its leaves. Mucilage obtained from M. parviflora leaves (MLM) was extracted in distilled water (1:10 w/v) at 70 °C followed by precipitation with alcohol. Preliminary phytochemical tests were performed to assess the purity of the extracted mucilage. Results showed that the yield of mucilage was 7.50%, and it was free from starch, alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, steroids, lipids and heavy metals. MLM had 16.19% carbohydrates, 13.55% proteins and 4.76% amino acids, which indicate its high nutritional value. Physicochemical investigations showed that MLM is neutral and water-soluble, having 5.84% moisture content, 15.60% ash content, 12.33 swelling index, 2.57 g/g water-holding capacity and 2.03 g/g oil-binding capacity. The functional properties, including emulsion capacity, emulsion stability, foaming capacity and stability increased with increased concentrations. Micromeritic properties, such as bulk density, tapped density, Carr's index, Hausner ratio, and angle of repose, were found to be 0.69 g/cm3, 0.84 g/cm3, 17.86%, 1.22 and 28.5, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that MLM is an amorphous powder possessing particles of varying size and shape; meanwhile, rheological studies revealed the pseudoplastic behavior of MLM. The thermal transition process of MLM revealed by a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermogram, occurring at a reasonable enthalpy change (∆H), reflects its good thermal stability. The presence of functional groups characteristic of polysaccharides was ascertained by the infrared (IR) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analyses. GC revealed the presence of five neutral monosaccharides; namely, galactose, rhamnose, arabinose, glucose and mannose, showing 51.09, 10.24, 8.90, 1.80 and 0.90 mg/g of MLM, respectively. Meanwhile, galacturonic acid is the only detected acidic monosaccharide, forming 15.06 mg/g of MLM. It showed noticeable antioxidant activity against the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical with an IC50 value of 154.27 µg/mL. It also prevented oxidative damage to DNA caused by the Fenton reagent, as visualized in gel documentation system. The sun protection factor was found to be 10.93 ± 0.15 at 400 µg/mL. Thus, MLM can be used in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry and as a therapeutic agent due to its unique properties.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
M. verticillata (Malvaceae) is a medicinal plant used in the treatment of wounds, boils, and liver injuries. The plant leaf extracts possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Doxorubicin (DOX) is a potent chemotherapeutic agent used in the treatment of various cancers, but its clinical use is limited by acute and chronic cardiotoxicity. This study aims to evaluate the possible cardioprotective role of Malva verticillata against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity.
Method
Thirty-six male albino rats were divided into six groups, (n = 6): G1: normal control (was given 1 ml/kg of NaCl, 0.9%, twice a week IP), G2: cardiotoxic group (was given 1 mg/kg of DOX twice a week IP). G3 and G4 were given 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg of M. verticillata, respectively, while G5 and G6: were given 250, 500 mg/kg of M. verticillata PO and 1 mg/kg IP of DOX. for 6 weeks. Total body weight was taken weekly and Heart: body weight ratio was calculated. Blood samples were collected for determination of serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and Troponin, the hearts were removed and processed for histopathological examination.
Results
M. verticillata showed a significant dose-dependent reduction in the cardiac enzyme levels, LDH, CPK activities, and Troponin levels. The histopathological studies in rat hearts also supported those findings.
Conclusion
The present study suggests that M. verticillata may have a novel and worthwhile cardioprotective effect against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity.

Abstract
The ulcerative colitis (UC) is a typical inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) causing great damages, while strictosamide (STR) is a natural alkaloid that possesses strong anti-inflammatory property in infection and inflammation-related diseases. Our study is aimed at evaluating the anti-inflammatory activity of STR in the course of UC. Briefly, male Balb/c mice were treated with 3.5% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) for 6 consecutive days to establish an acute model of UC, and the administration of gradient concentrations of STR was subsequently performed. Accordingly, colonic pathological alterations including the reduced ratio of colon weight/length, decreased disease activity index (DAI), and attenuated H&E damage were found in UC mice after STR treatment. Based on the analyses of real-time PCR and western blot, downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) was also determined in the colonic tissue of UC mice after the treatment of STR. ELISA and immunohistochemical staining further suggest the relief of inflammation in UC mice with decreased expressions of MPO and iNOS after STR treatment. In addition, STR was also validated to significantly inhibit NF-κB signaling in UC mice by western blot and Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay (EMSA). Meanwhile, restricted inflammation was also determined in STR-treated IEC6 and HT-29 cells. The utilization of PDTC, an inhibitor of NF-κB, further demonstrated that STR ameliorated the inflammation by inhibiting the NF-κB signaling in vitro. In summary, our study suggests that STR could be a potential candidate for IBD therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibition has been found to be effective in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Previous studies have reported that Cinnamyl sulfonamide hydroxamate derivatives possess non-selective HDAC inhibition. OBJECTIVE The present study was designed to screen three selected Cinnamyl sulfonamide hydroxamate derivatives, NMJ-1, NMJ-2, and NMJ3, for in vitro anti-inflammatory response by assessing the expression of pNF-κB in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory changes on RAW 264.7 cells, and in vivo anti-inflammatory response in acetic acid (AA) and 2.4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced colitis models in Wistar rats. METHOD AA-induced colitis was produced in Wistar rats by intra-colonic administration of 1 ml AA. DNCBinduced colitis was produced by spraying 250 μL DNCB in acetone (20g/L) on the nape of the rats for 14 days, followed by the intracolonic administration on day 15. Drugs were administered for three days after the induction of colitis. RESULTS In vitro anti-inflammatory effect was observed by NMJ1 and NMJ2 through a significant decrease in pNF-κB overexpression-induced by LPS. Similar effect was observed in anti-colitis response by NMJ2 in both models by reversing the colitis-induced changes in length, weight, anti-oxidant profile and histopathology of the colon. CONCLUSION NMJ2 was found to be most effective among the tested compounds as an anti-inflammatory agent in both in vitro and in vivo inflammatory studies.

Abstract
Background: Antioxidant therapy has gained attention for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). The excessive generation of reactive oxygen/nitrogen species in the gastrointestinal tract increases oxidative stress, thereby leading to antioxidant defense depletion, lipid peroxidation, inflammation, tissue damage, and ulceration. Spirulina platensis (SP) and honey are excellent sources of potent antioxidants such as polyphenols and other bioactive compounds. We aimed to investigate antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of honey and SP in comparison with sulfasalazine (SSZ) and mesalazine on acetic acid-induced colitis (AA-colitis) in rats. Materials and Methods: Fifty-six Sprague Dawley male rats were allocated to seven groups, with each group comprising eight rats. UC was induced, except in normal controls (NC). All groups received oral treatments for seven days. The normal saline solution of 2 mL was intrarectally administered to the NC group. The AA-colitis and NC groups received 2 mL acetic acid intrarectally as a single dose and 2 mL normal saline for seven consecutive days orally. The mesalazine group received 100 mg/kg mesalazine, the SSZ group 360 mg/kg SSZ, the honey or H group 1 mL honey diluted with 1 mL distilled water, the SH group 1g/kg SP and 1 mL honey, and the SP group 1g/kg SP. After clinical activity score assessment, the rats were sacrificed. Colonic weight/length ratio, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), myeloperoxidase (MPO), nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), reduced glutathione (GSH), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were measured. Colonic histopathological changes were observed microscopically. Results: Treatment of UC with SP, honey, and combination regimen significantly reduced TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, MDA, MPO, NO, and PGE2, and increased TAC, GSH, GPx, and SOD in interventional groups compared to the AA-colitis group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Honey and SP might be beneficial food supplements for medical nutrition therapy in UC.

Abstract
Indirubin and isatin have been used in the treatment of inflammatory diseases due to their anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to evaluate the combined effect of indirubin and isatin on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis (UC). UC was induced by the administration of 3% (w/v) DSS solution, and then the model mice were administered indirubin (10 mg/kg body mass) and (or) isatin (10 mg/kg body mass) by gavage once daily for 7 days. The results showed that indirubin and isatin, individually or combined, significantly inhibited weight loss, lowered disease activity index (DAI), ameliorated pathological changes, decreased the levels of pro-inflammatory mediators and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, increased the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines and Foxp3, suppressed CD4+ T cell infiltration, and inhibited oxidative stress and epithelial cell apoptosis. Additionally, indirubin and isatin, both individually and combined, can also inhibit activation of the NF-κB and MAPK pathways induced by DSS. The protective effect of combination therapy against UC was superior to that of single-agent treatment. These results suggest that indirubin combined with isatin attenuates DSS-induced UC, and changes to the NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways may mediate the protective effects of indirubin and isatin in UC.

Abstract
In this study, we aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and protective effects of Ziziphus spina-christi fruit extract (ZFE) against acetic acid (AcOH)-induced colitis in rats. Before a single AcOH instillation, ZFE (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg/day) was administered for 5 days by oral gavage. Pretreatment with ZFE at different doses suppressed the spread of inflammation and inhibited mucosal damage; in addition, it reduced ulcer size and mitigated colitis markers. Administration of ZFE (400 mg/kg) resulted in a greater reduction of inflammatory colonic injury than that after reference drug, mesalazine (MLZ), administration. In addition, ZFE not only histopathologically ameliorated AcOH-induced colitis but also restored the balance between the oxidants and antioxidants. Furthermore, ZFE effectively modulated the mRNA expression of redox-sensitive transcription factors, such as nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 and heme oxygenase-1, downregulated the expression of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase, and upregulated that of vascular endothelial growth factor A and interleukin-1β in AcOH-induced colitis in rats. In conclusion, our results suggested that ZFE could prevent the development of chronic experimental colitis in rats; therefore, it could be considered as an alternative and/or additive therapeutic approach for the management of inflammatory bowel disease.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the efficacy and safety of stellate ganglion block for the treatment of patients with chronic ulcerative colitis.
METHODS A total of 120 randomly selected patients with chronic ulcerative colitis treated in Cangzhou Central Hospital from January 2014 to January 2016 were included in this study. These patients were divided into two groups: control group (n = 30), patients received oral sulfasalazine treatment; experimental group (n = 90), patients received stellate ganglion block treatment. Clinical symptoms and disease activity in these two groups were compared before and after treatment using endoscopy. Blood was collected from patients on day 0, 10, 20 and 30 after treatment. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed to determine interleukin-8 (IL-8) level. The changes in IL-8 level post-treatment in the two groups were compared using repeated measures analysis of variance.
RESULTS After treatment, clinical symptoms and disease activity were shown to be alleviated by endoscopy in both the control and experimental groups. However, patients in the control group did not have obvious abdominal pain relief. In addition, the degree of pain relief in the experimental group was statistically better than that in the control group (P < 0.05). Ten days after treatment, IL-8 level was found to be significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). In addition, adverse events were significantly higher in the control group than in the experimental group, and the difference was statistically significant (χ2 = 33.215, P = 0.000).
CONCLUSION The application of stellate ganglion block effectively improves treatment efficacy in chronic ulcerative colitis, relieves clinical symptoms in patients, and reduces the level of inflammatory factors. Furthermore, this approach also had a positive impact on the disease to a certain extent.

Abstract
In our previous studies we showed antitumor and anti-inflammatory activities of protein kinases inhibitor pyrrol derivate 1-(4-Cl-benzyl)-3-Cl-4-(CF3-fenylamino)-1H-pyrrol-2,5-dione (MI-1) on rat colon cancer model. Therefore anti-inflammatory effect of MI-1 on rat acetic acid induced ulcerative colitis (UC) model was aimed to be discovered. The anti-inflammatory effects of MI-1 (2.7 mg/kg daily) compared to reference drug Prednisolone (0.7 mg/kg daily) after 14-day usage were evaluated on macro- and light microscopy levels and expressed in 21-grade scale. Redox status of bowel mucosa was also estimated. It was shown that in UC group the grade of total injury (GTI) was equal to 9.6 (GTIcontrol = 0). Increase of malonic dialdehyde (MDA) by 89% and protein carbonyl groups (PCG) by 60% and decrease of superoxide dismutase (SOD) by 40% were also observed. Prednisolone decreased GTI to 3 and leveled SOD activity, but MDA and PCG remained higher than control ones by 52% and 42%, respectively. MI-1 restored colon mucosa integrity and decreased mucosa inflammation down to GTI = 0.5 and leveled PCG and SOD. Thus, MI-1 possessed anti-inflammatory properties, which were more expressed that Prednisolone ones, as well as normalized mucosa redox balance, and so has a prospect for correction of inflammatory processes.

Abstract
One new oleanolic acid derivative, 2α,3β,23α,29α tetrahydroxyolean-12(13)-en-28-oic acid (1) was isolated from the aerial parts of Malva parviflora. Their structure was characterized by spectroscopic methods. The hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic activities of 1 was analyzed in in streptozotocin (STZ)-nicotinamide-induced type 2 diabetes in mice (MD) and type 1 diabetes in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice (SD). Triterpene was administered orally at doses of 20 mg/kg for 4 weeks. Organ weight, body weight, glucose, fasting insulin, cholesterol-related lipid profile parameters, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), serum alkaline phosphatase (SALP), glucokinase, hexokinase, glucose-6-phosphatase activities and glycogen in liver were measured after 4 weeks of treatment. The results indicated that 1 regulate glucose metabolism, lipid profile, lipid peroxidation, increased body weight, glucokinase and hexokinase activities inhibited triglycerides, total cholesterol, low density lipoproteins level, SGOT, SGPT, SALP, glycogen in liver and glucose-6-phosphatase. In addition, improvement of insulin resistance and protective effect for pancreatic β-cells, also 1 may changes the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine (IL-6 and TNF-α levels) and enzymes (PAL2, COX-2, and LOX). The results suggest that 1 has hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic, anti-inflammatory, activities, improve insulin resistance and hepatic enzymes in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice.
