Abstract
BACKGROUND Bulk-type conductive metal-organic frameworks (c-MOFs) had been applied to modify the electrode and used in electrochemical sensing because of the high conductive properties. But which still suffer from low mass permeability, restricted active site exposure, and poor accessibility due to the coordination saturation at metal sites in the bulk-type c-MOF. Recent studies have demonstrated that transforming bulk-type MOFs into MOFs nanosheets (NSs) can maximize the exposure of active sites and mass transfer. However, c-MOF NSs have rarely been applied in electrochemical sensing. RESULTS This study presents NSs type c-MOF Cu3(benzenehexathiol) (CuBHT), synthesized using a simple sacrificial template method. CuBHT NSs were modified onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to prepare CuBHT NSs/GCE, which was then applied to sense the model target ascorbic acid (AA), the system exhibits high sensitivity of 1.521 mA mM-1 cm-2 and a wide linear range of 1-789 μM, low detection limit of 0.46 μM. The sensitivity is 1.90 times higher than that of bulk-type CuBHT nanoparticles (NPs) modified GCE, which can be attributed to the CuBHT NSs having more exposed Cu sites on their surfaces. CuBHT NSs/GCE was then used to monitor AA levels in human sweat during daily activities or exercise, and the results indicated high reliability compared to the vitamin C ASA kit method. SIGNIFICANCE The design of c-MOF CuBHT NSs/GCE lead to better performance in terms of sensitivity and low detection limit in AA sensing compared to bulk-type nanoparticles. The AA sensing mechanism based on CuBHT was investigated, and the sensing system was demonstrated by detecting AA in sweat. This work advances both the fundamental understanding and practical applications of c-MOF NSs in AA sensing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer, recognized as a significant global public health issue, exhibits a notably elevated prevalence of depression among its patient population. This study aimed to construct a nomogram to predict depression risk in cancer patients. METHODS In this study, the training set comprises 70 % of the dataset, while the test set comprises 30 %. On the training set, we employed the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression in conjunction with multivariable logistic regression to identify key variables, subsequently constructing a prediction model. ROC curves, calibration tests, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate model performance. RESULTS A total of 2604 participants were included in this study. The nomogram predictors encompassed age, poverty-income ratio (PIR), sleep disorder, and food security. We have developed a web-based dynamic nomogram incorporating these factors (available at https://xiaoshuweiya.shinyapps.io/DynNomapp/). The area under the model's ROC curve (AUC) was 0.803 and 0.766 when evaluated on the training and test sets, respectively. These AUC values highlight the model's robustness and reliability in making accurate predictions across different datasets. The calibration curves demonstrated consistency between the model's predicted and actual results. Additionally, the decision curve analysis further substantiated the potential clinical utility of the nomograms. CONCLUSIONS This study developed a nomogram to help clinicians identify high-risk populations for depression among cancer patients, providing a scientific method for early detection and assessment of depression risk.

Abstract
Trypsin is a representative member of serine protease family of peptidases. Its premature activation leads to develop several ailments, such as pancreatitis and colorectal cancer. The available therapies are few in numbers and possessed several side effects. Therefore, searching of new trypsin inhibitors has a great importance in drug discovery. In the current study, we have discovered the inhibitory potential of vitamin B6 and its commercially available analogues; pyridoxine (1), pyridoxal (2), pyridoxamine (3) and pyridoxal phosphate (4), against trypsin through in vitro and crystallographic approaches. Compound 1 (pyridoxine) and 2 (pyridoxal) showed significant inhibitory potential against trypsin with the IC50 of 234.99 ± 1.41 and 235.98 ± 1.41 μM, respectively and they did not show any significant difference in their IC50 values (p > 0.05). The mechanistic studies reveal that both molecules showed noncompetitive mode of inhibition against trypsin enzyme. The crystallographic studies reveal the binding of compounds 1 and 2 within the S1 pocket of enzyme in two different conformations. Both conformations were stabilized with hydrogen bonding. They mostly showed interactions with Ser195, a key residue of the active site.

Abstract
The function of the immune system is not only dependent on factors like genetics, age, the environment, and exposure to infectious agents and allergens but also on our microbiota and our diet. It has been known for centuries that food can influence health and vulnerability to infection. This is especially true for infants, young children, and the elderly. This review focuses on how nutrition can support immune function from gestation to school-aged children. Immune support begins during pregnancy by the mother's diet and transfer of nutritional components as well as antibodies to her fetus. After birth, breastfeeding is of crucial importance for immune development as well as for the development of the intestinal microbiota of an infant. If breastfeeding is not possible, early-life formulas are an alternative. These can provide several of the functionalities of breastmilk, as well as the key nutrients a child needs. New foods are introduced during and after weaning, and after this period, children switch to consuming a normal diet. However, due to circumstances, children can be malnourished. This can range from severe protein/energy malnutrition to micronutrient deficiencies and obesity, all of which can affect the function of the immune system. This narrative review describes the immune challenges in early life, explores breastfeeding and early life nutrition, and provides mechanistic insight into the relative contribution of macronutrients, micronutrients and other immunomodulatory food components that can support immune function in early life.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Fermented foods promote digestion and may help prevent chronic diseases. However, studies on their relationship with health indicators in Korea remain limited. This study aimed to identify fermented food consumption patterns among middle-aged Korean adults and to analyze their association with high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and chronic disease. Methods: This study analyzed 7111 adults aged 40-64 years from the 6th-7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES, 2015-2018). hs-CRP values were categorized as <1 mg/L, 1-3 mg/L, and ≥3 mg/L. Latent profile analysis (LPA) classified fermented foods into 10 categories using Mplus 8.11, with LMR-LRT significance and entropy ≥ 0.7 determining the number of classes. Logistic regression analysis using SPSS 29.0 was conducted to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for hs-CRP and chronic disease (p < 0.05). Results: LPA identified four consumption patterns: (LFP), (FABP), (FDP), and (FGP). hs-CRP was highest in LFP (1.0 ± 1.2 mg/L), followed by FABP (0.8 ± 1.1 mg/L) and FDP and FGP (0.9 ± 1.2 mg/L) (p < 0.001). Compared to LFP, FGP had ORs of 0.810 (95% CI: 0.690-0.950, p < 0.005) for hypertension and 0.586 (95% CI: 0.459-0.747, p < 0.001) for diabetes. For dyslipidemia, ORs were 0.832 (95% CI: 0.720-0.962, p < 0.005) for FABP and 0.832 (95% CI: 0.719-0.962, p < 0.005) for FDP. Conclusions: This study classified fermented food consumption patterns and analyzed their association with hs-CRP and chronic disease. FGP and FDP showed lower inflammation and reduced odds of hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia compared to LFP. These findings highlight the potential of healthy fermented food consumption patterns to support inflammation control and chronic disease prevention.

Abstract
Background: COVID-19 has become the center of attention since its outbreak in December 2019. Despite the discovery of its preventive vaccine, role of healthy immune system is undebatable. Functional foods are continuously hunted as a promising option for a safe natural therapeutic treatment.Purpose: This review demonstrates how functional foods can boost host immune system, promote antiviral operation, and synthesize biologically effective molecules against SARS-COV-2.Research Methodology: For current review, online search was conducted for nature-based functional immune boosters against SARS-COV-2.Conclusion: Functional foods, alongside a healthy lifestyle, fortifies the human immune system and could all help to dramatically lower the cost burden of COVID-19, the suffering of the patients, and the mortality rates worldwide.

Abstract
The immune system, sports injuries, physical activity and clinical sports nutrition are closely linked. Inadequate nutrition and intense stress in athletes increase the risk of immune dysfunction, injury and disease, while injury reduces the positive effects of physical activity, creating a vicious cycle affecting health and performance. Nutritional support is key to reducing the risk of injury, speeding up recovery and shortening rehabilitation. The intake of energy, protein, carbohydrates, fats and micronutrients should be adapted to the needs following injury. Quality nutrition is preferred over the use of dietary supplements, which are limited to cases of identified deficiencies (e.g. vitamin D or iron deficiencies). Health professionals with knowledge of clinical nutrition have a key role to play in injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, and nutritional interventions are an indispensable part of a holistic approach to athletes' health.

Abstract
The fig tree is a multifaceted plant with a wide range of nutritional and health benefits. The employment of the Aksoy weighted classification method, predicated on biological characteristics pertaining to the ripening period, in conjunction with pomological and chemical characteristics of the fresh fruit, yielded favorable outcomes in the assessment of fresh fig quality from eastern Morocco, particularly the OnK Hmam (718) and Chetoui (720) varieties, indicating high quality. From a commercial perspective, the weight of figs is a key factor in determining their value. The study examined the weight of five different varieties of fresh figs, revealing significant variations in their average weight. The Malha fig recorded the lowest average weight of 30.24 g, while the Onk Hmam fig exhibited the highest average weight of 57.25 g. Fresh Chetoui has the highest content of total sugar (15.04%), titratable acid (0.272%), potassium (266.8 mg/100 g), sodium (0.580 mg/100 g), calcium (75.20 mg/100 g) and phosphorus (30.04 mg). Fresh Onk Hmam has the highest fibre concentration (2.60%). Fresh Bounacer has the highest magnesium content (20.52 mg/100 g). Fresh Ghoudane has the highest concentration of iron (1.24 mg/100 g), polyphenols (275.6 GAE/100 g FW) and flavonoids (120.3 QE/100 g FW) among the samples. As fresh figs are seasonal and perishable, the most effective method of preserving their nutritional content and health benefits over an extended period is through the drying process. The primary objective of the drying process is to dehydrate the figs and reduce their water activity to an acceptable level. In addition, the storage and transport costs incurred are economically and commercially advantageous. Sun-dried goudane and chetoui are characterized by their elevated sugar, fiber, mineral, and antioxidant content. Additionally, they exhibit significant volume and weight reduction, thereby reducing packaging requirements and rendering them optimal for use as dietary supplements. In addition, they meet the required criteria of ≤ 26.0% for dry matter and the minimum diameter of 18 mm for black fig (Ghoudane) and 22 mm for white fig (Chetoui) of the European standards. However, it should be noted that their marketability and commercial quality are limited to Category I (65 < maximum allowable fruit count per kilogram ≤ 120), which includes lower quality designations. Dried Ghoudane was found to contain higher levels of polyphenols (380.9 mg GAE/100 g DW) and flavonoids (100.1 mg QE/100 g DW) than dried Chetoui (305.9 mg GAE/100 g DW and 81.90 mg EQ/100 g DW). After sun drying of fresh Ghoudane and Chetoui, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed that they had increased levels of phenolic content, titratable acid and minerals. However, total flavonoid content, vitamin C content and soluble solids decreased.

Background/Objectives: The factors associated with post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) are not yet fully understood in developing countries. Our objective was to investigate the relationship between food consumption and the occurrence of PASC in Brazilian elderly people. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 1322 elderly people aged 60 or over, infected with SARS-CoV-2 in 2020, living in the state of Roraima in Brazil. Using the Brazilian National Food and Nutrition Surveillance System (SISVAN, in Portuguese) tool, food consumption markers were evaluated. The persistence of post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 was assessed three months after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Poisson regression with robust variance was performed to estimate the prevalence ratio (PR) with a 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Results: Fruit consumption [PR 0.92; 95% CI: 0.85-0.99] was associated with a lower occurrence of PASC, with a significant interaction in individuals aged 60 to 69 years old, not hospitalized, and those without chronic kidney disease. In addition, the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages [PR 1.23; 95% CI: 1.12-1.35], sandwich cookies, sweets, and treats [PR 1.12; 95% CI 1.03-1.22] was positively associated with the occurrence of PASC in the elderly people, with a significant interaction in individuals living in the capital and without hypercholesterolemia. Conclusions: Unhealthy food consumption was associated with PASC in Brazilian elderly people. An improvement in the diet quality of elderly people is necessary to minimize health complications in PASC.

Abstract
The lungs play a vital role in maintaining homeostasis by facilitating gas exchange and serving as a structural and immune barrier. External factors, including nutrition, lifestyle, and environmental exposures, profoundly influence normal lung function and contribute to the development, progression, and prognosis of various respiratory diseases. Deficiencies in key micronutrients, such as vitamins A, D, and C, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, can impair the integrity of the epithelial lining, compromising the lungs' defense mechanisms and increasing susceptibility to injury and disease. Obesity and physical inactivity further disrupt respiratory function by inducing structural changes in the chest wall and promoting a pro-inflammatory state. Environmental pollutants further worsen oxidative damage and activate inflammatory pathways. Addressing these modifiable factors through interventions such as dietary optimization, physical activity programs, and strategies to reduce environmental exposure offers promising avenues for preserving lung function and preventing disease progression. This review examines the molecular pathways through which nutrition, lifestyle, and environmental influences impact lung homeostasis.

Abstract
Viral infections have been a severe challenge for global public health, and viral pneumonia is becoming increasingly critical in the post-pandemic era. Observational and basic studies have demonstrated a strong link between host nutrient status and anti-viral immune responses, and nutritional supplements were shown to improve the prognosis of viral infectious diseases. However, there is limited research on the relationship between essential micronutrients and the susceptibility to viral pneumonia. In addition, current studies are often confounded by biases and reverse causality, undermining their reliability. In this study, to fill the gap, we employed Mendelian randomization to investigate the causal relationship between supplementation of vitamins and minerals and the susceptibility to viral pneumonia. Our analysis found that vitamin B6 is a protective factor against viral pneumonia, while selenium supplementation is a risk factor. These findings provide insights for the use of dietary supplements and the prevention and control of viral pneumonia, especially when micronutrient supplementation is used as an adjunctive therapy for viral infections.

Abstract
A 12-week aquaculture trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of vitamin B6 on the intestinal health of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Six feeds with a vitamin B6 content of 2.03 (control group), 2.91, 3.30, 6.03, 9.53, and 21.79 mg/kg were prepared. The results were as follows. Regarding digestive efficiency, the 9.53 mg/kg group showed significantly higher activities of AMY, LPS, and TRY compared to the control group; the 6.03 mg/kg group exhibited increased AKP and Na+/K+ ATPase activities. Regarding immunity, the 6.03 mg/kg group had markedly higher relative expressions of zo-1 and occ than the control group; the 9.53 mg/kg group showed significantly higher relative expressions of il-10, tgf-β, igm, and cd83, while il-8 and tnf-α were notably lower, and nf-κb was noticeably decreased in 21.79 mg/kg group. For antioxidant capacity, the 6.03 mg/kg group had markedly higher activities of CAT, SOD, GSH-Px, and T-AOC levels, compared to the control group; the MDA level in the control group was markedly higher than in the other groups. The relative expressions of nrf2, cat, Cu-Zn sod, and gpx were highest in 9.53 mg/kg group and significantly higher than in the control group. In conclusion, an appropriate level of vitamin B6 in the feed is vital for protecting the intestinal health of largemouth bass.

Abstract
During the COVID-19 pandemic, dietary habits in the population changed and sometimes deviated from healthy eating patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet. Based on reports on the quality of the diet of respondents to studies conducted at the beginning of the pandemic, it could be concluded that these new dietary habits are unfavorable for a good prognosis and the course of any disease and its severity of symptoms. This study decided to confront these assumptions with the results of people who had COVID-19. Background/Objectives: This study aimed to assess the associations between dietary patterns and the occurrence of hospitalization and gastrointestinal disorders among patients diagnosed with COVID-19. Methods: This study included 550 respondents who completed a survey up to 8 months after being diagnosed with COVID-19. The survey included 62 items from the FFQ-6®, GSRS, PAC-SYM and FACT-G7 standardized questionnaires. Results: Two dietary patterns (DPs) were identified: 'Processed high fat/sugar/salt/meat/dairy/potatoes' and 'Semi-vegetarian'. Higher adherence to the 'Processed' DP was associated with higher odds of hospitalization due to COVID-19, a more severe course of the disease, and the highest intensity of gastrointestinal symptoms. Higher adherence to the 'Semi-vegetarian' DP was associated with lower odds of hospitalization due to COVID-19, a less severe course of the disease, and the lowest intensity of gastrointestinal symptoms. Conclusions: This study showed a strong harmful effect of high adherence to a processed dietary pattern on an increased incidence of hospitalization and gastrointestinal disorders among northwestern Polish adults during the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the importance of a healthy diet.

Abstract
Omega-3 fatty acids (ω3 FAs) are essential components of cell membranes that also serve as precursors of numerous regulatory molecules. α-Linolenic acid (ALA), one of the most important ω3 FAs in plants, is synthesized in both the plastid and extraplastidial compartments. FA desaturase 3 (FAD3) is an extraplastidial enzyme that converts linoleic acid (LA) to ALA. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that FAD3 proteins are distinct from FAD7 and FAD8 desaturases, which convert LA to ALA in plastids. Structural analysis of FAD3 proteins indicated a positive relationship between enzymatic activity and transmembrane pore length and width. An inverse relationship between temperature and ALA biosynthesis was also evident, with ALA accumulation decreasing with increasing temperature. These findings suggest that certain FAD3 enzymes are more effective at converting LA to ALA than others. This information could potentially be used to engineer crop plants with higher levels of ALA.

Abstract
We assessed the association of serum metabolites with the occurrence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in middle-aged and elderly individuals, explored the value of metabolomics in predicting MACE, and compared the distinctions in MACE risk-related metabolic biomarkers between middle-aged and elderly groups. Among the participants of the UK Biobank who underwent baseline assessment through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomic profiling of 168 serum metabolites and had complete covariates and clinical lipid parameters, we included those without a previous diagnosis of ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, heart failure, or cardiac arrest and not on lipid-lowering medications. Relevant covariates included sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, clinical information, and fasting time. Cox regression gave adjusted hazard ratios for metabolites, including the concentrations of various lipoprotein particles, compositional profiles of different lipoproteins, ketone bodies, amino acids, fatty acids, and additional low-molecular-weight metabolic biomarkers. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was applied to these metabolites to screen characteristic metabolic variables. Selected feature metabolic biomarkers were added to the established model for predicting MACE risk; risk differentiation (C-statistic) and reclassification (continuous net reclassification improvement [NRI], integrated differentiation index [IDI]) were evaluated. This study included 54,561 UK Biobank participants (34,797 middle-aged adults and 19,764 elderly adults) and was followed for a median of more than 12 years. Of these, there are 1799 middle-aged individuals and 2527 elderly individuals incident of MACE (ischemic heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular deaths). After adjusting for relevant covariates, Cox regression yielded metabolic biomarkers associated with the occurrence of MACE in the population (false discovery rate controlled P < 0.05). In the elderly, the metabolites associated with increased MACE risk were notably diminished compared to the middle-aged; and the elderly group underscored the protective function of medium and small HDL and their constituents, docosahexaenoic acid, and glycine. The more comprehensive model, which additionally includes the feature metabolic biomarkers, demonstrated enhanced discriminatory power and predictive accuracy for MACE occurrence among middle-aged individuals, evidenced by improved C-statistics (from 0.711 [95% CI 0.699-0.722] to 0.723 [0.711-0.734]), a continuous NRI of 0.247 [0.207-0.315], and an absolute IDI of 0.005 [0.004-0.008]. Its evaluation value is superior to that in the elderly. Our study explored the association of circulating metabolites with MACE risk in middle-aged and elderly adults and made comparisons. Metabolomic insights have revealed biomarkers associated with new-onset MACE in different age populations, highlighting the value of protective metabolites in the elderly. This provides instrumental information to possibly implement precision medicine for preventing MACE.

Abstract
This review will provide an overview of the immune system and then describe the effects of frailty, obesity, specific micronutrients and the gut microbiota on immunity and susceptibility to infection including data from the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic where relevant. A key role for the immune system is providing host defence against pathogens. Impaired immunity predisposes to infections and to more severe infections and weakens the response to vaccination. A range of nutrients, including many micronutrients, play important roles in supporting the immune system to function. The immune system can decline in later life and this is exaggerated by frailty. The immune system is also weakened with obesity, generalised undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies, which all result in increased susceptibility to infection. Findings obtained during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic support what was already known about the effects of ageing, frailty and obesity on immunity and susceptibility to infection. Observational studies conducted during the pandemic also support previous findings that multiple micronutrients including vitamins C, D and E, zinc and selenium and long-chain n-3 fatty acids are important for immune health, but whether these nutrients can be used to treat those already with coronavirus disease discovered in 2019 (COVID-19), particularly if already hospitalised, is uncertain from current inconsistent or scant evidence. There is gut dysbiosis in patients with COVID-19 and studies with probiotics report clinical improvements in such patients. There is an inverse association between adherence to a healthy diet and risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and hospitalisation with COVID-19 which is consistent with the effects of individual nutrients and other dietary components. Addressing frailty, obesity and micronutrient insufficiency will be important to reduce the burden of future pandemics and nutritional considerations need to be a central part of the approach to preventing infections, optimising vaccine responses and promoting recovery from infection.

Abstract
The scientific evidence supporting recommendations for dietary supplement use to prevent or treat coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‑19) is not well‑established. This cohort study investigates the relationship between dietary supplement usage and COVID‑19 symptoms among 27,181 adults tested for COVID‑19. Using data from surveys following COVID‑19 testing, conducted by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, associations between dietary supplement usage, symptomatology, and COVID‑19 status were explored. The prevalence of supplement consumption among symptomatic individuals was significant, with non‑Hispanic (NH)‑White individuals showing higher usage rates. Among those testing positive for COVID‑19, mainly asymptomatic cases, dietary supplement usage was increased (7.8%), suggesting a proactive approach to supplementation. Symptomatic individuals with confirmed COVID‑19 also showed heightened dietary supplement usage (37.9%), indicating a response to perceived therapeutic benefits. Notably, respiratory symptoms such as cough (46.2%), fever (31.4%), and shortness of breath (8.9%) correlated consistently with increased dietary supplement usage across different time points. Despite limitations such as varying test sensitivities and potential selection biases, this study offers valuable insights into individual health‑seeking behaviors during the pandemic. Findings emphasize the importance of targeted public health interventions and education to address disparities in dietary supplement usage and promote evidence‑based approaches to dietary supplementation. Further research is warranted to understand better the motivations and implications of dietary supplement usage in the context of the pandemic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of probiotics and micronutrients in improving immune system function and response to vaccination has been proven. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the effects of probiotics enriched with micronutrients on the immunogenicity of PastoCovac® vaccine. METHODS The probiotic supplement BioBoost® and PastoCovac® vaccine, which contain six expressed Receptor- binding Domains (RBD) and conjugated with tetanus toxin, were administered concurrently. The safety and efficacy were assessed by determining Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody titers to RBD and cytokines, mRNA expression of Toll-like Receptors (TLRs) 5, and clinical symptoms. RESULTS Results revealed that the administration of the probiotics enriched with micronutrients and vitamins for 14 days before the first vaccine dose, followed by continued supplementation for 14 days after the first dose, and in conjunction with the second vaccine dose, yielded the most significant elevation in Interleukin 4 (IL-4), Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF alpha), Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), and anti-SARS-CoV-2 RBD IgG levels within the supernatant samples collected from spleen cultures with the highest expression of TLR5 genes in intestinal samples, compared to the control group. CONCLUSION Our results indicated that the inclusion of probiotics enriched with micronutrients and vitamins significantly enhanced the immunogenicity of the PastoCovac® vaccine. Based on the recommendation to administer third and fourth vaccine doses, particularly for vulnerable and elderly individuals, the utilization of supplements containing probiotics is expected to favorably influence immune responses.

Abstract
Immunosenescence, the slow degradation of immune function over time that is a hallmark and driver of aging, makes older people much more likely to be killed by common infections (such as flu) than young adults, but it also contributes greatly to rates of chronic inflammation in later life. Such micro nutrients are crucial for modulating effective immune responses and their deficiencies have been associated with dysfunctional immunity in the elderly. In this review, we specifically focused on the contribution of major micro nutrients (Vitamins A, D and E, Vitamin C; Zinc and Selenium) as immunomodulators in ageing population especially related to inflame-ageing process including autoimmunity. This review will cover these hologenomic interactions, including how micro nutrients can modulate immune cell function and/or cytokine production to benefit their hosts with healthy mucous-associated immunity along with a sustainable immunologic homeostasis. For example, it points out the modulatory effects of vitamin D on both innate and adaptive immunity, with a specific focus on its ability to suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines synthesis while enhancing regulatory T-cell function. In the same context, also zinc is described as important nutrient for thymic function and T-cell differentiation but exhibits immunomodulatory functions by decreasing inflammation. In addition, the review will go over how micro nutrient deficiencies increase systemic chronic low-grade inflammation and, inflammaging as well as actually enhance autoimmune pathologies in old age. It assesses the potential role of additional targeted nutritional supplementation with micro nutrients to counteract these effects, promoting wider immune resilience in older adults. This review collates the current evidence and highlights the role of adequate micro nutrient intake on inflammation and autoimmunity during ageing, providing plausible origins for nutritional interventions to promote healthy immune aging.

Abstract
Background Early childhood is a critical period for cognitive development, heavily influenced by nutrition. Despite significant economic advancements, malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies persist in many low- and middle-income countries, including China, where dietary diversity remains suboptimal. Existing research predominantly relies on correlational data, underscoring the need for more rigorous empirical evidence. This study aims to fill that gap by providing stronger empirical evidence on the relationship between dietary diversity and developmental outcomes in rural Chinese children. Methods We conducted a longitudinal cohort study of 1,207 children aged 6-23 months, drawn from 100 villages across 22 counties in rural China, with three follow-up rounds extending until the children reached 51-83 months of age. Cognitive and non-cognitive development, as well as key health indicators, were evaluated. Cognitive development was measured using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development and the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence Fourth Edition. Non-cognitive development was assessed via the Ages and Stages Questionnaire: Social-Emotional and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Health indicators included anemia, frequency of illness in the past 2 weeks, and four key anthropometric measures (height-for-age z-scores, weight-for-age z-scores, weight-for-height z-scores, and body mass index-for-age z-scores). Multiple linear regression models were applied to analyze the relationship between dietary diversity scores (DDS) and developmental outcomes, incorporating child fixed effects and adjustments for time-variant confounders. We accounted for the hierarchical structure of the data by clustering standard errors at the village level, which also reflects the township level. Results The regression analysis identified significant positive associations between DDS and cognitive (p < 0.01), as well as reduced illness incidence (p < 0.001) in children aged 6-54 months. Additionally, DDS demonstrated a strong positive effect on non-cognitive development (p < 0.001) in children 2 years and older. The associations between DDS, non-cognitive development (p < 0.01), and illnesses reduction (p < 0.001) remained robust under two-way fixed effects models. Implications To promote sustainable improvements in child development and health, policymakers should prioritize nutrition-focused interventions in rural areas. Community-based programs offering caregivers training and nutritional support, integrated within healthcare and social services infrastructures, are vital for ensuring families have the necessary resources enhance child wellbeing and long-term developmental outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metal ions perform important functions in the body and their concentrations in cells and tissues are tightly controlled. Alterations in metal homeostasis can occur in certain disease states including infection. In this study urinary excretion of several metals including calcium, cadmium, cobalt, copper, iron, magnesium, nickel, selenium, and zinc in Covid-19 patients (n=35) and control (n=60) individuals, spanning ages and sexes. METHODS Urinary samples were analysed using ICP-MS and the differences in metal concentrations between the Covid-19-infected and control groups were assessed using multivariate data analysis and univariate data analysis employing Student's t-test and Pearson's correlation, with significance set at p<0.05. RESULTS The urinary concentrations of all metals analysed were significantly higher in the Covid-infected group (compared to controls), with the exception of copper, which was markedly reduced. The increase in calcium excretion was lower and magnesium excretion greater in Covid-19-positive individuals aged 41 or over compared to those aged 40 or lower. Whilst the increase in iron excretion was lower, and cobalt excretion greater in Covid-19-positive males compared to females. CONCLUSIONS The study highlights significant alterations in the handling of a range of metals in the body during Covid-19 infection. It also highlights both age and sex-specific differences in metal homeostasis. The results suggest an important role for copper in the body during Covid-19 infection and suggests that urinary concentrations of copper and other metals may serve as markers to predict progression of the disease.

Abstract
As of the 7th of July 2024, 775,754,322 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 7,053,902 deaths worldwide, had been reported to the WHO (World Health Organization). Nevertheless, untill the 15th of July 2024, a total of 13,578,710,228 vaccine doses had been administered, with almost no country spared from COVID-19 attacks. The pathophysiology of this virus is complicated, and several symptoms require a deep understanding of the actual mechanisms. It is unclear why some patients develop severe symptoms while others do not, although literature suggests a role for vitamin D. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in the infection or in ameliorating the severity of symptoms. The mechanism of action of vitamin D and vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is well understood. VDD is associated with increased hospitalization of severely ill patients and increased levels of COVID-19-caused mortality. Recent studies suggest that vitamin D levels and genetic variations in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene significantly impact the severity and outcomes of COVID-19, especially in the infections caused by Delta and Omicron variants. Furthermore, VDD causes immune system dysregulation upon infection with SARS-CoV-2, indicating that vitamin D sufficiency is crucial in fighting against COVID-19 infection. The therapeutic effect of vitamin D raises interest in its potential role as a prophylactic and treatment adjunct. We evaluate the immunomodulatory effects of vitamin D and its ability to enhance the efficacy of new antiviral drugs like molnupiravir and paxlovid against SARS-CoV-2. This review discusses the role of vitamin D sufficiency and VDD in COVID-19 initiation and progression, emphasizing the molecular mechanisms by which vitamin D exerts its actions as a proactive step for the next pandemic. However, there is still no clear evidence of vitamin D's impact on prevention and treatment, leading to contradictory findings. Therefore, large-scale randomized trials are required to reach a definitive conclusion. A bibliometric analysis of publications related to vitamin D, immunity, and COVID-19 revealed a significant increase in research activity in this area, particularly in 2020-2024, underscoring the growing recognition of vitamin D's potential role in the context of the pandemic.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect various organs and systems. Symptoms of SLE can vary widely from person to person and over time, including fatigue, joint pain, skin rashes, fever, and inflammation of multiple organs. The association between SLE and excess body weight has been the subject of study, with evidence suggesting that overweight and obesity can worsen the disease´s clinical presentation. Obesity is linked to a state of low-grade chronic inflammation, which can exacerbate the inflammation present in SLE. Additionally, obesity may negatively impact treatment response, disease progression, and patient prognosis. Patients with SLE and obesity may face additional challenges in managing the disease, such as increased symptom severity, higher risk of cardiovascular and renal complications, and a reduced response to conventional treatments. Obesity can also influence the quality of life of patients with SLE, making a holistic approach that considers the individual's nutritional status essential. Therefore, understanding the relationship between obesity and SLE is crucial for optimizing treatment, improving clinical outcomes, and enhancing patients' quality of life. Abstract
BACKGROUND The fast spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic and its high mortality were quickly considered by the health community. Dietary patterns play an important role in strengthening or weakening the immune system and thus incidence of diseases. AIM The present study can provide a comprehensive picture of the association between adherence to unhealthy plant-based diet (uPDI) and COVID-19 incidence. METHODS This study was undertaken on 8157 adults' participants of the Yazd Health Study (YaHS) and Taghzieh Mardom-e-Yazd (TAMIZ) study aged 20 to 70 years. Data on dietary intakes were obtained using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association between uPDI and COVID-19. RESULTS We found a significant association between uPDI and the risk of COVID-19 (OR: 1.36; 95% CI: 1.05-1.75) in the crude model. After adjusting potential confounders, a significant increasing trend in the odds of COVID-19 across increasing quintiles of uPDI (OR: 1.58;95% CI: 1.05-2.37; P-value: 0.027) was observed. Stratified analysis based on sex indicated that uPDI significantly increased the risk of COVID-19 only in males (OR: 1.73;95% CI: 1.12-2.67; P-value: 0.012) and had no effect on females. CONCLUSIONS Participants in the highest quintiles of the uPDI had 58% higher odds of COVID-19 compared to subjects in the lowest quintile of uPDI. Although our study has promising results, stronger clinical studies are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection has garnered significant attention due to its high prevalence and association with various cancers and other health conditions. Composite lifestyle factors may influence the risk of HPV infection, yet their cumulative impact remains insufficiently explored. This study aims to explore the association between the Life's Essential 8 (LE8) Score and HPV infection status, highlighting the potential role of lifestyle and health behaviors in HPV infection prevention. METHODS Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2005-2016, we analyzed the health and nutritional statuses of 6,773 participants after excluding those with missing HPV infection status, inability to calculate the LE8 Score, and missing covariate data. The LE8 Score was computed based on eight cardiovascular health metrics, encompassing both health factors (BMI, non-HDL cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood glucose) and health behaviors (physical activity, diet, sleep duration, and nicotine exposure). HPV infection status was determined through vaginal swab specimens analyzed using various Roche assays. Multivariate logistic regression, the restricted cubic splines (RCS) analysis and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression were employed to assess the association between LE8 Score and HPV infection risk. RESULTS Our findings indicate a significant inverse association between the LE8 Score and HPV infection risk. Participants with medium and high LE8 Scores exhibited a 21% and 31% lower risk of HPV infection, respectively, compared to those with low LE8 Scores in multivariate logistic regression models. The analysis also revealed that lifestyle factors, particularly nicotine exposure and blood pressure, significantly contributed to the observed association. CONCLUSION The study underscores the importance of healthy lifestyle behaviors in reducing the risk of HPV infection. Public health strategies promoting such behaviors could complement existing HPV prevention measures, potentially lowering the burden of HPV-related diseases. Future research should further investigate the mechanisms underlying this association and the effectiveness of lifestyle interventions in diverse populations.

Abstract
Immune nutrition, as an integral component of nutritional support therapy, has garnered significant attention and research in the treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies. Recent advancements in nutritional formulas containing components such as glutamine, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and arginine have led to the development of what is now termed immune nutrition or pharmacological nutrition. These formulations go beyond traditional nutritional support, functioning more like nutritional supplements with pharmacological effects. Patients with gastrointestinal malignancies often experience malnutrition and metabolic disturbances, resulting in immune dysfunction, cytokine dysregulation, and endocrine abnormalities. These issues can compromise intestinal mucosal barrier function, affecting the efficacy and prognosis of anticancer therapies. Recent studies indicate that immune nutrition can modulate specific mechanisms involved in various immune and inflammatory pathways, thereby improving patients' immune status and treatment outcomes. While optimal patient selection, dosing, and timing of immune nutrition are still under investigation, its potential applications in oncology are promising. This article aims to analyze the existing evidence regarding the therapeutic benefits of immune nutrition in gastrointestinal malignancies, offering insights into its clinical standardization and application.

Abstract
Physical and social disruptions resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting young adults in higher education. The purpose of this survey research is to unveil COVID-19 related beliefs using the Health Belief Model, and COVID-19 prevention behaviors, including self-reported fruit and vegetable consumption among university students. A cross-sectional survey was administered to 304 male and female undergraduate students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and majors at a New Jersey state university using convenience sampling. Variables measured included frequency of COVID-19 prevention behaviors (e.g.: wearing indoor mask, handwashing), and consumption of fruit and vegetables (dark green and orange vegetables) over the previous week. Health Belief Model constructs were assessed namely perceived susceptibility to COVID-19, severity, benefits, barriers, and self-efficacy. Statistical distributions were computed for the entire sample and t-tests were investigated for subgroups of age and sex. The sample mean age was 21.7 (SD = 4.7) years with 222 females (73%) and 82 males (27%), and 46% identified as White, non-Hispanics. Participants consumed a mean of 0.95 cups of fruit, 0.81 cups of green vegetables, and 0.46 cups of orange vegetables. Female students practiced more COVID-19 prevention behaviors with a mean difference of 0.26 (p<0.001), perceived greater severity from the virus (Δ = 0.37, p = 0.002) and had stronger perceptions of benefits (Δ = 0.18, p = 0.041), barriers (Δ = 0.21, p = 0.046), and self-efficacy (Δ = 0.20, p = 0.020) than their male counterparts. Older students (aged 23 and above) adopted more COVID-19 prevention behaviors (Δ = -0.35, p = 0.001) and perceived less barriers (Δ = 0.24, p = 0.047) than their younger peers. Nutrition educators and health professionals need to emphasize the importance of adopting preventive health behaviors among university students as strategies to mitigate the severity of COVID-19. Addressing barriers younger male and female students may elevate their motivation and self-efficacy to enact health behaviors.

Abstract
Ovarian cancer is the most fatal of all the reproductive cancers within the female population, mainly due to its late diagnosis that limits surgery and medical treatment. Classically, ovarian cancer therapy has included conventional chemotherapy, and other therapeutic approaches are now being used to treat these patients, but the outcomes of the disease are still poor. Therefore, new strategies are needed to improve life expectancy and life quality of ovarian cancer patients. Considering that, we investigated the effect of the nutritional supplement Ocoxin Oral Solution (OOS) in ovarian cancer models. OOS contains several nutritional supplements, some of them with demonstrated antitumoral action. In vitro studies showed that OOS inhibited the proliferation of several ovarian cancer cell lines, especially of those representative of the endometrioid subtype, in a time- and dose-dependent manner. A fast cell death induction after OOS treatment was observed, and when the molecular mechanisms leading to this effect were investigated, an activation of the DNA damage checkpoint was detected, as shown by activation (phosphorylation) of CHK1 and CHK2 kinases that was followed by the phosphorylation of the target protein histone H2AX. When tested in animal models of ovarian cancer, OOS reduced tumor growth without any observed secondary effects. Moreover, such reduction in tumor proliferation was caused by the induction of DNA damage as corroborated by the in vivo phosphorylation of CHK2 and Histone H2AX. Finally, OOS potentiated the action of carboplatin or olaparib, the standard of care treatments used in ovarian clinics, opening the possibility of including OOS in combination with those standard of care agents in patients with ovarian cancer.

Abstract
Extreme inflammation that continues even after infections can lead to a cytokine storm. In recent times, one of the most common causes of cytokine storm activation has been SARS-CoV-2 infection. A cytokine storm leads to dysregulation and excessive stimulation of the immune system, producing symptoms typical of post-COVID syndrome, including chronic fatigue, shortness of breath, joint pain, trouble concentrating (known as "brain fog"), and even direct organ damage in the heart, lungs, kidneys, and brain. This work summarizes the current knowledge regarding inflammation and the cytokine storm related to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Additionally, changes in lipid metabolism and microbiota composition under the influence of inflammation in COVID-19, along with the possible underlying mechanisms, are described. Finally, this text explores potential health implications related to changes in eating behaviors and nutritional status in COVID-19 patients. Although research on the cytokine storm is still ongoing, there is convincing evidence suggesting that severe immune and inflammatory responses during the acute phase of COVID-19 may lead to long-term health consequences. Understanding these links is key to developing treatment strategies and supporting patients after infection.

BACKGROUND Disease susceptibility and progression of Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary disease (MAC-PD) is associated with multiple factors, including low body mass index (BMI). However, the specific impact of low BMI on MAC-PD progression remains poorly understood. This study aims to examine the progression of MAC-PD in the context of low BMI, utilising a disease-resistant mouse model. METHODS We employed a MAC infection-resistant female A/J mouse model to compare the progression of MAC-PD under two dietary conditions: one group was fed a standard protein diet, representing protein-energy unrestricted conditions, and the other was fed a low protein diet (LPD), representing protein-energy restriction. FINDINGS Our results reveal that protein-energy restriction significantly exacerbates MAC-PD progression by disrupting lipid metabolism. Mice fed an LPD showed elevated fatty acid levels and related gene expressions in lung tissues, similar to findings of increased fatty acids in the serum of patients who exhibited the MAC-PD progression. These mice also exhibited increased CD36 expression and lipid accumulation in macrophages upon MAC infection. In vitro experiments emphasised the crucial role of CD36-mediated palmitic acid uptake in bacterial proliferation. Importantly, in vivo studies demonstrated that administering anti-CD36 antibody to LPD-fed A/J mice reduced macrophage lipid accumulation and impeded bacterial growth, resulting in remarkable slowing disease progression. INTERPRETATION Our findings indicate that the metabolic status of host immune cells critically influences MAC-PD progression. This study highlights the potential of adequate nutrient intake in preventing MAC-PD progression, suggesting that targeting CD36-mediated pathways might be a host-directed therapeutic strategy to managing MAC infection. Abstract
The physiological and molecular responses of leukocytes are altered by organophosphate pesticides. Some reports have shown that diazinon causes immunotoxic effects; diazoxon, the oxon metabolite of diazinon, is attributed to influence the immune response by affecting the leukocyte cholinergic system. In this study, the in vitro effects of diazoxon on molecules involved in cell signaling (cAMP, IP3, DAG, JAK1, and STAT3), which play a crucial role in the activation, differentiation, and survival of leukocytes, were evaluated. Data indicate that diazoxon leads to a decrease in cAMP concentration and an increase in basal IP3 levels. However, diazoxon does not affect basal levels of JAK1 and STAT3 phosphorylation. Instead, diazoxon inhibits leukocyte responsiveness to phorbol myristate acetate and ionomycin, substances that, under normal conditions, enhance JAK/STAT signaling. These findings demonstrate that diazoxon significantly affects key molecular parameters related to cell signaling.

Abstract
BACKGROUND COVID-19 is a pandemic caused by nCoV-2019, a new beta-coronavirus from Wuhan, China, that mainly affects the respiratory system and can be modulated by nutrition. METHODS This review aims to summarize the current literature on the association between dietary intake and serum levels of micronutrients, malnutrition, and dietary patterns and respiratory infections, including flu, pneumonia, and acute respiratory syndrome, with a focus on COVID-19. We searched for relevant articles in various databases and selected those that met our inclusion criteria. RESULTS Some studies suggest that dietary patterns, malnutrition, and certain nutrients such as vitamins D, E, A, iron, zinc, selenium, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber may have a significant role in preventing respiratory diseases, alleviating symptoms, and lowering mortality rates. However, the evidence is not consistent and conclusive, and more research is needed to clarify the mechanisms and the optimal doses of these dietary components. The impact of omega-3 and fiber on respiratory diseases has been mainly studied in children and adults, respectively, and few studies have examined the effect of dietary components on COVID-19 prevention, with a greater focus on vitamin D. CONCLUSION This review highlights the potential of nutrition as a modifiable factor in the prevention and management of respiratory infections and suggests some directions for future research. However, it also acknowledges the limitations of the existing literature, such as the heterogeneity of the study designs, populations, interventions, and outcomes, and the difficulty of isolating the effects of single nutrients from the complex interactions of the whole diet.

Abstract
Royal jelly (RJ) is a highly nutritious natural product with great potential for use in medicine, cosmetics, and as a health-promoting food. This bee product is a mixture of important compounds, such as proteins, vitamins, lipids, minerals, hormones, neurotransmitters, flavonoids, and polyphenols, that underlie the remarkable biological and therapeutic activities of RJ. Various bioactive molecules like 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA), antibacterial protein, apisin, the major royal jelly proteins, and specific peptides such as apisimin, royalisin, royalactin, apidaecin, defensin-1, and jelleins are characteristic ingredients of RJ. RJ shows numerous physiological and pharmacological properties, including vasodilatory, hypotensive, antihypercholesterolaemic, antidiabetic, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-aging, neuroprotective, antimicrobial, estrogenic, anti-allergic, anti-osteoporotic, and anti-tumor effects. Moreover, RJ may reduce menopause symptoms and improve the health of the reproductive system, liver, and kidneys, and promote wound healing. This article provides an overview of the molecular mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of RJ in various diseases, aging, and aging-related complications, with special emphasis on the bioactive components of RJ and their health-promoting properties. The data presented should be an incentive for future clinical studies that hopefully will advance our knowledge about the therapeutic potential of RJ and facilitate the development of novel RJ-based therapeutic opportunities for improving human health and well-being.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Proper nutrition can play an important role in preventing and improving disease progression in patients with COVID-19. The Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) is one of the most common measures used to assess overall nutritional quality. This research aimed to identify the relationship between the HEI-2015 score and disease severity in hospitalised military patients with COVID-19. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted in 295 hospitalised military patients (retired military and military reserve) with COVID-19. A validated food frequency questionnaire was used to assess food intake. To evaluate the quality of the diet, the HEI-2015 score was calculated. A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to measure the association between HEI-2015 scores and disease severity (intensive care unit (ICU) admission and length of hospital stay greater than 4 days) in hospitalised military patients with COVID-19. RESULTS The mean HEI-2015 score was significantly higher in non-ICU patients than in ICU patients (58.39±15.02 vs 53.54±15.65, p=0.01). After adjusting for possible confounding factors including age, sex, comorbidities, calorie intake, body mass index and physical activity, adherence to HEI-2015 inversely related to ICU admission (OR 0.98; 95% CI 0.95 to 1.00) and length of hospital stay of more than 4 days (OR 0.99; 95% CI 0.97 to 1.00) in hospitalised military patients with COVID-19, although statistically not significant. CONCLUSIONS According to the results of the study, adherence to HEI-2015 inversely related to both ICU admission and length of hospital stay in hospitalised military patients with COVID-19, although it was not statistically significant.

Abstract
Deep seawater (DS), obtained from a depth over 200 m, has health benefits due to its rich nutrients and minerals, and intake of DS has shown diverse immunomodulatory effects in allergies and cancer. Therefore, the immunostimulatory effects of Korean mineral-rich seawaters were examined in a cyclophosphamide (CPA)-induced immunosuppression model. Three samples of Korean seawater, namely DS from the East Sea off the coasts of Pohang (PDS) and Uljin (UDS), and seawater from the West Sea off the coast of Boryeong (BS), were collected. The seawaters were abundant in several minerals (calcium, iron, zinc, selenium, etc.). Mice were orally administered the seawaters for 42 days, followed by CPA-induced immunosuppression. The CPA induction reduced the weight of the spleen and lymph nodes; however, the administration of seawaters increased the weight of the lymphoid organs, accompanied by stimulation of natural killer cells' activity and NF-kB-mediated cytokine production (IFNγ, TNFα, IL1β, IL6, and IL12). The mouse-derived splenocytes showed lymphoproliferation without cytotoxicity in the seawater groups. Histopathological analysis revealed that the seawaters improved the CPA-induced atrophic changes by promoting lymphoproliferation in the spleen and lymph nodes. These results provide useful information for the use of Korean mineral-rich seawaters, particularly PDS and UDS, as alternative immunostimulants under immunosuppressive conditions.

Abstract
Sickle Cell Anemia (SCA) is a hereditary hemoglobinopathy characterized by chronic hemolytic anemia, vaso-occlusive events, and a wide range of clinical complications. Malnutrition, often an underexplored aspect of this complex condition, plays a critical role in disease management and overall patient well-being. This publication provides a comprehensive review of the prevalence, impact, and interventions related to malnutrition in individuals with SCA. A thorough literature review reveals the multifaceted challenges faced by SCA patients in maintaining adequate nutrition. The pathophysiology of SCA, involving chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and hypermetabolism, contributes to increased nutritional requirements and altered dietary patterns. Factors such as reduced appetite, nutrient malabsorption, dietary restrictions, and socioeconomic disparities further exacerbate the risk of malnutrition. Malnutrition is a prevalent issue among individuals with SCA, affecting patients of different age groups and disease severities. Nutritional deficiencies, including vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients, are common in this population. The impact of malnutrition on disease outcomes is significant, with associations between nutrient status and complications such as pain crises, infections, and impaired quality of life. This paper also reviews nutritional interventions aimed at addressing malnutrition in SCA patients. While dietary counseling, supplementation, and personalized nutrition plans have shown promise in improving nutritional status, challenges such as patient adherence and access to healthcare must be addressed to optimize their effectiveness.

Abstract
PURPOSE Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) have always been suggested as one of the main causes of gastroenteritis in children. However, no comprehensive report on the global epidemiology of these viruses in pediatric gastroenteritis is available. METHODS A systematic search was conducted to obtain published papers from 2003 to 2023 in three main databases PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. RESULTS The estimated global pooled prevalence of HAdV infection in children with gastroenteritis was 10% (95% CI: 9-11%), with a growing trend after 2010. The highest prevalence was observed in Africa (20%, 95% CI: 14-26%). The prevalence was higher in inpatients (11%; 95% CI: 8-13%) and patients aged 5 years old and younger (9%; 95% CI: 7-10%). However, no significant difference was observed between male and female patients (P = 0.63). The most prevalent species was found to be the species F (57%; 95% CI: 41-72%). The most common HAdVs observed in children with gastroenteritis were types 40/41, 38, and 2. Analysis of case-control studies showed an association between HAdV and gastroenteritis in children (OR: 2.28, 95% CI; 1.51-3.44). CONCLUSION This study provided valuable insights into the importance of HAdVs in children with gastroenteritis, especially in hospitalized and younger children. The results can be used in future preventive measurements and the development of effective vaccines.

Abstract
There is evidence that healthy diets improve the immune system and lessen the severity of infectious diseases such as COVID-19. We have investigated whether the dietary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and dietary approach to stop hypertension (DASH) score could be associated with the occurrence and clinical outcomes of COVID-19. This case-control study included 120 adults who were admitted to the hospital. Dietary TAC and DASH diet scores were determined by a 138-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Inflammation-related markers including C-reactive protein (CRP) and transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS-2) differential were measured. Also, using chest radiology criteria, the severity of the disease was evaluated. The mean CRP values in the lowest and highest tertiles of either dietary TAC or DASH diet scores were 9.44 ± 11.26 and 3.52 ± 4.83 mg/dL (p = .003) or 9.04 ± 11.23 and 4.40 ± 6.23 mg/dL (p = .013), respectively. Individuals with higher dietary TAC were at a lower risk of COVID-19 (OR: 0.06, p < ·0001). Individuals with greater DASH diet scores were also at decreased odds of COVID-19 (OR: 0.12, p < ·0001). No significant associations were found between dietary TAC and DASH diet scores with severity of COVID-19 disease, CRP, or TMPRSS-2 (p > 0.05). The study found that adherence to a diet with higher dietary TAC and DASH diet scores may be protective against COVID-19 and improve outcomes of the disease. More research is needed to corroborate these findings.

Abstract
The systematic review investigates the impact of different nutrients and dietary patterns on metabolism and immunity to answer the research question: "Can personalized nutritional approaches boost immunity?" The importance of diet in supporting the immune system has come to light in today's environment, where a strong immune system is crucial for protection against infectious illnesses, as highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This systematic review adhered to the guidelines outlined in the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020. Four databases were screened for relevant data published in 2022-2023: PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were utilized, and 13 papers were finalized after screening and employing the quality appraisal tool Cochrane Bias assessment for randomized controlled trials (RCT). Personalized nutrition can strengthen immunity and enhance overall health by adjusting dietary recommendations and following a person's genetic makeup, lifestyle, and health state. An adequate supply of vitamins, minerals, proteins, and fatty acids as well as an optimum caloric intake are essential for immune health, and individual requirements can vary significantly due to genetic factors, lifestyle choices, and underlying health conditions. Personalized nutrition considers these factors, enabling tailored dietary recommendations to address specific nutrient needs and optimize nutrient intake, leading to better health outcomes. The review concludes that personalized nutrition is more effective than a one-size-fits-all approach in boosting immunity, and its potential impact on health and immune function is highly important.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2, the etiological agent of COVID-19, is devoid of any metabolic capacity; therefore, it is critical for the viral pathogen to hijack host cellular metabolic machinery for its replication and propagation. This single-stranded RNA virus with a 29.9 kb genome encodes 14 open reading frames (ORFs) and initiates a plethora of virus-host protein-protein interactions in the human body. These extensive viral protein interactions with host-specific cellular targets could trigger severe human metabolic reprogramming/dysregulation (HMRD), a rewiring of sugar-, amino acid-, lipid-, and nucleotide-metabolism(s), as well as altered or impaired bioenergetics, immune dysfunction, and redox imbalance in the body. In the infectious process, the viral pathogen hijacks two major human receptors, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-2 and/or neuropilin (NRP)-1, for initial adhesion to cell surface; then utilizes two major host proteases, TMPRSS2 and/or furin, to gain cellular entry; and finally employs an endosomal enzyme, cathepsin L (CTSL) for fusogenic release of its viral genome. The virus-induced HMRD results in 5 possible infectious outcomes: asymptomatic, mild, moderate, severe to fatal episodes; while the symptomatic acute COVID-19 condition could manifest into 3 clinical phases: (i) hypoxia and hypoxemia (Warburg effect), (ii) hyperferritinemia ('cytokine storm'), and (iii) thrombocytosis (coagulopathy). The mean incubation period for COVID-19 onset was estimated to be 5.1 days, and most cases develop symptoms after 14 days. The mean viral clearance times were 24, 30, and 39 days for acute, severe, and ICU-admitted COVID-19 patients, respectively. However, about 25-70% of virus-free COVID-19 survivors continue to sustain virus-induced HMRD and exhibit a wide range of symptoms that are persistent, exacerbated, or new 'onset' clinical incidents, collectively termed as post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) or long COVID. PASC patients experience several debilitating clinical condition(s) with >200 different and overlapping symptoms that may last for weeks to months. Chronic PASC is a cumulative outcome of at least 10 different HMRD-related pathophysiological mechanisms involving both virus-derived virulence factors and a multitude of innate host responses. Based on HMRD and virus-free clinical impairments of different human organs/systems, PASC patients can be categorized into 4 different clusters or sub-phenotypes: sub-phenotype-1 (33.8%) with cardiac and renal manifestations; sub-phenotype-2 (32.8%) with respiratory, sleep and anxiety disorders; sub-phenotype-3 (23.4%) with skeleto-muscular and nervous disorders; and sub-phenotype-4 (10.1%) with digestive and pulmonary dysfunctions. This narrative review elucidates the effects of viral hijack on host cellular machinery during SARS-CoV-2 infection, ensuing detrimental effect(s) of virus-induced HMRD on human metabolism, consequential symptomatic clinical implications, and damage to multiple organ systems; as well as chronic pathophysiological sequelae in virus-free PASC patients. We have also provided a few evidence-based, human randomized controlled trial (RCT)-tested, precision nutrients to reset HMRD for health recovery of PASC patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to determine the association between dietary mineral intake and Coronavirus-disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and its associated hospitalization. METHODS This cohort study utilized the MASHAD study population, which comprised individuals aged 35-65. Upon recruitment in 2007, dietary intake was documented using a validated 65-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Data on COVID-19 PCR test results was collected from all relevant medical centers in Mashhad between February 2020 and June 2022. The regression model included dietary minerals and employed the backward variable selection method, along with advanced data analysis techniques. RESULTS The final analysis involved 1957 participants, including 193 COVID-19-positive patients. The mean age was 49.71 and 50.28 years in the COVID-19-positive and negative groups, respectively (p = 0.12). Dietary intakes of magnesium, iron, and potassium were notably lower in COVID-19-positive patients (P < 0.05). Following adjustments for age and sex, dietary iron remained significantly associated with COVID-19 incidence (OR = 0.94, 95% CI: 0.90-0.98). Furthermore, a statistically significant relationship was observed between dietary zinc and hospitalization due to COVID-19 (OR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.51-0.93). In dynamical system models, intakes of calcium, zinc, and iron below the cut-offs of 1138, 9.7, and 8.17 mg/day, respectively, were linked to an increased risk of COVID-19 incidence. CONCLUSION Higher dietary iron and zinc intake are associated with decreased risk of COVID-19 infection and hospitalization, respectively.

Abstract
Background In the few reports to date, the changes in superoxide dismutase (SOD), a key factor in cellular protection against superoxide, in COVID-19 have been very inconsistent and contradictory. There is also a lack of data on COVID-19 induced by Omicron variant. Further investigation is warranted to figure out SOD alterations in COVID-19, particularly within the context of ongoing Omicron variant infection, which may provide clues to its role within COVID-19 pathogenesis and open up new avenues for COVID-19 treatment. Methods SOD activity in 109 COVID-19 patients (including 46 severe cases and 63 mild to moderate cases) and 30 matched healthy controls were quantified. Demographic data, blood cell counts, biochemical indicators, coagulation indicators, and inflammatory markers were also recorded. Results SOD, an important key node, experienced a significant decrease in COVID-19, with the severe patients exhibiting lower activity compared to the mild to moderate patients and control healthy. Notably, severe patients who deceased had the lowest SOD activity. Correlation analysis revealed significant correlations between SOD and inflammatory markers, organ injury markers, coagulation dysfunction indicators, nutritional markers, and lymphocytes counts. The ROC curve also showed good performance for the differentiation of severe cases and the prediction of death. Conclusion SOD activity was significantly decreased in COVID-19 infected with Omicron variant and significantly correlated with systemic changes, and could be used as a biomarker to assess disease severity and predict mortality in COVID-19 clinical pathway management. Additionally, this finding will contribute to exploring new potential direction for the treatment of severe COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
A fluorescent dual-emitting platform for fluorescent "turn-on" ratiometric detection of ascorbic acid in beverages was developed utilizing luminol-embedded iron-based metal-organic frameworks (luminol@Fe-DOBDC MOFs). Luminol@Fe-DOBDC MOFs with fluorescent emissions at 430 nm and 540 nm under excitation wavelength of 365 nm were applied to detect ascorbic acid on the basis of ascorbic acid triggering the reduction of Fe3+ into Fe2+. In the presence of ascorbic acid, fluorescent intensity at 540 nm was increased significantly while fluorescent intensity at 430 nm was changed slightly. Two emission peaks separated by 110 nm can eliminate environmental interferences by built-in self-calibration of ratiometric signal, enhancing the sensitivity and accuracy. The increasing ratiometric fluorescent intensity (I540 nm/I430 nm) has linear relationship with the concentration of ascorbic acid from 0.2 to 30 μM with limit of detection of 70 nM. It is an efficient, sensitive and accurate platform to detect ascorbic acid in commercial beverages using transition-metal-based MOFs.

Abstract
A sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic was a big blow to the world community on every level. Created by a novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, which was previously unknown to the human immune system. The expert opinion almost immediately united on the fact that the most effective way of fighting the pandemic would be by building immunity artificially via a mass immunization program. However, it took about a year for the approval of the first vaccine against COVID-19. In the meantime, a big part of the general population started adapting nutritious diet plans and dietary supplements to boost natural immunity as a potential prophylactic strategy against SARS-CoV-2 infection. Whether they originate from mainstream medicine, such as synthetic supplements, or traditional herbal remedies in the form of single or poly-herbs, these supplements may comprise various components that exhibit immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial characteristics. There is a substantial body of predictions and expert opinions suggesting that enhancing one's diet with dietary supplements containing additional nutrients and bioactive compounds like vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, phytochemicals, and probiotics can enhance the immune system's ability to develop resistance against COVID-19, although none of them have any conclusive evidence nor officially recommended by World Health Organization (WHO). The current review critically acclaims the gap between public perception-based preference and real evidence-based study to weigh the actual benefit of dietary supplements in relation to COVID-19 prevention and management.

Abstract
Micronutrient deficiencies can develop in critically ill patients, arising from factors such as decreased intake, increased losses, drug interactions, and hypermetabolism. These deficiencies may compromise important immune functions, with potential implications for patient outcomes. Alternatively, micronutrient blood levels may become low due to inflammation-driven redistribution rather than consumption. This explorative pilot study investigates blood micronutrient concentrations during the first three weeks of ICU stay in critically ill COVID-19 patients and evaluates the impact of additional micronutrient administration. Moreover, associations between inflammation, disease severity, and micronutrient status were explored. We measured weekly concentrations of vitamins A, B6, D, and E; iron; zinc; copper; selenium; and CRP as a marker of inflammation state and the SOFA score indicating disease severity in 20 critically ill COVID-19 patients during three weeks of ICU stay. Half of the patients received additional (intravenous) micronutrient administration. Data were analyzed with linear mixed models and Pearson's correlation coefficient. High deficiency rates of vitamins A, B6, and D; zinc; and selenium (50-100%) were found at ICU admission, along with low iron status. After three weeks, vitamins B6 and D deficiencies persisted, and iron status remained low. Plasma levels of vitamins A and E, zinc, and selenium improved. No significant differences in micronutrient levels were found between patient groups. Negative correlations were identified between the CRP level and levels of vitamins A and E, iron, transferrin, zinc, and selenium. SOFA scores negatively correlated with vitamin D and selenium levels. Our findings reveal high micronutrient deficiency rates at ICU admission. Additional micronutrient administration did not enhance levels or expedite their increase. Spontaneous increases in vitamins A and E, zinc, and selenium levels were associated with inflammation resolution, suggesting that observed low levels may be attributed, at least in part, to redistribution rather than true deficiencies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It was well documented that calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and magnesium (Mg) participate in many physiological processes. We aimed to study the changing trend of serum levels of Ca, P, and Mg in frequent respiratory tract infections (FRTI) in children. METHODS A retrospective study was performed in our centre. A total of 213 FRTI cases and 33 controls were enrolled in our study. We analyzed the correlation between serum Ca/P/Mg levels and inflammatory indexes by using Spearman correlation analysis. Standard mean difference (SMD) was applied to test the differences of serum Ca/P/Mg levels between FRTI subgroups and controls. In terms of the findings of SMD between Ca/P/Mg status between FRTI subgroups and controls, receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis was further applied to test the association between serum Ca level and bronchitis, parainfluenza virus infection, influenza B virus infection and cytomegalovirus infection. RESULTS Serum Ca level was significantly associated with white blood cell (WBC), platelet (PLT) and procalcitonin (PCT) (p = 0.006; p < 10-4; p = 0.004). Serum P level was markedly associated with eryhtrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and PCT (p = 0.018; p < 10-4). Controls showed significantly lower serum Ca level than that among bronchitis (p = 0.001), parainfluenza virus infection (p = 0.027), influenza B virus infection (p = 0.017), cytomegalovirus infection (p = 0.029), and two pathogens infected (p = 0.020). ROC curve analysis showed that serum Ca level was significantly associated with bronchitis (p = 0.047) and influenza B virus infection (p = 0.049). CONCLUSIONS Serum levels of Ca and P may reflect the inflammatory status in children with FRTI. Alteration of serum Ca level may predict the risk of bronchitis and influenza B virus infection. Keeping the homeostasis of Ca, P, and Mg may be important for the prevention and treatment of FRTI.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of flavoured nanophytosomes loaded with vitamins A, E, D, B complex, folic acid, and C, as well as zinc on the immunosuppressive cyclosporin A (CsA)-induced liver and kidney injury in male rats. The vitamins flavoured nanophytosomes (VFnPs) were characterized in terms of particle size, zeta potential, encapsulation efficiency. Ice cream was flavoured with star anise volatile oil to mask the VFnPs' flavour and unacceptable taste. The study found that treatment with CsA alone resulted in increased (P > 0.05) levels of creatinine, urea, and MDA, as well as the activities of AST and ALT, while the levels of SOD, CAT, GST, proteins, CD4, INF-ᵧ, IL-6, IL-1β, and TLR4 decreased (P > 0.05). However, the group that received CsA simultaneously with VFnPs showed a significant (P > 0.05) decrease in the levels of creatinine, urea, and MDA, as well as the activities of AST and ALT, and increased (P > 0.05) levels of SOD, CAT, GST, proteins, CD4, INF-ᵧ, IL-6, IL-1β, and TLR4. The increase in the ratio of VFnPs had little effect on the physiochemical and sensory evaluation of the ice cream. Finally, the study suggests that VFnPs could potentially protect against CsA-induced liver and kidney injury and serve as a promising natural therapy for treating such conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism published its first clinical guidelines for use of micronutrients (MNs) in 2022. A two-day web symposium was organized in November 2022 discussing how to apply the guidelines in clinical practice. The present paper reports the main findings of this symposium. METHODS Current evidence was discussed, the first day being devoted to clarifying the biology underlying the guidelines, especially regarding the definition of deficiency, the impact of inflammation, and the roles in antioxidant defences and immunity. The second day focused on clinical situations with high prevalence of MN depletion and deficiency. RESULTS The importance of the determination of MN status in patients at risk and diagnosis of deficiencies is still insufficiently perceived, considering the essential role of MNs in immune and antioxidant defences. Epidemiological data show that deficiencies of several MNs (iron, iodine, vitamin D) are a global problem that affects human health and well-being including immune responses such as to vaccination. Clinical conditions frequently associated with MN deficiencies were discussed including cancer, obesity with impact of bariatric surgery, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, critical illness, and aging. In all these conditions, MN deficiency is associated with worsening of outcomes. The recurrent problem of shortage of MN products, but also lack of individual MN-products is a worldwide problem. CONCLUSION Despite important progress in epidemiology and clinical nutrition, numerous gaps in practice persist. MN depletion and deficiency are frequently insufficiently searched for in clinical conditions, leading to inadequate treatment. The symposium concluded that more research and continued education are required to improve patient outcome.
