Pancreatic cancer is recognized as one of the most lethal types of cancer globally, characterized by a high mortality rate and a bleak prognosis, which greatly contributes to cancer-related deaths. Forecasts suggest that by 2030, pancreatic cancer will exceed other cancer types in prevalence. The disease presents considerable difficulties owing to the lack of prominent symptoms in its early stages, restricted options for early detection, rapid progression, and unfavorable outcomes. Presently, traditional methods for diagnosing pancreatic cancer primarily rely on imaging techniques. However, these methods often entail significant costs, require considerable time, and necessitate specialized skills for both operating the equipment and interpreting the resulting images. To overcome these obstacles, the use of biosensors has been proposed as a potentially valuable tool for the early detection of pancreatic cancer. MicroRNAs (miRs), a type of small non-coding RNA molecules, have emerged as highly sensitive molecular diagnostic tools that have the potential to function as precise indicators for a range of diseases, including cancer. Biosensors have been suggested as a potential solution for tackling these challenges, offering a promising approach for the early detection of pancreatic cancer. Small non-coding RNA molecules known as MicroRNAs (miRs) have become recognized as extremely sensitive molecular diagnostic tools and can act as precise biomarkers for different diseases, such as cancer. Moreover, this manuscript presents a thorough summary of the latest innovations in nano-biosensors that have been specifically developed for the identification of non-coding RNAs related to pancreatic cancer.

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are a group of communicable diseases with a long history with human beings. NTDs are the proxy of poverty since they affect those in low-income and extreme-poverty populations, as those populations lack access to proper health care, clean water, sanitary conditions, and hygiene. NTDs create losses for a nation that come from the health and the economic sectors as well since the costs of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment strain the national purse strings. One of the 20 different forms of NTDs on the list is food-borne trematodes, comprises of Fasciola, Paragonimus, Clonorchis, and Opisthorchis. Currently, it is estimated that food-borne trematodes can cause a devastating effect on mortality and morbidity. All of them are zoonotic, as humans become infected by ingestion of a second intermediate host, such as freshwater snails, fish, or water vegetables. Opisthorchis viverrini, one of the food-borne trematodes that can be found mostly in South East Asia regions, especially in the Mekong basin, is regarded as a group 1 carcinogen leading to cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). This study aims to present the updated review of Opisthorchis viverrini and CCA.

The objective of this study was to develop a diagnostic blood test for bipolar disorder I using membrane potentials as biological markers.

We measured the fluorescence intensity of a dye sensitive to membrane potential in whole blood samples from bipolar I, unipolar, schizophrenic patients, and psychiatrically normal controls. Patients were diagnosed through structured clinical interviews according to DSM-IV. Both the t-test and logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the data.

The membrane potential as indicated by the fluorescence intensity of the membrane potential dye in blood cells drawn from patients with bipolar disorder I was significantly different from the blood cells drawn from unipolar and schizophrenic patients, and from psychiatrically normal controls (P<0.001). The specificity and sensitivity were determined to be 0.88 and 0.78 respectively which compared well with the state of the art diagnostic techniques for other diseases. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the membrane potential was a reliable predictor which could be used as a diagnostic marker for bipolar I.

These results indicate that the membrane potential of blood cells can be used as a diagnostic marker to augment the DSM-IV diagnosis of bipolar disorder I. Expanded clinical trials are needed to establish this technique for general use.

Only 20% of patients who present with pancreatic cancer will be amenable to potentially curative resection. Therefore, it is necessary to reliably identify patients who might benefit from major surgical intervention by employing the appropriate staging methods. In this review, the pros and cons of each imaging technique are discussed and an algorithm for single and combined use of the different imaging modalities is proposed. To date, contrast-enhanced multi-detector row helical CT (MDR-CT) together with endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) remain the first staging methods of choice. MDR-CT has a high sensitivity for identifying vascular invasion and EUS is able to detect lesions as small as 2-3 mm. ERCP is performed mainly in patients with biliary obstruction with the option for therapeutic intervention during the same session. MRI with MR-angiography, MRCP, PET/CT and staging laparoscopy are additional modalities which might give further information in cases of equivocal findings by MDR-CT and EUS. The role of tumour markers such as CA 19-9 and CEA is reserved for monitoring and diagnosing post-surgery recurrence. Cytological or histological confirmation should usually be performed in patients that are not eligible for surgery prior to the commencement of palliative radio- or chemotherapy. In the routine clinical setting, MDR-CT and EUS play the predominant roles by providing the most cost-effective and accurate means for diagnosing and staging most cases of pancreatic cancer.
