A 25-year-old man was admitted with the chief complaints of right flank pain, watery diarrhea, and fever. Blood tests revealed high levels of inflammatory markers, and infectious enteritis was diagnosed. A stool culture obtained on admission revealed no growth of any significant pathogens. Conservative therapy was undertaken with fasting and fluid replacement. On day 2 of admission, the fever resolved, the frequency of defecation reduced, the right flank pain began to subside, and the white blood cell count started to decrease. On hospital day 4, the frequency of diarrhea decreased to approximately 5 times per day, and the right flank pain resolved. However, the patient developed epigastric pain and increased blood levels of the pancreatic enzymes. Abdominal computed tomography revealed mild pancreatic enlargement. Acute pancreatitis was diagnosed, and conservative therapy with fasting and fluid replacement was continued. A day later, the blood levels of the pancreatic enzymes peaked out. On hospital day 7, the patient passed stools with fresh blood, and Campylobacter jejuni/coli was detected by culture. Lower gastrointestinal endoscopy performed on hospital day 8 revealed diffuse aphthae extending from the terminal ileum to the entire colon. Based on the findings, pancreatitis associated with Campylobacter enteritis was diagnosed. In the present case, a possible mechanism of onset of pancreatitis was invasion of the pancreatic duct by Campylobacter and the host immune responses to Campylobacter.

The aim of this study was to determine the survival of Campylobacter jejuni in chicken meat samples at frozen temperatures and given length of incubation and to determine the impact of aerobic bacteria on the survival of C. jejuni. The chicken meat samples were inoculated with C. jejuni NCTC 11351 suspensions and stored in bags at temperatures of -20°C and -70°C. The mean value of C. jejuni from meat samples decreased from 7.52 log10 CFU/g after 30 minutes of incubation at ambient temperature, to 3.87 log10 CFU/g on the eighth week of incubation at -20°C, and to 3.78 log10 CFU/g at incubation at -70°C after the same incubation period. Both freezing temperatures, -20°C and -70°C, decreased the number of campylobacters. The presence of aerobic mesophilic bacteria did not influence the survival of C. jejuni in chicken meet samples. Keeping poultry meat at freezing temperatures is important for the reduction of C. jejuni, which has a strong influence on the prevention of occurrence of campylobacteriosis in humans.

Patients with Campylobacter enterocolitis may come to laparotomy due to the severity of abdominal symptoms and signs, although only two patients with intestinal inflammation have been described and in neither was the histopathology documented. A case of a 52-year-old male who had a typical diarrhoeal illness of Campylobacter enterocolitis diagnosed on stool culture is reported. Despite appropriate treatment he developed signs and symptoms consistent with small intestinal obstruction. Laparotomy revealed peritonitis and thickened distal ileum with transmural inflammatory changes on histopathology. These changes were shown to have completely resolved at a second laparotomy, required for persistent obstruction due to adhesions. Recurrent adhesions culminated in a third laparotomy. The clinical, operative and histopathological findings may be confused with Crohn's disease.
