Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the results of CT- vs MR-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of liver metastases (LM) from colorectal cancer after 10 years of follow-up in an observational, retrospective, and multicentric study. METHODS A total of 238 patients with 496 LM were treated with RFA either with CT (CT group) or magnetic resonance (MR group) guidance. Every ablated LM was assessed and followed up with diagnostic MRI. Technical success, technique efficacy, predictive factors, recurrence rates, and overall survival were assessed. RESULTS The CT group comprised 143 patients and the MR group 77 patients. Eighteen patients underwent ablation with both modalities. Technical success per patient and per lesion was 88% and 93% for CT and 87% and 89.6% for MR, and technique efficacy was 97.1% and 98.6% for CT and 98.7% and 99.3% for MR respectively. Local recurrence following the first ablation (primary patency) occurred in 20.1% (CT) vs 4.6% (MR) (p < 0.001). Residual liver tumor, size of LM, and advanced N and M stage at initial diagnosis were independent predictors for overall survival in both groups. The median overall survival measured from first RFA treatment was 2.6 years. The 1-year, 5-year, and 10-year survival were 85.9%, 25.5%, and 19.1% respectively. CONCLUSIONS The MR group had significantly better local control compared to the CT group. There was no significant difference in patient survival between the two groups. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT MR-guided radiofrequency ablation of colorectal liver metastases is safe and effective, and offers better local control than CT-guided ablation. KEY POINTS • Imaging modality for radiofrequency ablation guidance is an independent predictor of local recurrence in colorectal liver metastases. • MR-guided radiofrequency ablation achieved better local control of liver metastases from colorectal cancer than CT-guided. • The number and size of liver metastases are, among others, independent predictors of survival. Radiofrequency ablation with MR guidance improved clinical outcome but does not affect survival.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The safety and efficacy of a microwave ablation (MWA) system for the liver with novel technologies in field control, antenna cooling through the inner part of the choke ring, and dual temperature monitoring were evaluated in this multicenter retrospective study. MATERIAL AND METHODS Ablation characteristics and efficacy were assessed on follow-up imaging (computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging). Safety was evaluated according to CTCAE classification. RESULTS Eighty-seven liver tumors (65 metastases and 22 hepatocellular carcinomas) measuring 17.8 ± 7.9 mm were treated in 68 patients. Ablation zones measured 35.6 ± 11 mm in longest diameter. The coefficients of variation of the longest and shortest ablation diameters were 30.1% and 26.4%, respectively. The mean sphericity index of the ablation zone was 0.78 ± 0.14. Seventy-one ablations (82%) had a sphericity index above 0.66. At 1 month, all tumors demonstrated complete ablation with margins of 0-5 mm, 5-10 mm, and greater than 10 mm achieved in 22%, 46%, and 31% of tumors, respectively. After a median follow-up of 10 months, local tumor control was achieved in 84.7% of treated tumors after a single ablation and in 86% after one patient received a second ablation. One grade 3 complication (stress ulcer) occurred, but was unrelated to the procedure. Ablation zone size and geometry in this clinical study were in accordance with previously reported in vivo preclinical findings. CONCLUSION Promising results were reported for this MWA device. The high spherical index, reproducibility, and predictability of the resulting treatment zones translated to a high percentage of adequate safety margins, providing good local control rate.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the safety and efficacy of ultrasound-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liver metastases adjacent to the gallbladder (GB). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 113 patients with 118 liver lesions (63 HCC lesions and 55 liver metastases) adjacent to the gallbladder underwent RFA between March 2011 and June 2019. Gallbladder-related complications and technique effectiveness rates were evaluated based on the classification of liver tumors and the distance between the lesion and the gallbladder. RESULTS Gallbladder-related complications were observed in 13 patients. Among the patients with HCC, there was no significant difference between the ≤0.5 cm and >0.5 cm groups (p = .282). However, among the patients with liver metastases, the incidence of gallbladder-related complications in the ≤0.5 cm group was significantly higher than that in the >0.5 cm group (p = .025). The overall incidence of complications was significantly higher in the ≤0.5 cm group than in the >0.5 cm group (p = .020). Among the patients with lesions ≤3 cm, the technical effectiveness rate in the HCC group was significantly higher than in the liver metastasis group (p = .036). CONCLUSION RFA is a safe and effective treatment option for liver tumors adjacent to the gallbladder. Patients with lesions ≤0.5 cm from the gallbladder had higher gallbladder-related complications, especially patients with liver metastases. Among patients with lesions ≤3 cm, RFA showed greater technical effectiveness for treating HCC than for treating liver metastases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Regrowth after ablation is common, but predictive factors for local control are scarce. This study investigates whether histopathological growth patterns (HGP) can be used as a predictive biomarker for local control after ablation of colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). METHODS Patients who received simultaneous resection and ablation as first treatment for CRLM between 2000 and 2019 were considered eligible. HGPs were determined on resected CRLM according to international guidelines and were classified as desmoplastic or non-desmoplastic. As minimal inter-tumoural heterogeneity has been demonstrated, the HGP of resected and ablated CRLM were presumed to be identical. Local tumour progression (LTP) was assessed on postoperative surveillance imaging. Uni- and multivariable competing risk methods were used to compare LTP. RESULTS In total 221 patients with 443 ablated tumours were analysed. A desmoplastic HGP was found in 60 (27.1%) patients who had a total of 159 (34.7%) ablated lesions. Five-year LTP [95%CI] was significantly higher for ablated CRLM with a presumed non-desmoplastic HGP (37% [30-43] vs 24% [17-32], Gray's-test p = 0.014). On multivariable analysis, a non-desmoplastic HGP (adjusted HR [95%CI]; 1.55 [1.03-2.35]) was independently associated with higher LTP rates after ablation. CONCLUSION HGP is an independent predictor of local tumour progression following ablation of CRLM.

Abstract
Background To analyze long-term oncological outcomes of open and percutaneous thermal ablation in the treatment of patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). Methods This assessment from a prospective, longitudinal tumor registry included 329 patients who underwent 541 procedures for 1350 CRLM from January 2010 to February 2021. Three cohorts were formed: 2010–2013 (129 procedures [53 percutaneous]), 2014–2017 (206 procedures [121 percutaneous]) and 2018–2021 (206 procedures [135 percutaneous]). Local tumor progression-free survival (LTPFS) and overall survival (OS) data were estimated using the Kaplan–Meier method. Potential confounding factors were analyzed with uni- and multivariable Cox regression analyses. Results LTPFS improved significantly over time for percutaneous ablations (2-year LTPFS 37.7% vs. 69.0% vs. 86.3%, respectively, P < .0001), while LTPFS for open ablations remained reasonably stable (2-year LTPFS 87.1% [2010–2013], vs. 92.7% [2014–2017] vs. 90.2% [2018–2021], P = .12). In the latter cohort (2018–2021), the open approach was no longer superior regarding LTPFS (P = .125). No differences between the three cohorts were found regarding OS (P = .088), length of hospital stay (open approach, P = .065; percutaneous approach, P = .054), and rate and severity of complications (P = .404). The rate and severity of complications favored the percutaneous approach in all three cohorts (P = .002). Conclusion Over the last 10 years efficacy of percutaneous ablations has improved remarkably for the treatment of CRLM. Oncological outcomes seem to have reached results following open ablation. Given its minimal invasive character and shorter length of hospital stay, whenever feasible, percutaneous procedures may be favored over an open approach. Abstract
Purpose To compare the feasibility and efficacy of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) combined with chemotherapy and chemotherapy alone in patients with ovarian cancer liver metastasis (OCLM). Methods In this retrospective study, a total of 60 patients diagnosed with OCLM between May 2015 to February 2017 were included. All patients with ovarian cancer received chemotherapy and primary cytoreductive surgery before. Thirty patients underwent RFA and chemotherapy, and thirty patients only took chemotherapy. The overall survival (OS), CA-125 levels, and serum AST and ALT levels were compared between the two groups. Results In the RFA group, the 1-,2-, and 3-year OS rates after RFA were 93.3%, 80.0%, and 53.3%, respectively. Serum AST and ALT levels were both elevated after RFA (p=0.0004, p<0.0001). In the chemotherapy group, the 1-,2-, and 3-year OS rates were 79.5%, 60.1%, and 42.1%, respectively. Levels of serum AST and ALT were stable. CA-125 levels for both groups were also available. Conclusion Based on our analysis of a single institution’s series of patients with OCLM, RFA could be a feasibly effective option in the management of OCLM.

Abstract
Image-guided percutaneous ablation techniques represent an attractive local therapy for the treatment of colorectal liver metastases (CLM) given its low risk of severe complications, which allows for early initiation of adjuvant therapies and spare functional liver parenchyma, allowing repeated treatments at the time of recurrence. However, ablation does not consistently achieve similar oncological outcomes to surgery, with the latter being currently considered the first-line local treatment modality in international guidelines. Recent application of computer-assisted ablation planning, guidance, and intra-procedural response assessment has improved percutaneous ablation outcomes. In addition, the evolving understanding of tumor molecular profiling has brought to light several biological factors associated with oncological outcomes following local therapies. The standardization of ablation procedures, the understanding of previously unknown biological factors affecting ablation outcomes, and the evidence by ongoing prospective clinical trials are poised to change the current perspective and indications on the use of ablation for CLM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) represents a most grave healthy burden worldwide. TESTIN has been confirmed as a predictive biomarker for several cancers. In the present study, we sought to assess the expression level and prognostic values of TESTIN in CRC. METHODS The levels of TESTIN mRNA and protein were detected in 132 paired CRC tissues and noncancerous ones via quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays, respectively. Chi-square test was adopted to analyze the association of TESTIN expression with clinicopathological profiles of CRC patients. To explore prognostic value of TESTIN, Kaplan-Meier curve and Cox regression analyses were employed. RESULTS TESTIN expression was down-regulated among CRC tissues in comparison to bordering cancer-free samples at both protein and mRNA levels (P < 0.001). Decreased TESTIN expression was closely related to poor tumor differentiation (P = 0.001) and advanced TNM stages (P = 0.001). CRC cases with low expression of TESTIN were more likely to undergo dismal overall survivals (log-rank P = 0.003). Multivariate Cox analysis unveiled that down-regulated expression of TESTIN was independently correlated with poor prognosis (HR=2.422, 95% CI=1.294-4.535, P = 0.006). CONCLUSION The down-regulation of TESTIN may predict dismal prognosis for CRC patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Intraoperative radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and the newer technique of microwave ablation (MWA) can both be of additional value in parenchyma preserving surgical treatment of colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). MWA is less influenced by the heat-sink effect of surrounding vessels and can generate more heat in less time but RFA is still widely used. True comparing studies are scarce. METHODS This single centre retrospective cohort study analyzed patients who underwent ultrasound guided intraoperative ablation as a part of the surgical treatment of CRLM between 2013 and 2018. In September 2015, MWA was substituted for RFA. Outcomes included unsuccessful ablation rates at 1-year postoperative, 30-days major complication rates, progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Logistic regression models were used for univariable and multivariable analyses to identify predictors of unsuccessful ablation. RESULTS Forty-one patients underwent RFA of 98 lesions (median 2) and 79 patients underwent MWA of 193 lesions (median 2). The median diameter of the ablated lesions was 9 mm for both RFA and MWA. Unsuccessful ablation was observed in 7 metastases (7.1%) after RFA and 14 metastases (7.3%) after MWA (p = 1.000). Complications requiring re-intervention were observed after 8 procedures, 2 complications in the RFA group (4.9%) versus 6 complications in the MWA group (7.6%, p = 0.714), of which 6 were liver-related. Ninety-day mortality did not occur. Ablation technique was not associated with unsuccessful ablations. CRLM size was associated with unsuccessful ablation in the per lesion analysis (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Intraoperative RFA and MWA were equally effective for treatment of small CRLM.

Abstract
Objectives: To retrospectively assess the efficacy of combined ablation-chemotherapy in comparison to that of chemotherapy alone in patients with liver metastasized pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (lmPDAC).Methods: In total 104 patients with hepatic oligo metastasized PDAC were identified; among them, 74 patients underwent combined thermal ablation-chemotherapy, and 30 patients underwent chemotherapy alone. Through propensity score matching, 1:1 matching of the combined ablation-chemotherapy group and chemotherapy group was achieved. The primary endpoint of this study was overall survival (OS). Clinical and tumor-related factors affecting OS were also analyzed through univariate and multivariate analyses using the Cox risk model.Results: For patients treated with combined ablation-chemotherapy, the median OS was 10.77 months, while it was 5.77 months for patients treated with chemotherapy alone (P = 0.011). The survival benefit for patients treated with combined ablation-chemotherapy was still preserved in the matched cohort, with a median OS of 8.17 months compared to 5.77 months in the chemotherapy group. Univariate and multivariate analyses in the matched population also showed treatment with combined ablation-chemotherapy was an independent prognostic factor (P < 0.05).Conclusions: For patients with liver metastases from pancreatic cancer, the combined use of thermal ablation and systemic chemotherapy offers a chance for a better survival outcome.

Abstract
Objectives This study investigated the functional mechanism of transmembrane protein 100 (TMEM100) as a tumor inhibitor gene in CRC cells and offered a reference for the treatment of CRC. Methods The mRNA expression data of CRC were acquired from the TCGA database to mine differentially expressed mRNAs. The role of TMEM100 in the progression of CRC cells was evaluated by MTT, colony formation, scratch healing, and Transwell assays. The influence of TMEM100 on the TGF-β signaling pathway was detected by western blot. Results TMEM100 was markedly lowly expressed in CRC. CRC cell growth was significantly suppressed by overexpressing TMEM100 but noticeably facilitated by silencing TMEM100. Overexpression of TMEM100 inhibited the activation of the TGF-β signaling pathway, thus inhibiting malignant progression of CRC. Conclusion TMEM100 is lowly expressed in CRC, which can suppress CRC cell growth by regulating the TGF-β signaling pathway.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effects of ablation time and distance between the radiofrequency ablation (RFA) electrode tip and a large vessel on the ablation zone in beagle livers. METHODS Sixty-one percutaneous RFA coagulation zones were created near large vessels in 10 beagle livers in vivo. The ablated lesions were divided into four groups based on ablation time and distance between the electrode tip and a large vessel (group A, 3 min 0.5 cm; group B, 3 min 0 cm; group C, 5 min 0.5 cm; group D, 5 min 0 cm). The ablated area, long-axis diameters, short-axis diameters, and vessel wall injury were examined. RESULTS With a fixed ablation time, the ablation zone created with the electrode tip at 0.5 cm from the large vessel was significantly larger than at 0 cm (p < .05). At a fixed distance between the electrode tip and vessel, the ablation zone created for 5 min was significantly larger than for 3 min (p < .05). The frequency of vessel wall injury in the 0 cm groups was significantly higher than that in the 0.5 cm groups (37.5% vs. 6.9%; p = .003, odds ratio, 7.43). The ratio of width to depth (Dw/Dz) was larger in the 0.5 cm groups than in the 0 cm groups (p < .001). CONCLUSION The ablation zone increased with longer ablation times and greater distances between the RFA tip and large vessels for perivascular lesions. The distance between the needle tip and blood vessels is an important factor that affects the overall ablation outcome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore independent risk factors for incomplete radiofrequency ablation (iRFA) of colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRLM) and evaluate adverse outcomes following iRFA. MATERIALS AND METHODS Magnetic resonance imaging data of CRLM patients who received percutaneous RFA were randomized into training (70%) and validation set 1 (30%) data sets. An independent validation set 2 was derived from computed tomography scans. Uni- and multivariate analyses identified independent risk factors for iRFA. Area under the curve (AUC) values were used to evaluate the predictive model performance. Risk points were assigned to independent predictors, and iRFA was predicted according to the total risk score. Kaplan-Meier curves were used to assess new intrahepatic metastases (NIHM), unablated tumor progression, and overall survival (OS). RESULTS Multivariate regression determined as independent iRFA risk factors perivascular tumor location, subcapsular tumor location, tumor size ≥20 mm, and minimal ablative margin ≤5 mm. The AUC values of the model in the training set, validation set 1, and validation set 2 were 0.867, 0.772, and 0.820, respectively. The respective AUC values of the total risk score were 0.864, 0.768, and 0.817. During the 6-year follow-up, the cumulative OS was significantly shorter in the iRFA than in the complete RFA group, and NIHM (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.79; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.725, 4.513) and unablated tumor progression (HR = 3.473; 95% CI: 1.506, 8.007) were more severe. CONCLUSIONS Perivascular tumor location, subcapsular tumor location, tumor size ≥20 mm, and minimal ablative margin ≤5 mm were independent risk factors for iRFA. iRFA may be a potential predictor of NIHM, unablated tumor progression, and OS.

Abstract
Purpose To compare the therapeutic outcomes between open surgical resection (OSR) and percutaneous microwave ablation (PMWA) for colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) ≤3 cm. Methods In this retrospective study, 200 consecutive patients with 306 CRLMs were reviewed. Overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), local tumour progression (LTP), intrahepatic distant recurrence, and extrahepatic metastasis were analysed to compare the therapeutic efficacy. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to identify the prognostic factors for OS and DFS. Major complications and postoperative hospital stay were also assessed. Result The 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS rates were 91.6%, 64.1%, and 46.3%, respectively, in the PMWA group and 89.7%, 62.4% and 44.7%, respectively, in the OSR group (P=0.839). The 1-, 3-, and 5-year DFS rates were 61.9%, 44.8%, and 41.3%, respectively, in the PMWA group and 58.1%, 24.4%, and 18.3%, respectively, in the OSR group (P =0.066). The two groups had comparable 5-year cumulative rates of intrahepatic distant recurrence (P=0.627) and extrahepatic metastasis (P=0.884). The 5-year cumulative LTP rate was lower in the OSR group than in the PMWA group (P=0.023). The rate of major complications was higher in the OSR group than in the PMWA group (P =0.025), and the length of hospital stay after treatment was shorter in the PMWA group (P<0.001). Conclusion There were no significant differences in OS or DFS between the two groups. PMWA was associated with increased LTP, fewer postoperative days and fewer major complications.

Abstract
Purpose To compare long-term outcomes of percutaneous radiofrequency ablation for colorectal liver metastases in perivascular versus non-perivascular locations. Methods This retrospective study included 388 consecutive patients with colorectal liver metastases (246 men, 142 women; age range 27–86 years) who underwent percutaneous radiofrequency ablation between January 2006 and December 2018. Propensity-score matching was performed for groups with perivascular and non-perivascular colorectal liver metastases. Rates of accumulative local tumor progression, overall survival, intra/extrahepatic recurrence, and complications were compared between the two groups. Results We successfully matched 104 patients each in the perivascular and non-perivascular groups (mean age: 60.1 ± 11.5 and 60.1 ± 11.3 years, respectively). Cumulative local tumor progression rates at 6 months, 1 years, 3 years, and 5 years, respectively, were 8.8%,14.8%, 18.9%, and 18.9% in the perivascular group and 8.8%, 13.1%, 15.5%, and 15.5% in the non-perivascular group. The 1-, 3-, 5-, and 10-year overall survival rates, respectively, were 91.3%, 45.6%, 23.9%, and 18.7% in the perivascular group and 88.0%, 47.2%, 27.2%, and 22.6% in the non-perivascular group. No significant between-group differences were detected in cumulative local tumor progression (p=0.567, hazard ratio: 1.224) or overall survival (p = 0.801, hazard ratio: 1.047). The major complication rate was 1.0% (1/104, p > 0.999) in both groups. Tumor size was the only independent prognostic factor for local tumor progression (hazard ratio: 2.314; p = 0.002). On multivariate analysis for overall colorectal liver metastases, tumor diameter >3 cm, tumor location in the right colon, multiple tumors, and extrahepatic metastases before radiofrequency ablation (hazard ratios: 2.046, 1.920, 1.706, and 1.892, respectively; all p < 0.001) and intrahepatic recurrence (hazard ratio: 1.564; p = 0.002) were associated with poor overall survival. Conclusion Cumulative local tumor progression, overall survival, and major complications rates did not differ significantly between perivascular and non-perivascular colorectal liver metastases after percutaneous radiofrequency ablation. For perivascular colorectal liver metastases, percutaneous radiofrequency ablation is a safe and effective treatment option.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, safety and efficacy of percutaneous ablation (PA) of obscure hypovascular liver tumors in challenging locations using arterial CT-portography (ACP) guidance. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 26 patients with a total of 28 obscure, hypovascular malignant liver tumors were included. There were 18 men and 6 women with a mean age of 58±14 (SD) years (range: 37-75 years). The tumors had a mean diameter of 14±10 (SD) mm (range: 7-24mm) and were intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (4/28; 14%), liver metastases from colon cancer (18/28; 64%), corticosurrenaloma (3/28; 11%) or liver metastases from breast cancer (3/28; 11%). All tumors were in challenging locations including subcapsular (14/28; 50%), liver dome (9/28; 32%) or perihilar (5/28; 18%) locations. A total of 28 PA (12 radiofrequency ablations, 11 microwave ablations and 5 irreversible electroporations) procedures were performed under ACP guidance. RESULTS A total of 67 needles [mean: 2.5±1.5 (SD); range: 1-5] were inserted under ACP guidance, with a 100% technical success rate for PA. Median total effective dose was 26.5 mSv (IQR: 19.1, 32.2 mSv). Two complications were encountered (pneumothorax; one abscess both with full recovery), yielding a complication rate of 7%. No significant change in mean creatinine clearance was observed (80.5mL/min at baseline and 85.3mL/min at day 7; P=0.8). Post-treatment evaluation of the ablation zone was overestimated on ACP compared with conventional CT examination in 3/28 tumors (11%). After a median follow-up of 20 months (range: 12-35 months), local tumor progression was observed in 2/28 tumours (7%). CONCLUSION ACP guidance is feasible and allows safe and effective PA of obscure hypo-attenuating liver tumors in challenging locations without damaging the renal function and with acceptable radiation exposure. Post-treatment assessment should be performed using conventional CT or MRI to avoid size overestimation of the ablation zone.

Abstract
PURPOSE Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is increasingly being used to treat unresectable liver tumors. Complete ablation of the tumor and a safety margin is necessary to prevent local recurrence. With current electrodes, size and shape of the ablation zone are highly variable leading to unsatisfactory local recurrence rates, especially for tumors >3 cm. In order to improve predictability, we recently developed a system with four simple electrodes with complete ablation in between the electrodes. This rather small but reliable ablation zone is considered as a building block for matrix radiofrequency ablation (MRFA). In the current study we explored the influence of the electric mode (monopolar or bipolar) and the activation mode (consecutive, simultaneous or switching) on the size and geometry of the ablation zone. MATERIALS AND METHODS The four electrode system was applied in ex vivo bovine liver. The electric and the activation mode were changed one by one, using constant power of 50 W in all experiments. Size and geometry of the ablation zone were measured. Finite element method (FEM) modelling of the experiment was performed. RESULTS In ex vivo liver, a complete and predictable coagulation zone of a 3 × 2 × 2 cm block was obtained most efficiently in the bipolar simultaneous mode due to the combination of the higher heating efficacy of the bipolar mode and the lower impedance by the simultaneous activation of four electrodes, as supported by the FEM simulation. CONCLUSIONS In ex vivo liver, the four electrode system used in a bipolar simultaneous mode offers the best perspectives as building block for MRFA. These results should be confirmed by in vivo experiments.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Local ablative therapies (LAT) have shown positive but heterogenous outcomes in the treatment of colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate LAT and compare them with surgical resection. METHODS In accordance with PRISMA guidelines, Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane and Web of Science databases were searched for reports published before January 2019. We included papers assessing radiofrequency ablation (RFA), microwave ablation (MWA), cryoablation (CA) and electroporation (IRE) treating resectable CRLM with curative intention. We evaluated LAT related complications and oncological outcomes as tumour progression (LTP), disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). RESULTS The literature search yielded 6767 records; 20 papers (860 patients) were included. No included studies related mortality with LAT. Median adverse events percentage was 7%: (8% RFA;7% MWA). Median 3y-DFS was 32% (24% RFA; 60% MWA); 5y-DFS was 27%: (18% RFA; 38.5% MWA). Median 3y-OS was 59% (60% RFA; 70% MWA; 34% CA), 5y-OS was 44.5% (43% RFA; 55% MWA; 20% CA). Surgical resection showed decreased LTP, improved DFS and OS than those reported with LAT, with RFA accounting for reduced 1y-DFS (RR 0.83, 95%CI 0.71-0.98), 3y-DFS (RR 0.5, 95%CI 0.33-0.76), 5y-DFS (RR 0.53, 95%CI 0.28-0.98) and 5y-OS (RR 0.76, 95%CI 0.58-0.98) in comparison with surgical resection. CONCLUSIONS Low quality evidence suggests that both RFA and MWA seem superior to CA. MWA presents similar adverse events when compared to RFA with a possible increase in DFS and OS. Surgical resection still seems to provide superior DFS and OS in comparison with LAT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aberrant expression of stanniocalcin 2 (STC2) is implicated in colon adenocarcinoma (COAD). A previous study identified that STC2 functions as a tumor promoter to drive development of some cancers, but the role of its overexpression in the development of COAD remains unclear. AIM To evaluate the regulation mechanism of STC2 overexpression in COAD. METHODS The expression of STC2 in COAD was assessed by TCGA COAD database and GEO (GSE50760). Methylation level of the STC2 promoter was evaluated with beta value in UALCAN platform, and the correlation between STC2 expression and survival rate was investigated with TCGA COAD. Transcription binding site prediction was conducted by TRANSFAC and LASAGNA, and a luciferase reporter system was used to identify STC2 promoter activity in several cell lines, including HEK293T, NCM460, HT29, SW480, and HCT116. Western blotting was performed to evaluate the role of Sp1 on the expression of STC2. RESULTS The central finding of this work is that STC2 is overexpressed in COAD tissues and positively correlated with poor prognosis. Importantly, the binding site of the transcription factor Sp1 is widely located in the promoter region of STC2. A luciferase reporter system was successfully constructed to analyze the transcription activity of STC2, and knocking down the expression of Sp1 significantly inhibited the transcription activity of STC2. Furthermore, inhibition of Sp1 remarkably decreased protein levels of STC2. CONCLUSION Our data provide evidence that the transcription factor Sp1 is essential for the overexpression of STC2 in COAD through activation of promoter activity. Taken together, our finding provides new insights into the mechanism of oncogenic function of COAD by STC2.
