Abstract
The ideal hemostatic agents should be able to stop bleeding quickly and avoid secondary bleeding caused by adhesion with blood clots during dressing change. Herein, a hydrophobic electrospun nanofiber membrane was prepared for achieving hemostasis, rationally targeting both attributes, via doping N-alkylated chitosan (N-CS) grafted with octadecyl into chitosan/polyethylene oxide (PEO). In vitro and in vivo coagulation tests showed that CPNs doped with small amounts of N-CS (CPN31) could significantly shorten hemostasis time and promote the formation of more stable and stronger blood clots. In particular, the whole blood clotting time of CPN31 (58.8 ± 2.2 s) was significantly lower than that of chitosan/PEO (CPN0) nanofiber membrane (67 ± 3.5 s) and the medical sterile gauze (86.7 ± 0.6 s). Furthermore, due to the hemophobic nature of CPNs, blood wetting of the dressing was severely limited and blood can coagulated at the site of liver injury in rats, thus reducing blood loss and allowing rapid removal of the dressing without triggering secondary hemorrhage. The CPN31 exhibited excellent hemostasis properties, easy to remove, blood compatibility, biocompatibility and promoting fibroblast proliferation properties. This hydrophobic CPNs is a promising biological adhesive for hemorrhage control.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the content of caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection (HPLC-DAD) in beverages commonly consumed in Lima, Peru. The samples were divided into 6 groups (herbal teas, coffee powder, chocolate milks, soft drinks, sports drinks, and energy drinks) which included the five most commonly consumed beverages of the different groups. Caffeine was mainly identified in the soft drink and energy drink groups, with the latter having a more significant value (10.38 ± 0.01 vs. 95.50 ± 3.48 mg/L, respectively). In herbal teas, caffeine showed the highest content (0.47 ± 0.01 to 4.91 ± 0.05 mg/L), despite theophylline being a characteristic compound of tea leaves. Sports drinks presented very low caffeine levels (0.03 ± 0.01 to 0.05 ± 0.01 mg/L), and theobromine (0.48 ± 0.01 to 6.00 ± 0.02) was also identified. Caffeine (4.09 ± 0.01 to 5.70 ± 0.01 mg/L) and theobromine (1.70 ± 0.01 to 12.24 ± 0.01 mg/L) were found in the five commercial brands of chocolate milk evaluated. Moreover, the group of coffee powder samples had the highest level of caffeine content (49.25 ± 0.24 to 964.40 ± 4.93 mg/100 g). The results obtained in this study provide reliable information on the composition and quantification of methylxanthines in the beverages most consumed in Lima and impact consumer knowledge.

Abstract
Energy drinks (EDs) are beverages similar to soft drinks, characterized by high caffeine concentrations with additional ingredients like taurine and vitamins, marketed for boosting energy, reducing tiredness, increasing concentration, and for their ergogenic effect. The majority of consumers are children, adolescents, and young athletes. Although EDs companies claim about the ergogenic and remineralizing properties of their products, there is a serious lack of evidence at preclinical as well as clinical level to validate their benefits. The regular intake and long-term consequences of these caffeinated drinks are not well documented, especially the possible negative effects in adolescents whose brain is still developing. EDs combined with alcohol are also gaining popularity among adolescents and different publications indicate that this combined consumption might increase the risk to develop an alcohol use disorder, as well as produce serious adverse cardiovascular effects. There is an increasing need to disseminate knowledge on EDs damage on health, so that adolescents can be aware about the potential harmful outcomes of consuming these drinks.

Abstract
Background and aims Sichuan dark tea (ST), Zangcha, is a traditional fermented Chinese tea found in Sichuan and Tibet and claimed for beneficial effects against lifestyle-related metabolic disorders. We examined the effects of ST on lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis. Methods and results Sichuan dark tea was given to fat-rich diet-induced atherosclerosis model rats in comparison with dark-fermented Chinese Pu-erh tea (PT) and Japanese green tea (GT). After 8 weeks of feeding, ST and PT induced an increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and a decrease in glucose, and ST decreased triglyceride in plasma. ST also induced low pH in the cecum. There was no significant change in their body weight among the fat-feeding groups but a decrease was found in the visceral fat and liver weight in the ST group. Accordingly, ST reduced lipid deposition in the aorta in comparison with PT and GT. ST increased mRNA of LXRα, PPARα, PPARγ, and ABCA1 in the rat liver. The extract of ST stimulated the AMPK pathway to increase the expression of ABCA1 in J774 cells and increased expression of lipoprotein lipase and hormone-sensitive lipase in 3T3L1 cells, consistent with its anti-atherogenic effects in rats. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis showed unique spectra of original specific compounds of caffeine and catechins in each tea extract, but none of them was likely responsible for these effects. Conclusion Sichuan dark tea increases plasma HDL and reduces plasma triglyceride to decrease atherosclerosis through AMPK activation. Further study is required to identify specific components for the effects of this tea preparation.

Abstract
Purpose: The consumption of caffeinated beverages has significantly increased among young people in recent years. The objective of the study is to investigate the acute effects of caffeinated beverages on electrocardiographic and hemodynamic parameters of young adults.
Materials and Methods: Study was designed as a non-randomized, non-placebo controlled, three-arm parallel assignment. It was conducted on 56 individuals selected from a pool of students enrolled at Aydın Adnan Menderes University. Energy drink, coffee, cola and control groups were determined according to the results of the applicant acceptance questionnaire. Blood pressure and electrocardiogram were measured before and after consuming the drinks at 30 minutes and 60 minutes. Heart rate variability was detected from electrocardiogram signal and investigated by linear analysis.
Results: All caffeinated drinks increased the blood pressure. Only, heart rate was increased by energy drink and cola. There was a small increment in root-mean square differences of successive R-R intervals and the number of times successive heartbeat intervals exceed 50ms (NN50) values in coffee group. High frequency (HF) values were increased some for coffee and cola groups. But, low frequency (LF) and LF/HF values were decreased. These alterations were statistically significant for coffee group. PR interval and QRS complex did not alter, however, QTc interval was lower in energy drink and cola groups.
Conclusion: Caffeinated beverage consumption has the potential to induce adverse effects on cardiovascular system of young adults. Coffee appears to be more prominent than energy drink and cola.

Abstract
Increasing evidence on the significance of nutrition in reproduction is emerging from both animal and human studies, suggesting a mutual association between nutrition and female fertility. Different “fertile” dietary patterns have been studied; however, in humans, conflicting results or weak correlations are often reported, probably because of the individual variations in genome, proteome, metabolome, and microbiome and the extent of exposure to different environmental conditions. In this scenario, “precision nutrition”, namely personalized dietary patterns based on deep phenotyping and on metabolomics, microbiome, and nutrigenetics of each case, might be more efficient for infertile patients than applying a generic nutritional approach. In this review, we report on new insights into the nutritional management of infertile patients, discussing the main nutrigenetic, nutrigenomic, and microbiomic aspects that should be investigated to achieve effective personalized nutritional interventions. Specifically, we will focus on the management of low-grade chronic inflammation, which is associated with several infertility-related diseases.

Abstract
Aim Energy drinks (ED) contain high levels of caffeine and taurine and are associated with several cardiovascular effects. We investigated acute effects of consuming low caffeine and taurine content ED on left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) function assessed by conventional and two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography.Material and methods In this crossover study, 34 healthy adults, age 19-48 yrs, drank an ED containing 53.25 milligrams of caffeine, 284 mg of taurine, or an equal volume of control drink (CD) on two separate sessions, 7-10 days apart. Standard echocardiographic and speckle tracking imaging were performed before and 60 min after consumption of the study beverages.Results Compared to CD, ED caused a significant increase in tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (p=0.04) and RV systolic wave velocity (p=0.01) with no effect on global longitudinal strain when compared to CD. LV systolic function was not altered, but mitral early diastolic velocity by tissue Doppler imaging was significantly higher (p=0.031), and early diastolic strain rate, as measured by speckle tracking echocardiography, was significantly lower (p=0.022).Conclusion Reduced caffeine and taurine content ED does not affect LV systolic function, but increases RV longitudinal contractility and improves LV early diastolic filling.

Abstract
Coffee consumption has been associated with the reduction of several chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity. The aim of this review was to summarize the research conducted in the last five years (or older, when appropriate) on the relationship between the consumption of coffee bioactive compounds, obesity, and T2DM. A bibliographic search was performed using the Web of Sciences, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Keywords used were "caffeine," "coffee," "coffee consumption," "coffee extraction," "coffee bioactive components," "chlorogenic acid," "obesity," "antidiabetic," and "antiadipogenic." Epidemiological, clinical, animal, and cell culture studies were reviewed. Caffeine, chlorogenic acid, and diterpenes have been identified as potential bioactive compounds in coffee that exhibit antiadipogenic and antidiabetic effects. The concentration of these compounds in coffee depends on the coffee preparation method. The relationship between coffee consumption and obesity risk is inconsistent, as not all results report a positive association. The addition of sugar and cream may be responsible for these mixed results. The consumption of coffee and its constituents is consistently associated with a lower T2DM risk. Caffeine, chlorogenic acids, and diterpenes have antidiabetic properties and are associated with these effects. The available data do not allow us to draw a conclusion on the effect of coffee or its constituents on adipogenesis. Therefore, more tightly controlled human intervention studies are required for a deeper understanding about this relationship.

Abstract
In an attempt to prove biological activity enhancement upon particle size reduction to the nanoscale, coffee (Cf) was chosen to be formulated into poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs) using the single emulsion-solvent evaporation (SE-SE) method via Box-Behnken Design (BBD) to study the impact of certain process and formulation parameters on the particle size and size homogeneity, surface stability and encapsulation efficiency (EE%). The coffee-loaded PLGA (PLGA-Cf) NPs were characterized by different methods to aid in selecting the optimum formulation conditions. The desirable physicochemical characteristics involved small particle sizes with an average of 318.60 ± 5.65 nm, uniformly distributed within a narrow range (PDI of 0.074 ± 0.015), with considerable stability (Zeta Potential of -20.50 ± 0.52 mV) and the highest EE% (85.92 ± 4.01%). The antioxidant and anticancer activities of plain PLGA NPs, pure Cf and the optimum PLGA-Cf NPs, were evaluated using 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays, respectively. As a result of nano-encapsulation, antioxidant activity was enhanced by 26.5%. Encapsulated Cf showed higher anticancer potency than pure Cf against different cancerous cell lines with an increase of 86.78%, 78.17%, 85.84% and 84.84% against MCF-7, A-549, HeLa and HepG-2, respectively. The in vitro release followed the Weibull release model with slow and biphasic release profile in both tested pH media, 7.4 and 5.5.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Energy drink consumption is increasing among the population, especially adolescents and young adults. The health effects of energy drinks are unknown. In this study, we investigate the effects of low caffeine energy drinks on endothelial functions assessed by flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery. METHODS Thirty healthy volunteers (15 men, 15 women) aged 19 to 46 years participated in the study. Flow-mediated dilation measurements of the brachial artery were performed and recorded per protocol. The volunteers were asked to drink 355 mL of energy drink containing 53.25 mg of caffeine after baseline measurements, and all measurements were repeated 60 minutes later. Baseline and post-energy drink values were compared. RESULTS Systolic blood pressure (p=0.592), diastolic blood pressure (p=0.714), and heart rate values (p=0.056) were similar before and after the consumption of energy drinks. Preocclusion arterial diameters (p=0.236) and blood velocities (p=0.447) did not change after energy drink consumption. FMD levels were 9.2%±4.6% and 8.1%±4.7%, respectively, before and after energy drink consumption (p=0.176). Women had a 3% increase in preocclusion arterial diameters after energy drink consumption, whereas men had a 2.6% decrease (p=0.026) Conclusion: Low caffeine energy drinks containing 53.25 mg of caffeine/355 mL can did not have any influence on blood pressure, heart rate, or endothelial functions in healthy volunteers.

Abstract
An increasing number of cardiovascular adverse effects, emergency room visits, and deaths have been linked to energy drinks. In this review, we summarized available published literature assessing electrophysiological and ischemic adverse effects associated with energy drink consumption. Overall, 32 case reports and 19 clinical trials are included in this review. Ventricular arrhythmia, supraventricular arrhythmia, and myocardial ischemia were amongst the most commonly reported in case reports with 3 having a fatal outcome. Although serious ischemic changes, arrhythmias, or death were not observed in clinical trials, significant electrophysiological changes, such as PR/PQ interval shortening/prolongation, QT/QTc shortening/prolongation, and ST-T changes, were noted. QT/QTc interval prolongation appears to be the most significant finding in clinical trials, and there appears to be a dose-response relationship between energy drink consumption and QTc prolongation. The exact mechanisms and the particular combination of ingredients behind energy drink-induced cardiac abnormalities require further evaluation. Until more information is available, energy drink use should be considered as part of the differential diagnosis in appropriate patients presenting with electrocardiographic changes. Further, certain patient populations should exercise caution and limit their energy drink consumption.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cardiovascular side effects associated with energy drink consumption may be related to effects on vascular endothelial function, heart rate, blood pressure, and electrocardiogram parameters. We sought to measure them following energy drink consumption. METHODS Forty-four healthy non-smoking young volunteer medical students, at an average age of 24.7 years (range 23-27 years, 34 males), with an average BMI of 23.4, received electrocardiograms and had their heart rates and blood pressures taken. Subjects then underwent baseline testing of endothelial function using the technique of endothelium-dependent flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) with high-resolution ultrasound. The subjects then drank an energy drink (24 oz Monster Energy Drink®). Hemodynamic measurements were repeated 15 and 90 min later. FMD and the electrocardiogram were repeated 90 min later. The FMD was calculated as the ratio of the post-cuff release and the baseline diameter. RESULTS Energy drink consumption resulted in a significantly attenuated peak FMD response (mean ± SD): baseline 5.1 ± 4.1% versus post-energy drink (2.8 ± 3.8%; p = 0.004). In addition, systolic and diastolic blood pressures and heart rate increased after 15 min. Diastolic blood pressure and heart rate remained increased 90 min following energy drink consumption. There were no significant changes in electrocardiogram parameters. CONCLUSION Energy drink consumption was associated with an acute significant impairment in endothelial function in young healthy adults as well as with significant hemodynamic changes. As energy drinks are becoming more popular, it is important to study their effects to better determine safe consumption patterns.

Abstract
Coffee infused with the additive Eurycoma longifolia, also known as Tongkat ali (TA), has become widely available in the Malaysian market. Safety evaluations for consumption of the products have been called for due to the herbal addition. This study investigates the acute, subacute and chronic effects of a commercial TA coffee in Sprague Dawley rats when given in a single, repeated and prolonged dosage. The dosages of 0.005, 0.05, 0.30 and 2 g/kg body weight (BW) were used in the acute study and 0.14, 0.29 and 1 g/kg BW were used in the repeated dose studies. The in-life parameters measured were food and water intake, body weight and clinical observations. Blood were collected for hematology and clinical biochemistry analyses. All animals were subjected to full necropsies. Non-toxicity-related changes were observed in the food and water consumption parameters. Body weight showed normal increments and none of the animals had any clinical signs of toxicity. Microscopically assessed organ tissues did not reveal any abnormalities. There was significant decrease of platelet count in all the chronic study male treated groups. Significant elevation of renal profile parameters in both gender groups given 0.29 g/kg BW, along with liver and lipid profile elevation in some female groups of the chronic study were noted. No dose-dependent relationship was apparent in the dosage range tested, though these changes may suggest an initial safety indication to the TA coffee. The study concludes that the no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) for this commercial TA coffee was 1 g/kg BW.

Abstract
The aim of this review is to offer dietary advice for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) and neurogenic bowel dysfunction. With this in mind, we consider health conditions that are dependent on the level of lesion including skeletal muscle atrophy, autonomic dysreflexia and neurogenic bladder. In addition, SCI is often associated with a sedentary lifestyle, which increases risk for osteoporosis and diseases associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, including cardiovascular and chronic kidney diseases. The Mediterranean diet, along with exercise and dietary supplements, has been suggested as an anti-inflammatory intervention in individuals with SCI. However, individuals with chronic SCI have a daily intake of whole fruit, vegetables and whole grains lower than the recommended dietary allowance for the general population. Some studies have reported an increase in neurogenic bowel dysfunction symptoms after high fiber intake; therefore, this finding could explain the low consumption of plant foods. Low consumption of fibre induces dysbiosis, which is associated with both endotoxemia and inflammation. Dysbiosis can be reduced by exercise and diet in individuals with SCI. Therefore, to summarize our viewpoint, we developed a Mediterranean diet-based diet and exercise pyramid to integrate nutritional recommendations and exercise guidelines. Nutritional guidelines come from previously suggested recommendations for military veterans with disabilities and individuals with SCI, chronic kidney diseases, chronic pain and irritable bowel syndrome. We also considered the recent exercise guidelines and position stands for adults with SCI to improve muscle strength, flexibility and cardiorespiratory fitness and to obtain cardiometabolic benefits. Finally, dietary advice for Paralympic athletes is suggested.
