Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the levels of tumor markers-specifically, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and Ca19-9 antigen-determined in both serum (sCEA and sCa19-9) and intraoperative peritoneal washings (pCEA and pCa19-9) and the advanced stage of gastric cancer (including the occurrence of cancer cells in cytology from abdominal fluid). METHODS This study included 47 patients with histopathologically confirmed gastric cancer or gastroesophageal junction cancer who underwent surgical treatment. The material for the cytological examination and assessment of CEA and Ca19-9 concentrations in peritoneal fluid was collected intraoperatively. Later, blood was drawn to assess the CEA and Ca19-9 concentrations in blood serum. RESULTS There was a statistical correlation between a positive cytology result or the presence of peritoneal carcinomatosis and a positive result for the tumor markers obtained from abdominal washings. This correlation was not observed with marker levels obtained from blood serum. The pCEA marker was highly sensitive (93.3%) and specific (93.8%) for detecting cancer cells. The pCa19-9 marker was less effective in detecting cancer but matched pCEA in identifying the absence of cancer. No differences were observed in sCEA and sCA19-9 levels between patients who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy and those who did not receive this treatment. However, statistical analysis showed that this relationship did not apply to pCEA and pCa19-9 levels. CONCLUSIONS Intraoperative determinations of tumor marker levels in peritoneal washings may be a predictive factor for a poor prognosis in patients with gastric cancer.

Abstract
The liver is a frequent site of metastasis in advanced gastric cancer (GC). Despite significant advancements in diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, the overall survival rate for patients afflicted with gastric cancer liver metastasis (GCLM) remains dismally low. Precision oncology has made significant progress in identifying therapeutic targets and enhancing our understanding of metastasis mechanisms through genome sequencing and molecular characterization. Therefore, it is crucial to have a comprehensive understanding of the various molecular processes involved in GCLM and the fundamental principles of systemic therapy to develop new treatment approaches. This paper aims to review recent findings on the diagnosis, potential biomarkers, and therapies targeting the multiple molecular processes of GCLM, with the goal of improving treatment strategies for patients with GCLM.

Abstract
Background: Although gastric adenocarcinoma (GA) related ocular metastasis (OM) is rare, its occurrence indicates a more severe disease. We aimed to utilize machine learning (ML) to analyze the risk factors of GA-related OM and predict its risks. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. The clinical data of 3532 GA patients were collected and randomly classified into training and validation sets in a ratio of 7:3. Those with or without OM were classified into OM and non-OM (NOM) groups. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator were conducted. We integrated the variables identified through feature importance ranking and further refined the selection process using forward sequential feature selection based on random forest (RF) algorithm before incorporating them into the ML model. We applied six ML algorithms to construct the predictive GA model. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve indicated the model's predictive ability. Also, we established a network risk calculator based on the best performance model. We used Shapley additive interpretation (SHAP) to identify risk factors and to confirm the interpretability of the black box model. We have de-identified all patient details. Results: The ML model, consisting of 13 variables, achieved an optimal predictive performance using the gradient boosting machine (GBM) model, with an impressive area under the curve (AUC) of 0.997 in the test set. Utilizing the SHAP method, we identified crucial factors for OM in GA patients, including LDL, CA724, CEA, AFP, CA125, Hb, CA153, and Ca2+. Additionally, we validated the model's reliability through an analysis of two patient cases and developed a functional online web prediction calculator based on the GBM model. Conclusion: We used the ML method to establish a risk prediction model for GA-related OM and showed that GBM performed best among the six ML models. The model may identify patients with GA-related OM to provide early and timely treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There is a lack of research evaluating the effect of tumor markers for prognosis in cervical adenocarcinoma. We aimed to develop and validate a preoperative tumor-marker-based model including clinicopathological factors to clarify the prognostic value of endocervical adenocarcinoma. METHODS A total of 572 patients with cervical adenocarcinoma who were staged at the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) IA-IIA were reviewed retrospectively. Preoperative serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate antigen (CA)-125 and CA19-9 levels were measured. The survival and recurrence patterns were analyzed according to the tumor-marker-related stratification. The predictive values of biomarkers and clinical variables were assessed with Cox regression and competing risk models. RESULTS Patients with elevated preoperative tumor markers had evidently poor overall survival and recurrence-free survival. The triple-elevated tumor marker (TETM) subgroup had the worst overall survival and progression-free survival than the triple-negative tumor marker (TNTM) subgroup and the single-elevated tumor marker (SETM) subgroup. The most important predictors for overall survival were elevated tumor markers, FIGO-stage, tumor differentiation, lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) and lymph nodes metastasis. The most important predictors for recurrence-free survival were elevated tumor markers, FIGO-stage, tumor differentiation, LVSI and deep stromal invasion. Stratified analysis showed that elevated CA-125 and CA19-9 were significantly associated with postoperative distant metastasis. A decision curve analysis confirmed that a combination of tumor markers as predictors significantly outperformed the other common predictors used (FIGO-stage, intermediate and high-risk factors, tumor differentiation, lymph nodes). CONCLUSIONS Elevated preoperative serum CEA, CA-125, and CA19-9 levels exhibited poor overall survival and recurrence-free survival in cervical adenocarcinoma patients. Combined preoperative serum CA-125 and CA19-9 independently predicted distant metastasis in patients with endocervical adenocarcinoma.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to define the importance of peritoneal CEA (pCEA) as a prognostic factor of overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in gastric cancer (GC) patients surgically treated with a curative intent In our department. A total of 64 patients affected by gastric cancer with intraoperatively measurement of CEA on peritoneal lavage were enrolled in the study. Patients were divided into two groups: (A) the peritoneal lavage CEA ( -) with CEA < 0.5 ng/ml and (B) the peritoneal lavage CEA ( +) with CEA ≥ 0.5 ng/ml. Then we analyzed OS and DFS of the two groups correlating them to others clinico-pathological features. Furthermore, we investigated the correlation between pCEA and peritoneal cytology. We demonstrated a strong significant difference in OS and in DFS in CEA ( +) patients. We emphasized that pCEA had a strong survival impact, in both OS and DFS, in selected patients affected by diffuse histotype GC (p = 0.0048 and p = 0.0030 respectively), stage III (p = 0.015 and p = 0.021, respectively) and distal gastric cancer (p = 0.0036 and p = 0.0017, respectively). There is a strong need to recognize prognostic factors that can help clinicians to stratify patients at high risk to develop post-surgical recurrences and moreover to recognize who could benefit from an aggressive surgical treatment of cytoreductive surgery and intra-peritoneal chemotherapy.pCEA is a good predictor of survival in advanced gastric cancer and could discriminate which patients need a more accurate follow-up program and an intensive therapeutic strategy.

Abstract
After revolutionizing the field of electro-optic displays, liquid crystals (LCs) are emerging as functional soft materials with wide-ranging biomedical implications. Integrating smart sensor designs with label-free imaging presents exciting opportunities in diagnostics. In this Perspective, we present an elegant collage of the key findings that demonstrate the utility of LC biosensors in diagnosing a disease or infection in clinical samples, cellular microenvironments, or bodily fluids. We emphasize the currently prevalent diagnostic techniques and the advances made using LCs in achieving greater sensitivity, a simplified strategy, multiplexed detection, and so on. We collate the landmark contributions in translational research in LC-based diagnostics. We believe that developing LC-based biosensors presents a new therapeutic window in point-of-care diagnostics.

Abstract
The most common subtype of ovarian cancer (OC) is the high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC), accounting for 70%–80% of all OC deaths. Although HGSOC is a potentially immunogenic tumor, clinical studies assessing the effectiveness of inhibitors of programmed death protein and its ligand (PD-1/PD-L1) in OC patients so far showed only response rates <15%. However, recent studies revealed an interesting prognostic role of plasma PD-1/PD-L1 and other circulating immunoregulatory molecules, such as the B- and T-lymphocyte attenuator (BTLA), butyrophilin sub-family 3A/CD277 receptors (BTN3A), and butyrophilin sub-family 2 member A1 (BTN2A1), in several solid tumors. Since evidence showed the prognostic relevance of pretreatment serum CA125 levels in OC, the aim of our study was to investigate if soluble forms of inhibitory immune checkpoints can enhance prognostic power of CA125 in advanced HGSOC women. Using specific ELISA tests, we examined the circulating PD-1, PD-L1, pan-BTN3As, BTN3A1, BTN2A1, and BTLA levels in 100 advanced HGSOC patients before treatment, correlating them with baseline serum CA125, age at diagnosis, body mass index (BMI), and peritoneal carcinomatosis. A multivariate analysis revealed that plasma BTN3A1 ≤4.75 ng/ml (HR, 1.94; 95% CI, 1.23–3.07; p=0.004), age at diagnosis ≤60 years (HR, 1.65; 95% CI, 1.05–2.59; p=0.03) and absence of peritoneal carcinomatosis (HR, 2.65; 95% CI, 1.66–4.22; p<0.0001) were independent prognostic factors for a longer progression-free survival (PFS) (≥30 months) in advanced HGSOC women. However, further two-factor multivariate analyses highlighted that baseline serum CA125 levels >401 U/ml and each soluble protein above respective concentration cutoff were covariates associated with shorter PFS (<30 months) and unfavorable clinical outcome, suggesting that contemporary measurement of both biomarkers than CA125 only could strengthen prognostic power of serum CA125 in predicting PFS of advanced HGSOC women. Plasma PD-L1, PD-1, BTN3A1, pan-sBTN3As, BTN2A1, or BTLA levels could be helpful biomarkers to increase prognostic value of CA125.

Abstract
Neoantigens are ideal targets for dendritic cell (DC) vaccines. So far, only a few neoantigen-based DC vaccines have been investigated in clinical trials. Here, we reported a case of a patient with metastatic gastric cancer who received personalized neoantigen-loaded monocyte-derived dendritic cell (Neo-MoDC) vaccines followed by combination therapy of the Neo-MoDC and immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI). The patient developed T cell responses against neoantigens after receiving the Neo-MoDC vaccine alone. The following combination therapy triggered a stronger immune response and mediated complete regression of all tumors for over 25 months till October, 2021. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells recognized seven of the eight vaccine neoantigens. And the frequency of neoantigen-specific T cell clones increased obviously after vaccination. Overall, this report describing a complete tumor regression in a gastric cancer patient mediated by Neo-MoDC vaccine in combination with ICI, and suggesting a promising treatment for patients with metastatic gastric cancer.

Abstract
Neoantigens are ideal targets for dendritic cell (DC) vaccines. So far, only a few neoantigen-based DC vaccines have been investigated in clinical trials. Here, we reported a case of a patient with metastatic gastric cancer who received personalized neoantigen-loaded monocyte-derived dendritic cell (Neo-MoDC) vaccines followed by combination therapy of the Neo-MoDC and immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI). The patient developed T cell responses against neoantigens after receiving the Neo-MoDC vaccine alone. The following combination therapy triggered a stronger immune response and mediated complete regression of all tumors for over 25 months till October, 2021. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells recognized seven of the eight vaccine neoantigens. And the frequency of neoantigen-specific T cell clones increased obviously after vaccination. Overall, this report describing a complete tumor regression in a gastric cancer patient mediated by Neo-MoDC vaccine in combination with ICI, and suggesting a promising treatment for patients with metastatic gastric cancer.

The following combination therapy triggered a stronger immune response and mediated complete regression of all tumors for over 25 months till October, 2021. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells recognized seven of the eight vaccine neoantigens. And the frequency of neoantigen-specific T cell clones increased obviously after vaccination. Overall, this report describing a complete tumor regression in a gastric cancer patient mediated by Neo-MoDC vaccine in combination with ICI, and suggesting a promising treatment for patients with metastatic gastric cancer.

Here, we reported a case of a patient with metastatic gastric cancer who received personalized neoantigen-loaded monocyte-derived dendritic cell (Neo-MoDC) vaccines followed by combination therapy of the Neo-MoDC and immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI). The patient developed T cell responses against neoantigens after receiving the Neo-MoDC vaccine alone. The following combination therapy triggered a stronger immune response and mediated complete regression of all tumors for over 25 months till October, 2021. Abstract
Neoantigens are ideal targets for dendritic cell (DC) vaccines. So far, only a few neoantigen-based DC vaccines have been investigated in clinical trials. Here, we reported a case of a patient with metastatic gastric cancer who received personalized neoantigen-loaded monocyte-derived dendritic cell (Neo-MoDC) vaccines followed by combination therapy of the Neo-MoDC and immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI). The patient developed T cell responses against neoantigens after receiving the Neo-MoDC vaccine alone. The following combination therapy triggered a stronger immune response and mediated complete regression of all tumors for over 25 months till October, 2021. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells recognized seven of the eight vaccine neoantigens. And the frequency of neoantigen-specific T cell clones increased obviously after vaccination. Overall, this report describing a complete tumor regression in a gastric cancer patient mediated by Neo-MoDC vaccine in combination with ICI, and suggesting a promising treatment for patients with metastatic gastric cancer.

Abstract
Neoantigens are ideal targets for dendritic cell (DC) vaccines. So far, only a few neoantigen-based DC vaccines have been investigated in clinical trials. Here, we reported a case of a patient with metastatic gastric cancer who received personalized neoantigen-loaded monocyte-derived dendritic cell (Neo-MoDC) vaccines followed by combination therapy of the Neo-MoDC and immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI). The patient developed T cell responses against neoantigens after receiving the Neo-MoDC vaccine alone. The following combination therapy triggered a stronger immune response and mediated complete regression of all tumors for over 25 months till October, 2021. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells recognized seven of the eight vaccine neoantigens. And the frequency of neoantigen-specific T cell clones increased obviously after vaccination. Overall, this report describing a complete tumor regression in a gastric cancer patient mediated by Neo-MoDC vaccine in combination with ICI, and suggesting a promising treatment for patients with metastatic gastric cancer.

Abstract
Neoantigens are ideal targets for dendritic cell (DC) vaccines. So far, only a few neoantigen-based DC vaccines have been investigated in clinical trials. Here, we reported a case of a patient with metastatic gastric cancer who received personalized neoantigen-loaded monocyte-derived dendritic cell (Neo-MoDC) vaccines followed by combination therapy of the Neo-MoDC and immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI). The patient developed T cell responses against neoantigens after receiving the Neo-MoDC vaccine alone. The following combination therapy triggered a stronger immune response and mediated complete regression of all tumors for over 25 months till October, 2021. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells recognized seven of the eight vaccine neoantigens. And the frequency of neoantigen-specific T cell clones increased obviously after vaccination. Overall, this report describing a complete tumor regression in a gastric cancer patient mediated by Neo-MoDC vaccine in combination with ICI, and suggesting a promising treatment for patients with metastatic gastric cancer.

Abstract
Mesothelin (MSLN) is a protein expressed in the mesothelial cell lining of the pleura, peritoneum, and pericardium; its biological functions in normal cells are still unknown. Experimental studies using knockout mice have suggested that this molecule does not play an important role in development and reproduction. In contrast, it has been observed that this molecule is produced in abnormal amounts in several malignant neoplasms, such as mesotheliomas and pancreatic adenocarcinomas. Many molecular studies have also demonstrated that mesothelin is overexpressed in HSOCs. Here, we discuss the current knowledge of mesothelin and focus on its role in clinical and pathological diagnoses, as well as its impact on the prognosis of HSOC. Moreover, regarding the binding of MSLN to the ovarian cancer antigen CA125, which has been demonstrated in many studies, we also report on signal transduction pathways that may play an important role in the spread and neoplastic progression of this lethal neoplasm. Given that mesothelin is overexpressed in many solid tumours and has antigenic properties, this molecule could be considered an antigenic target for the treatment of many malignancies. Consequently, we also review the literature to report on mesothelin-targeting therapies for HSOC that have been recently investigated in many clinical studies.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the expression of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), cancer antigen 125 (CA125), CA19-9, CA724, and CA242 in serum and ascites of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) patients and evaluate the predictive value of these elevated biomarkers in pathological grade, completeness of cytoreduction (CC), and survival. Methods From May 2009 to October 2019, a total of 512 patients diagnosed with PMP through pathology in Aerospace Center Hospital were enrolled. The serum and ascites tumor biomarkers were obtained. The diagnostic values between serum and ascites biomarkers in pathology and CC were compared by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The correlation between pathology, cytoreduction, and biomarkers was calculated by univariate and multivariate logistic regression. The associations between different numbers of elevated biomarkers and survival status were examined using univariate and multivariate backward Cox proportional hazard regression models. Results The results showed that the areas under the ROC curves (AUROC) in the diagnosis of CC were 0.798 (95% CI: 0.760-0.836) and 0.632 (95% CI: 0.588-0.676) in serum and ascites biomarkers, respectively. The elevated serum and ascites biomarkers were independent risk factors for both pathology and CC. The 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year survival rates were 89.07%, 73.22%, and 66.94%, respectively. Longer survival was observed in patients who had less than two elevated serum biomarkers compared with those with 2-3 and 4-5 elevated serum biomarkers (p < 0.001). Conclusion CEA, CA125, CA19-9, CA724, and CA242 in serum and ascites can be used to judge the severity and predict the resectability. Furthermore, different numbers of elevated biomarkers can help determine the prognosis of PMP.

Abstract
Background The incidence of gastric cancer with liver metastases (GCLM) is 9.9-18.7%, with a median survival time of 11 months and a 5-year survival rate <20%. Multidisciplinary treatment (MDT) is gradually gaining recognition as the most important method. However, specific treatment plans remain unclear. The aim of study was to provide a consensus to improve the diagnosis and treatment of GCLM. Methods We brought together experts from relevant medical fields across China, including the Chinese Research Hospital Association Digestive Tumor Committee, Chinese Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons, Chinese Gastric Cancer Association, and the Gastrointestinal Surgical Group of Chinese Surgical Society Affiliated to Chinese Medical Association, to discuss and formulate this consensus. Results A consensus was reached on the diagnosis and treatment of GCLM. Moreover, we have developed a new clinical classification system, the Chinese Type for Gastric Cancer Liver Metastases, based on the likelihood of a surgical treatment being successful. Conclusions The MDT mode should be implemented throughout all treatment of GCLM.A Chinese version of this expert consensus has been published in the Chinese Journal of Practical Surgery (Volume 39, Issue 10, p. 405-411). Written permission was obtained from the Chinese Journal of Practical Surgery to disseminate the expert consensus in English.

Abstract
Background: Relevant serum tumor markers have been indicated to be associated with peritoneal dissemination (PD) of gastric cancer (GC). Fibrinogen has been shown to play an important role in the systemic inflammatory response (SIR) and in tumor progression. However, the clinical significance of the fibrinogen-to-lymphocyte ratio (FLR) in GC with PD has not been studied. Methods: The clinical data of 391 patients with GC were collected, including 86 cases of PD. Then, 1:3 matching was performed by propensity score matching (PSM), and the clinical data of the matched 344 patients were analyzed by univariate and multivariate conditional logistic regression. Classification tree analysis was used to obtain the decision rules and a random forest algorithm to extract the important risk factors of PD in GC. A nomogram model for risk assessment of PD in GC was established by using the rms package of R software. Results: Univariate analysis showed that the factors related to PD in GC were: carbohydrate antigen (CA) 125 (P < 0.0001), CA19-9 (P < 0.0001), CA72-4 (P < 0.0001), FLR (P < 0.0001), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (P < 0.0001), albumin-to- lymphocyte ratio (ALR) (P < 0.0001), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) (P = 0.013), and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) (P = 0.031). Conditional logistic regression found that CA125 (OR: 1.046; P < 0.0001), CA19-9 (OR: 1.002; P < 0.0001), and FLR (OR: 1.266; P = 0.024) were independent risk factors for GC with PD. The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of the decision rules for detecting PD of GC were 89.5, 77.4, 94.0, 82.8, and 91.8%, respectively. According to the important variables identified by the classification tree and random forest algorithm, the risk assessment model of PD in GC was established. The accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the model were 91, 89.5, and 79.5%, respectively. Conclusion: CA125 > 17.3 U/ml, CA19-9 > 27.315 U/ml, and FLR > 2.555 were the risk factors for GC with PD. The decision rules and nomogram model constructed by CA125, CA19-9, CA72-4, and FLR can correctly predict the risk of PD in GC.

Abstract
Background Young breast cancer patients have poor prognosis compared to older patients in both overall survival (OS) and loco-regional failure-free survival. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and Cancer antigen 125 (CA125) have been widely used, but their prognostic value in young breast cancer patients remains unknown. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the prognostic value of preoperative CEA and CA125 serum levels and to build nomograms for better prognostic prediction of young Chinese breast cancer patients using both tumor markers. Methods We included 576 young breast cancer patients (≤40 years at diagnosis) and collected their preoperative information. The best cut-off values of the CEA and CA125 were identified with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify the relative risks of factors for the overall survival (OS), and disease-free survival (DFS), and nomograms were constructed based on these identified factors. Results The best cut-off values for CEA and CA125 in young breast cancer patients was 3.38 ng/mL and 19.38 U/mL, respectively. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that young patients with low levels of CEA and/or CA125, had longer OS and DFS. Multivariate analysis suggested that both CEA and CA125 levels were independent predictive elements for OS. Nomograms were built and showed a better predictive ability for OS (AUC = 0.856) and DFS (AUC = 0.702) in young breast cancer patients. Conclusion Preoperative serum CEA and CA125 levels could be the independent prognostic factors for OS, and the nomograms including these two variables provide more personal forecasts information to help physicians optimize treatment for young breast cancer patients better.

Abstract
AIMS In this study, we investigated whether free intraperitoneal tumour cells (FITC) were detectable in ascites or peritoneal lavage fluid (PLF) from patients with peritoneal metastasis (PM) before and after treatment with pressurised intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC). METHODS Ascites or PLF retrieved at the first and third PIPAC procedures was analysed by conventional cytology, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and total protein concentration, and quantitative reverse transcriptase PCR (qRT-PCR) for mRNA expression of CEA, epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) and cancer antigen 125 (CA-125). Conventional cytology and qRT-PCR were also performed in a negative control group (benign PLF specimens and inflammatory ascites). The treatment response was compared with the histological response based on repeated peritoneal biopsies evaluated by the Peritoneal Regression Grading Score (PRGS). RESULTS Thirty-five patients with PM of various origins were included from 2015 to 2016. At the first PIPAC procedure, FITC were detected by conventional cytology (sensitivity 0.58, specificity 1.00), CEA protein (cut-off 0.4 µg/L, sensitivity 0.71), CEA mRNA (sensitivity 0.75, specificity 1.00), EpCAM mRNA (sensitivity 0.71, specificity 1.00) and CA-125 mRNA (sensitivity 0.43, specificity 1.00). The combination of CEA/EpCAM mRNA had a sensitivity of 0.88 and a specificity of 1.00. The evaluation of ascites or PLF retrieved at the third PIPAC procedure failed to detect treatment response, when compared with the histological PRGS. CONCLUSIONS The evaluation of CEA and EpCAM mRNA detects FITC with a high sensitivity and an excellent specificity, but is not useful for response evaluation in patients treated with PIPAC. Abstract
Liquid crystals are defined as the fourth state of matter forming between solid and liquid states. Earlier the applications of liquid crystals were confined to electronic instruments, but recent research findings suggest multiple applications of liquid crystals in biology and medicine. Here, the purpose of this review article is to discuss the potential biological impacts of liquid crystals in the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer along with the risk assessment. In this review, we also discussed the recent advances of liquid crystals in cancer biomarker detection and treatment in multiple cell line models. Cases reviewed here will demonstrate that cancer diagnostics based on the multidisciplinary technology and intriguingly utilization of liquid crystals may become an alternative to regular cancer detection methodologies. Additionally, we discussed the formidable challenges and problems in applying liquid crystal technologies. Solving these problems will require great effort and the way forward is through the multidisciplinary collaboration of physicists, biologists, chemists, material-scientists, clinicians, and engineers. The triumphant outcome of these liquid crystals and their applications in cancer research would be convenient testing for the detection of cancer and may result in treating the cancer patients non-invasively.

Abstract
Introduction To evaluate the impact of serum and peritoneal levels of tumour markers on peritoneal carcinomatosis and survival in gastric adenocarcinoma. Materials and methods Patients with gastric adenocarcinoma were evaluated with regard to serum and peritoneal carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and CA19-9. Numeric values and groupings based on serum and peritoneal cutoff values were used. Development of peritoneal carcinomatosis, including positive washing cytology, was regarded as main outcome. Gastric cancer outcomes as disease free and overall survival were analysed. Results There were 67 patients with a mean age of 60 ± 11 years. Positive peritoneal washing cytology was significantly associated with serum CA19-9 and high serum CA 19-9 group (P = 0.033 and P = 0.011, respectively). High peritoneal CEA was shown to be significantly associated with peritoneal carcinomatosis (P = 0.032). After a median follow up of 17 months, 48 patients (71.7%) were alive. Patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis showed significant poorer prognosis as shown by overall survival rate of 28.6%. Only serum CEA was significantly associated with lower disease free and overall survival (P = 0.002 and P = 0.001, respectively). Discussion and conclusion Serum CEA is shown to be significantly associated with poor prognosis for gastric cancer patients. Serum level of CA19-9 and high peritoneal CEA levels are significant predictors for positive peritoneal washing cytology and the development of peritoneal carcinomatosis, respectively. Therefore, the possible impact of serum and peritoneal tumor markers especially on the staging and prognosis of gastric cancer remains to be clarified by future studies.

Abstract
We examined the prognostic value of normal levels of four serum cancer markers, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate associated antigen (CA19-9), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and cancer antigen 125 (CA125), in gastric cancer patients. Among 1927 gastric cancer patients enrolled in this study, 1477 were male (76.6%) and 450 were female (23.4%). The median age was 57 years (range 20-86). Clinicopathological features and survival times were recorded, and the association between CEA, CA19-9, AFP, and CA125 levels and patient prognosis was analyzed. The optimal cut-off values were 0.71 for CEA (P=0.317), 9.22 for CA19-9 (P=0.009), 3.76 for AFP (P=0.008) and 15.65 for CA125 (P=0.006). Serum CA19-9 levels correlated with gender, age, and tumor depth (all P<0.05); AFP levels correlated with pathological type (P=0.005); and CA125 levels correlated with gender, tumor size, pathological type, tumor depth and lymph node metastasis (all P<0.05). Relatively high levels of CA19-9, AFP and CA125, still within the normal range, were all associated with poor prognosis (5-year overall survival: 70.6% vs 64.2%, P<0.001. 69.6% vs 54.5%, P=0.011. 70.2% vs 54.9%, P<0.001). However, only CA19-9 and AFP levels were independent prognostic predictors. We conclude that the combined assessment of CA19-9, AFP and CA125 levels could have prognostic value in gastric cancer (P<0.001).

Abstract
The development of biomarkers of reproductive medicine is still in its infancy because many black boxes are still present in reproductive medicine. Novel approaches to human infertility diagnostics and treatment must be developed because reproductive medicine has lagged behind in the implementation of biomarkers in clinical medicine. Despite the dearth of the available literature, the current rapid pace of publications suggests that this gap will soon be filled therefore; this review is a précis of the research that has been done so far and will provide a basis for the development of biomarkers in reproductive medicine.

Abstract
Background The diagnostic and prognostic significance of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate associated antigen 19–9 (CA19–9), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and cancer antigen 125 (CA125) in early gastric cancer have not been investigated yet. Thus, the present study aimed to explore the diagnostic and prognostic significance of the four tumor markers for early gastric cancer. Methods From September 2008 to March 2015, 587 early gastric cancer patients were given radical gastrectomy in our center. The clinicopathological characteristics were recorded. The association between levels of CEA and CA19–9 and clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of patients were analyzed. Results There were 444 men (75.6%) and 143 women (24.4%). The median age was 57 years (ranged 21–85). The 1-, 3- and 5-year overall survival rate was 99.1%, 96.8% and 93.1%, respectively. The positive rate of CEA, CA19–9, AFP and CA125 was 4.3%, 4.8%, 1.5% and 1.9%, respectively. The positive rate of all markers combined was 10.4%. The associations between the clinicopathological features and levels of CEA and CA19–9 were analyzed. No significant association was found between CEA level and clinicopathological features. However, elevated CA19–9 level was correlated with female gender and presence of lymph node metastasis. Age > 60 years old, presence of lymph node metastasis and elevation of CEA level were independent risk factors for poor prognosis of early gastric cancer. Conclusions The positive rates of CEA, CA19–9, APF and CA125 were relatively low for early gastric cancer. Elevation of CA19–9 level was associated with female gender and presence of lymph node metastasis. Elevation of CEA level was an independent risk factor for the poor prognosis of early gastric cancer.
