Reader Comments:
We read with interest the article by Zheng and coworkers (2023) titled: “Laparoscopic resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection for treating gastric ectopic pancreas”. Indeed, this is a rare developmental variation and there is limited information about its management. The authors report 49 cases of ectopic pancreas tissue in the stomach, its diagnosis and treatment. The manuscript is interesting in many ways as the study provides detailed information about endoscopic and laparoscopic managements of this complex entity. There have been several similar reports, one of which in Japan (57 patients) and another in China (93 patients). EUS is an effective method for diagnosis of ectopic pancreas int he stomach. Both laparoscopic resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection seem to be good choices for treating ectopic pancreatic tissue in the stomach, however surgery is better in case of large tissue with a deep origin. Zheng and coworkers report several limitation: single-center retrospective study with a nonrandomized design, small sample size, few patients underwent laparoscopy. We do believe that multicenter prospective studies will help to overcome these difficulties in future.
