This article summarizes the association between gut microbiota (GM) and the occurrence and development of diabetes mellitus (DM) from various perspectives by using various charts. In addition, new methods of diabetes prevention and treatment are discussed from the perspective of GM, and the recent studies on the “GM-Diabetes” are comprehensively summarized, which improves some interests for targeting GM in the treatment of diabetes. As an “organ”, GM plays an important role in the occurrence and development of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and its metabolites can reach multiple parts of the body through blood circulation to participate in a variety of metabolic pathways. I believe that if some studies on the role of metabolites of GM in the development of diabetes were added to this article, it will provide more beneficial help for researchers to understand the role of GM in diabetes mellitus.
